    Brattle-Thurston House // c.1749
This early Colonial house with unique, rusticated wood coursing carved, treated, and painted to resemble ashlar stone, can be found on Prospect Hill Street in Newport, Rhode Island. This is the Brattle-Thurston House, a circa 1749 Georgian residence of an appropriate gray color, yet when I stopped by in early 2024, had peeling paint. The house was originally part of the Latham Thurston estate, and was later rented or purchased by Robert Brattle (Brattell), who lived here with his wife, children, and an enslaved person according to the 1790 census. The home would later be owned by William Thurston, a hatter and dyer, who likely inherited the residence from his ancestor. Beyond the unique rusticated wood siding, the design features splayed lintels, the main entrance on the side elevation and a later entrance facing the street with segmental pediment above.

Why CISOs should build stronger bonds with the legal function in 2025
For chief information security officers (CISOs) still looking to set some professional goals for the New Year, or to expand on a list theyve already compiled, consider strengthening the relationship with your organisations legal function. You may well have already spent a great deal of time building bridges with company lawyers. After all, its now a significant aspect of the modern CISO role, according to the 2024 Global CISO Organisation and Compensation Surveyfrom executive recruitment firm Heidrick & Struggles, a poll of over 400 CISOs worldwide. When asked which functions they spend most time working and consulting with, the top two responses offered by respondents involved other IT professionals, with network, cloud and engineering groups in first place, and software development and product development/engineering in second place. In third place was legal, compliance and risk way ahead of finance, HR or the board of directors. In 2025, the links between cyber security and legal teams need to be closer than ever, because around the world, the IT security function and the people who lead it are increasingly the target of new regulations and sharp government scrutiny.Regulatory changes and uncertainty place huge stress on cyber professionals. Even where rules are clear, the volume is increasing and the burden of compliance growing heavier. Any company operating on an international basis faces a wide range of country-specific regulations that may well contradict each other, or at least include requirements that dont clearly align. In the EU, companies face theEU AI Act,NIS2and theDigital Operational Resilience Act (DORA). The incoming administration in the United States could propose significant changes to current regulations, too. And every organisation already faces strict PII mandates when it comes to how the personal information of customers, suppliers and partners is stored and managed. All this makes it a real struggle for IT security teams to figure out how to best implement regulations in their organisation. Their colleagues in the legal department will be their best allies in helping them to navigate this minefield.Lawyers can help a CISO and their team to develop a stronger and deeper understanding of how and where rules apply to their specific organisation and where they do not, for example. The scope of coverage of a regulation can be a pretty subtle matter and legal expertise is often needed to analyse it effectively and accurately.Another significant task and another area of potential conflict between different regulations is identifying communication and reporting requirements, and figuring out the different schedules and types of information that need reporting. Here, the IT security and legal functions need to work on effective procedures and ensure they are communicated clearly to the appropriate personnel. But this is not a one-way street. The legal function may have an important role to play as an advisor to cyber security, but the CISO isnt just a passive consumer of the information offered. While regulations typically have good intent, sometimes wording or proposed implementation is not as effective as it should be. The CISO must be able to spot the gaps and contradictions and consult with legal teams on how best to tackle them.Working together, cyber security and legal teams can also define and implement best practices; for example, they might adopt the three lines of defence model, most commonly seen in the financial services sector. In this model, Level One defence is provided by the frontline employees performing the day-to-day work. Level Two is provided by managers responsible for those teams, monitoring their work to ensure it meets predefined standards. Finally, Level Three defence is provided by internal and external auditors those responsible for watching the watchers. By marshalling resources into these three lines of defence, organisations from any industry sector can achieve new levels of visibility and accountability.Another area in which the CISO can be a big help to their legal counterpart is in technological understanding. Its no secret that technology evolves much faster than the time it takes to write regulations and get them agreed and implemented. As a result, its not uncommon to see regulations put in place that simply dont know how to deal with new technologies. That was certainly true with cloud technology, and its increasingly the case with artificial intelligence (AI) approaches. There is much here that a CISO can offer in terms of advice to their organisations chief legal counsel. This can be an enormously valuable relationship. The CISO and the chief legal counsel, after all, have much in common. Both perform a crucial and complex function, the goal of which is to protect their organisations from threats. Both are deeply concerned with building resilience through policies, procedures and employee education. And both need to plan ahead when it comes to mitigating new risks to their organisation. Above all, both are crucial to good corporate governance and smooth-running operations. In 2025, my advice to CISOs is to continue building on these firm foundations.Read more from the Computer Weekly Security Think TankMike Gillespie and Ellie Hurst, Advent IM:CISOs will face growing challenges in 2025 and beyond.Elliot Rose, PA Consulting:The most pressing challenges for CISOs and cyber security teams.Pierre-Martin Tardif, ISACA:Six trends that will define cyber through to 2030.Stephen McDermid, Okta:In 2025: Identities conquer, and hopefully unite.Deepti Gopal, Gartner:CISOs:Don't rely solely on technical defences in 2025.Paul Lewis, Nominet:Decoding the end of the decade: What CISOs should watch out for.Rob Dartnall, SecAlliance:2025-30: Geopolitical influence on cyber and the convergence of threat.Elliott Wilkes, ACDS:Look to the future: How the threat landscape may evolve next.

