Developer Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone's country life-RPG Stardew Valley has sold over 41 million copies, according to its website. That milestone covers its release on PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and mobile.The website's press page specifically highlights its PC and Switch sales: over 26 million units are from the former, and 7.9 million units from the latter. It's unclear how well Stardew has sold on other systems.In February, Barone revealed his game had sold over 30 million copies, and said it was "thriving more than ever." At the time, Stardew Valley had turned eight years old and was about to receive its 1.6 update weeks later in March. When the update launched, the game hit an all-time peak of 236,614 concurrent players, according to SteamDB.Since its 2016 launch, Stardew's sales have continuously grown alongside its expansion to other platforms. While it's currently unavailable for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, it can be played on those systems via backwards compatibility.Alongside Stardew Valley, Barone is also developing Haunted Chocolatier, another simulation game based around running a candy store.

Sepsis is a critical medical condition resulting from an abnormal immune response to infection, often causing organ dysfunction and high morbidity and mortality rates. Prompt treatment, especially with antibiotics, can significantly improve outcomes. However, the varied clinical presentation of sepsis makes early detection challenging, contributing to higher mortality rates. This underscores the urgent need for reliable risk assessment tools to help clinicians identify high-risk patients quickly and accurately. While numerous tools, such as clinical methods, laboratory tests, and biomarkers, have been proposed, none have been universally adopted. Notably, no AI-based models for sepsis detection have received FDA approval for commercial use.Researchers from NEJM AI, a division of the Massachusetts Medical Society, developed and validated the Sepsis ImmunoScore, the first FDA-authorized AI-based tool for identifying patients at risk of sepsis. Designed for integration with electronic medical records (EMRs), this machine learning-driven tool predicts the likelihood of sepsis onset or progression within 24 hours of patient evaluation. In April 2024, it received FDA marketing authorization through the de novo pathway. The study aimed to assess the Sepsis ImmunoScores performance in detecting sepsis (based on Sepsis-3 criteria) and its secondary outcomes, including in-hospital mortality, ICU admission, hospital stay length, mechanical ventilation, and vasopressor use.The study conducted a prospective, multicenter observational study to develop and evaluate an ML algorithm, the Sepsis ImmunoScore, designed to identify sepsis within 24 hours and assess critical illness outcomes such as mortality and ICU admission. The study enrolled adult patients hospitalized at five U.S. hospitals between April 2017 and July 2022. Participants included those with suspected infections and lithium-heparin plasma samples collected within six hours of blood culture orders. The study population was divided into three cohorts: derivation (n=2366), internal validation (n=393), and external validation (n=698). The primary outcome was sepsis diagnosis within 24 hours using Sepsis-3 criteria, while secondary outcomes included metrics like in-hospital mortality, length of stay, ICU transfer, mechanical ventilation, and vasopressor use.The Sepsis ImmunoScore, developed using a calibrated random forest model, utilized 22 patient-specific features, including vital signs and lab results, to predict sepsis risk. Missing data for specific parameters were handled through imputation. The algorithm was tested for accuracy using AUROC, likelihood ratios, and predictive values across risk categories, with confidence intervals reported. Sensitivity analyses distinguished between initial sepsis diagnosis and cases developing within 24 hours.The study evaluated 3,457 patient encounters with valid Sepsis ImmunoScore results distributed across derivation (2,366 encounters), internal validation (393), and external validation cohorts (698). The participants reflected demographic and clinical characteristics typical of sepsis patients in the U.S. Sepsis rates varied by cohort: 32% in derivation, 28% in internal validation, and 22% in external validation. Patients diagnosed with sepsis had higher rates of severe illness and mortality compared to those without. The Sepsis ImmunoScore algorithm utilized 22 input parameters, including demographic data, vital signs, metabolic panel results, complete blood count, and sepsis biomarkers, such as PCT and CRP, to generate a stratified risk score. SHAP analysis highlighted PCT, respiratory