WWW.MACWORLD.COMBest AirPods 2025: AirPods, AirPods Pro or Max?MacworldIf youre thinking of buying AirPods any time soon (or hoping to get some as a gift), youve got a few options to choose from. Apple currently has four models in the range, but how do they compare in terms of features? In this article, we take a look at which AirPods are the best for your needs, not to mention your bank balance. We consider the features that make the AirPods Pro better than the AirPods 4, but also consider just how much better the AirPods 4 are than the older third- and second-generation AirPods Apple used to sell. As a result, its the perfect time to buy AirPods, unless you want to wait to see whats the AirPods Pro 3 might include when they launch. What types of AirPods are there?Apple sells various types of AirPods. These range from the standard AirPods right up to the over-the-ear AirPods Max and as the models vary quite a bit in terms of construction and features, the range also encompasses a wide span of pricing. In September 2024 Apple announced two new AirPods 4 (one with and one without Active Noise Cancelation), an update that can turn the AirPods Pro 2 into hearing aids, and an update to the AirPods Max that refreshed the color options and switched the Lightning connector for USB-C. More about those updates below.Read: AirPods 3 vs AirPods 4 to find out whats changed between the two generations and how much better the AirPods 4 are than the AirPods 3.This means that, as of September 2024, Apples AirPods line up is as follows:AirPods 4: $129 at Apple U.S. / 129 at Apple U.K.AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancelation: $179 at Apple U.S. / 179 at Apple U.K.AirPods Pro (2nd Generation, with USB-C): $249 at Apple U.S. / 229 at Apple U.K.AirPods Max: $549 at Apple U.S. / 499 at Apple U.K.AppleThose arent the only earphones that Apple sells. Apple also sells the $19 Apple EarPods / 19 Apple EarPods (either with Lightning connector, USB-C connector, or 3.5mm plug).Plus, Beats is a subsidiary of Apple, so Beats headphones often include Apple-specific features. However, we rarely see these older AirPods at a good enough price now that the AirPods 4 without ANC start at just $129/129.To get the best prices take a look at the best pricing for Apples AirPods right now in the sections below, but we also have a separate roundup of the best AirPods deals that we update monthly.AppleWhat can AirPods do? The AirPods 4, according to Apple, has a design with a natural and secure fit for more people than ever. The effectiveness of the AirPods 4s active noise cancelation is affected by the open design. The AirPods 4 dont absolutely cancel the noise around you, which might be preferable, depending on your situation. If youre in conditions where you need to muffle as much as possible, youll be better off with the AirPods 2s snug ear tips.Like the AirPods Pro 2 case, the $179/179 AirPods 4 with ANC case has a speaker to play alerts through Find My. It also supports USB-C or wireless chargingit works with the Apple Watch charger as well as Qi chargers. If you use active noise cancelation, it shortens the AirPods 4s battery life: when fully charged Apple states a 4-hour listening time with the earbuds and 20 hours of charge with the case. Turn off ANC, and fully charged earbuds can last 5 hours, and the case adds 30 total hours. The AirPods 4 with ANC for $179/179 are a much better value than the 3rd-gen AirPods with numerous pro-level features. They sound great, the active noise cancelation is extremely useful and works surprisingly well, they fit better than previous AirPods, and the wireless charging and Find My speaker on the case are much-welcomed conveniences.Read our full Airpods 4 (mit ANC) review Airpods 4 (ohne ANC)Price When Reviewed:149 EuroBest Prices Today: RetailerPrice149View Deal136,10 View Deal137,49 View Deal139,99 View Deal139,99 View Deal144,00 View Deal144,00 View Deal144,99 View Deal149,00 View Deal152,96 View Deal167,90 View DealPrice comparison from over 24,000 stores worldwideView more pricesProductPricePrice comparison from Backmarket149 at Apple136,10 at tease-Shop137,49 at digitalo.deView more prices from Media Markt Online ShopSaturn Online Shopnotebooksbilligernullprozentshop.deClose Best Prices Today:Airpods 4 (ohne ANC)RetailerPrice149View Deal136,10 View Deal137,49 View Deal139,99 View Deal139,99 View Deal144,00 View Deal144,00 View Deal144,99 View Deal149,00 View Deal152,96 View Deal167,90 View DealPrice comparison from over 24,000 stores worldwideView more pricesProductPricePrice comparison from BackmarketApple offers the AirPods 4 without Active Noice Cancelation for $129/129, a $50/50 lower price than the model with ANC. Apple identifies this product as the AirPods 4. The earbud and case designs are the same as the $179/179 AirPods 4 with ANC. However, the $129 AirPods 4does not havethe following features:Active Noise Cancelation (as well as Adaptive Audio and Transparency mode)Conversation AwarenessWireless charging caseSpeaker on the case for Find My alertsOtherwise, theyre the same. The AirPods 4 have an H2 chip like the ANC model as well as the same audio quality, fit, and features. So youll have to consider