  • How to find your power as a Black entrepreneur
    www.fastcompany.com
For generations, the conventional wisdom for Black professionals was simple: Get a good job and keep it. Its what most of our parents drilled into us. Mom and Dads wisdom didnt account for a few pretty significant events. Millennials, for instance, entered a workforce still feeling the sting of the 2008 recession, and the stability our parents promised us was wildly elusive. We had a global pandemic that gave many boomers and Gen Xers the first opportunity to look at our careers and ask ourselves, what do we really want from work? And how do we leverage our hard-earned skills and experience to take more control over how we use our time and talents to make money? Now, in 2024, everywhere you look, professionals are hustlingwhether its starting our own business, freelancing, or running a side hustle alongside our nine-to-five. Theres a sense of urgency we havent seen in a very long time, and Black professionals are leading the charge in what I like to call the Black Business Boom. New LinkedIn data has uncovered that 77% of Black professionals want to dive into entrepreneurship or kick-start their own business. The mindset has shifted from just finding a job to creating opportunities and building something of our own. While the idea of running your own business can feel intimidating, its important to remember that there is no perfect path or one-size-fits-all approach in your entrepreneurial journey. What we do know is that knowledge gives you options, and options give you agency. That need for agency is the driving force behind this seemingly rapid move toward entrepreneurship for Black professionals. How we arrived at the Black Business BoomSimple: The job market has everyone on edge. People arent staying in their jobs because theyre in love with what they dotheyre staying because uncertain markets increase the volume of Mom and Dads voices in their heads (Get that good job and keep it). While layoffs have slowed, the job market is extremely competitive, and companies arent hiring as robustly. Professionals of color have a long memory of how they felt just a year or so ago when household-name companies were making layoff headlines left and right. Its no wonder that according to LinkedIn data, 69% of Black professionals are thinking about freelancing. The uncertainty is real, and its driving people to question their next move. Do I want to only work for someone else, or is it time to take control and work for myself? Thats where the urgency comes in. Folks are putting together their one-to-two-year exit strategies and taking their career into their own hands. Some want to pivot to something theyre more passionate about (49%), while others seek more fulfillment at work (44%). Lets be honest: Fulfillment is real. No one wants to love their jobs only when they get paid on the 1st and the 15th.Weve moved from the conventional wisdom of aspiring to job security and are now thinking about economic resilience. Its about finding that agencychoosing to create your own path and take back control despite any shifts in the market. How to find areas of opportunity as a Black entrepreneurBlack entrepreneurs have proved that there are no saturated markets for us. Black consumers have been so historically underserved by product and service companies that industries like cosmetics, apparel, food service, and hospitality catering to the unique wants, needs, and culture of Black folks are wide-open spaces. The joy about running a company and being your own boss is that you can run it however you wantand right now, there are countless opportunities to serve Black consumers who have been historically overlooked. For example, a recent Fashion Institute of Technology study found that thousands of Black women have to travel more than 30 minutes to buy beauty products that fit their needs (a foundation color in their shade or hair products made for their hair texture). Thats a massive gap in the market just waiting to be filled, and its inspiring Black business owners to step up. Imagine creating a beauty truck or beauty vending machine specifically inclusive of beauty products for Black women.Black entrepreneurs are also finding success by entering industries that are seemingly saturated but wide open for innovation when approached from a fresh perspective and cultural nuance. Take Slutty Vegan. Black vegans exist, but where were the vegan soul food restaurants that catered to them? Or even barbershop booking apps like the Cut, which was designed to meet the needs and unique barbershop culture of Black men. When cofounder and CEO Obi Omile Jr. created the app in 2016, he was filling a gap for Black barbers. Sure there were other business management platforms for booking barbershop appointments, but he built his app with Black barbers and consumers in mind. In 2023, the Cut celebrated $2 billion worth of haircuts booked on the app. I personally contributed to that number, as I used the app to find my own barber when I moved from Harlem, New York, to Atlanta in 2020, and continue to book my weekly bald fade and beard lineup on the app to this day.The point is that there are so many untapped markets for Black professionals to jump into and succeed in, the potential is limitless. So you have an ideaheres how you turn passion into profitYouve got the spark, the visionnow its time to turn that passion into profit. Some professionals might feel a little lost or have some angst about how to take that first step into their business journey. The truth is, 63% of Black professionals are unsure how to get started in running their own business. With thriving online communities of Black entrepreneurs and professionals, there are now endless opportunities for small-business owners to grow their networks and share resources, unlocking technologys ability to democratize economic opportunity.Black entrepreneurs are building their networks in digital spaces to share information, insights, wins, and losses to mentor each other, peer-to-peer. Information is power, and networks and networking are really about building a community of people who are rooting for you to win. Whether you want to start a side hustle, switch to a freelance career, or step out and build a new business, remember youre not just creating a businessyoure taking control of your career and future. Technology tools and the visibility, access, and opportunity (without the gatekeepers) are how many Black professionals are not just becoming the CEOs of their own businesses, they are tapping into each other and their ambitions to become the CEOs of their own lives.

