Bob Uecker, Baseball Icon and Film and TV Star, Dies at 90
One of the most beloved voices in baseball and pop culture history has died. Bob Uecker was best known as radio play-by-play announceron Milwaukee Brewers baseball games since 1971, although that role eventually brought him to wider prominence inthe worlds of film and television.Sadly, the Brewers announced today that Uecker had passed away. He was 90 years old. A statement released by the Brewers said Uecker had been battling small cell lung cancer for the last few years.Uecker was still the radio broadcaster for the Brewersduring the 2024 season, in whichthe team wonthe National League Central division. Uecker was front and center during the celebration of the division-clinching victory.Prior to his broadcasting career, Uecker was a major leaguer himself.Mostly serving as a backup catcher, he was called up to the Brewers in 1962 and also played for the Cardinals (where he helped win the World Series in 1964), Phillies, and Braves in a six-season career. After his playingdays were over,Uecker rejoined the Brewers organization, this time as their radio broadcaster. He held that job from 1971 until his death. In the 1980s and 90s he also worked many nationally broadcast baseball games, includingseveral World Series. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.In addition to Ueckers work behind the mic for the Brewers, he became a national celebrity and a fixture on television in the 1970s and 80s. He initially garnered wider fame through dozens of appearances on talk shows likeThe Tonight Show Johnny Carson was the one whopopularized Ueckers slightlysarcastic nickname Mr. Baseball and then in a series of popular Miller Lite ads.Ueckers most famous role these daysmight be his work aswisecracking Cleveland play-by-play man Harry Doyle in the trilogy ofMajor League films. Ueckers exasperated calls of the hapless teamsblunders became famous baseball quotes like Juuuusta bit outside, duringa particularly poor pitch from Charlie Sheens Ricky Vaughn.Uecker also spent six seasons as the good-natured patriarch on the ABC sitcomMr. Belvedere. He played George, the head of a Pittsburgh family that has an English butler (played by Christopher Hewett).Ueckers affable, self-deprecating persona made him a great talk show guest and beer pitchman, but he was also a legitimately great broadcaster and storyteller. In recent years, you could listen to his calls of Brewers games on the MLB app,and they were so entertaining even if you didntcare about whether the Brewers won or lost. He will be missed, but some of his legendary calls (both in real gamesandin fictional ones) will live on forever.Get our free mobile app80s Movies That Could Never Be Made TodayFiled Under: Major League, RIPCategories: R.I.P., TV News

The former steelworks of a power plant are integrated with organically-shaped greenhouse pavilions
Submitted by WA ContentsThe former steelworks of a power plant are integrated with organically-shaped greenhouse pavilionsChina Architecture News - Jan 16, 2025 - 14:11 html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd"The former steelworks of a power plant were integrated with organically-shaped greenhouse pavilions to establish the twin dualities of industry, nature, tradition, and the future.Named Expo Cultural Park Greenhouse, the 41,000-square-metre building was designed by Vienna-based architecture firm Delugan Meissl Associated Architects (DMAA).Entrance pathReaching at 35 meters in height, the greenhouse complex is located in the center of Pudong, a sparsely populated industrial enclave that has developed into one of Asia's most breathtaking high-rise skylines. As Delugan Meissl Associated Architects explained, the inner-city leisure area was once home to a steel mill and a coal-fired power station before being transformed into the Expo Cultural Park. After that, it was renovated to serve as Expo 2010's site.FacadeThe steel framework of a former industrial hall served as a geometric superstructure for the new Greenhouse Garden project, which was further complemented with naturally curved pavements."The zeitgeist has shifted towards recognizing nature as the essential basis of our living environment," said DMAA."And nature has also moved to the heart of architecture. In recent years, as it has repeatedly addressed the specific task of greenhouse design, we have developed extensive technical and cultural knowhow."Exterior evening"With a population of 23 million, the megacity of Shanghai is the focal point of Chinas urban and internati- onal development.""But the Shanghai Region is also directly threatened by the consequences of unlimited growth and climate change. Given biting smogs, water shortages, and rising temperatures, the countrys leaders are looking for solutions that take the form of radical largescale steps steps that should not only preserve natural habitats but also steer Chinas technological and economic efforts in a sustainable direction," said the firm.Exterior parkfrontThe decision by the municipal administration to transform such a large, centrally located plot of land into a first-rate recreational area is unmistakable proof of the general trend toward