if those features listed above are worth the extra $50.The real bonus of the AirPods 4 is the fact that they are being sold for the same price as the 2019 second generation AirPods were prior to September 2024, making them exceptional value for money. Apple AirPods Max (USB-C, 2024)At more than twice the cost of the AirPods Pro, the AirPods Max are the definition of a considered purchase. Thanks to the size of the ear-cups, Apple is able to put a H1 chip in each one, as opposed to the single chip that appears in all of the other AirPods. There are features such as Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency mode and Spacial Audio, but the Max doesnt have the custom high-dynamic range amplifier found in the AirPods (3 and 4) and AirPods Pro, or (more surprisingly) any form of waterproofing. The smart case is also different in that you cant use it to charge the AirPods Max, but this isnt as bad as it sounds, as the onboard batteries provide around 20 hours of listening time.Again, thanks to the size of the AirPods Max, controls are handled not by taps but a Digital Crown similar to that found on the Apple Watch, and a dedicated Noise Control button. There are also multiple microphones to aid with noise cancellation, plus updated sensors for better performance. Since the September 2024 update, the AirPods Max charge with USB-C, but prior to that used the Lightning connector. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack. It is possible to use the Lightening connector to plug in the headphones to an analog audio source, such as an in-flight entertainment system, or if you want to eliminate the latency of Bluetooth by using a wired connection, but the USB-C connectivity doesnt work as seamlessly for this purpose. The September 2024 update also added new color options of blue, purple, Midnight, Starlight or orange. The price didnt change. For a comprehensive look at the AirPods Max, read our full review.AirPods features: How to choose the best AirPodsWell now run through all the differences between the various AirPods, looking at the design, controls, waterproofing, noise canceling, sound quality, compatibility, charging times and battery life to help you decide which AirPods will meet your needs. Design All earbud style AirPods are available in white, just like the iPod earbuds that were so iconic. However, if you are willing to spend more on a pair of over-ear Apple headphones then the AirPods Max come in a variety of two-tone colors including (from September 2024) Blue, Midnight, Orange, Purple, and Starlight. The AirPods Max are designed to create an acoustic seal around your ear to aid noise cancellation. Theres a Digital Crown on one side for volume control.FoundryThere was an expectation that the AirPods Pro would have shorter stems when Apple updated them in 2022, but this wasnt the case. This means that to distinguish between the AirPods 4 and the AirPods Pro (2nd generation) you need to look to the earbud. Only the AirPods Pro come with silicone ear tips to create a seal in your ear. There are four sizes: XS, S, M, L included in the box. The extra small size is new with the AirPods Pro 2. The AirPods Pro are the only other AirPods to offer external noise cancellation.Michael SimonYou might not be keen on pushing something inside your ear, in which case its worth noting that the AirPods Pro 2 offer a vent system for pressure equalization so that it feels comfortable to wear them. This vent system combined with the silicon ear tips means you may find the AirPods Pro 2 more comfortable to wear than the standard AirPods with their hard plastic tips that sit in your ear.The most obvious difference between the new AirPods 4 and the older AirPods 2 and 3 is the size of the stem. Theres a lot else that is visibly different though, as you can see from the image above.FoundrySize is another difference, that may or may not matter to you since it doesnt really impact comfort or fit. The AirPods 4 are lighter than the AirPods Pro 2, which are 5.3g (0.19oz). The AirPods Max weigh a lot more at 384.8g (13.6oz).Controls One of the benefits of using any kind of AirPods is that you can also tell Siri (the artificial intelligent assistant) to do things for you. However, you dont have to use Siri to control your music playback (luckily). You can use a combination of taps and swipe depending on which AirPods you have.On AirPods 2nd generation you use a double tap to play, skip or answer the phone.AirPods 3 and 4 use a force sensor. Its one press for play, pause or answer call, two presses to skip forward, and three presses to skip back. Press and hold to activate Siri.AirPods Pro 2 use touch control with different presses for different features. Its one press for play, pause or answer call, two presses to skip forward, three presses to skip back. You press and hold to switch between Active Noise Cancellation and Adaptive Transparency, swipe up and down to adjust volume, and you Say Hey Siri to trigger the voice assistant.AirPods Max feature a DigitalCrown that you turn to control volume, press to play, pause or answer a call, press twice to skip, three times to go back, and press and hold to activate Siri (or say Hey Siri). Theres