  • Fortnites Godzilla Collab Absolutely Gets the Awe of Giant Monsters
    gizmodo.com
At this point, its probably more realistic to lay out what franchises and brands Fortnite hasnt crossed over with. Epics Battle Royale shooter is a melting pot of licensed absurdity, where Luke Skywalker and Hatsune Miku and perform an array of memetic dances on the virtual corpses of everyone from Goku to Ariana Grande. The homogenized ur-brand of it all makes it hard for the latest in a long line of announced crossovers to stand out at this point, but its latest with the world of Legendarys Monsterverse is definitely a cut above the rest and not just because it involves monsters taller than most things on Fortnites island map. Late last week Epic and Legendary kicked off a big new collaboration as part of Fortnites latest season, bringing skins inspired byGodzilla vs. Kong and The New Empire to the shooter. But beyond that Godzilla (himself a bit of a crossover queen, as of late) now has a physical presence on Fortnites map. Randomly at some point in a game, a massive portal can pop up somewhere on the island, and the first player to run through is transformed into Godzilla to lay waste to their foes. If youre not Godzilla, you can ping bullet after bullet at the kaiju to try and deplete his healthbar, getting rewards if you end up doing the most damage. If youare Godzilla, you get to spend as much time as youve got slowly but surely stomping, heat-beaming, and skree-onking your way through the map, leaving a trail of smashed buildings and dead players in your wake. Whats genuinely impressive about it all is that being on either end of this apocalyptic scenario is fun as hell. Godzilla is unwieldy and slow, but in a way that emphasizes the strength and scale youre playing with, and the sheer carnage he can enact tearing through scenery or by melting players with blasts of his breath walks the fine line between feeling powerful enough to be threatening, but not so overwhelming as to be impossible to fight back against. But its when youre on the ground that is the most fun, arguably: whether youre miles away from Godzilla or perilously close to his ample stomping feet, Fortnite has absolutely nailed the feeling of scale youd want out of such an encounter. The look is on point (well, in terms of replicating Legendarys version of Big G), the sound design is on point, but its definitely the size and scope, almost unlike anything elseFortnite has done in years, that makes Godzilla feel so special. You can see him almost across the map, as tall as some of the highest mountains on the island. Your screen judders as he moves closer, or when a neon-pink jolt of energy screeches past you. Regardless of which version ofFortnites battle royale youre in theres a certain level of destructibility thats part of the games dynamic, and Godzilla changes that entirely, capable of taking down whole buildings worth of cover in a blast. And again, as chaotic as it can be, there feels like a fairness to it all: the beams are potent, but slow enough that you can dramatically try to outrun the path they burn across the ground. Getting stomped by Godzilla is less about immediately squelching you and more about the displacement of it, sending you and anyone else nearby flying back, all the better to bask in the scale of it. It doesnt feelunfair to go up against Godzilla, but he likewise doesnt feel like a pushover as people vie to do the most damage to him, weaving yourself between their gunfire and Godzillas own irradiated bolts of heat ray in equal measure. Fortnites Godzilla has a sense of weight to him that jars with a lot of the breezy movement that otherwise defines the shooter (especially this season, which has re-implemented a lot more movement mechanics to make players feel brisker and capable of smoother traversal). Hes disruptive in the best sense: he might only be around for a few minutes in a match, if he has the chance to appear at all, but regardless of where you are, when hedoes show up, he commands attention. And what else should the King of All Monsters do, but demand that by his mere presence? Want more io9 news? • Picture of a Duck Accidentally Sent to Stripe Workers Being Laid Off
    gizmodo.com
By Thomas Maxwell Published January 21, 2025 | Comments (4) | Stripe accidentally sent a picture of a duck to employees being laid off. Jyoti Mann/Business Insider Stripe is laying off approximately 300 people this week, and the payment technology company seems to have made a royal gaffe in executing the firings. Business Insider reports that employees affected by layoffs received a PDF image of a duck in their emails, as well as a termination date that was not correct. A spokesperson for Stripe confirmed the flub to Business Insider and said a follow-up email corrected the error. Stripe says it still plans to grow its headcount this year to reach 10,000. On Blind, a discussion board where employees of the tech industry can speak anonymously, Stripe staffers joked somebody should quickly make a custom duck emoji in the companys Slack. The tech industry has undergone unprecedented layoffs in recent years after nearly two decades of growth, and the mass firingsnecessitated by extreme over-hiring during the pandemichave not always been implemented smoothly. One common occurrence is employees waking up to find their work devices simply will not turn on, or they arrive at the office and try to badge in, only to see their access key does not work. Incorrect information is sometimes delivered to impacted employees, or layoff emails are sent to work accounts just as employees are cut off from accessing them. Better.coms CEO received intense heat and took a leave of absence after he laid off 900 people over Zoom, a call during which he accused the affected employees of stealing by not working hard enough. The CEO of PagerDuty quoted Martin Luther King Jr. in her email laying off staff.Overall, the power has shifted back from tech workers to employers since a string of mass layoffs began in late 2022. No longer can employees protest their companies signing up contracts with the Pentagon, or fight for DEI and other initiatives. For all but the very best, the job market in tech is not that great anymore, and the leaderships disregard for employees concerns is evident. Stripe CEO Patrick Collison took tremendous heat in late 2024 over a post he shared on X of him on a run in Tel Aviv, saying it was great to be back. Ireland, where Collison is from and Stripe maintains offices, has been a vocal critic of Israel throughout its war on Gaza. His company remains strong, with Stripe garnering a valuation reportedly over $70 billion.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Matthew Gault Published January 21, 2025 By AJ Dellinger Published December 26, 2024 By Matthew Gault Published December 21, 2024 By Matthew Gault Published November 14, 2024 Earther Exxon Pays Off Shareholders, Lays Off Workers By Brian Kahn Published October 29, 2020 EartherClimate Change Exxon Is Reportedly Eyeing Layoffs By Brian Kahn Published September 1, 2020

  • Ryan Gosling Could Star in Shawn Levys Star Wars Movie
    gizmodo.com
The future ofStar Wars movies is always in an uncertain level of motion, but one of the most mysterious projects among themany mysterious projects Lucasfilm has cooking at the moment might have just taken a major step forward. The Hollywood Reporter reportsand io9 has confirmedthat Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levys mysteryStar Wars film is currently in negotiations with Ryan Gosling for a major starring role. Little else is known about Levys project, which was first unveiled in 2022one of just a handful of recently announced Star Wars theatrical projects that has managed to make it through the last few years of scrapping and reshuffling largely unscathed so far. The filmwhich Levy last gave an update on in 2023, saying that plans for a script had been waylaid by the then-current Hollywood strikeshas not been given any specific setting within the Star Wars timeline, but the Hollywood Reporter further added that the film is indeed a standalone entity, and unconnected to the broad narrative of the main series of Skywalker Saga films, which would fit into what weve heard about Lucasfilms most recent movie slate plans, aligning around a new saga of three films currently being planned by producer and writer Simon Kinberg. THR further adds that should Gosling sign on to appear in the film, Lucasfilms planned slate after release of the firstStar Wars theatrical project since 2019, next yearsThe Mandalorian & Grogu, could shift once more. Levy had previously planned on directing other projects before focusing on the galaxy far, far away, including an upcoming boy band film at Paramount that would reunite him with hisDeadpool & Wolverine colleagues Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. However, should talks with Gosling go well, theStar Wars project will become Levys next filmand the next Star Wars film in Lucasfilms vast slate to actually enter production, with production potentially starting this coming fall. • Severance Season 2s Disorienting Opening Scene Took Months to Create
    gizmodo.com
Severance is back, and though season two is just one episode in, fans are already formulating theories about whats really going on as Apple TV+s sci-fi thriller enters its next chapter. Well have to be patient as the puzzle pieces drop in the weekly release, but the season premieres opening scene sets up the breathless, disorienting path that the charactersespecially Adam Scotts Mark S.will be traveling as they seek to unravel the mysteries behind Lumon Industries. In a new video from Vanity Fair, executive producer Ben Stiller, who also directed season premiere Hello, Ms. Cobel, and star Scott go behind the scenes of that frantic sequence. It took four to five months to complete and involved more special effects and logistical maneuvering than Severance usually requires. As the pair explains, Mark takes off running as soon as he steps off the elevatorback in his innie mindspace for the first time since realizing his Lumon co-worker Ms. Casey is actually Gemma, the wife his outie believes was killed in a car crashbecause his first impulse is to find Ms. Casey and share this incredible discovery with her. But the route to the wellness room proves far more of a journey than the viewer has ever realized. Lumons severed floor feels like a miles-long maze of stark white corridors and right-angle turns. While Marks so confident he knows the way hes able to sprint there, capturing his mad dash was far more technically challenging than simply following Scott around with a Steadicam. It involved a bulky piece of camera equipment called a bolt arm, as well as a patchwork of shots of the hallway set whenever it was set up to support the sequenceand a treadmill for Scott in certain places. We dont like to use visual effects too much in the show in terms of creating backgrounds and environments, Stiller says. But we needed to for this shot because of the bolt arm taking up all the space. The video goes on to explain why Stiller didnt use a Steadicam (it would have been too cumbersome for the operator to use while keeping up with Marks escalating pace), as well as how Scott knew whenever hed be filming a portion of the high-intensity scene when he was asked which flavor of Gatorade he preferred. We always felt that we really wanted to kick off the season in a way that would be exciting and fun, and kind of give an indication of where we were going for season two, Stiller says. [The shot] felt like, All right, were gonna indicate to the audience that this is some new stuff happening. Oh, and that dude who pops up behind Mark once he reaches the former wellness room? Scott and Stiller point him out in the video, but dont reveal anything more about his identity. Add that to your ever-growing list of theories! New episodes of Severance arrive Fridays on Apple TV+. • Apple Deadnamed the Gulf of America and Conservatives Are Triggered
    gizmodo.com
Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) is upset that Apple Maps still calls the Gulf of America the Gulf of Mexico. So upset that he tagged Apple CEO Tim Cook on X and said hed filed a complaint. Hey @tim_cook, just noticed Apple Maps still calls it the Gulf of Mexico. Sent a report through the app, but thought youd want to know! said the former Navy Seal. It seems that Crenshaw is upset, triggered if you will, that Big Tech isnt changing as fast as hed like it to. Hes so upset that he did a cringe post in the style of a suburbanite upset at Target. Crenshaws whining typifies a behavior Ive seen in right-wing pundits and politicians in the last few years, the rise of a kind of post and style once attributed to the left in online spaces. Crenshaw is posting cringe and doubling down on the culture war. Theyre obsessed with identity politics, attempting to cancel their enemies, policing gender norms, and demanding that the culture bend to their whims despite the culture not being interested. This is all the stuff theyve long accused the left of doing. Less than 24 hours ago, as of this writing, Trump signed an executive order titled Restoring Names that Honor American Greatness. Along with a host of other changes, the order said that the U.S. would henceforth call the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. Google and Apple havent updated the name. These things take time. But just because Trump says the name is different doesnt make it so. Its a body of water thats not exclusively used by the U.S. and Mexico, and the rest of the world will still call it the Gulf of Mexico. A lot of people who dont live in the U.S. use Google and Apple Maps and its a good bet that the name wont change for them. Wikipedia also hasnt changed the name on its entry for the Gulf. Even if it was official, America does not get to own Wikipedia entries. [It] stays the Gulf of Mexico as the rest of the world calls it, said an unnamed Wikipedia editor in the editing history of the page. This is a modern version of the Freedom fries jingoism, having nothing to do with geography and everything to do with politics, another Wikipedia editor said, referring to a post-9/11 attempt by conservatives to rename french fries. We have the same sort of thing as a perennial complaint with British Isles from a series of Irish editors. This nothing new or special, and can be documented on its own and with simple passing mention in the article if and when it becomes more than a sound bite at a news conference. But Conservatives like Crenshaw will publicly make the demand, posting cringe and embarrassing themselves. Ignoble in victory, they now exhibit the traits theyve long accused their opponents of having. The American right has control over the Supreme Court, the presidency, and the legislature. That kind of total political victory isnt enough. They want you to like them too. They want you to laugh at their jokes, take their memes seriously, and call the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. The pinned post on Crenshaws X account is a Conservative Guide to the Culture Wars from 2021. The second item on the list is the claim that a victor mentality is better than a victim mentality. Over the next four years, I suspect well see a lot more cringe posts from Crenshaw and others as the victors twist themselves into victims when every little thing doesnt go their way. Or when it doesnt go their way quite as fast as theyd want.