more intensive planting of Shanghai's core urban zones. Shanghai is one of the world's largest cities with a subtropical climate. The creation of a zero-energy building was one of the project's specific goals because greenhouses typically use a lot of energy. This was accomplished by using single glazing, which was chosen since simulative studies indicated that double glazing would be less energy efficient because the impact of the artificial lighting needed by the plants would more than offset the reduction in heat loss.Exterior parkviewThe studio modified the opening windows in the perforated roof to allow for the passive cooling and natural ventilation that produce the ideal climate for the particular plants. In addition to providing cooling, a pool next to the pavilions uses photovoltaic panels situated just below its surface to power the greenhouse. With its sandy and rocky terrain, the first pavilion replicates the extreme aridity of the desert and represents the home of drought-tolerant yet endangered plants on every continent. The final pavilion's vertical flower beds provide room for traveling exhibitions, while the second pavilion showcases the rainforest's tropical vegetation.Entrance pavilionAn overview of the entire park and the structures that make up the periphery of the surrounding urban fabric may be seen from the terrace above the pavilions. A sizable circular area beneath the listed steel structure and between the three pavilions and the entrance building unifies the proposal with the natural surroundings. The greenhouses' internal and external passageways provide new attributes. Visitors actively navigate this network, moving through each spatial sequence and interacting with the constructed material in a certain way.Interior desertThese visitors are revealed by glazed parapets, and their movement is accelerated or decelerated by mild gradients. The difference in water levels between desert and tropical flora is a natural phenomenon, but it also provides a global political viewpoint because of the concerns about future water supplies brought up by climate change. In this sense, the facade's naturally flowing shape serves as a leitmotif for both the internal structure and the new, flexible human-nature relationship.Interior tropical forest pathwayInterior tropical forestBirdviewBirdview top nightSketchSite planFirst level floor planSecond level floor planThird level floor planRoof floor planDelugan Meissl Associated Architects (DMAA) was established in 1993 by Delugan and Elke Delugan-Meissl. Reprieve for Fosters Whitechapel tower as councillors ignore officers call for refusal
Patel Taylors plans for 35-storey Isle of Dogs tower also given council backingFoster & Partners' revised plans for the 2-6 Commercial street scheme in Whitechapel1/2show captionA decision on a long-delayed office tower in Whitechapel designed by Foster & Partners has been deferred for a second time after councillors ignored the advice of planning officers to reject the proposals. In the latest twist to plans which have been on the books since 2018, six Tower Hamlets councillors said they were minded to approve the 17-storey scheme at 2-6 Commercial Street, with one abstention.A final decision will now be taken at a future committee meeting to allow planning officers to assess issues raised at the meeting and draw up planning conditions in a fresh report. The 41,000sq m proposals were on the agenda for the councils planning committee last month, also with a recommendation to refuse, but a decision was deferred to allow a site visit, which took place on 17 December.Councillors said in yesterday evenings committee meeting that the scheme would be an effective use of the site, which is currently a car park, and would reduce anti-social behaviour in the area including alleged drug dealing activity.Previous Foster & Partners proposals for the site, which were rejected in 2021They also said that despite the site not being located in a designated tall building zone, the impact of the buildings height would be lessened as it was close to several existing tall buildings. The scheme was a redesign of a previous application for the site designed by Foster & Partners for a shorter, 14-storey building that was rejected in 2021 due to concerns over its height and impact on nearby heritage assets.Although taller, the new proposals would retain the frontage of an existing building on the site while its massing would be stepped back compared to the original application.Meanwhile, councillors voted to back the officers recommendation to approve a 35-storey residential building designed by Patel Taylor at the same committee meeting. The 1 Selsdon Way scheme on the Isle of Dogs will see the demolition of an existing office building and the construction of 307 homes, 35% of which will be affordable. It will take the form of a four-storey podium topped by a slender triangular tower faced with a yellow-coloured brick cladding.Patel Taylors proposals for 1 Selsdon Way were approved yesterday evening

Hollaway Studios Kent wetlands campus for Brompton bikes approved
