Table of Contents Tracking your heart rate while you train is beneficial if you need to keep your exertion in check. If you want the most accurate way to track your heart rate during intense exercise, chest strap heart rate monitors are the way to go. Smartwatches andfitness trackersare great, but if you want serious accuracy, a chest strap heart monitor is ideal. Plus, they come with an adjustable strap for comfort.Smartwatches typically measure your pulse at the wrist, which is an inherently less accurate approach. On the other hand, chest straps rely on using an electrocardiogram to detect the electrical signals from your heart, giving you a more precise picture of your heart's performance. More accurate data will mean you can see how your body reacts to certain workouts and habits, letting you improve your training efficiency. Our health and wellness experts spent hours testing various models to find the best options to wear during your next workout. Here are the ones that truly stand out, whether its for yourself or a holiday gift for a loved one. What is the best chest strap heart-rate monitor overall? The best chest strap heart-rate monitor will depend on your specific needs, like what type of activities you plan to wear it for. Our pick for the most comfortable is the Wahoo Tickr X, while we recommend the MyZone MC Switch for beginners.Best chest strap heart-rate monitors of 2024 Photo Gallery 1/1 $99 at Amazon $100 at Walmart Pros Adjustable strap that you barely feel when it's on Easy to connect to app Bluetooth and ANT Plus connection Good for multiple forms of activities Cons Expensive May not give all the data for indoor activities $99 at Amazon $100 at Walmart The Polar H10 is ideal for outdoor activities. You'll need to download the Polar Beat app to get the most out of it. The app is available for both iOS and Android and uses Bluetooth and ANT Plus connectivity to pair with different devices. The Polar H10 can connect to two Bluetooth devices at once, so you can connect it to both your smartwatch and a compatible piece of fitness equipment, like some treadmills or exercise bikes. The heart-rate monitor is easy to clip on and adjust and comes in a variety of sizes to fit most users. Once you're in the app, it's easy to go into settings and connect to the heart-rate monitor as long as your phone's Bluetooth is on. In the app, you'll see you can select from 19 different activities to measure your heart rate, including some that don't use GPS, like strength training and treadmill running, tennis, badminton, indoor cycling or other indoor activities. This heart-rate monitor can also be used for swimming, as it's waterproof.I tested this heart-rate monitor during my Future app strength training sessions and during a couple of walks. Since Future automatically connects to my Apple Watch too, I was able to compare my Apple readings against Polar's. I found that I didn't get much information recorded during strength training on the Polar app with the exception of how long the workout was. But when I dove into the Apple Fitness app I was able to see that the Polar H10 captured my average heart rate and it matched with the data my Apple Watch collected. However, for my walks both indoors and outdoors, the Polar H10 was able to show me a detailed reading of the distance I walked, my average heart rate, calories burned, max heart rate, pace and fat burn percentage of calories. A line graph chart is also included that shows you a display of your heart rate and time during the activity. If you plan on using it mainly outdoors for activities like running, jogging, hiking, skating, skiing or rowing, you can't go wrong with this heart-rate monitor. In fact, if you already own a Polar watch, you may get even more out of it when paired with this heart-rate monitor.