  • Being a Manga Letterer Is More Than Having a Fun Job
    gizmodo.com
When people read manga, they often focus on the Instagram caption-worthy one-liners and larger-than-life illustrations that fill their pages. What usually goes unnoticed in picking up a manga is the work that goes into its lettering and graphic design, done by the folks who pour their craftsmanship into typesetting popular Japanese manga for Western audiences. We spoke with professional letterers Brandon Bovia (The Guy She Was Interested in Wasnt a Guy at All, Dragon Ball Super, Kaiju No. 8), Evan Hayden (Battle Angel Alita, Land of Lustrous, Akira), Sara Linsley (Kamudo), Aidan Clarke (Otaku Elf, Neo Faust, Les Miserable), Barri Shrager (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?), Kyla Aiko (Dandadan, Gokurakugai), and Finn K. (Shinobi Undercover, RuriDragon) about the challenges of typesetting the best manga in the world. Manga Lettering in a Nutshell The job of a manga letterer is a collaborative process between publishers and translators where typesetters bring together all the minutiae of text folks would read in a mangaeven if it means designing fonts themselves. If you look at a page of manga, virtually all the text you can read in English was placed there by a letterer. Letterers are localizing everything from restaurant signs to handwritten love letters. If the reader is meant to read it, then the letterer has to localize it. The kinds of things we have to localize vary from genre to genre, Linsley said. Lettering is an art, and sloppy lettering can ruin a localization. Sara Linsley Sara Linsleys lettering for Pupposites Attract by Hono Natsuna Kodansha Using programs like InDesign, PhotoShop, and Acrobat, letterers localize the typography of a manga for Western readers. Depending on the publisher, a letterers graphic design and typography job description may also include working on the manga covers, table of contents, and other pieces of iconography beyond setting dialogue in speech bubbles and translating onomatopoeia sound effects. Furthermore, letters are also tasked with stylizing the font in the manga. Although this process sounds like it could be straightforwardswapping out Japanese with Englishthe lettering process is actually a complex amalgamation of art and science.Theres a misconception that fan translation is the same as professional translation, and those experiences are used to make assumptions about the manga industry. For example, some folks believe that the same person will translate and letter a page, when thats very rare in the professional sphere. Some folks assume that lettering is easy, or that its just copying and pasting text from the translated script. Lettering is an art, and sloppy lettering can ruin a localization, Linsley said. Another element of manga lettering that differentiates itself from lettering in Western comic books is that workers must adapt every word in manga art to English. In laymans terms, manga letterers must erase handwritten Japanese text elements and replace them with English text elements. This extends beyond dialogue in speech bubbles to translating signsbe they on the road, or in apps and text on smartphones (which can be super tricky)and flamboyant sound effects.Brandon Bovias lettering for The Hunters Guild: Red Hood by Yuki Kawaguchi. Shonen Jump Even if the original manga page was created digitally and the sound effects are on a separate layer from the character and background art, those layered files are seldom available to companies that want to localize the manga. The act of erasing and redrawing manga art is often referred to as retouching, and manga letterers are sometimes credited as having done lettering and touch-up art,' Aiko said. As the letterer of Yen Press popular girls love manga, The Guy She Was Interested in Wasnt a Guy at All, Bovia can attest to the challenging aspect of retouching a manga whose identity is tied to the green layer associated with the identity of its busy panels. If something needed to be retouched, it needed to be retouched twiceboth in black and white and green. Then add the green back into the new English text, Bovia said. The final result ended up being a lot of fun, but that one really pushed me to my limit. And I was juggling eight other books at the same time.Brandon Bovias lettering for The Guy She Was Interested in Wasnt a Guy at All by Sumika Arai Yen Press On the opposite end of the spectrum, Hayden goes the extra mile by hand-drawing his work using a bounty of ink pens on paper, especially if hes working on an older manga. If Im working on a classic manga, I really want to make things look as not digital as possible. I try to avoid using fonts for my sound effects. On Ashita no Joe, Im doing all the sound effects by hand and ink, which takes a long time, but thats how the original artist did it, Hayden said. A modern manga looks fine with modern fonts, but an older one doesnt. Thats personal preference.Ink-drawn manga lettering for Ashita no Joe. Evan Hayden While publishers have streamlined some of the day-to-day lettering processes by using Wild Words as their default font, there are areas of specificity between publishers. For example, manga publisher Seven Seas requires letterers to use 100% auto leading, whereas Yen Press instructs them to use font size plus one for leading. That results in very different-looking implementations of the same font between those publishers, Clarke said. Adding font standards in the mix with other overarching graphic design faux pas and no-noslike the ongoing debate over the implementation of the dreaded cross Is use-case in manga, wrapping of text, over-hyphenated words, and other niggling graphic design annoyancescan go unnoticed by the everyday reader but stick out like a sore thumb to a letterer. Some folks assume that lettering is easy, or that its just copying and pasting text from the translated script. Lettering is an art, and sloppy lettering can ruin a localization, Shrager said. Barri Shragers lettering for Meda-Ude: Mechanical Arms by Yoshino Koyoka. Azuki Manga Getting work consistently hasnt been an issue. Getting paid in a timely manner has been. Finn K. Pay, Work, and Life Balance While being a manga letterer might sound like a fun gig anyone would be lucky to have, much like with any job, balancing work, pay, and safeguarding ones personal life can be a tumultuous balancing act. For starters, a weekly 19 or 20-page series can pay a letterer $4-20 per page depending on the publisher and scope of the work. A monthly volume can take 30-50 hours on the light end, and 70-100 hours on the heavier end to complete within a months deadline. Depending on how demanding the project is, monthly pay can wildly vary, with rates at $1,000 (or lower) to $2,000 (again, depending on the project). Mind you, some of these rates havent changed much since 2013 for letterers. I feel like if I had a few more series that paid well enough, I would make this a full-time job with a very small yearly salary (were talking $40-60,000 max). But currently I do other side hustles to earn [more] money. Workload-wise you can easily spend more than a typical 40 hours a week and not be making nearly the same as someone working an office job, Shrager said. I would even say that $1000 these daysthings are expensivedoesnt take you as far as it used to when I started [in 2017], Bovia said.Barri Shragers lettering for My Dear Detective Mitsukos Case Files by Natsumi Ito. Azuki Manga Requesting time extensions from a publisher isnt like pulling teeth because most production schedules have a built-in cushion for emergencies. However, even this security blanket has an element of a double-edged sword. As a freelancer, you dont want to ask for extensions too often. If youre consistently behind on your work, clients can and will drop you from their projects, Linsley said.In addition to managing their time on a manga project, letterers must consider the amount of work they are taking on from publishers and meet deadlines, as no letterer works on only one manga at a time. If you really want to do your best for something, then you got to put in some incredibly long hours. Whether that means youre lettering a manga or whether it means youre making the next Grand Theft Auto game. People have to work crushing hours to make that happen, Hayden said. And if youre a freelancer, youre getting whatever youre getting, whether you do it quick or slow. You have to force yourself to try to work fast, which sometimes can lead to lower quality, which doesnt make you feel very good.Sara Linsleys lettering for Kamudo by Akira Himekawa. Viz Manga Despite putting in what is akin to full-time hours, most letterers are contract workers laboring on multiple manga chapters and books simultaneously to make ends meet. At the same time, some letterers jerry-rig their workflow so that theyre ostensibly working a full-time job lettering. Rather than feeling like the industry, which has had its systems in place for 20 to 30 years, is making strides to be equitable for letterers, most feel like theyre taking strides in the opposite direction. While it might seem like big-money manga titles would be able to provide full-time pay for letterers, the only company that hires full-time in the United States is porn. Fakku, the largest English hentai manga and doujinshi publisher, is one of the only places that hires letterers full-time. The manga industry is notorious for contractor-only work; its pretty cutthroat. Right from when we started publishing manga 10 years ago, I had a goal to improve the industry and make this a real career for people, Fakku founder Jacob Grady told io9. He continued: All of our typesetters are full-time salaried employees, with health insurance/vision/dental all 100% paid by the company with a 401k retirement plan. The goal is really to make this a long-term career for people, and provide job stability for our employees. While there will certainly never be any shortage of readers wanting to read manga for the plot, most manga letterers are contract workers or freelancers who try to make ends meet by supplementing their income with a second job. Its a really hard thing to make ends meet with. I know a number of people who have that as their full-time job, and there are only a select few of them that I dont see getting actively crushed by it, Clarke said. Ive been able to make it work, but if just a few things were to change in my life, it would be more difficult. Kyla Aiko Freelance letterers can face instances where invoices arent paid out promptly or piecemeal, making the work process all the more challenging. Manga lettering is my main source of income, and while what Im paid works for me most the time, its not my only source. I have a part-time job that Ive held the entire length of my lettering career. Part of the reason is because, while getting work consistently hasnt been an issue, getting paid in a timely manner has been and thats a little stressful even if the moneys good for me, Finn K. said.He continued: On average, it takes three weeks for an invoice to come through for me; sometimes I wait a month. The longest Ive had to wait was a little over two months, and that was hard. While the pay at bigger publishers is more rewarding for most letterers, getting paid in unpredictable timeframes makes the cycle of finding more work and paying bills a stressful ordeal, to say the least. Despite this, letterers balance their workload by typesetting manga monthly or weekly. Sara Linsleys lettering for Dandadan by Yukinobu Tatsu. Shonen Jump If a publisher wants to know how to produce manga faster and cheaper, ask your employees, not an AI startup. Sara Linsley AI Is Not a Solution As the use of AI spreads in nearly every arena of entertainment, tech startups like Orange, Inc. have become pervasive in the manga industry. While companies of this ilk promote their services as a solution to get more under-appreciated manga localized to people in a timely fashion, letterers feel they are no more than a grift. In opposition to publishers eyeing up AI start-ups as a means to maximize production, letterers feel publishers should open up lines of communication with their employees (i.e., letterers) and ask them for solutions the industry is facing. People are interested in comics because they are a form of art. Theyre not just content. They are something that people have put a lot of thought, care, and effort into creating, Clarke said. Not trying to match that passion and effort in the presentation is disrespectful to the people who created these comics in the first place. Automation is a very useful tool that individuals can use within their workflows, but consigning so much of that creative process over to automated methods robs it of that spark.Despite the encroachment of AI, the manga industry faces other persistent issues. As mentioned earlier, low rates are a big one, making the role of a letterer both mentally and physically taxing for workers. Rates are fairly stagnant. Ive seen companies make efforts to raise rates, but its been a slow process. As new companies enter the manga localization market, sometimes it seems like rates are at a race to the bottom, Aiko said. It would be great to see manga lettering rates catch up to even the low end of Western comic lettering rates. Linsley added, The pay is so low that letterers have to overload themselves. I had to stop lettering as my main source of income because I was working 70-hour weeks just to make an average income with no benefits. In tandem with low rates, letters feel like the industrys structure, which relies on contract work from typesetters, prevents years of knowledge to get passed on to letterers in a mentorship capacity outside of folks hitting colleagues up on social media.Over my years of lettering manga, I think, because there isnt any sort of mentorship, you have a new letterer starting from scratch. That doesnt have to be the case. There can be systems in place to ensure people can do this long term as a career, Bovia said. Barri Shragers lettering for Hikaru in the Light! by Mai Matsuda. Azuki Manga Publishers Should Invest in Workers Rather than waiting for solutions to manifest, letterers propose ways the industry can improve and prevent the above challenges from persisting, starting with investing in workers. Letterers we spoke to proposed publishers consult with them for solutions, more open calls for letterers, keeping lines of communication open between contractors and in-house employees, allowing freelancers to negotiate wages, and raising wages to match the modern cost of living. There are publishers out there thatll [hire you] for $600, $500, $400, which is really not much money for your time. If youre just starting out, its really tempting to take those low rates if youre not being offered anything else, Bovia said. Because theres no career path here, its just down to luck and being in the right place at the right time. That doesnt feel like the best way to run things to me. While much of the above can deter any bright-eyed hopeful looking to dip their toes into the profession, every letterer we spoke to encouraged folks to make time for their hobbies and not sacrifice their precious time (and weekends) for endless work.Youve got to do what youve got to do to pay the bills, but you also have to respect yourself as a human being, an artist, and a citizen to get enough money to live a life, Hayden said. • Elon Musk Admits to Paying People to Play Video Games for Him
    gizmodo.com
