Great Yarmouth Town Hall is a municipal building on Hall Plain in Great Yarmouth, in Norfolk, England. It is the meeting place of Great Yarmouth Borough Council and is a GradeII* listed building. The town hall was designed by John Bond Pearce in the Queen Anne Revival style, with terracotta facings and a 110-foot-tall (34-metre) clock tower with a lantern above. It was opened by Edward, Prince of Wales (later King EdwardVII), on 31May 1882. The building served as the headquarters of Great Yarmouth County Borough Council for much of the 20th century and has continued to operate as the local seat of government following the formation of the enlarged borough council in 1974. • Maxon releases Redshift 2025.2
    www.cgchannel.com
Thursday, December 5th, 2024Posted by Jim ThackerMaxon releases Redshift 2025.2html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd"Maxon has released Redshift 2025.2, the latest version of the GPU renderer. The update adds new nodes for varying materials in a scene, new non-photorealistic rendering options, and support for GPU denoising across NVIDIA, AMD and Apple Silicon hardware. For VFX and animation work, studios get a USD Command Line Rendering tool for running Redshift on a render farm without other DCC software installed.New nodes for randomly varying materials across scene objectsNew features in Redshift 2025.2 include Random Color Switch and Random Material Switch. The nodes vary the materials applied to a set of objects within a 3D scene, with Random Color Switch randomizing colors and textures, and Random Material randomizing entire materials. Both come with Color Jitter options for additional random variation. You can see examples of their output in the release thread on the Redshift forum, which showcase their potential applications for motion graphics work.Updates to non-photorealistic renderingRedshifts new non-photorealistic rendering toolset gets another update, adding a new set of Backfacing controls to the Contours shader. They make it possible to render separate contour outlines for the back-facing edges of an object, helping to create blueprint and X-ray render effects. It is also now possible to control more precisely how contours are drawn around overlapping and intersecting objects in a scene.GPU denoising supported on AMD, Apple and NVIDIA hardware via OIDN 2.3In addition, Redshift now uses OIDN (Open Image Denoise) 2.3 as the default render denoiser. The change improves denoising speed, and means that denoising is now supported on the GPU on all compatible hardware: AMD and NVIDIA GPUs, and Apple Silicon chips.Redshift RT, Redshifts interactive render engine, gets a new Global Light Sampling option, improving performance on scenes with many lights.New USD Command Line Rendering tool for running Redshift on render farmsFor studios using Redshift in USD-based production pipelines, another major change in Redshift 2025.2 is the new USD Command Line Rendering tool.It reads USD files and renders them to disk, making it possible to run Redshift headlessly on a render farm, without the need to have a DCC application like Houdini or Maya installed. There is also a new Redshift Lite installer: a smaller, faster-downloading and faster-to-copy installer, intended for use on web-connected devices.Updates to the integration pluginsCinema 4D users get an update to the Substance 3D Material, including new texture placement options and support for triplanar projection without the need to add any triplanar nodes to the shader graph. The 3ds Max, Blender, Houdini and Maya plugins get bugfixes.Price and system requirementsRedshift 2025.2 is compatible with Windows 10+, glibc 2.28+ Linux and macOS 13.3+.The renderers integration plugins are compatible with 3ds Max 2018+, Blender 3.1+, Cinema 4D R25+, Houdini 20.0+, Katana 4.5+ and Maya 2018+ (Maya 2022+ on Linux). The software is rental-only, with subscriptions costing $46/month or $264/year. • What Is Mocha Mousse, the First-Ever Shade of Brown Chosen as Pantone's Color of the Year?