also a Noise control button to switch between Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode.Theres a Noise control button to switch between Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode on the AIrPods Max.AppleWaterproofing: Are AirPods waterproof?Given that a lot of people like to wear headphones when exercising or walking around outside, so the question can AirPods get wet is a fair one. The answer to the question is that the AirPods 4 generation and AirPods Pro 2 are sweat and water resistant (IPX4 rated), according to Apple. Which means you can wear then when exercising, in the shower and in the rain, but not in the swimming pool. The AirPods arent considered water resistant.Noise canceling: Are AirPods noise canceling? The AirPods Max, AirPods Pro 2 and the AirPods 4 offer Active Noise Cancelation. Noise cancellation works by using a microphone to detect external sounds and then countering them by playing anti-noise. The AirPods Pro 2 offer better noise cancellation thanks to a new driver and improved acoustic algorithms as well as better microphones and a new speaker grille on top of each earbud to help filter out outside sounds.Apple also offers the AirPods 4 without Active Noise Cancelation.Active Noise Cancellation isnt the only sound related feature in the AirPods. There is a Transparency mode available on the AirPods Pro or AirPods Max that lets the outside noise in when you need to hear whats going on around you. You can switch between these two modes by tapping on a location on your AirPods Pro or AirPods Max (indicated by the blue arrows in the image above). Theres a difference between the Transparency Mode on the AirPods Max and the Pro: the AirPods Pro 2 offer Adaptive Transparency, which will minimise the intensity of loud noises like sirens, so you wont be deafened if an ambulance passes while you are using Transparency Mode.Conversation Boost is a feature that came to the AirPods Pro in an October 2021 software update. The feature can be used to enhance the voice of the person talking beside you, which could be helpful for the hard of hearing. The feature can be turned on in iOS Accessibility settings, heres How to use Conversation Boost to turn your AirPods Pro into a hearing aid.Another related feature is Live Listen, which can be used in conjunction with an iPhone or iPad to help you listen to someone speaking from across the room or in a noisy place. You can use Live Listen with AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and also Powerbeats Pro or Beats Fit Pro. Read How to use Live Listen. Sound quality: Which AirPods have the best sound quality?Weve never had any reason to criticise any AirPods sound quality, although they arent necessarily the best sounding headphones you can buy. However, we were glad to find that the AirPods 4 and the AirPods Pro 2 use the same H2 chip that processes sound, so the audio quality is similar in both, which the differences due mostly to the eartips in the AirPods Pro 2.Another way that AirPods can create personalized sound is via Personalized Spatial Audio, which requires iOS 16 on iPhones with the TrueDepth camera and is compatible with 1st and 2nd generation AirPods Pro, AirPods, and AirPods Max. It can also be used with Beats Fit Pro. A personal profile based on your unique ear shape is set up for you, based on a photo of your head and each of your ears to create a three-dimensional audio experience when you move your head. Dynamic head tracking can also be beneficial in group FaceTime calls. All AirPods support Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio in Apple Music, but only the 3rd and 4th-generation AirPods, or either generation of the AirPods Pro support Spatial Audio for video with head tracking.Charging and battery lifeAirPods Pro 2, AirPods 3 and AirPods 2 in their charging casesAppleBefore we get onto battery life, a few words on charging. The $129/129 AirPods 4 case charges only through USB-C. The $179/179 AirPods 4 with ANC has USB-C charging but also can charge wirelessly. The charging case for the AirPods Pro 2 includes USB-C and wireless charging. But perhaps even better, you dont need to find a power adapter to plug the cable into: you can reverse charge the 2023 version by plugging the case into any iPhone 15. You can also charge the 2nd-gen AirPods Pro and the MagSafe-equipped 3rd-gen AirPods wirelessly.Heres how the battery life of the different AirPods Apple sells compares: AirPods 4: 5 hours listening or 4.5 hours talking, plus 30hours listening or 20 hours talking from charging case.AirPods 4 with ANC: 4 hours (with ANC on) or 5 hours (with ANC off) listening or 4.5 hours talking, plus 20hours (with ANC on) 0r 30 hours (with ANC off) listening or 20 hours talking from charging case.AirPods Pro 2: 6 hours listening or 4.5 hours talking, plus the AirPods Pro 2 charging case can add a total of 30 hours of listening or 24 hours talking.AirPods Max: 20hrs on one charge, but no charging case boost here. These battery life measures are claimed by Apple. Its worth noting that the AirPods Pro 2 battery life if superior to the 1st generation of that model (previously 4.5 hours and 24 hours listening time). To check the