  • Studio Est adds "brutalist elements" to Battersea Power Station apartment
    www.dezeen.com
London interiors firm Studio Est referenced the industrial heritage of Battersea Power Station when creating the interiors for this apartment set within the redeveloped landmark. The apartment's owner wanted to transform the empty shell into a space that would reflect both his personal tastes and the home's setting within the former art deco power station.Studio Est has transformed the interiors of a Battersea Power Station apartmentKnown for its quiet luxury interiors, Studio Est applied a palette of subtle neutral shades to unify the apartment's open-plan spaces and provide a consistent backdrop for various characterful furnishings and artworks."We wanted to keep it simple but introduce subtle brutalist elements that evoke the building's history," founder Louise East told Dezeen. "These are complemented by softer textures that add a more feminine touch."Mario Bellini and Charles Rennie Mackintosh chairs feature in the dining roomAlthough some areas of the redeveloped power station feature steel beams and other industrial details, East found the apartment entirely devoid of original elements. So the studio turned to furniture, artwork and accessories to introduce character and visual interest to the living spaces.A dramatic painting is set against the neutral wallsDramatic pieces, including a large painting in the dining room and a bespoke geometric sofa in the lounge area, were chosen to ground these spaces and introduce a masculine feel.East then layered these with textural details including cushions, lampshades and linen-wool blend curtains, all of which were custom-made for the project. The room also houses a metal reinterpretation of Gerrit Rietveld's Zigzag chairAlongside the bespoke items, Studio Est sourced various vintage pieces including leather chairs by Italian designer Mario Bellini, which surround the dark wooden dining table.A Hill House Chair by Scottish art deco architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh and a metal reinterpretation of Gerrit Rietveld's seminal Zigzag chair also feature in the dining room.Read: Archmongers celebrates "raw beauty of brutalist concrete" in Trellick Tower apartment refreshThe two bedrooms display distinctly different approaches to colour and materiality. The principal bedroom is painted in a rich terracotta hue that lends the space a warm, enveloping atmosphere, while the second bedroom incorporates textures chosen to complement the adjacent gardens."Although it's an open-plan apartment, we didn't want all the rooms to look the same," said East, who established her studio in 2020 after 15 years of working for other architects and interior designers including Russell Sage and Martin Brudnizki.A bespoke geometric sofa centres the lounge area"It's good to be able to move from one space to another and have a different look and feel," she added. "The main bedroom is intentionally different to the living areas because we wanted to make this a space where the client can come after a day's work and feel comfortable reading a book."Throughout the apartment, the owner's ceramics collection is displayed on characterful plinths, carefully positioned to emphasise specific views within the spaces and of the landscaped gardens outside.Cushions and curtains were made custom for the projectBattersea Power Station was designed by British architect Giles Gilbert Scott and built by the London Power Company in several phases between 1929 and 1955. • Make this simple mindset shift to reject negativity and stay focused on success
    www.fastcompany.com
We all love the summertime. The long days. The warm evenings. The wind in the trees. The opportunity to visit faraway places. We love the summer until everything we love about it is driven from our minds by the blazing hot sun and oppressive humidity. Thus, we do what we do best: Overlook the sweetness of the fruit to curse the bitterness of the pits. Its human nature, isnt it? You may have heard the story of the college professor who showed his class a sheet of white paper with a single black dot.He instructed his students to write a paragraph describing what they saw. Some described the nature of the dot or its position on the page. Some mused philosophically, pondering the relentless presence of darkness intruding upon the light. Some waxed poetic, lamenting the inevitability of lifes imperfections. After perusing their responses, the professor said: Every one of you chose to focus on the single black dot, which represents less than one percent of the page. None of you contemplated the whiteness of the paper, which remains pristine aside from a tiny spot. What is it that compels us to focus on the dark side?Observation suggests its a choice weve learned to make by habit, the way we fixate on a hangnail or a crooked picture. And if so, then its a habit we can unlearn with a mindset shifta small measure of applied mindfulness and self-discipline.Make the mindset shift when it rains, so you can be grateful for the water that keeps the earth alive despite the dampness. When it snows, be grateful for sledding and days off from school or work rather than resent the cold. And when the summer sun beats down, be grateful for air-conditioning while admiring the earlier generations who survived without it for thousands of years. Then, after youve acclimated to the artificially produced cold, dry air inside your home, make the mindset shift when you step out onto your porch to revel in the first moments of light and warmth. As you do, reflect on this weeks addition to the Ethical Lexicon:Apricate (apricate /ap-r-kate) verbTo bask in the sunThe word apricate derives from the Latin aperio, meaning to uncover, lay bare, or reveal. Of particular interest, however, are the Spanish derivations abrigo and abrigado, which mean precisely the opposite: covered, sheltered, or protected. On the one hand, the light of the sun reveals