Tropicana orange juice fans revolt against smaller bottles as shrinkflation spreads
Tropicana orange juice fans arent happy about the brands latest redesign, which replaced the plastic bottles carafe-like look with a smaller, traditional-looking container, shrinking the portion size by 6 ounces. However, customers say that while the size has gone down, the prices havent.Tropicana said on its website that it lowered the manufacturers suggested retail price from $4.69 to $3.99,but, It is possible that for a brief time, retailers have not adjusted their on-shelf pricing while transitioning from our old to new packaging. However, some customers arent buying the excuse, and are accusing Tropicana of charging more for lessaka, shrinkflation. (One unhappy OJ drinker griped on X, Midnight Musings. I am no fan of the redesign of the Tropicana Orange Juice Bottle. Same price but went from 52 ounces to 46 ounces.)The other thing customers arent buying is Tropicana Orange Juice. Bottles have been sitting on supermarket shelves since the rebrand rolled out over the summer, with sales dropping a whopping 10.9% in August, and plummeting 19% by October, according to market research firm Circana as reported by CNN.In addition to adjusting the multi-serving bottles, Tropicana also reduced the size of its single-serving bottles, moving from 12 to 11 ounces. Yet, the price for this bottle remains the same. The consumer is always at the center of our decision-making, Tropicana said in a statement on its website. Because of that, we redesigned our bottles to directly address their concerns around ease of opening, ease of handling, storage and desire for less plastic, as well as offering more affordable juice options. This isnt the first time customers have revolted against a Tropicana rebrand. Fifteen years ago, fans protested when the OJ maker overhauled the brands iconic orange logo (which is seen pierced by a red-and-white-striped straw) and flipped it vertically. Customershated that rebrand so much, Tropicana pulled the cartons from shelves. So, why all the rebrands and attempts to change Tropicanas look and size?It might be the latest battle in the orange juice wars, as PepsiCos Tropicana brand tries to retain its number one position over Coca-Colas Simply brand. The rivalry is not unlike the cola wars that have kept these two companies competing over market share for more than a century. In fact, the reason PepsiCo ditched Tropicanas cardboard cartons for plastic carafes was because they looked more like rival Coca-Colas Simply juice brand orange juice, according to the Wall Street Journal. In 2023, PepsiCos Tropicana brand beat out Coca-Colas Simply brand in refrigerated orange juice dollar sales, per Statista, but not by much ($969.1 million compared to $887.2 million).

Who will Trump choose for Treasury secretary?
While Donald Trump was quick to name several nominees for Cabinet positions last week, one of the most watched posts, Treasury secretary, is still a question mark. And the search for who will lead the countrys fiscal policy seems to be getting a lot more complicated. Some candidates have dropped out. Others are jockeying for position with Trump. New names are being floated. And Elon Musk has inserted himself into the process as well, though not everyone on Team Trump is reportedly happy about that. This added turbulence comes as Trump is already facing potential resistance even among his own party for at least two of his choices: former Congressman Matt Gaetz for Attorney General and Fox News host Pete Hegseth for Defense secretary. Heres where things stand.Who are considered the leading candidates for Treasury Secretary? At the end of last week, it seemed almost certain that the job would go to either Howard Lutnick, CEO of financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald, and currently a co-leader of the Trump transition team; or Scott Bessent, a former Soros Fund Management executive and founder and CEO of Key Square Group. Both are still serious contenders, but according to multiple reports, in-fighting for the position has reportedly annoyed Trump to the point where he is now considering other candidates as well.Who else is Trump considering for Treasury Secretary?A few new names have entered the