What Counts as a 'Rest Day' (and How Often You Need Them)
Rest days are an important part of any workout routine, since they help you to save your energy for future training days. But what counts as rest, exactlydo you need to avoid all exercise? Ill break down the purpose of these days and answer your questions about what does and doesnt count. What is the purpose of rest days?People say a lot of things about rest days that arent really true, so Id like to take a minute to separate myths from facts.Rest days actually do the following:They balance your workload. Your body can handle three hard workouts in a week if you balance that by giving it four rest days. Note that the number and type of rest days depends on how hard the work days are. If you did six days of relatively easy workouts, one rest day each week would be plenty. They help you fit exercise into your schedule. Most people cant hit the gym every day, just because we have other things to do with our lives. A three-day exercise program (with, yep, four rest days) is a lot easier for most of us to stick to than a six-day one. They take the guesswork out of easy days. If your program told you to alternate hard and easy days, you might find yourself working too hard on the easy days. But if its a complete rest day, you just dont show up to the gym, and now you know for sure you arent doing too much. Now lets talk about some things that rest days are often said to do, but that arent actually true:They dont prevent injury. Balancing your total workload can help to prevent injury, but as we discussed, rest days are one tool that can help in that balance. There are ways to safely exercise without rest days. They arent necessary for muscle growth. Its sometimes said that your muscles recover or grow when youre resting, but keep in mind that if you do a one-hour workout every day, your muscles have 23 hours to rest before the next one. They dont allow full recovery. The results of your workout take days to weeks for your body to fully recover from. We dont wait for full recovery each time, or else wed never get on a consistent schedule and never make any progress in training. Your muscles (and other body systems) can work even when theyre not fully recoveredwithin reason, of course. When should I take rest days? This depends on your training program. Any good training program, whether you get it from an experienced coach or download it from the internet, should be designed with a good balance of work and rest.If youre designing your own routine, here are some guidelines to help you know where to put the rest days. These are not ironclad laws, and lots of good programs will do things differently. But these are helpful rules of thumb to get you started:In a strength training program, each muscle group should get a rest day after being worked for 1 to 2 days. That could mean a full-body strength program where you lift Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, or a split where you do upper body Monday and Thursday, lower body Tuesday and Friday, and rest Wednesday and the weekend. In a running or cardio program, beginners should get a rest day after 1 to 2 consecutive workout days. That allows for a Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule, which is very popular for beginners. For people with more experience, an easy day can take the place of a rest day. For example, a runner might run five days a week, but only two of those are hard workouts and the other two are easy jogs. Its OK to do two workouts on consecutive days, so long as your total work/rest balance stays the same. For example, if you cant do your Wednesday workout and you end up running on Monday, Thursday, and Friday, thats OK because you still have four rest days this week.Above all, if youre writing or modifying a program for yourself, listen to your body. Its unwise to jump into a five-day-a-week plan when you dont normally exercise at all. Its much better to start with three days, see how that goes, then consider adding more workouts and adjusting their intensity. What should happen on a rest day?Keeping the purposes of rest days in mind, you want to make sure that your rest day accomplishes what its meant to accomplish. In a strength training program, your rest days should give you a break from any serious strength training. That doesnt mean you need to sit on the couch all day, but it does mean that you probably shouldnt do squats again if you just did squats yesterday. On a rest day, you may keep up your baseline level of activity. If you normally get 8,000 steps, you can still take 8,000 steps. If you normally walk your dog, you can still walk your dog. If you work a job that has you on your feet or moving equipment all day, you can still go to work and do your job. You dont literally have to rest, you just have to keep your activity to your baseline level. Can I do strength training when Im resting from cardio, and vice versa?Once you get used to it, yes. Strength training and cardio are different enough that they dont give your body the same kinds of stress. In fact, lifters who do cardio may find that the cardio helps their muscles to recover. And runners who add some strength training may find that the benefits outweigh the lost rest time.Beginners should approach this cautiously, though. If youre doing couch to 5K and coming from a literal couch-potato life, give yourself a few weeks to get used to the new schedule before adding in some beginner-level