  • Green Disposal: Recycle Your Old Computers and Printers for Free
    www.cnet.com
Do you have an oldlaptop, desktoporprinterthat's taking up space? There are plenty of easy and sustainable options for disposing of them. Some locations will even give you store credit for recycling your old tech.Disposing of such items can be as simple as bringing them to major retailers such as Best Buy, Office Depot and Staples -- and throwing away your old devices is actually illegal and can draw large fines in some states, including in California. This story is part of 12 Days of Tips, helping you make the most of your tech, home and health during the holiday season. It's a necessary habit to get into, as well. According to a UN report released earlier this year, people around the world are throwing away about five times more gadgets than are being recycled. Here's what you need to know about recycling your old tech. Read more:Why Our Gadgets Aren't Getting Recycled Enough, and How You Can HelpWhat to do before recycling your computer CNETWherever you choose to take or mail in your items to be recycled, you'll want to make sure that you protect your data by removing it as best you can before you do so. One way to do this is to perform a factory reset on your computer. Our guide talks you through the process. Retailers that recycle computers and printers Some retail stores will accept computers and printers for recycling, but it's not always a free service. Policies vary by company. AppleYou can recycle your old Apple computers, monitors and peripherals such as printers for free at an Apple Store, but there's a costly catch. According to the Apple Free Recycling program, in order to receive this service, you must also purchase a qualifying Apple computer or monitor. Need another option? A third-party company called Gazelle buys old MacBooks to recycle them. After accepting Gazelle's offer, you print out a prepaid label or request a prepaid box and ship the machine to them. Read more: Phone and Laptop Repair Is Going Mainstream, With a Big Push From iFixitBest Buy Best Buy generally accepts up to three household items per person per day to be recycled for free, and that includes desktop computers and printers, as well as other items, ranging from e-readers to vacuum cleaners. While three is the limit for most items, there's a higher standard for laptops -- Best Buy will take five of those per household per day. Note that rules for dropping off monitors vary by state, and it's not always free to do so. Best Buy also offers a mail-in recycling service for select items, but that's also not free. A small box that holds up to 6 pounds costs $23, while a large box (up to 15 pounds) costs $30. Office Depot and OfficeMaxOffice Depot and OfficeMax merged in 2013. The retailers offer a tech trade-in program both in-store and online where customers may be able to get a store gift card in exchange for their old computers and printers. If the device has no trade-in value, the company will recycle it for free. Office Depot also sells its own tech recycling boxes that you can fill up with electronics to be recycled and then drop off at the stores, but they aren't free. The small boxes cost $8.39 and hold up to 20 pounds; the medium ones cost $18.29 and hold up to 40 pounds; and the large cost $28 and hold up to 60 pounds. Staples You can bring your old desktop computers, laptops, printers and more to the Staples checkout counter to be recycled for free, even if they weren't purchased there. The retailer also has a new free at-home battery recycling box which, according to a rep, has led to customers recycling thousands of batteries per week, up from an earlier average of 50 batteries per week. Here's a list of everything that can be recycled at Staples. Read more:How to Factory Reset a MacBook, Windows Laptop or ChromebookHow to find tech recycling centers If you don't live near a major retailer or would rather take your computers and printers to a recycling center, you can locate places close to you by using search tools provided by Earth911 and the Consumer Technology Association. Earth911 Use the recycling center search function on Earth911 to find recycling centers near your ZIP code that accept laptops, desktops and printers. Note that the results may also turn up some places that accept mobile phones and not computers or printers, so you may have to do a little filtering. CTA's Greener Gadgets Consult the Consumer Technology Association's Greener Gadgets Recycle Locator to find local recycling centers in your area that will take old items. The search function also allows you to filter the results to separately hunt for places that take computers versus printers.

  • Astro Bot made the best play for nostalgia this year, and I don't care if you think it's a big advert
    www.eurogamer.net
As we're talking about games from 2024 that did something really well, for me, one game stood high above the rest (and is also a game I remember playing this year that actually released this year - sorry, Resident Evil 4 Remake, my brain forgot you released in 2023!). Astro Bot got me right in the feels this year. Other games undoubtedly had more affecting storylines and characters, but as someone who obviously loves video games a great deal, Sony's PS5 nostalgia-fest drilled right into whichever part of my brain processes joy. And let's be honest, that part has been used less and less in recent years.I've owned every PlayStation system since the platform burst onto the scene 30 years ago - I make that seven consoles and two handhelds, plus a few refreshes. Yet, despite that fanboy-level of ownership, I never thought I had much of an emotional connection to Sony's console. Don't get angry, but if I was forced to pick the gaming brands I have the most fondness for, I'd go with Sega and Xbox. I did ask you not to get angry. Sega was everything when I was a young lad and Xbox presented an exciting new future for