Escape From Tarkov Wipe Plagued By Tech Issues Causing Lost Gearwww.forbes.comThe new Tarkov wipe has not got off to a good start. Credit: Battlestate GamesThe launch of the new Escape From Tarkov wipe and patch has been plagued by a range of technical issues that have caused players to lose gear, be able to access things that should be locked and struggle to actually get into a raid. After launching earlier today, the new Escape From Tarkov wipe and patch has been well received in terms of the new content added, but poorly received due to technical issues, with some streamers saying it is the worst wipe they have experienced in a long time. Not only are players having to deal with the usual wipe server issues, which are resulting in long queue times and frequent disconnects, but there are also some more serious tech issues. Many players around the world are reporting a lot of lag spikes and stutters as they play, which is something I have also experienced and is incredibly frustrating. Then, multiple players have reported losing gear and getting no rewards to extracting due to server issues, whereas others have died in a raid only to land back at the main menu with all their gear still in their inventory. One example is streamer Pestily, who lost a LedX due to the missing items bug that rewarded him XP for the previous raid he was on.MORE FOR YOUThese tech issues are not the only ones, as another appeared within the first few minutes of the wipe going live. In the patch notes for the Escape From Tarkov 0.16.0.0 update, it was announced that the flea market would be closed for the first two weeks of the wipe. This seems like a great idea on paper, that should solve one of the biggest problems Tarkov has had in recent wipes; the rapid progression hardcore players experienced. However, when the wipe first launched, some players discovered that instead of the flea market being off limits, it was in fact open for business. While this is unconfirmed, it looked like it was the same flea market from the end of the previous wipe, so there were a lot of very rare items available for sale on there, which obviously could give players who purchased rare items as major advantage. The game was taken offline and the flea market was wiped, removing it for the next two weeks, but it appears that players who purchased items were able to keep them. A secondary wipe likely would have been a better solution, given it was spotted within 15 minutes of the first players getting into the game, but that did not happen despite some speculation that it would. On the TarkovTV stream that was taking place at the time, game director Nikita Buyanov said the game was also the victim of a DDOS attack, however the timing for that seemed a little convenient when it happened minutes after the flea market issue was discovered. If you are yet to start the new Escape From Tarkov wipe it might be a good idea to wait a day or two for the issues to be resolved and then start playing, as it will likely be a much smoother experience then. If you want to wait until the end of the year, then you can also earn some Twitch Drops that could make your first raids a lot easier given the rarity of items that are being given out.0 Commentaires ·0 Parts ·109 Vue

Greenlands Mineral Heritage in the Trump Erawww.forbes.comPanoramic landscape of abandoned mining town of Ivittuut, Greenland gettyPresident Trumps quest to have the United States gain ground, through what might possibly be a leveraged purchase of Greenland from Denmark, is gaining momentum. What initially seemed like an atavistic aspiration after a stressful election is becoming a more serious prospect as Denmark announced a massive increase in security spending on Christmas eve. Alarmingly, the Russians have expressed support for Trumps suggestion as this would drive a wedge between the US and its European NATO allies. Further, it could also validate Russias interest in a repurchase of Alaska which many nationalists feel was an unfair sale price in the nineteenth century. While Trump is likely to fully defend Alaskas security, the scramble for polar resources is likely to get messier as the first U.S. Ambassador at large for the Arctic considers his future three months after senate confirmation. What is driving Trumps interest in Greenland is no doubt its minerals endowment and this is by no means a new motivation for U.S. security presence on the worlds largest island. For the past two years, I have been leading a U.S. National Science Foundation project to consider ways of redeveloping Greenland old mineral infrastructure for a warmer world. My doctoral student Thomas Hale conducted field work and consultative meetings on