• With the M4 Mac lineup, Apple will be doing something it hasnt in over a decade
    9to5mac.com
Seemingly, for the first time in forever, Apple will be updating every single Mac with an M4 chip, presuming rumors hold correct. There have been a number of times where this has been close, but it hasnt happened anytime in the past decade, at least.Earlier this fall, Apple introduced the first Macs with M4: MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini. There were a number of noteworthy upgrades, including more (and faster) Thunderbolt ports, nano-texture display options, and Center Stage camera upgrades. These refreshes covered a large chunk of the Mac lineup, only leaving MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro. According to Bloombergs Mark Gurman, MacBook Air will receive M4 in the spring, whereas Mac Studio and Mac Pro will receive it by the middle of 2025. So, presuming that holds up, every Mac in the lineup will be up to date.Historical Mac refreshesThere havent been many times where every Mac in the lineup has stayed up to date. We were pretty close with M1, where almost every Mac received that over the course of around 18 months except for the Mac Pro. In fact, since the Mac Pro is refreshed so infrequently, we have to use that as our key indicator. The last Mac Pro refresh was in 2023, receiving M2 Ultra. Most Macs received the M2 family of chips, with MacBook Air and 13 MacBook Pro kicking it off at WWDC22, Mac mini and MacBook Pro following up in January 2023, and Mac Studio & Mac Pro finishing off at WWDC23. However, there was no iMac refresh with M2, creating an imperfect cycle.Going back even further, 2019 when we got our first look at the current Mac Pro design. That was also another year where Apple refreshed most Macs, with the iMac (both sizes) kicking it off early in the year, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro joining mid year, and the all-new 16 MacBook Pro and subsequent Mac Pro towards the end of the year. However, there was no iMac Pro or Mac mini refresh, once again making 2019 an imperfect cycle. Even if you counted the Mac mini for that year, since it was pretty late in 2018, the lack of iMac Pro refresh would invalidate it.Oddly worded title, they didn't update every Mac with m4 a decade ago.I do hope this is the new norm. It would be great if there was some predictability on new models so that buyers don't have to try to read the tea leaves to determine whether or not it's the right time to buy a particular model in the lineup. But I suspect it might be more of a need to get rid of the M3 rather than being the new normal. View all commentsI could continue to go in detail, but Ill keep it brief. The last time every Mac was updated in a rolling 12 month period wouldve been 2013, when Apple introduced the trashcan Mac Pro, and also updated the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini within a year.Wrap upSo, assuming rumors hold up, the M4 will be the first time in over a decade where Apple has refreshed every single Mac. MacBook Air seems like a lock, and so does Mac Studio and Mac Pro. Lets just hope Apple doesnt change any plans, and we should be golden. What do you think of Apples M4 Mac lineup? • Mariah Carey Denies That Her Holiday Video Is AI Slop, But We're Not Convinced, for Obvious Reasons
    futurism.com
"She has officially been uploaded to the cloud."Wrap It UpChristmas queen Mariah Carey has released her latest yuletide dispatch and it looks anawful lot like it was made with AI.As part of Spotify's annual "Wrapped" campaign, which calculates users' top songs, the "All I Want For Christmas" singer provided a video to her top fans that appeared to show the star perching in front of a holiday tree while rocking some Santa-style red and white threads. The video, however, immediately felt off: the diva's lips didn't match up with her words, she was swaying strangely, and her perfectly-coiffed blonde hair was moving in peculiar ways."I think [it's] AI," one commenter on the r/popculturechat subreddit said of the video. "The tone/inflection she is speaking in just really doesn't match anything else on screen. It sounds like a prerecorded message, especially when she says 'thank you soo much.'"Over on X-formerly-Twitter, where the video was posted by a fan account, folks had similar if not more vulgar takes."No f*cking way you people actually think [that's] not [AI]," one user wrote."This queen is a pioneer," another quipped. "She has officially been uploaded to the cloud."Den-AI-lAs AI speculation continued to spread, Carey took to X to issue a fiery rebuttal."Bad lighting and a red lip have you all thinking this is AI??" the seasonal diva wrote. "Theres a reason Im not a fan of either of those things!"Others also jumped to her defense, claiming they could tell it was real "because you can see her eyes moving as she reads the script.""I don't know what's worse," yet another X user wrote, "the fact people think this is AI or the fact that it isn't and she genuinely sounds this monotonous."In the wake of Carey's official denial, we can't say for sure that the video was generated by AI but consider us suspicious, even if that puts us on the naughty list.Share This Article