According to one of Elon Musks gamer buddies, the controversy surrounding Musks use of boosted characters in Diablo IV and Path of Exile 2 is a big misunderstanding. In a DM exchange on X, Musk told streamer NikoWrex that he did, indeed, pay people to play video games for him. According to Musk, everyone at the highest level is doing it so its fine. At the same time he was preparing to sit at the right hand of President Donald Trump, the worlds richest man was beefing with people online about video games. At the beginning of the year, Musk did a livestream of his Path of Exile 2 character on X. It was weird. According to high-level players with a lot of knowledge of the game, Musk didnt seem to know what he was doing. And his account had tell-tale signs of a guy whod paid to have someone else level it. The gamers called him out and Musk began to publicly fight the allegations. At one point Grimes, the mother of three of his children, even took to X to defend Musks gaming honor. https://x.com/Grimezsz/status/1880685503009443921 Two days ago, NikoWrex posted a YouTube video that he said cleared the whole thing up. Musk wont respond to questions from The Wall Street Journal about his gaming habits but he will, apparently, answer a DM from a gaming buddy on X. With Musks permission, NikoWrex posted the transcript of a conversation hed had with the billionaire on X where he asked him about the controversy outright. Have you level boosted (had someone had someone else play your accounts) and/or purchased gear/ resources for PoE 2 and Diablo 4? NikoWrex asked.Musk responded with a 100 percent emoji. But when I post a video of a game or am streaming, thats 100% me, Musk clarified. Its impossible to beat the players in Asia if you dont, as they do! Musk styles himself as a master gamer, its a big part of his personality and personal brand. The use of boosted characters in games like Diablo and PoE 2 isnt unheard of, but it is controversial. Getting a character to max level can be a grueling task that takes hundreds of hours and gamers have long questioned how it was that Musk was able to get characters up that high while hanging out with Trump and helming multiple companies. NikoWrex asked if Musk intended to take credit for leveling a character to max. No, Musk said. Never claimed that. The top accounts in Diablo or PoE require multiple people playing the account to win the leveling race. Musk is admitting the central claim of the gaming communitys critiques against him: He isnt leveling the accounts himself. Its weird. He could have, if he wanted to, diffused a lot of the drama by just stating this clearly upfront. Instead, he chose to beef with prominent gaming streamers like Asmongold when they called him out.NikoWrex asked about the fight with Asmongold. • First-Ever Documented Supersonic Winds Are Ripping Through This Exoplanet
    gizmodo.com
By Passant Rabie Published January 21, 2025 | Comments (0) | Artists Impression Of Supersonic Winds On Wasp 127b ESO/L. Calada The farthest planet from the Sun, Neptune, is the windiest place in the solar system, with winds that whip through at speeds reaching more than 0.3 miles per second (0.5 kilometers per second). Thats a relatively pleasant wind speed compared to a giant, puffy planet located around 500 lightyears away from Earth. Supersonic winds on this exoplanet, designated WASP-127b, travel at a mind-bending 5.5 miles per second (9 kilometers per second). The speed of sound on Earth is roughly 0.21 miles per second (0.34 km/sec), making these winds supersonic by our terrestrial standards. The recently discovered extraterrestrial jet stream is the fastest ever measured on a planet, providing new insight into extreme weather that pummel other worlds. Using European Southern Observatorys (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile, a team of astronomers measured the extremely powerful winds that are raging on the equator of WASP-127b. At speeds of up to 20,500 miles per hour (33,000 kilometers per hour), the jet winds move at nearly six times the speed at which the planet rotates, according to a study published today in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics. An animated visual of the exoplanet reveals a gnarly scene as the winds pummel the equator of WASP-127b with extreme ferocity. Part of the atmosphere of this planet is moving towards us at a high velocity while another part is moving away from us at the same speed, Lisa Nortmann, a scientist at the University of Gttingen, Germany, and lead author of the study, said in a statement. This signal shows us that there is a very fast, supersonic, jet wind around the planets equator.Astronomers discovered the exoplanet in 2016, a gas giant thats slightly larger than Jupiter with a fraction of its mass, making it rather puffy. WASP-127b takes a little over four days to orbit around its star, a yellow dwarf, or G-type star, which are typically less massive and cooler than our Sun. Ever since its discovery, scientists have been probing the planet to learn more about its weather patterns. The team behind the new study used VLT to trace the planets composition by measuring how the light of its host star travels through its upper atmosphere. The results revealed the presence of water vapor and carbon monoxide molecules in the planets atmosphere. The speed at which this material moved through the atmosphere, however, uncovered a rather odd double peak, according to the study, which meant that one side of the atmosphere is moving towards us and the other away from us at high speeds. This is something we havent seen before. Based on their measurements, the researchers concluded that extremely powerful winds dominated the planets equator, appearing to squeeze the gas giant as parts of its atmosphere move in opposite directions. This is something we havent seen before, Nortmann said. As the study also revealed, the planets poles are cooler than the rest of it, and it experiences slightly different temperatures on its morning and evening sides. This shows that the planet has complex weather patterns just like Earth and other planets of our own System, Fei Yan, a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China, and co-author of the study, said in a statement. Scientists are learning more about planets that orbit stars other than our own, analyzing the atmosphere of other worlds with extreme precision as a way to piece together our own origin story. Understanding the dynamics of these exoplanets helps us explore mechanisms such as heat redistribution and chemical processes, improving our understanding of planet formation and potentially shedding light on the origins of our own Solar System, David Cont from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany, and a co-author of the paper, said in a statement. With more than 5,000 exoplanets discovered so far, weve still got a lot of learning to do.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Isaac Schultz Published January 15, 2025 By Isaac Schultz Published January 9, 2025 By Isaac Schultz Published January 8, 2025 By Isaac Schultz Published January 8, 2025 By Isaac Schultz Published January 2, 2025 By Ed Cara Published December 26, 2024

  • Peeing Can Be Contagious for Both People and Chimps
    gizmodo.com
By Ed Cara Published January 21, 2025 | Comments (0) | Chimpanzees at the Kumamoto Sanctuary holding orange slices. Kumamoto Sanctuary It looks like humans arent the only ones who occasionally go the bathroom in groups. A study out this week shows that peeing can sometimes be contagious among chimpanzees, too. Scientists at Kyoto University in Japan led the research, which was published Monday in the journalCurrent Biology. They observed captive chimpanzees living at the Kumamoto Sanctuary for hundreds of hours, noticing that when one chimp decided to pee, others would often follow suit. This phenomenon might be shaped by the social hierarchy of our primate cousins, the researchers say. As is often the case in science, lead researcher Ena Onishis inspiration to conduct this study came unexpectedly. While observing a group of captive chimpanzees as part of a different research project, I noticed a tendency for individuals to urinate at the same time. This resemblance to certain human behaviors piqued my curiosity, Onishi, a doctoral student at the Kyoto University Wildlife Research Center, told Gizmodo. In Japan, there is a specific term called Tsureshon (), which refers to the act of urinating in the company of others. Starting from there, I developed my research question, wondering if this might be one of the contagious phenomena, like contagious yawning or contagious scratching, and decided to investigate whether contagious urination existed. Onishi and her team studied the Kumamoto Sanctuary chimpanzees for more than 600 hours, ultimately documenting 1,328 urination events. They found that the chimps generally tended to pee more often after a fellow chimp had just peed. But there were certain patterns to this contagious urination. For one, a chimp was more likely to pee if they were closer in proximity to the original leaker (the researchers classified three levels of proximity: within arms reach, within 3 meters, and more than 3 meters). But social class also appeared to influence the odds of a chimp peeing after another. [We] found that lower-ranking individuals were more likely to follow others in urinating. This further supports the idea that urination has a contagious and socially influenced component in chimpanzees, Onishi said. By contrast, the researchers found no evidence that a chimps social closeness to another affected their odds of contagious peeing. The findings are based on a small sample size of a single chimp population, so more research will be needed to confirm whether this is a widespread behavior among chimps everywhere, including those in the wild. And at this point, the researchers only have hunches as to why contagious urination might be common to chimps. Its possible that the behavior promotes group cohesion by ensuring that chimps are more likely to have the same shared physiological state, for instance, Onishi said. The act of positively mimicking a fellow chimp might also itself strengthen bonds between them. Or group peeing could have emerged as an anti-predator strategy, since it might reduce the risk of other animals tracking the chimps through dispersed urine odors. Whatever the reason, the researchers have plenty of peeing-related mysteries left to uncover. There are so many things wed like to learn in the future. For instance, we want to observe other chimpanzee groups to explore how social factors like sex, familiarity, and age might influence contagious urination, Onishi said. Were also curious about how this phenomenon plays out in natural settingssuch as whether it serves as preparation for long-distance travel. Since people will sometimes pee together due to their closeness with one another, there do seem to be some inherent differences in the nature of group peeing between humans and chimpanzees, the researchers say. And that raises the question of whether other primates have their own unique version of contagious urinationanother question that the researchers hope they and others can explore.Apes have a wide variety of social structures and dynamics, study researcher Shinya Yamamoto, who is studying the evolution of sociality in humans and other animals at Kyoto University, told Gizmodo. These differences may also influence their decision to urinate and its contagious nature in social contexts, which should be one of the targets of future studies.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Isaac Schultz Published January 7, 2025 By Ed Cara Published January 3, 2025 By Ed Cara Published July 22, 2024 ScienceBiology Some Chimpanzees Have a Bone in Their Heartand Some Humans Might, Too By George Dvorsky Published June 10, 2020 ScienceBiology Zoo Chimps Doing a Conga Line Could Teach Us How Humans Evolved to Dance By Ed Cara Published December 13, 2019 ScienceBiology How Does a Chimpanzee Eat a Tortoise? • AI-Generated Junk Science Is a Big Problem on Google Scholar, Research Suggests
    gizmodo.com
AI-generated scientific research is polluting the online academic information ecosystem, according to a worrying report published in the Harvard Kennedy SchoolsMisinformation Review. A team of researchers investigated the prevalence of research articles with evidence of artificially generated text on Google Scholar,an academic search engine that makes it easy to search for research published historically in a wealth of academic journals. The team specifically interrogated misuse of generative pre-trained transformers (or GPTs), a type of large language model (LLM) that includes now-familiar software such as OpenAIs ChatGPT. These models are able to rapidly interpret text inputs and rapidly generate responses, in the form of figures, images, and long lines of text. In the research, the team analyzed a sample of scientific papers found on Google Scholar with signs of GPT-use. The selected papers contained one or two common phrases that conversational agents (commonly, chatbots) undergirded by LLMs use. The researchers then investigated the extent to which those questionable papers were distributed and hosted across the internet. The risk of what we call evidence hacking increases significantly when AI-generated research is spread in search engines, said Bjrn Ekstrm, a researcher at the Swedish School of Library and Information Science, and co-author of the paper, in a University of Bors release. This can have tangible consequences as incorrect results can seep further into society and possibly also into more and more domains. The way Google Scholar pulls research from around the internet, according to the recent team, does not screen out papers whose authors lack a scientific affiliation or peer-review; the engine will pull academic bycatchstudent papers, reports, preprints, and morealong with the research that has passed a higher bar of scrutiny. The team found that two-thirds of the papers they studied were at least in part produced through undisclosed use of GPTs. Of the GPT-fabricated papers, the researchers found that 14.5% pertained to health, 19.5% pertained to the environment, and 23% pertained to computing. Most of these GPT-fabricated papers were found in non-indexed journals and working papers, but some cases included research published in mainstream scientific journals and conference proceedings, the team wrote. The researchers outlined two main risks brought about by this development. First, the abundance of fabricated studies seeping into all areas of the research infrastructure threatens to overwhelm the scholarly communication system and jeopardize the integrity of the scientific record, the group wrote. A second risk lies in the increased possibility that convincingly scientific-looking content was in fact deceitfully created with AI tools and is also optimized to be retrieved by publicly available academic search engines, particularly Google Scholar. Because Google Scholar is not an academic database, it is easy for the public to use when searching for scientific literature. Thats good. Unfortunately, it is harder for members of the public to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to reputable journals; even the difference between a piece of peer-reviewed research and a working paper can be confusing. Besides, the AI-generated text was found in some peer-reviewed works as well as those less-scrutinized write-ups, indicating that the GPT-fabricated work is muddying the waters throughout the online academic information systemnot just in the work that exists outside of most official channels. If we cannot trust that the research we read is genuine, we risk making decisions based on incorrect information, said study co-author Jutta Haider, also a researcher at the Swedish School of Library and Information Science, in the same release. But as much as this is a question of scientific misconduct, it is a question of media and information literacy. In recent years, publishers have failed to successfully screen a handful of scientific articles that were actually total nonsense. In 2021, Springer Nature was forced to retract over 40 papers in the Arabian Journal of Geosciences, which despite the title of the journal discussed varied topics, including sports, air pollution, and childrens medicine. Besides being off-topic, the articles were poorly writtento the point of not making senseand sentences often lacked a cogent line of thought.Artificial intelligence is exacerbating the issue. Last February, the publisher Frontiers caught flak for publishing a paper in its journal Cell and Developmental Biology that included images generated by the AI software Midjourney; specifically, very anatomically incorrect images of signaling pathways and rat genitalia. Frontiers retracted the paper several days after its publication. AI models can be a boon to science; the systems can decode fragile texts from the Roman Empire, find previously unknown Nazca Lines, and reveal hidden details in dinosaur fossils. But AIs impact can be as positive or negative as the human that wields it. Peer-reviewed journalsand perhaps hosts and search engines for academic writingneed guardrails to ensure that the technology works in service of scientific discovery, not in opposition to it.