This Incredible AI Learning Tool Prepares Students For The Future
By Alexa MacDonald, SAP NewsIn an era where artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly displacing and disrupting employee skill sets, its imperative to help current and future employees bridge the gap between the skills that AI demands and the skills they currently have. While corporations focus on reskilling their current workforces, educators around the world are hard at work developing and delivering courses to equip todays students with the skills required to thrive in a world increasingly defined and driven by AI.A recent World Economic ForumBusiness Builders is a gamified learning tool that can develop STEM skills and helps students sharpen their analytical, critical, and creative thinking skills using the SAP Analytics Cloud solution.gettyCollaboration between academia and industry is essential to deliver these skills at speed to students. Thats why the SAP University Alliances program has been forging partnerships with educational institutions for 25 years, with more than 2,800 institutions currently working with SAP to educate tomorrows talent with SAP skills. One of these partners is HEC Montral, a prestigious, internationally recognized business school with a long history of creating innovative learning approaches to equip students with SAP skills. Two decades ago, HEC Montral pioneered ERPsim, a revolutionary and hugely successful educational tool immersing students in a real-life business scenario within SAP. Today, an estimated 30,000 students a year learn with ERPsim. In an interview, Professor Pierre-Majorique Lger of HEC Montral talked about the latest collaboration between HEC Montral and SAP: Business Builders, the next generation of SAP gamified learning.Game On In The CloudBusiness Builders is a gamified learning tool that can develop STEM skills and helps students sharpen their analytical, critical, and creative thinking skills using the SAP Analytics Cloud solution.SAP is enabling the next generation to learn, research, and innovate with business applicationsProfessor Lger says educators are caught up in the generative AI tsunami and need to rethink a new pedagogical approach for students to develop data analytics and data literacy skills while at the same time recognizing that ChatGPT, for example, makes it super easy for students to circumvent doing the tasks themselves.Business Builders is one solution to that problem. The game can be played either face-to-face or in virtual teaching sessions, either synchronously in a single session or over several sessions.Students find themselves in one of three scenarios in a fast-paced, competitive game with interactive, realistic learning scenarios. There is no chance of resorting to ChatGPT or a similar AI tool to win. Instead, students must demonstrate data-driven decision-making skills and apply visualization techniques to make informed decisions. In each game, students take on roles such as marketing or product researcher, financial analyst, or supply chain analyst. Each game has multiple stages, with subsequent stages demanding greater skills and knowledge. The stages comprise 10 business questions targeting different levels of skills and knowledge. The business questions are designed for students with little or no data analytics skills as well as those with more advanced data visualization and manipulation skills. As part of the game, students use SAP Analytics Cloud to visually analyze the data and identify the best graphical representations to answer the questions.Real-Life Problems with Realistic DataThe game uses vast synthetic data sets to make the business decision-making process as authentic as possible. The notion of synthetic data is important, Professor Lger explains, because sometimes reality is too complex to bring into the classroom and does not serve the pedagogical process. Based on experience with ERPsim, creating a realistic synthetic data set that is as close as possible to reality is the best way to go.Business Builders currently offers three game scenarios offering a diverse range of real-life problems that students can solve using SAP Analytics Cloud: environmental, social, and governance; supply chain resilience; and international expansion.According to HEC Montral, the most-played scenario to date is supply chain