Series three started filming in summer 2024, so there shouldnt be too long to wait for the return of Dylan Llewellyn, Jon Pointing, Izuka Hoyle, Camille Coduri and Harriet Webbs characters.Black Doves Series 2Joe Bartons darkly funny, very violent, London-set spy thriller was already renewed for a second series before the first arrived on Netflix just before Christmas 2024, so we know well be getting more from Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaws mercenary spooks whenever their doubtlessly packed schedules align. The first series had a mediocre story and thinly drawn characters, but charisma and style in spades, so theres every chance that the second run could be magnificent. Black Mirror Series 7Six brand new episodes of Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones sci-fi anthology will arrive on Netflix in 2025, including one sequel to a previous story, and two feature-length instalments. Black Mirror will revisit USS Callister once again in the shows first ever follow-up episode, hence the return of The Penguins Cristin Milioti in the cast list which also includes: Awkwafina, Peter Capaldi, Paul Giamatti, Rashida Jones, Jimmi Simpson, Chris ODowd, Harriet Walter and many more.Blue Lights Series 3Declan Lawn and Adam Pattersons Belfast-set BBC One police drama was announced as being simultaneously renewed for both a third and fourth series in early 2024, so fans can rest easy about its future. Previous companion Ruby Sunday will also reappear, along with the UNIT gang and Anita Dobsons mysterious Mrs Flood. The story this time (expected to conclude once again with a two-parter) involves the Doctor trying to get Belinda back home but being stopped by mysterious forces.Gangs of London Series 3Gareth Evans ultra-violent, ultra-stylish family crime saga Gangs of London will return in 2025 for its third series, in which a number of Londoners are killed when a batch of cocaine is spiked. Theres no steer as yet on the new story or a release date, but well bring you news when it arrives.Industry Season 4AKA the best show on TV youre not watching (unless you are in which case, youve probably spent the last few months spreading the word and trying to get everybody else on board), HBO/BBC coproduction Industry crept onto screens in 2020 and has steadily grown in excellence since then. Season three of the London-set finance drama, which featured the arrival of Kit Harington as new character Lord Muck (yes, Muck), was masterful. Thank goodness that a fourth run has already been confirmed but dont expect it any time soon.Ludwig Series 2David Mitchell will be back as identical twins John and James Taylor in Ludwig, Mark Brotherhoods puzzle-based crime series for BBC One. This Mitchell-vehicle has a ludicrous premise (socially awkward puzzle-loving twin impersonates his confident and popular police detective brother in order to investigate the disappearance of the latter) but gets by easily on comfort and charm. It was a big hit for the BBC, so expect to hear much more fanfare about the second run ahead of its arrival.Read more Red Eye Series 2Richard Armitage (of The Hobbit and Harlan Coben thriller fame) will return in series two of ITV action thriller Red Eye. The real-time gimmick with this murder-mystery was paired with an unusual setting on board a flight between London and Beijing. If series two is anything like its predecessor, expect ludicrous twists and a great deal of switch-your-brain-off fun.Rivals Series 2Did any TV series have as much fun as Disney+s Rivals in 2024? Doubtful. This 1980s-set Jilly Cooper adaptation about horsey-set toffs bonking in fictional Rutshire (and to a lesser extent, about two companies battling for regional franchise television rights) delighted in itself, and made viewers pretty delighted too. Thank heavens then, for the second series which will follow on the romance between Rupert and Taggie, and reveal what happens after that messy cliffhanger. Theres plenty of source material from Cooper still to adapt, so there should be no worries on that front.SAS: Rogue Heroes Series 2Steven Knights WWII-set action drama continues with more feats of derring-do from the maverick unit of elite soldiers. This time, the gang is in Europe committing insubordinations and winning the war by the skin of their teeth. It features a cast including rumoured future-Bond Connor Swindells, Jack OConnor, Dominic West, Con ONeill and more. All episodes are streaming now on BBC iPlayer, following their New Years Day release. Sherwood Series 3Unless James Graham and co. really get their skates on, Sherwoods third series isnt likely