• Samsungs New Upgrade PromiseBad Timing For Apple And iPhone
    www.forbes.com
Samsung vs Apple just got more interesting. AFP via Getty ImagesTiming really is everythingsometimes. Thats certainly the case for Samsung versus Apple this week, as the two battle it out in the premium smartphone segment. Samsung is about to make an exciting upgrade move just as Apples key defense has suddenly been undermined by a surprising mistake.Samsung is now readying its new Galaxy S25 flagship for launch, which will be at the forefront of the companys push to AI everything and will come with the innovative Android 15 and the delayed release of One UI 7. Security and privacyApples core DNAhas become the latest battleground between the two phone giants, and Samsung had made clear its intent to close the gap. One UI 7 does exactly that.Samsung says One UI 7 enhances security and privacy in the age of AI, giving users greater transparency and choice. The company also says now is the turning point of AI technology, and we need bold innovation that goes beyond the existing methods of success... lets establish ourselves as a leading device AI company this year through advanced intelligence.MORE FOR YOUThis aligns with the latest upgrade promise ahead of the Galaxy S25 launch, with reliable leaker Ice Universe posting on X that Samsung Galaxy S25 will tell Apple what leading AI is. Many new AI functions of S25 have not been leaked so far, which is very surprising to me.Samsung is reportedly about to show Apple what AI is really all about, Phone Arena suggests. Samsung has everything in place to make a statement about GalaxyAI with its 2025 flagship line. For security purposes, much of the AI activities handled by the Galaxy S25 line will stay on-device... The tweet from Ice Universe sets the bar high and we look forward to seeing the new AI features that allow Samsung to meet the height of that bar.We had expected on-device versus off-device AI processing to define the difference between Apples and Samsungs devices, with the Galaxy-maker tied to Googles way of working holding it back from matching Apples end-to-end control. Yes, Apple links to ChatGPT in the way Samsung links to Gemini, but the iMaker is careful to clearly call out whenever user data goes off-device.But Apples real groundbreaking move was the development of Private Cloud Compute. This extends the secure device enclave through to Apples cloud, ensuring that personal user data sent to PCC isnt accessible to anyone other than the usernot even to Apple. Apple says PCC is the most advanced security architecture ever deployed for cloud AI compute at scale.Meanwhile, in November, Samsungs Kim Dae-hyun promised generated AI that meets the level of user needs, operational technology that enhances personalized experience and usability, and security technology that protects personal information safely... When I wake up in the morning, an AI secretary [will] brief today's schedule and handle what I want with a natural conversation as if talking to a person is typical. The era of using AI like this will become our daily life, not the future. The enabler for this is Samsungs hybrid-AI. A technology that uses on-device AI and cloud AI together to provide a balance of speed and safety. If you use on-device AI, which has its advantages of fast response speed and strong privacy protection in the device, and cloud AI, which provides various functions based on massive data and high-performance computing, you can provide the optimal AI experience in various environments and conditions. And so, back in November, I suggested that you can see how this new privacy battle is likely to play out... [and that] Samsung [needs] a response to Apples PCC, to provide a closer match. What we have seen now, though, appears more a renewed commitment to the hybrid AI alternative. But all that has suddenly been clouded by the furor this week around Apples enhanced visual search and its newly agreed $95 million settlement for allegedly eavesdropping on users through its Siri AI assistant. A raft of ominous headlines followed: Apples New Photo Feature Quietly Violates What Happens on Your iPhone, Stays on Your iPhone, and This sneaky iOS 18 setting shares your photos with Apple, and Apple to pay $95 million in Siri spying lawsuit. And suddenly those dividing lines werent quite so clear anymore. On photo search, what Apple is doing is designed to preserve user privacy while deploying AI to link photos to a central dataset of landmarks. But 99% of users wont understand homomorphic encryption, differential privacy and OHTTP relays that hide IP addresses. Optically, it seems just like the hybrid-AI Samsung is promoting.Apples real mistake has been a lack of transparency. Crypto expert Matthew Green complained that its very frustrating when you learn about a service two days before New Years and you find that its already been enabled on your phone, while tech analyst Michael Tsai warned that not only is it not opt-in, but you cant effectively opt out if it starts uploading metadata about your photos before you even use the search feature. It does this even if youve already opted out of uploading your photos to iCloud... I dont think the company is living up to its ideals here. And on the Siri front, the allegations date back five years to a time when almost all voice assistants were being caught out for blurring the lines between on and off. This is just a case of awkward timing, putting Apples AI privacy back in the headlines for long-gone problems. I reached out to Apple for any response to the furor on its AI photo searchnothing so far.But in combination, its very bad timing for the locked-down iPhone to seem less locked down that before. Samsung will herald its AI future at CES this week, and while the S25 will be more capable than any Galaxy before to process AI on-device, the reality is this is going to be a hybrid solution and the clear differences users had been steered towards are more blurry than before. The Samsung versus Apple AI stakes have just got more interesting, and 2025 is still less than a week old.

