Lenovo unveils the Legion Go S, a new handheld PC running on SteamOS
Valves Steam Deck is a dominating force in the handheld gaming PC market, due in part to the user-friendly SteamOS. Now others want in and Valve seems happy to help.At CES 2025, Lenovo announced a brand new handheld PC, the Legion Go S, and it runs Valves premiere operating system. The Go S has SteamOS pre-installed, and features an 8-inch screen with variable refresh rate (VRR), Hall effect joysticks, adjustable trigger switches, and other alluring traits not found in any model of the Steam Deck. The Legion Go S with SteamOS will launch in May for $499.99, bringing hardware specs that put it on par and, in some cases, well above the Asus ROG Ally and other powerful handhelds. At its base price, youll get the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme CPU, and a 1,920 x 1,200 LCD display that can go up to a 120 Hz refresh rate with VRR support, meaning the screens refresh rate will sync with the frame rate, so it wont exhibit screen tearing. Itll come with a microSD card slot, two USB4 Type-C ports (up to 65 W charging speed), and a headphone jack, and in terms of additional storage, it supports either M.2 PCIe 2242 or 2280-size SSDs.There will be a $599.99 version of the Legion Go S (also running SteamOS) thatll contain the new AMD Ryzen Z2 Go processor (a new CPU thats exclusive to Lenovo, according to a press release), 16 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB SSD.Instead of trying to build something wildly different than the Steam Deck, Lenovo clearly borrowed a couple of ideas from Valve for Legion Go S, then iterated with hardware features many players will adore. For instance, theres only one set of programmable back paddles around the grips, but you can adjust the throw of the triggers to travel their full distance, or to be shorter, like a mouse click. There are no touchpads, as Lenovo opted for the Xbox-style arrangement of sticks, D-pad, and face buttons. Nothing wrong with that; its got a fingerprint sensor just below the right analog stick, in case you want to lock your system down. For those whod rather have Windows 11, Lenovos got you covered with a version of the Legion Go S thats coming out this month. The $729.99 version featuring the faster AMD Ryzen Z2 Go, 32 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB SSD will ship first, followed by a $599.99 configuration in May that has the Z2 Go, 16 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of storage.

The Last of Us season 2 will debut in April, bringing Joel and Ellies journey to a crossroads
Fans of The Last of Us have been waiting with bated breath for any news regarding the upcoming second season of the hit post-apocalyptic HBO series starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. Well, the long wait is over, as Sony unveiled a new trailer for the show at its CES 2025 press conference on Monday, revealing that the highly anticipated second season is set to return this April. The short trailer offers a blink-and-youll-miss-it glimpse of what audiences can expect from Joel and Ellies next adventure. Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart) appears as Abby, a member of the Fireflies faction whose story, as those who have played 2020s The Last of Us Part II already know, will be pivotal in the forthcoming season. Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) makes an appearance, reprising his role as the Washington Liberation Front Leader Isaac Dixon from The Last of Us Part II, as well as Isabela Merced (Alien: Romulus), who plays Dina, Ellies friend and love interest. And of course, theres Joel; shedding a tear in one shot and furiously slamming a door in another. Good to see ya, buddy! In March 2023, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann confirmed in an interview with GQ U.K. that the series would adapt The Last of Us Part II across multiple seasons, with the second season of The Last of Us covering the first part of the games story. You have noted correctly that we will not say how many, Mazin said when asked how many seasons the events of The Last of Us Part II would cover. But more than one is factually accurate. As with the first season, the second season of The Last of Us will also feature notable changes from its source material. Some of the stuff Im most excited for [in Part 2] are the changes weve discussed and seeing the story come to life again in this other version, Druckmann told GQ U.K. And I think its exciting because it leans into those feelings you had from the game, really heavily, in a new way.

Stimulation Clicker is pure internet hell mode
Few games have accurately captured the experience of online brain overload like Stimulation Clicker, a new free browser game by Neal Agarwal (creator of Infinite Craft, The Password Game, and more). This is a clicker game in the style of Banana or Universal Paperclips, but its also a parody of clicker games and the whole concept of clicking as a dopamine release.Stimulation Clicker starts off simply enough, with just a tantalizing button in the middle of your browser screen that says Click Me. Clicking on it earns you one Stimulation point; clicking it a second time earns you another Stimulation point. Once youve got 3 Stimulation points, you can unlock a DVD logo that will bounce around your browser screen. You may remember watching this screen as a mindless way to pass the time as a bored teenager. This is like that. But its also so much more.Soon, Stimulation Clicker transports the player beyond the bored pastimes of 90s kids and into the mindless loop of a present-day internet scroll feed. The more Stimulation points you earn, the more you can fill your screen with bullshit. This includes (but is not limited to): lofi beats to relax/study to. Slime videos. ASMR. An audio feed of a true crime podcast about a dead woman who worked as a mermaid in one of those resorts where women wear mermaid tails (except she also maybe had actual gills? Im not sure, because I couldnt hear the rest of the podcast over the other videos that I began to unlock).Stimulation Clicker gets shockingly difficult after a while due to how overstimulating it becomes. The more extras you unlock, the harder it is to deal with having the app open at all. Not so much a game, in the end, as a terrifying art project. Congratulations to Agarwal on thoroughly rattling my brain and possibly using up all the dopamine I had reserved for my workday.