strength training. That said, remember to listen to your body. If youre a relatively active person, and youve just started strength training, you may not find it fatigues you at all to add a little light jogging. Just pay attention to how that goes, and make adjustments as needed.Consider keeping hard days hard and easy days easyHeres another not-ironclad rule: some coaches advise that its better to stack two workouts on a hard day to free up some rest time on a different day. That could mean doing a run and a strength workout on Tuesday so that you can take a true rest day on Wednesday. If youve been ramping up your exercise volume and find yourself longing for a rest day, try this approach and see if it feels better to you.Can I walk on my rest days?Yes, because walking is light enough exercise that its not likely to fatigue you too much for the training to come. If you dont normally walk much, start with just a short walk and see how that goes. If you normally walk a lot, you can pretty much walk any amount you want on your rest days. Can I do yoga on my rest days?Yes, if you keep it relatively light compared to your harder workout days. A rest day is a good time for gentle flexibility work, light strength work, and just keeping your body moving a bit. If you feel like your yoga session does that, perfect.I would only recommend not doing yoga on a rest day if your idea of yoga is a really tough power yoga class, or if it involves an extreme level of stretching. In that case, you should classify it as a hard workout and make sure that you get some rest from those hard workouts as well. Can I do active recovery on my rest days?Depends what that means to you, but probably! Mobility work, foam rolling, light yoga, walking, and easy swimming can all fall under the umbrella of active recovery. Just remember that active recovery isnt defined by what kind of thing you do, but by how hard it is on your body. If youre a swimmer and find it relaxing to do a few easy laps, then yes, that can absolutely be a recovery activity. But if youre new to swimming, and you find yourself flailing in the water gasping for breath, that is not a recovery activity. Use a little common sense and youll be able to figure it out.

My Favorite Products to Make Cleaning the Bathroom Easier
We may earn a commission from links on this page.A surprising number of products are on the market, promising to help you clean your bathroom. You don't necessarily need to spend a lot of money to find some good ones that will actually work to make the job easier, but some are definitely better than others. As someone who writes about cleaning for a living, you can imagine I've tested a good many of them. Here are the ones I have found to be the best over the years. The two best products for cleaning (most of) your bathroomIt's not worth worrying about the different products you're going to need to clean your tub, sink, toilet, and fixturesyou really only need two products, and they both work fabulously. For porcelain and tile, pick up some Soft Scrub. I was first introduced to this product two summers ago, when my boyfriend suddenly decided to get a boat. Every night when we docked, we were tasked with scrubbing away the salty water that covered its many surfaces, and we quickly found that Soft Scrub, with its mix of a gentle abrasion and a lot of suds, was the most effective and least harmful product for the job. I soon picked some up for use around the house. I think of it like a mild exfoliator for everything that needs cleaning. It ever so slightly buffs and resurfaces, never scratches, and foams up to provide a good clean. For the bathroom, I suggest a formulation with bleach. Soft Scrub Liquid Cleanser With Bleach White 24 Oz $9.66 at Amazon Shop Now Shop Now $9.66 at Amazon For fixtures like faucets, handles, or the toilet flusher, I recommend the same thing I recommend for kitchen metals: Brasso. This seven-in-one polish is inexpensiveyou can usually find it for under $5and makes copper, steel, chrome, and more shine with minimal effort. My favorite products to clean tougher spots in the bathroomIn the past, I've recommended using electronic scrubbing brushes to ease the burden of scrubbing tiles, grout, and crevices. Since I started using the more abrasive Soft Scrub, though, I find they are usually unnecessary. For anything I do have to scrub with a little more vigor, I again go back to another product I like to use in the kitchen: My trusty Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Extra Foamy. You can get five of these sponges for under $10. I buy one pack and use them all around my home. Like traditional melamine sponges, they make quick work of sticky messes and scuffs, but thanks to the little foaming pods of cleaner inside, they also suds up, providing extra grime-busting effectiveness. Last week, I tried a new body scrub, which mean that this week, I had an ugly ring of crust around my tub. My Mr. Clean Extra Foamy cleared it up instantlya huge relief to me, a renter who did not anticipate the cheap body scrub causing such a mess in my bathroom. Rubbermaid Reveal Multi-Purpose Scrub Brush $19.98 at Amazon Shop Now Shop Now $19.98 at Amazon That said, if you have a bunch of tiny crevices in your bathroomtiling, air vents, and spaces between storage containersan electronic brushes may still be useful for you. There is really no good reason to overwork your elbows when something like this Rubbermaid scrubber exists and costs