• The author of the seminal book about loneliness explains what were getting wrong
    www.vox.com
With the holiday season upon us, its important to grapple with the loneliness many Americans face every day. Its often more intensely felt in the times when you are expected to be surrounded by the warm embrace of family and friends. And, increasingly, that warm embrace isnt happening. Americans spend more time at home alone than they did 20 years ago, according to a recent analysis of federal data. The numbers went up dramatically during the pandemic and never came back down. Across the board, Americans have fallen away from activities that involve or require community. Religious service attendance is down dramatically. Two decades ago, over 40 percent of US adults attended religious services every week or nearly every week. Now, just 30 percent of Americans say the same, according to Gallup polling. Other metrics of civic engagement have dropped off too: According to one AmeriCorps study, just 20 percent of Gen Z volunteer their time to help others, compared to almost 30 percent of Gen X. Loneliness has been on the steady march for many decades, and one man has been watching its advance: Robert Putnam, a public policy professor at Harvard University and the author of 15 books, including the 2001 bestseller Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community. The book was based on a simple premise: Once, Americans joined bowling leagues. Now, they are going bowling by themselves. In the book, Putnam extends the metaphor to speak to all our social connections, saying that their drop-off speaks to the decline of our democracy. This half-century of civic decline is charted in a documentary about Putnams life that came out in 2023, called Join or Die. We wanted to hear more about the importance of a culture that embraces community activities, so we reached out to the man who inspired a thousand clubs himself. Noel King spoke with Putnam though he prefers to be called Bob for Today, Explained to discuss if bowling alone has grown even more acute, the role technology plays, and how to reverse the trend. Below is an excerpt of their conversation, edited for length and clarity. Theres much more in the full podcast, so listen to Today, Explained on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get podcasts.Noel KingVolunteering is good for the person who is doing the volunteering, right? Is that a reason to volunteer?Robert PutnamTheres a lot of evidence that if youre volunteering to help somebody else, youre probably getting more benefits out of it than they are, because there are all sorts of physiological changes. People after volunteering are happier than if you hadnt volunteered. Its one reason to volunteer. You dont have to choose between the reasons. In writing the book Bowling Alone, I talked about the consequences of our connections with other people, both our actual in-person connections and our connections through political organizations. And that, as a community in which people are more connected with one another, the whole community functions better, not just the two people involved in a given exchange. Let me give an example from education. If I, as a parent, get involved in my childs school, I join the PTA or I volunteer in the classroom, that turns out to be good for my child. But the astonishing thing is my getting involved has even more effect on the success and the happiness of other kids in the school. In the book Bowling Alone, which was written [about] 25 years ago, I talked about the decline in these connections, decline in what I called social capital. And I said, Gosh, if this continues, its going to be bad for American democracy. You know, were going to have more polarized politics, and so on. And the reason that theres now a little bit of a new wave of interest in my work is that I turned out to be right. Even more right than I thought. If youve not noticed, American politics is in a pickle right now, and the fundamental reason for that is because for the last 30 or 40 years, we as a country have become less and less connected with one another in my jargon, with less and less social capital. Noel KingDoes the data bear it out? Because it feels like were more isolated now, and it felt that way when you wrote Bowling Alone 25 years ago. Is it true?Robert PutnamYes. Once upon a time there was a debate, there was a thought that maybe we dont actually have to be in somebodys presence. That we could see them on Zoom or social media would be just as good as actual social connections. For quite a while, the evidence has been that Facebook is not as good as bowling leagues. That is, you dont get the same benefit from connecting with people via social media as you do from actually connecting with them face to face. Thats what the evidence has shown. I can tell you when public opinion on that changed. It was just