remaining battery life users can hold AirPods next to their iPhone or ask Siri Hows the battery on my AirPods?. Should AirPods need charging a notification will appear on the paired iPhone. Prospective buyers will also want to know how quickly the AirPods will charge or how quickly you can charge them before leaving the house. AirPods 4: 5minutes in the case provides around 1hour of battery life.AirPods Pro 2: 5minutes in the case provides around 1hour of battery life.AirPods Max: 5minutes of charge time provides around 1.5hours of battery life.Again, those are the times quoted by Apple. You wont always be in a hurry to charge your AirPods of course. Under more usual circumstances the AirPods have a variety of ways in which they can be charged. All but the AirPods 4 without ANC can come with a wireless charging case. There did used to be a version of the AirPods 2 that came with a wireless charging case, but Apple no longer sells that model.Compatibility We mentioned already that AirPods dont only work with Apple products. They are Bluetooth headphones and as such can connect to any device that supports Bluetooth. In that respect, there might be some difference based on the fact that both generations of AIrPods and the AirPods Max support Bluetooth 5.0 while the AirPods Pro 2 support Bluetooth 5.3, which brings improvements such as less interference and improved sound quality. So, if you were wondering if AirPods can connect to your PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox, Android or even Samsung phone, the answer is yes. You just need to connect via Bluetooth. One last thing to note: if you have a really old iPhone and want to use AirPods, only the AirPods 2nd gen work with iPhone6, iPhone6 Plus and iPhone5s and the iPadmini3, iPadmini2 and iPadAir (1st generation) and iPodtouch (6th generation). Other AIrPods wont work with those ageing devices. But we cant imagine many AIrPod users will have such old Apple devices. We cover various scenarios separately: How to use AirPods with PlayStation or XboxHow to pair AirPods with a Nintendo Switch (without an adapter)How to connect AirPods to Apple TVWhich AirPods to buyThe AirPods that are right for you will no doubt depend on a variety of factors. Perhaps you want the cheapest option, in which case the AirPods 4 without ANC at $129/129 might look the most attractive. You will need to really want active noise cancellation to spend $50/50 more to get it. But if you are a real music lover the AirPods might not be enough for you. The AirPods Pro offer superior sound and many more benefits. They cost a lot more though, at $249/229. We think they are worth the extra expense, but you might not.If you have money to spend the AirPods Max, which have a very high price in comparison with the rest of the range, at $549/499, do have a lot of appeal. But those who would appreciate what they offer can look beyond Apples offering and probably find something just as good, or better. See: Best over-ear headphones. One other factor influencing your decision though is if you find a good deal on a new or old pair of AirPods. Check out the deals below to see if the AirPods you want are discounted then perhaps you can afford to splash out on the AirPods Pro instead of the AirPods.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views

WWW.MACWORLD.COMApple Pencils compared: Which Apple Pencil works with your iPad?MacworldIn May 2024, Apple unveiled the latest generation of its Pencil stylus for iPadApple Pencil Pro. Its essentially a replacement for the 2nd-generation Apple Pencil, made to support only the newest iPad Air (M2) and iPad Pro (M4) models, and with similar design but several new features. That means Apple now has four products all named Apple Pencil, but two of them are essentially only for products no longer sold as new, but rather only for legacy models. If you want to save money, consider alternative styluses for your iPad. Apple Pencil (1st generation)Read our reviewBest Prices Today:$79 at Best Buy | $99 at Adorama | $99 at AppleThe first Apple Pencil was launched in September 2015. Apple sells it for $99/99/119. It works with the current 10th-generation iPad as well as a number of older iPad models. To charge you plug it into your iPads Lightning port, so you cant use it when charging. It is pressure-sensitive, which is good if you are an artist. We suspect that Apple will soon remove this Pencil from the lineup. It launched in 2018 and Apple sells it for $129/129. It works with recent iPad Air, mini, and Pro, but not the 10th gen iPad or the M2 iPad Air or M4 iPad Pro. This Apple Pencil charges wirelessly. We suspect that Apple will soon remove this Pencil from the lineup. It lacks many of the features of the 2nd generation model, so dont fall into the trap of thinking newer means better. But it is cheaper at $79/79. This is essentially a Pencil with a USB-C port. It lacks pressure sensitivity, which even the 1st gen model has. It doesnt work with the 9th gen iPad or the earliest iPad Pros. Apple Pencil ProPrice When Reviewed:149Best Prices Today:144 at Computeruniverse | 148 at notebooksbilliger.de | 149 at AppleThis is the best Apple Pencil, as long as you have a compatible