the island with reference to an old mining site that has a storied past linkage to American security interests which I discovered while doing research for a book titled Soil to Foil: Aluminum and the Quest for Industrial Sustainability. Aluminum is the most abundant metal in the earths crust but paradoxically it was among the last to be isolated for industrial use. The secret sauce that allowed for industrial exploitation of aluminum was a rare mineral called cryolite. The co-discoverer of this process of using cryolite was a Charles Hall, who was also the founder of the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa). The only known cryolite mine in the early part of the twentieth century was in Greenland. As demand for aluminum grew astronomically with the advent of military and commercial aviation, so too did the salience of Greenland. There was increasing anxiety about the dependence of the production process on this one single mineral source in a remote, isolated location. Researchers at Alcoa were tirelessly working to find a way to synthesize cryolite from more abundant primary materials. Finally in 1932, three researchers at Alcoa led by John Morrow filed a successful patent for the synthesis of cryolite from fluorospar (fluorite, or calcium fluoride) and sodium aluminate. Although fluorspar still needed to be mined, it was far more abundant and accessible, as was sodium aluminate. The availability of synthetic cryolite (sodium aluminum fluoride) began to reduce the demand for natural cryolite toward the late 1930s.However, during World War II, the critical need for aluminum demanded huge quantities of both natural and synthetic cryolite. The U.S. government thus built a navy base near the Greenland cryolite mine called Bluie West Seven. During the initial period of U.S. humanitarian aid to Greenland (1940), the cryolite mine was identified as the only sensitive military target in need of protection. In addition to fears of German attacks, there was also concern about labor unrest at the mine, and to allay these concerns a force of 15 U.S. servicemen were given discharges and then hired by the Cryolite Company. This wartime town, Kangilinnguit, is now a Danish military base. It is connected by a five-kilometer road to Ivigtut, which was subsequently renamed Ivittuut. The production of the mine peaked in 1942, when it mined and shipped 85,000 tons of cryolite to North American aluminum smelters.MORE FOR YOUIn December 2019, the Smithsonian journalist Katie Lockhart published an article about her visit to Ivittuut, which has now become a regular stop-off for Greenland tourist cruises. Her interview with Rie Oldenburg, a historian and head of education at Campus Kujalleq, a school in nearby Qaqortoq, Greenland, revealed that given security concerns, no photographs of Ivittuut were allowed to be taken during the war, and no one was allowed to write letters to family or friends for fear that the Germans would intercept them. Her visit took place during the presidency of Donald Trump, and when she asked local Inuit about what it was like during the war and their relationship with Americans, they declined to answer, fearful that their responses would reflect poorly on the United States at a time when the president was openly mulling purchasing the island. The locals did indicate that American soldiers had left a remarkable testament to materialism behind that would shape modern Greenland consumer cultureSears, Roebuck and Company catalogs! Long before the ubiquity of Amazon Prime, these catalogs allowed Inuits and Danish Greenlanders alike to order name brand appliances, like General Electric stoves and refrigerators and boats that modernized the way of life in Greenland. The mine continued to operate with a 1,500-foot-long inclined tunnel and workings as deep as two hundred feet below sea level. The worlds only economically viable cryolite mine had produced 3.7 million tons of ore grading 58 percent cryolite by 1962, when it was officially declared depleted. Mining operations ceased, and only small crews remained to clean up the old dumps. By 1987, the town of Ivittuut was abandoned, and its infrastructure and quarrying cavity became heritage sites.Deep, complex, and dramatic stories of mineral availability and supply are inextricably linked to the history of human livelihoods and security. Cryolite became essential for aluminum production merely by acting as a solvent for aluminums primary ore and making it cost-effective to extract the metal by lowering the temperature, and hence the energy demand, for the reaction. It was that specific innovation of aluminum production that led to the development of a small Inuit village