resilience. This scenario involves a real-life problem where the Panama Canal gets shut down due to climate change, affecting the shipment of holiday gifts from Southeast Asia to the United States. Students are tasked with deciding how to reroute the containers and prioritize products to minimize the impact of this event.A Win-Win for Students, Educators, and EmployersIt is the challenge of our generation of professors faced with generative AI to come up with a novel way to teach students about data analytics, Professor Lger says. We have found a way of using gamification to engage students in leveraging what they know about analytics and mathematics to become business builders. Using data to get insights and solving problems on the best technology that exists SAP Analytics Cloud. And the best thing of all, its free for lecturers and their students around the world. To guide students through the game scenario questions and help optimize the learning experience, educators have access to tailor-made training materials. Instead of taking a hit-and-miss approach with the data and platform features, these tailor-made training materials help lecturers deepen the learning experience. Students can understand how insights are uncovered and how to make informed business decisions based on analysis of data sets and data visualizations.Since its launch in July 2024, more than 300 educational institutions have registered for access to the Business Builders game and an anticipated 2,500 students will use SAP Analytics Cloud to compete with their peers in the game by the end 2024.With technology accelerating at an ever-increasing speed, educators can register and get up and running with Business Builders free of charge in a just matter of days. Find out how on the Business Builders website. This story also appears on the SAP News Center.

In the 1930s, which country built an analog computer that ran on water?
Choose your answer and the correct choice will be revealed. Correct Answer:Soviet UnionA brief explanation whyWhile the first computers were mechanical and famously ran on vacuum tubes, there were other schools of thought that introduced a different kind of computer one that ran on water. In the 1930s, the Russian scientist Vladimir Lukyanov built an analog computer known as the "Water Integrator" or "Lukyanov's Integrator."This computer was built to solve partial differential equations. It was particularly useful in calculations for concrete construction, allowing for different materials and climate conditions. The device was not digital, but used water flowing through a series of interconnected tanks, tubes and pumps to perform its calculations. Lukyanov discovered that water flow is in many respects similar in its laws to the distribution of heat, thus by building a computer where the main component was water, he could visualize the invisible thermal process.Solutions were obtained by precisely measuring the levels of water in specific tubes, with accuracy down to fractions of a millimeter. Initially, Lukyanov developed the Water Integrator to address the problem of cracking in concrete under different environmental conditions. However, its applications quickly expanded, inspiring similar systems that were used across a range of fields, including geology, metallurgy, thermal physics, and even rocket engineering. This ingenious system offered practical solutions to manage the diverse materials and extreme climatic conditions faced in Russia. Although it may seem arcane compared to the silicon-based technologies we know today, Lukyanov's Water Integrator holds a significant place in the history of computers. It highlights the adaptability of human invention, demonstrating how scientists and engineers utilized readily available resources to tackle complex challenges long before the advent of modern computing. The Water Integrator played a role in significant engineering projects, such as the design of the Karakum Canal in the 1940s, one of the largest irrigation and water supply canals in the world, and the construction of the Baikal-Amur Mainline railway in the 1970s. Remarkably, water analog computers were used in the Soviet Union for large-scale modeling tasks until the 1980s, underscoring their utility and reliability over decades.Today, the Water Integrator can be seen at Moscow's Polytechnic Museum.

