• 24 Small Kitchen Island Ideas That Think Big
    www.elledecor.com
Your kitchen island isn't just another surface to pile mail on (though we've all been guilty of that). It's the place for morning coffee and midnight snacks, for homework and for dinner prep, and where every party somehow ends up, no matter how carefully you've arranged the living room seating. It deserves some extra love. When square footage is at a premium, every part of your kitchen island needs to work overtime. The key is maximizing every vertical inchthink open shelving that displays your prettiest cookbooks, pull-out drawers that house everything from wine bottles to mixing bowls, and clever end panels that flip up for extra counter space when you need it. "One trick I love is incorporating hidden storage," Matthew Coates of Coates Design Architecture + Interiors tells ELLE DECOR. "I've designed islands with pull-out shelves for spices, slim drawers for utensils, and even a sliding cutting board that conceals a small compost bin underneath."The secret to making a small island feel expansive? It's all in the visual tricks. "For material choices, I've learned that lighter colors, minimal patterns and reflective surfaces work wonders in small spaces," shares Joyce Huston, lead interior designer at Decorilla. "One of my favorite combinations is a white quartz waterfall countertop with subtle veining, paired with mirror finish stainless steel back panel. This creates an illusion of the island floating in space while bouncing light around the kitchen."Whether you're working with a postage stamp-sized space or just prefer a more intimate cooking setup, these small kitchen islands prove that good design, like good things, comes in small packages.1Petite and polishedTim LenzThis pint-sized peninsula in an elegant Greenwich Village apartment proves that small spaces can pack a powerful design punch. The rich brown quartzite countertop looks gorgeous against crisp white cabinetry, while offering a perfect perch for casual dining. The clean lines and thoughtful proportions maximize functionality without sacrificing an ounce of style, making this compact corner designed by ELLE DECOR A-List firm Pappas Miron an exemplar of smart space planning.2Rolling in styleWilliam AbramowiczIn this Bedford, New York home, wheels are the move. Mobility is another game-changer. So long as you dont need electricity, adding wheels to an island allows it to double as a serving cart or extra prep space wherever you need it, says Coates. I once worked with a family that loved to entertain, and their rolling island became the star of the showit could go from kitchen prep to dining table setup in seconds.Advertisement - Continue Reading Below3Bold and practicalRicardo Labouglevibrant kitchen designed by Lorenzo Castillo, a custom yellow island topped with a butcher block anchors the space, offering both storage and style. Bringing functionality to vertical space is essential and can be done by adding shelves or cabinets under the island, says Cody Brown of Bridges Brown Interiors.4When in doubt, round it outSimon UptonA crammed kitchen is frustrating. Accidentally bumping your side into the corner of the kitchen island? Infuriating. In this example, a long and narrow island was crafted by my clients father, bringing a very personal heirloom to the kitchen, designer Darlene Molnar tells us. • What Is Art Nouveau Architecture? Here's Everything to Know About the Design Movement
    www.housebeautiful.com
Jump to:Art Nouveau, or "new art" in French, is an architectural and artistic movement that emerged in the late 19th century and lasted through World War II. Known for its flowing lines, organic forms, and intricate ornamentation, Art Nouveau marked a departure from more traditional styles, such as neoclassicism and Gothic Revival, in favor of developing an entirely new style that blended art, design, and technology in groundbreaking ways. While new technology and materials were used to create Art Nouveau works, there was still a great emphasis on craftsmanship and originality. It remains one of the most easily identifiable design styles, thanks to its distinctive look. Here's what you need to know about Art Nouveau architecture and its impact on design history.Related StoriesWhat Is Art Nouveau Architecture?Alexander Spatari//Getty ImagesArt Nouveaustyle apartment buildings in Barcelona, Spain.Art Nouveau architecture is a design style defined by dramatic, nature-inspired ornamentation, often with whiplash curves and flowing lines that look like vines. Instead, it aimed to create something entirely newhence the movement's name. It became the first design movement of the modern era.The History of Art Nouveau ArchitectureThe Art Nouveau movement began in Europe as a response to the Industrial Revolution and the dominance of historical revival styles. Artists and architects sought to create a design language that celebrated originality and craftsmanship while still embracing new technologies and materials. While the movement began in the late 19th century across France and Belgium, its popularity flourished globally after the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, where Art Nouveau artists and designers displayed their works in the style.Outside of France and Belgium, Art Nouveau took on different names. Art Nouveau came first, and it's best known for its organic, flowing forms. Art Deco came later, and it's defined by geometric shapes, bold lines, and a focus on modernity and luxury. While both movements are considered modern, and they used new technology in their creation, Art Nouveau celebrates the beauty of the natural world, while Art Deco embraces the speed and glamour of the machine age. What is Art Nouveau beyond architecture?Art Nouveau was not limited to architecture; it flourished in the fine arts, graphic arts, and decorative arts, too. When Apple announced iOS 18 in June at WWDC, the company unveiled some new features for HomeKit and the Home app including support for vacuuming robots. However, this feature wasnt included in the first releases of iOS 18, and Apple has now quietly confirmed that HomeKit support for robot vacuum cleaners has been postponed until 2025.HomeKit to support robot vacuum cleaners next yearPreviously, the Home app webpage on Apples website said that support for vacuuming robots in HomeKit would arrive with a future iOS 18 update later this year. • Brazilian company still believes it owns the iPhone trademark as it awaits trial