about November 25th of 2020, at the height of the pandemic, and everybody in America realized that hugging Grandma was not the same thing as actually seeing Grandma over Zoom. And it isnt.Noel KingPeople who might otherwise not leave the house very much join Reddit communities; people have WhatsApp chat groups with their relatives in other countries. I text my 14-year-old niece, who I dont get to see very often. I hear you saying the technology has not been good for us and I want to make sure that were sure about that.Robert PutnamIm not saying that electronic connections are of no use to us. Ive got lots of grandchildren and Im texting with them or emailing with them literally every day. Im not saying that social media or other forms of electronic connection are literally no good, I am saying theyre not as good as face-to-face ties.Noel KingSo if, currently, were at a low point for social connection, what brought us here?Robert PutnamIn the beginning of the 20th century, around about 1900, America was very polarized politically. Our politics were tribal. We were very unequal. There was economically a big gap between the rich, who were living on the Upper East Side of New York, and the huddled masses, the poor immigrants on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. We were very socially disconnected. Wed had connections back on the farm, where we knew other people, whether the farm was in Iowa or in southern Italy, but wed all moved. There had been a huge movement from the rural areas to the cities, and we did not know our new neighbors, and so we were very socially isolated. And actually, we were culturally very self-centered. We were an I society rather than a we society. We didnt think of ourselves as having a lot in common. And then beginning about 1910 none of these things are super exact but about 1910, all of those things began to change and they moved in a different, better direction for a half-century or more. So from roughly 1910 to roughly 1965 or 1970, every year we became less polarized politically, less socially isolated, less unequal, or more equal, and more of a we society. So we went from being an I society around 1900 to being a we society around, roughly speaking, 1965. The movements of the 1960s which you no doubt you dont remember, [but] I do remember that period that was the culmination of a half-century long increase in political participation, increase in connecting with other people, increase in cooperation across party lines, increase in equality. And I have to say, this is just about the time when I personally began to vote. So you may think I personally brought these problems on America in the middle 60s. All those lines turned and for the next half-century, up to now, every year we got more socially isolated, more politically disconnected, more unequal. We lost it all.Noel KingCould it work to sell joining clubs, volunteering, in-person engagement as, This will make you feel good, I promise? And the side effect is that its good for society, its good for democracy but if youre going to do it, do it for yourself? Think of it as a kind of self-care.Robert PutnamThe danger to your life expectancy from social isolation is as big a risk factor for premature death as smoking. If you did smoke and you had a choice, should you smoke? Or should you join a club? By all means, join the club! There are huge personal benefits from connecting with other people, including joining. The most important reason is actually that you should connect with other people. You will add years to your life expectancy.Noel KingYoure going to live longer. And also youre going to save American society.Robert PutnamBy the way, youre also going to save American democracy. Thats right.Youve read 1 article in the last monthHere at Vox, we're unwavering in our commitment to covering the issues that matter most to you threats to democracy, immigration, reproductive rights, the environment, and the rising polarization across this country. Our mission is to provide clear, accessible journalism that empowers you to stay informed and engaged in shaping our world. • The Witcher 4 will be bigger and better than The Witcher 3 says CD Projekt
    metro.co.uk
