Klauea Volcano Ends Year With Impressive Lava Fountains
Webcam images showing a line of fissures erupting lava fountains feeding a flow within the Klauea ... [+] summit caldera.USGSAccording to a news release shared by the USGS on their social media channels, an eruption has commenced within Kaluapele the summit caldera of Klauea volcano. The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is elevating Klaueas volcano alert level from ADVISORY to WARNING and its aviation color code from YELLOW to RED as this eruption and associated hazards are evaluated.Webcam images show a line of fissures erupting lava fountains feeding a flow within the summit caldera.Youtube- YouTubeThe eruption is occurring within a closed area of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. High levels of volcanic gases like water vapor, carbon-dioxide, and sulfur-dioxide, are the primary concern, as they can have far-reaching effects downwind of Klauea. Sulfur-dioxide can react with water vapor creating a volcanic haze also known as volcanic smog or vog. Vog can have negative health impacts, damage crops and create acid rain.Klauea is one of the best monitored active volcanoes in the world. The mountain is covered with scientific instruments, from ground sensors that measure the shaking of the mountain to tools that analyze the gases released from the volcanic vents.MORE FOR YOUKlauea's eruption style is generally dominated by a "harmless" effusive activity of lava pouring out from fissures, but the volcano can have phases of impressive explosive eruptions. In May 1924, about 60 explosions occurred sending fragments ranging from volcanic ash to large blocks the size of cars into the sky and falling back around the summit caldera. In the last 35 years Klauea volcano erupted in two places: at the summit caldera and at the Puu crater on the eastern rift zone. In May 2018, a large lava flow destroyed more than 700 residences on its path to the sea. This change between effusive and explosive activity of Klauea is quite unique. In most volcanoes, explosive eruptions are either primarily driven by rising magma pressure, steam/vaporized groundwater, or some combination of the two. But at Klauea, the explosive eruptions are driven by a "stomp-rocket mechanism."During an effusive eruption characterized by lava fountains and flows, the magma reservoir is gradually emptied. The rocky roof above itthe ground within the caldera at the volcano's summitnow lacking supports suddenly collapses, quickly increasing the pressure in the reservoir and squeezing gas and bits of rubble through the vents in Klauea's crater.A study published just a few months ago compared this mechanism to a stomp-rocket toy, where stepping on an air bag connected to a hose launches a projectile into the air.The USGS will continue to closely monitor Klauea and adjust the alert level/aviation color code accordingly. Should volcanic activity change significantly, a new Volcanic Activity Notice will be issued.

Ukranian Startup Is On A Mission To Scale Biodegradable Packaging
Biodegradable packaging from mycellium and agriculture waste produced by S.Lab for Loreal.S.LabA German pharmacist invented polystyrene in 1839. Today, the production of polystyrene produces more than 12.5 million metric tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, and 15 million metric tonnes are produced every year, with a less than 1% recycle rate.In 2016, Tetra Pak was the first company in the food packaging industry to have its climate impact reduction targets approved by the Science-Based Targets (SBT) initiative. One year later, in 2017, Tetra Pak had a 13% reduction in its overall climate impact despite a 19% increase in packages sold. The biodegradable packaging market was valued at $473.74 B in 2023 and is projected to reach more than $800 B by 2032.Scaling biodegradable packagingThe lodgement for a coffee machine using biodegradable packaging from mycellium and agricultural ... [+] waste from S.LabS.LabA Ukrainian startup, S.Lab, has been working to scale biodegradable packaging. The company was founded in 2021, but with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the company moved its production facilities to Mlaga, Spain.MORE FOR YOUJulia Bialetska, CEO and co-founder of S.Lab said they chose this area because the region is striving to become climate-neutral by 2030, actively investing in sustainability, fostering the development of related businesses, and serving as a convenient logistics hub.Bialetska says Spain is an agricultural country with a lot of agricultural waste, including hemp and linen, which the company uses in its production. The local government