gaming at about the time I ventured into my career. PlayStation was just the cool console in between, so I thought. I was wrong.Watch on YouTubeI've long believed that my love of retro games isn't about the games themselves, but the way they take you back in time. In the spare room/office I work from at home, the first thing I see when I walk in is a lovely boxed copy of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Mega Drive. I can't say I'm desperate to play it, but every time I glance at it, I'm reminded of the kind of unbounded glee that's pretty much reserved only for children these days. I felt that, once, I remind myself. Late nights trying to defeat Robotnik - me, my brother, and cousin leaving the Mega Drive turned on overnight so we didn't lose our progress. Better times, maybe. Simpler times, for sure.Astro Bot has taken criticism for being a big advert that you have to pay for, a cynical way for Sony to tap into an audience that loves the PlayStation. I have no problem with people thinking that (I, personally, don't understand the popularity of Animal Crossing, if we're sharing bad opinions). I just don't care. Maybe I should be analysing it more deeply and feel deeply ashamed of myself, but I simply don't want to. Image credit: PlayStation Image credit: Eurogamer/Team Asobi/Sony Image credit: Eurogamer/Team Asobi/Sony Image credit: Team AsobiFrom a gameplay perspective, Astro Bot is top notch. Mechanically it's super tight (if not as ripe for god-level mastery as some of the 3D Mario games), the levels are bathed in creativity, and it's a feast for the eyes and ears. It's brilliant. But it's not just a game. It's a portal - like my copy of Sonic the Hedgehog, it's a gateway to another time. A lot was made of the classic character Bots you collect throughout the game, and these are great, entering the hub/interactive museum once found. But there's one moment that got to me more than anything else.I won't spoil it in full, but towards the end of Astro's adventure the game shifts gears and you find yourself in a 3D homage to classic shm'ups, the side-scrolling shooters from the past. During this sequence, a moment is highlighted by the playing of the original PlayStation boot jingle. I honestly don't know what it was about this tune, played at this time, at the end of a glorious jaunt through my own gaming history, but my eyes started to water.Video games mean a lot to me, more than most I'd expect. I've built my entire working life around them, my career dedicated to celebrating the best and highlighting the worst. As a job, it's as tiring and exhausting, sometimes exasperating, as any other, and it's easy to lose sight of why I chose this path all those years ago. Just for a moment, in the darkened early hours, a dim light from the DualSense painting the room in an ethereal glow, I was 12 again, and it was incredible. For that, I love Astro Bot, and I guess I love PlayStation too.

  • After conquering Sonic, the third film's writers would love to have a go at making a Zelda movie based on a once divisive entry in the series
    www.vg247.com
Wind UpAfter conquering Sonic, the third film's writers would love to have a go at making a Zelda movie based on a once divisive entry in the seriesAnd honestly, I hope they get to!Image credit: Nintendo News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Dec. 28, 2024 The team behind Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has proven it knows how to make a video game movie, and now the writers have shared that they'd like to tackle a Zelda movie. It feels like a bit of a surprising thing to say that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (the movie one, not the game one) is actually really quite good, considering the series' lengthy and mixed history. And yet here we are, with a film that managed to pretty successfully adapt the wacky storyline from Sonic Adventure 2, even if the odds were against it. Personally that leaves me feeling confident that the team behind it could treat some other film adaptations of games pretty well, and speaking to IGN, the film's writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller have shared some games they'd be interested in adapting, which does actually include another Sega title. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "We've talked about Golden Axe," Casey said. "Golden Axe was another good Genesis multiplayer game." Miller went on to suggest A Boy and His Blob, with Casey adding a slightly odder one to the pile, "the 7-Up game about the dot having a platforming adventure," or to be precise, Cool Spot, a 1993 platformer all about the red dot from the 7-Up Logo. Though it's the pair's most serious suggestion that will likely perk your ears up more than Golden Axe and Cool Spot."I think another easy one I think we can answer because the movie's already happening and we're already not doing it would be a Zelda," Miller shared. "I remember always when we played Wind Waker, we were always like, man, I mean, it would probably be weird if they made a Zelda movie to start with Wind Waker versus the more classic Hyrule. But we both loved Wind Waker and it's so cinematic. Yeah. So after they make this Zelda movie, I guess we're putting it out there in the world, maybe we can do a Wind Waker spin-off."It's an interesting choice especially considering that, once upon a time, Wind Waker was a more divisive title, with some Zelda fans being repulsed by it due to its cel shaded look. The game is partially beloved for its looks these days, but back in the day there was a large number of Zelda lovers that didn't like the change from the more serious looking Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.Still, Wind Waker would certainly make for a fun adaptation, and while Nintendo is making a live-action adaptation, I find it unlikely that it'll be about Wind Waker anyway (let's just cross our fingers it isn't Wand of Gamelon, somehow).

