  • Jaguars new EV is as wild as its new logo
    www.fastcompany.com
Jaguar has finally unveiled the car at the center of its viral campaign: an electric four-door GT concept car named Type 00 (pronounced Type Zero-Zero). But the carshown in bright pink and sky blue during Miami Design Weekisnt just a car. Its the centerpiece of a controversial effort by Jaguar to rebrand the 89-year-old automaker as it enters the EV age.Two weeks ago, the British automaker rolled out new branding and marketing leading up to the reveal. Jaguar had a new, modern logo, and a colorful, fashion-forward visual language to match. The launch sparked a polarizing reaction across social media. Critics found the ad (which curiously never showed a car) and the companys new visual identity downright confusing. Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted on X: Do you sell cars?[Image: courtesy Jaguar]A new blueprint for Jaguar EVsThe brand calls the Jaguar Type 00 the blueprint for its next generation of electric vehicles and, indeed, it looks nothing like Jaguars of the past. In fact, it hardly looks like anything else on the road. The car ditches a rear windshield and has a decidedly un-aerodynamic silhouette with a broad nose and elongated hood. The car shelves the brands long-standing leaper hood ornament in favor of a circular brass badge with the initials J and R.[Image: courtesy Jaguar]The new look has critics questioning whether the car is taking the modernist concept to a misguided level. We understand our history clearly, Richard Stevens, Jaguars director of design, said at the debut of the pair of Type 00 prototypes. There are times in a brands life when you have to make a bold step.[Image: courtesy Jaguar]Ripping up the rule bookRawdon Glover, Jaguars managing director, says the automaker is returning to its original ethos, when it prized value over volume. Chasing volume hasnt gone well for the British heritage brand, which suffers from an aging lineup and a lack of new products. Until the arrival of the Type 00 EV (said to go on sale in 2026), the brand is culling its portfolio to a single model, the F-Pace SUV. Glover says the redesign will help Jaguar stand out in the increasingly crowded EV market, noting, We will effectively rip up the current rule book of EVs.[Image: courtesy Jaguar]Jaguar plans to phase out its internal combustion engines for battery-electric vehicles by the end of the decade, and its setting a high bar for the first model under its retooled identity. The automaker says that the 1,000-horsepower car will be able to travel up to 430 miles on a single charge and add up to 200 miles of range in 15 minutes when plugged into a DC fast charger. While the colorful cars are concepts, the production model is expected to retain design cues from the prototype, with its long hood, sweeping roofline, fastback profile, and 23-inch alloy wheels. The only trace of the leaper icon is etched into a brass ingot on the fender that protects the side camera mirrors embedded behind it.Inside, the cabin features nontraditional materials including brass and travertine. Three hand-finished brass lines run the length of the interior, with a central, 10.5-foot brass spine that splits a pair of floating instrument panels.[Image: courtesy Jaguar]Early data suggests that Jaguars controversial campaign has succeeded in enticing car shoppers. Auto Trader reported on Monday that interest in Jaguars has spiked following the hotly debated rebrand.Getting attention in todays world is not always easy, Gerry McGovern, Jaguars chief creative officer, said onstage during the reveal. When Jaguar was at its best, it created the E-Type and XJS, he added, citing two of the brands most storied 20th-century models. At our very best, we have never conformed.

  • The internet is freaking out because ChatGPT wont say the name David Mayer
    www.fastcompany.com
ChatGPT users are getting error codes every time they type the name David Mayer into the generative AI chatbot, leaving many confounded on who it could be and why the platform isnt recognizing the name.A Reddit user who posted to the r/ChatGPT subreddit six days ago appeared to be the first to notice that ChatGPT wouldnt (or couldnt?) generate a response to the name. The user asked who is david mayer? The chatbot said it was unable to produce a response. Since then, savvy users have been trying to get OpenAIs ChatGPT to acknowledge the name through a range of creative attempts, to no avail.Given that this has blown up on social media, its not exactly surprising that a number of theories have already been thrown around. A quick search of David Mayer on Google will lead you to David Mayer de Rothschild, a member of the prominent Rothschild family. But ChatGPT will easily provide you with information on the British environmentalist if you type in his full name, so its not likely that this is the David Mayer were looking for.Another social media theory is that the name David Mayer is associated with a Chechen ISIS member, whose name has caused confusion in the past. The association with a terrorist organization could have caused the platform to block his name. That, however, is unlikely since ChatGPT will provide you with a list of notable figures associated with different terrorist organizations if prompted. (OpenAI didnt immediately respond to Fast Companys request for comment.)It could also be that a David Mayer filed a right-to-be-forgotten request under the EUs General Data Protection Regulation, which allows users to pull their presence from the internet, thanks to the coalitions strict privacy laws. Under the landmark act, people can request certain personal information be removed online if its been deemed inadequate or irrelevant.Or, this is just all some weird glitch. This isnt OpenAIs first brush with strange answers. The generative AI tool famously has responded to prompts in Spanglish for no apparent reason, and once conjured up an image of a Hulk-like man in response to a prompt asking its image generator to show a guy wearing an XXL T-shirt.