also provided S.Lab with a production premise for five years. In 2024, the company launched its first fully automated production line in Con, with a capacity of up to 30,000 units per month. Bialetska says this is a full production cycle: from purchasing waste from local farmers within a radius of 50 km from the production site to producing the packaging itself.Bialetska told Forbes that scalable biodegradable packaging solutions can be adapted for large-scale production to meet volume demands while adhering to environmental regulations and consumer preferences."These solutions must balance sustainability with functionality, ensuring no features are compromised while remaining safe for the environment," said Bialetska. From the forest and the fields to the labS.Labs leaned on nature when it developed its approach to biodegradable packaging using mycelium and agricultural waste."We borrowed the natural process of mycelium growth from nature as the baseline of our process," said Bialetska. "Mycelium is a network of mushroom roots, and it is rapidly growing, creating long white nets that bind anything that they grow on.""This mechanic could be compared to a spider that creates nets and twists them around something nutritious," she added. Bialetska says that, in their case, agricultural waste acts as a skeleton/matrix for the material, and mycelium is a glue that binds all the particles together."The main challenge was to transfer this process from the forest to the lab and then from the lab to the proper continuous manufacturing," said Bialetska. "For that, we developed our own hardware technology."Agricultural waste of hemp stems and linenHemp stems form the inside of S.Lab's biodegradable packaging. S.LabFrance cultivates the largest hemp crop in Europe, but Spain has a history of growing hemp for industrial uses, and today, hemp is grown across the Iberian peninsula."Normally, stems remain on the fields after the harvest or are thrown away after the processing as there is no use of this part of the plant," said Bialetska. "So instead of throwing them away, we take those stems and transform them into packaging that afterwards can be returned to nature and will fully biodegrade in 30 days in the soil."Hardware for continuous manufacturingS.Lab filed two European Union patents in 2024 for its continuous sterilization process and forming and shaping robot. Three new patents are in progress and are expected by Q4 2025. The company has several active packaging pilots with L'oreal, JTI, and Nespresso and is an approved supplier with L'oreal. Our continuous, chemical-free sterilization method and innovative robotic forming mechanism of mycelium-based packaging solve the main problem related to bio-based solutions, which is scalability, said Bialetska.Bialetska added that while other companies may offer solutions using materials like mycelium or agricultural waste, they can struggle to meet industrial-scale demands and rarely disclose their capacities."This is why our production numbers matter, they demonstrate our readiness and reliability, making us a viable partner for industries transitioning to sustainable packaging at scale, she said. "Our entire manufacturing process is controlled through advanced robotics, sensors, and computer vision, ensuring precision and reducing human error through real-time data monitoring and analysis.Bialetska says their production line can also adapt to diverse client needs, including custom designs and sizes, without adding to production costs."Our manufacturing technology is the first to produce mycelium-based packaging with precise 90 angles, mirroring the functionality of conventional packaging, which provides a lot of possibilities for packaging for various sectors," she added.S.Labs tech and production process can achieve up to three times the energy efficiency of traditional EPS production. "It is a closed-loop, energy, and water-efficient production, and this results in 90% lower CO2 emissions and 90% less water usage than polystyrene production," said Bialetska.Innovation at CES 2025Visitors to the S.Lab stand (Venetian Expo, Eureka Park, Hall G62659) at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2025 will be able to see S.Lab's production line prototype and mini-factory, which will also include a number of biodegradable packaging samples.Their mini-factory prototype is a self-contained 40-foot container featuring a built-in production line for on-site packaging production at customers' facilities."By providing mini production lines, we offer clients sustainable packaging produced at their own premises without disrupting their existing processes," said Bialetska.