The Pop Lamp From Mud Australia Is Tiny but Mighty
Beauty and simplicity frequently go hand in hand, inspiring us to see more in less. The LED Pop Lamp from Mud Australia does just that, offering a rechargeable task light just as sweet as it is small. Cordless and endlessly portable, the body of the lamp is crafted from a singular piece of porcelain, expertly hiding interior dimming switches and retaining a beautiful, hand wrought finish. The Pop Lamp comes in 6 modern colors Blossom, Duck Egg, Dust, Orange, Red, and Slate each imbuing the lamp with a different feeling depending on where it happens to be placed. Shelley Simpson, founder of Mud Australia, had been thinking about a porcelain lighting line for a while, then met designer Zachary Hanna at an event in 2018. Unable to shake the idea, she reached out in 2021 to see how they could collaborate on a line for Mud. Both share a deep respect for each others respective crafts, yet are also committed to pushing the boundaries of whats possible. The resulting collection couldnt have come together better, and its an exciting point in Muds development to be able to move into a whole new design category. Zacs design empathy for porcelain production, and his fresh perspective, has enabled us to achieve a seamless embodiment of Muds design aesthetic and contemporary lighting, says Simpson. This collection is so very much about collaboration between Hanna and Simpson, a quality integral to the design process at Mud. The integration of lighting within a porcelain vessel presents unique design challenges that must be intimately understood to provide a beautiful and functional product. For Hanna, it was meticulously researching Muds design language, then taking these forms into CAD to refine and edit ideas. For Simpson, her extensive expertise in porcelain production and sense of structure minimized pain points within the design process, adding context within material science. After much trial and error, they arrived at the finished prototype. It was a moment of realization, Simpson recalls. Zacs vision had not only captured Muds aesthetic in lighting, but it had created something truly special. It wasnt just a lamp; it embodied everything we had hoped to achieve. It was incredibly rewarding to see it take shape. The Pop Lamp and the Flared Table Lamp are set to receive a fresh set of new colorways in 2025. This, as well as an exciting third product launch, the Flared Standing Lamp, is yet another reason to keep an eye on Mud Australia in the next coming years.RedSlateOrangeDustDuck EggBlossomShelley Simpson and Zachary HannaTo learn more about the Pop Lamp from Mud Australia, visit mudaustralia.com.

The Salto Collection by Mas Design Shows, and Tells as Well
The best designs are usually subversive in a simple manner, utilizing different materials or processes in novel ways that spark and delight the imagination. The Salto Collection by Maria Adele Savioli of MAS Design hides the structure of the piece just enough to obscure its bones. Yet once you get closer, further inspection will reveal a glint of metal peeking out underneath what looks to be a measured, albeit heavy terrazzo. A brushed aluminum frame keeps this solid shape light, and upends our notion of the possible weight of the piece. Available in multiple colors, the materiality used here speaks to the sustainability and versatility that is shown strongly throughout the table collection.Terrazzo is a beautiful, ancient material, stemming from one of our earliest forms of expression: pottery. An elegant way to recycle damaged clay goods, quartz chips, or various other minerals, terrazzo has a one pot approach that builders and makers have been using for centuries. This composite structure makes it incredibly strong, held together with a cement or other binder for a hardy material, meant to stand the test of time. It does take on the qualities of stone, making it quite heavy, and perfect for flooring or countertops. The Salto Collection looks at this differently, with a terrazzo layer, almost a second skin, applied to the aluminum frame. Aluminum is incredibly light, and can be endlessly recycled into new creations. The careful ingenuity in how the side pieces reflect the way terrazzo would be cut for an authentic feel, and the precision in which the aluminum is allowed to sneak through is exquisite. These details take the Salto Collection to the next level, offering a level of wit. The distinctive texture of the tabletop, uninhibited by the visual busyness of the substrate inside, is reflective more of the binding material, and is much more texturally smooth. What is structure becomes finish or a detail of style becomes a supporting element, it depends on the point of view. Everything is fluid, like the nodes that connect the planes to the legs. But everything is rigid, explains the designer. The form contradicts the substance in these trampolines that are not elastic.Maria Adele Savioli started her studio, MAS Design, in 2012 after gaining experience within the industry. Upending our traditional notions of common and rare materials, she twists the meaning of what we might find a naturally heavy, dark, or ancient substance into a lighter, contemporary work. Light is integral to her work, the effects of translucency adding depth, and almost a feeling of being underwater. For more on the Salto Collection, visit mas-design-it.Photography by Eller Studio.

