    www.forbes.com
FortniteCredit: Epic Games Post updated 11/30/24. See updates below.Fortnites current Remix Season has been incredibly popular, but its about to end. Not only is the season drawing to a close Saturday, the new Season will be the first of Chapter 6. Fortnite players will get an entirely new map, new movement mechanics, a brand new Battle Pass and much more this weekend.Chapter 6, Season 1 is called Hunters (Demon Hunters) and will feature an Asian/anime theme, with lots of new locations with a distinctly Japanese look, including pink cherry tree blossoms, Asian markets and creatures that look like theyve popped out of a Studio Ghibli film. There will also be Yokai demons, Titans, new mystical powers and the arrival of King Kong and Godzilla. A giant floating turtle will be one of the cool new additions. Its not only adorable, it moves around the map. New movement mechanics include rolling and wall-running, making this the most parkour of all Fortnite seasons. Before Chapter 5 ends, players can join in on the big season-ending event, The Finale, which will not only be a massive Juice WRLD concert, but features the return of The Device. This is something of an odd event, given that the rapperreal name Jarad Anthony Higginspassed away in 2019. A new Snoop Dogg track also be part of the event, which you can read more about right here. A free Juice WRLD skin and other goodies are available in the store now, but only until the end of the season. When Does Chapter 5 End And Chapter 6 Begin?FortniteCredit: EpicThe official end-time for Chapter 5 and this Remix season is 11pm PT / 2am ET on Saturday, November 30th / Sunday, December 1st but since this is the end of an entire Chapter, its also possible that the season will end directly after The Finale event. If thats the case, well see the season end and servers go down sometime after 11am PT / 2pm ET, since the event is roughly 20 minutes long. Its possible that the game will remain live until later. Edit: Clearly, now that the event is over this is not the case, so the original downtime should be accurate.MORE FROMFORBES VETTEDThe new Chapter will go live Sunday morning barring any hiccups, and players will be able to update their games the moment servers go back online and dive into the map. Without official confirmation, we can only speculate on when Chapter 5 will end but its a safe bet that by Sunday morning youll be cruising around the new map. Ill update this post if we get a more specific end-time, or if the servers go down.Heres the trailer:The other bit of exciting news is the return of OG Fortnite, which includes the games original map and will let players go battle it out on original locations with the games original loot. According to Epic Games youll be able to play through older seasons as well. This new (old) mode will go live permanently on December 6th.Its an exciting weekend for Fortnite, basically. Im excited to drop in!Update: Fortnite servers are down and the big Chapter 6, Season 1 update is in progress. Server downtime is expected to last around 8 hours, with downtime beginning at 10pm ET. That means the game should go back online at around 6am ET / 3am PT. Obviously, this is an estimate and downtime could take longer or the game could go live earlier than expected. Either way, Fortnites new season will go live early Sunday morning. Heres the new map:Fortnite Chapter 6 MapCredit: EpicAs the wind blows, the sun rises on a beautiful new island, shrouded in mystery and mystical energy. In its darkest corners, demons dwell, wreaking havoc with their masks of chaotic power. Great heroes must rise to drive back the ancient evils that roam this land. Become a ronin and cut through the darkness to find the light in Fortnite Battle Royale Chapter 6 Season 1: HUNTERS (Demon Hunters)! Epic Games posted in the new Chapters official blog post.Epic also released new information about the new Simple Edit function that promises to make building edits much easier to pull off, giving those of us who were never the best builders to begin with new hopeand master-builders even more of an edge:Simple Edit, a new build setting you can toggle on in the Settings menu, allows for editing builds with a single button press. The resulting edit is based on the part of the building youre looking at rather than being painted manually it automatically executes building edits immediately, removing the step of selecting tiles altogether. Simple Edit makes editing on the fly a breeze, and it should also prove helpful for players who are new to building in Fortnite or interested in learning. Simple Edit allows for a smaller subset of edits to choose from, and masters of the current edit system will have more edit options available. As with any major addition to Fortnite, well be gathering data and feedback on Simple Edit and may make adjustments to the system in the future. This, along with all the new movement mechanics, magical powers and a brand new map should give Fortnite players a ton to play around with as December kicks off. Ill be diving in tomorrow to try to earn the new Umbrella.