Apple M5 chips to enter production in 1H 2025 with enhanced thermals and efficiency
Rumor mill: The Apple M5 SoC series will feature multiple chips, including the M5, M5 Pro, M5 Max, and M5 Ultra. They will be manufactured using TSMC's advanced N3P node, which entered the prototype phase earlier this year. The M5 and M5 Pro/Max are tipped to enter production in H1 2025 and H2 2025, respectively, while the Ultra will enter mass production in 2026. Apple insider and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed a slew of new information about Cupertino's upcoming M5-series processors. The new chips are expected to power a number of next-gen products, including MacBooks, iPads, and more.Kuo added that the M5 Pro, Max, and Ultra will use server-grade 2.5D packaging called SoIC-mH (System-on-Integrated-Chips Molding Horizontal), which will feature separate CPU and GPU designs to increase yield and improve thermal performance. Apple will be TSMC's largest SoIC customer, but other major chip designers, including AMD, AWS (Amazon), and Qualcomm, are also expected to use the new technology in their next-gen processors. The M5 lineup is expected to offer better performance than the M4 chips despite sticking to a 3nm process instead of upgrading to a 2nm node. They are also said to be more power efficient than their predecessors, meaning users can expect better battery life from their devices in addition to faster performance.Rumors suggest that the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and OLED iPad Pro will all get the M5 treatment between spring 2025 and H1 2026, but it's unclear whether the next-gen Mac mini will also be upgraded with the new chip at some stage. Devices powered by the flagship M5 Ultra are expected to hit store shelves in the second half of 2026.Apple launched its latest MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini powered by M4-series chips earlier this year, while the next-gen MacBook Air is expected to debut next spring. The Mac Studio and the Mac Pro with the M4 Ultra are tipped to launch later in 2025. The company is also expected to upgrade its AI servers to the M4 chips next year. These are currently powered by the M2 Ultra. // Related Stories

Some people decorate their tree together, others bake something or other. For some, though, the most meaningful part of the season is gathering around to watch a great movie. And no, we dont mean Wicked.Classic movies sometimes get a bad rap, in part because theyre old, and sensibilities were a little different when they were made. Even so, some of the best holiday movies ever made can most neatly be described as classics, and were recommending five of the very best for you to enjoy this holiday season.Recommended VideosWe also have guides to the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Max,andthe best movies on Disney+.RelatedMeet Me in St. Louis (1944) Official Trailer - Judy Garland, Margaret O'Brien Movie HDWhen she was great, there were few movie stars better than Judy Garland, and inMeet Me in St. Louis, her talents are on full display. The film focuses on four sisters living in St. Louis ahead of the 1904 Worlds Fair. The entire movie doesnt take place at Christmas time, but the movie does feature a section during the holiday season that includes Garland singing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, so that alone merits its inclusion here. As a whole, the film is a delightful, wistful look at the way your life can change over the course of a single year, anchored by Garland at her very best. You can watchMeet Me in St. Louison Max.IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE | Official Trailer | Paramount MoviesJimmy Stewart pops up on this list twice, but thats basically unavoidable. Its a Wonderful Lifewas not a hit upon its release, but it is almost without a doubt the greatest Christmas movie ever made. The film follows two employees (James Stewart and Margaret Sullivan) of a Budapest general store who cant stand each other in person, but find themselves entranced by the letters theyre exchanging anonymously. The joy of the movie is in the dramatic irony of knowing that these two bickering employees are meant for one another, and hoping that they realize it in time for the holiday season. The Godfather Part II at 50: Is this movie the greatest sequel ever made?