The Witcher 4 will be bigger and better than The Witcher 3 says CD ProjektAdam StarkeyPublished November 29, 2024 5:58pmUpdated November 29, 2024 5:58pm Polaris development kicked up a notch this week (CD Projekt)CD Projekt has shared some insight into The Witcher 4s development, describing the next entry as bigger and greater than its predecessor.Development on The Witcher 4 officially ramped up this month, but we still know very little about the next game in the series, including who will be the protaganist.Creator CD Projekt still hasnt given the sequel an official title, beyond the codename Polaris. All we know is it will be the first game in a new trilogy, and will involve original lead Geralt but not as the main focus.CD Projekt has now shared more details about the games production in a new interview and, notably, how theyre hoping to avoid repeating the disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077.Polaris sees the studio switch from its in-house game engine to Unreal Engine 5 for the first time, a move which, according to CD Projekt, was not a result of Cyberpunk 2077s launch, but instead motivated by the need to juggle multiple projects at once. The way we built stuff in the past was very one-sided, like one project at a time, CD Projekts vice president of technology, Charles Tremblay, told Eurogamer. We pushed the limit but also we saw that if we wanted to have a multi-project at the same time, building in parallel, sharing technology together, it is not easy.Tremblay goes onto explain how this new technology will not impact the ambitious nature of the studios games, describing Polaris as better and bigger than The Witcher 3. Cyberpunk 2077 is in much better shape now (CD Projekt)Again, I will not say its easy, but I think that we have some cool stuff going, and hopefully that will have some good showcase [of the technology], he added. The only thing I will say is that changing the tech for us does not change the fact that we always will be ambitious. And the next game we do will not be smaller, and it will not be worse. So it will be better, bigger, greater than The Witcher 3, it will be better than Cyberpunk because for us, its unacceptable [to launch that way]. We dont want to go back.Even if there will be some sweaty moments and maybe even some bad stuff happening, still, I think that we will try everything we can to make it even more than what we achieved in the past years. So the technology should not be a blocker for us, basically. In light of Cyberpunk 2077s launch, which was particularly bad on last gen consoles, Tremblay suggests the studio might prioritise certain platforms at the outset for Polaris just dont expect a PC-only situation. The strategy we want to do Im just trying not to say too much, bear with me most likely, the launch, we will not have a PC-only launch, for example, he added. I dont think this is a strategy we want to adopt right now. That being said, will it mean that we will have lets say there were 20 platforms available well have 20 at launch? Maybe not.Along with Polaris, CD Projekt is working on a new IP codenamed Project Hadar, a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, and a new game set in the Witcher universe titled Project Sirius. A remake of the original The Witcher game is also in the works, although thats being handled by external studio Fools Theory.More TrendingThe Witcher 4 is likely still several years away, but its possible we could see some sort of update (an actual title, perhaps?) at The Game Awards on December 13. HWKN's new iLive Campus in Frankfurt, designed in collaboration with AI+P, addresses the younger generation's need for flexible and affordable living solutions. This consciously unique building occupies a large corner site adjacent to the Frankfurt School of Management and Finance and features 1,000 high-design apartment units for students, making it the largest planned student and serviced-apartment project in Germany. HWKN, along with their client, the German-based iLive, and AI+P, incorporated another innovative living alternative: a lively, youth-oriented hotel, part of the Rioca Hotel group.Save this picture!Save this picture! The ground floor offers an array of social hubs. There's a mailbox area, a welcome bar, a gaming corridor, complete with pool tables, foosball tables, and more. The space also offers numerous co-work opportunities both on the ground floor, and in the penthouse restaurant. As hybrid work schedules continue to rise in popularity, HWKN acknowledges the need for communal work spaces, only further emphasizing the overall ethos of iLive Frankfurt by redefining the notion of an extended stay, offering various options in terms of size, occupancy duration, and socialization. iLive Frankfurt caters to the spontaneous lifestyle choices of today's young generation.Save this picture!Save this picture!iLive Frankfurt stands out on Adickesallee Strasse with its striking faade. This is the front of the Hotel Rioca, featuring large windows and a brick cross-hatching pattern, with open terraces every two stories running along the face of the building, extending inwards and outwards. This design creates a faade that appears in motion, with individual folds rippling across its face. HWKN partner Robert May describes this design as "a marriage of the rational and emotional." The undulating faade also allows for natural planting on its terraces, adding a green element that is both surprising and sought-after. To prevent the iLive campus from appearing unnecessarily imposing, HWKN's design incorporates 'moments of