A Hardwood Floor Where You Can Actually Remove One Piece at a Time
Standard hardwood flooring features a tongue-and-groove arrangement to lock each piece into place. However, the interlocking set-up means that should you need to remove a damaged piece, or access the subfloor for some maintenance reason, you must take up the entire floor until you reach the relevant piece.A Pennsylvania-based company called Steller Floors has developed an alternative to the tongue and groove. At first blush, the company's logo seems a strange one for a flooring companyuntil you realize it represents their innovation: An extruded plastic spline. By 3D-printing a plank that would snap neatly into the spline, the company worked out the right profile they'd use to cut into hardwood. Their resultant flooring product can easily be laid by a DIY'er. To firm each piece up, you simply step on it with your foot. And should you ever need to remove a piece, you can pull up just that piece, using a suction cup. You can also install these herringbone-style.And now for the sticker shock: Their least-expensive option is a 5/8" thick Oak at $10/foot. (I assume that the cost of the splines is in there.) If you want to step up to 3/4" Oak, it's $11/foot. More exotic species (Walnut, Hickory, etc.) are $20/foot. Innovation doesn't come cheap.

Forever Object: Studio Neat's Minimalist Mark Two Pen
Sketchers and writers, look around your desk: Could you never buy another pen? If your cup is filled with G2 rollerballs or disposable ballpoints, the answer is no. But some of us have "forever" pens where all we need to buy are the refills, and there's something satisfying about that.If you're in the market for a forever pen, give Studio Neat's Mark Two a look. Machined out of stainless steel and sleeved in Cerakote, it's a handsome piece of industrial design that's meant to last forever. "Nothing extraneous. Mark Two was designed to be minimal and beautiful. There are no logos or excess ornamentation, and the seam on the body (to unscrew and replace the refill) is nearly completely hidden by a post-polishing process. The cerakote sleeve has a slightly textured, matte finish, and the body is polished and smooth." Capped, it's just 88mm (3.5") in length; posted, it becomes 130mm (5.1") long. You can order it with or without a clip. I'd want it with the clip, to prevent it from rolling off of a desk, but the smooth variant might be better for those who pants-pocket it. For ink, the Mark Two ships with a Schmidt P8126 Mini refill, which features a 0.6mm tip. If you're not a fan of Schmidt (and I'm not, see below), Studio Neat also offers a D1 Refill Adaptor that fits within the pen and will take any D1-style refill. A nice tactile detail: When you cap it, "the body slides into the sleeve with a satisfying magnetic closure." The Mark Two comes in multiple colors. Lastly, the pen comes with the Studio Neat Lifetime Guarantee: "A no asterisks, no strings attached approach to standing behind our products," the firm writes. "Should anything need fixing in your Studio Neat product, we will repair or replace it, no questions asked. We are in it for the long haul, and are glad to have you along for the ride."The Mark Two runs $125 with the clip, $110 without.---My gripe with Schmidt, for refill nerds:My forever pen is a brass model designed by Karl Zahn and produced by Acme Studio. It takes a Schmidt 888-F (0.6mm tip) refill, and I'm surprised by how terrible they are: They start out blotchy, then gradually recede into an unpleasantly scratchy ink delivery that runs out quickly.I write in a college-lined notebook daily, and on average found I was getting just 19 pages out of each Schmidt, with the last five or so pages delivered scratchily.I subsequently switched to Pilot G2 refills. They deliver ink smoothly and consistently from start to finish, and on average I get 43 pages out of them. As a bonus the cartridges are transparent (the Schmidts are opaque) so there's no guessing as to whether you're empty or just jammed. Lastly, the G2 refills cost less than the Schmidts (about $1 vs. $1.40.)

Combining analog and mechanical strikes a cord
The Core77 Design Awards Toys & Play category features consumer products designed for children or adults for the purpose of activating play and creative exploration. Examples include children's toys, board games, art supplies, DIY kits, educational toys, electronic toys, musical instruments.Rafael Atijas wants Core77 Design Awards entrants to "make it interesting" by presenting ideas that do more than just solve problems or address a function. His specific request: "Add your voice and personality and make sure you are bringing something new to the table."The Loog piano created by the Loog team led by Rafael Atijas. That's advice Rafael has taken to heart in his own career. As the founder and CEO of Loog, a line of instruments designed to help children play and fall in love with music, the Uruguay native has not only added his voice to the world of toys and play but helped children find theirs. The company's business plan was actually Rafael's master's thesis at NYU (he graduated with honors). Since then, he has gone on to win design and innovation awards and has been selected as an Endeavor entrepreneur.Though his CEO role has him wearing many hats (or playing many instruments), from strategy to finance, Rafael remains most energized by working alongside his design team on products. Given that his biggest concern is "the decline of mechanical and analog products that ignite curiosity around how things work," it seems natural that a pursuit like Loog instruments would strike a chord with Rafael and the new generation of music makers around the globe who share that curiosity.Toyish Labs winning entry for 2024 in the Toys & Play Category: Clixo Mars Rovers Pack. The 2024 winner in the Core77 Design Awards Toys & Play category was Toyish Labs for its Clixo Mars Rovers Pack. This offering, part of the Clixo Expedition Series, takes the magnetic flexible building toy into a new universe of discovery, helping children explore Martian landscapes with glow-in-the-dark rovers, motorcycles, space drones, and more.If you have an interesting toy or play design that could be music to our ears (and eyes and minds), share it with us through the 2025 Core77 Design Awards. Enter your work in the Core77 Design Awards today.

Nvidia just unveiled a $3,000 Mac mini clone for AI computing
MacworldJust hours after Dell decided all on its own to rename its laptop line with Pro and Pro Max monikers, Nvidia also took a page from Apples playbook with its new personal AI supercomputer. No, its not called the Nvidia mini, but it does have a certain simpatico with the Mac mini.Nvidia didnt share the exact specs for what its calling Project Digits, but the device fit neatly in CEO Jensen Huangs palm during its unveiling. Next to a monitor and keyboard (above), it appears to be slightly bigger than the Mac mini with a boxier and more industrial design.Nvidia didnt provide benchmarks for the GB10 chip, but did say its capable of a petaflop of FP4 floating point performance and able to run up to 200-billion-parameter large language models, likely beyond the capabilities of the $599 Mac mini. However, Nvidia isnt selling it to just anyone. The goal of Project Digits, Huang said, is to put an AI supercomputer on the desks of every data scientist, AI researcher and student.NvidiaTo that end, the computer starts at $3,000 and comes with a 20-core GB10 Grace Blackwell Superchip and 128GB of unified memory. Configuring a Mac mini with the M4 Pro chip, which has a 14-core CPU, and 64GB of RAM, costs $2,499 with 1TB of storage. A 1TB Mac Studio fitted with a 24-core M2 Ultra and 128GB of RAM brings the price to $4,799.While it takes several M4 Mac minis to even reach a teraflop of performance, the M2 Ultra in the Mac Studio already tops 20 teraflops. And Apple is expected to upgrade that machine to the M4 family of processors sometime this year, which will obviously bring a major performance boost. And we assume the power draw will be many times that of the Mac mini or Mac Studio (or Mac Pro for that matter).NvidiaOf course, were comparing Apples to oranges here. Nvidias Mac mini clone isnt meant for everyday work. Digits is kitted out with Nvidias full AI software enterprise platform, including an extensive library of Nvidia AI software for experimentation and prototyping, including software development kits, orchestration tools, frameworks and models.