Table of ContentsTable of ContentsThe dual narratives are both compellingAl Pacino was robbedRobert De Niro gave one of his career-best performancesThe film stands as an artistic achievementSequels are a way of life in Hollywood, and theyve been around in some fashion since the dawn of cinema. But in 1974, it just wasnt common for an Oscar-winner for Best Picture to have a sequel two years later that won the same prize and more. Fifty years ago this month, The Godfather Part II changed the game for the industry and arguably surpassed The Godfatheritself. While many of The Godfather Part IIs contemporary films like The Towering Inferno have faded from pop culture, this movie continues to influence every crime epic that came after it. It set the bar so high for a sequel that not even The Godfather Part III could come anywhere close to this films heights. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Godfather Part II, well examine what makes the film resonate and determine whether its the greatest sequel ever made.Recommended VideosParamount PicturesDirector Francis Ford Coppola (Megalopolis) and The Godfather novelist Mario Puzo co-wrote the screenplay for The Godfather Part II, which effectively serves as both a prequel and a sequel to the first film. In the early years of the 20th century, young Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro) struggles to find his place as an Italian immigrant living in America. The narrative, starting in 1958, follows Vitos son, Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), as he settles into his role as the Don of the Corleone crime family.RelatedThe film intercuts between these two stories as we see how Vito slowly built his reputation and put together the first pieces of his empire, while Michael franticly tries to hold that same empire together as he faces betrayals from friends, allies, and even his own family. De Niro and Pacino dont have any scenes together in this movie, and Marlon Brando didnt reprise his role as Vito from the first film. Regardless, the link between the father and his son is felt across the years, and that keeps the audience invested in both of their stories.Paramount PicturesAs you might expect, Al Pacino was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars for his role in this film. He had previously been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Godfather, while Brando took home the Best Actor award for that film. As fantastic as he was in The Godfather, Pacino was even better in The Godfather Part II. Regardless, he lost the award to Art Carney, who won for his role as Harry Coombes in Harry and Tonto. All due respect to the late actor who also defeated Dustin Hoffman (Lenny) and Jack Nicholson (Chinatown) at the Oscars that year but Carneys performance isnt the one thats held up 50 years later. Pacinos intensity was riveting, and all traces of the good man that Michael used to be were long gone. This version of Michael is perpetually angry, sometimes desperate, and even occasionally lonely. Michael hasnt just become his father; hes transformed into something worse. As viewers, we witness some of the early sins of Vito Corleone in this film and they pale in comparison to things that Michael does by the time the final credits run.The Godfather: Part 2 (1/8) Movie CLIP - My Offer is Nothing (1974) HDMichael is a monster, and yet we cant help rooting for him to finish off his enemies and triumph in the end. Few performers can hold an audiences sympathy while playing a character like that. This was an Oscar-worthy turn by Pacino, even though it took him nearly two decades before he finally won Best Actor for Scent of a Woman in 1992.Paramount PicturesOne of the most striking things about young Vito is that De Niro initially plays him as a man without power. Most of his dialogue is in Sicilian, and Vito doesnt have much money or influence. Hes just scraping by like the rest of the immigrants in his neighborhood.Yet over time, we see the wheels turning in Vitos mind through De Niros face as he figures out how to change his fortune by seizing power where he can and by murdering someone who stood in the way of his rise. The Godfather Part 2 - Corleone Family in SicilyDe Niros take on his character wasnt as flashy as Pacinos or even his own role in Taxi Driver two years later. Instead, De Niro humanized young Vito while the script made him an underdog. His narrative also parallels Michaels, as both father and son set out to get their revenge. De Niro gave subtle nuance and depth to Vito that his on-screen son lost over time, and his performance was unforgettable.Paramount PicturesIn a seven-year period between 1972 and 1979, Coppola made The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, and Apocalypse Now, all three of which are widely recognized as some of the best movies ever made. It was kind of all downhill from there, especially if Megalopolis turns out to be Coppolas final film. The director made some good and even great movies between 1979 and now, but The Godfather Part II towers above the rest.Every aspect of this film works magnificently, from the staging and the performances to the choreography, the music, and more. Its a breathtakingly beautiful movie that feels uncommonly timeless. That may be why The Godfather Part II has never fully gone away from the public consciousness. How many times have you heard Pacinos iconic line, I know it was you, Fredo, in your life? The Godfather: Part 2 (7/8) Movie CLIP - Fredo's Death (1974) HDThe irony is that some contemporary critics trashed The Godfather Part IIbefore reappraising it after it was clear how the film was embraced by audiences. To date, the only other sequel to win an Oscar for Best Picture is The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Thats rarefied territory, but wed still call The Godfather Part II the greatest sequel ever made. Until something else comes along that can match its impact, this film will continue to wear that crown.Watch The Godfather Part II on Paramount+.Editors Recommendations
