EventsMartre Meets Again, and the Competition is FierceSign painters collaborate on a series of shopfronts for the second Martre gathering in France.Better LettersDec 12, 2024 6 min readWinning work-in-progress at Martre 2024.For the second year of France's Martre gathering, it was a case of (paint) shop 'til you drop for the assembled sign painters. Hosts Tristan Gesret (@etsgesret) and AdelineLe Broc had erected a dozen blank shopfronts on 'Rue de la Martre', and the teams of three drew lots to see which they would be furnishing with signs. The concept for Martre 2024 was a street of shops decorated with signage from different eras. The briefs included the shop typebakery, pharmacy, cheesemonger, etcand the era in which it was to be styled. In addition to the faade, other signage elements were required, including work on the glass panel in the door, and a blade sign or A-board to be displayed outside. All of this had to be designed and produced on the second day of the event, and to add a little extra motivation, there were prizes up for grabs for the top three teams.Ready, Set, Go!The energy levels were high as the teams collaborated to get to the finish line with the best possible final output.Adding a shade to the bakery's fascia sign.Action stations on Rue de la Martre. It's neck and neck in the race for prizes.Gilded windows, A-boards, and more were created by the teams for their allocated shops. The Paint BarTo increase the efficiency of the work in hand, a new innovation for Martre 2024 was the introduction of a 'paint bar'. This allowed the sign painters to get their cups filled and topped up in the required colours by a professional pigmentista. The paint bar was well stocked with colours from 1-Shot and Unikalo.Job Done! After two days of blood, sweat, and paint, the final set of shopfronts made for an impressive Rue de la Martre display.Rue de la Martre in all its finished glory.Top of the ShopsOn the third and final day, the finished shops were judged, and prizes were awarded to the three winning teams.Pharmacy (1901)In first place it was Morgane Cme, Bruno Durand, and Lucas Teyssier with their fin de sicle (turn-of-the-century) pharmacy.Art Nouveau is the remedy. In good health: winners Bruno Durand, Morgane Cme, and Lucas Teyssier.Wines & Liqueurs (1949)The silver medal went to Antoine Paquier, Tania Rodier, and Pierre Raveleau for their 1949 wine merchants.Faux panels, gilded embellishments, and a novel blade sign for the wine and liqueur shop.Antoine Paquier, Pierre Raveleau, and Tania Rodier before heading off for a drink to celebrate.Butcher-Delicatessen (1894)Last but not least in the ranking shopfronts was the late nineteenth century butcher-delicatessen by Etienne Renard, Victor Bert, and Matthieu Verlaine.More gilded goodness and a bovine prop to finish things off at Le Broc.Victor Bert, Matthieu Verlaine, and Etienne Renard with their meaty haul.Everyone's a WinnerHere are the other nine projects completed at Martre 2024. Can you guess the era for each one?Completing the dozen Martre 2024 projects are these nine shops decked out over the first two days of the event.Same Again? With two years under their belt, Tristan and Adeline are already planning for the third Martre gathering in 2025, adding that this year:"We were thrilled to bring all these people together, and the result was incrediblethere was a truly impressive level of skill and talent on display. The discussions and exchanges led to the creation of a French sign painters' association, marking a significant gathering for the community in France. We witnessed some amazing work that will undoubtedly inspire exciting projects in the future."Martre 2024 was made possible with support from the following organisations: A.S. Handover; Le Gant des Beaux-Arts; Le Laboureur; Pinceaux Lonard; Pinstriping France Kustom; La Trinitaine. This blade sign suggests that Martre is here for good.More MartreMore Letterheads

What if succulents sprouted in squiggles? Or cacti turned orange and floated to the sky like balloons? An imaginative animation by Hiroshi Takagishi pushes botanical specimens and their potential evolution to peculiar extremes. Inspired by contradictions and irregularities in nature, Odd is a digitally crafted film that envisions the ways various specimens could morph from one state to another. As cacti wiggle and wobble or burst into dainty green petals, their recognizable forms become strange and surreal.Find more from Takagishi on Vimeo.Do stories and artists like this matter to you? Monarch butterflies in El Rosario Sanctuary can be quite active in the heat of the day. To quench their thirst, hundreds swarm to the ground near a small stream, where they sip liquid and important minerals from the wet soila behavior called puddling. All photos Jaime Rojo, courtesy of Vital Impacts, shared with permissionVital Impacts Saving the Monarchs Campaign with Jaime Rojo Raises Funds for ConservationDecember 12, 2024Kate MothesHome to more than 40,000 plant species, 1,300 kinds of birds, and millions of insects, the Amazon is a vital and