    9to5mac.com
As weve reported here in the past, Apple is facing an intriguing legal dispute in Brazil when it comes to the iPhone trademark as a local company called Gradiente claims to have patented the name long before Apple. As the case still awaits a final judgment, Gradiente still believes that it created the first iPhone.Apple disputes the iPhone trademark in BrazilIn an interview with the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S. Paulo (via MacMagazine), Gradiente CEO Eugnio Staub told how he feels about the dispute between his company and Apple. Staub complained about even Brazilian people accusing Gradiente of taking advantage of the situation to try to get money out of Apple, which he says is not the case.People look at this story and say Gradiente is a Brazilian company, so it must be a scam, right? the executive said.Staub showed the journalist an old unit of the phone called the Gradiente Iphone, which was launched in Brazil in 2000 seven years before Apples iPhone. He also showed some leaflets used to promote the phone at the time. We sold 30,000 [units] in a few months, Staub said. However, due to a dispute between Gradiente and another Brazilian company, the Iphone trademark was only granted to Gradiente in 2008, a year after Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone. At the time, Gradiente was no longer selling phones, but that changed in 2012 when the Brazilian company announced an Android smartphone called the Gradiente Iphone.Unsurprisingly, Apple has asked the Brazilian regulator to invalidate the trademark of Gradiente, which ended up losing the exclusive rights to the Iphone trademark in Brazil in 2013. Both companies have been battling in court ever since and are awaiting a final judgment from the Supreme Court. Even so, Gradientes CEO says he has nothing against Apples iPhone. He [Steve Jobs] launched a sensational product. Hes a genius of our generation and of several generations. But that doesnt take away from the fact that we launched a similar product before with the same name, Gradientes CEO argues. The country [Brazil] doesnt recognize many of its own innovations, he adds.A date for the final trial is yet to be announced.Best Cyber Monday deals on Apple productsAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • Infamous Billionaire Accused of Running Bizarre Human Birthing Scheme
    futurism.com
Image by Getty / FuturismGeneticsAn infamous insurance billionaire has been accused by several women of operating a bizarre "baby project" to build a giant white family. In a wide-reaching expos,Bloomberg reports that North Carolina insurance tycoon Greg Lindberg operated this scheme by manipulating young women into donating eggs to him and signing over their parental rights in exchange for millions of dollars. One of these women, who was identified only by the pseudonym Anya, is the biological mother of a five-year-old boy who she says she hasn't seen in four years because her now-ex-boyfriend, Lindberg, has used the contracts she signed to keep him from her. After divorcing his wife and losing custody of his first three children, the disgraced insurance executive and father of 12 has, per several people familiar with his natal ambitions, become obsessed with having an ever-increasing vassal of progeny. In particular, he was said by these sources to want children who could never be taken from him hence having the women sign their parental rights away. With an army of lawyers and well-paid in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics on his payroll, most of Lindberg's reproductive scheming has apparently been legal due to the fertility industry's lack of oversight.Along with the women whose eggs he purchased, Lindberg also allegedly ran a massive network of surrogates and had at least two female assistants one of whom also carried his child run the logistics of this deeply weird baby-making operation. The donors, however, seemed to be central to the campaign given that it was their genetic material the billionaire con was interested in. Many were models when they met Lindberg, and almost all had blonde hair and either blue or green eyes."I wanted to meet these folks in person, at least take them to dinner, get to know them," the billionaire bragged to Bloombergbefore cutting off contact. After that, he filed a lawsuit accusing the outlet of defamation, slander, and interfering in his relationships. Notably, it does not seem that he denied the claims about his baby project, and instead seemed proud of it.Per interviews with some of these women, Lindberg seems to have done more than take them to dinner. Anya, as mentioned, considered him her boyfriend, and he was said to be "courting" multiple women for egg donation at once. In at least one case, two women involved in this natalist nightmare had their eggs retrieved from the same clinic within just a few days of each other.During his first prison stint for bribery and conspiracy convictions that were thrown out on procedural grounds, the magnate pressed his staffers to keep his businesses both baby and insurance afloat. His employees balked at the directive, but ultimately followed through, and the births only increased after he was released in 2022.After pleading guilty in November to a $2 billion fraud and money laundering scheme, it's likely that Lindberg will be headed back to prison and the women who were ensnared in his creepy birth web will likely have to keep living without seeing their biological kids.More on natalist weirdos: Elon Musk's Daughter Disgusted by His Revolting "Incel" Tweet About Taylor SwiftShare This Article

