This month, 11 games are being added and these range from PS1 and PS2 classics, to indie hits from not too long ago.Back in November we got the Yakuza spin-off Like a Dragon: Ishin, and if you're hungry for more of RGG Studio's signature blend of action and gangland melodrama, you can hop into Like a Dragon Gaiden this month. There's also God of War Ragnarok in case you want to dip into Sony's first-party library, Sayonara Hearts will let you break hearts and bones, you can check out the first Citizen Sleeper game before its sequel arrives at the end of the month, and catch up with an undead knight from the original PlayStation console days.As a reminder, all PS Plus subscribers can also claim this month's batch of new games, as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered are all available to download right now. God of War Ragnarok (PS5, PS4)The final chapter in Kratos' Nordic saga, God of War Ragnarok is an action-packed game that also tells a heartfelt story. Set shortly after the events of the 2018 God of War game, Ragnarok expanded on its ideas to deliver a bigger and grander adventure as Kratos and his son Atreus found themselves in conflict with the Norse pantheon of gods. On top of the excellent single-player campaign, there's also a cool roguelike mode if you want to test your strength. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name (PS5, PS4)An interquel set between the events of Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Like a Dragon Gaiden is a short and action-heavy detour from the turn-based RPG games starring Ichiban Kasuga. If you prefer old-school Yakuza, then you'll get a kick out of this spin-off, which once again stars Kazuma Kiryu in a leading role. There's a fun story here, a fighting style to master that revolves around the use of cool gadgets, and an ending that'll leave you in tears. Atlas Fallen: Reign Of Sand (PS5)While it was one of the more forgettable action games of 2023, Atlas Fallen is definitely worth checking out if you're looking for something to try out between your commitment to new game releases. The Reign of Sand update helped fine-tune Atlas Fallen's gameplay, as it expanded the world, revamped progression, added new quests, overhauled the voice acting, and dropped in a new difficulty mode. SD Gundam Battle Alliance (PS5, PS4)There's nothing cooler than one of the signature mobile suit mechs from the Gundam universe, and if you've been wondering if they could look cute as well, SD Gundam Battle Alliance will answer that question for you. This adorable action-RPG puts you in control of multiple mobile suits, and you'll need to fix an altered history by battling your way through legions of mechs that stand in your way. It's a fun way to experience pivotal moments from the Gundam anime series, and the multiplayer mode is also quite fun in case you're feeling social. Sayonara Wild Hearts (PS4)Motorcycles, sword battles, and skateboarding in a neon-lit world makes for a killer combo, and you can experience all of that in the cult-classic Sayonara Wild Hearts. Not just a fun arcade-inspired game, Sayonara Wild Hearts also pairs its gameplay with a banger of a soundtrack that'll live rent-free in your head long after the end credits have rolled. ANNO: Mutationem (PS5, PS4)Another neon-soaked game to check out this month is ANNO: Mutationem. The action-RPG puts you in the boots of Ann, a one-woman-army on a personal mission to take down sinister mega-corporations and mysterious fringe groups. Orcs Must Die 3 (PS5, PS4)The Orcs Must Die games have been fun entries in the Tower Defense genre, and Orcs Must Die 3 ups the ante by throwing an obscene number of the vile creatures at your fort. Fortunately, you've got an arsenal of weapons, traps, and defenses that you can build, destroying any orcish war machine that dares to cross your borders. Citizen Sleeper (PS5, PS4)With a sequel out on January 31, now is a great time to check out the original Citizen Sleeper. A sci-fi indie adventure inspired by the flexibility and freedom of TTRPGs, it has a great art direction, interesting gameplay mechanics, and an intriguing story. Poker Club (PS4)For the card sharks out there, you can sit down for Poker Club this month. Designed to be an immersive simulation of the popular card game, there are tournaments to enter and a community of online players to face off against. Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings (PS5, PS4)What better way to prepare for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle than by revisiting an Indy classic? 2009's Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings was a pretty sold third-person action game at the time of its release on PS2, and this new version comes with up-rendered visuals, rewind, quick save, and custom video filters. MediEvil 2 (PS5, PS4)Finally, you can get Medievil on some asses with the return of Sir Daniel Fortesque. Following the success of the first game, MediEvil 2 was a fun sequel that allowed you to wield all manner of ye olde melee weapons--and the occasional chicken drumstick--against foul enemies, solve puzzles, and chuckle at some ghoulish humor along the way.

