Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games hereThe Fortnite x Godzilla collaboration brings a new in-game event that will last for a week or two. During this time, players will be able to transform into the legendary monster and use its abilities to get a Victory Royale. On top of this, several new cosmetic items are available in the game, including Kong and Mechagodzilla, which can be purchased from the Item Shop. While this new gameplay content is certainly interesting, many players are wondering if there will be a Godzilla live event in Fortnite. If you are curious about it as well, this article explains everything you need to know. When will the Fortnite x Godzilla event start?Godzilla drops in Fortnite on January 17 at 9 AM Eastern Time. This marks the beginning of an in-game event, meaning that Epic Games will enable new content. However, this is not to be confused with a live event, which usually lasts for 10 minutes. While there have been rumors about a live event, Epic hasnt confirmed anything. Furthermore, nothing has been leaked about it as well.Considering the situation, its safe to say that there will be no Godzilla live event in Fortnite. This will simply be an in-game event, which will bring new gameplay features, such as the Godzilla transformation. This is almost identical to the Doctor Doom event, which allowed players to transform into the Marvel villain by interacting with a cauldron on the floating island.Godzilla will not have a Fortnite live event this season. Image by VideoGamerWhile Epic Games may announce a Godzilla live event later this season, its unlikely to happen. With the season ending on February 21, the game developer will probably focus on wrapping it up and teasing the next one. Due to this, there is a small chance that we will get a live event on the last day of Chapter 6 Season 1. • A Lot of Americans Are Googling What Is Oligarchy? After Bidens Farewell Speech | The outgoing president warned of the growing dominance of a small, monied elite.
    gizmodo.com
President Joe Biden used his farewell speech Wednesday to call out what he referred to as a nascent oligarchy in the United States. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Google Analytics appears to show that a lot of Americans had no idea what he was talking about. Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power, and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedoms and a fair shot for everyone to get ahead, Biden said, in his address. We see the consequences all across America. Biden compared todays oligarchs to those who ran the country during the 19th century. More than a century ago, the American people stood up to the robber barons back then and busted the trusts, he said. They didnt punish the wealthy. They just made the wealthy play by the rules everybody else had. Biden added that creating labor rights for the public helped put us on the path to building the largest middle class, the most prosperous century any nation the world has ever seen. He concluded: Weve got to do that again. Confounded by Bidens use of the term oligarchy, Google search analytics shows there was a surge of searches for oligarchy meaning and oligarchy definition. Of the top five states where searches for the term were highest, three of them (Nebraska, Iowa, and Wyoming) were states that went for Trump during the election. In an homage to Eisenhowers parting address, Biden also used his speech to call out what he called a tech-industrial complex, which he said represented a dangerous concentration of technology, power and wealth in the hands of the very few. Americans are being buried under an avalanche of misinformation and disinformation enabling the abuse of power, the President said. The free press is crumbling. Editors are disappearing. Social media is giving up on fact-checking. The truth is smothered by lies told for power and for profit. Surely the fact that Silicon Valleys tech tycoons helped Trump win had some influence over Bidens decision to include this in his speech.Theres no telling whether the people who voted for Trump are the same people who have never heard of oligarchy, though if there is a crossover between those two demographics it would make sense. The Trump campaign was not particularly quiet about the fact that it planned to institute plans and policies specifically designed to benefit the wealthy while throwing the rest of America under the bus. Somehow, 50 percent of the electorate voted for him anyway. Now that Trumps administration is coming into view, its clear that it will be one of the most pro-wealthy administrations in the history of the country. Trump himself is a billionaire, as is his new political wingman, Elon Musk. Vivek Ramaswamy, Musks supposed partner for DOGEthe organization designed to wreck the federal governmentis also a billionaire, as are Trumps nominees to lead the Department of Education, the Commerce Department, the Department of the Interior, the Treasury, and NASA. Since being elected, those close to Trump have openly advocated for policies that would benefit the wealthy at the expense of the rest of us. In their pursuit of a balanced federal budget, rightwingers have suggested making cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and other federal programs designed to distribute benefits to Americans. At the same time, Trump has promised to lower taxes on the wealthya move that would paradoxically add trillions to the deficit. Trump has also suggested ending taxes on Social Security benefits, which would dry up the programs revenues, thus threatening a program that some 79 percent of Americans believe should not be reduced in any way.

