Investigators say a Chinese ships crew deliberately dragged its anchor to cut undersea data cables
European investigators believe a Chinese-owned commercial ship deliberately dragged its anchor to sabotage the two undersea telecommunications cables cut in the Baltic Sea earlier this month. However, Western law enforcement and intelligence officials told The Wall Street Journal that they dont believe the Chinese government was involved. Instead, the probe is focused on whether Russian intelligence persuaded the vessels captain to carry out the operation. For the past week, NATO warships from Denmark, Germany and Sweden have surrounded the 225-meter-long Yi Peng 3. The ships Chinese owner, Ningbo Yipeng Shipping, is reportedly cooperating with investigators. The shipper allowed the commercial vessel to be stopped in international waters. The WSJ says Swedish and German authorities are negotiating with the owner to access the ship and its crew. International maritime laws prevent NATO from forcing the vessel to sail into one of their ports.European investigators believe the Yi Peng 3 dragged its anchor for over 100 miles along the Baltic seabed from November 17 to 18. They reportedly viewed satellite and other data showing that the vessel moved significantly slower than usual while weighed down by the anchor. It severed two data cables: one connecting Lithuania and Sweden and another between Finland and Germany. After cutting the second cable, the ship reportedly zig-zagged, raised anchor, and continued.Officials said the ships transponder was shut down during the incident. Investigators told theWSJ that their review of the anchor and hull showed damage consistent with dragging and cutting the cable. Its extremely unlikely that the captain would not have noticed that his ship dropped and dragged its anchor, losing speed for hours and cutting cables on the way, a senior European investigator told the WSJ. An analytics company specializing in international shipping told the paper that the likelihood of accidental anchor dragging appears minimal. The Yi Peng 3 sailed solely in Chinese waters from December 2019 to early March 2024. At that point, it suddenly began carrying Russian coal and other goods and began stopping in Russian ports. When the Danish Navy stopped it, it was carrying Russian fertilizer. In September, the US issued a warning about a heightened risk of Russian interference with undersea data cables.

Path of Exile 2's early access system is raising some eyebrows, but it could actually be a great way of rewarding loyal gamers
Paid OffPath of Exile 2's early access system is raising some eyebrows, but it could actually be a great way of rewarding loyal gamersAll that money you may or may not have sunk into the original Path of Exile is paying off now, right? Right?!Image credit: VG247 Article by Sherif Saed Contributing Editor Published on Nov. 27, 2024 Even if you never actually played Path of Exile, youve likely heard about its comically gigantic passive skill tree. But a sentiment youve probably also heard repeatedly from the people who play it is that its one of the rare free-to-play games that does not prey on its users.Path of Exile is often cited as an example of how free-to-play can be done fairly; offering gameplay options and cosmetics for real money, without taking away from the core experience or comprising it in any (major) way.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Knowing all of that, however, doesnt stop one from raising an eyebrow looking at those Path of Exile 2 supporter pack prices. They start off at a reasonable $30, but go all the way up to an eye-watering $480! Yes, some editions do also include physical items, but even if you take those out, the remainder still cost well over what your more standard free-to-play games typically ask of their players. Would you pay more to be a more powerful warrior? | Image credit: Grinding Gear GamesThe value of these bundles is entirely determined by Grinding Gear Games, of course, and the developer wouldnt price them that way if it didnt know the packages were going to sell. In fact, the developer has spent years refining its monetisation strategy with the original Path of Exile, and some of that game's bundles are similarly expensive, so there is certainly an audience for it.One thing most people may not have picked up on, however, is that GGG is also rewarding existing players for their investments. Anyone who spent $480, or more, on Path of Exile microtransactions will receive an early access key for the sequel. Now, yes, that is not a small figure, but considering the game has been out for a decade - that's 10 whole years! - many longtime players have likely invested close to that already. Without even realising it, in many cases. That's only about $48 per year, when you break it down, or a measly $4 per month -- not that much cash, in the grand scheme of things. It may not look like the most compelling offer at first glance, but its still a bonus that recognises the money a certain segment of the player base has already invested into the game. The original Path of Exile is not going away, so those players can continue enjoying the purchases theyve accumulated for years, but they also have a reason to jump into the new game without an upfront investment. It's both rewarding for sticky players, and opens up a new avenue for player retention for GGG. Everyone wins? Have Mercenary! | Image credit: Grinding Gear GamesUltimately, this is a good business decision on GGGs part, but it also helps perpetuate the studios reputation of running a fair free-to-play model. Looking into the studios decisions around Path of Exile monetisation over the years, youll come across many instances where your first thought would be they didnt have to do this, which I think is exactly where GGG wants to be.Let that be a lesson to a lot of the developers that seem to be chasing profits first, ahead of their players.

