Sonic Racing CrossWorlds hands-on preview: It is time to move over Mario
Not to be outdone by his one-time rival, Sonic’s new racing game takes the fight to Mario with genuinely surprising mechanics we've not seen before in the genreTech20:00, 07 Jun 2025Where will you end up?Who doesn’t love a kart racer? The trouble is, they’ve started to fall into a pretty staid rhythm now. You battle it out for lap one, everything sort of settles down in lap 2, and then lap 3 can be similarly formulaic if you don’t get hit by a power-up or two. While Nintendo Switch 2's launch title Mario Kart World has moved to change this with a system that links tracks together, iconic hedgehog Sonic is doing something a little different with his return to karting. Not only does it make for much more chaotic racing, but there’s more going on under the hood than it first seems.Tracks are varied, making jumping from one to the other very excitingSonic Racing CrossWorlds initially starts off like most other kart racers. Players pick their character from a starting roster of 23 characters, pick their vehicle, and then head off. And, while the first lap plays out as you’d expect, whoever is winning gets to pick lap 2’s location, meaning racers drive through a Travel Ring and end up on a different track, before coming back for lap 3.Article continues belowGetting ahead of another vehicle so you can pick a track you know better for the next stage of the race is great, as are the ‘Rival’ you’ll be assigned at the start of each Grand Prix. Not only do these racers react more aggressively to you, but they’ll also offer unique dialog when you appear out of nowhere to overtake them, hit them with an item, or fall behind the pack. This track sees you travel through a DragonOnce the Grand Prix is done, there’s a chance to secure further points by racing across each track from the prior Grand Prix in a sort of three-lap sprint. In my limited playtime, I was locked alongside my rival for points before pulling out the win thanks to that final spring.More competitive racers may baulk at such randomness creeping into tracks they’ve rehearsed, but it’s a breath of fresh air for the genre and stops those middle laps feeling too predictable. Each vehicle can be customised furtherAside from the Travel Rings, it doesn’t hurt that Sonic Racing CrossWorlds is a fantastic racer in its own right.Drifting to earn a boost and pulling off tricks to zip past rivals is great fun, although it did take a moment to knock me out of my Mario Kart muscle memory.Vehicles fall into a variety of categories, and each has customisable paint jobs, too, letting you make each feel bespoke. Want a purple car for Big the Cat? Go for it. Looking to add some colour to Shadow’s vehicle? You can do it.There are also gadgets you can use to tie into your playstyle, like hoovering up rings from further away, or simply improving your smallest boost. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a hedgehog with a driver's licence! The game also brings back the “Land, Sea, and Air” transformation modes for vehicles, meaning one minute you’re driving, then sailing, and then flying. The latter is particularly enjoyable, letting your character of choice navigate jump hoops and tight turns, while there are secrets to find throughout each track to encourage replayability.Sonic’s video games feel like they’re in a pretty good spot at the moment, and CrossWorlds looks to be another fine addition.Article continues belowMuch will hinge on how fun its tracks are, but early signs are very, very promising that this will be a racer that shakes up the genre just as well as anyone else can.Previewed on PS5. Preview access provided by the publisher.