to arrive on BBC One in 2025, but seeing as its been officially commissioned, were including it here anyway. Inspired by local events in his home town of Nottinghamshire, Grahams acclaimed state-of-the-nation drama tells political stories through personal perspectives. The first two series starred Lesley Manville, David Morrissey, Lorraine Ashbourne and more first-rate British acting talent. Expect the same for series three.Shetland Series 10DCI Calder and DI Tosh solved the murders of Annie and Bergen in Shetland series nine, leaving space in their caseload for a new investigation for the already-commissioned tenth series of this Shetland-set crime drama. Expect new guest cast, more twists, and most importantly, some excellent knitwear.Slow Horses Series 5Filming on the fifth series of Apple TV+s word-of-mouth hit Slow Horses finished in summer 2024, so fans are just waiting on the post-production and crossing their fingers for a mid-2025 release. The spy thriller about an MI5 outpost of washed-up and disgraced agents, each of whom has their own reason for ending up in Slough House, comes adapted from the Mick Herron novel series by The Thick of It writer Will Smith, and stars Gary Oldman in the now-iconic TV role of Jackson Lamb. Unmissable, and series six has already been commissioned. Sweetpea Series 2Fallout and Yellow Jackets Ella Purnell will be back in the role of Rhiannon, an overlooked wallflower with a dark secret in the second series of this Sky serial killer drama, adapted from the novel by CJ Sansom.Taskmaster Series 19 & 20Greg Davies and Alex Hornes comedians competing in ridiculous tasks for points show will return, twice in 2025. Channel 4 were thoughtful enough to commission Taskmaster in a job-lot all the way up to series 21, so were guaranteed at least one more after series 19 and 20. As is traditional, the line-ups for those are being kept under-wraps but well pass them on as soon as were allowed.The Day of the Jackal Series 2Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch return as the respective mouse and cat in this cat-and-mouse spy action-thriller for Sky. The first series reworked Frederick Forsyths popular novel about an expert marksman planning to commit a high-profile political assassination, moving it to a modern setting and following the two lead characters (Redmaynes assassin and Lynchs MI6 agent) home to their families. Expect more extraordinary stunts and intense escapes in series two.The Devils Hour Series 3Prime Videos parallel-timelines drama filmed its third and final series at the same time as its second, so this ones already in the can. The fantasy-horror stars Peter Capaldi as a mysterious man who knows the future and works to change it, alongside Jessica Raine as a woman whose life is unalterably affected by his actions. The first series had almost too much going on to follow, but the second run was a steep improvement which narrowed its focus to a central question: when you save someones life, are you responsible for them? Highly recommended.The Gold Series 2The first series Neil Forsyths solid true crime drama based on the infamous Brinks-Mat gold heist ended with a note of to be continued, so hooray that the BBC is continuing it. Hugh Bonneville, Emun Elliott and Charlotte Spencers Scotland Yard detectives may have got their men, but only half of the money that resulted from the gold theft had been traced. Cue: the next part of the investigation, following the cash through international drug gangs and beyond.The Rig Series 2David Macphersons eco-sci-fi thriller is back on Prime Video with six new episodes following some strange events at a cluster of remote Scottish oil rigs in series one. Line of Dutys Martin Compston returns, along with Schitts Creeks Emily Hampshire, plus Iain Glen, Owen Teale and more. Jan 03, 2025Ravie LakshmananDevOps / Software DevelopmentMicrosoft has announced that it's making an "unexpected change" to the way .NET installers and archives are distributed, requiring developers to update their production and DevOps infrastructure."We expect that most users will not be directly affected, however, it is critical that you validate if you are affected and to watch for downtime or other kinds of breakage," Richard Lander, a program manager on the .NET team, said in a statement last week.The move is the result of the fact that some .NET binaries and installers are hosted on Azure Content Delivery Network (CDN) domains that end in .azureedge[.]net -- dotnetcli.azureedge.net and dotnetbuilds.azureedge.net -- which are hosted on Edgio.Last month, web infrastructure and security company Akamai