The next instalment in our 21st-Century Architecture: 25 Years 25 Buildings series looks atBosco Verticale, the first "vertical forest".Greenwashing gimmick or much-needed urban vegetation? Plants and trees on buildings evoke strong opinions and Bosco Verticale is the poster child for the trend, which gained significant traction in the second decade of the 21st century.Described by Italian architect Stefano Boerias a "home for trees that also houses humans and birds", the development was his first in a series of "vertical forests".Stefano Boeri's Bosco Verticale was the most significant buying of 2014. Photo by Dimitar HarizanovCompleted by Boeri Studio Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca and Giovanni La Varra, the project was not the first building to incorporate planting into its facade. It followed a growing movement aimed at increasing the amount of vegetation in urban areas by planting vertically on buildings. This began with green walls literally walls covered in shrubs and planters supported by hydroponic systems, and continued with more ambitions projects incorporating larger plants. The most significant of these was the 10-storey Tower Flower completed by Edouard Franois in 2004, which was surrounded by 380 oversized concrete plant pots containing bamboo.Bosco Verticale took the trend to its extreme. The two towers are covered in 800 trees, along with 15,000 perennials and 5,000 shrubs. The pair of skyscrapers are covered in 800 trees. Photo by Giovanni NardiBuilt as part of the redevelopment of an industrial area in the Porta Nuova district of Milan, the pair of residential towers are two of 20 built in the new business district. The 19- and 27-storey towers contain 111 luxury apartments.Although the development includes Italy's tallest building the Unicredit Tower by Csar Pelli Boeri's is by far the most distinctive.Read: Zaha Hadid's Bergisel Ski Jump was the most significant building of 2002The towers themselves are simple rectangular blocks clad in black ceramic panels. What defines them is the trees.Covering every facade, the trees and plants grow out of planters incorporated into balconies that extend 3.35 metres from the buildings. The planting shades the building in summer months. Photo by Dimitar HarizanovThis year is the 10th anniversary of Bosco Verticale and despite many people's doubts, the trees are still very much alive and thriving. To ensure they could thrive, Boeri and engineering studio Arup carried out a detailed botanical analysis to determine species that could grow successfully within the limited space of the planters while not over-burdening the structure. The trees are planted into the balconies. Photo courtesy of Boeri StudioPlanting was specified on a floor-by-floor basis, with over 60 varieties of tree including cherry, olive and oak, and 90 varieties of plants used.As well as increasing the biodiversity of the area and benefitting the health of residents, the planting has a practical purpose. It deserves to exert significant influence on the development of tower design in the decades to comeEllis Woodman in the Architect's JournalThe deciduous trees provide shading for the full-height glazing in the summer, while in winter the bare trees allow more sunlight and heat into the apartments.Along with the botanical analysis to ensure the plants survived, a detailed wind assessment was carried out for safety. The larger trees are secured with a safety cable along with a steel cage to enclose the root ball to ensure they are not ripped out in heavy winds.Ten years after the project completed the planting is thriving. Photo by Iwan BaanOverall the towers include the equivalent of 30,000 square metres of woodland and undergrowth, according to Boeri.Although the planting was successful, many simply do not believe that trees should be placed on the sides of building primarily for financial and resource reasons. The trees and the soil needed to support them add weight to the building, requiring a more and more complex structure to be built, which uses more resources in this case, concrete and steel. Complex systems are also required to keep the planting alive, with an increased maintenance cost.Climate journalist Tim De Chant, now senior climate writer at TechCrunch, was one of those who was sceptical. In a piece written in 2013, he calculated that for the cost of adding trees to the skyscrapers (believed to have increased construction costs by five per cent) 860 times more forest could have been planted at ground level. The towers were described as a "pioneering project". Photo by Iwan BaanDespite a fair amount of scepticism, on its completion Bosco Verticale won numerous architecture awards including the International Highrise Award in 2014 and the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat Award for the best tall building in the world in 2015.Critics also approved, with Ellis Woodman writing in the Architects' Journal that the building should "exert significant influence" on future skyscrapers."Il Bosco Verticale demonstrates that possibilities remain for architects operating in such environments to deliver something richer than self-referential forms in off-the-shelf technology," he wrote.Read: Stefano Boeri covers social housing tower with 10,000 plants"A pioneering project, it deserves to exert significant influence on the development of tower design in the decades to come," he added. As Woodman predicted, Bosco Verticale influenced numerous buildings that followed, with tree-covered buildings since built in cities across the world from Shanghai to Athens. From the start Boeri referred to Milan's Bosco Verticale as a prototype and has since designed numerous vertical forests around the world as he refines the concept. The development was the first in a series of vertical forests. Photo by Dimitar HarizanovAmong the numerous vertical forest skyscrapers set to be built are towers in Egypt's New Administrative Capital, Albania's capital Tirana, Lausanne in Switzerland, Nanjing in China and even Dubai.Perhaps most impressively, the concept has recently been adapted for the Trudo Vertical Forest social housing tower in Eindhoven. Covered in 10,000 plants, the 18-storey tower contains 125 social-housing units. In total eight vertical forests have been completed, with a further eight under construction and 24 more currently being designed.Did we get it right? Was Bosco Verticale the most significant building completed in 2014? Let us know in the comments. We will be running a poll once all 25 buildings are revealed to determine the most significant building of the 21st century so far. This article is part of Dezeen's 21st Century Architecture: 25 Years 25 Buildings series, which looks at the most significant architecture of the 21st century so far. • This Clamshell Keyboard Case turns your iPhone into an AI-Powered Laptop