  • OpenAI Employee Says Theyve "Already Achieved AGI"
    futurism.com
Just a few days after the full release of OpenAI's o1 model, a company staffer is now claiming that the company has achieved artificial general intelligence (AGI)."In my opinion," OpenAI employee Vahid Kazemi wrote in a post on X-formerly-Twitter, "we have already achieved AGI and its even more clear with O1."If you were anticipating a fairly massive caveat, though, you weren't wrong."We have not achieved 'better than any human at any task,'" he continued, "but what we have is 'better than most humans at most tasks.'"Critics will note that Kazemi is seizing on a convenient and unconventional definition of AGI. He's not saying that the company's AI is more effective than a person with expertise or skills in a certain task, but that it can do such a variety of tasks even if the end result is dubious that no human can compete with the sheer breadtth.A member of the firm's technical staff, Kazemi went on to muse about the nature of LLMs and whether or not they're simply "following a recipe.""Some say LLMs only know how to follow a recipe," he wrote. "Firstly, no one can really explain what a trillion parameter deep neural net can learn. But even if you believe that, the whole scientific method can be summarized as a recipe: observe, hypothesize, and verify."While that does come off somewhat defensive, it also gets to the heart of OpenAI's public outlook: that simply pouring more and more data and processing power into existing machine learning systems will eventually result in a human-level intelligence."Good scientists can produce better hypothesis [sic] based on their intuition, but that intuition itself was built by many trial and errors," Kazemi continued. "Theres nothing that cant be learned with examples."Notably, this missive was made right after news broke that OpenAI had removed "AGI" from the terms of its deal with Microsoft, so the business implications of the assertion are unclear. One thing's for sure, though: we haven'tyet seen an AI that can compete in the labor force with a human worker in any serious and general way. If that happens, the Kazemis of the world will have earned our attention.Share This Article

  • Hackers Using Fake Video Conferencing Apps to Steal Web3 Professionals' Data
    thehackernews.com
Dec 07, 2024Ravie LakshmananMalware / Web3 SecurityCybersecurity researchers have warned of a new scam campaign that leverages fake video conferencing apps to deliver an information stealer called Realst targeting people working in Web3 under the guise of fake business meetings."The threat actors behind the malware have set up fake companies using AI to make them increase legitimacy," Cado Security researcher Tara Gould said. "The company reaches out to targets to set up a video call, prompting the user to download the meeting application from the website, which is Realst infostealer."The activity has been codenamed Meeten by the security company, owing to the use of names such as Clusee, Cuesee, Meeten, Meetone, and Meetio for the bogus sites. The attacks entail approaching prospective targets on Telegram to discuss a potential investment opportunity, urging them to join a video call hosted on one of the dubious platforms. Users who end up on the site are prompted to download a Windows or macOS version depending on the operating system used.Once installed and launched on macOS, users are greeted with a message that claims "The current version of the app is not fully compatible with your version of macOS" and that they need to enter their system password in order for the app to work as expected. This is accomplished by means of an osascript technique that has been adopted by several macOS stealer families such as Atomic macOS Stealer, Cuckoo, MacStealer, Banshee Stealer, and Cthulhu Stealer. The end goal of the attack is to steal various kinds of sensitive data, including from cryptocurrency wallets, and export them to a remote server. The malware is also equipped to steal Telegram credentials, banking information, iCloud Keychain data, and browser cookies from Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, Brave, Arc, Cc Cc, and Vivaldi. The Windows version of the app Nullsoft Scriptable Installer System (NSIS) file that's signed with a likely stolen legitimate signature from Brys Software Ltd. Embedded within the installer is an Electron application that's configured to retrieve the stealer executable, a Rust-based binary, from an attacker-controlled domain."Threat actors are increasingly using AI to generate content for their campaigns," Gould said. "Using AI enables threat actors to quickly create realistic website content that adds legitimacy to their scams, and makes it more difficult to detect suspicious websites."This is not the first time fake meeting software brands have been