  • In Waves And War: A Film About Navy SEALS, PTSD, Addiction And Psychedelics
    www.forbes.com
Navy SEALS endure rigorous training followed by multiple deployments to war zones, often leading to ... [+] devastating acute and chronic health problems.gettyIn Waves and War tells the story of Navy SEALS who are deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan time and time again, only to return stateside and experience a different type of war: a battle on their bodies and brains. The documentary, which premiered at the DOC NYC film festival, reveals how nightmares, explosive outbursts, severe pain, alcoholism and depression consumed the lives of these wartime heroes. Hopelessness and suicidal thoughts were the only way out, until they discovered an experimental treatment called ibogaine.Directors Jon Shenk and Bonni Cohen describe the arduous physical and mental demands of training endured by these highly specialized servicemembers through the lenses of three SEALS, Marcus Capone, Matty Roberts and DJ Shipley. Through interviews, flashbacks and animation, we learn about the devastating impacts of multiple deployments to combat zones on the physical and psychological wellbeing of these SEALS, some of whom were only 17 when they first joined. In one harrowing scene, Roberts arm is blown off. In rehab, his many diagnoses include traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Discharged due to injury, Roberts was riddled with survivors guilt and frustration with his inability to help his brothers in arms on the battlefield. Shipley describes 2005-2010 as a very busy time, being deployed to nearly 200 missions. He later struggled with a constellation of symptoms including depression and memory loss but didnt tell anyone for five years.Veterans Health CrisisFor over a decade, I have treated multiple veterans in my roles as a former primary care physician and now as an addiction medicine specialist. Nearly every veteran patient shared the same experiences as the SEALS did in this film. Chronic back pain, headaches, panic attacks, memory loss, depression and substance use disorders (SUD) were just a few of the many health problems faced by my patients. In fact, veterans mental health is a national health crisis. PTSD and depression are the most publicized mental health problems but anxiety, schizophrenia, SUD and increased suicidality are also common. Roughly 20 veterans die each day by suicide. According to the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, the suicide rate among veterans is 57% higher than that of the general population. In addition, 88% of veterans caregivers report increased stress or anxiety. Treatment is available but many veterans dont access the help they need and deserve. Others receive all sorts of medicines and therapies without much success, including the SEALS featured in this documentary.MORE FROMFORBES VETTEDAn Experimental Treatment To The RescuePsychedelic substances such as ibogaine, LSD and psilocybin can have profound effects on the brain ... [+] by altering perception, cognition and emotional experiences.gettyAfter countless tours and a whirlwind of health issues, Capone asked for a medical retirement. Reasons noted in the letter included a life permeated by alcohol, depression, nightmares and guilt. I grabbed my pistol every time the doorbell rang, recalls Capone. Thoughts of taking his life consumed him: I thought my family would be better off without me. At the VA hospital, Capone underwent a cornucopia of diagnostic tests including sleep studies and brain imaging as well as treatments such as talk therapy and ten different medications. He was getting worse, which prompted his wife, Amber, to seek alternatives online. She found a program in Mexico where veterans were getting better after receiving ibogaine, a psychoactive compound found in the root bark of Gabon, Africa, and 5-MeO-DMT, a psychedelic substance secreted by the Sonoran Desert Toad. In fact, I first learned and wrote about these ibogaine treatment centers in Mexico from Lucy Walkers documentary, Of Night and Light: The Story of Iboga and Ibogaine, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival The film told the story of Howard and Norma Lotsof and their heroic, pioneering efforts in increasing research and safe access to ibogaine in the United States. Why Mexico? Despite decades of research showing psychiatric and medical health benefits, psychedelic drugs such as ibogaine remain as Schedule I by the Controlled Substances Act. That is, the federal government deems these substances as having no medical benefits and having high abuse potential. But if you ask the Navy SEALS in Waves, theyll tell you a different story, one infused with hope. All three SEALS travelled to Mexico and underwent five days of ibogaine treatment followed by 5-MeO-DMT. Their traumatic experiencesfrom childhood to warcame to life through animation in deeply personal and individualized ways. Each individual was monitored closely by staff, before, during and after the medications were administered. Afterwards, each SEAL felt that the psychedelics helped them. They felt uplifted, as if a dark cloud was lifted. They saw the world from a different perspective, not one laden with guilt, shame, loneliness or depression. It was a new day, reflected one SEAL.Ibogaine In The U.S.?In the film, Nolan Williams, MD, a psychiatrist and researcher in the Stanford Ibogaine Brain Study, describes TBI as the signature injury among these veterans. His team published a study early this year in Nature Medicine of 30 U.S. special forces veterans who showed a significant reduction in PTSD, depression and anxiety after treatment with ibogaine. We have a tool that can mend the mind, explains Dr. Williams. It was a new day, reflected one SEAL.In fact, the health benefits of psychedelics have been long known to scientists. Clinical applications of ibogaine include management of depression, addiction and psychological trauma. The biggest challenge in the U.S. remains regulatory, not medical. Ibogaines classification as a Schedule I controlled substance prohibits easy access or availability. Another challenge is administration. Unlike other chronic conditions such as diabetes or hypothyroidism that can be treated with a daily pill, patients receiving ibogaine must do so under medical supervision due to the drugs potential cardiac toxicity and other side effects. I would also like to see wider use of the medication as trauma, sadly, is not limited to veterans. Survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and natural disasters such as earthquakes and tornadoes could also benefit from psychedelic therapy. We need a lot more research, advocacy as well as declassification of psychedelic substances. In the meantime, there is reason for hope. Speaking to these brave Navy SEALS and their equally courageous wives reinforced my belief in the human spirit in the face of hardship. We just need to keep on fighting for health and humanity.