  • Elon Musk Appears to Give Nazi Salutes at Trump Rally
    gizmodo.com
By Matt Novak Published January 20, 2025 | Comments (73) | Elon Musk appears to give one of two Nazi salutes on Jan. 20, 2025. Photo by ANGELA WEISS/AFP via Getty Images Elon Musk gave what appeared to be Nazi salutes at a rally held at Capitol One Arena on Monday after the inauguration of Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. And whatever Musks intention with the salutes, Americans on social media are extremely uncomfortable as they debate what it could mean for the future of the country. This one really mattered. And I just want to say thank you for making it happen, Musk said about Trumps re-election to a crowd of supporters. The billionaire placed his right hand to his chest before forcefully extending his arm upward with his fingers fully extended. Musk then turned around and did the salute again to the crowd behind him. After the salutes, Musk told the crowd, My heart goes out to you. It is thanks to you that the future of civilization is assured. News cameras captured the salute from a couple of angles, including one further to Musks right side, which was broadcast online by Reuters. The salute was unmistakably similar to those used by the Nazis in the 1930s and 40s. Mainstream news outlets seemed hesitant to describe the salute as something thats clearly associated with Nazism. As NBC News put it, Musk then forcefully touched his heart, before raising his hand and saluting supporters. The New York Times liveblog failed to mention Musks salute at all, instead noting that he, spoke briefly at the rally at the Capital One Arena and vowed to take DOGE, his cost-cutting effort, to Mars.' The Getty Images photo shows a caption on its website that reads, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk gestures as he speaks during the inaugural parade inside Capitol One Arena, in Washington, DC, on January 20, 2025. The reaction online seemed to be one of complete shock with simple tweets reading what? being extremely common. Others sarcastically referred to Musks salutes as subtle. Some people referred to the gesture as a roman salute, which does indeed predate the Nazi era. But ever since the 1940s, the gesture has become fully associated with the Nazis, who built a fascist dictatorship that killed 6 million Jews during the Holocaust.Philip Bump of the Washington Post noted on Bluesky that anyone trying to defend Musks salutes as being roman salutes and not necessarily associated with the Nazis were not arguing in good faith. It was a Roman salute is an updated version of actually, the Buddhists also used swastikas. If you are using it post-1945, you know very well that the association has changed. Philip Bump (@pbump.com) January 20, 2025 at 12:56 PM Musk himself shared the entire video of his short speech on X, even as other users focused exclusively on the Nazi salutes. Obviously people across social media were disturbed by what they see as the Trump administrations embrace of fascism. But now that Musk has made a salute associated with the most evil regime of the 20th century, vulnerable people will be even more concerned about how bad things are going to get in the days, weeks, and months ahead. Extremists online celebrated Musks salutes, clearly understanding them to be Nazi gestures. this is projecting 2025 by the way. the version libs were freaking out about was a fake moderate version that we gaslighted them into believing as a joke. https://t.co/OmmfIozKts Anime Kaiser Willy II (@praesto04) January 20, 2025 Even some extremists still referred to it as a roman salute while tying it to other neo-Nazi moments. It's been a long road from @RichardBSpencer's Heil Trump speech in 2016 to @elonmusk's speech on @realDonaldTrump's Inauguration Day in 2025 But after eight long years, the Roman salute is officially back in power pic.twitter.com/7kMducfgTw Augustus Invictus (@EmperorInvictus) January 20, 2025 But a handful of Musk fans insisted that the billionaire wasnt actually making Nazi salutes, with Ian Miles Cheong, a far-right influencer, writing that reporter Aaron Rupar had somehow edited the clip in a misleading way. Its not entirely clear what Cheong seems to mean, since everyone can see the salutes for themselves. Left wing propagandist Aaron Rupar disingenuously clipped Elon Musk to make it seem as if he was giving the Roman salute in his celebration of America. Here is the part he left out. pic.twitter.com/egdtyD4ewM Ian Miles Cheong (@stillgray) January 20, 2025 Gizmodo attempted to reach out for comment at Musks companies Tesla and X but didnt immediately get a response. • Black Circle Infuses the Cursed Media Genre With Psychic Terrors
    gizmodo.com
A relic from the 1970sa self-help record purporting to teach the listener to reach your full potentialstirs up frightening chaos for two sisters in Black Circle, a 2018 horror film thats well worth seeking out now that its streaming on Shudder. Made in Sweden by Spanish writer-director Adrin Garca Bogliano (2022s La Exorcista), Black Circle plunges you right into the woo-woo by opening on a film clip purportedly taken from a correspondence course peddled by the Stockholm Institute for Magnetic Research. The technique its pushing is sort of hypnotism taken to the extreme, and its claims are fantastic. Who wouldnt want to become the best version of themselves by simply purging all the bad energy and intrusive thoughts theyve been clutching onto since childhood? Its a tempting proposition for Celeste (Felice Jankell), a twentysomething whose life is currently circling the existential drain. Shes just broken up with her boyfriend and been fired from her summer job, and writers block has prevented her from even starting a long-looming school paper. So when her sister Isa (Erica Midfjll)who she hasnt seen in some timeinvites her to stop by her office, Celeste is impressed by Isas big-shot job and upbeat attitude. Things are going wildly well, Isa tells her, and she wants to help Celeste turn her own life around. Though Celeste bristles a bit at her pushy sister, thats replaced by confusion when Isa hands her a record and tells her to play the B-side as you fall asleep. The effects are life-changing, she promises, and they all stem from this weird LP she found among junk left behind by grandmas cousin Lundstrom, who until his passing was the orphaned sisters only other living relative. Celeste is skeptical of what feels like a cult come-on, but she gives it a spin. The next morning, she sits bolt upright, sprints to her laptop, and triumphantly pounds out page after page of her paper. Naturally, theres a catch to this miraculous good fortune, and as Black Circle builds toward showing exactly what that catch looks like, the film divides itself into short chapters, not unlike a correspondence course might. It also jumps back into the film-within-a-film to layer in some exposition about magnetic hypnosis, delivered in optimistic terms that dont match the increasingly uneasy results we see with the sisters. The technique guides a person in offloading the mental baggage thats been holding them backbut once expunged, said baggage takes the form of an Ethereal Double, a sort of doppelganger that gradually draws more and more energy from its original source. Shudder Thats disturbing enough even before Black Circle introduces another layer of mythology, involving creatures that intervene if an Ethereal Double gets too comfortable in the human realm. Thats an aspect of the story that doesnt get enough fleshing out, but Black Circle is otherwise deeply invested in its subversion of New Age psychology. As their lives become choked with paranoid delusions that just might be real, Isa and Celeste track down the woman who released the record, a psychic who suffered her own tragedy in learning the harmful effects of magnetic hypnosisand who grimly springs into action to help its latest victims. Though the reverse exorcism ritual that takes over the films third act drags a bit, Black Circle has a unique energy and self-assured, often psychedelic visual style that allows it to carve out a unique space in the realm of cursed-media films. But unlike the characters in, for instance, The Ringwho watch a haunted video tape for entertainment, not knowing itll seal their doom Black Circles sisters intentionally, albeit naively, open themselves up to the LPs mind-warping capabilities. The resulting journey brings plenty of terror, but it also illustrates Black Circles deepest theme: you gotta do the work necessary to move past the negativity thats accumulated in your life, rather than hoping to heal by just wishing the bad stuff away.Black Circle is now streaming on Shudder. • Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Section 31
    gizmodo.com
This weekStar Trek boldly goes with the first major movie of its streaming era: Section 31, a long-in-the-works former series turned into a streaming movie vehicle for Michelle Yeoh, returning to the franchise for the first time since she exitedDiscovery in 2020. But aside from the controversial spy organization that gives the film its name, heres what else you need to know coming into the film. What Is Section 31? First introduced in the sixth season ofStar Trek: Deep Space Nine, Section 31 is a clandestine intelligence branch of the Federationseparate from the public facing intelligence wing of Starfleetintended to act as a black ops organization with the remit to act against existential threats to the Federation. Named for a clause in Starfleets charter that allowed for extraordinary measures in the face of extreme threats, Section 31 operated without official knowledge or guidance from the Federation or Starfleet at large, performing wetworks, subterfuge, and counterintelligence operations throughout the history of Starfleet. Although introduced inDeep Space Nine at the height of the Dominion War arc, Section 31 would make appearances inEnterprise andDiscovery to establish their roots earlier within Star Treks primary timeline, but ever since its debut, the group has been seen as deeply controversial byStar Trek fans for what the existence of secret police within the franchises utopian setting means for the idealistic nature of that utopia. The Brief, Universe-Hopping History of Philippa Georgiou Discovery first introduced Michelle Yeohs Philippa Georgiou as the captain of the USS Shenzhou, only for her to be killed in action at the outbreak of the Klingon-Federation war portrayed throughout the shows first season. However, Yeoh would return to portray the character later that same season during a plotline set in Star Treks infamous parallel reality, the Mirror Universe. There, Georgiou was not an officer in the Terran Empire, but its Emperorand after surviving a coup attempt, she was brought back with the crew of the Discovery toStar Treks prime universe at the behest of Michael Burnham, who had been a protg of the prime Georgiou and first officer aboard theShenzhou. Mirror Georgiou was recruited into Section 31 after the conclusion of the war, acting as an agent initially tasked with maintaining the stability of the Klingon Empires post-war chancellor, LRell. But she eventually made her way back aboard the Discovery when the ship was forced to send itself thousands of years in to the future to the 32nd Century to destroy a rogue artificial intelligence developed by Section 31, Control. However, temporal distance from both her home reality and her home timeline caused Georgiou to begin destabilizing on a molecular level. After encountering the Guardian of Forever, who tested Georgiou to see if her time in the prime universe had changed her as a person, she was sent back to an undisclosed time period (more on that later) where the Mirror and Prime universes were still aligned, allowing her to stay in the latter universe without the threat of destabilization. Paramount Who Else Is in Section 31? Yeohs Georgiou is the primary returning character inSection 31, but shes not the only familiar character among its cast of mostly new characters. Heres a brief rundown of the main Section 31 agents were set to meet in the movie: Omari Hardwick playsAlok, the leader of a Section 31 cell on a secret mission that recruits Georgiou in an attempt to make her pay for her past crimes as the Terran Emperor. Robert Kazinsky playsZeph, Aloks right hand man who lives inside a mechanical exoskeleton. Sam Richardson playsQuasi, another agent on Aloks team, and a Chameloid, a shapeshifting race first seen in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Humberly Gonzalez playsMelle, a Deltan agent on Aloks team who, unlike prior Deltans to join Starfleet, did not take an oath of celibacy, allowing her to use her species natural charms to benefit Section 31. Sven Ruygrok plays the most mysterious member of Aloks team, known only asFuzz. Described as a fun-loving character with anger issues, his pointed ears suggest he may either be a surprisingly emotional Vulcan or perhaps one of their sister species, the Romulans. Rounding out the main cast is Kacey Rohl as Rachel Garrett, a young Starfleet officer assigned to Aloks team for oversight purposes, despite official knowledge of the divisions existence being classified. Garrett has previously appeared inStar Trek before in the Next Generation episode Yesterdays Enterprise, where she was played by Tricia ONeil, and was captain of the USS Enterprise-C until its destruction defending a Klingon outpost from Romulan forces in 2344. When Is Section 31 Set? While we dont have an exact setting for the movie just yet beyond the fact that its set inStar Treks prime reality, the existence of Rachel Garrett in the cast suggests that the series has to be set some time in the early 24th century, given that she has not yet ascended to the rank of captain nor taken command of the Enterprise-C. This would setSection 31 in a period largely uncovered byStar Trek on the small screen, commonly known as the Lost Era. The original series was set during the late 2260s, with its successor films taking place from the 2270s through to the 2290s, while The Next Generation began in 2364, shortly after the commissioning of the Enterprise-D almost 20 years after its predecessors destruction.TheEnterprise-C itself operated in a period of time where the Federation and the Klingon Empires relationship after the signing of the Khitomer Accords peace treaty at the end of the 23rd century was still relatively strained. It took the Federation flagships sacrifice safeguarding Klingon forces to strengthen relations between the two factions, eventually leading to the formal Treaty of Alliance established some time between 2344 and the events of The Next Generationwhich could give us some hints as to what the state of the universe is like by the time of Section 31. Section 31 hits Paramount+ starting January 24. Want more io9 news? • Castlevania: Nocturne Creators Talk Legacy, Going Woke, and Hopes for the Future
