  • Understanding The Physics-Aware Systems That Nvidia Is Working On
    www.forbes.com
SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 18: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang delivers a keynote address during the ... [+] Nvidia GTC Artificial Intelligence Conference at SAP Center on March 18, 2024 in San Jose, California. The developer conference is expected to highlight new chip, software, and AI processor technology. (Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)Getty ImagesAs just one part of what came out of this years CES earlier this month, Nvidia announced its development of something called Nvidia Cosmos. The name itself doesnt tell you a whole lot, invoking something broad the celestial sky, or the cosmologies that we humans tell ourselves to explain the origins of everything. So what is this system?Nvidia defines Cosmos as a platform of state-of-the-art generative world foundation models, and defines world foundation models as neural networks that simulate real world environments, and predict accurate outcomes based on text, image or video input.World models, spokespersons explain, understand the physics of the real world. They support the development of robotic systems and autonomous vehicles, and other physical structures that can follow the rules of the road, or the requirements of a workspace. In a way, these are the engines for the advent of physical entities that will think, reason, move and eventually live like humans.MORE FOR YOUA Tech GlossaryNvidia people also detail other aspects of Nvidia Cosmos, including advanced tokenizers that help split higher-level data into usable pieces. For reference, heres how ChatGPT describes an advanced tokenizer: Advanced tokenizers go beyond simple whitespace or rule-based segmentation to produce subword, byte-level, or hybrid segments that better handle rare words, multilingual text, and domain-specific vocabulary. These smart tokenizers are a crucial foundation for modern NLP systems, enabling models to scale to massive datasets and diverse linguistic inputs. These models will be available under an open license, to help developers work on whatever theyre making. A Jan. Nvidia press release explains:Physical AI models are costly to develop, and require vast amounts of real-world data and testing. Cosmos world foundation models, or WFMs, offer developers an easy way to generate massive amounts of photoreal, physics-based synthetic data to train and evaluate their existing models.Notwithstanding understandable concerns about jailbreaking and hacks, companies will likely be excited about having this opportunity to build on what the leading U.S. tech company has created. Then there is the process of data curation, where Nvidia NeMo will provide an accelerated process.Anyway, TLDR: These are physics-aware systems. They sound like crucial pieces of applications that will bring AI to walk among us, to act on our lives, instead of just being siloed in a computer somewhere. What will our robot friends look like? And how will we treat them, and they us? These are the kinds of questions that we are going to have to consider as societies.Nvidia Cosmos: A Case StudyWhen I read the list of companies that have already been adopting Nvidia Cosmos technology, most of them were unfamiliar. But one stuck out:The ride-sharing company Uber is an early adopter of this kind of physics AI.Generative AI will power the future of mobility, requiring both rich data and very powerful compute, said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi in a press statement. By working with NVIDIA, we are confident that we can help supercharge the timeline for safe and scalable autonomous driving solutions for the industry. That phrase, safe and scalable autonomous driving, probably sums up the project well, although, as with self-driving vehicle designs over the past two decades or so, the devil is in the details.Theres not a lot more available about exactly what Uber is doing with Nvidia Cosmos. But we can better understand the framework itself, and the context of what Nvidia is doing as a major innovator in these kinds of systems. The OmniverseI was also reading about the Nvidia Omniverse platform that the company describes this way:A platform of APIs, SDKs, and services that enable developers to integrate OpenUSD, NVIDIA RTX rendering technologies, and generative physical AI into existing software tools and simulation workflows for industrial and robotic use cases. So what it sounds like is that the Omniverse platform is more for evaluation, monitoring and tool use, in aid of exploring whats possible with the world foundation models themselves. An Inflection PointIm going to end with this quote from CEO Jensen Huang, who reportedly intoned: the ChatGPT moment for robots is coming.Thats probably the headline here, because all of us have been wondering when we will start seeing these smart, physics-aware robots walking among us, or powering truly autonomous vehicles. The answer seems to be that its going to be sooner, rather than later.

Blue Origin launched its New Glenn heavy-lift rocket for the first time last week, and news sites and social media feeds were quick to sharedramatic images of the 98-meter-tall rocket heading toward the heavens. At the same time, NASA astronaut Don Pettit captured the launch in a long exposure from the International Space Station (ISS) some 250 miles above Earth. The result is a rocket-launch photo unlike any youve seen before:Blue Origins New Glenn rocket visible as a faint streak of light from bottom right to top left. Don Pettit / NASASharing the image in a post on X, Pettit, who arrived at the orbital outpost in September, explained that it was captured over a period of four minutes, which explains the star trails that dominate the picture. With Earth at the bottom, the New Glenn rocket is visible as a faint streak crossing the image from the bottom right to the upper left.Recommended VideosThis was not an easy photograph to take, Pettit wrote, adding that the space station was over Oklahoma at the beginning of the exposure and over central Gulf of Mexico at the end. Please enable Javascript to view this contentPettit has earned a reputation for his impressive photography work during four missions to orbit over the last couple of decades. The experienced astronaut is particularly fond of shots filled with star trails, but this appears to be the first time that hes been lucky enough to include a rocket launch in one.Other notable images from Pettits current ISS mission include one showing a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft hurtling back to Earth, and another showing the bright glow of an aurora above Earth.Always on the lookout for a stunning scene, he also captured this stunning image of waterways, which he described as flowing silver snakes.Pettit recently took time out to talk about his photography work in an interview from the space station.Editors Recommendations

  • I was diagnosed with sepsis while at Disney World. The hardest thing was dealing with the guilt that I was letting my kids down.