  • New city builder and grand strategy game imagines war blimps in alternate 20th-century setting
    www.polygon.com
In 2021, the team at Overseer Games had an idea: What if they merged two genres for their next project? That is how Kaiserpunk, an upcoming city builder and grand strategy game set in an alternate early 20th century, came to be.Set for a Feb. 27 release, Kaiserpunk has had a long road to launch day. According to the devs, there are a lot of challenges that come with mixing genres. Picture a Civilization game, but you start out by placing individual buildings while ensuring optimal workflow. Then you have to connect them all with roads in order for them to work oh, and make sure they have the necessary workforce assigned. Do all of this while keeping an eye on whats happening around your settlement and planning out your strategy for interacting with the rest of the world. Then, eventually, you switch focus to the global scale. As far as I know, I havent found any game that did these specific two genres, Mario Mihokovic, co-founder and CEO of Overseer Games, told Polygon on a call from the teams office in Croatia. So we didnt have a template It was basically, Go from scratch, try to find out what works. We were in prototype phase for over a year and a half, basically imagining how thats going to work, testing. We basically did a lot of mistakes along the way.In the interview, Mihokovic discussed everything from the challenges Overseers team of 11 developers (and a handful of contractors for specific tasks) faced when creating the game to the possibilities the alternate 20th-century setting allowed and how to balance a cross-genre game.[Ed. note: This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.]Polygon: Why create a city builder and grand strategy crossover game?Mario Mihokovic: First of all, because we like to complicate things. [laughs]Most of us are really big fans of city-builder games games that do not necessarily mean some kind of direct fighting, violence, or anything. We wanted to try to do something that requires more thinking, strategizing, creating a plan far in advance, and then looking at how that actually plays out through the year in game years, of course. Its a good test for the way you think, the way you anticipate things.Every time we played city builders, we always felt theres something missing once you do that within your city or your small colony or whatnot youre basically done. So the only thing you need to do is rinse and repeat all of that until you reach all of the possible goals the game has set up for you. What if you do all of that, and then you get the chance to make a carbon copy of your success on the local level on the global level. Would that work? It was an interesting question, because sometimes some things that work perfectly on a local level will actually not work on a global level at all, because its a different situation. But we wanted to see how would players handle that. How did you as a development team handle the merging of the two genres? You mentioned there were a lot of mistakes made along the way.We realized whats not going to work, and whats going to be the needed balance between grand strategy elements and city-builder elements. Because one thing we also realized is that a city builder is a relatively complex type of game and grand strategy if you look at, like, Hearts of Iron its the same thing, its a very complex thing. So if you merge two very complex genres, youre going to get yourself in a problem, because youre going to need a manual with 10,000 pages to learn how to play.So we basically had to make a decision how far are we going to go in this second genre? So its not as in-depth as Hearts of Iron, but its not an afterthought theres a very clear usability, and you have to do global things in order to complete the game. How does the global level of the game work?Every faction has one big, major hub that you create, and then in other regions that you gain control over, you need to decide what youre going to do there. Youre not going to build another city again, because, in our opinion, that would mean duplicating the same job. You need to imagine what youre going to do with that region, so you build the improvements in that region. You develop that region in a more global manner. You have basically a similar set of challenges [as building your hub], but on a completely different scale and different ways to achieve that. People mainly see it as, Its my chance to exert global dominance and conquer the world. That is part of it, its possible to do that I assume that at least 50% of players will actually pursue that. But global dominance is not the only way. You can achieve [your objective] without making a single army or conquering anything. Thats not the point. You dont have to do that. It is the fastest way, but not the easiest way. People will think its the easiest way because its going to start the easiest, but thats not how its going to play out. Waging constant war on the global scale thats going to be very complicated and harder the further you go. So there are other ways. You can use trade and diplomacy, and organize alliances. You can exert your influence in a different manner. Thats going to be, actually, easier, but its going to require much more forward thinking than just like, Im gonna do what I feel like today. Thats not gonna work, because in diplomacy, you need to take in account what everybody else is doing, all other factions whats their policies, how theyre organizing their society, how theyre going to react to your actions.Where did the concept for the game and the name Kaiserpunk come from?Well, basically because of the era. Kaiserpunk is set in an alternative timeline. In our timeline, that would roughly be equivalent to around 1918 to 1950, around 30-40 years in our time. Because