  • PepsiCo can be sued over Gatorade protein bars marketing, judge rules
    www.fastcompany.com
PepsiCo can be sued for marketing its Gatorade protein bars as good for you though they have more sugar than protein and more sugar than typical candy bars, a federal judge ruled. In a decision on Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Casey Pitts in San Jose, California said three self-described fitness enthusiasts leading a proposed class action plausibly alleged that PepsiCos marketing and labeling was deceptive.Neither PepsiCo nor its lawyers immediately responded to requests for comment. Not all protein bars are equal in nutritional benefits.PepsiCo was accused last September of violating federal and state consumer protection laws by creating a health halo around Gatorade bars, including assurances they help muscles rebuild, are used by the pros and are backed by science.According to the lawsuit, the bars are actually fortified junk food with 29 grams of sugar, including 28 grams of added sugar more than the American Heart Associations recommended 25 gram daily limit for women and just 20 grams of protein. The plaintiffs said excess consumption of added sugar is linked to high rates of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. They said they wouldnt have bought Gatorade bars or would have paid less had they understood their nutritional character, and are seeking unspecified damages.PepsiCo called the deception claims implausible because it did not market the bars as healthy or low in sugar, especially for flavors such as Chocolate Chip and Cookies and Cream.Pitts, however, said reasonable consumers might be unable to readily interpret the sugar content on labels, and be misled by PepsiCos self-proclaimed science-backed claims. The judge also agreed that PepsiCo can make health- and protein-content claims consistent with federal regulations. He said, for example, that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not consider sugar a disqualifying ingredient when making health claims.Maia Kats, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said they welcomed the decision and would continue pursuing their claims.PepsiCo is based in Purchase, New York. Its dozens of brands also include Fritos, Lays, Mountain Dew and Ocean Spray. The case is McCausland et al v PepsiCo Inc, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 23-04526.Jonathan Stempel, Reuters

  • General Assembly creates "comforting and quiet palette" for Manhattan apartment
    www.dezeen.com
Design studio General Assembly has used a wide material palette to transform an apartment on New York City's Upper West Side, decorating it with marble and travertine stone and adding wood for a lighter feel. The studio completely transformed the layout of the 3,050-square-foot (284 square metres) flat, which was designed for a young family.Social spaces are located at the centre of the home"The floorplan has been completely reimagined," General Assembly co-founder Sarah Zames told Dezeen."We moved all the walls and most of the plumbing in order to better accommodate the needs and lifestyle of the clients we felt it was important to organize the spaces based on the way they used the space."A travertine side table contrasts a wooden table in the living roomOne side of the flat was designed to be quieter and family-focused and houses the bedrooms and family room, while social areas can be found at the centre of the apartment.Guest spaces are contained in a third area, which was designed using warmer materials and has a more intimate scale. The bedrooms are located on a "quieter" side of the flatLocated in an early 20th-century stone building by Italian-American architect Gaetano Ajello, the studio drew on the surrounding architecture when designing the apartment interior."We were inspired by the grandness of the New York pre-war building," Zames said."We loved its deep columns and beams and wanted to work in a way that honored these kinds of details while balancing them with softer textures and quieter moments."The kitchen features a marble islandGeneral Assembly worked with many different materials for the apartment, whose walls are clad in Venetian plaster in a nod to the fact that it's the material that would have been used for the original walls."We chose to finish many of the spaces with Venetian plaster because it created a subtle shadow and depth on the walls and ceilings," Zames explained.Read: General Assembly upgrades apartment inside brutalist Manhattan tower"We liked the way it reflected the natural and decorative lighting without overwhelming the space the movement and texture of the wall is so minimal, that on first glance you may not realize that it is even plaster," she added."But, as you watch the day progress, the light shifting becomes more apparent."Wood was used throughout the flatThe studio decorated the kitchen and bathrooms with dramatic marble surfaces and also placed a side table in solid travertine in the living room."We felt that stone, a material that lends itself to the nature of the pre-war building, was such a natural choice for this project," Zames said."We wanted to emphasize its weight, designing voluminous pieces and detailing to emphasize these qualities."Brass and metal details add texture to the living roomTo contrast the stone, wood was used for much of the furniture and for the sliding doors leading into the kitchen."The wood was just as important in the design because it provided a counterpoint to the heaviness of the stone and the architecture of the building," Zames said."Not only was the wood lighter in color, but the details in the wood finishes feel lighter to the touch and slightly more delicate."General Assembly added built-in features to the apartmentThroughout the flat, built-in shelves and cabinets maximise storage and reference the original design of the flat.To create the right ambience within the apartment, General Assembly used earthy colours for the interior."We drew predominantly on earthy hues complimented by jewel-toned accents," Zames said."We wanted to go with a comforting and quiet palette that evoked feelings of permanence. We always use natural and living materials in our projects, wherever possible so many of these finishes will patina over time and add further to the depth of the design."Swirly marble clads one of the bathroomsPieces by independent designers were also used for the space to give it more character and personality."The clients were really open to bringing in more independent designers, many of whom we also carry at our shop,Assembly Line," Zames said."That gave us the ability to do a lot of customization and freedom in how we designed and outfitted the space."General Assembly has previously updated an apartment inside a brutalist Manhattan tower and decorated a Bergen Street apartment with brass. The photography is by William Jess Laird.Project credits:General contractor: ALL ConstructionStructural engineer: Jim Moore and AssociatesA/V and lighting: Fiks Consultants for AV and Lighting InfrastructureUpholstery & window treatments: Fernando Guaman for Custom Upholstery and Window treatmentsThe post General Assembly creates "comforting and quiet palette" for Manhattan apartment appeared first on Dezeen.

