WWW.MACWORLD.COMApple vows to clarify AI summaries after spate of fake news alertsMacworldFollowing a litany of serious errors and numerous complaints, Apple has announced that it will make changes to the way its AI news summaries are presented to users. In December, the BBC complained when Apple Intelligence auto-summarized one of its articles as part of a notification and completely altered its meaning, falsely informing readers that the alleged killer Luigi Mangione had shot himself. The rest of the summary is accurate, but the first clause is wholly false.BBCBBC News is the most trusted news media in the world, a BBC spokesperson said at the time. It is essential to us that our audiences can trust any information or journalism published in our name and that includes notifications. But Apple seemingly did not respond to the complaint and more errors followed. In January the companys AI summarized a BBC article about the World Darts Championship to say that Luke Littler had won the competition, when it hadnt even started. (Funnily enough Littler did go on to become the youngest ever winner, but not until later.) It also incorrectly claimed Rafael Nadal had come out as gay when he had not, again presenting this information as if it came from the BBC.While the BBC appears to be the main sufferer of Apple Intelligences inaccuracies, a New York Times alert was reportedly twisted to suggest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested; he had not.Apple AI notification summaries continue to be so so so bad Ken Schwencke (@schwanksta.com) 2024-11-21T19:22:27.650ZApple has not apologised for the errors, nor has it even explicitly admitted that the AI got these things wrong. But the company has this week acknowledged that Apple Intelligences summaries can be improved, and promised that an imminent software update will do so.Apple Intelligence features are in beta and we are continuously making improvements with the help of user feedback, the company said. A software update in the coming weeks will further clarify when the text being displayed is summarization provided by Apple Intelligence. We encourage users to report a concern if they view an unexpected notification summary. At the moment, the notifications are presented as if they come directly from the news source. At the top they say BBC News (or NYTimes, or whatever), with the official app logo on the left; nowhere does it say that the text has been autogenerated by Apple Intelligence rather than being provided by the app. It would appear that Apple is promising only to label the text more informatively, rather than to make it more accurate although one would hope that work on the latter aspect is ongoing as a matter of routine. For more on this story, and the limitations of AI more generally, read the Macalopes latest column, Apple Intelligence didnt write this headline.0 Comments 0 Shares 17 Views

WWW.COMPUTERWORLD.COMGoogle faces new labor board complaint over contractor union bargainingThe US National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has filed a fresh complaint against Google, alleging that the company acts as the employer of certain contract workers and must negotiate with their union, Reuters reports. The Board has said Google is a joint employer for roughly 50 San Francisco-based content creators hired through IT contractor Accenture Flex. These workers, who joined the Alphabet Workers Union in 2023, should be considered under the tech giants purview, according to the agency, the report said.An administrative judge will now hear the complaint, with the decision subject to review by the NLRBs five-member panel. If the Board confirms Googles status as a joint employer for the Accenture Flex contractors, the tech giant would be compelled to engage in collective bargaining and could be held accountable for breaches of federal labor law.NLRB is also looking into a separate complaint from October, which accuses Google and Accenture Flex of altering working conditions without consulting the union first, according to the report. This follows the NLRBs January 2024 ruling requiring Google to negotiate with employees at YouTube Music an Alphabet subsidiary hired through a different staffing firm. Google has appealed the decision, and a US federal court is scheduled to review the case later this month.Google has faced growing labor challenges, marked by worker protests and layoffs. Last year, the company removed a $15-an-hour minimum wage for contractors and implemented changes aimed at sidestepping union negotiations.Implications for the industryGoogle has stated that it does not have sufficient control over contract workers to qualify as their joint employer, according to the report. The outcome of the case could set a precedent for how contract workers are treated across the tech industry, where companies frequently rely on third-party staffing firms.Companies may need to rethink their mix of employment types and how they engage contract and gig workers, said Sanchit Vir Gogia, chief analyst and CEO at