  • Despite getting nuked, Diablo 4's Spiritborn is still one of the strongest classes going into Season 7
    www.vg247.com
No Stopping the BornDespite getting nuked, Diablo 4's Spiritborn is still one of the strongest classes going into Season 7The glory days of the Spiritborn's utter dominance in Diablo 4 may be about to be over, but it's looking like the new class will still be among the strongest.Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment. News by Sherif Saed Contributing Editor Published on Jan. 17, 2025 We pretty much know everything there is to know about Diablo 4s Season of Witchcraft, the games upcoming seventh season. Blizzard recently revealed all the new content, and major changes coming to the game with the new season.Last night, the Diablo team hosted its first livestream of the year to dig a little deeper into some of the finer details on class balance, gameplay tweaks, and many of the updates made since the December PTR.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Class rebalance is always one of the most interesting aspects about any new Diablo 4 season. Season of Witchcraft is no different, and its especially true in this case because it's the first season where the new Spiritborn class is going to see a few major changes. The Spiritborn is the class introduced with the Vessel of Hatred expansion. Its launch coincided with the start of Season 6, so the class hadnt yet spent enough time in players hands to justify any big changes to how it plays.Once people started playing with it, however, it became clear that it was far and away that seasons most powerful class. Even setting aside the silly exploits players took advantage of early on (before they got fixed), the sheer power of the Spiritborns various builds simply put it a tier above the rest.Rather than alter that meta in the middle of the season, Blizzard decided to allow players to have their fun with the Spiritborn, but warned that much of what players relied on to create their room-clearing builds will be adjusted in Season 7.Well, were now days away from the end of Season 6 and the beginning of Season 7, and the Spiritborn has indeed had much of its power stripped away. The only surprise? Its still looking like one of the most powerful classes! To see this content please enable targeting cookies. The Spiritborn was already strong in the patch 2.1 PTR, and Blizzard hasnt made major changes to that iteration - apart from fixing some unintended synergies that caused the power spikes of Season 6. That said, Razor Wings builds will have a new Unique to play with, as well as a new Aspect that should make that build more viable. On the opposite end of that, the Sorcerer has emerged as the weakest class in the Season 7 PTR, so Blizzard buffed a bunch of its passives. Searing Heat, and Icefall are two Legendary Paragon nodes that got some love, too, mainly to make them compatible with a wider range of builds. Sorcerers are also getting two Uniques this season that seem to be designed for lightning builds.Elsewhere in the patch, other classes have seen a few tweaks of their own. The Druid has seen what could be its most impactful change yet. The class early game has traditionally been characterised by a slow regeneration of resource. Season 7 smoothes out that curve, in part thanks to some updates to Spirit Boon. Blurred Beast has been reworked (again) to help with shred builds, too.The Barbarians Hammer of the Ancients has been buffed yet again, which should nicely complement the power enabled by the new Unique chest added to the game - for all your earthquake build needs. Whirlwind has also seen some numeric buffs. For all the nitty gritty details, check out the 2.1.0 patch notes on the official blog. Season of Witchcraft begins Tuesday, January 21.

  • Enterprises need to make better choices to reduce GenAI emissions
    www.computerweekly.com
The mounting environmental impacts of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) systems can be significantly reduced if businesses choose the right model for their use cases and implement sustainable practices throughout its lifecycle, according to Capgemini Research Institute.Capgeminis Developing sustainable GenAI report noted that, for the latest generative pre-training transformer (GPT) models, the training alone is roughly equivalent to the yearly energy consumption of 5,000 US homes, with an equal or greater amount of energy being needed to then run the model operationally in a business context. This meant one query to a large language model (LLM) required 10 times as much electricity than a Google search. It added that, in the span of a year, the number of organisations which have integrated GenAI into their products and services has gone up from 6% to 24%. Moreover, it estimated that by 2026, GenAI would account for 4.8% of an organisations total greenhouse gas emissions, up from the current rate of 2.6%.Capgemini also said that using a LLM to run an inference of 20 to 50 queries uses about 500ml of water each time, and that GenAI could create between 1.2 to fivemillion metric tons of e-waste by 2030; around 1,000 times more e-waste than was produced in 2023.The surge in energy consumption driven by generative AI is leading to a significant increase in emissions, which are expected to nearly double as a share of organisational carbon footprints within two years, said Vincent Charpiot, head of Capgeminis Group Sustainability Business Accelerator. It is urgent for businesses to embed sustainability into their AI strategies.By leveraging smaller models, renewable energy, and transparent practices from AI and GenAI vendors, we can mitigate environmental impacts while harnessing AI to drive both innovation and sustainability. From the production of graphics processing units which requires mining rare earth metals to training the models to run enormous datacentres, all of these steps contribute significantly to the technologys environmental impact. For most organisations, the use of GenAI products and services fall under their Scope 3 emissions referring to indirect greenhouse gas emissions that occur outside of a companys operations, but that are still a result of their activities. However, Capgemini said making the right choices at various stages of a models lifecycle including choosing hardware, model architecture, power source for datacentres and its ultimate use case can significantly