I guess games are only about 50 years old, so it is a lot, but I cant remember a time when there wasnt PlayStation and the way the industry is organised, and has been for years, it feels like PlayStation is such an integral part of it.Its hard to pretend that Sony is at their best at the moment, which makes the anniversary kind of awkward, but theres no doubting the significance of that original console and Sonys contribution to gaming as a whole.Hopefully the last two years will be seen as a minor blip in the future and well start to see Sony get back to their old self next year. I dont want to see the PlayStation 6 yet, but Id be lying if I pretended I wouldnt get it anyway. Using it on a 55 OLED the visual improvement in resolution is significantly noticeable on the likes of Gran Turismo 7. However, the biggest upgrade I have seen is on Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 in multiplayer.That thing runs so smooth and fast its incredible. Played a few games then jumped onto my Xbox Series X just to see if I could see a difference and it really is night and day. The Xbox Series X feels half as slow and almost jerky in comparison, even though that is running at 120Hz too.Would I have noticed it before? Probably not. But once you have experienced gaming running that fast and smooth you really would struggle to go back. A few years back, the star of this years Oscar hopeful Anora played Amber in the fifth Scream film. In the sequel (simply titled Scream), Amber is eventually revealed to be not just one of the two Ghostface Killers, but the one who killed Dewey, David Arquettes character from the original Scream. It was a big deal, one that Madison didnt quite grasp at the time. I have to be honest, when I did the film, it sounds naive, but I wasnt so aware of the huge fan base that the franchise has, that Ive now been able to discover, Madison told Collider Ladies Night. Screamand horror fans and people who love horror films are the best people ever, but I really naively went into it. Only three charactersSidney (Neve Campbell), Gale (Courteney Cox), and Dewey (Arquette)survived the original Scream films so killing one was a huge surprise. And for it to be Dewey specifically was very impactful. Hes a character who to that point was seen as almost invincible, having survived all manner of stabbings and other attacks. Its a quality that deeply endeared him to the audience. Fans of the trilogy took the loss hard and, apparently, some even blamed Madison.I remember being kind of sad because I was like, Oh, such a great character. Itll be sad to see him go. And then I realized afterward the heartbreak that so many people felt, she said. People have come up to me, and theyre like, I hate that this happened. Im mad at you. And Im like, Im so sorry, I didnt write the script! I didnt want to do it. In our opinion, killing Deweyor at least one of the legacy charactershad to happen for the Scream torch to be properly passed onto this new generation. And though that has since been fumbled around in some terrible ways (Campbell dropping out of part six, Melissa Barrera being fired from part seven, etc.), raising the stakes by killing someone important was the right call. We imagine it has to happen again soon too.Madison can currently be seen in Anora; the Scream franchise, with Campbell and Cox returning to co-star, will be back next year. Want more io9 news? Whats OnePlus been up to lately? The lesser-known Android brand has put out impressive hits these past few years, from flagships to foldables and even an update to its remarkable tablet. The companys next big to-do will be the OnePlus 13, which will launch in the U.S. and Canada in January 2025. The 13th-generation flagship, launching in OnePluss 11th year of business, will come in three colors: Midnight Ocean (blue), Black Eclipse (black), and Arctic Dawn (white). The blue variant of the OnePlus 13 will be the brands foray into micro-fiber vegan leather design.Android brands like Motorola have already attempted thisfad. (At least LG opted for genuine leather with the G4, RIP.) More importantly, unlike its predecessors, the OnePlus 13 will actuallybe water resistant. It is the first OnePlus device to secure an IP68 + IP69 rating, meaning its jacuzzi-resistant and can withstand higher water temperatures and pressurized water. The OnePlus 12, launched at the beginning of 2024, was set at IP65. A teardown had reported that it could withstand more than that initial rating, which gave nerds the justification they needed to get pedantic about the OnePlus 12s water resistance. But this time, its the real deal.The OnePlus 13 is already available in China, but whether the specifications will match the phones sold in the U.S. and Canada is unclear. OnePlus launched its flagship in China in October. Its one of the first Android handhelds worldwide to feature Qualcomms Snapdragon 8 Elite processor. It has 1TB of storage and runs OxygenOS 15, based on Android 15. The maximum memory offerings have also been increased from 16GB RAM to 24GB RAM, which overseas OEMs have been toying with to bump up AIs usefulness on the phone. OnePlus did not clarify the day it plans to launch the OnePlus 13. It has only teased that it will be available globally next month. Theres also the question of whether it will follow up with a OnePlus 13R in other markets, like how the OnePlus 12R launched this year. The R variant is a truncated version of the marquee flagship at a more attractive price.If the OnePlus 13 is truly going to launch with an absurd amount of memorylikely to help facilitate Qualcomms AI promisesthen Id hope there was an offering for users who dont want to shell out that much cash. Also, more RAM hasnt exactly endeared OnePlus to North American audiences, at least according to its market share, even if it is one of the things enthusiasts have appreciated about the brand all this time.