increasingly threatened part of our global ecosystem. By highlighting the incredible diversity and beauty of nature and wildlife around the planet, Vital Impacts (previously) raises funds for the preservation of the rainforest through its annual print sale. This year, in addition to the fundraiser featuring work by more than 80 photographers, the program has launched the Saving the Monarchs campaign, showcasing the work of award-winning National Geographic photographer Jaime Rojo. With the Monarch butterfly population declining by 90 percent in recent decades, efforts are underway to protect their habitats and ensure their survival, says a statement from Vital Impacts. In the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Michoacan (Mexico), a single latecomer joins the others for the night, stretching its wings as it maneuvers in an attempt to squeeze into the popular roosting place. The butterflies extreme closeness offers protection and warmth.Rojo has spent two decades photographing the magnificent insects, tracing their annual migration across the length and breadth of North America. Wintering in Mexicoor California for those west of the Rocky Mountainsthe iconic butterflies return north in the summertime, where they typically lay a single egg on a milkweed plant. Depending on the temperature, the egg cycle lasts for three to five days, after which a small larva emerges. As it grows, it sheds its skin a number of times, developing recognizable black, white, and yellow stripes. Then, once full grown, the larva spins a silk mat, stabs a stem into the mat to hang from, and encapsulates itself inside a pupa. After around eight to fifteen days, the adult Monarch emerges with bright orange and black wings.During the summer, Monarchs live between two and five weeks, but if they hatch later in the year, they complete an incredible journey south, where they overwinter in clusters on trees in warmer climates. These adults will then live just long enough to hatch new eggs so future generations can return to the northernmost breeding grounds.Monarch populations have declined in recent decades due to myriad factors, from the destruction of milkweedthe only plant on which they lay eggsand overwintering habitats to temperature changes and drought due to the ongoing climate crisis. Initiatives like Monarch Watch, which this fundraiser benefits, emphasize conservation, track colonies movements, and promote education.Butterflies stream through the trees in El Rosario, a sanctuary within the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Michoacn, Mexico. Migrating monarchs winter in the same oyamel fir groves that sheltered earlier generations.Open edition prints in this years sale start at $275, with options for different sizes and striking limited editions. Sixty percent of profits are earmarked to support Monarch conservation and regional Indigenous communities through COICA, an international program dedicated to the support of 511 Indigenous Peoples in the Amazon Basin. The remaining 40 percent of proceeds support the storytellers who are committed to shining a light on these critical issues and driving positive change in our world. See more of Rojos work on his website, and purchase prints in this years sale, which continues through January 31.I had attempted versions of this image in the past, but I had never seen such a beautiful pattern of branches with that abundance of butterflies, Rojo says.Streaked with sunlight and crowded together for warmth in winter, Monarch butterflies blanket fir trees in El Rosario Sanctuary, Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, Michoacan, Mexico. I requested special permits to work outside the sanctuarys operating hours and made this photograph shortly before sunset, Rojo says.A Monarch butterfly feeds from a Blazing Star (Liatris sp.) on a farm in Foley, Minnesota, that specializes in growing and distributing native plants from the prairies. Liatris are important for the monarchs because they bloom in late summer, providing them with an extra food source right before their fall migration.A carpet of Monarch butterflies covers the forest floor of El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary after an unusually intense snowstorm that hit the state of Michoacn in Mexico on March 2016. On March 8 and 9 of 2016, a strong snowstorm hit the mountains of Central Mexico creating havoc in the wintering colonies of Monarch butterflies just when they were starting their migration back to U.S.A. and Canada. The death toll of this single weather event was an estimated 30 to 35 percent of the colony. Each fall, millions of Monarch butterflies embark on a 3,000-mile journey from Canada and the U.S. to the forests of central Mexico. This annual migration, one of natures most extraordinary events, is guided by instinct, as the Monarchs that arrive have never made the journey before. Monarch butterflies complete their migration over several generations. Those that travel to Mexico in the fall live up to eight months, but their offspring will only live a few weeks, moving north each spring. It takes three to four generations to reach their breeding grounds in the U.S. and Canada.Previous articleNext article