conversation. The Wall Street Journal reports that Trump is now also looking at Kevin Warsh, former economic-policy adviser to President George W. Bush and a one-time member of the Federal Reserves board of governors; and Apollo Global Management CEO Marc Rowan.Warsh had been previously floated as a candidate to become chairman of the Fed after Jerome Powell departs the role, whether thats when his term ends in May 2026 or if Trump will attempt to fire him. Warsh was on the short list for Fed chair in 2019, when Trump ended up picking Powell.Rowan, meanwhile, has been critical of the Fed, questioning why it was cutting rates, given the health of the economy. He has an estimated net worth of more than $8 billion and has been a supporter of Musks future role at the Department of Government Efficiency.Additionally, Bill Hagerty reportedly met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago several days ago and now could be under consideration for Treasury secretary. Hagerty is a former ambassador to Japan under the first Trump administration, and has been a senator from Tennessee since 2021. He has firmly opposed financial support for Ukraine. Hes also well-liked in the party, which could make his confirmation a very quick process. He sits on several influential Senate subcommittees, including banking and foreign relations. And Politico said Trumps longtime trade policy adviser Robert Lighthizer could be considered for the job as well. Why is this pick taking so long? There has been a lot of behind-the-scenes jockeying for this post, which has become annoying to Trump, according to reports. Trump has privately expressed frustration that Lutnick has been hanging around him too much and that he has been manipulating the transition process for his own ends, according to the New York Times.Who has backed out of consideration for Treasury Secretary? Before the current drama, several candidates for the position took their names out of consideration. John Paulson of the investment firm Paulson & Co. backed out six days ago, saying, My complex financial obligations would prevent me from holding an official position in President Trumps administration at this time. Larry Kudlow of Fox Business was considered an outside shot, but told the Trump team last Friday that he would not be returning to government work. And while he was never an official candidate, JPMorgans Jamie Dimon made it clear he had little interest in a role. Trump, last week, said Dimon would not be a part of his Cabinet. How has Elon Musk become involved in the search for a Treasury Secretary? And then theres Musk, who on Saturday, issued an endorsement on X for Lutnick to get the job, saying, Bessent is a business-as-usual choice, whereas @howardlutnick will actually enact change. Business-as-usual is driving America bankrupt, so we need change one way or another. He also encouraged his 205 million followers to weigh in on the matter, tagging Trump in the post. That post reportedly annoyed some on Trumps team, with one advisor telling the Washington Post that Musk was acting as a co-president and could be overstepping his role of advisor. But so far, there has been no evidence that Trump and Musks relationship has been strained. The two attended a UFC fight Saturday, then posed on Trumps plane (along with Don Jr. and Robert Kennedy Jr.) over a meal of McDonalds burgers and fries. What happens now?Trump will reportedly continue to meet with potential Treasury secretaries this week. Some possible candidates had already met with Trump, including Hagerty, Lutnick, and Bessent have already met with Trump. The transition team has not given any timeline for the Treasury secretary announcement. Originally, watchers had expected Trump to name someone at the end of last week.

Louis Vuitton flagship construction disguised as stack of luggage trunks