Summer Game Fest 2025 predictions: Everything we expect from Switch 2 to Splinter Cell
Geoff Keighley has promised a record-breaking number of publishers at Summer Game Fest this year, so we’ve rounded up what we think we’ll be playing in the coming monthsTech23:00, 05 Jun 2025We're so ready to step into Samus' boots againE3 might be long gone, but Summer Game Fest has replaced it. While Nintendo Switch 2 has just launched, and Sony has held its own State of Play event, tonight’s show is about as unpredictable as you can get. So, naturally, we’re trying to predict what we’ll be seeing. With everyone from PlayStation to SEGA, Xbox and even Nintendo making an appearance, we’re expecting big things from the showcase, which will be packed with titles for 2025 and beyond. While some are known quantities, like Borderlands 4, Little Nightmares 3, and the upcoming Bond game from Hitman developer IO Interactive, we’re still expecting plenty of surprises. Here’s everything we’re predicting for Summer Game Fest 2025.There are plenty of big namesWith Geoff Keighley’s events in both the Summer and December being key fixtures on the gaming events calendar, he’s able to pull off plenty of surprises. The Game Awards 2023 revealed Monster Hunter Wilds, while the following year showcased the first gameplay of Slay The Spire 2 and Split Fiction, as well as Elden Ring Nightreign and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. As for Summer Game Fest itself, the show last year featured Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 - all games which were released since then.Article continues belowWe’ve heard rumblings that Capcom’s Pragmata, revealed alongside the PS5 in June 2020, could be shown at the event following an indefinite delay in 2023. It’s just as well, since we have no idea what the game really is yet. We’re also very curious about what Nintendo could show. The Switch 2 is out, but only as of yesterday, so we’d expect a sizzle reel to show what the console is capable of, as well as another look at Donkey Kong Bananza.PlayStation is probably easier to predict since the company is launching Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding 2: On The Beach in just a few short weeks, and Geoff Keighley will likely find some way of getting the man himself on stage.SEGA has plenty to show, too. Sonic Racing CrossWorlds is still due this year, while the company has an ambitious plan to resurrect classic titles starting with Shinobi: Art of Vengeance and leading into Streets of Rage and Crazy Taxi.We tipped a Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 announcement for Sony’s State of Play, but we’re still waiting for more news on Kingdom Hearts 4.Pearl Abyss is still aiming to launch Crimson Desert this year, but we’re without a release date as yet, while the company is also working on its colourful DokeV which has been MIA for years at this point. While Microsoft is expected to appear, the company has its own showcase just two days later with a big focus on The Outer Worlds 2. As a result, we might just get a sneak peek at this year’s Call of Duty with more to come on Sunday. With Bungie’s Marathon hit by plagiarism accusations, Embark Studios has a great chance to get players onto Arc Raiders as an alternative. Speaking of Bungie, expect a gameplay trailer for Destiny 2: Edge of Fate.Elden Ring is coming to Switch 2Call us crazy, but we want a bunch of Switch 2 news. We want to see From Software’s Duskbloods, get a release date for Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, and maybe even a Metroid Prime 4 release date from Nintendo itself.Given the history of Monster Hunter on portable consoles, we’ve got everything crossed for the series to come to Switch 2, but coming off of the excellent Wilds, it’s perhaps unlikely.Naturally, we’ve always got our fingers crossed that we’ll see Silksong, but rumours have suggested that Team Cherry’s long-awaited Hollow Knight follow-up would be announced at Microsoft’s event if at all.As we said in our State of Play predictions, we’re also expecting to hear more about Resident Evil 9 by the end of this week, in some way, shape, or form. With The Division 2 getting what’s likely its final DLC recently, here’s hoping for The Division 3, which has been rumoured for a while. Or, maybe Ubisoft will finally share something about the Splinter Cell title it has in development.Article continues belowDid we get any correct? 'I got Nintendo Switch 2 early - here's what you need to know'
Switch 2 turned up on our doorstep this afternoon and here's what you can look forward to if you plug yours in at just past midnight tonight - including one warningTech21:32, 04 Jun 2025Updated 21:32, 04 Jun 2025Here's what Nintendo sent usAfter months of writing about the Nintendo Switch 2 daily, it was a bit of a strange feeling to have the console dropped off at my doorstep earlier today. While I had preordered, Nintendo sent out the console and some peripherals, so I'm in a position to tell you what you can expect if you're attending a midnight launch, or if you're currently queuing outside your store.Looking for a more detailed preview of the hardware? You can find that here, and we've also got hands-on impressions of Mario Kart World and Nintendo Switch Welcome Tour.Mario Kart World is Nintendo's big Switch 2 launch titleWhen powering on your Switch 2, you'll need to connect to the internet to download the all-important firmware update that turns it from a pricey paperweight into a nifty console. The console will also introduce you to some of its features and prompt you to add a MicroSD Express card.Article continues belowYou can complete the setup with any version of the Switch 2 controllers, and you'll be prompted to start a system transfer from your original console if you have one. We'd recommend doing so, because it'll transfer your saved data to your new system, but it does come with an inconvenience tied to our biggest Switch 2 bugbear so far: painfully slow download speeds.Logging into the console and updating the firmware took about 20 minutes, but downloads move glacially slow.Add to that the console trying to download everything from your Switch 1 at once, and I had to spend a few minutes closing downloads down.Even the more modestly-sized games like Puyo Puyo Tetris were dragging on my gigabit Wi-Fi, although I'd imagine it's down to the 'pipes being clogged' as far as servers go.Still, if you're planning to play anything tonight, you might want to stick to physical media for a bit.Article continues belowWhile the Joy-Con are great, I'm massively impressed by the Pro Controller. We'll have a full live blog running most of the day tomorrow to talk more about Switch 2 on its official launch day, but I'll be leaning towards the more traditional pad for my Zelda playthroughs and more. For now, though, I'm pretty pleased I have a physical copy of Mario Kart World to keep me going until Sony's State of Play tonight. Don't forget to check out our predictions. For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.