around $20. More of my bathroom-cleaning essentialsIn addition to the trusted tools above, I also keep a miniature squeegee in the tub. Whenever I finish a shower, I use it to quickly clean the glass shower door. This has significantly reduced how often and how hard I need to give it a more thorough cleaning, as it prevents moisture buildup and stops water stains and streaks before they start. Here is the one I have, which cost me less than $10. For drain cleaning, I never use liquid cleaners or decloggers, as their effectiveness pales in comparison to a Drain Weasel. This long drain-snaking device has a rotating handle. With regular preventive use, I find it easily yanks gunk and hair out of the drain before a big buildup poses a problem. As a big believer in the old adage about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure, I also consider other preventive measures part of my "cleaning" routine. I have this set of three coatings from spotLESS MATERIALS ($24.99), and I've found them to be effective. One is designed to coat the toilet, another handles fixtures, and the third is for glass. I spritz them onto their corresponding surfaces to create a moisture-repelling barrier, which stops streaks and stains from appearing. (I also use the glass-coating one on my glass table to get out in front of food-related messes.)Finally, consider this cordless window vacuum from Sharper Image if you hate cleaning your tooth-paste covered mirror. You fill with water, run it across your mirror, and let it do the work for you. It sprays down the glass and removes the water, sorting it into a separate reservoir so the clean and dirty water never mix. It's $63.99 and admittedly unnecessary, especially if you only have a small mirror (like me), and realize you can accomplish the same thing with a bit of effort and a bottle of Windex (which I do). Still, it's cool, and that counts for something.

Secret Phone Surveillance Tech Was Likely Deployed at 2024 DNC
A device capable of intercepting phone signals was likely deployed during the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, WIRED has learned, raising critical questions about who authorized its use and for what purpose. The device, known as a cell-site simulator, was identified by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a digital rights advocacy organization, after analyzing wireless signal data collected by WIRED during the August event.Cell-site simulators mimic cell towers to intercept communications, indiscriminately collecting sensitive data such as call metadata, location information, and app traffic from all phones within their range. Their use has drawn widespread criticism from privacy advocates and activists, who argue that such technology can be exploited to covertly monitor protesters and suppress dissent. The DNC convened amid widespread protests over Israels assault on Gaza. While credentialed influencers attended exclusive yacht parties and VIP events, thousands of demonstrators faced a heavy law enforcement presence, including officers from the US Capitol Police, the Secret Service, Homeland Security Investigations, local sheriffs offices, and Chicago police.Concerns over potential surveillance prompted WIRED to conduct a first-of-its-kind wireless survey to investigate whether cell-site simulators were being deployed. Reporters, equipped with two rooted Android phones and Wi-Fi hot spots running detection software, used Rayhuntera tool developed by the EFF to detect data anomalies associated with these devices. WIREDs reporters monitored signals at protests and event locations across Chicago, collecting extensive data during the political convention.Initial tests conducted during the DNC revealed no conclusive evidence of cell-site simulator activity. However, months later, EFF technologists reanalyzed the raw data using improved detection methods. According to Cooper Quintin, a senior technologist at the EFF, the Rayhunter tool stores all interactions between devices and cell towers, allowing for deeper analysis as detection techniques evolve.A breakthrough came when EFF technologists applied a new heuristic to examine situations where cell towers requested IMSI (international mobile subscriber identity) numbers from devices. According to the EFFs analysis, on August 18the day before the convention officially begana device carried by WIRED reporters en route a hotel housing Democratic delegates from states in the US Midwest abruptly switched to a new tower. That tower asked for the devices IMSI and then immediately disconnecteda sequence consistent with the operation of a cell-site simulator. This is extremely suspicious behavior that normal towers do not exhibit, Quintin says. He notes that the EFF typically observed similar patterns only during simulated and controlled attacks. This is not 100 percent incontrovertible truth, but its strong evidence suggesting a cell-site simulator was deployed. We dont know who was responsibleit could have been the US government, foreign actors, or another entity.Under Illinois law, law enforcement agencies must obtain a warrant to deploy cell-site simulators. Similarly, federal agentsincluding those from the Department of Homeland Securityare required to secure warrants unless an immediate national security threat exists. However, a 2023 DHS Inspector General report found that both the Secret Service and Homeland Security Investigations did not always comply with these requirements.