    gizmodo.com
In the spirit of maintaining its momentum of critically acclaimed video game adaptations, Netflix began 2025 with the release of the second season of Castlevania: Nocturne on January 16. Because we simply cant help wondering how the vampiric sausage was made, io9 spoke with directors Samuel and Adam Deats about the pressure of upholding the series reputation as the one to break the video game adaptation curseas well as Gamergate-adjacent discourse brainrot, and their aspirations for the future of the series. This interview has been edited for length. Isaiah Colbert, io9: Castlevania has become a staple series of exceptional video game adaptations alongside the Sonic franchise doing gangbusters and Arcane. What is the secret to the series success, and what makes Nocturne season two the best season of Castlevania yet? Adam Deats: Ive always felt weve been chasing Castlevania season two, episode seven for years. Its been always hard to beat that moment. The best thing I could say about [Nocturne season two] is that the historical references in this season, combined with the last two episodes of this season, are some of the best moments weve had in terms of just the general visual flair of it all and getting to see certain characters come into their own.Samuel Deats: As far as what the secret sauce is for a video game adaptation, thats such a tough question. When we look back at where we started when we released the first season of the original series in 2017, as everyone likes to put it, we broke the video game adaptation curse, or however you want to call it. At the end of the day, it came down to simply focusing on telling a good story that feels like the source material youre adapting. I dont know what we did in particular, but I think many adaptations up to that point struggled with that focus on strong storytelling, strong characters, and that sort of thing. We still want to make the kinds of references that you want to see as fans that we want to put in there. We put in with love and care. Those are the kinds of things, I think, folks saw that there was genuine love in those references. Whereas in some past adaptations before that point, it felt like it was sometimes done out of obligation or because folks caught themselves up on what a certain adaptation was, then tried their best to make it work without fully understanding its heart. We werent thinking about it that much. We just went in wanting to do the best we could as fans of the series.Adam: The best that we can ever do, and the best that anyone can do, is care about the things theyre working on and the source material. Ensure that whatever youre putting on screen feels right to you and close enough to the source material so that it does justice to the story youre telling as well. Netflix Samuel: If it comes from a place of love from people who care about it, then they are putting that effort towards it [and] it naturally comes through. Thats the best guess that I can make. When the first season of the original series came out, no video game adaptation had done particularly well, and adult animation was not something anyone had faith in, in the U.S. When we made that first couple of seasons, we had a very low budget. There was a lot of, Is this going to work? Does anyone care about this sort of thing? We proved that people did care about seeing adult animation made in the west. That was a big deal that had a massive ripple effect on our shock and made us very happy to see. But its also shown that good stories can be told through adapting video games. Video games have had stories that can translate to something meaningful. That was frowned upon by a lot of folks for a long time.Samuel: [Laughs] And I apologize for opening the floodgates. Now everybodys doing it, and its all been a lot of great stuff, including Fallout, Arcane, obviously, and Sonic. Adam: It is difficult to see it turned into a trend. Well see how that plays out, but I am happy to see good shows coming out of it. I really loved Fallout. That was a really good time. I just hope that folks continue to come at it from a place of love for what theyre making.io9: In line with the entertainment industry getting lambasted with accusations of peddling DEI and going woke, Castlevania: Nocturne has been hit with that same discourse as well, with the usual crowd accusing the show of blackwashing with its depiction of original game character Annette. Whats your reaction to the revolving door of discourse that always seems to rear its head about video game adaptations and black and female representation as a disparaging element to the industrys widely white, male, Eurocentric status quo? Adam: I think that were just in a right-wing backlash, in general. I think the pendulum is swinging, unfortunately, in a certain direction. Were not the only ones that have been hit by this. Its been everything. Its been all over the map to a degree thats even tedious. Its always hard to say whether something we did caused it or if everybody is just hyper-focusing on it now. Samuel: To that point, this isnt our first rodeo with this sorta thing, and you can see how there is a difference in how people are reacting now versus how they were responding when season two of the original series came out when we had Isaac in the story. Were seeing a very different reaction now, and I dont think thats necessarily because we did anything differently. I think thats just the landscape that were in right now as a whole. I dont know that we can do anything about that other than keep putting out the best work we can. As Adam said, I do think there is a weird hyper-focus on it that has changed over the past few years.Adam: I know thats frustrating for some people to hear, but the reality is that people have to understand that there should be room to tell stories with any character in it. I dont feel apologetic that our writers decided to do something that felt right for the source material in a particular period. The reality is that the Haitian Revolution was intrinsically linked to the French Revolution. Its a historical fact and felt right for the story theyre trying to tell. Im not going to sit here and feel bad about changes made that were, I think, more than just functional. They really worked. Sorry not sorry, I guess. Netflix Samuel: Adam and I are big fans of the games. We have been very linked to them for most of our lives. Weve been playing them since the NES era, diving into old forums and all that kind of stuff. We have been fans for longer than we have been making the show. When we look at Rondo of Bloodthis particular game that weve been adaptingAnnette is not a character in the games that was even really discussed a lot amongst fans. The focus was always on Richter, Maria, and Dracula. When I saw what the writers wanted to do to reimagine Annette, give her more of a presence and everything, even as a fan, I thought, thats great. This is the place to do it because she wasnt a character that folks talked about or thought about a lot back in the day. When youre making an adaptation and looking for places to bring in new interests and life, it is like looking for areas where theres a character who didnt have much to them and wasnt developed a whole lot. What can be done here that ties it into the greater narratives happening? I fully stand behind that decision. I think it was very cool. Adam: When discussions are had about Castlevania as large, Sam and I end up being more on the purist side of the conversation. Typically, we want it to be as close to the games as possible for the most part, with some exceptions. Weve had disagreements in the past over eight years. Its going to happen to any production. We have had disagreements where we thought things were too far away from source material. And there have been disagreements this season, too. But we didnt disagree about the decision of Annette. We felt that was a right call.io9: In io9s review, we wrote that the final team-up fight scene between Richter, Juste, Maria, and Annette against Erzsebet eclipses that of the original series team-up between Trevor, Alucard, and series MVP Sypha against Dracula and his horde of vampires (depending on how we felt on a certain day). Was it a personal challenge for the team at Powerhouse Animation to top the feats it accomplished before with these big team-up ensemble fight scenes? Adam: [Laughs] Its a hellscape, man. Its so hard. The worst thing you can do in animation is crowd battles, and we keep doing crowd battles. Its so dumb. Because its a few characters versus Erzsebet or Drolta, thats not so bad because youve got three to four characters fighting in a group. The logistics of doing lots of special effects work, and action sequences that are dynamic still, with the special effects stuff that was going on, were pretty tough. And we still had crowd stuff in that episode.Samuel: Episode seven, in particular, was an extremely difficult production that required careful planning and putting a lot of chess pieces in just the right place. But it was one where we finally had an opportunity to focus on a particular fight for longer than weve ever been able to. I look back on the Dracula fight in season two, episode seven; you have that great Bloody Tears fight at the beginning, the actual Dracula fight, and then it turns into Alucard versus Dracula. The actual length of that fight and everything was relatively short. Its not like this big long thing where we got to just focus on it for a super long time. I was delighted that we got to get to that Erzsebet fight pretty early on in the episode and then come back to it multiple times along with the Alucard/Drolta fight happening in the background and the hordes of night creatures that is another part of the set piece. In my experience, particularly with 2D animation when youre doing big battle scenes with large crowds, many folks think big battle scenes with lots of characters are a spectacle. In 2D animation, I dont think that it ends up turning out that way because it is so difficult to do big crowds. You have to pull back on certain things. I think folks are more excited by or at least I am battles between particular characters or a small group, etc. I think its more meaningful from a storytelling perspective. Its more fun seeing multiple powers clashing, in the case of the group versus Erzsebet. I dont know how much I was thinking back on the Dracula fight and trying to eclipse it, but for me, that was an exciting opportunity to take some of my favorite characters and have them beat the shit out of each other. A lot of people on the team were really excited about it. Netflix Adam: In a lot of little ways, were always trying to show something new because we dont always want to keep doing the same thing. Some of the puzzle pieces fit into place near the end with the introduction of things like Marias dragon, which are things we didnt really necessarily do before. [Laughs] We didnt get to fight with a giant Pokmon (I say jokingly). Stuff like that lends itself to doing something new while sustaining within Castlevania lore, and thats whats really fun. Being able to play with old special attacks and sub-weapons and all those things from Castlevania. Samuel: I really enjoy trying to craft a fight where you see characters thinking and trying to be strategic in working together. It was really fun to be able to put something like that together. Adam: Sam was very excited that Juste jumped back into action this season. He kind of obsessed about ensuring he was present in that last fight. Samuel: [Laughs] I really wanted his comeback to shine. So I tried my best with that. Netflix io9: For the Easter egg and referential video game fans, whats one scene from this season that was your most proud moment to adapt this season? Adam: We have not had a lot of chances to do the traditional Belmont cross boomerang, but Richter, in episode eight, does an almost Harmony of Dissonance version of a double cross boomerang, where he creates ice boomerangs instead that are in the cross formation and throws them. Obviously, Trevor gets to do it, but we get to do a more exciting version of it. Some of Justes Harmony of Dissonance magic combination attacks are present throughout this season. Theyre kind of all over the place in small degrees. In the last fight, theres a moment where he summons a frosty ice cross that acts as a drone that hovers above him and fires additional ice shots, directly from Harmony of Dissonance. Theres a lot of fun stuff like that, which I think people who have played the games and dove into the particulars of the attacks will see. Samuel: For whatever reason, the cross-ice drone from Harmony of Dissonance is my favorite attack, even though I dont think its that good compared to a bunch of his other spells. I think its really funny and cool to have a drone floating around shooting like a machine gun so I was delighted to work that in. I was really proud of when I worked in Alucards eyes going red in episode eight and him using Dark Inferno, the big magma ball. Not only does it work as a reference to the games, but its also making a connection to his father for the storytelling in his development. I was pretty happy about that little nod. Adam: The red flames and the red eyes are loose references to dark metamorphosis from Symphony of the Night. Thats when Alucard turns on vampire mode and can gain life back from blood. The red flames on his blade are also a reference to some of his weapons from Symphony of the Night, like the Masamune and a couple of other blood-based weapons that he had in that game. We also have a captain get turned into a night creature [who] is a reference to Frozen Shade that I thought visually that came out pretty neatthe see-through effect. Netflix io9:Across its eight episodes, Nocturne concludes with notable finality, with its characters diverging to continue going on more adventures, presumably. With so many characters and moving pieces this season, were there any storylines the team had to cut for time? Adam: No storylines were cut for time, necessarily. I think that there was a sequence that Sam [story]boarded for Juste in episode seven, I think. Juste had a big, flashy action thing that he did and we had to