and exposes. It drives away the darkness of night, literally, and also the twilight of confusion, allegorically. On the other hand, the sun affords protection and shelter from the cold by warming us against the bitterness of literal and figurative winter. How should we relate to the sun (or anything else)? Its often up to us. With a mindset shift, we can bask in its light and warmth rather than obsess over its less pleasant aspects. In my book Proverbial Beauty, I recount my first encounter with the now-famous psychology experiment conducted by Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons at Harvard University. You may have seen their video, in which several people pass basketballs back and forth.Viewers are instructed to count how many times the white-shirted players pass the ball. The video ends, and a caption appears on the screen. It reads: The correct answer is 15 passes. But did you see the gorilla?I was one of the 50% who failed to see the man in the gorilla suit walk between the players, face the camera, thump his chest, and then wander out of view. The astonishing lesson is that we see what were looking for and dont see what were not looking for.It works the same way with attitude.A positive mindset shift can literally change our perception of reality. What that does not mean is being Pollyanna. Ignoring problems by pretending that everything is wonderful is a formula for disaster. On the other hand, focusing on problems without seeing the bigger picture encourages us to catastrophize, which leads to self-destructive, self-fulling prophecy. This is all too evident in politics: Liberals tend to focus on a better world that could be, while conservatives focus on a better world that once was. Too often, both end up negating all that is good in the world as it is, which accelerates the advance of social disintegration and cultural chaos. In business, its exactly the same.Lamentations of gloom and doom create a toxic haze of hopelessness, helplessness, and foreboding.Conversely, when you celebrate wins with an eye toward constant betterment you create a culture that is both energized and enthusiastic.Striking a balance between appreciation for what is good and aspiration for what could be better does not involve mind games or doublethink. It simply requires recognizing what is working to contemplate building on what we already have. This is why leaders must foster an atmosphere of gratitude and transparency. Here are three simple strategies for just that:Devise creative and continuous ways to show employees and team members appreciation for their efforts and contributions.Put in place gentle but continuous reminders celebrating genuinely positive elements in your culture.Solicit input for pending decisions, then explain why and how those decisions have been made.King Solomon teaches:As water reflects one face to another, so too does the heart of one person to another. The more we focus on seeing the good, the more we project positivity to those around us.And the more we project what is good in our world to others, the more they will reflect that good back to us.

  • MODA ramps rooftop garden along Calgary multifamily housing
    www.dezeen.com
Local architecture studio Modern Office of Design + Architecture has wrapped a multifamily housing development in wood siding and topped it with ramped roof gardens in Calgary, Alberta.Known as GROW, the project includes 20 residential units and a 0.6-acre (0.24 hectares) urban farm in a "seamless milieu that blurs interior and exterior, as well as private and public space".MODA has created a housing complex with a ramped rooftop garden in Calgary"In a world where 'housing' is slowly succumbing to a tool of capital, GROW hits the pause button, asking for more of where and how we live communally in urban environments," the Modern Office of Design + Architecture (MODA) team said. The four-storey building zigzags up from the ground in alternating bands of vertical wooden boards, in natural and blackened finishes, both punctuated with black-framed windows. It is covered by vertical planks of woodAbove the ground floor which is modulated with stoops along the streetside the roofline ramps up as the levels stack with a thin metal railing guiding the ascent. On the other side of the rectangular building, private terraces run the length of the facade, while embedded balconies are wrapped in rich-toned wood. The roofline ramps up as the floor stackThe ramps form an urban farm with rows of large planter boxes. The deck made of light-toned wood planks serves as a place for residents to enjoy a semi-private moment outdoors while in Calgary's inner city. The ramps are covered in plantersThe lush garden beds add textured blocks of green to the space.Inside, the housing units range from 450-square foot (42-square metre) studio to 600-square foot (56-square metre) condos and from 1.5-storey lofts to two-storey townhomes and have white walls and neutral flooring, using the greenery outside to add colour to the spaces. The back of the building has recessed wood-lined patios"This arrangement potentially places a retired couple next to a young family with children, or a single student next to a young professional, building resilience and social connections through proximity," the team said.Rather than confining moments of interaction for the residents only to places like the mailbox or elevator, MODA created a place where the residents could participate in a collective activity: urban farming. The building features multiple different housing typologies to facilitate diverse communityResidents across generations and demographics work together to care for the garden and sell harvested produce."This granular approach to place-making is critical to building resilient communities as we navigate increasing social division, and the severe health impacts of social isolation," the team said.Read: JSa and Mta+v create housing complex in Mexico City with three towersThe design