  • Activision confirms it has replaced Call of Duty Black Ops 6 voice actors during SAG-AFTRA strike

Activision confirms it has replaced Call of Duty Black Ops 6 voice actors during SAG-AFTRA strike"We respect the personal choice of these performers," Activision saidImage credit: Treyarch / Activision News by Vikki Blake Contributor Published on Dec. 19, 2024 Activision has recast some of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6's voice actors amid the SAG-AFTRA strike. After players noted characters William Peck and Samantha Maxis sounded a little different, voice actor Zeke Alton acknowledged that his performance of Peck in the Zombies mode appears to have been replaced. He has also been removed from the game's credits.Unlike film and TV actors, who can strike even if a project is in-production, a clause known as Side Letter Six permits work on interactive media to continue. And whilst members on daily contracts may choose to strike in solidarity, given Black Ops 6 was in development before July 2024 Activision is permitted to replace striking actors."To the best of my knowledge, that performance is not [mine]," Alton told Game Developer. "It's their character, and they can do with it what they please."My only concern is for my brand as a performer. Fans of the game have reached out to me because the lack of crediting [of the replacement actor] implies that it may still be me, which unfairly represents my abilities as a performer."I have no issue with Activision's actions with a character and IP that they own," Alton added. "I absolutely adore the creative team and the opportunity I've had to collaborate with them in the past. I sincerely hope to collaborate in the future once all performers are protected against generative AI abuse."In a statement to press, Activision said: "We respect the personal choice of these performers. Out of respect for all parties, we won't add new commentary about the ongoing negotiations with SAG-AFTRA. We look forward to a mutually beneficial outcome as soon as possible."Whilst the strike goes on for some, SAG-AFTRA announced a new agreement for video game localisation mid-November. The Independent Interactive Localisation Agreement will cover localisation of projects scripted and released in a foreign language and then dubbed into English. As part of the agreement, performers will receive AI protections and employment opportunities.

    www.theverge.com
Image: HBO The first season of Dune: Prophecy is about to wrap up but theres more on the way. Ahead of the finale on December 22nd, HBO has confirmed than the prequel series has been renewed for a second season. The show premiered in November, and takes place 10,000 years before the events of the Dune movies from Denis Villeneuve. It stars Emily Watson and Olivia Williams as two Harkonnen sisters who form the galaxy-defining sect known as the Bene Gesserit. If you just know the Harkonnens from the movies, theyre these monstrous villains who are very clearly the bad guys, showrunner Alison Schapker told The Verge about the series. But thats not where they started off, and this kind of story gave us a chance to complicate that understanding and dig into what made them that way.Theres no word on when to expect season 2, but its also not the only Dune project on the way: Dune 3 is in the works, as is a survival game set on Arrakkis.

  • Meet Moxin LLM 7B: A Fully Open-Source Language Model Developed in Accordance with the Model Openness Framework (MOF)
    www.marktechpost.com
The rapid development of Large Language Models (LLMs) has transformed natural language processing (NLP). Proprietary models like GPT-4 and Claude 3 have set high standards in terms of performance but often come with drawbacks such as high costs, limited accessibility, and opaque methodologies. Meanwhile, many so-called open-source models fail to fully embody the ideals of openness, withholding key elements like training data and fine-tuning processes and often applying restrictive licenses. These practices hinder innovation, reduce reproducibility, and complicate adoption across industries. Tackling these barriers is crucial for fostering trust, collaboration, and progress in the AI ecosystem.Introducing Moxin LLM 7BResearchers from Northeastern University, Harvard University, Cornell University, Tulane University, University of Washington, Roboraction.ai, Futurewei Technologies, and AIBAO LLC release Moxin LLM 7B to address these challenges, guided by the principles of transparency and inclusivity. Developed under the Model Openness Framework (MOF), it provides comprehensive access to its pre-training code, datasets, configurations, and