local difference.' For example, the western frontage changes from brick to lighter stucco. Atop the middle section of these buildings is a set-back covered terrace, with a columned faade similar to that on the lower floors. Metal accent handrails add luminosity and spark. HWKN envisioned the two housing alternatives on the iLive campus as a singular entity.Save this picture! The firm in collaboration with the landscape firm Future Green included shared outdoor amenities such as a kitchen with a grill, a home theater for movie nights, rooftop terraces with panoramic views, sports facilities including a volleyball court and a multi-sport field, and social spaces like a Rioca Bar, a community area with games, and a communal kitchen. Brooklyn-based architectural firm Almost Studio has designed the 1,500-square-foot flagship boutique for the popular emerging fashion designer Sandy Liang. The design draws loosely from the playful, process-based aesthetic of Liang's eponymous line, as well as from the industrial interiors of the surrounding Chinatown/Lower East Side neighborhood, where Liang grew up and her family has worked since the 1970s. Previously, space was occupied by a laundromat.Save this picture! The project is a story of firsts for both the architects and the clientit is Almost Studio's inaugural retail store design and Sandy Liang's first physical boutique. The project is also driven by deep personal ties between collaborators. Almost Studio's co-founder Dorian Booth and Liang are a couple, and Liang's father's company, Sun Sun Contracting Inc., served as the general contractor. Liang's family is also deeply connected to the surrounding neighborhood. The new boutique is within several blocks of Liang's design studio, her grandmother's home, and her father's restaurantthe iconic Congee Village.Save this picture!Almost Studio, comprised of Booth and co-founder Anthony Gagliardi, began designing the boutique in August 2019. Located on the ground floor of a five-story brick building built in 1900, the space previously housed a laundromat whose walls were lined with washers, dryers, folding tables, and kinetic clothing racks. To begin, the firm extracted all appliances, existing ceiling tiles, and a low tile platform encircling the space. The original grey concrete floor was patched and sealed, the ceiling was completely replaced to accommodate ductwork for a new HVAC system (the space was previously unventilated and without air-conditioning), and the glass storefront was framed in stainless steel. An open, albeit narrow rectangular space resulted.Save this picture!Save this picture!Almost Studio's principal challenge was to "generate a spatial logic that allowed the store to feel cohesive, while also inserting an enfilade of individualized areas within the irregular and narrow space," says Gagliardi. The firm also aimed to express the dynamic playfulness of Liang's clothing line in architectural form, as well as nod to the aesthetic and spatial qualities of the original laundromat.Save this picture! The organizational strategy conceived by Almost Studio hinges on a series of spatial and material layers that distinguish different areas and usesa program Booth describes as "a stage set with overlapping backdrops." Arranged linearly from the front of the store to the back, these areas include clothing display and shopping; point of sale; dressing rooms and bathroom; and kitchen and office.Save this picture!Upon entering the boutique, one first encounters the shopping area, which is 60-feet-long and telescopes from 20-feet wide to as narrow as 12-feet wide in some areas. Distinctive custom clothing rods made from raw, cold-rolled steel line both walls, extending back from the storefront window to the point of sale and dressing rooms. The display system is both playful and industrial, combining a straight rod and a second irregular rod that loops, rises, and dives around it. The rod's playfully meandering route alludes to the original laundromat's clothing conveyors; the jungle gyms found on local Chinatown playgrounds, and the balance of utility and whimsy expressed in Liang's clothing. Functionally, the curved rod also provides opportunities to display special pieces and create secondary spaces.Save this picture!Save this picture! As the rods extend towards the rear, they intersect with a trio of metal mesh curtains, shaped like halved archways, which suspend from the ceiling. These segment the shopping area into three roomsdisplay system, point of sale, and dressing roomswhile still maintaining transparency between them. A cylindrical void cuts the mesh curtains on an angle leading to the point of sale and dressing rooms, amplifying the perceived depth of the space through a forced perspective as they recede into the back of the boutique.Save this picture!Throughout the shopping area, the walls are left in a transitional state. Pink