the game is generally set in that, like, Roaring 20s time, like German noir years of the early 20s is something that it looked like. It described it pretty well. And punk basically was added simply because the game has some fantasy elements not like dragons or something like that, not like that. Im going to give a specific example. Since this is alternative history, the entire technological development does not have to follow what happened in our reality. So youre going to have specific equipment, buildings, cars, and tanks from exactly 1918, because thats the year our reality and our [in-game] alternate reality converged. After that, it starts to differ. So in our reality, the pace of technology when something was invented was influenced by when the Second World War started. In our [in-game] reality, the First World War simply never stopped, and it caused the entirety of all world nations to crumble after a while. So basically, build all nations from scratch. You have cultural heritages, you have links to the previous nations in the sense of how everything looks, the language, the appearance of buildings, units, and everything. But thats it. Thats all the connection there is. And then you build from it again. You have some technologies in Kaiserpunk that actually didnt exist in our reality. For example, youre gonna have war blimps. So that was actually a prototype it was created in our reality, but it never went anywhere beyond the prototype, because it wasnt needed. War stopped. There was a pause until the Second World War, and then they created big bombers and new technology for World War II. [In-game], war never stopped, so the need to introduce new weapons to try to get some edge never stopped. Like bombing raids, you can do only with blimps, because planes dont exist yet. There are a couple of things like that in Kaiserpunk. I know some people will not actually like it. Some thought its very cringy or whatever, but in our mind, it actually describes pretty well what the game is all about early 20s mechanical things, technological breakthroughs in the modern era, and punk as an homage to a part of history that we never actually experienced. How much of these so-called fantasy elements came from knowledge that the team had of these prototypes, and how much of it was researching to find these things that could be added? There was quite a lot of research. We had a little bit of advantage because, by profession myself, Im a history teacher. I switched to another career very, very early on, but I have a huge passion for history itself. I actually went to school and college and university for that. And we have another history guy in the company as well. So we have two of us. So basically, majority of general knowledge where we should seek these things came from us.We knew about this weird story, something that was rumored or wasnt certain that existed, but there are some schematics. And so that was actually then given to all the other guys. Then everybody basically did their homework. There are enormous amounts of things we found out about what that era looked like, and we took some pieces from it that looked like the most feasible things to do. Because it had to be, even if prototypes, developed up to certain levels so you can actually make models of it and know how it should probably work. So we wanted to keep it a little bit realistic. What has been the hardest thing to do in the development phase?Squeeze it all in one game. I mean, seriously, early on we actually believed, Ten to 15 features from grand strategy? Its not that big of a deal, its going to work fine. It doesnt, because grand strategy has very specific rules how they work to make it sensible. And if you expand every feature a little bit in the grand strategy part, then you get a much larger thing than what you hoped for and its a problem. We decided to skip the turn-based approach, which is much better for the fluency of the game itself. That works pretty well, but its very complicated to merge. If the time passes in the same way on the global map and then your local map, its not easy to combine it. Because, when you start developing your city in the first two to four hours of the game, you will probably spend most of your time in local map, organizing your own production chains and setting up variables. You need to actually step out on the global map, but later its going to switch. Youre going to have more things to do on the global map, and youre going to delegate things on the local map more and more.We had to incorporate notifications from global map to local map, because if youre on the local map, you want to be notified if something important is happening on global map. If somebody is setting up an attack against you amassing armies, preparing logistics on your western border youre going to pay attention to that, but if you are currently on the local map, its happening on the global map; you dont see it. So not everybodys going to jump between maps all the time. So we had to make a single notification system that is going to tell you, The messenger came, something is happening there.Thats a lot! How did you balance everything you wanted to add with what you could do in a reasonable amount of time?I wish we had, like, 50 or 100 people, because there are so many ways you can go with it. You can do so many layers in this. We had to, like, smack ourselves, like, Stop it, 500 features is enough. You cant do everything. You cant have 10,000 stories a few hundred is enough. So we had to stop ourselves. You cant physically do all of that. But the theme, when we got into it, its so potent. You can do so many things with it, and were gonna do whatever we can. There are plans, if everything goes well were gonna expand the heck out of it. So many additional angles, so many things you can add. Because its the entire world.