intermediate checkpoints. This fully open-source model is available in two versionsBase and Chatand achieves the highest MOF classification, open science. With a 32k token context size and features like grouped-query attention (GQA) and sliding window attention (SWA), Moxin LLM 7B offers a robust yet accessible option for NLP and coding applications. It is a valuable tool for researchers, developers, and businesses seeking flexible and high-performing solutions.Technical Innovations and Key BenefitsMoxin LLM 7B builds on the architecture of Mistral, enhancing it with an expanded 36-block design. This extension integrates GQA to improve memory efficiency and SWA to effectively process long sequences. The inclusion of a rolling buffer cache optimizes memory usage, making the model ideal for handling extended contexts in real-world applications. The models training process relies on carefully curated data sources, including SlimPajama and DCLM-BASELINE for text, and The Stack for coding. By leveraging Colossal-AIs advanced parallelization techniques, the model was trained on over 2 trillion tokens through three phases, each progressively increasing context length and refining specific capabilities. These design choices ensure several key benefits. First, the open-source nature of Moxin LLM 7B enables customization and adaptability across diverse domains. Second, its strong performance in zero-shot and few-shot evaluations demonstrates its capability to handle complex reasoning, coding, and multitask challenges. Finally, the models balance between computational efficiency and output quality makes it practical for both research and real-world use cases.Performance InsightsMoxin LLM 7B has undergone rigorous evaluation against comparable models. In zero-shot settings, it outperforms alternatives like LLaMA 2-7B and Gemma-7B on benchmarks including the AI2 Reasoning Challenge, HellaSwag, and PIQA. For example, the fine-tuned version achieves an impressive 82.24% on PIQA, marking a significant improvement over existing state-of-the-art models. The models few-shot evaluation results further underscore its strengths, particularly in tasks requiring advanced reasoning and domain-specific knowledge. Assessments using MTBench highlight the capabilities of Moxin Chat 7B as an interactive assistant, achieving competitive scores that often rival those of larger, proprietary models.ConclusionMoxin LLM 7B stands out as a significant contribution to the open-source LLM landscape. • Ubisoft Quietly Releases NFT Game Featuring Rayman
    www.ign.com
Did you know Rayman is in a new Ubisoft video game this week? Neither did we.As reported in Stephen Totilo's newsletter, Game File, Ubisoft quietly released a new game this week called Captain Laswerhawk: The G.A.M.E.. This new release was hardly advertised or given the kind of showy spotlight reserved for major releases, and it might have something to do with how this is a Web 3 game that uses cryptocurrency and the blockchain. Remember those? You may also remember the name Captain Laserhawk as it's based on the Netflix animated series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix. This was an animated show based off of Far Cry: Blood Dragon, which was a DLC based on Far Cry 3.PlayIGN's Twenty Questions - Guess the game!IGN's Twenty Questions - Guess the game!To start:...try asking a question that can be answered with a "Yes" or "No".000/250Captain Laserhawk (the game, not the show) is apparently a top-down multiplayer shooter available on PC, and features characters from the show as well as Rayman, Ubisoft's beloved, and missing, platform mascot hero. You can read Totilo's full impressions of Captain Laswerhawk: The G.A.M.E. over on Polygon where he details the need to purchase an NFT to play the game at all. It sounds quite tedious, and the actual gameplay doesn't have me reaching for my cryptowallet anytime soon.Ubisoft was one of the first major videog ame companies to go in on NFTs and blockchain, launching its own series of NFTs back in 2022. Ubisoft also tried to launch Web 3 guns and armore in Ghost Recon Breakpoint for players to sell and trade. At a DICE conference I attended around then, I even heard a talk from Ubisoft about their excitement over the potential of the blockchain.Ubisoft has since stopped talking about Web 3 and blockchain, much like the rest of the industry as NFTs have gone the way of the non-fungible dinosaur. But it seems that Ubisoft did have one more game tied to Web 3 in the pipeline and decided to quietly release it this week. Meanwhile, the wait for another Rayman game continues.Matt Kim is IGN's Senior Features Editor. You can reach him @lawoftd.