actually cut it because of scope and time. Samuel: I think the most heartbreaking thing was probably that. I did a big Juste-focused throw down, but the episode was already running way long and the shot cap was way high. I tried moving it somewhere else, and it didnt work there either. I think it was the right call because I think we were would have been crushed if we tried to make it work. That was, I think, the first time in series history that I had to cut one of my own action sequences. It wasnt long. It was like a minute or something like that. It was still a little painful to have to cut something that I was pretty happy with. Maybe itll end up in a special feature or something like that in the future. The animatic for it. io9: In swift order, Castlevania: Nocturne was renewed for a second season within a week of its debut. At the time, you both sent a message to the fans saying they wont have to wait long for season two. Should lightning strike twice in season two of Nocturne, will fans have to wait long for a possible third season, or are things still in the discussion stage regarding the future of the franchise?Samuel: Weve been in this boat before when it comes to the wait between seasons. After season two of the original series, we had a lull of a couple of months before we kicked in with season three and four. Then after season four, there was a much longer wait before we were starting anything with Nocturne. So this isnt really anything new for us other than the fact that the industry at large is kind of in a weird place that has affected entertainment as a whole. At the end of the day, I dont think its going to impact us in a way thats different from in the past, but were just going to have to wait and see. If we do get to continue with the logical next step for the storyline with these characters, we would probably want to make sure we take our time with it and do it the best way possible, make sure that its something that honors the characters and the source material. I dont want to make any promises. If it happens, we want to do it right, and that may take time. No matter what, we are hopeful and confident about what weve made and the future of the franchise. But well just have to wait and see. Castlevania as a whole is a pretty broad franchise that has a lot of storytelling opportunities in it and theres interest in that. Well see how that all plays out over the coming months and after season two comes out. Adam: Cross your fingers for us. Samuel: Therell be a bit of time with discussions and stuff like that, figuring out what that looks like. So just hang tight for us, guys. Netflix io9: Of all the Castlevania characters, whose story would you love to see explored deeper should a new season come to pass? Adam: Thats hard because there are a lot of them, right? I think Sam and I have always talked about wanting to get to Symphony of the Night eventually. I think that story that focuses on that, something thats Alucard-centric, but then includes Richter and whatnot and kind of like putting a button on that stuff, I think, would be interesting. Theres a weird alternate universe where somehow we do a flashback movie thats just for Juste and Harmony of Dissonance. Weve even talked about, Man, wouldnt it be fun to do a Lament of Innocence and do the whole origin story for the entire series. I dont know, its tough because theres a lot of places to go. io9: What do you hope the fans get out of this season of Nocturne that they before as a continuation of the momentum the series has garnered on Netflix? Adam: What I think is interesting about the season is, again, the historical grounding that the writers have put there. And the interest in that will hopefully resonate with the audience as well. Thats unique because previous Castlevania seasons tried not to overly reference history in the real world. So I would say that that stands out. Theres also unique stuff going on with Annettes journey this season that is unique for the Castlevania universe. From that perspective, I hope the audience finds something new in those areas. As always, the stuff thats more Castlevania, like Richter, Alucard and Justes stories, Im hoping feels at home with fans.Samuel: I am excited for folks to see Marias arc this season. It is doing some fun things, particularly the first half, and it pays off in a way that I hope fans will enjoy. Adam: Some of the theming going on with Marias arc in terms of the costs of revolution and how that can affect its young people, I think, is really interesting. Im hoping that has the weight we think it does. All eight episodes of Castlevania: Nocturne are streaming on Netflix. Want more io9 news? • Doogee S200 Review: A Tough Android Phone With Great Battery Life
    gizmodo.com
Rugged phones get a bad rap. They get written off as some novelty act, a bulky behemoth that should only show its face on a construction site or in a military capacity. But Doogee, a Chinese company, sees beyond a few niche cases to bring us the Doogee S200, a mid-tier smartphone with some serious ruggedness but enough features to brush fingertips with the flagship category. Available for as low as $229 in AliExpress or $339 on Amazon, the S200 is almost a steal with its extreme durability, near all-day battery life, and features that youd expect on a premium-grade smartphone. However, there are a few caveats. For instance, since this phone isnt marketed towards the U.S. market, it wont work on some of the 5G networks on some of the bigger carriers. And the performance, while good, doesnt match up to other mid-tier phones. But somehow, it manages to run some of the most taxing games surprisingly well. However, the S200 is inexpensive for those looking for a tough smartphone with ridiculous endurance and performance that will surprise them. Doogee S200 The Doogee S200 brings rugged durability and excellent battery life to a strong gaming phone for under $500. Pros Cons Doogee S200 Review: Design Photo: Adriano Contreras/Gizmodo Is that a case? Whys it so heavy? You could use this thing as a weapon! These are the common responses I got from everyone I showed the Doogee S200. And while placing the smartphone in a sturdy sock and using it as a makeshift blackjack is an intriguing idea, its not what the S200 is for. As someone whos wrecked a phone or two in her life, Im a fan of the phones bulk. Its a sign of its innate toughness. The phone has IP68, IP69K, and MIL-STD 810 ratings. That means the phone is waterproof and dustproof. Its also drop-proof and can withstand falls from 5.9 feet (1.8 meters). It even has covers over the USB-C port to prevent water or dust from getting in. The display is made of Corning Gorilla Glass to prevent scratches.Admittedly, that added protection does add quite a bit of bulk. The 7.1 x 3.23 x 0.63-inch device weighs in at a chunky 12.9 ounces. It makes the Google Pixel 9 (7 ounces, 6 x 2.8 x 0.3 inches), Samsung Galaxy S24 SE (7.5 ounces, 6.4 x 3 x 0.31 inches), Nothing Phone (2a) Plus (6.7 ounces, 6.4 x 3 x 0.33 inches), and iPhone 16 (6 ounces, 5.8 x 2.8 x 0.31 inches) seem like featherweight in comparison.Chonkiness notwithstanding, the Doogee has mech-based design thats sure to appeal to Gundam, Transformers, and Power Rangers fans, The aerospace-grade alloy rear panel colored black and pewter gray is made up of a series of sharp angles that recede into gentle slopes. The centerpiece of the design is what Doogee calls a sub-screen. Its like the Dynamic Island found on modern iPhones, just in a more convenient location (More on that later). The 1.3-inch circular AMOLED mini display is flanked on both sides by four chambers that house the camera sensors. Photo: Adriano Contreras/Gizmodo The phone continues the mecha-look with four prominent screws running down the sides. The volume and fingerprint reader/power buttons sit on the right, with the dual SIM card tray and a button that users can customize for three separate actions one for single, double, and triple presses. The USB-C charging port sits at the bottom of the phone, hidden beneath a rubber gasket. The front of the phone consists mostly of a display surrounded by rather thick bezels, particularly on the top and bottom. A teardrop camera protrudes ever so slightly into the top of the display. Although the black-and-gray colorway is cool, I wish I could have gotten my hands on either the green-and-yellow versions, as I love a pop of color. Doogee S200X Review: Display Its not OLED or even AMOLED, but Ill still take the S200Xs 6.7-inch IPS LCD screen. As I watched the second second of Squid Game, I saw every drop of blood splatter as it left the bodies of the unlucky contestants. The deep red offered a lurid contrast against the cheerful rainbow-painted floors in the Six Legs episode on the 2400 x 1080 display. Of course, its not as vivid as the aforementioned screens, but for the price, Im not going to pooh-pooh what the S200 has to offer.Photo: Adriano Contreras/Gizmodo The screen isnt as bright as the Pixel 9, but I had no problem reading articles in direct sunlight. Games like Dead Cells and Zenless Zone Zero ran smoothly with the auto-refresh rate that automatically ramps the rate from the standard 60Hz to 120Hz when gaming or working on something particularly taxing. Doogee also included a barebones Game Mode that aggregates all your games and disables notifications. Lets talk about the sub-screen. Its a really useful way to interact with certain apps and phone functions without engaging with the main display. In addition to the clock, you can read notifications, control your designated music app, check battery life, snap a photo, answer calls, and a few other helpful features.Doogee S200 Review: UI and Performance Unlike other Android phones, Doogee runs stock AndroidAndroid 14. The 2.2-GHz octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 7050 processor, 12GB RAM, and 256GB of onboard storage are pretty spry, allowing for zippy navigation between apps and home screens. I only saw a slight hint of slowdown when I started playing Zenless Zone Zero, and thats after I launched 50 Google Chrome pages, several G-Suite apps, BlueSky, and Threads. It should be noted that the smartphone is listed with 32GB of RAM. Thats because Doogee has mapped some of the 256GB to the RAM to fool the system into thinking it has more capacity to install applications. Even though the S200 hasnt made the leap to Android 15 (and Im not sure that it ever will), you still get a host of features from the previous OS, such as more customization on the lock and home screens. You also get better security and data protection, such as using biometric authentication instead of passwords for more apps. Speaking of apps, theres Toolbag, which is a collection of apps that harkens to the phones construction tool potential. Theres a Protractor, Plumb Bob, and Level. Doogee also threw the Pedometer, NFC Card Emulator, and Mirror in there, which is a bit confusing. When I ran Geekbench 6, the S200 returned a single-core score of 990 and a multi-core score of 2,471. This is a solid score, but it doesnt match the Nothing Phone (2a) (1,198/2,824), the Pixel 9 (1,699/4,241), or the iPhone 16 ( 3,412 and 8,416). Doogee S200 Review: Camera Doogee outfitted the S200 with an impressive gathering of cameras and features. The main shooter is 100MP with a 20MP night vision camera and a 2MP macro sensor. The pictures I captured had good color, but the details can sometimes be fuzzy. The layers of wasp nest l took on a cloudy day arent as sharp as I expected. The same goes for a bouquet of glitter-dipped roses. Still, I was impressed with how well the phone captured my dogs fur even though one was in motion as she was licking her sister. Photo: Sherri L. Smith/DreamSmith LLC Photo: Sherri L. Smith/DreamSmith LLC Photo: Sherri L. Smith/DreamSmith LLC Photo: Sherri L. Smith/DreamSmith LLC Photo: Sherri L. Smith/DreamSmith LLC Photo: Sherri L. Smith/DreamSmith LLC Photo: Sherri L. Smith/DreamSmith LLC Photo: Sherri L. Smith/DreamSmith LLC Photo: Sherri L. Smith/DreamSmith LLC But my favorite shots by far are the night vision shots. Thats right, night vision. Although it made me look like something out of a horror film, the mode was great for capturing my dogs shenanigans in near-pitch black darkness. Theres also an underwater mode, but since the phone isnt designed for scuba diving or deep immersion, Im not sure what youll photograph. The 20MP selfie cam was a bit too good, capturing more than a few of my gray hairs and colorful locs. I really like how many camera modes the S200 offers. Aside from Night Vision, theres Beauty, 100MP, Super Night, GIF, and Mono, to name a few. But I was missing the option to hit wide or ultrawide shots. The phone also lacks optical stabilization, only offering digital,l which is part of why some of your images details arent as sharp as they should be. The Night Vision and Macro cameras do just that, leaving that poor 100MP sensor to do all the heavy lifting. And maybe I shouldnt be complaining when the phone is so undeniably cheap, but if other similarly priced phones can do it, I cant help but notice.Doogee S200 Review: Battery The S200 has plenty of good features, but the best by far has to be the battery life. Its 10,100mAH battery lasts almost 24 hours, at 23:12, when playing a 24-hour YouTube video at 50% brightness. The phone has Quick Charge 3.0, which means the S200 can achieve a 50% charge in only 30 minutes. And if youre in a pinch, you can use the S200 as a charging brick with its reverse charge feature. Photo: Adriano Contreras/Gizmodo But Doogee, I have a bone to pick with you. Why, oh why, do you have a big ole plate on the back of the phone with what looks to be lightning bolts? I thought it meant that the S200 has wireless charging capabilities. But imagine my surprise when I placed the phone on not one, but two different wireless chargers and got bupkis. Then I thought it was NFC, but thats not it.Doogee S200 Review: Verdict Should you buy the Doogee S200? It depends. The S200 has a lot going for itself. Its super rugged and durable, has great performance, and even better battery life. The rear sub-screen adds some convenient functionality, and man, that Night Vision is just cool. And you really cant beat that price. But Im not sure how many people would willingly settle for 4G in a 5G era. Plus, the cameras with all its features could be better, and Im not sure that Android 15 will ever come to the S200. But for people looking for a rough, tough, semi-premium flagship phone for under $500, the Doogee S200s competitors are few and far between.

