Sony shows off conceptual immersive gaming tech that lets you stand in a TV box and sniff The Last of UsSmelly and Joel.Image credit: Sony News by Matt Wales News Reporter Published on Jan. 7, 2025 Curious to know what wild ideas Sony might be pondering for the future of gaming? Well, you're in luck: it's just unveiled new conceptual technology designed to ramp up immersion by sticking players inside a TV box and squirting smells into the room. So if you've ever wanted a whiff of Kratos after a hard day's slaying, your dreams are now one step closer to reality. Not that Sony's Future Immersive Entertainment Concept (as it's officially known) is likely to be coming to living rooms anytime soon. As its name suggests, this is very much a CES 2025-focused proof-of-concept, showcasing just one possible future avenue for more immersive gaming, and not something even remotely close to production. It is, though, kind of neat, in a wildly gimmicky kind of way - taking some already existing ideas (all-encompassing displays, atmospherics whiffs, and so on) then reimagining them with cutting edge tech.Essentially, Sony's Future Immersive Entertainment Concept is a giant cube of LED panels that completely surround the players inside. As they explore the game world - that of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us in the case of Sony's new showcase trailer - players are bombarded with "audio, haptics, scent, and atmospherics" designed to draw them further into the experience. The Last of Us - official Sony Immersive Entertainment Concept trailer.Watch on YouTubeAdditionally, it's possible to wield physical tools that interact with the world on-screen, and we're shown a flashlight that only illuminates whatever it's being pointing at, as well as various weapons. The downside to all this, of course, is that it's really only convincing with static scenes (plus you'd need an arena-sized living room and a big wad of cash to accommodate it), but the upside is it could finally let you whiff the fruity fungal bouquet of a mouldering Clicker. Yum.Some might argue a more immediately viable solution for greater gaming immersion would be VR, but Sony doesn't appear to be in any particular rush to do anything meaningful with PSVR2 - so your closest equivalent to its The Last of Us immersive concept right now is probably standing in the kitchen with the lights off and getting someone to pelt you with mushrooms. If all the above sounds like an excessively energetic way to get your The Last of Us fix, you could also just plop yourself in front of the TV ready for season two of HBO's acclaimed live-action adaptation, which was recently confirmed to be airing this April. PC owners can also get stuck into The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered at the same time (3rd April, more specifically), but there might be a bit of a wait for new The Last of Us stuff given that Naughty Dog its currently working on sci-fi hack-and-slasher Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Lenovo unveils Legion Go 2 and Go S handheld gaming PCs, including SteamOS model
Lenovo unveils Legion Go 2 and Go S handheld gaming PCs, including SteamOS modelGo S launches this month.Image credit: Lenovo News by Matt Wales News Reporter Published on Jan. 7, 2025 While some handheld gaming PC manufacturers are busy cornering the comically large form factor market, Lenovo has slipped in to announce several new - and considerably more portable - devices of its own, including the Legion Go 2 and a handheld utilising SteamOS.Starting with the Legion Go 2, that's Lenovo's currently still-in-prototype second generation handheld gaming PC, which - alongside its built-in kickstand and ergonomically improved detachable controllers - sports an 8.8-inch OLED display with VRR support, and comes equipped with either the upcoming AMD Ryzen Z2 or Ryzen Z2 Extreme. It can also sport up to 32GB of RAM and 2TB of SSD storage, to further boost its beefy credentials.Unfortunately, there's no hint of a release window or price for the Legion Go 2 just yet, with Lenovo instead choosing to focus its attention on its other newly announced handheld gaming PC: the more modest, and more imminently available, Legion Go S. A prototype of Lenovo's Legion Go 2. | Image credit: LenovoThe Legion Go S offers a sleeker alternative to Lenovo's existing Legion Go, doing away with the former's detachable controllers in favour of a more rounded all-in-one design. It features an 8-inch, 16:10 IPS LCD multi-touch screen (with a 120Hz variable refresh rate and 1920 x 1200 resolution), alongside hall-effect thumbsticks, a redesigned D-pad, and dual stage triggers. As for the insides, Legion Go S includes either an AMD Ryzen Z2 Go or Z1 Extreme processor, and can be equipped with up to 32GB of RAM and 1TB of SSD. All this lives inside a 299mm x 127.6 x 22.6 shell and weighs upwards of 730g - around 90g heavier than Steam Deck. Lenovo tells The Verge it's targeting two to 2.5 hours of battery life for demanding games. The SteamOS version of Lenovo's Legion Go S (the Windows 11 variant is white). | Image credit: LenovoLenovo's first Legion Go S model begins shipping this month, costing 649.99/$729.99 with the Z2 Go processor, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. It'll be followed in May by a slightly lower-specced 600/$599.99 variant, featuring the Z2 Go, 16GB RAM, and 1TB storage. Both machines utilise Windows 11, but Lenovo is also working on a SteamOS-powered Go S, making it the first authorised third-party handheld gaming device to utilise Valve's operating system. This is the cheapest of the bunch, costing $499.99 with the Z2 Go, 16GB RAM, and 512GB storage - and The Verge reports it should also arrive in May.For anyone with an eye on the slightly more distant future, however, Digital Foundry has taken a look at AMD's newly announced trio of next-gen Ryzen Z-series APUs - the kind that'll be packed into Lenovo's second generation Legion Go 2 - if you're curious to learn more.