  • CISOs: Dont rely solely on technical defences in 2025
    www.computerweekly.com
Threats have been more sophisticated, unpredictable and harder to pin down. Attackers dont just exploit technical weaknesses they target human behaviour, organisational blind spots, and even regulatory loopholes. From spear phishing and deepfake fraud to misinformation generated by artificial intelligence (AI), cyber criminals are using emerging technologies to launch attacks with precision and ease. This means the old playbook of relying solely on technical defences isnt enough anymore.Organisations need a shift in mindset: prioritising secure human behaviours, leveraging technologies like GenAI, and addressing business risks as much as external threats. The scope of cyber security is not just tech-savvy but also human-centric.CISOs need to also consider the following trends for their security strategies for the near future. In 2024, one of the more subtle yet critical challenges that emerged was the rise of malinformation deliberate misinformation aimed at manipulating and destabilising. Battling misinformation and reputational threats is becoming a top-line issue for all. By 2028, organisations will spend over $500 billion annually addressing malinformation, with impacts felt across marketing and cyber security budgets alike.Deepfake fraud, social engineering, and AI-driven scams are driving the need for enterprise-wide programmes led by CISOs. Companies must prioritise investments in resilience measures such as chaos engineering to prepare for these challenges.Zero-trust has become a cyber security cornerstone, but its application has limits. By 2026, 75% of organisations will exclude legacy systems and operational environments from zero-trust strategies due to their unique constraints.Adapting zero-trust principles to non-IT systems, like production lines or older platforms, will be critical for organisations looking to expand their defences while maintaining operational efficiency.Cyber security leaders are facing increased accountability. By 2027, two-thirds of Global 100 companies will extend directors and officers insurance to their cyber security leaders, reflecting heightened scrutiny on their roles. Clarifying the CISO role and aligning it with regulatory expectations is vital to manage these risks effectively.Insider threats remain a significant challenge, particularly in an era of remote and hybrid work. By 2027, 70% of organisations will combine data loss prevention and insider risk management with identity and access systems. This integrated approach will help businesses better identify and mitigate potential threats while simplifying their security frameworks. The Computer Weekly Security Think Tank looks aheadMike Gillespie and Ellie Hurst, Advent IM:CISOs will face growing challenges in 2025 and beyond.Elliot Rose, PA Consulting:The most pressing challenges for CISOs and cyber security teams.Pierre-Martin Tardif, ISACA:Six trends that will define cyber through to 2030.Stephen McDermid, Okta: In 2025: Identities conquer, and hopefully unite.GenAIis set to make a practical but measured impact on cybersecurity operations. By 2028, AI-driven solutions will allow 50% of entry-level cybersecurity roles to be filled without requiring specialised education, helping organisations bridge talent shortages. In addition, organisations integrating GenAI into employee training programmes and security workflows could see up to a 40% reduction in employee-driven incidents by 2026. While GenAI offers promising tools for improving efficiency and education, it should be viewed as a complement to, not a replacement for, broader security strategies. As low-code and no-code tools grow in popularity, application security is moving closer to the teams building the software. By 2027, 30% of organisations will empower non-technical professionals to manage aspects of app security, supported by new roles like application security product managers. Providing these teams with the right resources and training will be essential to maintaining robust security practices in a more decentralised environment.2024 underscored the growing personal and legal stakes for cyber security leaders. As the threat landscape evolves, the lessons of 2024 underline the critical need for organisations to be agile, innovative, and human-focused in their strategies. While the potential of GenAI is undeniable, its success will hinge on careful governance and targeted use. At the same time, the growing impact of threats like malinformation and personal liability underscores the need for new tools, strategies, and insurance protections.Ultimately, cyber security in 2025 will require security and risk management leaders to act decisively and collaboratively. Those who embrace this complexity and prioritise building secure behaviours within their teams will be the ones who stay ahead and succeed in 2025.Deepti Gopal is director analyst at Gartner.