  • Doctor Who Christmas Special Review Joy to the World
    www.ign.com
"Joy to the World" premieres Wednesday, December 25 on Disney+.2024s Doctor Who Christmas Special, "Joy to the World," masterfully blends the shows signature whimsy with heartfelt storytelling, delivering a cozy, deeply human tale about the transformative power of friendship. Anchored by a lively yet thoughtful time-bending adventure, and featuring Nicola Coughlans charming turn as guest companion Joy, the special leans into its festive cheesiness so earnestly that it feels equally magical and moving.Steven Moffats excellent script is central to the episodes success. Returning after his standout season 1 episode, Boom, former showrunner Moffat showcases his mastery of dialogue, balancing sharp wit with poignant sincerity. The story begins at a breakneck pace, throwing viewers straight into high-energy chaos within the Time Hotel, a futuristic holiday destination offering access to all of human history on Christmas Day. The concept is quintessentially Doctor Who: wildly imaginative and fun, yet deeply tied to human curiosity. From its dazzling blend of futuristic opulence and festive warmth to its eccentric clientele, the Time Hotel feels like the perfect quirky setting, tailor-made for the series. Moreover, its great finally having a somewhat solo adventure with Ncuti Gatwas 15th Doctor. While season 1 touched on the Doctors struggles with his vulnerability, "Joy to the World" fully unpacks these layers, offering a rare glimpse into the Time Lords emotional complexity. Gatwas performance is once again a standout, capturing the loneliness and self-reflection of a Time Lord who rarely slows down to process their emotions. Its hard not to notice how emotional and tear-jerky Gatwas Doctor can get, even at the strangest times, but in this episode, it feels entirely warranted. One of my favorite moments is when he stops mid-adventure to berate himself, quite literally in the most timey-wimey way possible. Joy to the World starts in a hurry, but its the more personal moments between The Doctor and the supporting cast that truly resonated with me. Each wholesome scene imbues the episode with an intimacy that consistently surpasses the typical holiday fare. While I enjoyed the rebooted introductory season of Doctor Who on Disney+, it was relentlessly fast-paced throughout, leaving little time to breathe or settle into things. There were just nine episodes two of which are Doctor-lite outings with minimal screen time for Gatwa so its a delight to finally get some time just to hang out with my favorite alien.Doctor Who "Joy to the World" GalleryIts not a 100% solo adventure for The Doctor, however, as the companion for a day, Joy (Nicola Coughlan) also features prominently throughout. The warmth and relatable energy Coughlan previously brought to Bridgerton and Derry Girls fits so comfortably into a Christmas special, with her journey and The Doctors mirroring the episodes themes of connection and rediscovery. (She provides a perfect foil for the Doctors introspection.) Interactions between The Doctor and the side characters like Joy are especially touching, reminding us that despite its sci-fi core, Doctor Who is at its best when it grounds the chaos of adventures in time and space in a sense of humanity. Fully embracing its sentimental side, Joy to the World blends much-needed character work with a dash of festive magic, standing as one of the shows best holiday episodes. While Moffats tendency to botch convoluted endings has been a serious bugbear of mine in the past, Joy to the World sees him at the top of his game. The ending, while still undeniably cheesy, fits the spirit of a Christmas special perfectly. Its delightfully heartwarming the kind of conclusion that leaves you smiling, even if you roll your eyes a little along the way.