Greyhound Research. In a worst-case scenario, this work could be moved to locations where such regulations dont exist. Alternatively, companies might face additional compliance requirements, costs, and audits if the NLRB wins against major corporations.Meanwhile, large corporations may need to adopt a more flexible stance on the issue, as the number of contract and gig workers is expected to grow, Gogia added.A decision against Google could also energize unionization efforts within the tech sector, offering a roadmap for organizing workers in an industry that has traditionally resisted union activity. The topic is also profoundly interlinked with the countrys political climate, Gogia said. If one were to consider the past stand that the Trump administration had on the subject, it is clear that the concept of joint employer may not see the light of day after all.0 Comments 0 Shares 18 Views

WWW.TECHNOLOGYREVIEW.COMThe Download: how AI is changing internet search, and the future of privacy in the USThis is todays edition ofThe Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of whats going on in the world of technology.AI means the end of internet search as weve known itWe all know what it means, colloquially, to google something. You pop a few words in a search box and in return get a list of blue links to the most relevant results. Fundamentally, its just fetching information thats already out there on the internet and showing it to you, in a structured way.But all that is up for grabs. We are at a new inflection point. The biggest change to the way search engines deliver information to us since the 1990s is happening right now. No more keyword searching. Instead, you can ask questions in natural language. And instead of links, youll increasingly be met with answers written by generative AI and based on live information from across the internet, delivered the same way.Not everyone is excited for the change. Publishers are completely freaked out. And people are also worried about what these new LLM-powered results will mean for our fundamental shared reality. In the weeks leading up to the popular podcasters revelation, the drug had already become a flashpoint in the covid culture wars. But Ivermectin isnt some new or experimental drug: in addition to its use as an anti-parasite treatment for livestock, its commonly employed in humans to treat a form of rosacea, among other things. APPLEINSIDER.COMValerion VisionMaster Pro 2 projector review: Beautiful hardware, amazing image qualityThe Valerion VisionMaster Pro 2 offers cinematic-level picture quality in a consumer-friendly and incredibly well-engineered package.Valerion VisionMaster Pro 2Anyone wanting to put together a home cinema has to consider whether they want a projector or a large television. Most go for the latter, since a projector has inherent issues associated with home use.For a start, you're not going to necessarily get the same level of picture quality that you get at a movie theater with a home projector. Part of it is light management in the environment, but nearly all of it is shelling out for a good-enough projector in the first place. ARCHITIZER.COMJapan-Eaves Design: 9 Projects That Reinvent the Gassh-zukuri AestheticArchitizer's 13th A+Awards features a suite of sustainability-focused categories recognizing designers that are building a greener industry and a better future. Start your entry to receive global recognition for your work! The word minka refers to vernacular houses commonly found in rural Japan. Though the term historically referred to the homes of farmers, artisans and merchants (non-samurai castes), in the 21st century, it can be used to describe any residence built in one of a number of orthodox styles. The Edo period, 1603 to 1868, introduced several designs to this glossary of farmhouse types, including gassh-zukuri. An everyday sight in regions such as Gifu prefecture, central Japan, these buildings are not dissimilar to those found in Alpine Europe. Typified by steep extended roofs conceived to look like two hands in prayer, authentic construction involves no nails or screws, with individual elements instead slotting into place. There are several reasons for the approach. Many corners of Japan are known for heavy snowfall in winter and precipitation throughout the year, including powerful typhoons. The elongated gable design does its best to push rain and snow off and away from the building, and these sides are often positioned in such as way as to act as a windbreaker. The blueprint also means conditions inside the structure are more consistent and self-regulating, reducing the need to rely on heating or cooling to moderate temperatures, exposing inhabitants, furniture, furnishing and fittings to less direct sunlight, extending the time between repairs, refurbishments and replacements.More than anything, though, gassh-zukuri is not confined to the past. Today, orthodontic offices, suburban restaurants, private residences and remote working retreats look to this aesthetic for practicality and