    www.yankodesign.com
Details on the Amber case are scarce, but it comes from an AI startup looking to revolutionize how writers use AI. The startup responsible for the case is Amber.Page, an AI-powered writing assistant that works to analyze writing styles and replicate them using powerful online as well as offline AI. The service is available for early-access, and from the looks of it, writers might even get the opportunity to turn their phones into makeshift laptops thanks to this case. The case renders were published by Justin Mitchell, founder of Amber, on Threads. Weve seen smartphone keyboard cases like the Clicks case for the iPhone; but unlike the Clicks which gives you a Blackberry-style vertical-mode keyboard, the Amber case turns your phone into a laptop screen of sorts. Highly reminiscent of the Nokia 9300 and other Symbian phones of the early 2000s, the Amber case was built for writers who want to ditch their laptops and tablets for something even more portable.Designer: Amber.PageFrom the looks of it, the case isnt the kind you can permanently keep your phone in. Its designed to dock your phone just when you want to get some typing done. When docked, the phones capabilities are severely limited you cant use the main camera, you cant use the phone to make regular phone calls but what you can do is type like a wizard. The high-travel mechanical keyboard at the bottom gives you as much of an analog writing experience as possible. It comes with a 60% layout, sporting all the keys youd need to really get some hardcore typing done. The hinge is adjustable just like a laptop, the keyboard has ports for charging it, but I doubt theres any pass-through charging for your phone. The keyboard itself is highly tactile, but from the looks of it, it isnt backlit, so youre limited to typing in well-lit settings. Still, once the muscle memory kicks in, it really makes typing articles and messages easy something I still cant do with my regular touchscreen keyboard.Like I said, details on the keyboard case are scant for now. Justin says his companys bootstrapped and is looking to roll the hardware out soon, although these renders are just a visual indication of what the device may look like. Its the kind you stash away in a bag and open it just when you need to type. Like I mentioned, the phone isnt meant to sit perpetually inside the case, but it docks in perfectly when you want to get some serious writing down.Justin hinted at a price tag of under $250, and if/when the clamshell keyboard launches, itll primarily be targeted towards writers, journalists, editors, and anyone who could use their phone as a makeshift laptop. Besides, Ambers AI service should come in handy with writers blocks, allowing you to truly use modern hardware and software to make writing more effortless. The post This Clamshell Keyboard Case turns your iPhone into an AI-Powered Laptop first appeared on Yanko Design.

The guide is written for iOS, but the information applies to macOS Sequoia, as well. What are the Apple Intelligence features on the Mac?Many Apple Intelligence features dont require you to do anything, such as summaries in Messages, Mail, and Notifications, as they appear automatically. As for features you can use on an as-needed basis, heres a quick list.Image Playground (macOS Sequoia 15.2)Image Playground is a standalone Apple intelligence-powered app that is installed on your Mac when you upgrade to macOS Sequoia 15.2. The app creates illustrations based on descriptions based on text prompts. You can also upload photos of people as the basis for a new illustration. However, Image Playground does not create deepfake photo-like images or modify existing photosit only creates illustrations. The Image Playground app is part of macOS Sequoia 15.2FoundryMail (macOS Sequoia 15.1)There are a couple of new features in Mail powered by Apple Intelligence. A new Show Priority feature will display time-sensitive emails at the top of your inbox. Additionally, short summaries will appear under each email so you can see whats inside at a glance, and when you open an email, a Summarize button can be used to generate a synopsis. Also, when composing messages, Mail has suggested replies as well as Writing Tools to help you clean up replies and refine the language of what youve written. And ChatGPT can compose text if you enable it above.Photos Clean-up tool (macOS Sequoia 15.1)In the Photos app, when editing a photo, youll find a Clean-Up button. With this tool, you can erase unwanted items, and Photos will fill in the background with its best guess about what would have been there. In the before and after images below, the Clean-up tool was used to remove objects and a sign in the background. Use the slider to see the difference.Siri (macOS Sequoia 15.1)Siri has a new wrap-around look on the edge of your Macs display, and it does a better job of understanding natural speaking, like if you stumble or restate when you are saying. Later in 2025, a new update will make Siri smarter and more screen-aware.Writing Tools (macOS Sequoia 15.1)In Mail, Pages, and other Apple apps, youll find new tools to help improve your writing. It can proofread, revise, and even offer rewrite suggestions. With ChatGPT enabled, you can also compose messages from scratch. FoundryAlso read: Where is Apple Intelligence on an iPhone?