Wicked star Cynthia Erivo wants to play X-Men hero Storm
Cynthia Erivo may still be experiencing a warm round of applause for her performance as Elphaba in 2024s Wicked, but that doesnt mean she doesnt already have her sights set on other, future roles. On the contrary, the actress revealed during a recent interview with the National Board of Review that shed like to follow up her performance in Wicked by playing one of the most iconic female superheroes of all time.I really want to play Storm, Erivo revealed on the carpet for the National Board of Review Awards Gala in New York City. The actress went on to say that she believes the popular X-Men character hasnt yet been explored as deeply onscreen as she deserves to be. I know it sounds frivolous, but I think we havent uncovered how grand she is and all of that inner turmoil that she has, Erivo remarked. So I think theres a world in which we could do something with that.Marvel StudiosSo far, Storm has only been brought to life in live-action form twice: first by Halle Berry in the Fox-produced X-Men films of the 2000s and early 2010s and second by Alexandra Shipp in the prequel movies X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Dark Phoenix. The character has, of course, remained a constant fixture of the animated X-Men movies and TV shows that have been produced over the decades, and Alison Sealy-Smith even recently voiced a variant of Storm in Marvels What If? season 3.Recommended VideosRight now, Storms live-action future is a bit unclear. In the years since it acquired the screen rights to the X-Men, Marvel Studios has dropped a few mutant references. However, the studios plans for the X-Men within the Marvel Cinematic Universe havent yet been publicly articulated, which means no one currently knows when Storm will get to make her live-action debut in the franchise. Whenever Marvel starts discussing that moment, though, they can do so with the knowledge that at least one high-profile actress has already thrown her name into the ring to play the character.Wicked is now playing in theaters.Editors Recommendations

Mark Zuckerberg takes another shot at Apple and says it's 'squeezing people' for money
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has had a longstanding feud with Apple. He once again took shots at Apple in a recent interview with Joe Rogan. The CEO said Apple hasn't innovated in a while and criticized the ecosystem the iPhonemaker built.Mark Zuckerberg is taking more shots at Apple. In an interview on the "Joe Rogan Experience" podcast that was published Friday, the Meta CEO shared several issues he has with Apple, continuing his decadelong feud with the Cupertino company.Zuckerberg said on the podcast that Apple has been slow to innovate since the iPhone. He added that the few ways the company has been able to profit since then is by imposing developers' fees and creating an ecosystem that's difficult for other companies to penetrate. The Facebook creator credited Apple for making one of the most popular smartphones in the world, but he said Apple hasn't "really invented anything great in a while" since the iPhone."It's like Steve Jobs invented the iPhone and now they're just kind of sitting on it 20 years later," he told Rogan. To make up for declining sales in iPhones, Zuckerberg said Apple has been "squeezing people" by imposing what he called a "30% tax" on developers and creating an enclosed ecosystem around Apple's popular products."They build stuff like Airpods, which are cool, but they've just thoroughly hamstrung the ability for anyone else to build something that can connect to the iPhone in the same way," he said.Zuckerberg said Meta experienced this when it was developing the Ray-Ban Meta glasses. The CEO said Apple declined to let Meta use the same "protocol" Apple uses for Airpods in order to allow the Meta glasses to connect seamlessly to iPhones. Zuckerberg said he believed Apple was using privacy and security concerns as an excuse to keep a wall around the Apple ecosystem.Meta's chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth echoed a similar sentiment in an October interview with "Stratechery.""The thing I worry about with Apple specifically is that they have their phones and devices so locked down that they can self-preference a ton," he said, pointing to Airpods as one example.Spokespeople for Meta and Apple did not respond to a request for comment sent during the weekend.Zuckerberg has been undergoing his own brand transformation as he preps for a second Trump administration, walking back on content moderation and rolling back DEI initiatives at his company. But his feud with Apple goes back to at least 2014.Previously, Zuckerberg has criticized Apple's prices, its app store and privacy policies, and, more recently, the company's Vision Pro VR headsets.Still, Zuckerberg said on the podcast that he remains optimistic."I mean, the good news about the tech industry is that it's just super dynamic and things are constantly getting invented," he said. "And I think companies if you just don't do a good job for like 10 years, eventually you're just going to get beat by someone."