acquired select assets from Edgio following its bankruptcy. As part of this transition, the Edgio platform is scheduled to end service on January 15, 2025.Given that the .azureedge[.]net domains could cease to become unavailable in the future, Microsoft said it's migrating to Azure Front Door CDNs. The Windows maker said it will automatically migrate customers' workloads by January 7, 2025, if no action is taken.However, it's worth noting that automatic migration will not be possible for endpoints with *.vo.msecnd.net domains. Users who plan to migrate to Akamai or another CDN provider are also required to set the Feature Flag DoNotForceMigrateEdgioCDNProfiles before January 7, 2025, so as to prevent automatic migration to Azure Front Door."Note you will have until January 14, 2025 to complete your migration to another CDN, but again Microsoft cannot guarantee your services will be available on the Edgio platform before this date," Microsoft said."Please be advised we will need to halt all configuration changes to Azure CDN by Edgio profiles starting on January 3, 2025. This means you will not be able to update your CDN profile configuration, but your services on Azure CDN from Edgio will still operate until you are migrated or the Edgio platform is shut down on January 15, 2025. For a young architect, its a pretty sweet gig to design a school of architecture, especially if you happen to be the head of that school. But its not so great if, just a few years later, the students attempt to burn the school down. That architect was Paul Rudolph, quintessential man of the south, born in rural Kentucky, raised in Alabama. He took his architecture BA at Alabama Polytechnic Institute before venturing north to Harvard to study at Walter Gropiuss Graduate School of Design.Yale University appointed Rudolph as head of school and he subsequently designed its Arts and Architecture Building, 1958-1963. The 1969 blaze may have been the result of arson by students protesting against the Vietnam war; it may have been to do with departmental politics; it was possibly an outcry against Brutalism itself. Nevertheless, the tough concrete building survived the conflagration and, in 2007, it was named Rudolph Hall to honour its architect.Exhibition installation (credit: Eileen Travell, courtesy of The Met)The Metropolitan Museum of Art does not often exhibit modern architecture the last time was in 1974 so this timely show is something of a milestone, riding a wave of renewed interest in Brutalism. Curated by Abraham Thomas, the excellent exhibition charts key points in Rudolphs long career featuring many loans from the Library of Congress, to which Rudolph consigned his archive of more than 100,000 items just before his death.AdvertisementExhibits range from the humble Rudolphs coloured pencils, Rotring pens, drawing instruments, a fragment of rough wooden formwork for the ribbed concrete of the Yale Arts and Architecture building to the sublime, in the form of many examples of his stupendous draughtsmanship and several models. Its tempting to speculate that such close attention might have caused him a mental breakdown; he hinted at depression in remarks about his Beekman Place penthouse. Perhaps he wasnt helped by the use of his buildings in Venturi and Scott Browns Learning from Las Vegas as illustrations of what not to do; or by Rudolphs Harvard contemporary, Philip Johnson, bringing Postmodernism to the attention of the world by designing the Chippendale skyscraper, the AT&T building. It is more likely that Brutalisms moment in the sun passed by and Rudolph began to be bypassed for commissions.Lower Manhattan Expressway Project, New York, New York (Perspective to the East), 1972 (credit: Gift of The Howard Gilman Foundation)His most audacious scheme, initially devised in the 1940s by infamous New York planner Robert Moses, was the Lower Manhattan Expressway or LOMEX (see top image). The gigantic Y-shaped structure was intended to squat on southern Manhattan.Like so many of Rudolphs plans, it was too overwhelming ever to succeed, requiring the elimination of acres of vibrant but untidy districts. A loose coalition of artists, conservationists and residents quickly organised to oppose LOMEX, which was eventually dropped. The key drawing Rudolph prepared for LOMEX is well known to generations of architecture students as the cover image for Reyner Banhams Megastructure: Urban Futures of the Recent Past, 1976. Thomas has selected some clips from films that used Rudolphs buildings as locations, hinting at the actual experience of using Rudolphs multilevel buildings.Architectural model