  • How to Unblock CapCut in the US? Use a VPN
    gizmodo.com
CapCut has been banned bundled with TikTok on January 19th, 2025. The ban is a result of ByteDances failure to comply with the 2024 law, which requested that ByteDance virtually give up its ownership of CapCut and TikTok.As things stand, millions of Americans are bereft of one of the best video editors. Luckily for you, you dont have to be one of them. Instead, you can use a VPN, unblock CapCut in the US, and get back to forging and editing your videos. How to Unblock CapCut in the US?So as said, a reputable VPN will do the job majestically. By reputable, we refer to NordVPN as the most popular service in the US. It offers thousands of global servers, all more than ready to satisfy your countless needs. Moreover, its built to overcome geo-blocks and website restrictions. As a result, its employed by Americans who want to unblock CapCut in the US. They know NordVPN is risk-free because of a 30-day money-back guarantee. This allows them or you to give it a shot without losing money on the back end. If you like it, keep using it. If not, kick it to the curb and move on.Unblock CapCut in the US With NordVPNBut how does a VPN unblock CapCut in the USA? CapCut restricts access to its video editor to all people with a US IP address. A VPN hides your original American IP and replaces it with the new one, from another country. Thats the whole philosophy behind it.Step-by-Step GuideNow that we know how things work, lets see how to put NordVPN to practice and use it to finally unblock CapCut Video Editor in the United States:Subscribe to NordVPN. Use the blue buttons within this guide or jump to this link to save 70% on its 2-year plans. The money-back guarantee remains whichever plan you choose!Install NordVPN on your device. You can use it on up to 10 devices at a time, plus, NordVPN works on all systems (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS).Boot up NordVPN and then sign in with your credentials.IMPORTANT: Connect to a server abroad NOT in the US. You can use Australia, the UK, Canada, or any other location where CapCut works. Finally, visit CapCut, sign in to your account, and enjoy the magic.Unblock CapCut in the US With NordVPNWhy Is CapCut Banned in the US?You know how to unblock CapCut in the US but youre looking for reasons behind the ban. As always, theyre mostly political and find their roots in the Chinese-American conflict. Namely, ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok and CapCut, was forced to sell its shares until January 19th, 2025 to be able to operate in the US because of alleged data collection claims from the US government. Having refused the deal, the company had no other choice but to remove its presence. As a result, both CapCut and TikTok were banished from the App Stores. If you try to use CapCut even in your browser, youll get this error message: CapCut (Error message in the USA)It directly implies that CapCut is blocked in the US because of the law enacted in 2024. But is this going to be an endless ban? Likely not but it will be a lengthy one. Donald Trump, the man we all know, vowed to sort things out with ByteDance. However, he still hasnt taken office, and when he does, this likely wont be his #1 priority as there are larger, more pressing issues than not being able to use CapCut. Either way, we know that the ban wont be indefinite but we dont know its length. How to Unblock CapCut in the US for Free?As hinted at before, you can unblock CapCut in the US for free even with NordVPN. This is a premium provider but a 30-day money-back guarantee allows you to get a refund. With a full refund in place, you lost nothing, which means everything was free. This is the only way to fully enjoy CapCut in the USA safely, securely, and without restrictions. Of course, you can always aim for a 100% free VPN but in this case, youll come across various limitations thatll irritate you over time. Some safe providers like Proton VPN and Hide.me are very slow. The former also doesnt allow you to choose the server, making its unblocking prowess quite poor. Faster options, like Windscribe and PrivadoVPN, limit you to 10 GB of monthly bandwidth.CapCut users know how data-consuming this editor can be, especially if you rely on templates that need to be downloaded. Not to mention that many popular free VPNs tend to store logs of your private data, including browsing history.Theres a finer way to unblock CapCut in the US and not jeopardize your privacy. As said, NordVPN fits the bill ideally; heres a NordVPN coupon for an added discount if youre on a tight budget.CapCut No Templates What to Do?Some users have reported not being able to use any templates in the US.This, again, means the video editor isnt working properly, as templates are usually location-dependent. If youre in the US, CapCut likely blocks access to templates for the reasons mentioned above. The solution? Its the same!Use NordVPN, connect to a VPN server overseas, and regain access. In SummaryWith everything sorted out, its time to let you do your thing. You know whats up. Steal NordVPN at 70% off now, set it up, and get back to your precious video-editing mastery. If youre a social media influencer, a bonus will also be the ability to use TikTok in the USA with the VPN enabled. TikTok and CapCut are two best friends, remember?Another friend is NordVPN but this time, your friend, which helps you overcome such restrictions and sidestep seemingly immovable obstacles. One of them is also a Pornhub block in Florida, which this VPN can lift in seconds!Try NordVPN Risk-Free for 30 Days

  • Teen Sets Fire to Congressmans Office Allegedly Over TikTok Ban

By Matt Novak Published January 19, 2025 | Comments (1) | Rep. Glenn Grothman (left) and a local congressional office in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin where an arsonist allegedly set a fire because he was upset about the TikTok ban. Photos: Rep. Glenn Grothman of Wisconsin A 19-year-old Wisconsin man was arrested in the early morning hours of Sunday for setting first to an office leased by a member of Congress in the city of Fond Du Lac. The unnamed man reportedly told police he was upset about the TikTok ban, which prohibited users from opening the app starting late Saturday, but came back online Sunday after promises from president-elect Donald Trump not to enforce the ban. Police arrived at a structure fire at 525 N. Peters Avenue in the city of Fond Du Lac around 1:00 a.m. local time Sunday, according to local news station WMTV. The office is leased by U.S. Representative Glenn Grothman, a Republican who represents Wisconsins 6th District and voted in favor of the TikTok ban or divest law that had overwhelming bipartisan support. The building was unoccupied when the fire started and no injuries have been reported. First responders were able to keep the fire in check with fire extinguishers until firefighters arrived, according to local news outlet Channel 3000. Judging by the photo released by Rep. Grothmans office, which has gone viral on social media, it appears the fire blackened the outside of the door and damaged an air conditioning unit, as you can see above. The 19-year-old arson suspect is from Menasha, according to ABC affiliate WISN, which reports he admitted to starting the fire in response to recent talks of a TikTok ban. That man has not yet been identified but is being held on an arson charge at the Fond du Lac County Jail. Acts of violence, in any form, are not tolerated, and we remain committed to protecting the safety and well-being of our community. I am thankful for the swift response of our Officers in helping knock down the fire and also locating the suspect of this arson, Fond du Lac Police Chief Aaron Goldstein said in a statement to local news station WISN.Rep. Grothman has not issued a statement on his social media platforms like X, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram but told the local newspaper the FDL Reporter that hes not sure what happened exactly. I dont even know yet (what happened) other than somebody tried to set a fire over TikTok, said Grothman, who unlike some members of Congress, appears to have never had a TikTok account. The TikTok app went dark for U.S. users on Saturday night but came back online Sunday afternoon ET after incoming president Donald Trump said hell sign an executive order on Monday after hes inaugurated at noon that will delay the ban. Strangely, Trump signaled that he want the U.S. federal government to own 50% of the app, though its not immediately clear how that would work.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Matt Novak Published January 19, 2025 By Justin Carter Published January 19, 2025 By Matt Novak Published January 18, 2025 By Lucas Ropek Published January 17, 2025 By Matthew Gault Published January 17, 2025 By Lucas Ropek Published January 17, 2025

  • Helldivers Devs Hope the Movie Recruits A-List Cannon Fodder
    gizmodo.com
Earlier this month, Sony revealed its planning to make live-action movies for Horizon Zero DawnandHelldivers. The latter is a co-op shooter about space marines fighting aliens, and its not uncommon for sci-fi war movies to have big stars: your Tom Cruises, Chris Pratts, and the like. If it were up to execs at developer Arrowhead Game Studios, said movie would indeed bring in some big namesand then have them all die horribly. Arrowhead recently held a Q&A on the Helldivers Discord, and some players had questions about the movie. When asked by one player, CEO Shams Jorjani said the studio hopes for as many A-list actors as possible, as long as they all get killed violently immediately. After the movies announcement, fans made joke fantasy castings that included Pratt, Jack Black, and Adam Sandler as creatures or non-descript marines from the game, like a Bile Titan. Jorjanis comment has since spurred players to keep running with the joke, so now stars like Sean Bean, Aaron Paul, and Dwayne Johnson have been added into the cast mix. Got a star youd wanna see get got in this movie? Tell us in the comments! Less jokingly, Jorjani told another player that Arrowheads been kept in the loop on some stuff about theHelldiversmovie. But he and CCO Johan Pilestedt think the studios involvement in the film should only go so far. On Twitter, Pilestedt recently explained the developers are not Hollywood people, and we dont know what it takes to make a movie. Therefore we dont, and shouldnt, have final say. The amount of input game developers have on an adaptation varies: creators of Last of Usand League of Legends are heavily involved in those shows, while others have comparably less cooks in the kitchen. When it comes to the finished products quality, that also varies, and theres no hard science to determine how much creator input makes for a success in the eyes of both newcomers and longtime fans. It sounds like theHelldiversmovie is currently in its earliest stages, if Sony even goes ahead with making it. But given these games influences, it feels like youd have totryat adapting them wrongly. • TikTok Returns in the U.S. After Trump Promises To Delay Ban
    gizmodo.com
TikTok became available for users in the U.S again on Sunday after president-elect Donald Trump promised to sign an executive order that will delay a ban on the platform. TikToks app became unavailable for American users late Saturday in preparation for a law that took effect Jan. 19, the day before Trump will be inaugurated as president at noon E.T. In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service, the social media platform wrote Sunday on X. We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive. TikTok praised Trump in a warning posted Saturday night that users saw when they tried to open the app. And the social media app said in a statement Sunday that restoration of its service was a positive development for free speech. Its a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States, the ByteDance-owned company wrote. President-elect Trump, a billionaire authoritarian whos promised to target his political enemies, announced Sunday morning that he will be issuing an executive order that will ensure TikTok can operate in the U.S. while a deal is reached to figure out something long term.Im asking companies not to let TikTok stay dark! I will issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period of time before the laws prohibitions take effect, so that we can make a deal to protect our national security. The order will also confirm that there will be no liability for any company that helped keep TikTok from going dark before my order, Trump wrote Sunday morning on his social media platform Truth Social. Bizarrely, Trump signaled that his primary concern about having TikTok available on Monday was that he wanted people to be able to see him become president again. Americans deserve to see our exciting Inauguration on Monday, as well as other events and conversations, Trump continued. But the strangest element of Trumps announcement involved his apparent plans for how to structure a deal that would allow the app to continue operations in the U.S. The president-elect signaled the federal government might be taking some kind of ownership stake in the social media company, though details on how that might work werent provided. I would like the United States to have a 50% ownership position in a joint venture. By doing this, we save TikTok, keep it in good hands and allow it to say up. Without U.S. approval, there is no Tik Tok [sic]. With our approval, it is worth hundreds of billions of dollarsmaybe trillions, Trump wrote. The billionaire was clearly hinting at how lucrative this deal might be as a sign that he should both be praised and perhaps should see some kind of benefit for himself. Therefore, my initial thought is a joint venture between the current owners and/or new owners whereby the U.S. gets a 50% ownership in a joint venture set up between the U.S. and whichever purchase we so choose.Trumps relationship with everyone has long been known to be transactional, but its not entirely clear yet whether the incoming president will personally profit from the TikTok deal, as he has in so many other areas of life. Republican senator Tom Cotton from Arkansas wasnt necessarily happy with the way that things are going with TikTok, releasing a statement praising companies like Apple and Google for removing the app from their stores while saying theres no legal way for any timeline to be extended. We commend Amazon, Apple, Google, and Microsoft for following the law and halting operations with ByteDance and TikTok, and we encourage other companies to do the same. The law, after all, risks ruinous bankruptcy for any company who violates it. Now that the law has taken effect, theres no legal basis for any kind of extension of its effective date, Cotton said in a statement published online. But Cottons discontent may not amount to much now that Trump is taking office again, as laws are only real if theyre enforced. And the executive branch, which houses the U.S. Department of Justice, would be in charge of enforcing the TikTok ban or divest law. For TikTok to come back online in the future, ByteDance must agree to a sale that satisfies the laws qualified-divestiture requirements by severing all ties between TikTok and Communist China, Cotton continued. Only then will Americans be protected from the grave threat posed to their privacy and security by a communist-controlled TikTok.