iPad. Apple sells it for $129/129. It works with the most recent iPad Air (M2) and iPad Pro (M4). This Apple Pencil charges wirelessly, and has all of the features of 2nd-gen Apple Pencil and several more, like haptic feedback, Find My support, and support for rolling and squeeze gestures.Which Apple Pencil: DesignTheres not exactly a lot of room for flamboyant designs or new aesthetics when it comes to something as form-dependent as a stylus. But, the engineers at Apple have been busy, incorporating a few elements that make the Pencils recognizable from each other. In all cases, youre looking at a white plastic, cylindrical casing with no buttons or markings except for the Apple Pencil name. The 1st-Gen Pencil is the only one that is completely round (and has a glossy finish), as the Pro, 2nd-Gen, and USB-C versions have a flattened side so that they can be attached magnetically to the edge of a compatible iPad.FoundryApple has constantly been refining the balance and handling of its Pencil range, as you can see from the fact that with each generation the length of the stylus has slowly been shortened. Heres how they measure up:Apple Pencil (1st Gen): 6.92in/176mm (Length); 0.35in/8.9mm (Diameter)Apple Pencil (2nd Gen): 6.53in/166mm (Length); 0.35in/8.9mm (Diameter)Apple Pencil (USB-C): 6.10in/155mm (Length); 0.29in/7.4mm (Diameter)Apple Pencil Pro: 6.53in/166mm (Length); 0.35in/8.9mm (Diameter)Both the 1st-Gen and USB-C Pencils have a lid at the top end that can be taken off to charge the device. On the 1st-Gen, removing the cap reveals a Lightning connector, while the USB-C slides up to reveal a USB-C port. The 2nd-Gen and Pro models charge wirelessly and dont have a port or connector. At the business end of the Pencil, youll find the replaceable rubber tips that make the Apple Pencil such a comfortable experience. Some of the models have more functionality built into their slender frames, which well cover in the next section.Which Apple Pencil: FeaturesWhile all of the Pencil models will allow you to write notes and sketch on your iPad, they do offer different capabilities depending on the model you choose. The 1st-Gen Pencil delivers a precise writing experience, with low latency and pressure sensitivity to allow thinner and wider pen/brush strokes, plus the ability to sense when you are tilting the stylus for shading and similar techniques.Pairing and charging are done via the Lightning port, as there is no wireless charging in this model, plus you cant magnetically attach it to an iPad. You also dont get the hover feature on iPad Pro models, which enables you to preview where your mark will be made without having to touch the screen. You will also have to make do without the double-tap action to switch between the various pens, brushes, and other tools.AppleThe Gen 2 Pencil offers all of the features included in its predecessor, except for the Lightning port charging and pairing, which is instead achieved wirelessly. It introduces the double-tap feature through a touch-sensitive area near the tip, plus theres the option to have it engraved with a personal message. The Apple Pencil USB-C attaches via a USB-C-to-USB-C cable from your iPads charging port to the Pencil. You can magnetically attach it to an iPad for safe-keeping, but it doesnt charge. It has nearly all the same features as the 1st-Gen Pencil, albeit strangely without pressure sensitivity, which does seem like a step backward. As a minor compensation, you do get the 2nd-Gens hover feature if you own an iPad Pro.The latest is the Apple Pencil Pro, which only supports the iPad Air (M2) and iPad Pro (M4), and presumably future iPad Air and Pro models. It has all the features of the 2nd-Gen model with the addition of roll and squeeze sensitivity, haptic feedback, and Find My support.Which Apple Pencil: CompatibilityEvery Pencil supports different iPads, so youll need to check which model you have before you buy one of the three stylus models Apple offers:Apple Pencil (Gen 1)iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st and 2nd Gen)iPad Pro 10.5-inchiPad Pro 9.7-inchiPad Air (3rd Gen)iPad mini (5th Gen)iPad (6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th Gen)Apple Pencil (Gen 2)iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Gen)iPad Pro 11-inch (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Gen)iPad Air (4th and 5th Gen)iPad mini (6th Gen)Apple Pencil (USB-C)iPad Pro (M4)iPad Air (M2)iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Gen)iPad Pro 11-inch (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Gen)iPad Air (4th and 5th Gen)iPad mini (6th Gen)iPad (10th Gen)Apple Pencil ProiPad Pro (M4)iPad Air (M2)Which Apple Pencil: VerdictSome of the main considerations when considering an Apple Pencil are how you want to use it and which iPad you have. If youre interested in creating art or more decorative writing, then youll no doubt find the pressure sensitivity of the Gen 1, Gen 2, and Pro models an essential feature. Then youll just need to select the one that is compatible with your device. The Gen 2 Pencil does have the additional benefits of wireless charging, plus the double-tap and hover capabilities, although the latter only works