rate, and systolic blood pressure as the most influential factors, with the derivation set achieving an AUC of 0.85, demonstrating robust diagnostic accuracy.The algorithms risk categories effectively predicted sepsis and its secondary outcomes, such as in-hospital mortality, ICU admissions, mechanical ventilation, and vasopressor use within 24 hours. Risk stratification showed a stepwise increase in outcome severity across categories, validated by external datasets. Diagnostic and prognostic analyses indicated strong performance, with an AUC of 0.84 for diagnosing sepsis at presentation and 0.76 for predicting its development within 24 hours. These results underscore the Sepsis ImmunoScores ability to integrate multidimensional data for comprehensive sepsis risk assessment. Compared to existing FDA-approved diagnostic tools, which often focus on single biomarkers like PCT or leukocyte biophysical properties, the Sepsis ImmunoScore offers a broader and more predictive approach.Check out the Paper. This article contains spoilers for Squid Game season 2.Theres a fascinating meta-narrative threaded throughout the second season of Netflixs megahit Squid Game. Its about how little creator Hwang Dong-hyuk actually wants to make a second season of Netflixs megahit Squid Game. Hwang, bless him, has been remarkably candid in discussing how he had no plans to continue the Squid Game narrative following season 1s conclusion. His return to pen seasons 2 and 3 had more to do with his frustration with missing out on the windfall of season 1 cash than it did with creative fulfillment. Despite Hwangs understandably financial mindset, Squid Game season 2 is not only a coherent followup to a global phenomenon but a pretty great one too!There are, however, some telltale witness marks left in the narrative to indicate that the creator is kind of over this whole thing. From returning games to familiar character archetypes to a needless organ harvesting redux Squid Game season 2s dedication to playing the hits can sometimes bleed over into full-blown trolling territory. And none of those elements feels like a bigger inside joke than the seasons big twist: the reveal that Player 001 is yet again a ringer involved in the games. After season 1 revealed that Player 001 in the 33rd Squid Game was none other than game creator Oh Il-nam (O Yeong-su), this season copy/pastes the exact same twist all over again by making the games mysterious masked Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) this editions Player 001. Its preposterous, dumb, and lazy. Its also the best part of the season. In fact, Hwang Dong-hyuk told Netflix that it was the most important part of the season. Making Player 001 an insider again works on multiple levels in Squid Game season 2. The most obvious way is in establishing a level of thematic and narrative resonance with the shows first season. Repetition tends to get a bad rap as its one of the easiest rhetorical devices in a writers toolkit. But no one gets mad at a hammer when theres a nail that needs struck and no one should get mad at Squid Game season 2 for noticing there was a juicy new Player 001 role ripe for the taking. It would have been far less satisfying if Player 001 were merely some nobody. The position is imbued with importance thanks to Oh Il-nams treachery and Squid Game identified the only other existing character on its roster that could provide similar dramatic oomph. The Front Man entering the games also reveals something crucial about our hero Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae). Hes kind of an idiot! As the only survivor of 2021s edition of the games, Gi-hun runs the risk of taking on an almost mythical status within this story. By the time he dyes his hair a garish pink and delivers a measured threat to the Front Man at the conclusion of season 1, Gi-hun resembles a comic book titan more than a capable, working class hero. Season 2 doesnt shy away from depicting Gi-huns heroism and supreme competence in the face of danger but it also humbles him in some important ways. Amid all the stress and chaos, its understandable that Player 456 would overlook the obvious Player 001 gambit again.Of course, the most important part of this Front Man reveal is that it gives us more time with the Front Man himself. In an interview with Netflix, Lee Byung-hun joked that his role in season 1 felt like more of a glorified cameo. That is very much not the case this time around and the show is all the richer for Lees added presence. Lee understands that he is not playing one role but several. The entity we know as The Front Man contains multitudes: he is the omniscient overseer of the games, yes. But hes also the meek Player 132 from 2015s 28th Squid Game, Jun-hos unfortunate brother Hwang In-ho, and most intriguingly: Oh Young-il.Its