  • I streamed with Logitech's Mevo Core camera, and it nearly beat out my $3,600 Canon
    www.zdnet.com
ZDNET's key takeaways Logitech's Mevo Core has a micro 4/3 image sensor that outperforms typical webcams in low light and resolution. Wireless connectivity offers flexible placement and setup for your live streams. The Mevo Core is fairly pricey at $999, with no lens included, but features like multi-cam support for creative live streams utilizing camera switching make it worth the money. more buying choices Logitech has been a premier leader in thewebcam marketfor years. This is in large part because the company continues to strategically redefine what a great webcam should be and how it should present you as the on-camera star. Also: This pocket camera has fully replaced my iPhone for video shooting - and it's a must for travelingWhether improving image sensor tech and optics or smart acquisitions, the company has made my job reviewing the latest cameras and photo gear a little more exciting than it already is. Case in point: Logitech's 2024 launch of the Mevo Core 4K Wireless streaming camerais one of the most interesting gadgets I've tested in a while. details View at Amazon The tech specsGetting the tech specs out of the way, there are only a few things that truly matter when it comes to webcams: the image sensor, frame rate, and resolution. The Mevo Core can record video at 4K resolution, while streaming video tops out at 1080p. Both resolutions offer a frame rate of 30 frames per second (fps), which is pretty standard for capturing or streaming content to platforms like Twitch and YouTube. Also:The best vlogging cameras of 2024The kicker about this camera is the image sensor. This isn't your tiny smartphone or webcam image sensor. The Mevo Core utilizes a Micro 4/3 image sensor (MFT), which is roughly three times the size of typical webcams and smartphone sensors, leading to better low-light performance. But, there's more regarding the image sensor and camera. If you have a MFT lens, you can use it with the Mevo Core. Any MFT lens is compatible with the Mevo Core, but Logitech states it has a few "certified" MFT lenses from Panasonic Lumix, Olympus, and Sigma. More on that momentarily. How does it look and feel?DuringOffice Hours with my creator community, I showed off the build quality of the Mevo Core. I was pleasantly surprised when I unboxed this camera. The Mevo Core is a solid 1.5lbs (700g) with a 23Wh lithium-ion battery in a boxy form factor of 3.5in x 3.5in x 3.25in (90mm x 90mm x 82.4mm). The material is plastic, but not "cheap." When holding the Mevo Core in your hands, you can really feel the quality of it. Logitech Mevo Core streaming camera on a tripod mount Ant Pruitt/ZDNETWhat are the features? The fascinating, boxy build of the Mevo Core is one of the reasons creators will be interested in this camera. Along each side, you'll find a -20 mount (four total), which is perfect for tripod mounting plates, monitors, external microphones, and any other tools a creator will use to capture video. Yes, the Mevo Core has an internal microphone, but an internal mic on a camera should be your last resort when recording audio. Also: DJI's latest wireless microphones solve one of my biggest problems with audio recordingThe Mevo Core has an HDMI port and two USB-C ports, but it is also capable of Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth. This capability is handy as it allows you to manage the camera with the Mevo Multicam mobile app on your iOS or Android device. The app makes changing camera zoom, focus, and exposure settings quick and easy. It also touts having an AI Auto-Director to allow streamers and content creators with multiple Mevo Core cameras to switch views and camera angles for more compelling video for their audience.Regarding the previous mention of MFT lenses to be used with the Mevo Core, here's the list of "certified" MFT lenses as mentioned by Logitech.ManufacturerPrime/ZoomOlympus 14-42mm EZPowered ZoomLumix 14-42mm PZPowered ZoomLumix 45-175mm PZPowered ZoomSigma 16mmPrimePerformanceThe image quality on the Mevo Core is outstanding. This is not your average webcam. With the Micro 4/3 image sensor, you can expect better performance in low light, but the performance in great (controlled) lighting, such as in my home studio, will really blow you away. In my simple comparison, I was pleasantly surprised by the image quality as I attached the Lumix 45-175mm f/4 zoom lens to the Mevo Core next to my Canon R5 C and its 24-105mm f/4 L lens. The Mevo Core (left) next to the Canon R5 C (right). Ant Pruitt/ZDNETGranted, this test can't be considered "fair," but it's a good way to see how the Micro 4/3 sensor and quality glass (lens) will stack up against a full-frame sensor on a powerhouse of a camera. See for yourself below. The image isn't bad at all. I will note that in my existing lighting, I noticed that at ISO 1600 the Mevo Core image noise was more apparent. The