  • A Modern Transformation for a Landmark Building in Austin
    design-milk.com
Located in downtown Austin, 816 Congress is a prominent 20-story high rise built in 1983. IA Interior Architects was tapped to complete the latest round of renovations for the landmark. With a hospitality-focused redesign, the architects created a user-friendly environment that celebrates the essence of the locale. The initial concept was to activate the building for the modern era, while preserving its historical significance because it is on Congress Avenue, says Kendi Sparks, project director at IA Interior Architects. The impact begins at the entrance, where a black ribbon of hot-rolled steel wraps the building, and offers a bold contrast against the facade of gray granite. Once hidden by a colonnade, a column was removed, and it is now a more visible, welcoming portal. To continue the unified theme the design also features a series of arches at the exterior and interior.Significant updates were made to key areas over three floors, transforming the previously dark spaces into an airy, refined setting. There is a unique blend of a West Texas aesthetic and Austins own eclectic character, highlighted via a curated selection of materials and textures.A bespoke stone reception desk, for example, anchors the lobby. With a custom rope installation by local fiber artist Ellen Bruxvoort, the piece is a standout. A suspended illumination feature not only echoes the loops of a cowboys lasso, but is also a nod to the big skies of the Lone Star State. The neutral color palette, inspired by the desert landscape, complements raked plaster, wood, terrazzo, and black metal elements throughout.Retail and coworking-style spaces are on the lower floors, designed for multi-use and to foster collaboration among the tenants. Seamless connections between indoors and out are also emphasized. The revamped courtyard echoes the curve motif and extends the garden experience indoors. A terrace, ideal for events, boasts views of the Texas State Capitol. The new amenity center boasts a range of options for work and recreation activities. This hub includes a breakroom, conferencing areas, and lounge sections with comfortable furnishings. In an enclosed space on the 15th floor, the golf simulator is a favorite of users who want to perfect their swing during the day.The thoughtful renovation enhances the appeal of 816 Congress, with modern and classic touches plus the technology necessary in todays commercial environments. Its inviting, and with the combination of details, feels more like a living room versus a space that is more formal and monotone, Sparks adds. For more information on IA Interior Architects, visit interiorarchitects.com.Photography by Andrea Calo.

  • How to Keep Your Location Data Safe From Security Breaches
    lifehacker.com
At this point, most of us are aware thatthanks to a regular stream of data breaches at companies large and smallat least some of our personal information has inevitably been leaked online. The latest of these involves user location data from ad-serving apps, ranging from Tinder and Grindr to Candy Crush and MyFitnessPal, not to mention VPN apps and various period and pregnancy trackers. The leak is the result of a hack at Gravy Analytics, a data broker that collates location data from across mobile devices (including millions of iPhone and Android users) and sells it to other companies. As TechCrunch reports, the dataset contains more than 30 million location pointsincluding healthcare clinics, military bases, and government buildingsfor devices around the world. Worse, the data could potentially be de-anonymized and used to track the past movements of individuals. The leaked location data was drawn from hundreds of ad-displaying apps. These services obtain information about your device (such as the make and model type and IP address) in a process known as real-time bidding that helps determine which targeted ads you'll see. According to 404 Media, which reported on the Gravy Analytics breach, this may happen without the knowledge of either the user or the app developer. How to protect your location data from future breachesWhile you can't reverse a data breach, you can take steps to protect your location data from the advertisers that collect your data and the brokers that sell it in the future. For internet browsing, an ad blocker like Privacy Badger can prevent ads from loading and displaying on websites and tracking your web activity. On mobile, you'll also want to disable mobile advertising identifiers (MAIDs), the data points that can be used to create a map of your device's movement, and limit app tracking permissions. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has a detailed guide for accomplishing this.Delete add tracking identifiers on AndroidAndroid users can go to Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Ads and tap Delete advertising ID to permanently delete your MAID. You can also audit and revoke app tracking permissions from Settings > Privacy & Security > Privacy Controls > Permission Manager. Delete add tracking identifiers on iPhoneOn iOS, view apps that have access to your ID via Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. Toggle off Allow apps to Request to Track or remove permissions for individual apps. You can also deny permission to track when you install a new app. Finally, disable Apple's targeted ads under Settings > Privacy > Apple Advertising by toggling off Personalized Ads. The Electronic Frontier Foundation also notes that using airplane mode will prevent apps from sending your location to data brokers in real time, so if you are concerned about maintaining privacy en route to a sensitive destination, you should download your maps so you can use navigation while offline.