The lastest trailer for Squid Game season 2 shows some familiar and fresh games, new faces, and, you guessed it, a whole lot of killing
Game OnThe lastest trailer for Squid Game season 2 shows some familiar and fresh games, new faces, and, you guessed it, a whole lot of killingWho could have guessed!Image credit: Netflix News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Nov. 27, 2024 Netflix has offered up another look at the upcoming second season of Squid Game, and while some things look familiar, plenty of it looks different too. We're pretty much exactly a month away from Squid Game season 2 now, and Netflix has released a new trailer that actually gives us a look at the games that the show's fictitious participants can, uh, look forward to, for lack of a better phrase. Arguably the most iconic game from the first season, that one with the creepy giant robot girl where you have to run while she's not looking otherwise you get shot, is back in action, with protagonist Seong Gi-hun leading the new players through it (or attempting to, anyway). Watch on YouTubeThere have been some changes too, most notably some games that seem to have divided players up amongst an X and an O symbol. Surely that won't be a comment on how the rich pit the working class against each other! One game also seems to involve a merry-go-round, but for the most part it just seems like Gi-hun is trying to lead everyone towards a revolution of sorts to end the games. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Netflix describes the second season in an official synopsis: "Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) returns, locked in a tense battle with the shadowy Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). As new games unfold, the stakes grow deadlier, and Gi-huns mission to end the games once and for all takes center stage. Will he succeed, or will the system claim even more victims?" Lee is one of the few returning cast members, unsurprisingly, with a whole bunch of fresh meat for the grinder joining him, including a cocky purple-haired youngster, and a mother and son duo - who wants to place bets on whether they end up on opposite sides of the X and O teams? You don't have long to wait for season 2 now, as it's set to arrive on Netflix this coming December 26.

HongShan, spun out of Sequoia last year, is reportedly struggling to invest its huge war chest
In BriefPosted:9:16 PM PST November 27, 2024HongShan, spun out of Sequoia last year, is reportedly struggling to invest its huge war chestAccording to the Financial Times, HongShan, the Chinese investment firm spun off from Sequoia Capital in 2023, is aggressively expanding into Europe and North Asia owing both to shrinking options in China and to limited partners that have grown frustrated with how slowly HongShan is deploying the $9 billion in capital commitments it secured two years ago. (As the FT notes, LPs typically have to pay management fees on capital even if it has not been called into use.)Based in Hong Kong, the nearly 20-year-old firm has taken a bigger bite of existing Chinese portfolio companies like TikToks parent company ByteDance and an Instagram clone called Xiaohongshu. Its also investing in China-based robotics and AI startups.Still, a range of new bets in new regions, along with reported plans to open an office in Tokyo, suggest HongShan is looking farther afield for returns. Indeed, having recently opened an office in London, it may increasingly bump into its former partner, Sequoia, which also now has a London office, observes the FT.Topics

Improved Windform Composites with CRPs latest vapor smoothing process
Italy-based 3D printing company CRP Technology has introduced vapor smoothing into its production processes, delivering enhanced surface quality and mechanical properties of 3D printed parts created using Windform composites. This post-processing solution seals micro-porosities in Windform composites, enhancing both surface resilience and quality to meet the stringent standards of industries such as aerospace, automotive, and motorsport. As per CRP Technology, Vapor smoothing offers a surface finish comparable to plastic injection molding, delivering flexibility in its application. It can be applied directly to Windform parts or paired with manual finishing techniques to achieve a flawless surface.Combining the two often eliminates the need for painting, reducing both costs and weight while preserving exceptional aesthetic and functional quality. As a stand-alone service, vapor smoothing is also available for existing Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) and Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) parts, with notable enhancements for black-colored components. We integrated this service to elevate the parts we produce in Windform while preserving the mechanical excellence for which these materials are known, says Franco Cevolini, CEO and CTO of CRP Technology. For applications requiring aesthetics, durability, and weight efficiency, vapor smoothing provides a distinct advantage on parts that are already world-class, thanks to Windform. In contrast, some 3D printing service providers use vapor smoothing simply to make lower-grade parts more acceptable.Enhanced parts with CRPs vapor smoothing.
