Industrial Design Student Work: Community Gravestones for Potter's Fields
This Community Gravestones project is by Cameron Brentlinger, an Industrial Design student at Pratt Institute. Brentlinger put an incredible amount of thought and research into the work, which seeks to destigmatize a taboo subject: NYC's anonymous mass graves. The goal was to create "dignified memorials and ceremonies for unidentified or unclaimed people at the end of life."COMMUNITY GRAVESTONE is an equitable gravestone design for Potter's Fields. It is an impermanent memorial made from local adobe for individuals who are interred in mass graves. The ritual seeks to provide dignity, remove the stigma of these cemeteries, and create a space for collective grief by creating gravestones and arrangements for a communal burial space. Nature is used as a tool to acknowledge the cyclical quality of life and the interconnectedness of all beings to create a welcoming space for the living and the dead. ResearchHart Island is New York City's Potter's Field for the unclaimed and unidentified located off the Bronx. There are over a million unidentified New Yorkers buried on the island. Design Values How It WorksAfter identifying the core values for the design, I started storyboarding a concept for an interactive making ceremony and memorial that allows the public to acknowledge and pay respects to those who are buried. MaterialsHart Island is a burial site that goes through immense change. It felt necessary to find a material that also goes through change to symbolize the impermanence of these memorial spaces, our memories, our lives, and the change of our grief cycles. For this reason I decided to use local adobe (clay, sand, silt, and hay) which with break down into the soil overtime. Mold PrototypeThe mold was designed as simple and intuitive as possible to allow the grave making process to be easy for the cemeteries to output. Gravestone Prototypes and ArrangementsThe gravestones are laid out in the field with suggested pattern arrangements. People as well as plants and insects are invited to come and appreciate the forms and pay tribute to the members of the community who are buried there. ConclusionAnd so, For a moment's time these physical bricks will exist above the mass graves, slowly evolving as hints of lichen and bugs inhabit its crevices. Eventually, the brick will combine with the soil that is made up of those who were buried before. New life grows from the soil and the pattern continues. Interestingly enough, Brentlinger started out studying Photography at Pratt, but was drawn to Industrial Design after creating her own photography sets. "I realized Industrial Design was much more than just making things," she told Pratt News, citing the extensive research, problem-solving, and collaboration required in ID. "I fell in love with the design process. I feel like I can design or make anything as long as I go through these steps that I was taught."Community Gravestones won both a 2024 Change Agent and Activism in Sustainability Award and a Material Lab Prize.

Pizza Huts 3D printed pizza warmer uses PS5 to keep slices warm while you play
Pizza and gaming go together very well. But many of us often get lost in the game only to find the pizza slices hard and cold. The walk to the microwave in the kitchen can be a long one when youre locked in the virtual tussle. This is when we want someone to go heat and give us a nice steaming pizza slice! If youre someone who owns a Play Station 5, your wish may just have been granted. Pizza Hut Canada has designed at least given us the design a PIZZAWRMR, that rests under a horizontally placed console and keeps the pizza inside of it warm by using the heat dissipated from the PS5. A nice warm pizza between games is not a dream anymore!Designer: Pizza HutGadgets especially game consoles can get really warm during long uninterrupted sessions. Loosely saying then, the PS5 could have enough heat emitted through its vents to keep a pizza hot. How hygienic is this option of heating the pizza, with the hot air released out of a device whose innards have not been cleaned for months, may be questionable; but between intense gaming sessions, who cares?Pizza Hut Canada revealed the idea of the PIZZAWRMR on YouTube last month. At first sight of the promotional video, you can be led into believing that the pizza warmer can be brought off the shelf. However, thats not how it is. The laptop-style warmer, with a flipping lid that reveals the pizza inside, has to be 3D printed. Its not for sale, you get 3D printing files on the Hut website to download and then print the warmer yourself. If you intend to give your 3D pizza warmer a try, Pizza Hut suggests you use food-safe PLA to print the parts. Since the pizza is going to rest inside this contraption you must avoid any plastic-related health concerns by not printing it from unsafe material. Be reminded that the PIZZAWRMR is only a promotional idea and not an officially licensed Sony product; printing it or using it close to the PS5s exhaust should all be done with caution. The post Pizza Huts 3D printed pizza warmer uses PS5 to keep slices warm while you play first appeared on Yanko Design.

3D-printed chairs are made from 100% recycled plastic from donation program
3D-printed furniture is still not as common as regular furniture but were seeing a lot of movement when it comes to designs and concepts. Aside from the fact that its easy to adapt this in actual production, it can also be sustainable and eventually impactful. Most of these 3D-printing concepts try to create something thats recyclable or made from recycled materials therefore making it more sustainable than regular furniture.Designer: Ethan SolodukhinThe Revo Chair Concept, with Revo meaning revolutionary, is a collection of 3D-printed furniture and is powered by the PlastiVista Atelier program. The program actually encourages homes, schools, and communities to donate their plastic waste and those that can be used for 3D printing converted into filament. The collection includes the Revo Chair and the Stoool (yes thats not a typo). They are made from 100% recycled plastic. The Revo Chair uses a single-piece design and it can serve as both an actual chair but when used with a different orientation, it can also serve as storage. The photos show its a box-like storage although its not really shown how it can be turned into that although the surfaces can be something you can place objects on. The Stoool meanwhile just serves as a seat with its compact surface, although you can probably also use it as a side table if you want to.The renders of these chairs reminds me of those small, plastic phone holders that you can get for cheap. The question of course for these 3D-printed chairs would be if they are durable enough and comfortable enough for people to sit in for a long period of time. The post 3D-printed chairs are made from 100% recycled plastic from donation program first appeared on Yanko Design.

When Blush Meets Sage: Inside a Color-Conscious 70 sq m Home
As you walk into Ataraxiadesigned by Nazarius Shoreevery element will invite you to breathe just a little deeper. The designer brings their vision of modern tranquility to life in just 70 square meters, showing us that space is really no constraint. Its the design eye that matters!Lets step inside and see how thoughtful design can turn minimalism into an art form The living room is muted with just the right balance of color. A curved boucle sofa makes the space cozy as a sculptural coffee table makes a bold statement. The vibrant artwork adds this bold punch. We love the addition of greenthrough the textured rug and indoor plant. In the open-plan kitchen and dining, the cabinetry seamlessly blends with the walls. The large, round pendant light over the dining creates a statement. Simultaneously, the dark dining table adds contrast. A smart addition is the curved wooden column you see segregating and hallway; this acts as a divider, but it also provides storage space!Ah, the bedroom. Its a modern minimalist haven with soft colorsand lots of natural light. The bed features soft pink upholstery, while the sea green nightstands add a beautiful contrast. Theres also plenty of wooden storage. And the floor-to-ceiling windows, of course, giving beautiful outdoor views. Were huge fans of this home office. A glass separation makes sure you can see whats going on in the home as you workwhile blocking out the noise. The sleek bucket chair pairs well with the mid-century modern style desk. And both of them wonderfully complement the herringbone flooring! In this bathroom, the arched mirror with a colored frame adds a sense of height. The wall-mounted sink and toilet are space-savvy (and stylish). A special mention for the grid pattern on the tiles and matte black fixtures factoring in luxury. This bathroom interior continues the style youd find in the rest of the home (were eyeing those soft hues of green and mustard)just with some addition of terracotta. The floating wooden vanity has soft edges while the open shower design defines the shower areaall without breaking up the space.