Bromptons proposed 100 million headquarters in Ashford, Kent, secured the backing of Ashford Borough Councils planning committee last night (15 January). Councillors voted by 10 to two in favour of the scheme, which is backed by developer Quinn Estates. If built, the proposals would deliver a new factory, 46,000m2 of office space, a museum and wetlands on a 40ha site just south of Ashford town centre and RSHPs Ashford Designer Outlet, completed in 2001.However, Bromptons accounts for the year ending March 2024 have potentially put the scheme in doubt. Companies House filings showed profits at the west London-based business collapsed by more than 99 per cent, dropping from 10.7 million to 4,602 since March 2023.AdvertisementPlanning officers in Ashford, Kent, had recommended the project for approval days after The Guardian reported that the Brompton HQ scheme had been paused. The same report said Brompton had canceled dividends to shareholders as a result of the fall in profit.Speaking at the committee, Brompton CEO Will Butler-Adams said its plans for Ashford were so the business which he admitted had fallen to zero profitability could find its real home. He added that the company had moved five times in its 50 years and that moving was not easy.Butler-Adams continued: We looked at Ashford, Manchester, Birmingham right across the UK and it was Ashford that [] stood above the rest.Ashfords councillors approved the proposal after debating the flood risk of the development, which planning officers said would provide a net gain of 400 cubic meters of compensatory storage area for floodwater. Planning officers had recommended the project.Hollaway Studios designs for the cycle manufacturer were first shown off in 2022. The scheme includes new structure on stilts floating 2.2m above rewilded greenfield land, with room for increasing Bromptons 850 staff to as many as 1,500.AdvertisementThe scheme features no car parking, but has a circular walking and cycle path, which, according to Hollaway, will provide both expansive views of the site and multisensory experiences of the factory.Hollaway added that the campus would be carbon-neutral and use natural light and air flows, as well as using wind and solar power to contribute to its energy demands.Speaking to the AJ following approval, Hollaway told the AJ: This is a real milestone for Brompton and Hollaway Studio. Weve been working closely with this innovative client for the last few years to bring this application to committee and in the process we have managed to overcome many challenges. The practice continued: The project allows for development in a flood zone 3, zero parking and is situated in a green corridor. All of these aspects required innovative design solutions and, working with a great team, weve managed to overcome. We very much look forward, in time, to continuing to work with Brompton in the next steps to realise this project.Founded in 1976, Brompton specialises in compact, foldable bikes and is now the largest bicycle manufacturer in the UK. It has said the new building will be perfectly located between London and Paris two of its biggest markets.Brompton has been contacted for comment.

Quick tips for streaming Spanish Copa Del Rey matches using a VPNWith four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming Spanish Copa Del Rey matches may vary.If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option. If you're having trouble getting the game after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location. All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.Remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommendBrave.

Climate Action Now Threatened by Powerful Forces, Biden Warns
January 16, 20253 min readPowerful Forces Threaten Climate Action, Biden WarnsIn his farewell address, President Biden warned that a powerful oligarchy could undo four years of progress on climate policyBy Scott Waldman & E&E News President Joe Biden speaks from the Oval Office of the White House as he gives his farewell address Wednesday. Mandel Ngan - Pool/Getty ImagesCLIMATEWIRE | President Joe Biden used the first half of his 17-minute farewell address Wednesday night to tout his achievements over the past four years, highlighting infrastructure and climate legislation that created new jobs across the country. Then it got dark.Speaking from the Oval Office, Biden warned that a powerful oligarchy threatens U.S. democracy and is working to diminish and destroy his climate policy. He said climate change was among the most dire threats facing the country and that he was concerned about the fate of his landmark climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act. The law included almost $400 billion in clean energy spending which President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to claw back.On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. We've proven we don't have to choose between protecting the environment and growing the economy, we're doing both, Biden said. The powerful forces want to wield their unchecked influence to eliminate the steps we've taken to tackle the climate crisis, to serve their own interest for power and profit.Biden never named Trump directly. But he blamed a fog of misinformation for misleading the American people. The