bring down the environmental impact. It added that companies should consider whether they even need energy-intensive GenAI technologies in cases where they could use more resource-efficient models for a similar result.Everybody wants to do something with generative AI, but a lot of times you dont even need it, said Vishal Singhvi, director of generative AI at Microsoft. You can do this very well with your traditional AI, which consumes significantly less compute power and workloads.Organisations should therefore take into account whether tasks can be completed using small language models (SLMs) instead, which are trained with smaller and more specific datasets compared with a LLM.Capgemini said this can not only significantly reduce emissions, but also cost. According to Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI: Smaller models mean the applications are less costly to run and, more importantly, if you have a model that is 100 times smaller, you can call it 100 times more for the same cost, bringing a little more intelligence to your application with each call. For Mauli Tikkiwal, a board member at UK-based Orchard Hill College and Academy Trust, its vital that organisations are aware of how their use of GenAI is contributing to negative environmental impacts. First, you must identify the impact so you can track and reduce it, she said. However, while monitoring and tracking emissions is paramount, only 14% of those surveyed by Capgemini said their companies measure and track their GenAI footprint.Three-quarters of the executives cited limited transparency from suppliers as a challenge in measuring environmental impact. They expect the tech sector to lead efforts in facilitating that goal, the report said.Read more about AI and the environmentAssessing the sustainability of cloud AI services: Using AI-optimised hardware and minimising data movements are some of the ways to mitigate the environmental impact of using cloud AI platforms. How datacentres can turn the tide on carbon emissions: Operators have revealed troubling increases in their carbon emissions of late, but could these have been prevented?UK government seeks AI innovators to support clean energy transition and pursuit of net zero by 2050: The UK government has launched the second round of the Manchester Prize, which is geared towards using artificial intelligence technologies to assist with the clean energy transition.Despite these trends, Capgemini highlighted how some tech firms are approaching the technology sustainably. It noted, for example, that Nvidias latest GPUs are 30 times more efficient than their previous iterations; that MIT spin-off startup LiquidAI has developed adaptive and less energy-hungry algorithm techniques; and that Microsoft has introduced energy-monitoring features in its LLMs.It further highlighted a deal signed by Meta to purchase geothermal energy to provide power to its US datacentres, as well as Google Carbon Sense Suite, which is a collection of features that makes it easy to accurately report your carbon emissions, and reduce them.During the AI Summit London in June 2024, sustainability experts said that although the technology can be deployed in a number of ways to help companies become more environmentally sustainable, there must be a recognition of the clearly negative impacts it is currently having on the planet. They said that while it could help companies better manage their Scope 3 emissions by linking up data sources and making them more legible, these emissions can be difficult to track given how differently organisations collect, manage and share their data.

  • The FBI forced China-backed malware infecting US computers to self-destruct
    www.techspot.com
In a nutshell: PlugX, a malware family designed to remotely control infected machines, is a persistent threat that's existed since 2008. A specific variant of this Remote Access Trojan was recently targeted and essentially wiped off the internet by the FBI and a few international partners. The Justice Department and the FBI recently announced a multi-month operation that took down a variant of the PlugX family of malware. The malicious tool was developed by a hacking team known as "Mustang Panda," the FBI said, with the entire operation being sponsored and funded by Chinese authorities. The malware was designed to infiltrate, infect, and control thousands of PCs and networks around the world.Mustang Panda has been active since at least 2014, the recently unveiled FBI affidavit said. The group targeted government and private business organizations based in the US, Europe, and Asia, along with a few Chinese dissident groups. Owners of systems infected by PlugX are usually unaware of the ongoing infection, which is why the recent self-destruct operation delivered a significant blow against the threat. The US agency leveraged its partnership with French law enforcement authorities, and France-based cyber-security company Sekoia.io. Sekoia researchers were successful in discovering a feature hidden within PlugX's code, which could receive a "self-destruct" instruction from its command-and-control (C2) server. The C2 IP address was hard-coded in the malware, so the FBI was able to effectively seize the entire system. The PlugX family of Remote Access Trojans is known for its extensive ability to execute commands coming from remote C2 servers. Cyber-criminals can easily extract relevant machine information from the infected systems, capture the screen, send keyboard and mouse events, reboot the system, manage services and the Windows Registry, and more.Starting in August 2024, the FBI and the Justice Department obtained nine warrants required to organize the PlugX self-destruction operation. The judge authorized the deletion of the PlugX infection from approximately 4,258 Windows PCs and networks based in the US, and the operation was concluded earlier this month. // Related StoriesFurthermore, the FBI got in touch with the actual US victims of the RAT malware through their respective internet service providers. According to Jacqueline Romero, US Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, this long-term PlugX infection involving thousands of computers shows how reckless and aggressive Chinese-sponsored hackers are. US authorities were able to effectively deal with this threat thanks to an international "whole-of-society" approach to protecting US cyber-security.