'F1 25 is a mix of realism and playability – almost like being on a real race track'
F1 25 is a near-perfect mix of realism and playability that offers much of the drama from the real-life sport and a sprinkling of fiction and, uh, Brad Pitt just becauseTech18:11, 02 Jun 2025This year's game looks better than everIn many ways, writing an F1 25 review should be the easiest of this year’s critical assessments. Codemasters is legendary for its commitment to digital recreations of automotive competition, and having the F1 licence means it’ll always be cutting-edge in terms of racers, tracks, and more.If you’re an F1 fan, you’ve almost certainly already bought it, and while non-fans of sports games will baulk at paying for a “roster update” each year, Codemasters simply refuses to coast, keeping its foot firmly on the gas and moving from last year’s podium finish to Championship-winning form with this year’s entry.Conditions can be treacherousLast year’s F1 24 was easily one of the most impressive games to look at on PS5 Pro, and while Codemasters had talked a good game about visual fidelity , I wasn’t sure it would be able to take much of a realistic step beyond. And yet, F1 25 is frequently stunning. In motion, it’s hard to see anything wholly new, but that’s more down to the speed at which you’ll be taking corners of meticulously detailed tracks. Slow things down a tad, though, and you’ll find things a little less sterile than they had been.Whereas F1 24 circuits felt a little too clean at times, there’s a little more dirt here and there, more wear on the track, and even correctly identified tree species in tracks that have been scanned via LiDAR.Article continues belowIt’s likely an ongoing process, with Bahrain, Miami, Melbourne, Suzuka and Imola getting the scanned treatment so far, but it’s an impressive taste of what’s to come and could mean upcoming games look even better. On track, the handling model feels much breezier. You can still crank up the difficulty by leaving the assists in the pits, but cars feel more responsive than ever. You’ll need that, too, because some tracks can be driven in reverse. You can still race, but you'll pick one of your stars to "follow" for the weekendThe crown jewel of this year’s entry, however, is My Team. The mode has always been solid, but lacking in ambition, but this year sees Codemasters really go to town on its underlying machinery. While you’ll no longer be some team owner/driver hybrid superstar like Tony Stark in Iron Man 2, that adds an interesting new flavour to the mode. You’ll start as boss of an existing team or form your own, and then hire drivers, work to improve your car, and try to woo sponsors.Because you’re no longer racing yourself, there are more magnanimous decisions to be made about car parts. Research costs time, manufacturing costs money, and then you’re left to decide which of your racers gets the added boost.Consistently upsetting one can see them look elsewhere, while you can plan for next season’s drivers right from the off, making a Lewis Hamilton-esque switch to a rival a pressing concern throughout the year. While much of My Team takes place in menus, they all feel dynamic enough to feel much more enjoyable than you might expect, and while it doesn’t get quite as deep as F1 Manager, it’s still full of potential. You can even sneak some star power onto the grid, too, taking the reins of Brad Pitt’s racing team from the upcoming F1 movie , or signing iconic former drivers to build a dream lineup. As an aside, I love that EA is experimenting with things like this in its career modes, especially since EA FC added Icons to its own version. Long may it continue.Konnersport are now vying for titlesAnother big return this year comes from Braking Point , marking its third instalment. The mode that essentially condenses a season’s worth of drama into playable chunks with a healthy dose of inspiration from Netflix ’s Drive to Survive is back as part of its “one season off, one season on” cadence. It’s packed with sporting cliches and no small amount of cheese, but it humanises a sport that can sometimes feel more focuses on cutting seconds off a lap than it can the drivers doing that work. After years of building a team, Konnersport is finally competing for the Championship, and players can switch between their driver roster to achieve different objectives, and there’s an alternative ending for those willing to commit.Article continues belowF1 25 is the best entry in years, with changes big and small piling up to offer a truly immersive and feature-packed title. My Team will get the plaudits, but Braking Point’s return and Codemasters’ continued commitment to realism shouldn’t be forgotten.Reviewed on PS5 Pro. If you've missed all the latest news, the Switch 2 is drastically more powerful than its predecessor while keeping the same form factor. It has a larger display with 1080p resolution, and can output 4K when docked–a first for a Nintendo console.Be sure to check back around launch for a whole host of Switch 2 coverage.Dune Awakening is an ambitious survival MMOReleased: June 10, Platforms: PCSurvival games are a Marmite kind of deal, but whether you love them or hate them, we'd recommend keeping an eye on Funcom's Dune Awakening.Players find themselves stuck on Arrakis, and will need to acquire resources, craft a base, and stay clear of Sandworms, bandits, and other players.Promising a huge, political endgame that sees players pledge allegiance to different factions, it could be a fascinating release for PC gamers.MindsEye looks impressive alreadyReleased: June 10, Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X and S, PCAnother June 10 launch, MindsEye comes from Build A Robot Boy–the studio helmed by GTA legend Leslie Benzies–and it's promising a near-future open-world adventure that looks gorgeous in motion. The game, which is published by Hitman devs IO Interactive, will also include a huge game creation toolkit. The idea is that players can keep building things for MindsEye, meaning there's almost no end to the fun.FBC Firebreak is a departure for RemedyReleased: June 17, Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X and S, PCThe ever-impressive Remedy Entertainment is releasing a surprising new co-op shooter set in the same universe as Control.Players will need to tackle all kinds of monsters with friends or strangers, while also having the option to use their own supernatural abilities to stem the tide.Early previews have been positive, and Remedy hasn't steered us wrong yet.Rematch offers 5v5 football actionReleased: June 19, Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X and S, PCYou can't beat a good football game, but we didn't expect one to come from the team that gave us martial arts adventure Sifu.Rematch is that game, and rather than giving players a birds-eye view of the action, they'll play as a single player in third-person.With even the keeper able to use some slick footwork, it could be the closest we get to a new FIFA Street. Is that who we think it is?Released: June 19, Platforms: PS5Article continues belowThere's not a lot to say about Death Stranding 2, purely because we know that whatever preconceived notions we have about the game will be shredded to bits with Hideo Kojima at the helm. The sequel to the post-apocalyptic adventure that was once a PS4 exclusive is only for PS5 players this time around, and it looks to be just as off-the-wall as its predecessor. For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.