R5 C is set to ISO 1600 with next to no noise. Therefore, I set the Mevo Core to ISO 800 and increased the exposure to better match the exposure brightness of the Canon. Ant Pruitt/ZDNETZDNET's buying adviceThe Logitech Mevo Core is available now for $999, and believe me when I say it brings a heck of a lot of value based on my testing. Who should buy the Mevo Core? The seasoned creator with an established history and workflow should buy this device if they're looking to upgrade their existing set. Due to pricing, it's harder for me to recommend the Mevo Core to newer creators and streamers, especially if you're on a budget. Also: This Android camera app alternative is better than what you're usingI'm excited to try the camera out more, but there's one thing I know for sure: creators will not stand for inconveniences or workarounds when it comes to changing cameras in their setup. Let's see if further integration of the Mevo Core into my studio set will be as seamless as I hope.Featured reviews

Let's recap how we got hereThe TikTok ban is officially called the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act and was signed into law by President Biden on April 24, 2024.ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, now has a deadline to sell the app to a US-approved buyer or face a ban. Here is the recap:Deadline: ByteDance must sell TikTok by January 24, 2025 (or April 24, 2025, with an extension).Consequence: If not sold, TikTok will be removed from US app stores and banned.Reason: The law addresses national security concerns over data access and potential influence from the Chinese government.TikTok saw the new act and said nah and pushed back against it, arguing it violates the First Amendment. The irony of a Chinese company arguing for the First Amendment is not lost on me. On December 6, 2024, the US Court of Appeals upheld the ban. Also:Is this the end of Google? TikTok ban could leave a void Meta won't fillTikTok has become a critical platform for many creators, with some earning over 75% of their income through the app. Meta doesn't offer the same programs and support geared toward audience growth and creator revenue, so creators on Meta typically earn less money. For advertisers, the TikTok ban is less than ideal; in fact, it sucks. Also:ChatGPT Search could destroy online businesses - how you can stay aheadTo understand why, here's a crash course in marketing. Don't worry, I'll keep it as simple as possible. There are two main stages of awareness:Intent: When people know what they want and are actively searching for it. This is called product or problem awareness. I know what my problem is, and I'm looking for a solution. Sometimes, this could be problem and solution-aware. Think of when you use Google Shopping. With a bit of education, you decide to buy. That's discovery.Discovery is key to scaling revenue because it introduces your product or service to people who don't yet know they need it. Meta is king when it comes to discovery, but TikTok is gaining ground quickly.Stay with me; you need to understand this to see the void TikTok provides another platform to showcase products to a new audience at scale. The biggest winnersThe obvious winners are platforms like Google, Meta, Snapchat, and X. Google is sighing relief as 74% of Gen Z users use TikTok for search, with 51% preferring TikTok over Google as their search engine.Yeah, you read that right; on top of being a social platform, TikTok is also becoming a search engine.Amazon also stands to benefit.TikTok Shop has been growing rapidly, and its ability to serve as both a traffic source and a storefront makes it incredibly powerful. Also: Drowning in spam? Stop giving out your email address - do this insteadOverall, I believe this ban will be a net positive for the American people.I know what you are thinking: "You just said this will cost small businesses billions, plus lead to lost jobs and more." And I feel strongly about that. However, no foreign adversary should have this much access to American lives. This data includes spending habits, credit card information, shopping preferences, location data, browsing history, biometric data, and even access to camera rolls and microphones. Looking at this objectively, we should have never gotten to this point. But that is a rant for another day.The biggest loser no one is talking about...ByteDance, creators, and small businesses would bear the brunt of a TikTok ban as court filings from TikTok executives estimate creators and small businesses could lose $1.3 billion in revenue during the first month. But guess who's probably low-key pissed about this?Shopify! Also: This pocket camera has fully replaced my iPhone for video shootingShopify's partnership with TikTok allows merchants to connect their Shopify stores directly to TikTok Shop. It allows business owners to sync their stores, manage ads, access analytics, and use TikTok's shopping features. This seamless integration