  • Influencers explain how Kamala Harris campaign won TikTok
    www.fastcompany.com
A social media phenomenon is taking place over on TikTok, and it could have huge implications for the 2024 election. For the last three-plus weeks, Kamala Harris official campaign account has been grabbing the attention of millions of users, posting videos to trending sounds and memes at a rapid pace with a level of sarcasm and humor that feels far more organic than her predecessor. That approach has injected a fresh dose of enthusiasm into the presidential race; its making campaign content . . . fun again? It has developed such a personality and such a brand thats an asset to her, and its fun to follow, and it sparks joy, says V Spehar, the podcaster and creator of the @underthedesknews account, which boasts more than three million TikTok followers.Within a week of Harris team taking over President Joe Bidens campaign operations, the teams TikTokKamalaHQ, officiallyreportedly quintupled in followers. As of Thursday morning, the account has 3.6 million followers and routinely receives millions of views on each post. It has almost 80 million total likes (a figure that includes past Biden content).Thats because, according to Spehar, Harris campaign is the first to understand parasocial relationships in the TikTok era. Theyre acting as an authentic TikToker, Spehar tells Fast Company. They are not acting just as a campaign, which is sort of one-sided.The channel, for example, often reposts other users videos. The creators behind the original posts may then go on to create even more content (i.e., KamalaHQ just reposted me!), which may in turn prompt yet more users to check out the KamalaHQs account. The Harris campaign is also playing into the TikTok algorithm. Theyre posting videos with trending sounds and have a reliable pace of videos going up. While TikToks algorithm is relatively elusive, its clear that playing into trends will get you forward.KamalaHQ has done a great job of using current viral TikTok trends and sounds, which have contributed to the viral nature of the account, says Lisa Arden, owner of Hella Cool Dog Co. and the creator of @allthefosterpups.A five-person Gen Z team is behind KamalaHQs videos, according to CNN. The team reportedly pitches quickly and has set minimal approval standards in order to cut out bureaucracy and help the account participate in trending conversations. When Harris announced Tim Walz as her running mate, the campaign set a video of the two at a rally to an audio clip taken from the hit reality show Love Island: This week, a hot new bombshell enters the villa. For context, Donald Trumps personal TikTok account, which has more than 10 million followers, often posts videos of the former president speaking at rallies or clips of him meeting popular creators. The account has more than 33.4 million total likes. (Harris also created her own TikTok account, which has more than 4.5 million followers and nearly 27 million likes.)What sets KamalaHQ apart from other campaign social media accounts, such as Trumps or other Democrats, is its focus on relatability, authenticity, and engaging with younger voters on a personal level, says Ramaa Mosley, co-founder and chief creative officer of agency Adolescent Content. Unlike Trumps dominance on TikTok with a more serious tone, Harris memes resonate with the audience by portraying her as someone they can connect with.It also helps that people are searching for information on Harris at a rate they havent before. In the first few days after Harris was announced as the Democrats likely nominee, people were in a collective mad dash looking up Harris positions and political history. One of Spehars podcast episodes on Harris received 400 times the normal downloads, they said. People in search of more information on a potential president likely went to the KamalaHQ TikTok account, saw fan-cam like videos, and were enchanted. For creators, the Harris momentum has led to an overall upswing in engagement on the platform. Pro-Harris content has accelerated likes, comments, and private messages, one creator told Wired. Hella Cool Dog Co.s Arden, who makes bandanas for dogs, says sales for Harris merch has skyrocketed (especially after Trumps VP pick JD Vance made comments about childless cat ladies.) When I was selling Biden/Harris merch 4 years ago sales were crazy as well but nowhere near as early into election season, Arden says.Democrats are hoping all of this engagement turns into voters showing up to the polls in November. CNN reported that more than 230,000 people have registered to vote through Vote.org since Biden announced he would step down. Within that group, 18% were 18-year-olds, while 81% were between 18 and 34, CNN reported.I think [HarrisHQ] is doing great as far as being an authentic [TikTok] member, Spehar says, but I think its also creating a bridge and a permission structure to vote, to say what you believe in, and to find that there are a lot more people who are voting and excited than who are contrarian and gave up.