in the Arctic and even an American military base.Minerals as primary inputs to industry can muster such marvelous levels of influence that they can drive and transform the lives of individuals, communities, and countries. Yet, all this was possible in Ivittuut without the U.S. buying Greenland. For minerals that are needed for the green transition or for defense purposes such as rare earth metals, as well as Arctic environmental security imperatives, the United States can learn from our legacy of cooperation with Denmark. Greenland now has self-rule within the Kingdom of Denmark, and this should also be respected by the United States as well as all other countries that support self-determination of indigenous communities. We can have environmental security, mineral security and indeed human security without physical purchase or annexation through sensible diplomatic engagement.0 Commentaires ·0 Parts ·106 Vue

These are all the Macs that are expected to launch in 2025www.digitaltrends.comTable of ContentsTable of ContentsM4 MacBook AirM4 Mac StudioM4 Mac ProM5 MacBook ProiMac ProVision Pro 2We just got a fresh delivery of Macs in November with the M4 MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini and theres plenty more to come in 2025. If youre wondering which Mac to buy and when to buy it, youll need to know the latest rumors on whats coming in 2025. Buckle up, because theres a lot.We expect Apple to complete its full M4 update for the Mac lineup during the first half of the year and introduce the first M5 products toward the end of the year. If were lucky, we may even get a few surprises along the way.Recommended VideosLuke Larsen / Digital TrendsThe first product were getting next year is the M4 MacBook Air. It was originally expected to launch in the spring alongside a few iPad and iPhone products, but according to the latest information from Bloombergs Mark Gurman, we could be seeing it even earlier. Thanks to the accidental references to two 2025 MacBook Air models included in the macOS Sequoia 15.2 update this month, we know for sure that these Macs are coming. Like the M4 MacBook Pro, however, were not expecting any major design updates for these models it will essentially be an M3 MacBook Air refitted with an M4 chip.RelatedWill there be any other surprises to the update? Well have to wait and see, but if the rumors are true, it could land sometime as early as January.Mark Coppock / Digital TrendsThe current Mac Studio has an M2 Ultra chip and its feeling pretty old especially because the new M4 Pro Mac mini can beat it in some benchmarks. Luckily, an update is on the way around summer 2025, and it will be skipping the M3 chip and jumping straight to the M4 Max and yet-to-be-announced M4 Ultra. With the highest-end M4 chip fueling it, were expecting some serious power from the new Mac Studio, but we dont know much more than that. With a full two years between refreshes, its more likely that this Mac will come with some new features or design updates, but we dont have any concrete information yet.Brittany Hose-Small / AFP via Getty ImagesThe Mac Pro is another model currently equipped with the aging M2 Ultra, and since its meant to be the most powerful Mac available, it definitely needs an update. We havent heard much about the M4 Mac Pro except that Gurman thinks it will launch in the second half of 2025 and sport an M4 Ultra chip. This comes after a report that indicated that a more powerful M4 Extreme chip was canned for a future Mac Pro, so Apples most high-end desktop looks like it will stick with the M4 Ultra.Since Apple Intelligence is currently pushing its way into everything, it might be wise to expect an upgraded neural engine as well. The Pro Display XDR might be getting an update too, but some rumors suggest that it wont be releasing alongside the Mac Pro and will instead arrive in early 2026.Chris Hagan / Digital TrendsThe M5 chip is expected to have a staggered release, much like that of the M4, with the first products coming at the end of next year and the bulk coming in 2026. That means the MacBook Pro should get revamped with an M5 chip in around October or November 2025, in keeping with how the refreshes have rolled out in years past. Its way too early to expect any details on this model, but since the M4 MacBook Pro came with zero design changes, we think we deserve something a little more exciting this time (though there are already rumors to the contrary). Hopefully, industry experts like Gurman will provide us with plenty of new information over the course of next year. The overhaul of the MacBook Pro is still rumored to not launch until at least 2026, hopefully with the introduction of an