drives growth for both platforms. TikTok's e-commerce goals are ambitious, with a target of $17.5 billion in US sales for 2024. Shopify stands to gain big from that. The partnership gives merchants access to TikTok's massive audience and a new way to drive sales.TikTok and Shopify are like peanut butter and jelly. One brings the traffic, and the other handles the transactions. All I am saying is that Shopify is about to take a hit, and no one is talking about it. What next?If you are a creator or small business owner wondering what to do next, I got you.The obvious answer is to double down on platforms like YouTube, Meta, X, and others. It's decent advice, but more is needed to solve the real problem. The real issue is that we need to own our audience as marketers, business owners, and creators. Whether through email lists, membership sites, or SMS, the goal should be to own the relationship, not rent it.Here's the hard truth: if it's not this, it will be something else. The next update, the next algorithm change, the next platform shutdown, something will always disrupt the way you reach your audience.I've been doing this for a long time, and I can't recall a moment when advertising costs went down. Owning your audience is more than just prudent. It's an opportunity to stabilize costs. The pattern is clear for 2025: businesses must be media-first to survive and thrive. What does that mean?Think about building a community. Think about providing value to your prospects before making an offer. It's about creating content that builds trust, loyalty, and engagement so your audience stays with you, no matter what happens on any platform. If you want deeper insights on how to make this work, hit me up on LinkedIn.My two centsAs someone who this ban will impact, I have a mixed bag of emotions. As a TikTok Shop operator and advertiser, I wanna cry.As a Meta advertiser, I'm not happy and will be closely watching ad costs as this plays out.As a Meta investor, I find it interesting that it could boost the share price. As a Shopify investor, I'm closely monitoring Q2 2025 earnings if the ban is upheld. As an American, I like my privacy private, so I get it.That said, in situations like this, I always remember this quote"It's not happening to you. It's happening for you." As cheesy as it sounds, that saying has served me well during tough times. Hope this helps; I'm rooting for you.P.S. Want more data-driven marketing insights? • Are You Safe? 15 Ways To Prevent A Hacker Attack Today
    www.forbes.com
Abstract Technology Binary Code Dark Red Background. Cyber Attack, Ransomware, Malware, Scareware ... [+] ConceptgettyWhat would you do if you discovered your email or bank account had been hacked today, right this minute? It is a terrifying thought but one that is becoming increasingly common.Home users are prime targets because they often lack the robust security measures found in businesses. Hackers exploit the fact that individuals are more likely to use weak passwords, reuse them across multiple accounts, and fall for phishing scams. Additionally, home networks are typically less secure, making them an easier entry point for attackers.Typical hacker attacks often begin with deceptive instant messages or emails designed to steal your login credentials or install malicious software. However, these attacks often unfold in ways you least expect. For example, even if you avoid clicking on suspicious links, images embedded in emails can also carry malicious code. Attackers may use urgent language to manipulate you into calling a fake phone number they control, or they might call you directly, impersonating officials from trusted organizations.Even non-clickable website URLs can be dangerous. Hackers may use encoded or subtly altered web addresses that, when copied and pasted, redirect you to a phishing site.Unexpected scenarios include:QR Code Scams: Tampered QR codes can lead to malicious sites or unauthorized payments.Bluetooth Exploits: Public Bluetooth use risks data theft.Wi-Fi Eavesdropping: Unsecured Wi-Fi exposes your data to hackers.Supply Chain Attacks: Compromised software updates may install malware.Deepfake Attacks: Fake videos or audio trick victims into sharing sensitive data or money. The good news? You can prepare. In this guide, I will break down the steps you can take to secure your digital life and stay one step ahead of the hackers.Strengthen Your DefensesMORE FOR YOUIt may seem obvious, but it is essential to emphasize because it is often overlooked: practice safe online behavior! Avoid phishing scams, suspicious links, unsafe websites, and unknown email attachments. Be cautious not only with unsolicited communication but also with messages from friends or relatives; they may sometimes get hacked and unknowingly send you malicious links. Now, lets move on to specific tips.Yes, it is a hassle, but reset all passwords for all online accounts right now. Change your passwords every few months, ensuring