  • Parsonson Architects perches stilted red home on coast of New Zealand
    www.dezeen.com
Warm tones feature across the facade and interior of The Lookout, a stilted house that local studio Parsonson Architects has added to a hillside site in New Zealand.Located on Ruby Bay in the Tasman District, the home comprises a timber structure elevated partially by a pair of columns in response to its sloping site.Parsonson Architects has created a stilted home in New ZealandParsonson Architects coated the home in red-painted cladding and weathered steel, creating a distinct exterior that is both weatherproof and complementary to the warm tones of the wooden interior."The core concept behind the design is to create a simple form, with a hard and weathered outer skin protecting warm interior spaces filled with natural materials and colour," studio founder Gerald Parsonson told Dezeen. The facade is finished with weathered steelWalls of exposed concrete blocks also feature across the home, including outside where they extend along the longest facades before intersecting with the hillside."Structural elements of exposed concrete blocks anchor the house into the site, contrasting with the interior delicacy of timber framed construction and finer detailing," said Parsonson.Large glass doors connect the living spaces to a patioRaised on a concrete plinth, The Lookout is accessed by an undulating driveway that curves up the hillside to a timber staircase. This external stair runs along one side of the home, flanked by plant beds and ending at a gravelled slope and wooden patio. To add interest to the home's simple rectangular form, Parsonson Architects incorporated geometric cutouts and a sloped roof. There are also expansive windows to frame the nearby bay and louvred steel screens and overhangs that offer shading and shelter.Read: Coast House by Stacey Farrell emerges from dunes on New Zealand beachThe wooden patio leads into The Lookout's open-plan living and dining area, which is designed to encourage indoor-outdoor living.Surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glazing, this space features modern furnishings and wooden finishes including Okoume plywood lining and exposed Douglas fir beams. Some walls are made from exposed concrete blocksFrom the living and dining room is a central corridor, with doors on either side connecting to a kitchen and additional lounge area. The corridor also leads to two bedrooms and bathrooms as well as a walk-in wardrobe and laundry room.Parsonson Architects grouped the living spaces at one end of the plan, while the stilted portion of the home that shelters the driveway contains the bedrooms.Warm-toned interiors complement the home's exterior"The interiors are clearly laid out, with bedrooms to the south and living spaces to the north," said Parsonson. "The kitchen and bedrooms are located to enjoy the morning sun and spectacular views eastwards over Tasman Bay."At the end of the corridor closest to the bedrooms, the walls are painted red to mimic the building's exterior and are illuminated by LED light strips.Expansive windows frame views of the nearby bayThe red colour continues into one of the home's bedrooms, where a bright accent wall helps bounce warm-toned light through the space. The other bedroom features a more muted palette, with off-white walls and a timber ceiling. While most of the home is designed around a warm colour scheme, some accents include cool green walls and metallic countertops.Wooden finishes and detailing feature on the interior"The material and colour palettes reflect a connection with the surrounding natural environment and the want to create rich, colourful and textural interiors," Parsonson explained.Other stilted buildings recently featured on Dezeen include a cedar-clad Quebec chalet and a shingle-coated sauna on a rocky Norwegian shore. The photography is by Simon Wilson. The post Parsonson Architects perches stilted red home on coast of New Zealand appeared first on Dezeen.

  • Herman Miller's OE1 Workbox, for Hot-Desk Workspaces
    www.core77.com
As workspaces evolve, both new and old objects are now entering them, to fill needs that workers didn't use to have. There are offices that now have locker rooms, for instance. And the situation where workers no longer have dedicated desks and instead move about a space throughout the day, has given rise to objects like Vitra's Locker Box and Drop Box, designed Konstantin Grcic.Herman Miller's offering in the latter category is this OE1 Workbox, designed by Industrial Facility. It's targeted at workers in hot-desk situations, and meant to help them shuttle their stuff from locker to desk, desk to meeting, et cetera. Nothing on it locks, but there is an insert tray, beneath which you can tuck things you might want to keep out of sight. The stackable boxes are made out of post-consumer ABS. While the Workbox will be a new workspace form for knowledge workers, there are members of staff who might find it familiar: "The OE1 Workbox is an organiser based on the utilitarian janitor box-tray."

  • Tangled outdoor furniture concept provides rest and direction for communities
    www.yankodesign.com
Residential complexes and small communities are on the rise, and some of these areas try to provide open spaces for rest and relaxation like parks or gardens. People new to such communities might find themselves often lost in the beginning, and guests or couriers will definitely be unfamiliar with the place. Signs arent always visible, and those that are might not blend well with the aesthetics and atmosphere of the residential complex. This concept design tries to hit multiple birds with a single stone by providing multi-functional furniture that not only looks like an art installation but also a rather subtle navigation guide for both residents and guests.Designer: Alice VakhniUnlike typical home and office furniture, outdoor furniture offers only temporary respite for people. Theyre not exactly the most comfortable products to use, especially since they have to be built to withstand unfavorable weather, but they do offer a place to sit, put down their things, or maybe even work and eat even if only for a while. Ironically, this also frees up outdoor furniture design from certain requirements, allowing them to embrace more unconventional forms, as long as they get the job done.THREADS is an example of such freedom, conceptualizing furniture that hardly looks like any typical benches or tables. They look more like giant metal thread, hence the name that snakes and loops around the complex, one segment at a time. Some have wavy structures with crests that provide stools for people to sit on, while others coil around structures like benches and tables. Some rise upward to become lamps, while others branch and loop to show directions.Thats the second not-so-obvious function of THREADS. Just like how Theseus used threads to navigate the labyrinth, the large pipes guide your eyes and your feet in the direction you need to go. They act like railings and guidelines that bend in the direction you should be walking if youre a bit lost. Of course, not all residential communities have the same layout, so the pipes modular design allows builders to combine different parts with different corners to create the navigation system they need.THREADS is also a piece of art, like an abstract sculptural installation designed to give communities a distinct character. The almost freeform flow of the threads leaves each segment open to interpretation and any use. Made with powder-coated hot-rolled steel pipes, what would normally convey an industrial and impersonal appearance transforms into something playful and approachable, becoming the proverbial thread that binds communities together. The post Tangled outdoor furniture concept provides rest and direction for communities first appeared on Yanko Design.