Nintendo issues huge Switch 2 backwards compatibility boost as release countdown continues
A week away from launch, Nintendo has confirmed which Nintendo Switch games have been tested for Switch 2, and it's great news for anyone with a huge collectionTech11:31, 29 May 2025So close, and yet so farNintendo Switch 2 is just seven days away, and while some units are already out in the wild, we've had some questions about backwards compatibility. After all, Nintendo has constantly said the "most" of the Switch 1's huge library will be playable on Switch 2, with some getting free upgrades and some including paid additions.Others, including Fortnite, will work right out of the box, but now Nintendo has revealed a much more extensive list of games that willrun on the new console. Here's all we've learned.Nintendo Switch 2 can play the majority of Switch 1 gamesOver on Nintendo's support page for backwards compatibility, the company has tested 75% of third-party games released on Switch 1.Considering that's more than 15,000 games, that's impressive, and more are being tested every day.Of the games tested, Nintendo says 118 of them have "start-up issues" of some description, while a further 50 "start up on Nintendo Switch 2 but include some in-game compatibility issues”.These include Mega Man Legacy Collection, Fall Guys, and Saints Row IV: Re-Elected.As for games that can't be played on Switch, the list is slim and includes Nintendo's Labo Toy-Con VR kit and apps like Hulu or Crunchyroll.Games like Fitness Boxing, DOOM Eternal, and Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster are all expected to receive a patch before launch next week to improve compatibility.Switch 2 will play older gamesSome games will require the original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers, too, so don't get rid of those. These games include Ring Fit Adventure, Game Builder Garage, and WarioWare: Move It!Nintendo Switch Sports' leg strap accessory won't work with the Switch 2 Joy-Con, too."In addition to Nintendo Switch 2 games, Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released on the Nintendo Switch system," Nintendo explains."The Nintendo Switch 2 system's hardware is different from Nintendo Switch, and some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.""During testing, games are started and limited testing is conducted. Compatibility status may change if issues are found. We will update this page as necessary," it adds. For more on Nintendo Switch 2, be sure to check out how you can still get one at midnight without a pre-order, and when the first Pokémon game will arrive on the console.Article continues belowFor the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.

Monster Train 2 review: Hell will freeze over before we're done playing
Monster Train 2 is a superlative sequel that takes everything that made the first game great and amps it up with smart new systems and even more replayability - here are our thoughtsTech17:09, 27 May 2025Ready to get back on the track? There’s nothing quite like a good roguelike deckbuilder . Whether you’re into Slay The Spire, Inscryption, or Monster Train, you’re not short of options either. So, how does a studio brute force its way into the conversation? By dropping not only a sequel to one of the aforementioned holy trinity , but also by making it possibly the best example of the card-based genre in years.Monster Train 2 is that rare sequel that expertly weaves new ideas into the fine-tuned locomotive engine of its predecessor, all while keeping many of the original parts. The result is one of the most moreish games of 2025, and even the last half-decade.This time, we're working upwardMonster Train debuted back in 2020, and its appeal came from its much more expansive art style than its contemporary, Slay The Spire’s simpler art direction, as well as the fact that its ludicrously-addictive card-based combat loop works on multiple levels.Racking up the units to protect the top tier of your train added an element of positioning and a layer of tactility to combat, while also providing foes with an opportunity to outplay you.Article continues belowThankfully, Monster Train 2 doesn’t so much change that system as it buffs it to a shine while adding a whole host of small tweaks around it.There's a seemingly infinite amount of build diversityThis time around, your train isn’t headed for hell, but is instead sent speeding into the heavens as you plot your route and pick your battles, unlocking cards as you go and using them to see how long you can keep your violent voyage going. That simple change of direction from the deepest depths to the highest heights means you can now pick your crew from angels, demons, and everything in between, and it’s all done with just as much charmthan it was in the first game.Enemies arrive, and you funnel them through your train while protecting the heart of the engine with card-based attacks that you level up and collect over the course of a run. Do you go all out to protect the top level, or aim to wear down the foes at the base level first? Cards can be played on multiple levels, and that means there’s much more choice at play than in similar titles. It may look like Monster Train 1, but there's more going onWith cards to play, units to assemble, and many of them having unique interactions, it’ll be a long, long time before you’ve seen everything Monster Train 2 has to offer, which will be mana from heaven for anyone still logging into the first game five years after its launch. That’s before we get into more complex systems, too, like which items to grab and when, or whether your equipment cards are best served to power up your own cleaving commuters, or to be dropped onto your foes to debuff them. With primary and secondary factions to choose from, each with their own starting units and customisation options, Monster Train 2 is the kind of game one could feasibly start playing at 9 AM and keep chipping away at until the small hours of the next day. In fact, that’s exactly what happened more than once in my playtime, especially since it’s a model citizen on the Steam Deck.We won't spoil the surprise, but the clan variety is amazingWant to hoard gold to be able to splurge on reinforcements? The dragons are your best shout, but you can also use the Underlegion to essentially outnumber your foes with the power of, um, fungus. The Lazarus League, on the other hand, are like a hand grenade that’s just as liable to go off in your hand as it is to do damage to your opponents, bringing units back to life with randomised bonuses that can make or break a run.Mixing a pair of these factions together and attempting to essentially break the game’s carefully measured combat system with a mix of random card additions, buffs, and plain old luck is a rush that saw me racking up the runs night after night. Then there’s Endless Mode, which lets you take your custom deck from a winning run and keep testing it. In essence, you just keep going, battling until your Pyre Heart goes out, but with positive and negative modifiers to keep adding more and more layers to its delicious mix of mechanics. The VerdictArticle continues belowMonster Train 2 is a game that will sap your free time if you let it, and if you have a Steam Deck, we’d give it a 6 out of 5 if we could. It really is that good, that addictive, and that fun that we may struggle to go back to the incredible original–high praise, indeed.Reviewed on PC. 'Xbox Game Pass is finally hitting its stride but is it enough?'