leveraged to deliver malware. Earlier this March, Jamf Threat Labs revealed that it detected a counterfeit website called meethub[.]gg to propagate a stealer malware that shares overlaps with Realst. Then in June, Recorded Future detailed a campaign dubbed markopolo that targeted cryptocurrency users with bogus virtual meeting software to drain their wallets by using stealers like Rhadamanthys, Stealc, and Atomic. The development comes as the threat actors behind the Banshee Stealer macOS malware shut down their operations after the leak of their source code. It's unclear what prompted the leak. The malware was advertised on cybercrime forums for a monthly subscription of $3,000.It also follows the emergence of new stealer malware families like Fickle Stealer, Wish Stealer, Hexon Stealer, and Celestial Stealer, even as users and businesses searching for pirated software and AI tools are being targeted with RedLine Stealer and Poseidon Stealer, respectively."The attackers behind this campaign are clearly interested in gaining access to organizations of Russian-speaking entrepreneurs who use software to automate business processes," Kaspersky said of the RedLine Stealer campaign.Found this article interesting? • Romania Cancels Presidential Election Results After Alleged Russian Meddling on TikTok
    thehackernews.com
Dec 07, 2024Ravie LakshmananCybersecurity / Election FraudIn a historic decision, Romania's constitutional court has annulled the result of the first round of voting in the presidential election amid allegations of Russian interference. As a result, the second round vote, which was scheduled for December 8, 2024, will no longer take place. Clin Georgescu, who won the first round, denounced the verdict as an "officialized coup" and an attack on democracy."The electoral process for the election of the President of Romania will be resumed in its entirety, with the Government to establish a new date for the election of the President of Romania, as well as a new calendar program for the implementation of the necessary actions," the Constitutional Court of Romania said. The judiciary body said the decision is pursuant to Article 146(f) of the Constitution, emphasizing the need to ensure the fairness and legality of the electoral process. The decision is final and binding. The development comes days after declassified documents released by the Romanian government alleged a pro-Russian influence campaign that leveraged a network of 25,000 accounts on social media platform TikTok to promote Georgescu in a coordinated effort. That said, it's currently not clear from the document whether Georgescu was aware of the alleged campaign or assisted in it. Russia has denied any interference in the election process.Separately, the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) disclosed that the E.U. and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member state was the target of more than 85,000 intrusion attempts before and during the first round of the election that was designed to gain access to election websites and IT systems."The mode of operation, as well as the scale of the cyber campaign, lead to the conclusion that the attacker possesses considerable resources, consistent with a mode of operation specific to a state-sponsored attacker," the SRI said.In a statement released Friday, the U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said: "Romanians must have confidence that their elections reflect the democratic will of the Romanian people and are free of foreign malign influence aimed at undermining the fairness of their elections."The European Commission, in a press statement on Thursday, said it has stepped up its monitoring of TikTok, urging the platform to "freeze and preserve data related to actual or foreseeable systemic risks its service could pose on electoral processes and civic discourse in the E.U."To that end, it has been asked to retain internal documents and information regarding the design and functioning of its recommender systems, in addition to details on how it's addressing the risk of intentional manipulation through a technique called coordinated inauthentic behavior (CIB).The development comes as TikTok revealed this week that it disrupted two small clusters in late November 2024, each comprising 78 and 12 accounts, respectively, that covertly campaigned for Georgescu and independent political candidate Mircea Geoan.Back in September, the popular social media service said it took down a network of 22 accounts operating from Romania that were found to make use of inauthentic accounts to spread misinformation and amplify narratives critical of the government. The network had a total of 300,000 followers between them."The networks we have detected specifically targeting the Romanian elections have so far been small scale operations coordinated on TikTok that operated domestically," it said. "We also look closely at off platform activity to prevent covert influence operations and deceptive behaviours."Found this article interesting?