OLED MacBook Pro and a thinner chassis. But again, thats probably not happening in 2025.Luke Larsen / Digital TrendsWhile the awesome color lineup of the M4 iMacs got plenty of people excited, many are still yearning for the return of a larger, more powerful variant. While we dont have a lot of solid information on this one, Gurman has suggested that Apple is still exploring the idea of bringing back the iMac Pro or a larger version of the iMac. There is a small chance that Apple could surprise us with a 2025 release, and launch an iMac Pro with options for an M5 Pro and M5 Max, but it seems more likely that well have to wait longer.Until then, the company seems happy to leave the replacement as a combination of the Mac mini or Mac Studio with the Apple Studio Display. Thats despite the fact that the Apple Studio Display still costs $1,600 on its own, even though you can buy OLED monitors for almost half the price. There havent been any rumors of an M5 iMac or Mac mini, but if Apple continues its upgrade cycle this year, the M5 would come to the MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini at the same time. Its not for sure, though, since the Mac mini missed the M3 refresh in 2023 and the iMac missed the M2 refresh in 2022.Digital TrendsLastly, there have been a few rumors that Apple will introduce the next evolution of the Vision Pro mixed-reality headset. Reports have indicated that Apple is working on both a proper Vision Pro 2 that advances the premium nature of the current model and a more affordable option that would just be called the Apple Vision. Its possible that one or both of these could launch in late 2025.That might sound like a fairly quick follow-up to a product that hasnt exactly been a commercial hit. The original Vision Pro was announced at WWDC 2023 but only launched in February 2024. However, Apple may want to try and quickly build back momentum, especially since 2025 is looking to be a big year for XR headsets in general. While we dont know which headset will launch in 2025 (if any), whatever we eventually get is expected to launch with an M5 chip and Apple Intelligence capabilities.Editors Recommendations0 Commentaires ·0 Parts ·97 Vue

Alan Truly / Digital TrendsCanon gave the Color imageClass LBP633Cdw an aerodynamic look with an angled profile thats lower at the front, making the top more accessible. The body is off white with a black upper panel. Its lighter than an all-in-one printer but still hefty at a little over 35 pounds. The footprint is 17 by 16.5 inches and it stands 11.3 inches tall, a good height for standing or seated use.The most eye-catching feature is the control panel thats at the top left. It looks like an old desktop calculator or adding machine. The display matches that aesthetic, a small 2.75-inch black-and-white LCD screen at a 55-degree angle that shows five lines of pixelated text. Below the display, theres a keypad that looks like it belongs on an old phone.Im not opposed to unusual controls. I really enjoyed the dial-based interface HP used on its Color LaserJet Pro 4201dw. The question is whether Canon made the Color imageClass LBP633Cdws design as functional as it is quirky.A flip-up panel on the top left of the Color imageClass LBP633Cdw hides a USB-A port that allows walk-up printing. The main paper tray holds 250 sheets in an easy-access removable drawer. Reports and charts look great.Inkjet printers have an advantage over laser printers when it comes to pictures. Still, the Color imageClass LBP633Cdw handles photos well. Colors are a bit muted but true to the original. For photographic quality borderless prints, a high-quality inkjet photo printer like Epsons EcoTank ET-8500 will handle vivid colors better. The Color imageClass LBP633Cdws thumb drive port design is convenient but the file selector is unintuitive. Photo by Tracey Truly / Digital TrendsCanons top-mounted thumb drive panel is easy to access. One press on the back of a panel pops up the front to reveal the USB-A port. Unfortunately, operation is a little confusing. The Color imageClass LBP633Cdw shows a list of files on the thumb drive, but after selecting one, nothing happens. I exited and tried again. After a few tries, I noticed an Apply option at the top of the list. After selecting documents, I had to scroll to the top and select apply before I could choose print settings and start printing. I only had about a dozen files on my thumb drive. I had to press the up arrow repeatedly to return to the top and apply my file selection. It was easier after the first try, but the controls would become annoying with a longer list. The Color imageClass LBP633Cdw has an awkward interface that uses Multi-tap