they are strong and unique.Always use different passwords for each account to limit exposure in case of a breach.Check for inactive Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on all accounts and activate it wherever possible.Use different email accounts for different purposes. For example, one email can be used for important accounts like banking and another for less critical accounts, such as entertainment or subscriptions.Search for exposed personal information. Google yourself, check data breach sites like Spokeo, Whitepages, MyLife, and Have I Been Pwned, use tools like Nortons Dark Web Monitoring or Experians services to spot your data on the dark web, and review online discussions or forums for exposed details such as your email or location.Regularly review your credit reports for signs of fraud or unauthorized activity.Regularly check for outdated apps and operating systems on all devices and install updates promptly. Configure devices and software to update automaticallyOn supported devices, use Lockdown Mode to restrict functionality during potential threats.Close inactive online accounts and uninstall apps you no longer use.Limit apps to only the permissions they truly need, especially for sensitive data like location.Use trusted antivirus solutions to protect your devices from malware.Review and adjust privacy and security settings across all accounts. Set up alerts for account logins and transactions. On social networks, control who can see your posts, profile details, and tagged content. Avoid oversharing on social platforms.Use filters to reduce phishing attempts and spam. In Gmail, go to Settings > Filters and Blocked Addresses > Create a New Filter, then specify criteria like keywords, sender addresses, or attachments, and choose actions like automatically deleting or sending them to spam.Secure your home network by using a strong, unique Wi-Fi password, enabling WPA3 encryption, and turning off remote management.Use external drives or cloud services to back up important files. Automate backups where possible.Final ThoughtsYes, security may not always be convenient, but it is a small price to pay compared to the devastating consequences of losing your identity, money, or something even more valuable.

  • XEC Variant May Be Driving Silent COVID-19 Surge In December 2024
    www.forbes.com
Holiday travel and the associated crowds like the one seen here at the Tom Bradley International ... [+] Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on December 26, 2024, will help the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) travel and spread too. (Photo by Mario Tama/Getty Images)Getty ImagesLooks like yet another end-of-the-year COVID-19 surge is happening. But this year it seems to be getting a whole lot less attention than such COVID surges in previous years. Thats helped earn this latest upswing the following nickname: the silent COVID-19 surge. But this doesnt mean that you should simply stay in an enjoy the silence mode and be lulled into a false sense of security. Failing to take appropriate precautions could leave you open to getting COVID, both the long and the short of it.XEC Variant Has Become Dominant In COVID-19 SurgeIt shouldnt be too surprising that the colder and drier weather is bringing a surge this time of the year as it has had each year since 2020. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 just keeps doing what it does oh-so-well: it just keeps mutating and mutating and mutating, resulting in more and more variants. Leading the charge now silentlybecause viruses dont talkis the XEC variant of the SARS-CoV-2. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that the XEC variant has comprised 45% of SARS-CoV-2 infections from December 8 through December 21. In second place was the KP.3.1.1 at 24% followed by the LP.8.1 at 8%. None of the rest of the alphabet soup of FLiRT family descendants constituted more than 5% of the bunch.Wastewater Surveillance Data Suggests COVID-19 SurgeThe number one indication that a COVID surge is happening right now is from a number two thing: wastewater surveillance, which is basically testing samples of poop-filled sewage water for the virus. A CDC map of the U.S. shows that in the December 8-14 time period, wastewater viral activity of SARS-CoV-2 activity in wastewater samples was measured to be either high or very high in 21 states. Thats after many states remained at moderate-to-low levels throughout much of the Fall. While wastewater surveillance is far from a complete waste, the accuracy of wastewater surveillance does depend on where and how often samples are taken. Just because measured SARS-CoV-2 activity is low doesnt necessarily mean that virus isnt spreading substantially among the human population. There can be a substantial delay between people getting infected and the virus being detected in wastewater. Additionally, its never a good idea to rely on a single measure for anything. Thats kind of