Microsoft's subscription service, Xbox Game Pass, has grown into a must-have this year thanks to a whole host of big releases, but is it enough to help Xbox catch up to PlayStation?Tech13:00, 23 May 2025Game Pass is arguably more important than an Xbox console these daysIt’d be fair to say at times that Xbox’s strategy this console generation has been clear as mud. From its opening salvo of multiplatform releases on PlayStation and Switch, to other games being released day and date on other systems, and some even looking better on PS5 Pro, you’d be reasonably wondering if you need an Xbox at all.In fact, Microsoft agrees, with its “This is an Xbox” pretty much labelling everything except your toaster and the kitchen sink as a console of sorts. The Xbox as we know it is long gone, it seems, but in its place, Xbox Game Pass feels like it’s grown in momentum month after month .Is it enough to turn the tide? It’s hard to say.Halo Infinite marked a sort of 'false dawn' for Game Pass back in 2021Cast your mind back to late 2021. Microsoft released Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite in consecutive months, and it felt as though Xbox Game Pass was about to kick into overdrive.Article continues belowSadly, things went a little quieter after that, but now, years later, it feels Xbox Game Pass is poised to finally hit some kind of stride. It’d be fair to say that Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda and Activision Blizzard has left it with a studio portfolio that would make many envious, but it’s not really managed to line up its releases. Even Avowed, one of this year’s best games, was slated for last year before Microsoft nudged it to 2025.Still, as it turns out, having great games on your platform will get players through the door, and if you’ve got a PC then you’re in an even better position.Stalker 2 has been heavily patched since launchSeptember saw Frostpunk 2 arrive on Xbox Game Pass for PC, while October added Call of Duty Black Ops 6. November brought with it STALKER 2 on day one, and December saw the year out with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.Unlike 2021, though, Microsoft has kept things moving between calendar years. January kicked off with Ninja Gaiden 2 Black as a stealth release, along with GOTY sequel Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector. February added Avowed, March brought with it Atomfall, and April added South of Midnight, critical darling Blue Prince, and the day one release of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. All of these games are available on PS5, sure, but the cost would be astronomical to play all of them, and Microsoft still isn’t done.DOOM: The Dark Ages is on PC and Xbox, along with Monster Train 2, this month, while Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 remakes , Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, Gears of War: Reloaded, The Outer Worlds 2 and much more are still coming in 2025.It’s a frankly ridiculous list of games with more to come in 2026, and that’s saying nothing of freebies like in-game items for League of Legends, Overwatch 2, and more, as well as this week’s announcement of a huge retro game collection .ESO is still growing, even after a decadeOne of the biggest knocks against Game Pass in recent years has been the increase in price, and while there’s an argument to be made about Microsoft’s tiers making it harder to know if you’re getting a game on day one, Xbox Game Pass Core continues to grow.Core is cheaper than the Ultimate option that includes console and PC, but it does have a sizeable collection of games for budget-conscious players. The recently added Retro Classics are included, for example, as well as Bethesda hits like DOOM Eternal, Dishonored 2, and Fallout 4. For casual gamers, that might be enough. In fact, there’s a whole host of games included that could consume your week if you let them, like State of Decay 2, The Elder Scrolls Online, and Stardew Valley. That means there’s likely to be something for everyone while you wait for more recent releases to trickle down.Game Pass has really come into its own this yearMost of my friends have a PlayStation 5, so if a game doesn’t have cross-play, that’s where I play my games—Game Pass or no.I do wonder how many feel the same, and see the appeal of Game Pass but simply don’t have the inclinationto pick up a second console to play games cheaper in the long run, especially with so many coming to PlayStation in the future.Given