  • PS4 Emulation On Steam Deck Just Hit A Surprising Milestone
    www.forbes.com
Bloodborne running on Steam DeckDeck Wizard via YouTubeTo quote a certain Atlus game I cant stop playing, Time marches on, and the age of a new king draws nearer. This particular king, of course, is the Steam Deck, which has been a retro gamers dream since it launched in 2022. But unless youve been paying close attention to the emulation scene lately, you may have missed the news that PlayStation 4 emulation is now up and running on Steam Deck. And its looking very promising. While I knew PS4 emulation was inevitable on PC, I honestly didnt think wed see it in a playable status on something relatively underpowered like the Steam Deck. After all, even PS3 emulation can still be hit or miss. And yet, PS4 emulation looks to be making some confident strides forward. As evidence of that, here is the tragically not-yet-remastered Bloodborne a game never released for PC running at ~30FPS on Steam Deck courtesy of the Deck Wizard channel:There are some dips below 30FPS, but Im surprised to see it in a playable state. Youll notice that even during more chaotic parts of gameplay, the framerate remains pretty stable. Now, consider that as of just a few months ago, the emulation wizards hadnt even managed to get Bloodborne running beyond the main menu.Speaking of those developer wizards... what makes this all possible is the ShadPS4 project, a PS4 emulator for Windows, Linux, and macOS thats in the early stages of development. During the second half of 2024, however, it has been progressing forward at an increasingly productive pace.MORE FOR YOUCurrently, ShadPS4 lists Dark Souls Remastered, Red Dead Redemption, Journey, Transformers: Devastation (yay!), Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, and many others as playable. However, it seems like more demanding games with complex graphics (read: not 2D) present more of a challenge. For example, inFamous: Second Son barely reached in-game status in September 2024.Still, things are promising enough that the EmuDeck team has added ShadPS4 into its default suite of emulators that get installed. So, if youre not afraid of some instability and want to test the bleeding edge of PS4 emulation on Steam Deck, here is a terrific guide on getting EmuDeck installed and configured.

  • The lowly neighborhood strip mall might be the hottest new thing in commercial real estate
    www.businessinsider.com
Investors are seeing new value in the strip mall.A lack of supply and an uptick in in-person neighborhood shopping has increased their value. One commercial real estate investor called the opportunity a "retail renaissance."Strip malls, of all things, appear to be trending up.After decades of decline brought on by the rise of large box stores, e-commerce, and the pandemic, the humble and sometimes derided neighborhood shopping center had long been on the outs. Many retailers shifted focus, buying and building large fulfillment warehouses instead of storefronts. That's led to a perhaps surprising shift, according to The Wall Street Journal: There is now a dearth of supply of convenient neighborhood shopping centers, and that is driving up the value of existing ones.Large investors like Blackstone have noticed and are now betting on the lowly strip mall. Blackstone spent $4 billion in November to acquire Retail Opportunity Investments, which owns about 90 shopping centers, most of them anchored by grocery stores.Blackstone President Jon Gray said at the time that he believes the extreme distress the commercial real estate market has faced in recent years is beginning to ease up. He now sees opportunity in the sector."If you were an investor in real estate after the financial crisis, you would have made a lot of money. And my guess is, if you're an investor today, the same thing will happen," he said at an event hosted by Goldman Sachs.Beyond just the value driven by scarcity, an uptick in in-person shopping also bodes well for the shopping center. Foot traffic to grocery stores was 12% higher in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the same time in 2019, before the pandemic, the Journal reported. And there are many small businesses that still attract IRL shoppers, like coffee shops and nail salons. Flexible work schedules are also allowing residents to take quick shopping trips nearby.James Corl, head of New York-based private real estate group Cohen & Steers, wrote in a September blog post that the investment market for open-air"Open-air shopping centers are the only major property type that is experiencing an acceleration in rental rate growth," Corl said in the blog post. "We believe that a durable acceleration in earnings growth combined with relatively high current yields will propel shopping center investment performance for some time, a reality that the market has yet to fully recognize."

  • Former Star Wars Star Jake Lloyd Talks Mental Health and Reconnecting With the Galaxy Far, Far Away
    gizmodo.com
Star Warsreturn to theaters in 1999 withPhantom Menaceintroduced audiences to Jake Lloyd, who played the young Anakin Skywalker. While Hayden Christensen would play the character in later appearnaces, Lloyd eventually faded from the public eye. That changed when last March, he and his mother Lisa revealed hed been in rehab for nearly a year after suffering a psychotic break and was diagoned with paranoid schizophrenia.Since then, Lloyd has accepted taking on continued treatment, and therapy, and my meds, he said in a recent interview with Clayton Sandell. Having recently completed his 18-month rehab stint, the actor said hes been able to recognize his schizophrenia diagnosis. For years, Lloyd had anosognosia, a neurological condition that made him unknowingly deny his symptoms. Hitting such a low point has allowed good things to happen, he continued, such as honestly taking part in treatment, my meds, and living with my diagnosis. Prior to last year, the general assumption was the harsh criticism Lloyd received after Phantomsrelease contributed to his breakdown, similar to how backlash against Jar Jar Binks back then nearly drove Ahmed Best to suicide. At the time, his mother refuted those claims, and revealed her sons paternal side had a history of schizophrenia. For her and the rest of his family, Lloyds improvement is a big relief. Hes getting so much better than he was, added Lisa Lloyd. Were all just thrilled that hes doing as well as he is, and that hes working really hard at it.Overall, Lloyd says hes feeling pretty good nowadays, and said he was greatly appreciative of the fan support hes received over the past year. Public appearances are currently off the table, but it sounds like he still holds affection forStar Wars: he told Sandell hes recently watchedAhsokaand put time intoStar Wars: The Old Republicand the originalForce Unleashed, and is looking to play the sequel. And while he hasnt watched any of the recent movies, he said hes holding out for May the Fourth with my mom. Sandells full story with Jake Lloyd can be read here. Want more io9 news?