beauty, the striking impact yet ability to complement heritage and remote locations. Here are 9 contemporary Japanese designs defined by their extended eaves which prove our point.KomonokaenBy Tatsuya Kawamoto + Associates, JapanPopular Choice Winner, Retail, 12th Annual A+AwardsFlorist, plant shop, cafe. More than just a retail complex in a touristic area, Komonokaen responds to the clients desire to create a new landmark space for the locality with a timber roof that juts out beyond the walls. Covered in 20,000 pieces of stone sourced from nearby, the use of local artisan labour, materials and design accentuates the strong regional identity that plays a big part in driving visitor numbers.Hara HouseBy EA Research and Design Office / Takeru Shoji, Nagaoka, Japan Modern minimalism revitalizes the traditional rural community through a hang-out for friends, family and the residents of an old countryside estate. Boasting covered porch for chitchatting with passing neighbors, and a number of open spaces born to host, its a pro-active, sociable response to the decline and isolation places like this outlying settlement near Nagaoka, where Hara House is located, are experiencing gassh-zukuri in the age of urbanization.House for MarebitoBy VUILD, Toyama, Japan Another project inspired by rural population loss, and then the Covid-19 triggered rush for remote working from remote locations, House for Marebito updates the gassh-zukuri principle to raise a bridge between traditional home and temporary accommodation, with each address crowdfunded and shared between investors.Futtsu Weekend HouseBy Atelier MEME, Chiba, Japan Earlier iterations focused on winding walls and expansive openings; however, soon this approach was seen as a fixation on boundaries. Since the aim was to develop new relationships with the buildings surroundings, a dynamic roof divided into four sections, each lengthened towards the ground became a jumping-off point. Generous spaces are formed beneath the extended eaves.Ushimaru RestaurantBy Axel Vansteenkiste Architecture, Matsuomachi Kigatana, Sammu, Japan Axel Vansteenkiste says the design for Ushimaru Restaurant is European-style. The Ghent, Belgium trained architect clearly has plenty of Flemish overhangs to call on for inspiration, although here things are more in keeping with traditional local designs. That 45-degree pitched roof is a bold feature, which beautifully encloses the new interior lounge area with striking overall effect.Toyohashi Orthodontic OfficeBy TSC Architects, Aichi, Japan The Toyohashi Orthodontic Office is about using gassh-zukuri to break with tradition, rather than celebrate it. In Aichi, typical buildings have become standardized, so here the emphasis is on disrupting uniformity through a series of triangular roof sections extending beyond the structure and transparent lower facade. The result is a series of differently-angled viewpoints of the surrounding city.Sayama Forest ChapelBy Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP, Tokorozawa, JapanA space for reflection at the Sayama Lakeside Cemetery, Sayama Forest Chapel is protected from the threat of heavy downpours, but it also looks to safeguard the environment with those inward sloping walls chosen in a bid to avoid uprooting existing trees. Externally, the ground-to-vanishing point roofs performs another role, too, pulling eyes high into the forest canopy and out towards the departed, focusing minds on those we want to remember within this stunning settingSANU 2nd HOMEBy ADX inc., JapanLive within nature is the tagline of SANU 2nd Home, a Japanese remote working property firm that offers professionals the opportunity to escape into the woods for a quietly motivating change of pace. The gassh-zukuri-style roof forms part of a wider building system mimicking a beehive, too, its honeycomb nature adding strength and stability to a relatively basic cabin structure.Self-built Shinto Shrine in a Depopulated Village in JapanBy D Environmental Design System Laboratory, Tosayamadacho Nakagonyu, Kami, Japan Tosayamadacho Nakagonyu has been home to a kanamine shinto community for more than 200 years. Like so many hamlets across the globe, the number of residents has been in decline for years, and in 2015 the one remaining house and nearby shrine suffered typhoon damage. Ten students from nearby Kochi University of Technology and the villagers rebuilt the sacred site using gassh-zukuri principles.Air House By IFOO, Kagoshima, JapanTaking open plan to another level, the Air House celebrates transparency in the literal sense. Huge spaces are dedicated to the non-living areas, while tiny home principles are introduced to bring living quarters into cozier proximity, with floor-to-extended roof glass wall providing a transition into the neighbouring field, creating the kind of high-impact view residential architects would be hard pushed to better.Architizer's 13th A+Awards features a suite of sustainability-focused categories recognizing designers that are building a greener industry and a better future.