  • Take a flight over Mars Ares Vallis in a new video from Mars Express
    www.digitaltrends.com
A new video shows what it would be like to cruise over the surface of Mars, zooming in to the planet from orbit and into a channel called the Ares Vallis. Created from data taken by the European Space Agencys (ESA) Mars Express mission, it shows the region where NASAs Pathfinder mission landed in 1997.Fly around Ares Vallis on MarsCredit: ESA/DLR/FU Berlin and NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS. Data processing/animation: Bjrn Schreiner, Image Processing Group (FU Berlin)Recommended VideosThe important stops along the journey are labeled in the video so you can see the sights of Mars as the camera passes over them. The flight is across a region called Oxia Palus, which covers a huge area of over 300,000 square miles, which hosts the famous Ares Vallis channel.ESA/DLR/FU Berlin & NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSSThe tour begins with Mars as seen from orbit, with a rectangle indicating the area where the tour will be focused. On zooming in to the region, you can see the varied terrain of the Mars surface, beginning with the Pathfinder landing site where the Sojourner rover explored. Then the channel of the Ares Vallis comes into view stretching over 1,000 miles in length, it is one of Marss longest outflow channels.RelatedChannels like this are important for scientists to study as they show where water once flowed on the planets surface, allowing researchers to build up a picture of which regions were rich in water and where life could possibly have evolved. As the tour continues, two craters come into view. Named Masursky and Sagan, there is also evidence that water was here, too, as the rim of the Masursky crater shows erosion likely caused by water from the Tiu Valles system located nearby.Another notable feature of the crater is the jagged, jumbled rocks located within it. Known, rather dramatically, as chaos terrain, these ridges and plains are often seen on Mars and are related to the historical presence of water as well. Its distinctive muddled appearance is thought to arise when subsurface water is suddenly released from underground to the surface, ESA explains. The resulting loss of support from below causes the surface to slump and break into blocks of various sizes and shapes.Further craters are visible along the tour, many of which also have evidence of once being filled with water. You can see the direction in which the water once flowed from the tail shapes left on the surface. Finally, the channel comes to an end in the smooth Oxia Planum region, where ESAs Rosalind Franklin rover will land following its launch in 2028, before the camera zooms out to show the whole region in all its fascinating glory.Editors Recommendations

  • The BLUETTI Handsfree 2 is a solar backpack and power station Its $249 off
    www.digitaltrends.com
html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd" While youre busy shopping through all of the Best Black Friday deals, heres a little something that might pique your interest. Youll be even more excited if you spend a lot of time outdoors or off-grid. You might want to wait on grabbing that Black Friday portable power station deal. Allow me to explain. The BLUETTI Handsfree 2 is a backpack, like any other outdoor pack you might encounter, except for one thing. Its also a power station and solar generator. Believe me when I say this thing is insane and super useful. But for Black Friday, theres a deal that includes the BLUETTI Handsfree 2 and a 100-watt solar panel to charge it on the go. Normally $799, its yours for just $550, saving you $249. Wow. You have to read what it can all do, so dont leave just yet.BLUETTIAt first glance, it looks like any regular outdoor or hiking backpack. It has a lot of functions that would serve you well on the trail or while camping, too. For example, there are MOLLE hangable points to hang your sleeping bag, tent, or solar panels. It has a travel essentials zone for stowing shoes, clothing, medicine, and necessities. It has a photography gear zone for lenses, cameras, and even drones. It also has the much-needed, power station zone where the power station tech is stored.Like any other power station, the integrated one can be charged via solar, auto ports, AC outlets, and generators. The solar panel that comes with it can plug right into the station, and then hang from your backpack while you travel. That entire time it powers up the station inside. The entire pack is IPX4 splash-resistant and has load-bearing belts, back panel support, waist pads, waist belts, shoulder straps, and chest straps. So, basically, its super comfortable and supportive everywhere it needs to be. Its also large enough to carry everything you need for the day while youre out hiking or camping.RelatedWhile all of that is incredible. Whats truly exciting to me is the Black Friday price. Maybe Im alone here but saving $249 on something like this is awesome. Normally $799, its yours for $550 after you clip an on-page $50 off coupon. I have no idea how long this deal is going to last but Im going to shop it myself I think. When I get my hands on one Ill let you know what I think, but if I were you, I wouldnt wait around for that info. The deal will be long gone by then.Editors Recommendations