  • Marvel Snap Gets Caught in Crossfire of the US TikTok Ban
    gizmodo.com
Last night on Saturday, January 18, the United States government made good on its promise to ban TikTok. The ban came from a recently renewed amendment from a Ukraine aid bill that gained bipartisan support, and seemed more likely as TikToks owner, Chinese tech giant ByteDance, refused to sell it off to a U.S. company. Users have been pretty stunned to see the ban enforced, in part because this affects more than just the one popular social platform. U.S. players of the popular mobile game Marvel Snapwere hit with a popup message last night (or this morning, if they checked) stating the card trading game was banned in the country. A law banning [our game] has been enacted in the U.S., the popup reads. Unfortunately, that means you cant use Marvel Snapright for now. Rest assured, were working to restore our service in the U.S. Please stay tuned! Like with TikTok, this appears to affect players who dont live in the U.S., butdo have an account based in the country, and the games app is no longer showing in the iOS or Android stores. Marvel Snapis published by Nuverse, which is a subsidiary of ByteDance. It, along with other apps (CapCut and Lemon8) and games (One Punch Man: The Strongest, Mission EVO) owned by the company, have similarly been banned in the country for the foreseeable future. At time of writing, Marvel hasnt commented on the outage, but developer Second Dinner called it a surprise to us and wasnt planned. The studio said the game isnt going anywhere, and its actively working on getting the game up as soon as possible and will update you once we have more to share. At the moment,Marvel Snapand TikTok players can only wait for incoming president Donald Trump to reverse the ban against ByteDance products he first called for by executive order back in 2020. Until then, theres always Marvel Rivalsor watchingSnapstreams. Want more io9 news? • Fearing AI Will Take Their Jobs, Workers Strategize for a Long Battle Against Tech
    gizmodo.com
The current frenzy around artificial intelligence has spread like a shockwave. It started among engineers inspired by a 2017 research paper. Next came venture capitalists eager to profit from a new boom. They were followed by government officials racing to impose regulations. Now its labors turn.More than 200 trade union members and technologists gathered in Sacramento this week at a first-of-its-kind conference to discuss how AI and other tech threatens workers and to strategize for upcoming fights and possible strikes. The Making Tech Work for Workers event was convened by University of California labor centers, unions, and worker advocates and attracted people representing dock workers, home care workers, teachers, nurses, actors, state office workers, and many other occupations. A key takeaway from the proceedings: Workers of all stripes are determined to fight during contract negotiations and amid day-to-day operations for the right to negotiate more control over how AI is deployed within companies. Union representatives detailed ways AI threatens jobs, from screenwriting to driving taxis to ringing people up as a cashier. It takes a toll on your physical and mental health when tech tracks your every movement, said Luis, an Amazon worker from Californias Inland Empire who asked CalMatters not to use his last name due to fear of retribution. He felt like he couldnt stop moving or get help from coworkers when lifting heavy objects. That led to back pain that made it hard to sleep at night, and feelings of depression and diminished self-worth.I just couldnt deal with being a robot, he said, describing why he quit. Later he returned to the job because he had no other opportunities. Amazon spokesman Steve Kelly responded that employees are encouraged to work with intention, not speed and can take short breaks at any time to use the restroom, grab water, stretch, or step away from their screen. In addition, theres nothing unusual about using cameras to help ensure employee safety, inventory quality, or protect against theftthis is common practice at nearly every major retailer in the world. Employees who have questions or concerns about any aspect of this technology or their jobs generally arent just permitted, but encouraged on a regular basis, to bring them to their managers and theyre provided several tools to support them in that process. The gathering comes as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to begin his second administration and shortly before a Feb. 21 deadline to propose bills for the current session of the California Legislature. Precisely how Trump will respond to issues related to tech and workers is unclear. He has made some promises that seem favorable to big tech, like vowing to cut regulations he sees as harmful to innovation and promising to repeal an executive order signed by his predecessor that put safeguards on AI. But he has also positioned himself as an advocate for blue-collar workers left behind by tech elites: Just last month he called automation harmful to workers. Observers have also been left baffled by where, exactly, the incoming president stands on issues like H-1B visas for foreign tech talent or how he might be swayed by high-profile adviser Elon Musk, the omnipresent tech billionaire.Participants at the conference did not focus much on Trump. Instead, they centered discussions on how to protect workers from tech that can exploit them or automate discrimination. Union representatives unanimously urged workers to negotiate how AI and other forms of tech are used in the workplace when bargaining. Many also urged workers to engage more on tech issues by considering how to use tech for organizing or pushing forthe establishment of committees where management must discuss tech with workers before implementation. The roughly 150,000 United Food and Commercial Workers union members folks who work at stores like Kroger and Albertsons and the 100,000 National Nurses Union members will both face key fights related to automation this year as they bargain new contracts. The grocery workers will challenge the role of self-checkout stands while nurses contest AI tools they say can influence their duty to care and prioritize profits for health care and insurance companies over patient health. Corporations have long marketed AI to consumers and investors as a technology that will transform the world for the better. But gatherings like the conference in Sacramento show that unions are also using AI as a way to galvanize workers to organize their workplace.Unions have a steep hill to climb to grow membership and worker power, said AFL-CIO Tech Institute executive director Amanda Ballantyne, but including AI in collective bargaining negotiations is key, because there are so many use cases for AI in the workplace and workers tend to have strong opinions about them since they are experts in their own jobs and know best the safety implications of a new tool. A number of union representatives argued at the conference that workers need to gain and exercise power to push back against the rollout of technology with the potential to exploit them, visit indignity upon them, or take their jobs. A report released earlier this year by the UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute found that 4.5 million Californians are in 20 industries labeled at high risk of job loss due to automation, and that more than half of high-risk workers are Latino. Automation that takes jobs away is a major concern for three out of four Americans, according to a Gallup poll taken last year, but AI that makes predictions about workers, manages workers, or attempts to track and quantify their every move is also a major risk, said UC Berkeley Labor Center director Annette Bernhardt. She previously told CalMatters shes less concerned about AI taking jobs than she is about algorithms used in the workplace treating people like machines. AI has the potential to reduce discrimination and improve worker health and safety but it also has the potential to drive job losses, help suppress worker organizing efforts, and intensify demands placed on workers, a phenomenon that led to higher injury rates at Amazon warehouses.SAG-AFTRA executive director and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said that AI underscores why its important for workers to organize, because doing so can force employers to negotiate their use of AI during contract bargaining rather than unilaterally deciding to introduce the technology in the workplace. But obtaining such contract clauses requires foresight by union leaders, who must craft a message that can resonate with workers and the public. Were up against the biggest corporate interests and the biggest political interests that you can imagine, and working together in unity is absolutely where our power comes from, he said. Especially because were going to have so many challenges on the federal level, in California, we can use public policy to advance collective bargaining and use collective bargaining to advance public policy.A lot of tech getting introduced in the workplace is just surveillance of workers, advocates said, and thats nothing new. Its the old boss with new tools, said California Labor Federation president Lorena Gonzalez. Three years ago, as an assemblymember, Gonzalez coauthored a law that prevents algorithms from denying workers break time or worker safety violations. Amid uncertainty of how the Trump administration will address union concerns around tech, Gonzalez told CalMatters last week that she is working with counterparts in other states, including Oregon, Massachusetts, and Washington, and Wisconsin to pass legislation to protect workers privacy in spaces like break rooms and bathrooms and ensure that they know when an employer is collecting data about them or monitoring job performance. The California Privacy Protection Agency is currently drafting rules that would require businesses to inform job applicants and workers when AI is in use and allow them to opt out of data collection on the job without consequence. California would become the first state to enact such rules but that regulation is still under negotiation. The California Civil Rights Department is also drafting rules to protect workers from AI that can automate discrimination. Gonzalez said she doesnt like to rely on such rules because they can take a long time to finalize and enforce, pointing to the fight to keep workers safe from hot workplaces, a battle thats gone on for the better part of a decade. Meanwhile, people like Amba Kak see opportunities for gains by workers against technological threats but said that it may require strategically picking the right battles. Kak previously advised the Federal Trade Commission and is executive director of the AI Now Institute, a nonprofit that researches the human rights impact of the technology. Seizing those opportunities requires paying attention to issues that can build bridges between labor and other actors in the tech justice movement. For example, the activity of data centers can bring together people concerned about the climate and labor and people in local communities who see data centers consume vast amounts of water and energy.Kak told CalMatters she plans to pay more attention to activity in state legislatures in places like California and New York, where lawmakers are already considering a bill that protects people from AI in a manner similar to Californias to Senate Bill 1047, a controversial bill requiring AI safeguards that Newsom vetoed last year. Labor has been at the forefront of rebalancing of power and asserting that the public has a say in determining how and under what conditions this tech is used, she said. • TikTok Is Officially Banned in the USA: Heres How a VPN Can Unblock It
    gizmodo.com

  • Skeleton Crews Finale Almost Had a Jedi Flashback
    gizmodo.com
The recent finale for Star Wars: Skeleton CrewJod Na Nawood. Growing up as a poor kid, he was taken in by a Jedi and trained in the ways of the Force. Hes been on the run ever since he watched her die, and it turns out we wouldve met her during the sequence. On Instagram, actor Yasmine Al Massri (who youve heard as Morana on Castlevania) posted photos of herself as Jods master, Jedi robes and doing some brief lightsaber training that wouldve presumably been her putting up a fight before her death. According to her, it was the shortest active job Ive done, but impactful nonetheless: after her single scene wrapped production, she recalled telling the Skeleton Crew team they just created the first Arab female Jedi.To Massris dismay, the scene wasnt part of theSkeleton Crewfinale, but shes taking it in stride. These things happen, she continued. It was the most meaningful [job] to the child in me. [] I cant not share my experience and feelings. Now that Jods officially confirmed to have been a Jedi-in-training and had a master at one point in his life, it raises some questions. Who between them was the Order 66 survivor, or could they both have escaped the Jedi Purge? Additionally, who is sheneither Skeleton Crews finale or Massris post name the character, and it feels like she should have one. If the show gets another season, maybe well learn more about her and Jods relationship, and how he grew from Jedi survivor to pirate with a lot of false identities. Want more io9 news?