Expert reviews and ratings 80 Thats kind of a new situation, where Samsungs S-series device has been the go-to premium Android phone for quite a few years running. Google played some major catch-up with the Pixel 9-series, and now OnePlus is in the conversation, too. Thats awesome. By The Verge on January 07, 2025 90 OnePlus proves once again it's the master of flagship phone value with the OnePlus 13, despite another price increase. Battery life remains a standout feature, while the OnePlus 13 cameras, screen and software all help round out the phone's feature set. Some uneven photo brightness and shorter software support aside, it's going to be hard to find a better value flagship for less the rest of 2025. By Tom's Guide on January 07, 2025 80 The OnePlus 13 offers most of what you want in a flagship phoneincluding a stunningly bright display, swift performance, and top battery lifeat a slightly more palatable price than competitors. By PCMag on January 07, 2025 90 The OnePlus 13 aims higher than ever for OnePlus and it hits the mark. Its beautiful to hold, pleasing to use, and it performs better than any other smartphone you can buy right now. My old complaints have been pounded into silence by an amazingly durable design and the best support OnePlus has offered. The cameras take photos that capture the action with clarity. This is a phone that turns heads, but its more than just a pretty face. It lasts all day and through the night, then gets back up for work after a power nap. Sound fun? Just buy it already. By TechRadar on January 07, 2025 90 OnePlus is off to a flying start in 2025 with the OnePlus 13. It aims to deliver in all areas and only misses the mark in a couple while exceeding expectations in others. Battery tech, longevity and fast charging are a particular highlight, while the camera although good doesnt quite give top competition cause for concern. By TechAdvisor on January 07, 2025 90 The OnePlus 13's design, battery life, software, and huge power make it an easy recommendation, while its camera promises to be one of the year's best. By DigitalTrends on January 07, 2025 86 The 13 is, in fact, quite great on the fundamentals, offering some of the longest battery life in the class, together with speedy top-ups. No longer trailing in dust and water resistance, it's now as well-sealed as the rest, and it's even a step ahead in the build department thanks to its magnetic accessories capability. By GSMArena on January 07, 2025 100 There's nothing unlucky about the OnePlus 13. It's quite simply the company's best flagship to date, pulling together an official IP rating, blistering fast charging, and flexible, capable cameras in a way that OnePlus hasn't always managed in the past. While you might not get as many updates as you would with a Pixel or Galaxy, you'll get just about everything else you could ever want in a flagship phone. The OG flagship killer has made an absolutely killer flagship. By AndroidAuthority on January 07, 2025 75 At full price, the OnePlus 13 does slightly undercut its main rivals, but not by much, and it requires some sacrifices to get there. I'd like to see another $100 off the price, at which point this phone suddenly makes a lot more sense. If you can pick it up with a carrier discount, or with bundled extras thrown in, it's certainly worth your time and as long as you're not a keen photographer I don't think you'll be disappointed. By cnet on January 07, 2025 90 The OnePlus 13 stays true to the OnePlus name by providing a powerful smartphone packed with features, and they do it at a price you just cant argue with. Enhance your TV sound with the TCL S4BH soundbar, now on sale for just $70
When Dolby Atmos was still in its infancy, this three-dimensional surround standard was only achievable with the right passive speakers and AV receiver. Fast forward many years later, though, and now even some of the cheapest soundbars on the market will virtualize an entire Atmos configuration. Results-wise, this emulation doesnt deliver the sheer bravura of a wired-up speaker array, but its going to save you thousands of dollars on expensive hardware and installation costs.Of course, not all Dolby Atmos-compatible soundbars are created equal, which is why we only search for the best of the best when vetting through soundbar deals. Lo and behold, our pals at TCL are bringing the audio fire today: For a limited time, you can purchase the TCL S4BH S Class Soundbar for over half off. Thats right youll only pay $70 compared to the $150 sticker price that this model usually sells for.Why you should buy the TCL S4BH S Class SoundbarDelivering up to 100W at max power, the TCL S4BH features a streamlined design that meshes nicely with TVs, AV components, and home decor. With its plug-and-play connectivity, just a single HDMI eARC connection is all youll need to get started. And if your LED or OLED is on the older side, the S4BH is also equipped with a digital optical port (though this connection wont pass a full Dolby Atmos / DTS:X signal). Youll also be able to stream music wirelessly via the soundbars Bluetooth input.RelatedWhile this TCL soundbar doesnt include a wireless subwoofer, the S4BH does include a built-in bass reflex port for added low-end clarity. When paired with the S4BHs Auto Room Calibration tech, this TCL bar automatically calibrates sound output to match your listening space. We see plenty of TCL TV deals on a weekly basis, but seldom have we encountered a soundbar sale from the popular brand. That being said, were not sure how long this markdown will stick around, meaning today could be the last day to save more than 50% on this great Dolby Atmos soundbar.Editors Recommendations