Microsoft now has the keys to Warcraft, Overwatch, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Gears of War, Halo, Forza and so much more, I wonder if there’s ever a scenario where they start to rebuild walls between their franchises.Sure, Call of Duty will keep making money hand over fist on as many platforms as possible, but would the next Dishonored be worth putting on all platforms when you could keep it to the Xbox platform as an added incentive?Microsoft can’t be happy with being in second place for another console generation, and while I do wonder if Sony will eventually reckon with rising budgets by starting to move its own games elsewhere, I’d wager we’ll get one more Xbox generation at most before the company goes the way of SEGA.Article continues belowWhat do you think? Does Game Pass interest you? Are you always likely to play where your friends are? And can Microsoft keep up this momentum? For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.

February added Avowed, March brought with it Atomfall, and April added South of Midnight, critical darling Blue Prince, and the day one release of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. All of these games are available on PS5, sure, but the cost would be astronomical to play all of them, and Microsoft still isn’t done.DOOM: The Dark Ages is on PC and Xbox, along with Monster Train 2, this month, while Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 remakes , Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, Gears of War: Reloaded, The Outer Worlds 2 and much more are still coming in 2025.It’s a frankly ridiculous list of games with more to come in 2026, and that’s saying nothing of freebies like in-game items for League of Legends, Overwatch 2, and more, as well as this week’s announcement of a huge retro game collection .ESO is still growing, even after a decade(Image: Bethesda Softworks/ZeniMax Media )One of the biggest knocks against Game Pass in recent years has been the increase in price, and while there’s an argument to be made about Microsoft’s tiers making it harder to know if you’re getting a game on day one, Xbox Game Pass Core continues to grow.Core is cheaper than the Ultimate option that includes console and PC, but it does have a sizeable collection of games for budget-conscious players. That means there’s likely to be something for everyone while you wait for more recent releases to trickle down.Game Pass has really come into its own this year(Image: Microsoft)Most of my friends have a PlayStation 5, so if a game doesn’t have cross-play, that’s where I play my games—Game Pass or no.I do wonder how many feel the same, and see the appeal of Game Pass but simply don’t have the inclination (or money) to pick up a second console to play games cheaper in the long run, especially with so many coming to PlayStation in the future.Given Microsoft now has the keys to Warcraft, Overwatch, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Gears of War, Halo, Forza and so much more, I wonder if there’s ever a scenario where they start to rebuild walls between their franchises.Sure, Call of Duty will keep making money hand over fist on as many platforms as possible, but would the next Dishonored be worth putting on all platforms when you could keep it to the Xbox platform as an added incentive?Microsoft can’t be happy with being in second place for another console generation, and while I do wonder if Sony will eventually reckon with rising budgets by starting to move its own games elsewhere (and not just to PC), I’d wager we’ll get one more Xbox generation at most before the company goes the way of SEGA.Article continues belowWhat do you think? Does Game Pass interest you? Are you always likely to play where your friends are? And can Microsoft keep up this momentum? For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.0 Comments 0 Shares 0 Reviews -

Super Mario fans gobsmacked after realising how video game legend got his name