CES 2025: This Adorable Mini-Robot Will Cool Down Your Hot Drinks
I've seen plenty of weird and wonderful devices at the annual CES expo, alongside more serious and heavyweight hardware launches, but the Nkojita FuFu might be my favorite quirky gadget of the 2025 show yet: The tiny cat-like robot sits on the side of your mugs and blows on your drinks and food to cool them down. It's functional, and also rather adorable.According to Yukai Engineering, the Japanese manufacturer behind the robot, it's "designed to recreate the joy of encountering and interacting with a human baby"presumably because it's small and playful, not because it blows on your beverages. You can put it on the side of any drink or dish of food with a raised edge that's thin enough for the little bot to perch on top of. Credit: Jake Peterson In Japanese, "neko-jita" means "cat tongue," a description used for an intolerance of hot food and drink (a 2018 poll quoted by Yukai Engineering suggests it's something that bothers nearly half the population in Japan). The "fufu" part of the name is intended as an onomatopoeic expression imitating steady breathing. There are actually more smarts here than you might think, in addition to the stylish and cutesy design. The internal fan inside the Nkojita FuFu robot uses a special algorithm that will support up to eight different blowing modes, each with their own custom name: From a gradual ramping up in strength ("Look at That!") to a long, non-stop blow ("'Til You Drop").Apparently not all of these modes are guaranteed to make it to the final product, and it seems the bot will switch between them at randomthe idea being that the cooling gadget will then feel a little less robotic or like a standard fan. It works via an internal battery, which you can recharge via a USB-C port. The development team says their creation will cool hot water down from 190F (88C) to 160F (71C) in three minutes and 151F (66C) in five minutes. Without any additional cooling, the comparison temperatures are 176F (80C) after three minutes and 171F (77C) after five minutes, so you can see how much it speeds up the process. The bot can just sit to the side of a dish. Credit: Yukai Engineering "We created Nkojita FuFu as a little personal meal partner, so you can solve your nko-jita problem anywhere, anytime," says Tsubasa Tominaga, the chief marketing officer at Yukai Engineering. "The robot doesnt just help you enjoy hot coffee. It can make it easier for seniors to down hot soup and reduce parents chores by helping kids eat with less help."The bad news is, the "mascot robot" is unlikely to be available outside of Japan, so if you live anywhere else you might have to get creative when it comes to ordering one. A crowdfunding campaign is scheduled for the middle of 2025, and the final retail price is expected to be 3,800 Japanese yen (roughly $25).

CES 2025: Do You Really Need a New HDMI 2.2 Cable?
The HDMI Forum is at it again. At CES 2025, the organization announced a brand new HDMI standard: HDMI 2.2. This new specification is a huge leap from HDMI 2.1, with some impressive on-paper specs. But do you really need to plan on upgrading your HDMI setup? Spoiler: definitely not. What's new with HDMI 2.2HDMI 2.1, which the HDMI Forum released seven years ago, has a bandwidth of 48Gbps, and supports outputs of 4K at 120Hz and 10K at 60Hz. This latest HDMI standard doubles that bandwidth to 96Gbps, and supports 4K at 480Hz, 8K at 240Hz, and 10K at 120Hz (as seen in an official photo below). Those higher resolutions and refresh rates are especially useful for cutting-edge augmented reality, mixed reality, spatial reality, and light field displays, but probably won't be necesarry on most consumer products as of yet. HDMI 2.2 also supports Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), which can help improve audio and video synchronization with setups that involve a multitude of connected devices. Credit: HDMI Forum The new HDMI 2.2 cables will come with Ultra96 badging (because HDMI cables weren't confusing enough yet). With this update, the physical connector still stays the same shape and size: users will be able to confirm that they are indeed using the high throughput cable using a QR code on the Ultra96 branded cables.Do you need HDMI 2.2?All this considered, there is really no need for you to rush to get an HDMI 2.2 cable. The spec won't be available to manufacturers until mid-2025, and even then, we might not see devices that support HDMI 2.2 connections until next year. Sure, HDMI 2.2 is backwards compatible with HDMI 2.1, so you can use these cables with your existing devices, but unless you have a 10K TV (you probably don't), you might as well stick to the cables you already use.So no, you don't need to rush out to buy an HDMI 2.2 cable when they start shipping later this year. Knowing how these things go, we are looking at a couple of years of waiting before all that extra bandwidth turns into something useful.