entry like a late 1990s cellphone. Photo by Tracey Truly / Digital TrendsCanon didnt leverage its mobile app to assist in setting up the Color imageClass LBP633Cdw, making it an awkward introduction to the printer. After powering on, I selected language, location, and time, then skipped the remote management option since Im not sharing this printer with a workgroup. Thats all fairly standard. The on-screen instructions ended, but the printer wasnt visible in the Canon Print mobile app. Some printers show a Wi-Fi wizard as part of setup, but I had to dig a bit to find the Color imageClass LBP633Cdws wireless LAN settings. The printer found my Wi-Fi network and asked for the password. This is where I had trouble.Canon gave the Color imageClass LBP633Cdw a user interface (UI) Id expect from a cellphone from the late 1990s. There are four directional arrows, OK and back buttons, and a grid of telephone keypad buttons labeled with numbers and letter groups. Known as Multi-tap, pressing the same number repeatedly cycles through three or four letters. Pressing the 2 enters an A and pressing it twice enters a B. I dont really need my modern printer to have a nostalgic feel. After entering my Wi-Fi password, the Color imageClass LBP633Cdw couldnt connect. Each letter is quickly replaced with an asterisk * so I assumed I made an error. I repeated this process several times. Assuming it was a Wi-Fi issue, I made a phone hotspot and tried again without success. The Color imageClass LBP633Cdw requires several steps for each character of a Wi-Fi password. Photo by Tracey Truly / Digital TrendsAfter spending half an hour trying seemingly useless things and searching the internet, I came across the solution. I was entering uppercase letters. The UI is horribly unintuitive. Step one is selecting an entry mode: letter and number or symbol. Step two is choosing uppercase, lowercase, or number mode. Step three is multi-tapping one character or choosing symbol with the arrow keys. Those three steps are repeated for each character in my Wi-Fi password.I was relieved to finally see I was connected. With Wi-Fi set up complete, it was quick and easy to access the Color imageClass LBP633Cdw from my computers and mobile devices. It supports Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and even ChromeOS.The Color imageClass LBP633Cdw also supports a wired connection with a USB or Ethernet cable to a computer. I usually prefer Wi-Fi, but plugging in a cable would have been much faster.Canons Color imageClass LBP633Cdw has good document quality but color toner is expensive. Alan Truly / Digital TrendsAt $380, Canons Color imageClass LBP633Cdw is expensive for a color laser printer with a disappointing UI and mediocre photo quality. Canons excellent all-in-one imageClass MF654cdw is about the same price and includes a scanner and automatic document feeder.Still, it has good color document quality, and the Color imageClass LBP633Cdw worked well with my computers and phones. Another critical detail is toner costs, which can add up in a hurry in a busy office. The Color imageClass LBP633Cdw comes with starter cartridges that supply up to 910 black-and-white pages and 680 color pages. Thats about two-thirds full for black and a little over halfway for each color cartridge.Canon kept monochrome printing affordable. Each $72 standard cartridge yielding 1,350 pages and a $109 high-capacity cartridge providing 3,130 pages. That works out to a cost of 3 to 5 cents per page. Of course, there are fast and inexpensive monochrome laser printers like Canons imageCLASS MF275dw if you dont need color. The Color imageClass LBP633Cdw isnt the best choice for low-cost color documents. Each color cartridges costs $86 for 1,250 pages or $112 for a high-capacity cartridge that can print up to 2,350 pages. Since you need three cartridges to print in color, the cost per page skyrockets. Youll spend 14 cents to 21 cents for each color page.Canons Color imageClass LBP633Cdw has good monochrome and color document quality, and it prints photos with good color fidelity. The speed is good but not great. As a home office printer, it might be all you need, and there are some nice features like walk-up printing and a media tray for hassle-free printing on a label or envelope.Unfortunately, setup is awkward with the odd Multi-tap phone keypad. The UI also makes thumb drive navigation slow. At the list price of $380, Id recommend shopping around to find a good deal on a better printer. For a direct match to the Color imageClass LBP633Cdw, Id recommendBrothers HL-L3295CDW, a faster printer with low-cost toner and a color touchscreen thats much easier to use.0 Commentaires ·0 Parts ·100 Vue