  • Tech workers say diversity and inclusion efforts are working
    www.computerweekly.com
Rawpixel.com - stock.adobe.comNewsTech workers say diversity and inclusion efforts are workingThe status of diversity in the technology sector remains up for debate, but some tech industry workers are seeing improvements, says Tenth Revolution GroupByClare McDonald,Business Editor Published: 12 Dec 2024 15:39 Tech workers claim that where organisations are working to improve diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) those efforts are making a difference, according to a survey. As part of its Careers and Hiring Guide 23/24, tech talent firm Tenth Revolution Group gathered data from global employees at Amazon Web Services, Microsoft 365, Azure and Business Applications, NetSuite and Salesforce, and found that 71% of tech workers claimed their workplace promotes DEI and that these efforts are having a positive impact.Caroline Fox, global ED&I strategy lead for Tenth Revolution Group, said: Most tech employers are investing resources in ED&I, and the majority of tech professionals are affirming its positive impact. And while the numbers do drop slightly, its especially great to see that its still a majority when we filter specifically for marginalised communities across the range of tech ecosystems. My hope is that more data like this will enable us to keep focusing our efforts on implementation and meaningful inclusion across the sector.Diversity in the tech sector has been a focus of debate for many years, and the progress towards improving diversity in the UKs technology industry has been slow.Figures from BCS, for example, found in the four years to 2022, the percentage of women in tech roles only grew by 4%, and the number of people from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds grew by just 2% in the same timeframe.Read more about diversity in techCommunity focused not-for-profit Tech Cornwall has developed a skills programme to help people from diverse backgrounds move into tech careers.Research by organisations Women in Tech North and Tech Returners finds that women believe developing alternative routes into tech jobs will help close the industrys diversity gap.The slow growth in some cases has been attributed to company attitudes towards DEI practices, sometimes only focusing on one group, or addressing their hiring practices without taking into consideration retention.Just under 70% of those involved in Tenth Revolutions research said their employer is investing in DEI initiatives, and while 71% of employees as a whole feel these are working, this number fluctuates depending on the focus of the efforts.Elsewhere in the industry, attitudes towards DEI are mixed, with some saying firms are doing well to increase the diversity of tech teams, while others claim budget cuts and a lack of leadership buy-in are preventing these initiatives from making a difference.Tenth Revolution found 69% of tech professionals believe their workplace is an equal opportunities employer for tech workers who are differently abled. The outlook is much the same for tech workers who are people of colour, with 68% saying their employer is supportive of people of colour in the workplace. The number drops even further when it comes to supporting women in tech, with 62% saying their employer promotes equality inclusion and internal culture can play a huge role in retaining diverse talent, but this is especially true of women.Data from Tech Talent Charter found a lack of flexible working practices stands in the way of women choosing to stay in a tech role or in the tech sector as a whole, with 40% of women in tech saying their future career choices will depend on their care responsibilities. There has been an unfortunate trend of DEI practices being scaled back over the past year, with many industry organisations stating diversity and inclusion practices should continue to be intentional and well planned rather than for show. There is widespread opinion that with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) technology and a growing skills gap, the push for diversity in the sector is now more important than ever.In The Current Issue:CIO interview: Steve OConnor, Aston MartinNCSC boss calls for sustained vigilance in an aggressive worldDownload Current IssueData engineering - Eve: Making a case for transformed unstructured data with LLM-power CW Developer NetworkGrid Dynamics creates developer portal CW Developer NetworkView All Blogs

