Red Brick Studio was approached to build a weekend home for a couple (and their dog!) with a brief that suggested the weekend house to be simple yet sophisticated, non-indulgent, and something that prioritizes function over form. As a response to this came about the Oblique House. A house that attempts to be honest, bare, and minimal to the point of being almost frugal; created to serve its primary function - of creating an intimate space considering the complexity of the terrain and beautiful views of the Uksan Lake.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! With the recent increase in second-home tourism, the studio wished to create a positive environmental impact by minimizing ground impact and maximizing site potential while lowering the energy value of the built mass using contextually appropriate technologies & materials. The site had an interesting topography, starting with a flat patch upfront which starts steadily sloping down eventually reaching the edge of the lake. Going against the conventional practice, the studio proposed to reserve the flat part for the orchard the client wished for, set the house on the sloping part of the site, and use the natural topography to tuck away the majority of the house from the view at the entrance.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The planning of the house is akin to a simple cruciform plan, where the central arm along the slope is embedded in the ground and the other is stilted and sits lightly on the ground. The central mass; built out of poured stone rubble walls; emerges from the ground taking one gently down the landscaped basalt steps to the red entrance door. It also has a slight tilt in plan, which not only opens up the views of the living room towards the lake but also aligns the bedroom towards the setting sun. The rest of the house is stilted on steel columns, allowing the sloping land underneath to remain undisturbed. Walls of exposed fly ash masonry envelop this block with openings that are strategically placed to capture the picturesque hillsides around the lake.Save this picture! As opposed to the rather hard and bare exterior, the interiors of the house are a welcome contrast. The insides are rendered with natural lime plaster to keep the interiors cooler during the hot summers and the breathable capacity of the plaster makes sure moisture doesn't remain in the walls. A skylight at the center of the house bathes the stairwell with natural sunlight. Custom-designed metal french doors, manufactured by the studio themselves, open completely to connect the spaces to the outdoors. The white walls and the black floor provide a neutral backdrop for the pops of color that appear in the furniture and the artwork all of which was done by the client herself!Save this picture! The landscape has mindfully been kept very raw, choosing hardy native trees and wild grass as compared to more manicured options. The studio hopes that with time the vegetation takes over the bare built mass, architecture slowly recedes back and lets nature itself receive all the attention.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeRed Brick StudioOfficePublished on December 28, 2024Cite: "Oblique House / Red Brick Studio" 28 Dec 2024. • The best movies leaving Netflix, Prime Video, and Criterion Channel at the end of December 2024
    www.polygon.com
The end of the year is nearly upon us, and while that means all kinds of things, one thing that might get lost is how many streaming services are cleaning out their catalogs for 2025. Of course, there will be plenty of movies added to platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and Criterion Channel next year, but for now, were focusing on the best movies leaving at the end of December. This months selection of movies includes a perfect companion to one of the most surprising games of the year, a perfect companion to this Christmas Bob Dylan biopic, one of the best comedies of the 2010s, and a horror classic. Here are all the best movies leaving streaming in December. Editors pick: Raiders of the Lost ArkDirector: Steven Spielberg Stars: Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, Paul FreemanLeaving Prime Video: Dec. 31The new Indiana Jones game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, is one of the biggest and best surprises of the year as far as gaming is concerned. So if youve picked up the game already and are itching for some more Indiana content, theres no better place to turn than where the game opens: Raiders of the Lost Ark.Youve likely already seen this movie at least once, but its always a great time to rewatch what is one of the best action-adventure movies ever released. Raiders of the Lost Ark is masterwork of character development, humor, suspense, and cinematic blocking, and a good reminder that when Harrison Ford wants to be, there isnt a more charming star in the history of Hollywood.Movies leaving Netflix Easy ADirector: Will GluckStars: Emma Stone, Stanley Tucci, Lisa KudrowLeaving Netflix: Dec. 31After the last few years of wonderful weirdness from Emma Stone, its easy to forget that for a brief period in her career she was effortlessly one of the funniest actors in Hollywood. Chief among her comedy achievements is Easy A, a clever high school comedy that felt equally 80s humor and modern refresh. The movie follows Olive Penderghast (Stone), who concocts a desperate lie to get out of a camping trip that snowballs into the whole school labeling her a tramp thanks to some gossiping by her devoutly religious classmate. But rather than dissuade her classmates, Olive leans into the reputation and turns the whole school on its head in the process.Movies leaving Prime Video The Wicker Man Director: Robin Hardy Stars: Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Diane Cilento Leaving Prime Video: Dec. 31The Wicker Man follows a police officer whos tasked with heading to a remote island to conduct an investigation about a girl whos been reported missing. What he finds instead is a society that follows an old pagan religion, with views he cant make heads or tails of. But as their behavior gets stranger, he starts to wonder how much danger he might be in.Oddly perfect for the holidays in a twisted sort of way, The Wicker Man is a horror classic whose influence is still thriving today. Leaving Criterion Channel Inside Llewyn Davis Director: Joel and Ethan Coen Stars: Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Adam DriverLeaving Criterion Channel: Dec. 31The slightly more official Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, may have just come out in theaters, but the best evocation of New Yorks folk scene in the 1960s remains the Coen brothers excellent Inside Llewyn Davis. The movie follows Llewyn Davis, a struggling folk musician in the 1960s whos tragically talented but exactly on the wrong side of the line to make it big. The film follows Llewyns eternal quest to get his foot in the door of the industry without sacrificing the artistic integrity that he thinks lies in the soul of folk music, no matter what anyone around him says. This melancholy masterpiece about chasing art and passion no matter where it takes you is one of the brothers best films ever, and features an absolutely incredible central performance by Oscar Isaac thats some of the finest acting work of the 2010s. So if you need a little extra dose of folk music before or after seeing Timothe Chalamets version of Dylan, this is the perfect place to stop.

  • Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket completes final test for its first flight
    www.engadget.com
Blue Origin's New Glenn heavy-lift launch vehicle is now ready for its first flight. The company has conducted and successfully completed a wet dress rehearsal or a full run-through of the rocket's launch countdown. As The New York Times reports, Blue Origin had to attempt the countdown several times over a few hours, but the company managed to ignite and fire New Glenn's seven engines for 24 seconds in the end.New Glenn's tanks were filled with fuel and the rocket was fitted with a 45,000-pound payload mass simulator as if it truly was heading to space. Blue Origin says this is the first time it operated the vehicle as an integrated system, with New Glenn SVP Jarrett Jones calling the test's completion a "monumental milestone." The Federal Aviation Administration has also granted the company a launch license for New Glenn, which means it's now truly ready to go.The company describes New Glenn as a "giant, reusable rocket built for bigger things." It also said that it was "engineered with the safety and redundancy required to fly humans," though its inaugural flight will be uncrewed. Its first flight was supposed to take place in October carrying two NASA satellites heading to Mars, but it had to be scrapped because the rocket wasn't ready by then. New Glenn will now fly for the first time with the company's Blue Ring Pathfinder, part of its Blue Ring platform that will offer spacecraft services to clients like the Pentagon, instead. While Blue Origin didn't announce a new launch date for the rocket, it's expected to be the company's first flight for 2025 and could take place as early as January 6.Next stop launch pic.twitter.com/GQFz4XxEt5 Jeff Bezos (@JeffBezos) December 28, 2024 This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/science/space/blue-origins-new-glenn-rocket-completes-final-test-for-its-first-flight-140049935.html?src=rss

  • Mindy Kaling shares the secrets to her creativity
    www.fastcompany.com
Mindy Kaling might be the busiest writer/actress in Hollywood these days, but she still considers herself a lazy person. The key to her creativity, she says, lies in structureand a little movement.Kaling created and starred in The Mindy Project and was a writer/actor on The Office, along with many other projects, which range from the animated series Velma to comedies The Sex Lives of College Girls and Never Have I Ever. Even when you exclude The Office, which aired from 2005-2013, thats a lot of work in a fairly short period. But Kaling, who recently launched a new MasterClass with a series of lessons on becoming a screenwriter, says pressure-rich environments are where she thrives.I am an inherently lazy person that needs structure, she says. I need deadlines. Thats where my creativity percolates. There is no coincidence or accident that I became successful on a show where we had to produce 22 to 24 episodes a year . . . and I had exactly four days to write the episode. I look at someone like Michael Lewis, a novelist I love, and think How do you do it? For me, putting a lot of structure around my creativity is where I can succeed. Some might wonder how Kaling, who has written 64 episodes of two different shows since 2020, along with Murray Hill, an upcoming project on Hulu and the screenplay for Legally Blonde 3, does it. Shes answering those questions these days on MasterClass, where shes telling her story of becoming a screenwriter and sharing her keys to success in an extremely competitive business. One thing Kaling has found that has helped her keep up with the pace she has set for herself? Long walks, where she will either talk things through with friendsor, if theyre not available, to herself.Writing is communication, just as talking is, she says. I am a talker. What I will do is talk through a story or a structure. It is so much less daunting to go for a walk and record myself talking, then come back and listen to it and see if theres anything in there. . . . What it affords me is Im never looking at the blank page.It also takes away the fear of writers block. In reviewing her recordings, shes more of an editora role she says she much prefers.Another trick to keeping creative juices flowing, she says? Consider mediums beyond the computer to record your thoughts. Just as those walk-and-talks help her figure out characters or write more conversationally, making notes on colored notecards not only helps Kaling keep her thoughts organized, but it also delivers the dopamine rush one gets from achieving a goal, even a minor one.I am not someone who has ever been visually oriented, but I do love crafts, she says. When I write something down on a brightly colored card, it makes me feel like I did something. Thats one thing about using laptops and doing everything on a computer. You dont get the same visual satisfaction that you completed an errand or a task. Finally, says Kaling, a good way to enhance your creativity is by setting mental exercises for yourself that push you to think about whatever youre creating from a different point of view. As a writer on The Office, for instance, the team would think about how characters would react in certain situations to get a better sense of who that character was.Dwight Schrute, she offers as an example, is the kind of person who, if there is an apocalypse, chooses to drink his own urine on the second day. He doesnt have to. He just does. And you know instantly what kind of guy that is.