why dating profiles have more than just height listed on them.Lack Of Comprehensive And Proactive Surveillance Data System Makes It Difficult To Detect COVID-19 SurgeThese days its actually a whole lot harder to figure out when and where theres a COVID surge. If you go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID Data Tracker, the first things that youll find are four measures. The first is the test positivity rate listed as 5.6% for the week ending December 14, 2024, which is higher than the 5.1% from the previous week. This no longer has the accuracy that it may have had back in 2020 when a lot more testing was going on and being reported. Also, youll notice that its been two weeks since that week so that value isnt exactly up to date.MORE FOR YOUThe other three measures listed are:The percentage of all emergency room visits that received a COVID-19 diagnosis: This was 0.7% for the week ending December 14, which was the same as the week prior. These numbers may not be very accurate because its not clear how many people visiting the ER are getting tested for COVID these days. Moreover, ER data has always been an after-the-surge-has-already-been-occurring-for-a-while measure. People wont go to the ER until after they develop severe enough symptoms, which can be one to two weeks after they got infected. The number of hospitalizations per 100,000 people in the population: This was 1.6 for the week ending November 30 and down from 1.7 the week prior. But the week ending November 30 is even more out-of-date than the week ending December 14. Hospitalization data have the same aforementioned weaknesses that ER data do.The percentage of all deaths that were due to COVID: This was 1.1% for the week ending December 14 up from 0.8% the week prior. This is also an after-the-surge-has-already-been-occurring-for-a-while measureAdditionally, these three measure are sort of like overly large shoulder pads, skinny jeans and oversized logo clothinga bit out of date as the primary measures. The nature of COVID has changed since the earlier pandemic days. As more and more people have gotten more and more exposure to the spike protein through vaccination and infection, peoples immune systems are less virginal to the virus and instead know how to better handle SARS-CoV-2. This probably has helped more severe acute COVID-19 outcomes less and less likely. That doesnt mean that the SARS-CoV-2 is no longer a significant threat. A SARS-CoV-2 infection continues to bring the risk of long Covid. The exact risk is not known because long Covid hasnt been aggressively followed. In fact, the number of current long Covid cases is not really since the U.S. never really developed an effective surveillance system for long Covid.Youve also probably heard the term silent but deadly. Just because the risk of death from COVID-19 is now lower than it was in the early years of the pandemic doesnt mean that it cant happen. This is especially true if your immune system is weaker. How To Protect Yourself During This Silent COVID-19 SurgeOf course, not talking about COVID-19 doesnt mean that it has gone away. The trouble, though, is many people are acting as if COVID has gone the way of the sweater vest and not taking enough precautions, you know all those things the pandemic was supposed to teach us. These include:Washing your hands frequently and thoroughly: Remember to lather up with soap for at least 20 seconds, which is the amount of time it takes to since from the start to the end of the first chorus in the song I Touch Myself, as Ive written previously for Forbes. This remains important not just against SARS-CoV-2 but also against the multitude of other pathogens out there, including the flu.Staying home when youre sick: You are not that important for work or that party, certainly not important to get everyone else sick.Practicing appropriate social distancing: If that coughing stranger wants to sidle up to you to talk about psychedelics, crypto or whatever, keep your distance.Keeping indoor spaces well-ventilated with air purification: This can include using a HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arresting) filter to remove harmful particles from the air.Wear a face mask when and where the risk is higher such as crowded public indoor locations: Sure, some political and business leaders have managed to politicize the heck out of face masks. But N95 masks are designed to block virus particles, and scientific studies have supported the effectiveness in reducing the risk of transmission.Getting the updated COVID-19 vaccine: The protection offered by vaccination tends to begin waning at the four to six month mark. Plus the vaccine from previous years targeted much earlier version of the virus.Again, the 2024 edition of the end-of-year COVID-19 surge may not be getting attention from political leaders. But as history has shown, just because political leaders dont talk about something doesnt mean that it isnt a problem.