  • Glory: The Moment That Won Denzel Washington His First Oscar
    www.denofgeek.com
Only a single tear rolls down his cheek. In perhaps the most emotionally harrowing and poignant moment of Edward Zwicks GloryDenzel Washingtons face that breaks viewers. It is even easy to mistake the tear as what won Washington his first of two Oscars (so far). Hence why some have dubbed the moment his signature move, a claim Washington has forcefully and rightly dismissed. And yet, it isnt the tear that makes the scene of Private Silas Trips flogging so heartbreaking; its everything else Washington is doing in the moment, which stands starkly and diametrically opposed to that small bit of sentimentality. Its a devastating portrait of a man in a single, unblinking glance, and it turned a theater kid from upstate New York into a movie star. Its why, among other reasons, we keep returning to Glory after all these decades.Released 35 years ago this month, Glory remains arguably the greatest movie ever made about the American Civil War. And Washington is one of the chief architects of the movies legacy. Already a talented Broadway actor when he was cast in the film, Washington had previously made in-roads in Hollywood after doing phenomenal work in Norman Jewisons adaptation of A Soldiers StoryCry Freedom (1987). The latter was a movie that turned the life of the murdered anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko into something of a white savior narrative about his biographer.Admittedly, Glory came close to making similar mistakes. While beautifully written by Civil War buff Kevin Jarre (also a forgotten, unsung hero on Tombstone), Jarre made no secret about how he was inspired to write the film by a famed monument to Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment in the Boston Common. It is the same gallant work of art which is revealed in intimate detail during Glorys ending credits. The son of wealthy and passionate abolitionists from New England and the man who would command the first Black infantry in United States historyleading them all the way to his death on the shores of South CarolinaShaw is deserving of every bit of commendation he earns. But the story of the first Black men allowed to fight for their freedom in a war waged over Americas Original Sin, the story of Glory both as a film and an idea, should never be the white mans alone.Yet Glory was almost that movie. The film is still told largely from Shaws point-of-view and is played on the screen with extreme self-doubt and lamentation over his merit by Matthew Broderick. The movie begins with Shaw barely surviving the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest day during the war, and afterward being told of the Emancipation Proclamation. We are likewise introduced to the real political power force over the 54ths creation, Frederick Douglass, from Shaws limited perspective.Apparently much and more of Jarres original screenplay was intended to be Shaws story. Meanwhile the actual lives and miseries of the Black men who fought and died by Shaws side were fairly tertiary, with most of them inaccurately being depicted as former enslaved men who escaped the Antebellum South. In actuality, most of the real 54th were freedmen born in Massachusetts and other Union states. Glorys historical embellishment on this particular point survives into the final film and director Zwicks rewrites of the shooting script.Nonetheless, Zwicks focus proved far more astute and egalitarian than originally intendedso much so he recently revealed Brodericks manager and mother made a lot of noise on the actors behalf before production all the way up to seeing a cut of the film where entire subplots about Shaws school days with fellow white officer Major Cabot Forbes (Cary Elwes) and just about every scene between Shaw and his mother (Jane Alexander) were deleted. This was not done by malice on Zwicks part; it was done because he realized that the power of the 54ths sacrifice is that they were literally sacrificed. To prove their valor and worth to the Union Army, these Black men, led by Shaw, needed to volunteer for essentially a suicide mission across the walls of a fort that was never taken. And they did this while fighting to preserve a Union that had left millions like them in bondage for nearly a century, and which still refused to give them the vote or the full rights of citizensin fact, the Emancipation Proclamation didnt even apply to the border states who sided with the North. This is the story of the Black men, be they born free or runaway slaves. Men embodied by the likes of Thomas Searles (Andre Braugher), who as a childhood friend to Shaw represented what was much more of the 54ths fighting force; and also men like Morgan Freemans John Rawlings, Jihmi Kennedys Jupiter Starts, both of whom were born in bondage and risked surrendering their body again to the whip and lash should they be captured alive or lose this war and men like Denzel Washingtons Silas Trip.Which brings us back to that pivotal scene in the movie that elevated Washington to the rarified heights of movie stardom and Oscar winner. In this fateful cinematic moment, Trip has been captured after going AWOL. Brodericks vacillating Shaw is pressured by his blatantly racist drill sergeant (John Finn) to flog Trip in front of the whole regiment for desertion; a punishment Shaws subordinate Forbes is horrified by due to the heinous connotations of whipping a Black man, particularly in a military regiment meant to champion the end of slavery. Without bothering to ask why Trip was discovered away from his tent, or to know the full extent of the situation, Shaw agrees to have Trip flogged in order to maintain what he believes is discipline and order.