on iPad Pro.If you have a newer iPad with a USB-C connector and just want to take down notes, then the USB-C model could serve those purposes admirably, with the added advantage of being the most affordable model available from Apple. If you buy a brand-new iPad Air with M2 or iPad Pro with M4, you can choose between the USB-C model with its very basic functionality or Apple Pencil Pro, which has by far the most features of any Apple Pencil. The edge case is if you have an iPad mini or 10th-gen iPad but really need pressure sensitivity. While you would normally choose the USB-C Pencil for those models, the only compatible Pencil with pressure sensitivity is the first-gen Apple Pencil, which comes with a little USB-C to Lightning charging adapter youll have to use to charge it.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views

WWW.MACWORLD.COMThe best iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro casesMacworldThe iPhone 15 is lots of things, but it isnt indestructible. Drop it, knock it, or scratch it, and it will suffer damage that no one would wish on their expensive new purchase. The most obvious way to protect your iPhone 15, 15 Pro, 15 Plus, or 15 Pro Maxaside from leaving it in the boxis to buy a case that will take the hard knocks and scrapes, leaving your iPhone as Apple intended.A case is more than just a pretty backplate, so we have some expert tips for you to start. We have tested a wide range of iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, and 15 Pro Max cases. Here you can jump straight to the cases that most appeal to you. These iPhone 15 cases wont fit Apples latest iPhone models, so if you have upgraded look at our reviews and comparisons of the best cases for iPhone 16. We have tested plain cases, wallet cases, cases that support bike and car mounts, pouches, sleeves and cases with belt-clips. Theres even a clever case that adds a physical keyboard to your iPhone 15.Best clear casesBest-looking casesBest protective casesBest leather and leather-alternative casesBest battery casesWhat to look for in an iPhone caseProtection: According to surveys in the U.S., 45 percent of phone owners will accidentally damage their phones, on average only 10 weeks after purchase. Keep your iPhone in a case and, whichever way it lands, it should be protected from everyday drops. Make sure the case has a raised lip around the front, which will save the screen from a crack when dropped or scratch when placed face down. Look also for a raised edge around the cameras at the back1mm should be your minimum; some goes as high as 3.6mm.Apple doesnt bother, but many case makers claim their cases either meet or exceed certified military-grade protection, usually MIL-STD-810G, which is a series of U.S. Department of Defense tests to determine the overall durability of material system design of objects. This doesnt mean you can take them into combat, but does imply that the protection offered is robust and tested. The product should have been sequentially dropped onto each face, edge, and corner for a total of 26 drops onto two-inch thick plywood over concrete.Big and bulky doesnt guarantee protection but its a fact that for superior protection your case will add more bulk to your iPhone than a flimsy one.Materials: Thin, soft, and rubbery silicone is a popular phone case material that provides a comfortable grip while not adding any real bulk of the phone. Its great at protecting a phone from abrasions and scratches but not for fall/drop protection. Silicone can attract dirt more easily and is less durable so you might have to change your case more often than products made with tougher materials. Sand-based silicone is a more sustainable material than oil-based plastic.More rigid cases are usually built with polycarbonate plastic. Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) are more flexible and softer to the touch than Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU), which are also flexible but more rigid. Both are more resistant to scratches, shock, and abrasion than basic polycarbonate. While not as thin as silicone, they arent very bulky and are more durable. However, cheaper clear TPU cases can turn yellow after a year or so due to ultraviolet rays. Look for clear cases with anti-yellowing properties.Metal button covers feel more robust than plastic. Some cases leave certain buttons exposed. This is especially true for the iPhone 15s new Action button that seems to have caught out a few case manufacturers.Fit: Aside from protective features, make sure you choose the right case for your exact model. That will ensure that it fits correctly over the buttons for uninterrupted use. Note that some case makers have had problems with the new Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, with their cutouts sometimes not fitting exactly. Such problems will be ironed out quickly by trusted case manufacturers, such as those in our iPhone 15 case reviews below, but cheaper online brands may pose more of a risk in this regard.MagSafe: Also ensure that the case is MagSafe compatible so that you can charge wirelessly with a MagSafe charger while your iPhone 15 stays in its case. Check out our tests of the