Part of a multi-year renovation of its New York flagship store, fashion brand Louis Vuitton has concealed its construction with a "luggage" facade and relocated to a temporary store that features OMA-designed sculptures.Louis Vuitton covered its flagship at East 57th Street and 5th Avenue in a facade modelled after the brand's distinctive trunks, while simultaneously opening a temporary location around the corner, with sculptures developed with OMA partner Shohei Shigematsu that rise through an atrium. As part of a multi-year renovation, Louis Vuitton has covered its NYC flagship in a facade that resembles luggage. The top photo is by Brad Dickson. This photo is by Ricky ZehaviDesigned by Louis Vuitton's in-house team, the luggage facade wraps completely around the construction underway at the New York City flagship. It resembles six, grey trunks of various sizes stacked in descending size.According to the team, the design pays homage to the brand's Trianon Grey canvas, a light grey textile which dates back to the 19th century.Real metal details were used to cover the facade. The photo is by Brad DicksonDetails such as handles, locks, rivets and silver hardware are also represented on the facade, with the team noting the largest of the handles "weighs 5,000 pounds"."It is finished with the classic detailing synonymous with Louis Vuitton's savoir-faire including handles, signature locks, and silver hardware rendered in chrome-plated, laser-cut steel," said Louis Vuitton. The facade is informed by a heritage grey canvas used by the brand. The photo is by Brad Dickson"3D scans of real Louis Vuitton hard-sided trunks were used to create the locks and latches, and the steel corners have been hand-welded. The stack features 840 rivets, each etched with the moniker 'Louis Vuitton'."Strips of lighting run along each of the trunk's perimeters, while bands of black and brown represent leather lining. As part of the renovation, the brand relocated its flagship to a temporary location around the cornerWhile construction takes place at the flagship, the brand has relocated its retail operations to a five-storey building around the corner at 6 East 57th Street, which contains four floors inhabited by a chocolate shop, men's and women's wear, and the debut of the brand's first cafe in the US.The building's exterior architecture and interior floorplan remain unchanged according to the team, although it is now outfitted in a material palette of light woods, creams and shades of brown amongst an exposed concrete structure.Read: "Average customer doesn't care terribly much about sustainability" says LVMH US headFour, towering 16-meter-tall sculptures developed by Shigematsu sit in the lobby atrium, similarly modelled after "iconic" trunks."The trunks are built at the ateliers to actual product specifications and stacked to erect shifting, counterbalancing, twisting and zigzagging forms showcasing strength and lightness," said the team. The store contains towering sculptures developed with OMA partner Shohei Shigematsu"Each is further distinguished by using different Louis Vuitton materials historic stripes, classic Monogram canvas, white Damier, and a metallic Monogram which have redefined the timeless piece from the past to today."Elsewhere in the store, furniture pieces from the nearby flagship "reappear" in keeping with the brand's "commitment to circular creativity" and were mixed with new pieces by designers such as Carlo Mollino, Charlotte Perriand, Christophe Delcourt and Pierre Augustin Rose.It contains the brand's first Louis Vuitton cafe in the USOversized, sculptures of a giraffe and ostrich and a screen with Louis Vuitton motifs cover the building's facade, which was also lined with bright exterior pendants. The flagship construction could "potentially" double the size of the store, according to New York Yimby, while the temporary location will shut down after the renovation is complete.A chocolate shop and women's and men's wear are also located throughout the temporary location"Between the store's engaging spaces and the whimsical world within the cafe, Louis Vuitton 57th Street NYC is a temporary store that aspires to leave a lasting impression for New Yorkers and travellers alike," said the team.Louis Vuitton often taps luminaries from the design and architecture industries for its projects.Frank Gehrey recently designed a watch and handbag for the brand, while the North American head of its parent company LVMH recently spoke about an overarching commitment to sustainability. The photography is courtesy of Louis Vuitton unless otherwise noted. The post Louis Vuitton flagship construction disguised as stack of luggage trunks appeared first on Dezeen.