  • ChatGPT Crashes If You Mention the Name "David Mayer"
    futurism.com
We still have no idea why.David Who?Netizens were baffled to find that OpenAI's ChatGPT refused to acknowledge the existence of the name "David Mayer."Ask the chatbot about the name and it gives a puzzling reply: "I'm unable to produce a response."Then the chat abruptly ends, forcing users to open a new window to keep using the assistant.Frustratingly, OpenAI has yet to comment on the matter and questions are still hard to come by. The most prominent personality who goes by that name is David Mayer de Rothschild, a British adventurer and environmentalist who presumably doesn't have any bones to pick with an AI chatbot. He also happens to be the heir of the Rothschild banking dynasty, which has spawned plenty of far-fetched conspiracy theories. The incident highlights just how little we know about how these large language models operate, what kind of content they've been trained on,and what limits are imposed by their makers. We've seen plenty of examples of AI chatbots hallucinating facts, failing at simple tasks, and even encouraging dangerous behavior meaning that the tool getting hung up on a simple name isn't even the most unusual behavior we've come across.Shmavid ShmayerAs we wait for official word from OpenAI Futurism has reached out for comment many social media users have been busy digging around for some answers. For instance, AI investor Justine Moore found at least six more names that triggered a similar response, including several individuals who have filed General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) "right to be forgotten" requests in the EU. In other words, the quirk may have to do with their efforts to have their online presence erased.Others have suggested that the name David Mayer may have been blocked due to the existence of a Chechen ISIS memberwho used the name as an alias. As 404 Media reports, ChatGPT also breaks when it's asked about two law professors named Jonathan Zittrain and Jonathan Turley.Intriguingly, Zittrain wrote a piece in The Atlanticabout the need to "control AI agents now."One user even changed their name to David Mayer in ChatGPT, which led to the tool refusing to acknowledge their new name.Is the name being blocked because of OpenAI's guardrails, which were designed to protect individuals' privacy? Did David Mayer whoever he may be file legal documents with the AI company? It's a mystifying bug that underlines how much of a black box ChatGPT really is. And it underscores a constant lesson with AI products: don't take any of their answers at face value.More on ChatGPT: Lawyer Submits Anti-AI Document That Appears to Have Been Created Using AIShare This Article

  • SmokeLoader Malware Resurfaces, Targeting Manufacturing and IT in Taiwan
    thehackernews.com
Dec 02, 2024Ravie LakshmananMalware / CryptocurrencyTaiwanese entities in manufacturing, healthcare, and information technology sectors have become the target of a new campaign distributing the SmokeLoader malware."SmokeLoader is well-known for its versatility and advanced evasion techniques, and its modular design allows it to perform a wide range of attacks," Fortinet FortiGuard Labs said in a report shared with The Hacker News."While SmokeLoader primarily serves as a downloader to deliver other malware, in this case, it carries out the attack itself by downloading plugins from its [command-and-control] server."SmokeLoader, a malware downloader first advertised in cybercrime forums in 2011, is chiefly designed to execute secondary payloads. Additionally, it possesses the capability to download more modules that augment its own functionality to steal data, launch distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and mine cryptocurrency."SmokeLoader detects analysis environments, generates fake network traffic, and obfuscates code to evade detection and hinder analysis," an extensive analysis of the malware by Zscaler ThreatLabz noted."The developers of this malware family have consistently enhanced its capabilities by introducing new features and employing obfuscation techniques to impede analysis efforts."SmokeLoader activity suffered a major decline following Operation Endgame, a Europol-led effort that took down infrastructure tied to several malware families such as IcedID, SystemBC, PikaBot, SmokeLoader, Bumblebee, and TrickBot in late May 2024.As many as 1,000 C2 domains linked to SmokeLoader have been dismantled, and more than 50,000 infections have been remotely cleaned. That having said, the malware continues to be used by threat groups to distribute payloads through new C2 infrastructure. This, per Zscaler, is largely due to numerous cracked versions publicly available on the internet. The starting point of the latest attack chain discovered by FortiGuard Labs is a phishing email containing a Microsoft Excel attachment that, when launched, exploits years-old security flaws (e.g., CVE-2017-0199 and CVE-2017-11882) to drop a malware loader called Ande Loader, which is then used to deploy SmokeLoader on the compromised host.SmokeLoader consists of two components: a stager and a main module. While the stager's purpose is to decrypt, decompress, and inject the main module into an explorer.exe process, the main module is responsible for establishing persistence, communicating with the C2 infrastructure, and processing commands. The malware supports several plugins that can steal login and FTP credentials, email addresses, cookies, and other information from web browsers, Outlook, Thunderbird, FileZilla, and WinSCP."SmokeLoader performs its attack with its plugins instead of downloading a completed file for the final stage," Fortinet said. "This shows the flexibility of SmokeLoader and emphasizes that analysts need to be careful even when looking at well-known malware like this."Found this article interesting?