    www.businessinsider.com
Two days into a family trip, I spiked a 103 fever and didn't feel great. At the hospital, I was diagnosed with sepsis and felt guilty for ruining my family's trip. I learned I can't control what happens and should let go of mom guilt. Two days into a Disney World vacation with my husband Anthony, our two daughters, and my in-laws, I became very sick. With a fever of 103, I shook with chills, ached all over, and dry-heaved repeatedly. We'd been excited about this trip. Every day before we left, I drew a Disney-themed picture on my 8-year-old daughter's snack bag. I counted the days, with the number eight hidden in Cinderella's castle, Mickey's four-fingered glove, and a glittery two alongside Tinkerbell. The author felt bad for leaving her family while she was at the hospital. Courtesy of the author And then, I was in the room feeling guilty while my family explored Magic Kingdom. I'm no stranger to illness. Born with heart disease, I've recovered from four open heart surgeries, but I rolled around the bed moaning in pain. I cried to Anthony on the phone, delirious from the fever, the lorazepam I'd taken, or both.I didn't think anything was seriously wrong, but I called my cardiology nurse after a few days. She said I likely had a virus, but since my mechanical valve and pacemaker are breeding grounds for bacteria, we should rule out blood infection. She sent me to the emergency room for blood cultures.Things were worse than I imagined"She's septic," the triage nurse said.Maybe I couldn't register her words through the pain; maybe Anthony was getting me a blanket at that moment because once I was in an exam room, neither of us understood why the clinicians seemed so serious. This was a virus; I was only here as a precaution. But my pressure was 70/40, my white blood cell count was elevated, and I had an infection somewhere. The culture results would take days, but they treated my symptoms and started antibiotics. Once I could think clearly, the guilt returned. This wasn't how I'd imagined this vacation. I was supposed to watch my daughters spin around in oversize teacups, not see the room spin around me. Instead of pulling on a hospital gown, I should've been helping my 8-year-old pull on her princess dress. I wanted to be pushing my 4-year-old in her stroller, not being pushed through the hospital on a gurney. The culture came back positive. I was moved to an inpatient floor, and the guilt festered. I was in the hospital for about a week, but it felt like forever. I cried often when my kids flew home without me, before every medical test, petrified the results would keep me away from them longer, and each time, my in-laws sent me a picture of their faces. If I'd paid attention, I would've noticed those smiling faces. While I was wallowing in guilt, they were having the time of their lives. We made our way through it togetherI remained guilty when I returned home and spent four months on IV antibiotics, which ravaged my stomach and kept me curled on the couch for half that time. I was lucky to have my husband home temporarily, my mother, who moved in while I recovered, and extended family and friends willing to help. It killed me that I could hardly take care of my girls, but we found a way. We cuddled while watching TV and played games. They decorated my IV pole for my birthday. In the end, I didn't need to feel so guilty. My kids are OK. It wasn't easy. My older daughter admitted later that she cried herself to sleep while I was in the hospital. My younger one cried so much before preschool during that time, we pulled her out. It was hard, but so is life. They got through it and learned they had parents who loved them and an entire village willing to care for them when their mother couldn't.I learned that this ever-pressing guilt we moms carry is futile. I can't control what happens to me. Inevitably, I'll have more medical issues down the line. Maybe my kids will be better prepared to handle it. At least now I know we can get through it together. And I know not only that I love them, sometimes to a painful degree, but that they love me too, even when things are difficult and even if sometimes I ruin their good time.