for the proposed Sino Tower (unbuilt), Hong Kong, 1989 (photo: Eileen Travell)Late in his career, Rudolph designed a number of projects in south-east Asia, which he hoped would boost his profile, but these were often completed by other architects. One example is the Bond Centre (1988) in Hong Kong, now called the Lippo Centre, which, as intended by Rudolph, was a pair of towers connected at several levels by aerial walkways. Nolah Evolution Hybrid construction and feelThe Nolah Evolution Hybrid is a thick mattress, measuring in at 15 inches tall, which means you might want to invest in some deep-pocketed sheets, should you decide to get the Nolah Evolution or any other bed with comparable height.The bottommost layer is a thin layer of high-density support foam. You won't be feeling this layer when you sleep on the mattress. It's only here so the 8-inch layer of pocketed coils has a stable foundation. These coils are a thicker gauge along the perimeter of the mattress and in the center third to provide reinforced edge support and zoned support. I was recently able to tour the factory where Nolah makes this mattress, along with dozens of others, and see how the coils get made. The coils are exactly what Nolah says they are.Above the coil layer are two different layers of responsive transition foam, and above the transition foam is a layer of zoned AirFoam. This foam is similar to the main comfort layers found in the Nolah Original 10 and Signature 12, and it has some unique characteristics. It has a similar body-conforming quality to a more traditional memory foam while being much more responsive, providing those other Nolah beds with more of a mixed or blended foam feel.The Nolah Evolution has a thick pillow-top above the AirFoam, providing a fluffy, responsive pillow-top feel that I would compare favorably to beds I have slept on in hotels. I have a hard time picturing people trying this bed and flat-out finding it uncomfortable. These firmness profiles give sleepers plenty of options that should fit most sleeping preferences.The plush model we rated between a medium-soft and a medium on our firmness scale, closer to the medium-soft end of the spectrum. This option will appeal to side sleepers looking for maximum pressure relief.The luxury-firm model is noticeably firmer than the plush, landing at flat medium, which should work well for most sleeper types, especially couples and combination sleepers.The firm model will be around a medium-firm, which will appeal to back, stomach and combination sleepers.The luxury-firm is the most popular and the one I recommend for people sharing this mattress and people who favor their side, like myself, but I think having specialized firmness profiles available is a big bonus.There is also a variant of this mattress called the Nolah Evolution Comfort Plus that uses extra thick gauge coils and is slightly firmer than the firm model of the base Nolah Evolution (but not by much). This bed is designed to be extra durable and supportive for heavier individuals.Nolah Evolution Hybrid mattress performanceEdge supportThe edge support on this mattress is excellent thanks to the reinforced perimeter coils that I mentioned earlier. Having good edge support is important for couples sharing a mattress because one or both of you could wind up sleeping close to the edge of the bed, and if the edge support is lacking, it can feel like you are going to roll off the bed which is not conducive to good sleep. I don't think couples will have any issues with the Evolution Hybrid. Jon Gomez - CNETMotion isolationIf you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night because your partner tosses and turns a lot, having a mattress that does a good job of isolating cross-mattress motion is important.The Nolah Evolution Hybrid is average overall in this category. The support layer is pocketed coils, which have almost entirely replaced traditional innersprings in mattress design. These coils do a much better job at isolating motion, so we don't see this being a deal-breaker for the vast majority of sleepers. But if you're a really light sleeper who wakes up easily when your partner tosses and turns, it could happen more on this bed than others. In that case, you might want to opt for a foam mattress like a Tempur-Pedic.Temperature regulationThe original model of the Nolah Evolution Hybrid had a darker cover that was cool to the touch. The current model has a different cover that is made of organic cotton and we didn't observe it to be active cooling.I don't think the cover swap impacts the temperature regulation of the mattress all that much -- the previous version was a bit cooler but the new version should still sleep temperature neutral and not heat up on you much at night. This is 1/10 AI predictions for 2025. AGI and the Singularity have been hot topics in AI, sparking both fear and excitement. Sam Altman even recently predicted AGI would arrive in 2025, and Elon Musk 2026. Bold are more about hype than reality. In 2025, there will be no AGI but Large Language Models will find their Killer App.What are AGI and the Singularity?AGI (Artificial General Intelligence): This refers to an advanced AI that can think, learn, and solve problems across a wide range of tasks, just like a human.The Singularity: This is the idea of AI surpassing human intelligence, improving itself endlessly, and causing massive, unpredictable changes in society.My prediction: we wont see any of this in 2025. Lets dig into the technology to understand why we are not even close.Sentence Completion is Not Intelligence or AGIGenerative AI, like OpenAIs GPT models, can hold human-like conversations. That sounds amazing. But it is limited to spotting and repeating patterns. ChatGPT and similar systems are based on so called Large Language Models. They work by predicting the most statistically probable next word or token based on their training data. One example:Input: Life is like a box ofPrediction: chocolates (thanks to Forrest Gump).This isnt real understandingits just pattern matching. Generative AI doesnt consider other options like box of surprises. It might seem intelligent because it can give polished responses, but its no more self-aware than a chess computer that doesnt care if it loses a game.We have heard a lot about AGI but it wont happen in 2025.No AGI in 2025OpenAIs "o1": isnt that the first step for AGI?MORE FOR YOUNo, its not. Lets see what it is. OpenAIs O1, released in 2024, does not directly answer a given question. Instead, it creates a plan to determine the best way to answer it. It then critiques its response, improves it, and continues refining. This chained output is truly impressive.Lets critique the statement: 'Life is like a box of chocolates.'Clich Factor: Overused.Limited Scope: Focuses solely on unpredictability.Cultural Bias: May not resonate universally.Not bad... Based on this critique, the AI can now craft an improved sentence.2025 will see many of those chains but not AGII recently launched an eCornell online course to train students to think about products using AI and data. To make this rather technical AI and product course accessible as a no-code course, I created the same iterative process as we see with o1.First, students formulate the product concept (plan).Next, the AI tool generates code autonomously (generation).During runtime, errors may arise (test).The AI tool then critiques its own output (critique) and iteratively refines it.The innovation lies in OpenAI's ability to pass through this loop multiple times to enhance the answer. But is this intelligence? No. Its a fixed framework and not dynamic. Neither is this approach scalable. The more critique cycles you allow the model, the more facets of the problem it can address, but this comes at the cost of increased time.Dont get me wrong. O1 is amazing but it as well highlights the fundamental technological challenge we face in the quest to achieve AGI.The Barriers to get to AGIHumans can think fast and instinctively (System 1) or slowly and logically (System 2). AI only works through patterns, missing this balance.AI struggles with context and often misses important details humans pick up naturally.Current AI builds outputs on previous ones (called autoregressive models), so mistakes can snowball.Many researchers believe that much of this might be fixable. When? 2050? 2030? .. but not this year.What Will Happen in 2025?In 2025, well see more narrow AI solutions integrated into chains similar to OpenAIs "o1" approach. These systems will be designed to excel at specific tasks and, when combined, will enhance productivity and surpass human performance in many areas. This development will be exciting, but its important to emphasize that these advancements will not constitute AGI. Focusing on the real risks and opportunities of AI, rather than getting sidetracked by AGI debates, and whether AGI will replace us. See here a quick video about my view. Weighing 260 grams, they can be worn for about an hour before the earpads become uncomfortable. The left earcup has a large b button for play/pause and activating the voice assistant, while volume controls are integrated above and below the b button. Even Spotify tracks sound better in this mode.