20 Bathroom Organizer Solutions the Pros Stand Behind
No matter the size of your bathroom or the frequency of your shopping habits, theres always need for a proper bathroom organizer. Keeping that all-important space organized can be a challenging featespecially if you, like us, keep backups of all the most regularly used products or want to try out every new product launch. Its easy to let bottles, brushes, and other bathroom items pile up. But thats where bathroom shelves and storage baskets come into play.In an effort to streamline your beauty routine, implement a storage system that works with your daily life. We spoke to six home organization experts on the most efficient ways to create order in your abode and pulled together all the bathroom storage solutions they recommend. Read on for 20 bathroom organizer solutions that can help turn a cluttered commode into an oasis focused on functionality.Contain your hair productsTools, such as hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons, can take up lots of space on your bathroom countertop. With long wires and bulky exteriors, it can be difficult to find a place to store hair tools while also having easy access. Ann Lightfoot, cofounder of Done and Done Home, recommends putting deep stackable bins with sliding drawers under your sink to contain all of your larger hair care products. Measure your area carefully, she advises, as this will help take advantage of every inch you have.Stori Audrey Stackable Cosmetic Organizer DrawersClear organizers make it easy to find what youre looking forand identify when youre low on your essentials. They also make great options for vanity organizers or any spaces where you need to wrangle your makeup go-tos.Merrylun Metal Pull Out Under Sink OrganizerExtra towels, toilet paper, soap refills, cleaning suppliesall are easily accessible from these sliding shelves. The L shape is especially thoughtful, since it fits easily around pipes and whatever weird angles your under-sink space serves up.Showcase your toiletriesSkin care, makeup, and perfume typically come in the most beautiful packaging that adds a pop of personality to your bathroom. Lisa Jacobs, founder of Imagine It Done, suggests installing floating shelves to fill the empty wall space and make it easy to sort through all of your beautiful toiletries.Upsimples Floating Shelves (Set of 6)The ledge on these white wall shelves is an important design touch, especially if youre storing something fragile like perfume bottles. Install a towel bar underneath that matches your toilet paper holder for some extra cohesion.West Elm Acrylic Ledge ShelfAcrylic shelves put colorful packaging and even that cute matte black storage box for your cotton swabs on full display. Wall shelves that melt into the background can also make your space feel even larger while offering a good declutter. This design comes in two lengths24" and 36"so you can mix and match for even more storage options.Drawer organizers are a mustBreak the habit of overstuffing your bathroom drawers. Jamie Grunfeld, founder of Better Than B4, recommends organizing regularly used products in stackable drawer organizers. These organizers and drawer dividers designate a space for each one of your products and makeup brushes, making it less tempting to stuff your drawers and easier to find products when youre in a rush.Marie Kondo Hikidashi Bamboo Drawer Organizers (Set of 6)Designed to house tiny, miscellaneous items (weve all got them!), these organizer trays come in different sizes so you can make the most of whatever drawer space youre working with. Made of bamboo, they also have small grooves that make them easy to stack. The Container Store Acrylic Stackable Drawer OrganizersMix and match different sizes to create a custom storage and organization set that fits your space. Slide them into a storage cabinet, vanity, bathroom vanity drawer, or leave them on a tabletop so you can easily grab your bathroom essentials. The clear design is just another opportunity to show off some cute make-up packaging.Utilize over-the-toilet spaceSuddenly find yourself with no bathroom cabinet space left? Look into purchasing a freestanding over-the-toilet storage unit to increase the storage space in your bathroom. These units let you stash utilitarian products such as toilet paper, linens, tampons, and cleaning supplies. We love them because they take advantage of space that would otherwise be wasted, Ann says.ALLZONE Adjustable Over The Toilet Storage ShelfThis floor-to-ceiling design isnt something you see every day in a bathroom. The tension rod design is adjustable, accommodating ceiling heights between 64 and 113. The shelves are also adjustable, both height and width. For extra points, find a shower curtain rod in a similar style.West Elm Profile Ladder StorageNo need to drill any holes to unlock storage potential. These shelves are made of tempered safety glass and the legs come with adjustable levelersperfect for the weird, sloping floor your apartment seems to favor.Dont let small spaces go to wasteEven if you live with a super-small bathroom, there may be wasted space between your sink and toilet or in a tight corner. Shira Gill, organization expert and author of Minimalista, recommends a slim rolling cart with open shelves or a neutral-colored corner shelving unit to create