this last identity that helps take the Front Man from a background boogeyman to the fully-fleshed big bad that Squid Game needs him to be. Nobody knows who the real Hwang In-ho is but his performance as Player 001 Oh Young-il certainly seems like it would be the closest. Like Gi-hun before him, Oh Young-il undergoes the mettle-proving crucible that is the Squid Game, and in the process reveals his true personality. He is as pragmatic as Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) knew his brother to be, as cruel as The Front Man has proven himself to be, and as team-oriented as any Player 001 must be. Its like Oh Young-il is of the games themselves and maybe thats because he is.I hope you noticed that Oh Young-il has the same family name as former Player 001 Oh Il-nam. Because Seong Gi-hun certainly didnt (Again: hes kind of dumb)! The Oh surname sticks out in a country where roughly half the population is known as Kim, Lee, or Park. Its possible that Oh is a false surname that Squid Game pretenders share, but season 2 makes it clear that the truth is likely more dramatic than that. In the seasons second episode, Jun-ho offhandedly mentions that Hwang In-ho was his mothers adopted son, not his brother by birth. Squid Game fans have also noticed that Oh Young-il is lactose intolerantjust like Oh Il-nam said his son was.Combine that with the knowledge that Hwang In-hos father wasnt in his life and it seems possible, if not probable, that Young-il is Il-nams son. Gi-hun even may be related to them as well as he too cannot drink milk. If this all sounds a little Skywalker-y, thats by design. Due to its political themes, Campbell-ian approach to elemental storytelling, and jaw-dropping production design, Squid Game has always felt reminiscent of Star Wars. That its middle chapter concludes on a downer cliffhanger involving a black-masked villain only adds to that sensation. With only its compelling protagonist firmly in place, the show needed to identify an equally-compelling antagonist from its relatively small surviving cast. "Hypocrite."Healthy DisagreementElon's tweet is perhaps his attempt at turning over a new leaf following the H-1B1 debacle on his website, in which the far right nationalists in president-elect Donald Trump's base attacked him for supporting laxer immigration policy that would allow skilled foreign workers to come to the US, especially to ply their trade in the tech industry.What ensued was a days-long meltdown from Musk and to be fair, many of his opponents in the debate that culminated with him swearing vengeance upon his enemies for all time."Take a big step back and FUCK YOURSELF in the face," Musk wrote to an H-1B1 skeptic just days before his call for positivity. Three months after reports surfaced about a cyberattack, called Salt Typhoon, targeting internet service providers and US wiretapping infrastructure, two of the largest telecom companies say they've made progress securing their networks against the threat.AT&T and Verizon each released statements over the weekend addressing Salt Typhoon for the first time since working with federal law enforcement and other entities. AT&T said in its statement that, based on its investigation, China was targeting a "small number of individuals of foreign intelligence interest" and that the company is working to protect customer data.Verizon, meanwhile, said it has "contained the cyber incident brought on by this nation-state threat actor" and that it has "not detected threat actor activity" in its network for some time. It added that a third-party security firm has confirmed the containment.In late September and early October, reports first described the Salt Typhoon attacks, which led the FBI to warn that some types of messaging, such as RCS texting between iOS and Android phones, may be at risk.It now appears that Salt Typhoon has been a more targeted attack than was earlier believed, even though hundreds of millions of customers could have had their data and personal information at risk."In this incident, a small number of high-profile customers in government and politics were specifically targeted by the threat actor," Verizon said in its statement. "Those customers have been notified of the activity."Both Verizon and AT&T noted that they partnered with government and law enforcement agencies, telecommunications industry partners and private cybersecurity firms."In the relatively few instances in which an individual's information was impacted, we have complied with our notification obligations," AT&T said.Over the weekend, a ninth company affected by the hacking was said to be identified, but the White House didn't release the name of the company.T-Mobile reiterated Monday that it was not one of the nine referenced by the government, referencing a blog post from late November.