  • The upside-down capacitor in mid-90s Macs, proven and documented by hobbyists

Apple always did things differently The upside-down capacitor in mid-90s Macs, proven and documented by hobbyists A "copy/paste error" on a Mac logic board has led to some restoration problems. Kevin Purdy Nov 29, 2024 7:02 am | 121 The capacitor is not upside-down, visually/orientation-wise, but in voltage. You'll notice if you try to replace it and smell ozone. Credit: Doug Brown The capacitor is not upside-down, visually/orientation-wise, but in voltage. You'll notice if you try to replace it and smell ozone. Credit: Doug Brown Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn more"Am I the first person to discover this?" is a tricky question when it comes to classic Macs, some of the most pored-over devices on the planet. But there's a lot to suggest that user paul.gaastra, on the 68kMLA vintage Mac forum, has been right for more than a decade: One of the capacitors on the Apple mid-'90s Mac LC III was installed backward due to faulty silkscreen printing on the board. It seems unlikely that Apple will issue a factory recall for the LC IIIor the related LC III+, or Performa models 450, 460, 466, or 467 with the same board design. The "pizza box" models, sold from 19931996, came with a standard 90-day warranty, and most of them probably ran without issue. It's when people try to fix up these boards and replace the capacitors, in what is generally a good practice (re-capping), that they run into trouble. The Macintosh LC III, forerunner to a bunch of computers with a single misaligned capacitor. Credit: Akbkuku / Wikimedia Commons The Macintosh LC III, forerunner to a bunch of computers with a single misaligned capacitor. Credit: Akbkuku / Wikimedia Commons Doug Brown took part in the original 2013 forum discussion, and has seen it pop up elsewhere. Now, having "bought a Performa 450 complete with its original leaky capacitors," he can double-check Apple's board layout 30 years later and detail it all in a blog post (seen originally at the Adafruit blog). He confirms what a bunch of multimeter-wielding types long suspected: Apple put the plus where the minus should be.Specifically, in the corner of the LC III board, near the power supply connector, there are three capacitors nearby, C19, C21, and C22. Each is boxed in with white silkscreen markings, to guide the factory assemblers and future repairs. Each capacitor sits on one of the "rails" (DC power from the supply). While C19 and C21 are properly taking on +5V and +12V lines from the power supply connector, the bottom C22 capacitor is taking a -5V rail into its positive terminal. This capacitor (an SMD electrolytic) is not supposed to take negative voltage.Brown notes that the predecessor Mac LC and LC II had the correct connections, as did the LC 475, which uses the same power supply scheme. This makes him "confident that Apple made a boo-boo on the LC III," or "basically the hardware equivalent of a copy/paste error when you're writing code."Making sure rehabbers don't make the same mistakeWhy was this not noticed earlier, other than a couple forum threads seen by dedicated board rehabbers? There are a few reasons. For one thing, the rail was only used for a serial port or certain expansion card needs, so a capacitor failure, or out-of-spec power output, may not have been noticed. The other bit is that the original capacitor was rated for 16V, so even with -5V across it, it might not have failed, at least while it was relatively fresh. And it would not have failed in quite so spectacular a fashion as to generate stories and myths. As to whether Apple knew about this but decided against acting on a somewhat obscure fault, one that might never cause real problems? By all means, let us know if you worked at Apple during that time and can clue us in. Ars has emailed Apple with this tremendously relevant question, the day before Thanksgiving, and will update this post with any comment.By posting his analysis, Brown hopes to provide anyone else re-capping one of these devices with a bright, reflective warning sign to ignore Apple's markings and install C22 the electrically correct way. Brown, reached by email, said that he heard from another hobbyist that the reverse voltage "would explain why the replacement cap" they installed "blew up." Some restoration types, like Retro Viator, noticed the problem and fixed it pre-detonation.Modern rehabbers tend to use tantalum capacitors to replace the fluid-filled kind that probably damaged the board they're working on. Tantalum tends to react more violently to too much or reverse voltage, Brown wrote me.Should C22 or other faulty capacitors destroy your LC III board entirely, Brown notes that 68kMLA member max1zzz has made a reverse-engineered full logic board schematic.Kevin PurdySenior Technology ReporterKevin PurdySenior Technology Reporter Kevin is a senior technology reporter at Ars Technica, covering open-source software, PC gaming, home automation, repairability, e-bikes, and tech history. • 29 countries that offer digital nomad visas to remote workers
    www.businessinsider.com