primer, usually embedded behind a top coat of paint, is left exposed and covered with pencil marks from the construction process, spackling, and scrawled measurements. The pink hue reads as playful and the pencil markings allude to a transparent design processone that also manifests in Liang's clothing, where hardware such as grommets, buttons, and zippers that are traditionally tucked away become visible decorative elements.Save this picture! The material palette of the dressing rooms and bathroom, which are gathered into a single rectangular volume at the shopping area's rear, also strike a balance between unfinished and finished, raw and refined, industrial and luxurious, utility and whimsy. While clad in raw plywood, doors open to reveal jewel-box interiors. Walls are encrusted with green granite tiles and custom mirrors by Almost Studio. Across from the dressing rooms, the point of sale is clad in lustrous green marble. The green stone that punctuates these areas also nods to Liang's upbringingthe materials are a staple of her childhood homes and her father's restaurants.Save this picture!Moving further into the space, a polycarbonate sliding door and a thickened, arched threshold divides the public shopping area from the private, back-of-house kitchen and office. Passing through the door reveals a 5-feet by 10-feet stainless steel "sleeve," into which a kitchenette, whose custom steel cabinetry draws from Chinatown's industrial kitchens, and a CYC wall for seamless photoshoots are tucked. Just beyond, a large custom, natural canvas curtain wraps the office walls, hiding stainless steel storage shelves and creating distinction between the office and kitchenette. The curtain's soft, albeit heavy folds simultaneously soften and compress the boutique's back-of-house spaces.Save this picture!Save this picture!Overall, the project extends Almost Studio's view that the built environment is always "in process, almost complete," says Booth. "Nothing is ever finished; a project is always becoming." The boutique also offered a platform for the firm to continue exploring spatial and aesthetic references from outside of the canonin this case, Chinatown kitchens, construction sites, laundromats, playgrounds, and fashionand a play between high and low materials. These are approaches that Almost Studio and Liang share.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:New York, NY, United StatesLocation to be used only as a reference. • Fortnite Battle Pass Chapter 6 Season 1: All Skins, Including Godzilla
    www.gamespot.com
The Fortnite battle pass in Chapter 6 Season 1 is, like its season as a whole, heavily inspired by Japanese culture. This season's pack of eight skins, several emotes, and dozens of other rewards like back bling, gliders, and wraps mostly follow this theme--much like the last chapter launched with a heavy Greek mythology theme. In this image gallery guide, we'll be taking you on a tour of every skin the game has to offer in its Chapter 6 Season 1 battle pass. Once downtime lifts, we'll then update this space with every single battle pass reward shown in the game at launch. That means you can expect 100+ rewards in full, including the two licensed skins in Big Hero 6's Baymax and the Japanese kaiju icon Godzilla. Along with these two bulky new characters come six Fortnite originals, including another new skin for the new face of the franchise, Hope, who has been getting as much or even more screentime than Jonesy as of late.Elsewhere in the pass, you'll see new emotes, instruments for use in Fortnite Festival and beyond, and of course, all the new skins automatically get Lego versions whenever they're appropriate for the platform's age-gated content.Naturally, this season will surely see many more crossovers and collabs come to the game later. Normally the item shop will sell something closely tied to a battle pass skin--does that suggest we'll get King Kong later this season? It very well could be the case, since this is the Monsterverse version of Godzilla we're getting in Fortnite, so his hairy buddy makes just as much sense. For everything on the Fortnite battle pass in Chapter 6, Season 1, here's an in-depth look at all the new heroes and villains you'll collect over the next few months. All Skins And Character NamesFirst, let's look at the official version of some art work that leaked earlier last week. With this, we can easily identify all the characters and their names using official sources. From left in the image above:Godzilla (needs no introduction)Kendo (in the red jacket)Daigo (in the white mask)Shadow Blade Hope (in front with the blue hair)The Night Rose (above Hope holding the red fans)Beymax (the red robot in the back)Nyanja (the cat down in front)Jade (in the jade-colored jacket, of course)For more previews of the new skins before downtime ends and we can capture the full battle pass, keep scrolling!
