  • What to know about the Supreme Courts latest culture war fight: Transgender care
    www.fastcompany.com
Dr. Susan Lacy had been caring for transgender patients for several years in Tennessee when, in 2023, everything changed. In the span of a few months, the Republican-governed state banned healthcare providers from treating minors for gender dysphoria. The Memphis gynecologist, one of the plaintiffs who challenged the law in a case going before the U.S. Supreme Court on Dec. 4, recalled the hype and hysteria as public debate coarsened over the issue. Why all of a sudden its a problem is a little bit hard to understand, said Lacy, 57, who has her own medical practice and has an adult child who is transgender. I think that really comes from sort of a political motivation to create an issue that people can rally around.Gender dysphoria is the clinical diagnosis for significant distress that can result from an incongruence between a persons gender identity and the sex they were assigned at birth.Tennessees law aims to encourage minors to appreciate their sex by prohibiting puberty blockers or hormones used to help them live as a purported identity inconsistent with the minors sex. Tennessee House of Representatives Majority Leader William Lamberth, a Republican who co-sponsored the measure, said in a statement to Reuters that he is optimistic about the states case. This case is about protecting vulnerable young people who are experiencing gender dysphoria or other mental health crises from making the biggest mistake of their lives, Lamberth said. These procedures are harmful, unproven and come with permanent, irreversible and life-changing consequences. States have a compelling interest in protecting minors from adult decisions they arent ready for, Lamberth said.To Lacy, an expert in hormone management, the swirling claims in the media and by some legislators that activists are carelessly pushing dangerous medications on vulnerable adolescents are not true, and are meant to stoke outrage.Actually listen to the patients. Actually listen to the physicians who are providing the care, Lacy said. Youre really seeing people that have a significant improvement in their lives. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments in an appeal by President Joe Bidens administration of a lower courts decision allowing enforcement of the ban, one of 24 such policies enacted by conservative lawmakers around the United States. The plaintiffs challenged the law as a violation of the U.S. Constitutions 14th Amendment promise of equal protection. Bidens administration and other challengers including Lacy contend that banning care for youth with gender dysphoria discriminates against these adolescents based on sex and transgender status.Culture warsThe case brings transgender rights, a major flashpoint in the U.S. culture wars, to the nations highest judicial body just as Republican U.S. President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office on Jan. 20. Trump pledged during his election campaign to restrict gender-affirming care and transgender sports participation.Tennessee passed its law in March 2023 after a conservative political commentators criticism of Vanderbilt University Medical Centers transgender health clinic in Nashville went viral on social media, prompting Republican lawmakers to take action.A filing to the Supreme Court by the office of Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti, a Republican, justified the states regulation by pointing to scientific uncertainty about the treatments, tightened restrictions on their use in some European countries, and firsthand accounts of regret and harm from people who discontinue or reverse gender-affirming medical intervention.Tennessee has warned of long-term side effects such as diminished bone density or infertility although the law allows these medications to be used to treat minors for any other reason, including congenital defects, precocious puberty or other conditions.A conservative court The Supreme Courts 6-3 conservative majority has steadily moved American law rightward on other contentious issues including abortion, guns and race policies. But in a landmark 2020 ruling authored by conservative Justice Neal Gorsuch, the court declared that a federal law called Title VII that bars discrimination in the workplace also protects gay and transgender employees. If the Supreme Court sides with the challengers, it could rule that Tennessees ban is unconstitutional, or that the lower court must reconsider the state law under a more skeptical standard an outcome that would make it harder for states to pass laws restricting transgender rights. The court could rule that discrimination against people because of their gender identity is sex discrimination subject to heightened scrutiny under the courts precedents, Yale Law School Professor William Eskridge said.Another issue with the law, Eskridge said, is that it denies a small group of Tennesseans access to a fundamental interest the rights of parents to make health decisions for their children.Bidens administration contends that the law singles out transgender people