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox! After the order is given, Washington throws the shirt off his back like it were just one more chain he was eager to strip off. In the process, he reveals a back long butchered by a spiders web of scars. The look of contempt Washington gives right into the camera, and right into Shaws soul, challenges you to not look away. He is saying, what is one more beating from a white man? That is at least how Trip wants to appear in the moment. Yet as we watch the sequence play out, there is more than just defiance in Washingtons face. There is also a beleaguered pride in his ability to see right through the bigotries of an oppressive system, even here in relative freedom of the North, and perhaps a pang of sorrow too. The tear reveals the humanity beneath the pridethe truth that all men, no matter how righteous, can bleed. It betrays a question still in search of a final answer: what does true freedom in America look like for a Black man? Before this fateful moment, weve been attuned to Trips bleak pessimism, even when it is so charismatically and gregariously played by Washington. The film pits his character against Braughers freedman Thomas as if this is a clash between a cynic and idealist; the malcontent and the problem-solver. For many white viewers in 1989, and perhaps now, it is easier to sympathize with Thomas, the kind and good-natured man who is introduced as Shaws boyhood chum. He is belittled and demeaned by men like Trip, who in lesser hands might come across as little more than a bully. No one should make that mistake. It happens, as underscored by the times Washington is still perplexed when white journalists ask why Trip is so hard to like, but there is another, richer way to read Trips dichotomy. The character is not cynical. He is realistic, and Washington imbues that practicality with swaggering authenticity that is unbowed, but not necessarily unbroken. Granted, there were not many former enslaved men in the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, and there werent any who were flogged for desertion (that manner of punishment was banned in the Union Army in 1861, several years before the film is set). But while inaccurate, the scene is painfully truthful. A well-intended and even compassionate white man is bent by the system to do the oppressive, racist thing because it is easier, and the Black man bears the agony of the mistake. It is up to Washingtons eyes alone to communicate the weight of this injustice, and he shrewdly refuses to play it like a victim. There is neither fear nor anguish in the face, just bitter recognition of a Black mans reality in America, be it in the 19th or 20th century. According to the actor, even the tear was real, a byproduct of the fake whip being wet and actually hurting as it tore into his back. (Hence his disdain for the tear being called a signature move.)Washington plays Trip like so many other of his great performances, wise and unburdened by pretense or delusions of decorum. He knows what time it is, even if it hurts like all goddamn hell.Read more One of the powers of Glory is that despite being largely told from the white mans perspective, it admits to the fundamental limitation and flaw in such a prism. Shaw learns that Trip was not deserting, nor that he is the troublemaker the drill sergeant and apparently some white viewers believed. He was searching for shoes, because Shaws army was letting the mens feet freeze in the rain and snow due to the color of their skin.Shaw responds by doing the right thing, but it doesnt make him and Trip friends. In fact, the only time Trip lets his guard down in the film, in the scene where Washington plays the character with true sentimentality, is when he is surrounded by other Black men aware theyre probably about to die the next day. As the men around them sing a hymn, our two ideological opponents, Washingtons Trip and Braughers Thomas, are the two most moved and awkwardneither prepared to be so vulnerable. Still, they sing all the same. The next day they die too, including with Trip beside Shaw. Both men die around a flag they never get to see wave above the ramparts of the fort. They are subsequently buried together. The two were never friends, and they never could fully understand the others perspective, which came to a violent tragic head at the end of the whip, but they both gave their last full measure to make a better world. And the fact we know Trip did this after seeing the unsparing truth in Washingtons eyes, makes that shared final destination between the men all the more piercingand gallant that they rushed up a hill together without ever seeing the promised land on the other side.