29 countries offer residence visas for remote workers, or "digital nomad visas."Spain and Italy have joined the growing list of countries offering digital nomad visa programs.Governments hope the visas will help develop more sustainable tourist economies. In the lead-up to the election, Business Insider reported millions of Americans were considering leaving the country if former President Donald Trump won his 2024 campaign. After his victory was announced, searches for the phrase "moving to Canada" spiked along with inquiries about international digital nomad visas. The specialized visas allow remote workers to live and work in countries like Malta, Portugal, and Costa Rica as long as their income comes from outside the country. And as some American tourists consider moving abroad, dozens of countries have, in recent years, launched special visas designed specifically for remote workers to drive tourism in their countries. In some countries, the visas have become so popular that they've had to start turning people away. As of October 2024, for example, Cyprus is no longer accepting digital nomads after it filled the 500 slots it had available for its visa program.Nonetheless, there are still plenty of options elsewhere. Here are 29 countries that offer visas specifically for remote workers, the minimum income required to apply, and how much they cost.Europe digital nomad visasMalta Malta, an island south of Italy, allows nomads to legally stay in the country for one year with a chance of renewal. Scott BessentScott Bessent, founder of Key Square Group hedge fund, was nominated for Treasury secretary by President-elect Trump. Drew Angerer/Getty Images Trump tapped Scott Bessent, founder of Key Square Group hedge fund, to serve as Treasury secretary on November 22. In this prized cabinet role, Bessent will be expected to follow through on Trump's economic agenda around tax cuts and tariffs."Scott has long been a strong advocate of the America First Agenda," Trump said in a statement.Bessent is the founder and CEO of Key Square Group investment firm, which Trump mentioned in his statement. Notably, the president-elect left out how Bessent spent a large part of his career working with billionaire Democratic donor George Soros, a contentious figure in the conservative world. Between 2011 and 2015, Bessent served as the chief investment officer at Soros Capital Management.Still, Bessent was seen as a frontrunner for Trump's Treasury secretary for the better part of the year, as the billionaire hedge fund manager defended Trump's economic policies around de-regulation and tariff increases. At the Republican National Convention in July, Bessent said it was "absurd" to think Trump's policies would be inflationary, MarketWatch reported. Howard LutnickHoward Lutnick has served as president-elect Donald Trump's transition team cochair. ANGELA WEISS / AFP Trump tapped Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick as his next Secretary of Commerce.Lutnick, who also co-chairs the president-elect's transition team, had been in the running for treasury secretary. The president-elect said Lutnick would lead his administration's tariff policy. During a pre-election rally, Lutnick extolled the virtues of a much earlier US economy that collected significant tariffs."At the turn of the century, our economy was rocking," Lutnick said at a Madison Square Garden rally, praising 1900s America. "We had no income tax, and all we had was tariffs."In selecting the 63-year-old Wall Street titan as his commerce secretary, Trump is returning to the playbook he used during his first time in office.Wilbur Ross, the so-called "King of Bankruptcy" and a long-time Wall Street fixture, was Trump's only commerce secretary during his first term a remarkable milestone considering the unprecedented upheaval that engulfed most of Trump's cabinet.Ross' department played a major role in the Trump administration's efforts to hold Chinese companies accountable for doing business with Iran and North Korea. Marco RubioSenator Marco Rubio of Florida. Saul Loeb/Pool via AP Trump has selected Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as his nominee for Secretary of State, elevating his onetime political rival and the current vice chair of the Intelligence Committee to one of the highest-profile roles in his upcoming administration."Marco is a Highly Respected Leader, and a very powerful Voice for Freedom," Trump said in a statement announcing the pick. "He will be a strong Advocate for our Nation, a true friend to our Allies, and a fearless Warrior who will never back down to our adversaries."With Rubio's selection, Trump is installing a hawk of China, Iran, and Venezuela to help shape the country's foreign policy during a tumultuous time throughout the world.Trump in 2024 made inroads with Arab American voters in Michigan, a key swing state, over Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas war. The president-elect has indicated that he wants to see an end to the conflict in Gaza, but it is unclear what his plan would entail to do so.Rubio, a former Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, was first elected to the Senate in 2010 and was easily reelected in 2016 and 2022.In 2016, Rubio ran for president and clashed with Trump throughout the GOP primaries, with his then-rival pegging the senator as "Little Marco."