to enforce gender conformity and discourage adolescents from identifying as transgender.Under the law, an adolescent assigned male at birth cannot receive puberty blockers or estrogen to live and present as a female, but an adolescent assigned female at birth can, the Justice Department said in a filing to the Supreme Court, adding: That is sex discrimination. The state has exaggerated the risks of gender-affirming care while ignoring its benefits, the administration said, noting that major U.S. medical organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association support the therapies for adolescents when deemed clinically necessary.Meanwhile, denying treatment for gender dysphoria can cause psychological harm, with studies showing that up to a third of transgender high school students attempt suicide in a given year, the administration said.Represented by the American Civil Liberties Union, several plaintiffs including two transgender boys, a transgender girl and their parents as well as Lacy sued Skrmetti and other officials to defend the treatments they have said improved their happiness and wellbeing. The Justice Department intervened in the lawsuit.A federal judge blocked the ban in 2023 as likely violating the 14th Amendment. In a 2-1 decision in 2023, the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the judges preliminary injunction.Feeling at peaceLacy began treating transgender patients in 2016. They now make up about a quarter of her practice. The most prevalent thing that (patients) would say is, I finally feel like I can think correctly. I finally feel sort of at peace, Lacy said. I realized, there are many, many, people who need this care. And there are very few physicians that are providing this care.About a year after Lacy began treating these patients, one of her four children now 23 came out as transgender.Deciding to join the legal fight against Tennessees law was easy, Lacy said, not only to share her experience caring for hundreds of transgender patients. But as a parent of a child who went through this, Lacy said, I was compelled from that standpoint.Andrew Chung, Reuters

  • Matt Gaetz is dishing out career advice on Cameo
    www.fastcompany.com
After announcing he would not return to Congress, Matt Gaetz is trying out a new career path: making personalized videos on Cameo.Gaetz, a former Florida representative, joined the celebrity video message app last week, a day after withdrawing his name from consideration to serve as President-elect Donald Trumps attorney general amid sexual misconduct allegations. Gaetz has denied the allegations but cited the distraction as part of his reason for stepping down. Now, hes putting his spare time to good use with paid holiday wishes, marriage congratulations, and career pep talks priced at $550 minimum per video, which so far have averaged about a minute and a half in length. I served in Congress, his Cameo page reads, Trump nominated me to be U.S. Attorney General (that didnt work out). Once I fired the House Speaker. (Gaetz did indeed help engineer the 2023 ouster of former GOP House Speaker House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.)In one video, Gaetz filmed himself congratulating a recipient for making partner at their law firm. Look, I know your politics and mine may not align specifically, but you know, our career trajectories might not be either. I mean, here you are making partner, and my legal career took a little bit of a different turn this last week, Gaetz said. But you know what? Work hard, get paid a lot of money, do a lot of great things as a practitioner and counselor at law, and you know, you never know. You could be an attorney general nominee, too.MATT GAETZ ON CAMEO: "My legal career took a bit of a different turn this last week but you know what? • A Washing Machine for Human Beings, from 1970
    www.core77.com
The 1970 World Expo in Osaka, Japan had the theme of "Progress and Harmony for Mankind," and drew record numbers. Some 64 million people from 77 countries attended. One of the more unusual objects on display was this Sanyo Ultrasonic Bath. The demonstration model would climb into the six-foot-tall machine via ladder, then enter the chamber, with their head sticking out of the top. They'd set the water temperature, then the machine would start spraying them with jets of warm water, like the pre-wash cycle at a car wash. After five minutes of that, the machine would then fill the chamber with hot water for a three-minute ultrasonic bath. This was followed by a two-minute hot rinse cycle. Next, the chamber would drain and the user was blasted with warm air to dry off. They were additionally exposed to both infrared and ultraviolet light to kill germs. All in all, it was a 15-minute cycle. Today the prototype is stored in the Panasonic Museum. (The company acquired Sanyo in 2009.) Unsurprisingly this never made production. However, it has inspired Japan's Science Group, who we wrote about here, to bring back the concept for 2025, when Osaka will again host a World Expo. Science Group's prototype, shown below, is intended to have applications in the healthcare sector.