  • Creature Commandos Just Redefined Weasels Suicide Squad Origin Story
    www.denofgeek.com
This article contains spoilers for Creature Commandos episode 4.In the post-credit scene of James Gunns first DC outing The Suicide Squad, we see that one of the team members didnt live up to the groups name. Weasel is still alive, free to scurry back out into the night. To the viewers of the movie, Weasels fate was a very, very bad thing. Sure, he may seem harmless and sure, hes played by the lovable Sean Gunn. But he ended up in the Squad because he did very bad things. Namely, he killed 27 children.Thats dark, even for the nasty things that have happened in Gunns DC run so far, which includes The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and Creature Commandos. Yet, in all of the press leading up to the premiere of Creature Commandos, including a conversation with Den of Geek, Gunn and the shows stars have said that Weasel is their favorite character. Sean Gunn even went so far as to tell Den of Geek that he didnt think Weasel had an ounce of evil in him.How could they say that about a creature imprisoned for the murder of children? With the fourth episode of Creature Commandos, we finally get the answer. Chasing Squirrels delves into Weasels backstory. In-between prepping for trial with his lawyer (voiced by Linda Cardellini, who previously worked with Gunn playing Velma in Scooby-Doo), a group of neglected children find Weasel while playing in an abandoned school. The outcasts form a community, with Weasel finally discovering people who accept him and the kids getting to have the childhood denied to them.It all goes wrong when a passerby notices the kids playing with Weasel. Mistaking their horseplay for an attack, the passerby calls the authorities, but also grabs a gun to help the kids himself. Between the mans fear and the kids playing recklessly with fire, a boiler explodes, killing many of the kids instantly. Worse, the authorities confuse Weasels attempts to rescue the survivors as a further attack, and they prevent him from saving anyone. In the end, all 27 die, Weasel taking all of the blame.Chasing Squirrels continues the Creature Commandos model of revealing that its main monsters have far more humanity than previously expected. On one hand, theres nothing too novel to a story that shows we misunderstood a good person for something horrible after all Frankensteins Monster is a character on the show. On the other hand, the further context gives us more insight into the DC Universe that Gunn is making with DC Studios co-head Peter Safran. Its been remarked by many that Gunns superhero movies, excellent as they are, tend to be edgier and nasty. Remember, one of the high points in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 involved Yondu slaughtering a bunch of people. So its a bit odd that he would take the reins on Superman. And even though the first trailer to Superman looks (and feels!) amazing, the guts and insults in Creature Commandos revives those questions.Yet, Creature Commandos is as much about our limited judgments as it is everything else. As Chasing Squirrels shows, with its reveal of Princess Ilanas true plan, goodness and badness isnt skin deep. And if thats not something Superman would say, I dont know what is.Creature Commandos streams every Thursday on Max.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

  • From the Archive: This Bucolic Hudson Valley House Is Total Winter Bliss
    www.elledecor.com
This article originally appeared in the December 2009 issue of ELLE DECOR. For more stories from our archive, subscribe to ELLE DECOR All Access.Marcel Proust made us aware that even the most seemingly insignificant sensory experience can trigger important memories. For him it was a madeleine and a cup of linden tea. For me there is nothing quite like the satisfying crunch of fresh snow beneath the tires as I turn on to the long driveway of North Creek Farm, with its majestic alle of century-old maple trees. Silhouetted against the snow are two large red barns, a family of golden-haired Shetland cows, Nubian goats, miniature donkeys, and woolly sheep. By the time I pass the icicle-encrusted winter gardens and pull up to the white 1860 Georgian manor house, my children and I are full of joyous memories of being home for the holidays. William WaldronThe living rooms tufted-leather armchairs are from John Rosselli Antiques and Decorations; the ottoman, which is covered In a vintage kllim, and the 19th-century painting are both from Myrtle.North Creek Farm is the Hudson Valley weekend getaway shared by my mother, Dolores Barrett, and my stepfather, Edward Klein, who bought the house and its 56 acres on a total lark nearly seven years ago, after I had stumbled on an enticing magazine ad for a gentlemans farm.We weren't even house hunting, Dolores remembers. At the time she owned a place in Bridgehampton, Long Island, where she and Ed maintained a glamorous-and hectic-social life. But the photos of bucolic North Creek Farm spoke to them both, so they drove up to take a peek. William WaldronIn the game room, Regency chairs from Yale Burge Antiqus surround a table from Mill House Antiques & Gardens; the walls are covered in a Bennison linen.I immediately fell in love, says Dolores, whose sense of style and exacting eye for detail served her well during her eight years as vice president of public relations for Polo Ralph Lauren. Id always wanted a place far back from the road, with unforced landscaping. The house and its setting were not ostentatious, yet they had a kind of innate elegance and dignity. For Ed, the former editor in chief of The New York