Kith and Mark Jupiter update Bose 901 speaker that "reinvented sound"
American apparel brand Kith and Brooklyn furniture designer Mark Jupiter have housed Bose's reissued 1960 speakers in sleek wood casings and metal bases.Kith was tasked with reimaging the casing for the Bose speakers to mark its 60th anniversary. The company worked with the Massachusetts-based audio engineering company to present a contemporary take on what has become a well-known design since it first hit the market in 1968.The result was a limited collection only twelve pairs were made with an updated version of the original hardware. This is significant in its inclusion of backwards-facing speakers that reflect sound off of walls, creating an enveloping sound effect.Kith and Mark Jupiter reinterpreted Bose's 901 speakersThis hardware was placed in wooden cases to highlight the speakers' potential as decor."The way people used to house these speakers in their home, I felt like they were more furniture pieces than anything else even though [Bose] reinvented sound with these speakers," Kith founder Ronnie Fieg told Dezeen."It's that time to respect the design and understand how timeless it was, and all I'm trying to do is build around it because the 901 is iconic beyond words."The speakers were first launched in the 1960s and also functioned as decorFieg noted that his admiration for the speakers and consistent dedication to music and music culture made the collaboration make sense. To arrive at a conjunction between "timeless" furniture and sound, Fieg tapped Jupiter to frame the speakers. The two have worked together in the past, with Jupiter designing wooden furniture and interior architecture pieces for Kith's retail and Fieg's personal homes."Seeing [Jupiter's] work combined with the way I listen to music, it's a natural progression of how we work together," said Fieg. "It's furniture that serves a function."Mark Jupiter crafted wooden casings and metal basesThe speakers themselves were rendered with two different wood casings white-washed ash wood and a natural air-dried walnut. They rest on pronged pedestals made from hand-rubbed brass that give the product a contemporary aspect as they sprout up from the wooden bases.Overall, the form of the speaker system stays close to the original, and Kith even sourced the same grey-tone fabric used for the 1968 release for the fronts.Only 12 pairs of the speakers were madeThe collaboration between Kith and Bose marks a rare foray into decor design for Kith, but Fieg insisted that he was not capitalising on any trend."There is no formula to this project. It's not like I have an agenda of trying to bring furniture into what we do," he said, adding that his own interests often guide his collaborations. However, he did say that he was "excited" that his audience would be introduced to furniture design via exposure to Jupiter's work. It is Jupiter's first design for a sound system.Read: Selene Sar designs air-purifying speaker that "cleanses the air through sound and music"Fieg said that he has noticed too much focus on convenience around design for music listening."These are, you know, items you have in your room that should be pleasant to look at," he said."I think what has happened over the years is convenience has taken over the music industry, in the way that people view what music should look like and what the speakers should look like, but I feel like that's gotten boring, for me."The collaboration was a homage to Kith founder Ronnie Fieg's appreciation of the iconic design"I'm very passionate about music. It's been the soundtrack to my life. So I want to beautify that," Fieg concluded.Kith is well-known for its collaboration with other brands. Last year, it released a collaboration with New Balance and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation a sneaker featuring colours from the late American architect's personal palette.Other designers reviving speakers-as-decor include Australian designer Tom Fereday, who recently collaborated with Tasmanian audio brand Pitt & Giblin to create large speakers clad in aluminium to be "celebrated not hidden".The photography is courtesy of Kith. The post Kith and Mark Jupiter update Bose 901 speaker that "reinvented sound" appeared first on Dezeen.

Industrial Design Student Work: Therapeutic Eyewear
This Sooze project is by Maoxin Yuan, done while studying Industrial Design at Australia's UNSW Sydney. Yuan tackled a degenerative eye disease:"Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease that leads to thinning and protrusion of the cornea. It further results in irregular astigmatism and serious eye discomfort."Sooze provides comfort and vision support for keratoconus patients through a modular system of a neural stimulating headband and detachable visor module." "The visor module and the light engine in the headband work together to capture and deliver clear images directly to patients' retinas, regardless of their cornea shape. The electrode on the headband sends low-intensity electricity to the patient's upper eye and forehead area through a conductive textile strap, increasing patients' tear production and easing their eye pain when they are awake and asleep. The light engine emits red light at night when the visor is off, further improving keratoconus patients' sleep quality." Yuan's project won him an Australian Graduate of the Year Award.

    Nike's 3D-Printed Air Max 1000s
This past weekend at ComplexCon in Las Vegas, Nike unveiled their 3D-printed Air Max 1000. The kicks were created in collaboration with Zellerfeld, a German manufacturer of 3D-printed footwear. Zellerfeld's process means you can create different densities of cushioning in different parts of the shoe as shown below, with a non-Nike example: Nike Chief Innovation Officer John Hoke calls the production method of the Air Max 1000s as "control, times precision, times expression all of which are vital to sport and to design." That said, as with a concept car, no production plans have been announced.