bathroom storage in every inch of your space.Rejuvenation Devin Teak 3-Tier Corner ShelfThe teak foundation protects this shelf from moisture, meaning you can drop it directly in the shower to house your shampoo, soap dispenser, skin care, and whatever else youre reaching for come bath time.Yamazaki Rolling Slim CartThis sleek set of rolling storage shelves is sneaky. Were partial to the yellow colorwaya perfect pop for a neutral space. This storage cart was a game changer for housing my very involved skin-care routine, says commerce editor Audrey Lee. I dont have any sort of cabinets in my humble bathroom, and the slim silhouette really helps me maximize the space.Get rid of bulky plastic or cardboard packagingProducts such as flossers, Q-tips, and cotton balls tend to come in bulky packaging that takes up more room than necessary. Instead, Kelly Welch, founder of Organized by KW, advises using matching marbled containers to discreetly store these products in plain sight. Put on display next to the sink, a matching set can make your toothbrush and bar of soap look nice and uniform, or you can tuck them away in a drawer or bathroom cabinet. Get eco-friendly and reuse the containers for soap, lotion, and moreweve also tried a few packaging light subscription services thatll send refills in a snap.CB2 Nexus Marble Bath AccessoriesIf spa vibes are what youre after, this set will get you closer to the goal. Available in both black and white, there are eight different designs: soap pump, vanity tray, large canister, bath caddy, tissue box cover, wastebasket, toilet brush, and toothbrush holder.West Elm Ume Bath AccessoriesIf marble isnt your look, consider this a chance to add a pop of color to your bathroom. The indigo blue option for these accessories is a welcome surprise.Try lidded baskets to store personal productsIts important to keep a back stock of toilet paper, razors, feminine hygiene products, and cleaning supplies for any home. However, they tend to be rather unaesthetic and dont necessarily need to be on display. For products youd rather not have in plain sight, Shira recommends using baskets with flip lids as a stylish and functional concealed storage solution.Zara Home Seagrass Basket with LidThis woven basket comes in two sizes (7.9"H x 16.5"W x 11.8"D and 9.8"H x 20.9"W x 14.6"D) and has a handy little clasp to make sure the lid stays put.Crate & Barrel Sedona Grey Lidded Rectangular ToteThis is the perfect hiding place for extra rolls of toilet paper. Made of 100% rattan, each one is handwoven and is one in a set of matching accessoriesif thats the aesthetic youre leaning into.Replace your old shower caddy with a corner caddyOver-the-showerhead or hanger caddies tend to be bulky and can be unstable depending on the weight of the products on them. Instead, Lisa advises installing a tension corner caddy to take advantage of the awkward corner in your shower and keep your shampoo and conditioner from crashing every time you step in. A wall-mounted basket is stable and useful as well.OXO Good Grips Quick-Extend Aluminum Pole CaddyThe thing we love most about this one is that there are small holes on the shelves, making it possible to store bottles upside down. Never again will you have to wait for the last dregs of your shampoo to make their appearance.Quiet Town The Spot Shower OrganizerOkay, this one isnt technically a corner caddy, but consider it a sibling. Installation is simple: Hang it over your showerhead or mount it on the wall. The strap length is adjustable, as are the crew of shelves and accessories.Have fun with your makeup organizersPutting on your makeup should be a fun part of your daily routine, and organizing the products should be no different. And theres no sweat if you dont have a medicine cabinet to tuck it all away. Counter space allowing, Ann suggests displaying makeup products in acrylic drawers. If you dont have the room, put a lazy Susan inside your drawers or cabinets to allow for convenient storage and save yourself time when searching for what you need.Masirs Small Rotating Makeup OrganizerSmall and mighty, makeup brushes and your going out essentials will feel right at home here. The acrylic design is good for small table spaces as wellits clear footprint makes it look even smaller than it is.Sorbus Acrylic Cosmetics Makeup and Jewelry Storage CaseWhether you use this bestseller on a vanity or in a cabinet, its compact design is easy to transport when you need to dig into its contents.Keep your towels handyLast but not least on our list of bathroom storage ideas: towel storage. Towels are typically tough to store because of their thick material, variety of sizes, and daily use. Karine Bouganim, owner of Karine OCD, advises displaying towels on a towel rack or ladder to give them the hotel look and feel. Matching towelsboth color and textureare a must, she says, so its time to say goodbye to your mismatched towels.Hawkins New York Essential Towel BarWith six colors options (terra-cotta, black, ivory, mustard, olive, and peacock) and two lengths (16" and 31.5"), this design offers a touch of utilitarian style.Crate & Barrel Jackson Black Towel LadderWho knew towel storage could be so chic? Made of matte black iron, its four rungs are ready to handle bath towels, hand towels, post-shower robes, and any other linens you want within range.