  • Fighting Through Mental Struggles: Incredible Renderings Created with Only a Pencil
    www.core77.com
From a young age, artist Kohei Omori was diagnosed with OCD and struggled in school. He has described his obsession with detail as a disadvantage that makes everyday life difficult; and while he was able to gain an equivalency diploma after dropping out of high school, he was not able to make it all the way through art school. After dropping out, he became obsessed with a nut and a bolt, and began drawing them. Using only a pencil, this is what he produced: His sister posted it to Twitter, and unsurprisingly it went viral.Other work Omori has produced: This one in particular blew me away, where he nails the fonts traveling over a curved surface: He posts process videos on his Instagram, like this one:The online attention hasn't always been helpful; Omori recounts someone commenting "You should have just taken a photo." And as his symptoms worsened, he stopped drawing altogether and resolved to burn his drawings. Luckily Kazuomi Kishimoto, a supporter of Omori's work and the Director of the Setouchi City Museum of Art, intervened; he convinced him to let the museum display his drawings, rather than Omori turning them into ashes. The exhibition was held earlier this year. Omori sells prints of his work here, and you can keep up with his stuff on X or Instagram.

    www.yankodesign.com
When we talk about modern architecture these days, you instantly get a vision of tall glass skyscrapers! Modern architecture is characterized by skyscrapers and glass structures. However, a growing trend is slowly making its place in the world of architecture, and that is Concrete architectural designs. Concrete structures have a unique appeal to them. Raw, rustic, and organic, these real and unfiltered architectural structures immediately catch your eye. If you love concrete buildings, then you will approve of the Shire!Designer: Atelier Matias MosqueraDesigned by Atelier Matias Mosquera, the Shire is a one-of-a-kind and exceptional home that beautifully merges into its surrounding landscape. The home is self-sufficient in terms of power, water, and food. The home is inspired by the Shire by Tolkiens iconic books, as its name suggests. It is tucked away in a rural space in Buenos Aires and is built mainly from concrete. The surrounding landscape is lush and green, which perfectly complements the greenery on top of the home. The greenery provides insulation from the heat and cold, while wooden slats offer shade from the sun as well. The interior is made up of exposed concrete and wood, including the bathroom which contains a unique stone-like bathtub. The home occupies around 200 sq m and houses three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a library area, and a bathroom. It is surrounded by lush and detailed landscaping, which includes a swimming pool, as well as multiple pathways that let you walk on top of the structure.Instead of buying and throwing goods away, the idea is to produce, consume as needed, and then recycle, said Atelier Matias Mosquera. There would be no more garbage since the system would be self-sufficient. It generates its own electricity, heating, water, and, above all, food. The home runs off-grid as well since it is powered by solar panels, which are linked to a battery array, which makes sure the lights are on even when the sun isnt shining too bright. It features a rainwater capture system which can be connected to the water tanks and a vegetable garden, to offer sustainable food production. The Shire was built to help the owner live near nature, providing a much-needed break from the hectic city life. The post This LOTR-Inspired Concrete Home Is Self Sufficient & Perfectly Merges With Its Surrounding Landscape first appeared on Yanko Design.

    www.home-designing.com
This natural villa designed by Growto Design is inspired by the forms of nature. It seamlessly blends the indoors with the outdoors, so much that the lines between the two remain blurred. The architects have incorporated organic shapes and natural materials to create a living, breathing space. One that feels like an extension of the surrounding environment. The living room in this villa perfectly captures an organic vibe. The color palette is a mix of slate gray and light beige. The low-to-the-floor furniture creates a grounded feeling, while the furnishings provide some much-needed functionality. A ceramic floor vase at the far end adds curved forms to the interior. The living room features a large glass window with sliding doors. The absence of window treatments gives a boosting view of the outdoors showing a stunning tree and green grass. The black hardware for the door factors in luxury.Behind the sleek but grand sofa is a staircase. Light, textured wood for the staircase makes a statement in the space. The sofa cushions sit on a similar wooden base, tying the space together. Simultaneously, the glass railing for the staircase keeps the overall look understated and light. The open floor plan in this villa adds to the feeling of openness. At the far end, a dining table hosts residents in a nature-inspired ambiance.AdvertisementThrough the large windows, sunlight enters to highlight the natural features in the space. That is, a piece of rough stone setting the base for the wooden steps. The kitchen area features a vast wooden backdrop. The kitchen island uses stunning marble, creating a head-turning statement. The black-and-brown leather chairs make the space look expensive, while the round table factors in organic forms. The backdrop in the dining area features a massive painting featuring a lush green view with waterscapes. The accent chair in the living room cleverly mixes wood and a cane back. This adds a traditional touch reminiscent of the outdoors. The workspace in this villa features a dark brown table with plenty of flat surface area to place essentials. This is paired with an ergonomic chair. The wooden bookshelf covering the wall adds visual interest as well as a natural touch. It also provides room to assemble books paired with decor accessories.Any interior can do with a punch of color. And this natural villa achieves the purpose with a massive play of hues in the artwork.A sleek bed and side table add functionality to the bedroom, while pendant lights flanking the bed illuminate the space. The large piece of artwork forms the focal point. Especially because it is paired with an accent chair and wooden console table.Another bedroom in the villa is an affair of earthy red and cream. The window offers boosting views, and the olive green curtains add a natural touch indoors. For more regular updates from Home Designing, join us on Facebook.