  • Dynasty Warriors: Origins review one man army
    metro.co.uk
Dynasty Warriors: Origins same old story (Koei Tecmo)With its 25th anniversary approaching, the veteran PlayStation 2 franchise attempts to reinvent itself as a more modern action strategy game.If we were going to make bets on which franchise from the early days of the PlayStation 2 was going to survive all the way to 2025, we would not have put any money on Dynasty Warriors. When it first appeared it was essentially a tech demo, with the novelty of having hundreds of enemies on screen at once outweighing the fact that the game was extremely shallow and repetitive.Rather than being quietly forgotten, like other technically advanced but gameplay inhibited titles like Battle Arena Toshinden or Jumping Flash!, Dynasty Warrior has somehow managed to endure. Never very popular in the West, for some time it was one of the biggest franchises in Japan, although thats not really been the case for a while now.Despite dozens of entries, including numerous spin-offs, none of the games have been very good, because none of them have ever tried to evolve the formula in any meaningful fashion. Thereve been a few crossovers, such as with Zelda and Persona, that werent too terrible but overall its a franchise that has been underperforming for decades and continues to have seemingly little interest in bettering itself. As the name suggests, this is intended as a reboot for the franchise, after plans for Dynasty Warriors 10 were cancelled in the wake of Dynasty Warrior 9s poor reception (it managed to make things even more boring than usual by switching to an open world environment). Origins returns to the more traditional style of level design while also making new changes, the most obvious being that youre now only playing as one character throughout the whole game, rather than the dozens of previous titles. As usual, the game is set in ancient China, but while previous games were merely influenced by the 14th century novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms this one attempts to adapt it, or rather the first half of it, a little more accurately than usual. That results in a somewhat more serious tone than normal and yet still youre taking on whole armies single-handedly to the sound of soft rock. You play as an unknown warrior with amnesia, but that helps make it clearer who everyone else is, as youre introduced to them through the story, rather than suddenly just taking control of them on the battlefield. Its a good idea in theory, but in practice it leads to far more cut scenes than normal and lots of circular conversations and predictable plot points (in regards to your amnesia) that is not only tedious to get through but constantly interrupts the action. If the dialogue and voice-acting was any better wed be tempted to say this was actually a good thing, as the action remains as brain dead and endlessly repetitive as always. However, one unequivocal improvement in Origins is the graphics, which now feature even more enemies on screen at once. Individuals are reasonably well detailed, but they still shuffle about impotently, presenting absolutely no danger to you unless you just put the controller down and dont do anything and even then you have to do so for a good few minutes to be in trouble. The majority of missions follow the same old formula, as you try to take over enemy forts in order to stop them spawning new opponents and instead fill the map with your own (equally lackadaisical) troops. At the same time, enemy soldiers will be trying to do the same with your bases, which has always seemed like a great way of mixing action with strategy.Unfortunately, it never amounts to anything more than trying to get to each fort as quickly as possible. Apart from working out the optimum route to do so, which is usually blindingly obvious, theres no real strategising to be done and your control over your own troops remains very limited. Dynasty Warriors: Origins a very consistent 25 years (Koei Tecmo)At certain times, particularly when youre invading a base, youll come across a mini-boss of some sort, which unlike the usual cannon fodder enemies will actually put up a fight. This is the one time you have to pay attention to what youre doing, with the game having a wider array of parry, dodge, and special move options than normal. Its not exactly Sekiro, in terms of complexity or stylishness, but it is a welcome attempt to modernise the combat and definitely more interesting than lawnmowing your way through more no-name soldiers. Also, while youre always playing the same character there are nine different weapon types for you to utilise, each handy in different situations, whether its clearing out large groups or enabling charged attacks that are more useful against named opponents. The problem is that none of this usually matters, because as well as being incredibly repetitive Origins is, like most of the series, very easy. The only time it really threatens to become interesting is the occasional mission that does not follow the standard Dynasty Warriors formula. For example, theres one where youre trying to disperse a magic fog and a genuinely good one where youre trying to climb a seemingly endless set of stairs.More TrendingThese are very much the exceptions to the rule though and the fundamental problem with Origins going back to basics, after the unsuccessful experiment of Dynasty Warriors 9, is that the basics of the series simply arent very good. Not only that but this entry is missing some of the few things that made the originals fun, in the lack of other playable characters or any kind of multiplayer or co-op.One of the priorities with Origins has been to ensure its accessible to new players but beyond slightly better graphics and one-on-one combat the attempts at modernisation fall flat. Ending a mission with a kill count in the hundreds of thousands is amusing the first time, perhaps even the second, but 25 years later the novelty has worn so thin it seems like madness to keep making the same game again and again and expecting anyone but the most diehard fans to care.If there are more crossovers in the future, that use Dynasty Warriors: Origins as their foundation, then maybe they could make better use of its advancements but were not so sure. Dynasty Warriors has always had the potential to be more than just a mindless hack n slash, but Origins does so little to advance the formula its hard to imagine it will ever improve.Dynasty Warriors: Origins review summaryIn Short: Some very minor improvements to the Dynasty Warriors formula but this is just as vapid and repetitive as it was back in the PlayStation 2 era, only now with relatively modern graphics.Pros: One-on-one combat is the best the series has seen, and the visuals and scale are more impressive than they have been. A few interesting one-off missions.Cons: The same mindless and repetitive action as its been for the last 25 years, with very little in the way of strategy. No co-op or other playable characters. Poor storytelling.Score: 5/10Formats: PlayStation 5 (reviewed), Xbox Series X/S, and PCPrice: 64.99Publisher: Koei TecmoDeveloper: Omega ForceRelease Date: 17th January 2025Age Rating: 16 Dynasty Warriors: Origins only fun in theory (Koei Tecmo)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.GameCentralSign up for exclusive analysis, latest releases, and bonus community content. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply.