  • Jaguar unveils concept car as "pure expression of new creative philosophy"
    www.dezeen.com
British automaker Jaguar has revealed images of its electric concept car, the Type 00, two weeks on from the launch of a rebrand that made waves online.Unveiled last night at Miami Art Week in a series of renderings, the Type 00 concept car is supposed to embody Jaguar's new creative philosophy of "exuberant modernism" with a design that the company sees as defying electric vehicle conventions. The exterior of the car marries a sweeping, fastback rear with a boxy and angular front end and a panoramic roof that is said to have "body-harmonising glazing".Jaguar's Type 00 is the first car design shown in association with its new brand visionBoth the front and rear of the car make use of the "strikethrough" a new linear graphic motif that hides full-width tailights at the rear while the classic image of the leaping jaguar has been sidelined from the front or rear of the car in favour of the rounded letterforms of the new wordmark. The "leaper" instead appears discreetly on the side of the car, where it is laser-etched into a brass ingot that deploys to reveal rear-facing cameras. The concept car includes the new wordmark on the front of the car"Type 00 is a pure expression of Jaguar's new creative philosophy," said Jaguar Land Rover chief creative officer Gerry McGovern. "It has an unmistakeable presence. This is the result of brave, unconstrained creative thinking, and unwavering determination.""It is our first physical manifestation and the foundation stone for a new family of Jaguars that will look unlike anything you've ever seen. A vision which strives for the highest level of artistic endeavour."A linear "strikethrough" motif hides rear tailightsJaguar chief exterior designer Constantino Segui Gilabert added that it the concept car was a "dramatic presence" that channelled British creativity and originality."Jaguar is no place for ordinary," he said. "When you see a new Jaguar for the first time, it must have a sense of awe, of never having been seen before. Type 00 commands attention, like all the best Jaguars of the past."Read: "The future Jaguar is offering feels baffling rather than visionary"Inside the interior, the Type 00 is characterised by three materials: brass, travertine stone and wool-blend woven textiles. Three lines of brass run the length of the interior, one along each of the doors and one down the centre forming a "spine", while the stone appears like a plinth for the seats.Perhaps most unusually, there is an interactive experience called Prism based around these materials. The inside of the car features brass, textiles and travertine stoneUsers can pick one of three totems one made of brass, another travertine and the last alabaster to place inside the centre console to tailor the mood of the interior, including elements such as ambient lighting, soundscape and screen graphics. The experience is meant to invite users to reflect and appreciate simple sensations."We have three key materials brass, travertine stone and textiles and the way we use these materials represents bold pieces of art and creates a unique atmosphere," said Jaguar chief materiality designer Mary Crisp.Users can place a "totem" in a slot to change the interior moodAs with the exterior, there is a focus on subtle or hidden technologies, with screens that glide across the dashboard, powered stowage areas that slide open on demand and a live display replacing the rear view mirror. The Type 00 was presented in two colours Miami Pink and London Blue. The name of the concept car is meant to hark back to the classic naming convention used for historical models like Jaguar's E-Type, while the first zero references zero tailpipe emissions and the second represents that this is car zero in a new lineage. The leaping jaguar symbol appears within a strikethrough graphic on the side of the vehicleJaguar has positioned its rebrand as a "complete reset" and aims to reveal its first reimagined production car, an electric four-door GT, in late 2025. It will also open new "brand stores" around the world as part of this push.Jaguar was widely mocked when it revealed its rebrand on 18 November, particularly for a video advert that included diverse human models but no cars.In a Dezeen opinion column on Dezzeen design writer Sophie Tolhurt said it was "baffling" and suggested the company was "leaning on others' visions of the future" rather than finding its own.The post Jaguar unveils concept car as "pure expression of new creative philosophy" appeared first on Dezeen.

  • Swivel chair uses repurposed retro Vespas for parts
    www.yankodesign.com
I am not a fan of scooters in a sense that I will never get on one. But whenever I see a Vespa, I am tempted to go back on that promise (until I remember how scared I am of two-wheeled vehicles) just because its very pretty and stylish. Now if I could have this aesthetic on something that I can actually use, then I would be happy.Designer: Bel & BelThe Scooter Chair is a swivel chair that repurposes parts of vintage Vespas to create a piece of furniture that may be as stylish as these luxury scooters. Each piece is handmade and can be customized to how you want it to look so it is also a luxury chair and may be more expensive than your regular, office swivel chair. But at least you can say you have the most stylish chair in your office if you get one. Aside from being stylish, it is created to also be comfortable and sturdy since you will probably sit on it at least 6 hours a day. The seat is also ergonomic with its foam and upholstery finished with ribbed seams. It also has an adjustable height piston and a reclining mechanism for times when you need to rest and relax. The customizable options include the color of the exterior structure, the type and tone of the upholstery (natural or synthetic leather), type of base (fixed or with wheels). You can also add some extra details to make it more luxurious like chrome-plated armrests, logos on the back, intermittent riders, or an original 8 wheel and sideband. Of course all of this means youll have out a bit more compared to regular swivel chairs. The post Swivel chair uses repurposed retro Vespas for parts first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Zeal Lifestyle Walker brings aesthetic sensibilities to a functional tool
    www.yankodesign.com
Walkers are usually purely functional to help those who need walking assistance, whether due to old age or injury. But there are those who prefer not to use it for various reasons, including the fact that its just functionally designed and may not be aesthetically pleasing. But what if you create walkers that are stylish and still fully functional? Designers: Josh King and Georgia WilliamsThats what the creators of the Zeal Lifestyle Walker are trying to create, bringing their previous design experiences from companies like Powell industrial and Dior. They want to position this product as a luxury consumer goods experience instead of just the usual end-of-life experience for mostly the elderly. They created something that will perform what its meant to do while also bringing an appealing design. The cables of the walker are inside of the frame unlike most of the assistive devices. You also have a baring system for the steering and shock-absorbing wheels. If a part malfunctions, they will send a replacement and it can be replaced by the owner with their allen keys that come with the original walker. It also comes in five pastel colors instead of the usual clinical colors that walkers come in. You can choose from sage, onyx, chalk, thistle, and blush. You can even customize some of the elements like the wheel caps and seats in the colors that you want. Its also just 5.9 kg so its pretty light. The creators are hoping that the Zeal walkers will appeal to those who prefer a nicer looking assistive tool.