best MagSafe wireless chargers. You can, of course, still charge via a cablewhich will always be the fastest way to charge an iPhonebut make sure you use a USB-C to USB-C cable for iPhone 15 and at least a 20W USB-C chargerwe recommend you start with a 30W or 45W charger; check out our recommended best iPhone chargers.MagSafe requires magnets, which usually means a giant white ring on the back of compatible clear cases. Colored, patterned or leather cases hide their magnets better.Style: Finally, while protection and charging are key factors to your iPhone 15 case, many of us appreciate some individuality to mark out the phone as ours. If this is important to you, look out for color choice and customization options. The iPhone 15 colors arent overly exciting and one of the joys of buying a new phone is getting a new look, as most other things stay the same even with a brand new iPhone. How we testedAll cases were tested using an iPhone 15 Pro; case weights listed below are for cases designed for that model. We didnt throw our phone out of speeding cars or from the top of tall buildings. We have included only trusted brands so we have to take their word for the actual drop testing. But we have had days of hand-on experience with each case reviewed here.Best clear iPhone cases for iPhone 15, 15 Plus, Pro and Pro MaxApple makes its iPhones look as nice as it can, so why cover that up with a non-transparent case? While there are some great iPhone 15 cases in different colors and patterns, in leather and vegan alternatives, for many a simple, clear case is all that they need.1. Why pick out a pink or yellow iPhone 15, only to cover it up in a black plastic case? With Apples Clear case, you get decent protection without ruining the look of the phone, although the prominent MagSafe icon on the back isnt necessary, surely. Its made from a blend of optically clear polycarbonate and other flexible materials, with a scratch-resistant coating on both the inside and outside. While its more protective than silicone cases and features a robust-looking 2mm camera lip, you can find tougher cases, which we have reviewed below. At 29g its super light, and while the rigid case adds a little bulk, its worth a little compromise for that layer of protection There are also cheaper clear cases, which we have also tested for you. But the Apple badge is a sure sign of quality, as youd expect. The colors on the new iPhone 15 models arent exactly exciting, though, so we wouldnt blame you for deciding on something more joyful.2. Its made from a crystal-clear polymer, which ESR claims resists yellowing for longer than cheaper cases. It isnt wireless compatible so youll need to flip the case off if charging wirelessly. While its not too big a deal, Id still pay extra upfront not to have to do that every time I want to charge wirelessly. This bendable case weighs just 28g, although thats only 1g lighter than Apples Clear Case reviewed above.3. It has a TPU frame. One level up is the flexible Hybrid Soft + Snap Case thats available in a range of clear/colored tones. The Snap part of its name relates to its MagSafe compatibility. MagSafe means a more secure connection, and therefore more efficient power exchange, resulting in a faster charge. It promises superior drop protection with its TPU bumpers, metal buttons, and raised edges protecting the screen and camera lens. The metal camera guard is one of the toughest weve seen in our tests. It weighs 39gthats 10g heavier than the Apple Clear Case but hardly a difference youll notice in hand or pocket. QDOS claims that 50-73% of the case is made from recycled materials. The Hybrid Force + Snap Case has a rigid polycarbonate back and a flexible TPU frame with air cushions, compared to the Hybrid Softs soft-touch polycarbonate back panel and TPU bumper. It weighs 30g, so is a little lighterpossibly because its button covers are plastic rather than metal. It also has an antimicrobial treatment that QDOS claims eliminates up to 99.9% of bacteria. The camera lip is a protective 2mm but plastic rather than the metal as found on the Soft + Snap Case. All three cases can absorb falls up to 2m, claims QDOS, and feature an anti-yellowing agent for long-lasting transparency. Aside from its clear cases, QDOS also sells a Touch Pure + Snap Case range of colored cases that are MagSafe compatible, in blue, green, pink, gray, and black. It features a rigid polycarbonate back with a liquid silicone coating.4. Make sure you choose your exact model. It is transparent aside from the giant MagSafe icon, MagSafe compatible and more affordable than the Apple clear case. And the kickstand is an added bonus, working in both landscape and portrait modes. The metal stand is an extra camera guard when not in use. ESR even suggests you can use it to carry your iPhone on your finger when your hands are full. If so, youll be interested in the protection it offers if it slides off your fingerTheres the usual tough talk of military-grade protection, with the case featuring shock-absorbing AirGuard corners and a decent 1.6mm camera lip. At 40g, its one of the heavier clear cases, which is caused by the handy kickstand.ESRESR has a range of iPhone 15 cases. The