Times Magazine who now contributes to Vanity Fair and writes best-selling biographies, a tranquil place to wind down, work, and be with his family was irresistible. It's a very rural area surrounded on all sides by farms-inspirational for a writer, he says. Dolores and I knew instantly that this magical place would be the ideal gathering spot for our grandchildren.William WaldronA brass chandelier by Vaughan Designs hangs above an heirloom dining table; the chairs are upholstered in a Cowtan & Tout fabric. They made an offer then and there. It was completely unlike them to do something so impulsive and was thrilling for the rest of the family, which now numbers four adult children and seven grandchildren. Our clan is a modern one: step-parents, step-siblings, cousins. and step-cousins all mingled together. Both Christmas and Hanukkah are celebrated at North Creek Farm. Many of us are in the media, and dinner discussions often turn into heated debates, while pajama-clad children run in and out, seeking attention or another lollipop. The interiors needed to embrace this raucous spirit. And given its year-round use, the house had to transition seamlessly from Thanksgiving to Christmas to the Fourth of July, from corn-on-the-cob casual to my mother's famously chic, formally decorated holiday tables. William WaldronThe vent hood is by Broan, and the dishwasher is by Bosch. Rob Southern, a Manhattan-based interior designer, was the perfect choice to help Dolores implement her dream of a refined yet relaxed country home. It's a place to connect. But let's face it, Southern says, families work best when members are able to have private time as well as public time. As much as I wanted it to feel farm like, its for writers and avid readers, so every room had to support many functions, with a surface for a laptop and good lighting to read by. Everything had to be child-friendly, but also have the ability to close off and be private. Each room has a lovely view, either of the lake, the barns and paddocks, or the extensive gardens. Southern capitalized on this by bringing natural motifs indoors, in both colors and patterns. "The outside really dictated the inside, he says. Dolores, Ed, and I wanted to retain tradition, but without being overly historical or too literal. William WaldronIn the primary bedroom, the Sheraton-style bed, a family heirloom, is dressed in a skirt of a Travers print that Is also used for the curtains; the lamps are from Myrtle, and the etching is by Caio Fonseca. Southern used textiles have references to the past, but in a modern palette. In the game room"the site of Monopoly marathons, my daughter Annalises fashion shows, and my son Jack's chess games with Pa (his nickname for Ed)," Southern saysthe walls are upholstered in an 18th-century design of birds and flowering branches, updated in a sophisticated watery blue and beige. He anchored the living room with a bold crewel on two walls. It has a handcraftiness to it, a nod to the time the house was built, he says, but it feels fresh on the walls. William WaldronA guest room is sheathed in Cowtan & Touts Stria wallpaper; the firms Ferns linen is used for the headboard, which was designed by Southern, as well as for the shades and the wing chair. Throughout, family antiques are mixed with modern elements, a reflection of his parents' eclectic taste. A Sheraton-style tester bed in the master bedroom is flanked by a pair of overscale contemporary ambercolor glass urn lamps and offset with a Caio Fonseca print and a vivid geometric American needlepoint rug. With iOS 18.2, Apple supercharged AirTags with a new feature called Share Item Location. This feature lets you share the location of a lost AirTag or Find My network accessory with a trusted third party. As part of the launch of Share Item Location, Apple is teaming up with airlines worldwide. Here are all the airlines that support this new featureAs weve covered before, the Share Item Location feature lets you generate a link to the location of a lost AirTag or other Find My network accessory. Through this link, a third party can view the location of the lost item to help you find it. The link will show the items location on an interactive map that automatically updates as the location changes. Theres also a timestamp that shows the most recent update. To generate a Share Item Location link, you just need to go to the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Here are all of the airlines that have implemented support for accepting location links from the Find My app: UnitedDeltaBritish AirwaysLufthansaAir CanadaAir New ZealandTurkish AirlinesAer LingusAustrian AirlinesBrussels AirlinesSwissEurowingsIberia AirlinesThis means that if you fly with one of these airlines and your luggage with an AirTag is lost or misplaced, you can share the location of that AirTag to help the airline find it. For example, United travelers can file a delayed baggage report in the United and attach a Find My link to that report. Once that link is submitted, United customer service agents can use it to expedite tracking down the misplaced luggage. Apple also touts several privacy protections that have been implemented alongside this new Share Item Location feature for AirTags: Location sharing automatically ceases when a customer reunites with their bag. The user can stop sharing their location at any time. The link will expire automatically after 7 days. The entire process is end-to-end encrypted and anonymous. This means no one, including Apple or accessory manufacturers, can access an items location. This is yet another new feature that makes AirTags a must-have product while traveling.