  • Japanese Faucet Can Clean Dirty Dishes Without Soap, Using Micro-Bubbles
    www.core77.com
The conventional way to clean greasy dishes is by applying a surfactant, like dishwashing soap. The surfactant's paradoxical combination of hydrophilic and hydrophobic moleculesthe former is attracted to water, the latter repelled by itessentially separate the grease from the surface of the dish, allowing us to rinse or scrub it off. This invention here, however, can clean grease from dishes without soap or surfactants. Japanese manufacturer Science Group specializes in "fine bubble technology." They've harnessed their technology into a sink faucet, the Mirable Kitchen, that produces a stream of water loaded with tiny bubbles that can do the job of a surfactant. "More than 16 million ultra-fine bubbles absorb grease and grime and wash it away," the company writes. "They also have a high penetration power into the skin, keeping your hands moisturized."Here's a demo where they rinse a glass that looks to have held a Bloody Mary:I believe they've chosen the vessel purposefully; the shape of the base, with its undercut, would be inconvenient to scrub out mechanically. The bubble method does indeed look more convenient, not to mention the soap savings. You can see how their technology could generate significant cost savings in, say, a commercial kitchen. Fascinatingly, the technology has its roots in an ugly aspect of schoolyard society: Bullying. Twenty years ago, engineer Yasuaki Aoyama's elementary-school-aged daughter had a problem. Taking baths and showers caused rashes across her skin, which led to her being bullied at school. Doctors and hospitals could not find the problem; it was as if water itself caused his daughter's skin to become inflamed.Aoyama researched scientific literature and learned that a portion of the population has a skin reaction to chlorine in tap water. He subsequently invented a showerhead that could be loaded with chlorine-dissolving chemicals. This improved his daughter's condition. However, it still required using chemicals. Pushing further, Aoyama learned that industrial facilities used ultrasonic waves in water to produce small bubbles, and that this was used to clean microchips and electronic components.Aoyama spent several years wrangling the technology into a showerhead which could produce bubbles just 3 micrometers in diameter. This produced a stream of water that could wash both dirt and chlorine out of human pores. Today these showerheads, produced by Aoyama's Science Group company, are used by Japanese hospitals and prized for their ability to thoroughly clean. As for the kitchen faucet applications: The company claims that the bubble-infused water, when used for cooking, actually improves flavor."It has the potential to make not only dishwashing but also cooking itself more delicious and enjoyable. In rice cooking experiments, it was found that ultra-fine bubble water cooked rice with a glossy white color and plumpness that was more delicious than rice cooked with regular tap water. Ultra-fine bubble water is thought to have high penetration power, and we are currently conducting experiments to see if there is a difference in the speed of extraction and penetration, especially in the initial stages. Our research team will continue to focus on various possibilities together with science and conduct research."

This creates a more organic reclining experience that feels less restrictive and more supportive.Combining these features creates a responsive reclining experience that adapts to the users body, providing comfort and support across different sitting positions.Sihoo Doro C300 ProUltimately, the true value of the Sihoo Doro C300 Pros ergonomic features comes out during those extended work sessionsthe times when a lesser chair would leave you feeling fatigued and sore. The adaptive lumbar support, customizable armrests, headrests, and recline all worked together to create a seating experience that didnt require constant manual adjustments to stay comfortable. Instead, the chair supported me intuitively, allowing me to focus on my work rather than my discomfort. This type of ergonomic intelligence sets the Doro C300 Pro apart in a crowded market of office chairs.Dynamic Lumbar SupportThe self-adaptive lumbar support system is a low-maintenance feature that directly contributes to the chairs ergonomic strength. Unlike chairs that rely on static or manual lumbar adjustments, the Doro C300 Pro provides dynamic support that adapts as you move.Sihoo Doro C300 ProThis means that the lumbar area always felt supported no matter how I adjusted my positionleaning forward to focus or reclining to relax. This type of real-time adjustment helps reduce strain and encourages better posture without the user needing to constantly fiddle with settings.Ergonomic Mesh IntegrationThe mesh contributes to the overall ergonomic design of the Doro C300 Pro. It works harmoniously with the lumbar support, which moves with me as I recline, encouraging good posture and reducing strain. These features combine to deliver a seating experience that remains supportive and comfortable, even after hours of use. This premium mesh material creates a microclimate that effectively addresses one of the most common comfort issues in office seatingheat buildup. However, more granular adjustability for lumbar depth would provide an even more personalized ergonomic experience, addressing a common need for those who prefer more direct control over lower back support.Headrest Design and AdjustabilityThe Sihoo Doro C300 Pro features a sophisticated 3D mechanical headrest that brings substantial value to my daily comfort. Its comprehensive customization options allow for precise adjustments, making it adaptable to my specific needs.Adjustment CapabilitiesThe headrest provides:Height