toughest is the iPhone 15 Armor Tough Case with Stash Stand (above), which features a two-part rugged MagSafe case with Stash Stand, built-in tempered-glass screen protector, dual-layer edges and even individual Armorite lens protectors. Made of 600D Aramid Fiber (aka bullet-proof Kevlar) it is tough and will save the back of your iPhone from scratches and everyday wear and tear, but it doesnt offer any real drop protection. The case certainly adds some grip to the phone, which should make it less likely to fall from your hand in the first place, and the corners of the phone are covered but with no true impact resistance. We also found the case to be the hardest to prise off the iPhone. Theres no real reason to remove it as it is MagSafe compatible but if you do feel the need for your phone to be free, youll have to follow video instructions to work out how (basically press the case up from the top corners).Best-looking iPhone cases for iPhone 15, 15 Plus, Pro and Pro MaxWhile some will prefer a clear case to keep their iPhones natural color, others want a splash of difference, from plain new colors, through pretty or cool patterns, to full customizable designs.1. The Woodland Camo color option looks the toughestwhich lives up to its claimed 5x military testingbut this case is also available in a flowery Orchid design. Its a two-piece pressure-fitted design that means you wont want to be removing it often but you shouldnt have to as it charges via MagSafe even in the rugged super-grippy case. Torras claims its shock-absorbing ShockMAT technology gives 12-foot drop protection, and the clear cases are resistant to yellowing.Best protective iPhone cases for iPhone 15, 15 Plus, Pro and Pro MaxA case isnt there just to make your iPhone look pretty. The best cases offer reasonable protection while adding as little bulk as possible by using the latest, strongest materials.Kevlar, which you might know is the material used to make bulletproof vests; its also known as Aramid Fiber. Graphene is even stronger. Zagg claims the graphene used in its Denali Snap case is harder than a diamond, yet more elastic than rubber, and up to 200x stronger than steel. That suggests a fall onto the pavement might not be fatal for your phone. Some protective iPhone cases go full out and dont care about their bulk as long as they protect your iPhone from the biggest disasters that can befall it. Weve tested protective iPhone 15 cases from the thin to the very thick.Below our list of the best iPhone 15 cases, we look deeper into which materials offer the best iPhone protection.1. Graphene is the strongest material known to man, and, I presume, any animal. See below this list of recommended iPhone 15 cases for more on the most protective phone case materials. The cases border features TPU. The camera lip isnt as high as on some cases but it should protect the lenses when the phone is placed down flat.Zagg even offers a limited lifetime warranty against wear and damage. Youre unlikely to still be needing an iPhone 15 case in a decade or so, but we appreciate the warranty. Its rugged, textured finish adds a good grip, and when its not in your hand theres an option for an integrated metal kickstand that works in both landscape and portrait modes. An antimicrobial treatment promises no smelly bacteria taking home on your case.Zagg has a few iPhone 15 case models to choose from, including a clear case called Crystal Palace, available in MagSafe (Crystal Palace Snap) or non-MagSafe versions. Its 13-foot (4m) drop protection is still impressive.2. Its a woven fiber, which gives it a very slight textured feel, which should help stop the iPhone from falling out of your hand. That said, it still feels pretty smooth in our hands-on experience with the case.On the back, youll find a metal frame giving raised protection around the camera lensesone of the best weve seen. The buttons on the sides are nicely solid in the TPU frame that offers superior shock resistance. According to Scientific American, Kevlar is five times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis and provides reliable performance and solid strength. Its the material used for bulletproof vests, cut-resistant gloves and blast and flame barriers. That sounds like more than enough protection for a simple phone case. But the new tough material on the block is Graphene, which scientists claim is the strongest material ever discovered. Due to the strength of its 0.142 Nm-long carbon bonds, graphene [has an] ultimate tensile strength of 130,000,000,000 Pascals (or 130 gigapascals), compared to 400,000,000 for A36 structural steel, or 375,700,000 for Aramid (Kevlar).Graphene is apparently 200 times stronger than steel, a substantial increase in strength over Kevlar (5x).In ballistic tests, graphene was able to absorb approximately 0.92MJ/kg of projectile energy, while steel can typically absorb 0.08MJ/kg when both are being tested at similar speeds.Graphenes ability to dissipate energy is due to a high degree of stiffness combined with low densitymeaning that energy can move through it very quickly, allowing for the dissipation of energy from something traveling as fast as a bullet.Want to buy a new iPhone 15?