Nintendo's mascot is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time, but fans have only just discovered the unusual backstory behind Super Mario's nameTech16:08, 22 May 2025The origin of Mario's name goes back to a rent dispute in the 1980sSuper Mario has been enchanting video gamers for decades, yet it appears many have only just stumbled upon the origins of the iconic plumber's name. For anyone with a passing interest in gaming, Mario is a household name, the protagonist of the famous Super Mario series and the face of Nintendo. The Mario franchise stands as the top-selling video game series ever, boasting over 830 million units sold – including a staggering 430 million from Super Mario titles alone. Whether at costume parties or Halloween bashes, Mario's likeness is unmistakable across the globe. However, the backstory behind his moniker remains a curiosity for many. First making an appearance in 1981's Donkey Kong, the character initially went by "Jumpman", but it wasn't until the follow-up, 1982's Donkey Kong Jr, that he received the memorable name Mario, paving his way to international acclaim. The website Quora saw an outpouring of intrigue when one user posed the query: "Why is Mario called Mario?" Knowledgeable fans were quick off the mark to clarify, shedding light on a fascinating tidbit. The beloved character's namesake was none other than Mario Segale, an American businessman and notable figure in real estate development.Segale was the proprietor of a warehouse in Tukwila, Washington, which Nintendo used as a rental space during the early 1980s. When Minoru Arakawa, the founder and erstwhile president of Nintendo of America, fell behind on the rent for the premises, Segale made a memorable appearance to "angrily remind" him to pay – inadvertently providing inspiration to the Nintendo team.Article continues belowOne Quora user expressed their thoughts: "Could have been Shigeru Miyamoto, but I'm going with former Nintendo of America president Minoru Arakawa as a means to mock their then-landlord Mario Seagale, which in turn, turned Jumpman into Mario when the character became the antagonist in Donkey Kong Jr."Another individual elaborated: "Mario is called Mario because he was named after Mario Segale, who was the landlord of Nintendo of America's office, after barging in on a company meeting to demand payment of overdue rent."One Nintendo exec was said to have named Mario after their angry landlordIn Jeff Ryan's 2011 book, Super Mario: How Nintendo Conquered America, he delved into the origins of the iconic name, recounting how Segale had nearly "jumped up and down himself" in fury over the delayed rent, emulating Jumpman’s own antics. He wrote: "Around this time, the Tukwila warehouse's owner showed up in person to angrily remind Arakawa about the rent. As the legend goes, the owner, Mario Segale, interrupted a conversation over what to call Jumpman. Segale said his piece, and he grew so incensed he almost jumped up and down himself."After the landlord departed, having delivered the threat of eviction, someone suggested the name Mario. It was a bit of a laugh, given that both men sported moustaches. But the name was well-received by all.Article continues below"If Mr. Segale had only shaved that morning, who can say what name the character on the screen might have been given? Super Carlos? Super Ivan? Super Stavros? Would that alternate-universe name have made a difference in Nintendo's success? Under any other name, would Mario play as sweet?"Mario will next appear in Mario Kart World for the Nintendo Switch 2, which will be released as a launch game for the new console on June 5th.

When Minoru Arakawa, the founder and erstwhile president of Nintendo of America, fell behind on the rent for the premises, Segale made a memorable appearance to "angrily remind" him to pay – inadvertently providing inspiration to the Nintendo team.Article continues belowOne Quora user expressed their thoughts: "Could have been Shigeru Miyamoto, but I'm going with former Nintendo of America president Minoru Arakawa as a means to mock their then-landlord Mario Seagale, which in turn, turned Jumpman into Mario when the character became the antagonist in Donkey Kong Jr."Another individual elaborated: "Mario is called Mario because he was named after Mario Segale, who was the landlord of Nintendo of America's office, after barging in on a company meeting to demand payment of overdue rent."One Nintendo exec was said to have named Mario after their angry landlord(Image: Charly Triballeau/AFP via Getty Images)In Jeff Ryan's 2011 book, Super Mario: How Nintendo Conquered America, he delved into the origins of the iconic name, recounting how Segale had nearly "jumped up and down himself" in fury over the delayed rent, emulating Jumpman’s own antics. Under any other name, would Mario play as sweet?"Mario will next appear in Mario Kart World for the Nintendo Switch 2, which will be released as a launch game for the new console on June 5th.0 Comments 0 Shares 0 Reviews