adjustment to align perfectly with my neck and head.Forward and backward movement to achieve just the right level of support.Rotational positioning for an ergonomic fit.A wider surface area that enhances overall comfort, especially during extended use.Unique FeaturesOne unique aspect of the headrest is its cradle-like design that follows the natural contours of my neck. It moves independently from the backrest, allowing me to adjust it precisely without affecting my sitting position. The headrests ability to rotate and accommodate different sitting positions proved highly valuable whether I was working, gaming, or simply relaxing.Ergonomic BenefitsThe headrest significantly reduces neck strain during extended work sessions, allowing me to lean back comfortably without feeling unsupported. Its design also allows for comfortable side-leaning, which is a relief during those long periods of sitting. It provides reliable support across multiple postures and activities, which is a testament to its thoughtful design.Material and ConstructionMade with premium mesh material, the headrest balances elasticity and structural support. The mesh feels soft against the skin while maintaining enough tension to keep my head and neck in an ideal position. It integrates well with the chairs overall ergonomic philosophy, creating a cohesive and comfortable sitting experience.Overall, the headrest exemplifies the Doro C300 Pros commitment to personalized comfort, allowing me to fine-tune support for my specific neck and head positioning needs.6D Coordinated ArmrestsThe armrests on the Doro C300 Pro are another big plus. The 6D refers to their six degrees of adjustability, which include height, depth, width, forward and backward movement, and rotation. This level of flexibility makes these armrests superior to the competition, providing support that adjusts to the most intricate preferences and postures. Compared to traditional height-adjustable armrests, which only move up and down, or even 3D and 4D versions, the 6D armrests go further by adding more directional control, making it suitable for different work stylesfrom typing and writing notes to switching between devices like tablets, keyboards, and mice.Sihoo Doro C300 ProFor those unfamiliar with the different types of armrests, height-adjustable armrests are ideal for basic tasks such as typing or general office work, helping maintain a neutral wrist position and reduce shoulder strain. Moving up a level, 3D armrests include height, depth, and rotational adjustments, which are suitable for multitasking or working with different devices. Meanwhile, 4D armrests add width adjustment into the mix, making them excellent for long work sessions or shared workspaces. The Doro C300 Pros 6D coordinated armrests build on all these features, offering an even greater range of customization. This allows users to set the armrests precisely to their individual needs, making them versatile enough for anything from precision work to casual activities. Having armrests that easily adapt to each activity kept me comfortable without unnecessary strain. While the armrests could be more stable to prevent slight shifts, their wide range of adjustability offered the flexibility needed for a comfortable workday. This is a minor issue, but I hope Sihoo will improve the stability of the armrests in the next iteration. Enhancing their stability would significantly improve the overall experience, ensuring they stay securely in place without unintended movement. These improvements would make the Doro C300 Pro even more adaptable and comfortable for extended use.ValueThe Sihoo Doro C300 Pro is a strong contender if youre looking for the best value for your money in office and gaming chairs. They recently announced another project a massive and impressive stadium that is supposed to be the worlds largest once constructed. It is designed to mimic a seed germinating in the desert. Populous unveiled the plans for the stadium called the King Salman Stadium and Masterplan. It will be located in Riyadh, near a big park area that is under construction at the moment.Designer: PopulousThe stadium will include a circular building consisting of segmented sections with green walls and green roof spaces. The roof will also include walking paths. It will be able to seat over 92,00o, making it the largest stadium in Saudi Arabia and one of the largest in the world. It will contain the main seating, a royal box, hospitality skyboxes, and lounges. It will also hold 2,200 VIP seats and 300 VVIP seats. It will be integrated with internal screens, climbing walls, gardens, and an aquatics center with an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and a small athletic stadium. The stadium will also include a running track. The structure is heavily inspired by Saudi Arabias natural landscapes, and it will resemble seeds emerging from the Earth, thereby showcasing the countrys initiative to encourage sports participation.Inspiration for the design is drawn from Saudi Arabias mesmerizing natural landscape, with the symbolic concept of each venue within the masterplan representing a seed that germinates, cracks the earth, and emerges as a dynamic yet seemingly natural intervention, said Populous. The planting of these seeds symbolizes Saudi Arabias commitment to nurturing and growing sports participation across the country, from the grassroots to the elite level. The stadium is expected to be completed in late 2029, and it will function as the primary headquarters for the national soccer team. The King Salman Stadium and Masterplan is a part of a whole bunch of stadiums that are currently being constructed in Saudi Arabia theyre being designed by Populous as well. The post Saudi Arabia Is All Set To Construct The Worlds Largest Sports Stadium first appeared on Yanko Design.