prioritises "social engineering" and community building over the prevalent cost-cutting bottom lines of speculative housing development."If GROW's approach to 'social-engineering' were to become more prevalent in our inner-city communities, and we were to focus on building social capital in tandem with real estate capital, we could create more equitable and inclusive inner-city urban spaces; schools, community centres, and grocery stores that serve multiple purposes by design," the team said. The studio prioritised "social engineering" for the projectNearby, other large-scale projects that opened recently include the largest convention centre in western Canada by Populous, Stantec and S2 Architecture, complete with a sweeping copper-coloured canopy, and a recreation centre with an indoor park by Dialog. The photography is by Ema Peter Photography.Project credits:Architecture: Modern Office of Design + Architecture, Dustin Couzens, Ben Klumper, Nicholas Tam, Cara TretiakInterior design: Modern Office of Design + Architecture, Cara TretiakLandscape architecture: Modern Office of Design + Architecture, Nicholas TamUrban Farming consultant: YYC Growers, Rod OlsonEnergy modelling: EMBE Consulting Engineers, Moortaza Bhaiji, Paul CaicedoEnvelope/sustainability engineering: Williams Engineering, Hillary DavidsonCivil engineering: Richview Engineering, Robin LiStructural engineering: Wolsey Structural Engineering, Danny WolseyMechanical/electrical engineering: TLJ Engineering Consultants , Kevin VigBuilder: RNDSQR, Al DevaniClient: Andrei MetelitsaThe post MODA ramps rooftop garden along Calgary multifamily housing appeared first on Dezeen.

  • This Spectacular Semi-Autonomous Off-Road Rescue Vehicle was designed for the US Army
    www.yankodesign.com
When stuck in a dangerous situation miles away from habitation, search and rescue is the only hope for a stranded person. A lot of effort has been put into developing such vehicles that have to be capable on multiple fronts. All-terrain capabilities and emergency gear are on top of this list. Add semi-autonomous capabilities to the equation and youve got a vehicle that lets the driver concentrate on providing first aid when every second counts.Meet Deep Orange 15, a semi-autonomous search and rescue vehicle developed by Clemson Universitys Department of Automotive Engineering students. The all-terrain vehicle promises enhanced safety in the most precarious scenarios. Its capabilities dont stop on semi-autonomous features, as the vehicle can drive back to the designated emergency center with two injured people on board while the driver can help in the rescue efforts in a natural disaster-struck location.Designer: Clemson University Department of Automotive EngineeringThe robust rescue vehicle designed for the US Armys Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) comes with an advanced LiDAR and camera setup to map the terrain to create a safe route to help the rescue workers. Deep Orange 15 has a hybrid-powered drivetrain with a diesel engine mounted on the chassis and four electric motors on the wheels. The diesel engine simultaneously runs the generator to feed the large battery pack. To traverse any terrain, the four-wheeler has an active suspension system.Safety during travel on not-so-smooth terrain creates a challenge for the transport of injured, hence, the vehicle comes with an advanced litter-loading mechanism. The rotating passenger seat further facilitates the safe transit of severely injured people. This project is a combined effort of the two organizations along with big brand names like Brembo, Fox Racing and North American Rescue. To improve the vehicles dynamics and function, modeling and simulation runs have also been performed for its use in military operations. In fact, the students working on the project have done an exceptional job, designing the vehicle in just 18 months keeping in mind the requirements of the elite forces of the US Army. The post This Spectacular Semi-Autonomous Off-Road Rescue Vehicle was designed for the US Army first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Spatial video camera concept lets you capture photos and videos hands-free
    www.yankodesign.com
The way we capture videos and view them has constantly been changing and along with that, mobile devices have also been evolving. With the introduction of spatial videos, we see brands like Apple trying to become the pioneer in this new form. Basically, this is a video that lets you view photos and videos as if you were there instead of looking at them with just a single fixed view. Its a more immersive form of 3D since youre able to turn your head and see different perspectives.Designer: Suosi DesignAs more people get into spatial videos, well see all kinds of tools that will be able to capture and view videos like these. One concept tool is called VISOO, a spatial video camera that you can to take videos that can later be viewed using devices like Apples iPhone 15 Pro. It is not a bulky camera at all as probably one of the things that will be taken into consideration when developing tools for this kind of video is that its easy to carry around. Based on the product renders, VISOO is a pretty light device that you can either carry around or attach to the accompanying glasses. For the handheld option, the cameras will be stored onto the battery case as you shoot your photos and videos. It seems theres also a tripod where you can attach the case to for times when you need to have it placed on something a little more stable. For the glasses option, the cameras are attached to the hinges so you can move around easily while capturing moments. Since this is still in the conceptual stage, theres no information about the quality of photos and videos that it will capture. And with spatial videos still in early days, theres still a lot to be discovered and explored for brands that are developing tools that can be used to enjoy capturing and viewing them.