    www.smithsonianmag.com
Pantone is betting that Mocha Mousse will reflect next year's trends. Pantone Color InstituteAs 2025 fast approaches, Pantone has officially selected its latest color of the year: While 2024 was all about Peach Fuzz, a soft pinkish-orange hue, next years color is Mocha Mousse, a warm and indulgent brown. This is the first time in the 25-year history of Pantones color of the year that theyve chosen a shade of brown, which is kind of a big deal, says the New York Times Vanessa Friedman in a conversation with fellow reporters and editors. I admit, my mind went immediately to comfort eating.Colors are often associated with particular emotions or sensations, and Pantone is betting that the new hue will be a predictor of next years trends. In a statement, the company describes Mocha Mousse as an evocative soft brown that transports our senses into the pleasure and deliciousness it inspires. A swatch of Mocha Mousse Pantone Color InstituteIts a beautiful color to look at. We think of tasting it, and know its going to be wonderful on the tongue. We think of the smell of chocolate in the oven, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, tellsArchitectural DigestsMocha Mousse is a far cry from punchy stand-out tones that have proliferated in recent years, such as Barbie Pink or Brat Green (though neither was named color of the year). Instead, Pantone says the new color evokes buttery leathers or rich flavors. The overriding theme as we went into looking for this years color was this whole idea of harmony, Laurie Pressman, the Pantone Color Institutes vice president, tellsUSA Todays Anna Kaufman. We have enough going on outside of us. Were looking for things that are softer and things that are lighter.Pressman adds that Mocha Mousse is inspired by little treat culture, which involves prioritizing small joys throughout the daysuch as a cup of coffee or a piece of chocolate.Pantone has been announcing colors of the year since 1999. To determine which hue will be chosen, an international team examines trends connected to fashion, design, travel, technology, the art world and the entertainment industry. Pantone says that the color "nurtures with its suggestion of the delectable quality of cacao, chocolate and coffee, appealing to our desire for comfort." Pantone Color InstituteThis year, Pantone is already working with a variety of international partners to bring Mocha Mousse to life: Companies like Motorola, Post-it and Joybird are releasing products designed using the color. Pantone will also be hosting events connected to the color in cities like New York, Shanghai and Mumbai.Still, only time will tell whether Pantones selection will accurately match the zeitgeist. The Times Stella Bugbee has doubts, asking: Does the Pantone color of the year actually reflect any reality? After all, how much did Peach Fuzz truly mirror the trends of 2024?For her part, Pressman thinks the color of the year can also respond to the present moment, in addition to reflecting it.Its emblematic of a snapshot in time, and its giving people what they feel they needthat that color can hope to answer, she tellsNPRs Emma Bowman. Its us taking the temperature: Whats taking place in the world around us, and how does that get expressed into the language of color?Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.Filed Under: Art, Arts, Coffee, Designers, Food, Graphic Design, Pop culture, Trending Today, Visual Arts

  • Hundreds of Sea Turtles With Hypothermia Are Washing Up in Cape Cod, Cold-Stunned as Temperatures Drop
    www.smithsonianmag.com
New England Aquarium staff treat a cold-stunned sea turtle. New England AquariumAfter a long, mild fall, New Englanders are not the only ones shocked by the sudden arrival of winter temperatures.Hundreds of sea turtles are now washing up on Massachusetts beaches, cold-stunned and suffering from life-threatening conditions including hypothermia, pneumonia, dehydration, sepsis or traumatic injuries, according to a New England Aquarium statement published on Monday. Members of the Massachusetts Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary have been rescuing the afflicted turtles at Cape Cod Bay and taking them to the aquariums sea turtle hospital in Quincy. No new wounds, but there was a big chunk out of his shell from something obviously in the distant past, Bruce Beane, a sea turtle rescuing volunteer from Chatham, tells the Cape Cod Times Zane Razzaq, describing the Kemps ridley sea turtle he found on Ryder Beach shortly after midnight Monday morning. He couldnt quite walk but kept trying.Cold-stunning events for sea turtles are expected around this time of the year. Sea turtles are cold-blooded, meaning they cant regulate their own body temperatures, and they thrive in oceans between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, per the Independents Julia Musto. They reach northern waters by hitching a ride on the warm Gulf Stream in May and June, but during the fall some become trapped behind the hook-shaped Cape Cod peninsula, especially when strong winds prevent them from migrating back to warmer waters for the winter. The cold waters make the turtles weak and unable to feed or swim, which in turn can leave them vulnerable to issues, including disease, starvation and boat-caused injuries. As of earlier this week, the hospital workers have treated a seasonal total of 257 live sea turtles: 214 Kemps ridley turtles, 39 green turtles and four loggerhead turtles. Upon arrival, the reptiles go through a physical exam, bloodwork and X-rays, with some requiring subsequent treatment for weeks or months. Certain cases even call for an ultrasound or an epinephrine shot to stimulate their heartbeat, according to the Cape Cod Times. When they come in here, the main thing that we need to do is give them fluidsbecause theyre dehydrated, and then also antibiotics as well, because the vast majority of them do get pneumonia, Melissa Joblon, director of animal health at the New England Aquarium, tells WCVBs Todd Kazakiewich. The turtles are then slowly transitioned into warmer and warmer waters, until theyre cleared to be released again. At the end of the day, getting these turtles back to the wild is what we are doing and what we want, saysAdam Kennedy, the New England Aquariums director of rescue and rehabilitation, to Rodrique Ngowi and Patrick Whittle of the Associated Press (AP). We want them back in the ocean. A critically endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtle being treated at the New England Aquarium hospital. Vanessa Kahn / New England AquariumUnfortunately, however, cases of cold-stunned turtles are rising.Around 2010, the aquariums rescuers would take in 38 to 40 turtles on average. Now, their annual average is just over 400 turtles, Kennedy tells the Independent. Most of those are Kemps ridleys, the worlds smallest sea turtle species, which is critically endangered.Experts say climate change is playing a role in this increase. Rising ocean temperatures push sea turtles north during warm months, which increases the chance of them getting stranded in the fall. According to NASA, 90 percent of global warming is happening in the oceans, rather than on land, as the oceans absorb excess heat. The warming of the Gulf of Maine over the years is now allowing more and more turtles to get into Cape Cod Bay, Kennedy tells the Independent.Normally the numbers werent very high years ago, he adds to the AP.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.Filed Under: Animals, Atlantic Ocean, Climate Change, Conservation, Global Warming, Oceans, Reptiles, Sea Creatures, Turtles