free press was crumbling, he said. Social media fact-checkers have been eliminated, he said referencing tech giant Meta's recent announcement that it would no longer use fact-checkers.I'm equally concerned about the potential rise of a tech industrial complex that could pose real dangers for our country as well, Biden said. Americans are being buried under an avalanche of misinformation and disinformation, enabling the abuse of power.Bidens address made it clear that he is concerned his climate legacy is under threat. He oversaw the most aggressive climate plan in U.S. history and some of its impacts, like boosting clean energy manufacturing and electric vehicles, will likely survive the Trump administration. But Bidens climate efforts will also now face a four-year frontal assault. Trump wants to repeal or weaken as much of the Inflation Reduction Act as possible, and hell begin targeting regulations on fossil fuels with an expected flurry of executive orders as soon as he takes office.Gone will be the president who frequently called climate change an existential threat. Seated at the Resolute desk will be a president who promises to drill, baby, drill.Trump has promised that the government's support of EVs is now over. He will transform a White House now focused on getting all federal agencies to consider climate change into one determined to ramp up fossil fuel production as quickly as possible. And while Biden increased the number of federal employees focused on climate change, carbon emissions reductions and environmental justice, Trumps incoming Cabinet officials have promised to purge them.In the final moments of his Oval Office speech, just days away from completing nearly a half-century in public office, Biden ended with a small note of hope. After 50 years of public service, I give you my word, I still believe in the idea for which this nation stands, where the strengths of our institutions and the character of our people matter and must endure, he said. Now it's your turn to stand guard.Reprinted from E&E News with permission from POLITICO, LLC. Copyright 2025. E&E News provides essential news for energy and environment professionals.

Hideki Kamiya calls out "sh**ty leakers" in wake of Switch 2 reveal
Hideki Kamiya calls out "sh**ty leakers" in wake of Switch 2 reveal"They need to be crushed as soon as possible."Image credit: Daniel Robson News by Ed Nightingale Deputy News Editor Published on Jan. 16, 2025 Hideki Kamiya has called out "shitty leakers" in the wake of Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal, stating they "should be cursed".Earlier today Nintendo finally revealed its Switch 2 console after months of leaks and speculation.Following the reveal, Kamiya (game designer of Okami, Bayonetta, Devil May Cry and more) took to social media to express his frustration towards those who leaked Switch 2 information ahead of the official reveal.Nintendo Switch 2 First-look trailerWatch on YouTube"I hope that all of the people who leaked Switch 2 information/those who helped leak it will be cursed for the rest of their lives to always have poop on the soles of their shoes when they get home," he began, jokingly enough (via machine translation).Kamiya referred back to the surprise reveal of an Okami sequel in development from last year's The Game Awards. "Now that I've enjoyed the surprise announcement of Okami with all the users, I truly believe that... all those damn leakers should be cursed," he said.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. He continued, referring to theoretical leakers as "the worst of scum"."The shitty leaker only acts for his own pleasure and self-satisfaction, not only is he not contributing to anyone's benefit, he is incurring all sorts of opportunity losses, and has done nothing to be proud of in front of others," he said. "He is the worst of scum, so he should be covered in shit from head to toe and thrown out of the atmosphere... and then stop thinking and wander forever."He concluded the thread with a further vent of frustration."These damn leakers are in a position of responsibility where they have access to information that only a very select few know, yet what they do is nothing more than an expression of a filthy desire for approval that lacks a shred of rationality; they are shameful people, so it is not the manufacturers whose secrets have been exposed who should be blamed, but these damn people, and they need to be crushed as soon as possible," he said. The outspoken Kamiya is known for his hot takes on social media, yet while his thread is lighthearted to begin with, there appears to be an undercurrent of genuine annoyance.Indeed, leaks have become an issue across the industry. In recent years, many major releases - from Nintendo and other studios - have been leaked ahead of release. This week, former Nintendo staff said the company had likely been "very, very, upset" by Switch 2 leaks, due to their "disruptive impact".Kamiya's Okami sequel, thankfully, didn't leak before its reveal. It's being developed by his new studio Clovers. The Switch 2 is still without a firm release date, but was finally announced earlier today along with a tease of a new Mario Kart game.