Facebook Deletes Internal Employee Criticism of New Board Member Dana White
SubscribeJoin the newsletter to get the latest updates.Metas HR team is deleting internal employee criticism of new board member, UFC president and CEO Dana White, at the same time that CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced to the world that Meta will get back to our roots around free expression, 404 Media has learned. Some employee posts questioning why criticism of White is being deleted are also being deleted.Monday, Zuckerberg made a post on a platform for Meta employees called Workplace announcing that Meta is adding Dana White, John Elkann, and Charlie Songhurst to the companys board of directors (Zuckerbergs post on Workplace was identical to his public announcement). Employee response to this was mixed, according to screenshots of the thread obtained by 404 Media. Some posted positive or joking comments: Major W, one employee posted. We hire Connor [McGregor] next for after work sparring?, another said. Joe Rogan may be next, a third said. A fourth simply said LOL.Do you work at Meta? I would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message me securely on Signal at +1 202 505 1702. But other employees criticized the decision and raised the point that there is video of White slapping his wife in a nightclub; White was not arrested and was not suspended from UFC for the domestic violence incident. McGregor, one of the most famous UFC fighters of all time, was held liable for sexual assault and was ordered by a civil court to pay $260,000 to a woman who accused him of raping her in 2018. McGregor is appealing the decision.Kind of disheartening to see people in the comments celebrating a man who is on video assaulting his wife and another who was recently convicted of rape, one employee commented, referring to White and McGregor. I can kind of excuse individuals for being unaware, but Meta surely did their due diligence on White and concluded that what he did is fine. I feel like Im on another planet, another employee commented. We have completely lost the plot, a third said.Several posts critical of White were deleted by Metas Internal Community Relations team as violating a set of rules called the Community Engagement Expectations, which govern internal employee communications. In the thread, the Internal Community Relations team member explained why they were deleting content: Im posting a comment here with a reminder about the CEE, as multiple comments have been flagged by the community for review. Its important that we maintain a respectful work environment where people can do their best work. We need to keep in mind that the CEE applies to how we communicate with and about members of our communityincluding members of our Board. Insulting, criticizing, or antagonizing our colleagues or Board members is not aligned with the CEE. In 2022, Meta banned employees from discussing very disruptive topics. This post is for paid members onlyBecome a paid member for unlimited ad-free access to articles, bonus podcast content, and more.SubscribeSign up for free access to this postFree members get access to posts like this one along with an email round-up of our week's stories.SubscribeAlready have an account? Meta Now Lets Users Say Gay and Trans People Have Mental Illness
Meta announced a series of major updates to its content moderation policies today, including ending its fact-checking partnerships and getting rid of restrictions on speech about topics like immigration, gender identity and gender that the company describes as frequent subjects of political discourse and debate. Its not right that things can be said on TV or the floor of Congress, but not on our platforms, Metas newly-appointed chief global affairs officer Joel Kaplan wrote in a blog post outlining the changes. In an accompanying video, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the companys current rules in these areas as just out of touch with mainstream discourse. In tandem with this announcement, the company made a number of updates across its Community Guidelines, an extensive set of rules that outline what kinds of content are prohibited on Metas platforms, including Instagram, Threads, and Facebook. Some of the most striking changes were made to Metas Hateful Conduct policy, which covers discussions on immigration and gender. In a notable shift, the company now says it allows allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation, given political and religious discourse about transgenderism and homosexuality and common non-serious usage of words like weird. In other words, Meta now appears to permit users to accuse transgender or gay people of being mentally ill because of their gender expression and sexual orientation. The company did not respond to requests for clarification on the policy.Meta spokesperson Corey Chambliss told WIRED these restrictions will be loosened globally. When asked whether the company will adopt different policies in countries with strict regulations governing hate speech, Chambliss pointed to Meta's current guidelines for addressing local laws.Other significant changes made to Metas Hateful Conduct policy