The Raspberry Pi is an excellent piece of hardware, but it's been built within specific constraints that enable mass appeal. These SBCs take what the Raspberry Pi brought to the table further with features that allow you to customize your experience. Our list includes options personally tested by ZDNET authors and highly recommended products based on customer reviews and feedback, with these factors specifically in mind:Performance: Performance is critical when you consider purchasing a new SBC. We have considered processing power, RAM, and graphics and have included options able to handle resource-heavy projects.Connectivity: SBCs offer a range of connectivity options. Some provide Bluetooth, for example, whereas others only have HDMI and Ethernet.Storage: Some SBCs include storage, while others provide USB ports for connecting external drives. We like to include a range of options.Ease of use: SBCs don't have to be complex, and some of our options include practical color coding or other features to make your projects easier to handle.Price: Not everyone wants to invest in the most high-spec SBC out there, especially if they are just starting out and exploring their interests. We have considered a range of devices with beginners, hobbyists, and tech enthusiasts in mind. Show more Factors to consider when choosing a Raspberry Pi alternative: When you are selecting your new Raspberry Pi alternative, you should consider the following essential factors:Price: How much are you willing to spend on your new project? The use case matters, too: if you are just starting out, a cheaper SBC should be fine, whereas you might want to spend more on long-term projects.Project: If you want an SBC for hobbyist projects, you won't need the most advanced or expensive kits out there -- minimal RAM and processing will do, and so you might not want to go for the most advanced processing power or the best board.Next-gen tasks: If you want to explore the capabilities of AI, for example, you might want to consider a model with higher specifications or something built with these projects in mind, such as the Nvidia Jetson.Media: If you intend to use your Raspberry Pi alternative for media, such as streaming audio and video, ensure that the SBC you are considering has the required components and support. Show more Raspberry Pi alternative FAQs What's the best way to get started with a single-board computer? The Raspberry Pi is still the best place to start if you want to get experience with a single-board computer. Also: Raspberry Pi just released its own high-performance SSDs and SSD kitsThese alternatives are a great next step to expand your SBC knowledge. The Raspberry Pi is a great tool for familiarizing yourself with the setup and GPIO pins. It's also a useful tool if one of your kids has an interest in programming that you want to encourage. Show more What's a good source for cases for your Raspberry Pi or an alternative SBC? There are various options. You can find a lot of generic cases out there to protect your Raspberry Pi or alternative SBC, and I recommend getting one. After all, if you're investing in an SBC, you should protect it.Also, if you are lucky enough to own a 3D printer, then you'll have an endless supply of cases!Alternatively, you can visit the 3D printing marketplace Pinshape to find your perfect case. Show more Can you make your single-board computer waterproof? You can try to waterproof the case by using seals or silicone grease. You could also spray the board with a conformal coating to resist moisture. But beyond these steps, there's no way to make them completely waterproof, and you risk damage if you don't keep your electronics away from adverse weather conditions and environments. Show more Why are Raspberry Pi models so expensive now? Inflation aside, the cost of Raspberry Pi models -- once only $15 or so -- has increased due to a number of factors. Supply shortages, made worse during the pandemic, have impacted supply and demand, andthe price of computing components and chips has increased. Show more Do professionals use Raspberry Pi? Yes, many professionals use Raspberry Pi. However, professionals also use alternatives to it. It all depends on personal and project needs. Show more What is Raspberry Pi? Raspberry Pi is a small computing system available for a lower price than a PC or a laptop and is used to build computers, robots, security systems, and more. In a sense, it functions as the compact brain of a system or project. Show more Is Banana Pi a good alternative to Raspberry Pi? Yes, Banana Pi is a solid alternative to Raspberry Pi. It is a similar system but has added benefits in some areas. For example, it supports a wider range of operating systems, such as Android and Linux (including Ubuntu). It allows for more powerful processors and additional RAM options, as well as enhanced connectivity like Gigabit ethernet and SATA support.