Tuesday include:Removing language prohibiting content targeting people based on the basis of their protected characteristics, which include race, ethnicity, and gender identity, when they are combined with claims that they have or spread the coronavirus. Without this provision, it may now be within bounds to accuse, for example, Chinese people of bearing responsibility for the Covid-19 pandemic.A new addition appears to carve out room for people who want to post about how, for example, women shouldnt be allowed to serve in the military or men shouldnt be allowed to teach math because of their gender. Meta now permits content that argues for "gender-based limitations of military, law enforcement, and teaching jobs. We also allow the same content based on sexual orientation, when the content is based on religious beliefs.Another update elaborates on what Meta permits in conversations about social exclusion. It now states that people sometimes use sex- or gender-exclusive language when discussing access to spaces often limited by sex or gender, such as access to bathrooms, specific schools, specific military, law enforcement, or teaching roles, and health or support groups." Previously, this carve-out was only available for discussions about keeping health and support groups limited to one gender.Metas Hateful Conduct policy previously opened by noting that hateful speech may promote offline violence. That sentence, which had been present in the policy since 2019, has been removed from the updated version released Tuesday. (In 2018, following reports from human rights groups, Meta has admitted that its platform was used to incite violence against religious minorities in Myanmar.) The update does preserve language towards the bottom of the policy prohibiting content that could incite imminent violence or intimidation.

Metas Fact-Checking Partners Say They Were Blindsided by Decision to Axe Them
Metas fact-checking partners claim they were blindsided by the companys decision to abandon third-party fact-checking on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads in favor of a Community Notes model, and some say they are now scrambling to figure out if they can survive the hole this leaves in their funding. We heard the news just like everyone else, says Alan Duke, cofounder and editor in chief of fact-checking site Lead Stories, which started working with Meta in 2019. No advance notice. The news that Meta was no longer planning on using their services was announced in a blog post by chief global affairs officer Joel Kaplan on Tuesday morning and an accompanying video from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Instead, the company plans to rely on X-style Community Notes, which allow users to flag content that they think is inaccurate or requires further explanation.Meta partners with dozens of fact-checking organizations and newsrooms across the globe, 10 of which are based in the US, where Metas new rules will first be applied. We were blindsided by this, Jesse Stiller, the managing editor of Meta fact-checking partner Check Your Fact, tells WIRED. His organization started working with Meta in 2019, and it has 10 people working in the newsroom. This was totally unexpected and out of left field for us. We weren't aware this decision was being considered until Mark dropped the video overnight. The news organizations who had partnered with Meta to tackle the spread of disinformation on the platform from 2016 are scrambling to figure out how this change will impact them.We have no idea what the future looks like for the website going forward, Stiller says.Duke says Lead Stories has a diverse revenue stream and most of its operations are outside of the US, but he claims the decision would still have an impact on them. The most painful part of this is losing some very good, experienced journalists, who will no longer be paid to research false claims found on Meta platforms, Duke says. For others the financial implications are even more dire. One editor at a US-based fact-checking organization that works with Meta, who was not authorized to speak on the record, told WIRED that Metas decision is going to eventually drain us out.Meta did not respond to a request to comment on its partners allegations or the financial impact its decision would have on some organizations."Meta didnt owe fact-checkers anything, but it knows that by pulling this partnership its removing a very significant source of funding for the ecosystem globally, says Alexios Mantzarlis, who helped establish the first partnerships between fact-checkers and Facebook between 2015 and 2019 as director of the International Fact Checking Network.Metas partners were also angered by Zuckerbergs allegation that fact-checkers had become too biased.According to Duke, it is disappointing to hear Mark Zuckerberg accuse the organizations in Meta's US third-party fact-checking program of being too politically biased. Let me fact-check that. Lead Stories follows the highest standards of journalism and ethics required by the International Fact-Checking Network code of principles. We fact-check without regard to where on the political spectrum a false claim originates.