  • Final Fantasy 7Rebirth PC Everything You Need to Know
    gamingbolt.com
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is finally coming to PC on January 23rd, almost a year since launching on PS5. Between all the awards and overwhelming critical support, there are a lot of expectations from this port. Its pretty much the same in terms of story and content with no DLC forthcoming, but there are several new graphical options to put it over the console version. Here are 15 things you should know about the acclaimed RPG before picking it up on PC (which is currently discounted by 30 percent until launch).SettingWithout getting into spoilers for the first part, Final Fantasy 7Rebirthventures beyond Midgar into the wider world. From the quaint village of Kalm, players will navigate extensive plains, visit cities like Junon and Costa del Sol, and much more. Some locations from the original arent present inRebirth, though they will appear in the third part. The same goes for Cids airship, the Highwind. Nevertheless, the world is teeming with side quests and secrets, including the usual towers to uncover neighboring activities.Exploration and TraversalWhile Final Fantasy 7Rebirthdoes feature a fair number of linear areas, the larger open regions are arguably the main highlight. The size and scale of these locations are such that there are even different Chocobo types with unique movement abilities to help get around, from climb climbers to flyers. You even get a buggy at one point which can traverse all kinds of terrain.CharactersCloud, Tifa, Barrett, Aerith and Red XIII return from the first part, with new abilities and skills to their repertoires. This time, Red XIII is playable and packs Vengeance Mode, which improves his damage and speed while allowing him to leech health from enemies. Yuffie joins the party after appearing in Episode INTERmission and still carries over the ability to imbue weapons with different elements. Finally, theres Cait Sith, whos skills change depending on whether hes on his Moogle, and whose name youve probably been pronouncing wrong since the original Final Fantasy 7. Of course, there are other characters youll encounter, even though the likes of Vincent Valentine arent playable, but youll have to play it yourself.Combat ImprovementsThough it uses the same combat system as Remake with the ATB Gauge and Limit Breaks,Rebirthexpands on it in numerous ways. You can acquire dual-type Materia to harness, say, two different elements on top of various other options. Folios are utilized to upgrade your character with SP and are the key to unlocking Synergy Abilities. New Summons like Phoenix, Bahamut Arisen, Titan, and more have also been added.Synergy AbilitiesYou also have new Synergy Abilities, essentially team-ups between two party members. Depending on the current party, these can unleash powerful attacks that deal massive damage up close and at range (with a few defensive options also available). The best part is that they dont require spending ATB bars, thus providing another resource to decimate enemies.Mini-GamesIf theres one another pillar that defines theRebirthexperience, its the mini-games. Queens Blood is a standalone card game with its own side quest chain while Fort Condor offers some tower defense fun. The Junon Parade has also been expanded into something spectacular and the Gold Saucer is jam-packed with the likes of Galactic Saviors, G-Bike, 3D Brawler, and more. Do you need to ace them all? No, but they offer tons of additional fun regardless.Nvidia DLSS and VRR SupportNvidia DLSS is available out of the box for improved frame rates, which should also help those struggling with performance. The developer also confirmed that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is supported, which is a good thing given the higher frame rates.Up to 4K and120 FPS supportFor all its visual beauty on PS5 and even PS5 Pro, Final Fantasy 7Rebirths upper limit is 4K/60 FPS (and that resolution is achieved with PSSRs upscaling). The PC version also supports resolutions up to 4K but it also offers frame rates up to 120 frames per second. Long story short, if you want to experience the RPG in the most visually pleasing way possible, the PC version looks to be the ticket.Graphics Presets and OptionsWhile the full range of graphics settings has yet to be revealed, there will be three presets: Low, Medium and High. Players can also adjust the background model level of detail and texture MIPmaps to enhance the visuals more. This should result in the PC version offering the highest level of graphical fidelity.Lighting Improvements and Customizable On-Screen NPC CountThe developer touts lighting adjustments for the PC version alongside significantly improved light rendering. The results also apply to cutscenes, making them look even better than before. You can also customize the number of on-screen NPCs for further performance gains.DualSense SupportLike many of Sonys ports of first-party PS5 exclusives, Final Fantasy 7Rebirthon PC will support the DualSense controller. Furthermore, it features the same controls as on console, allowing fans of the console version to seamlessly translate their experience over to PC.Keyboard and Mouse SupportThose who prefer to play on a mouse and keyboard are also in luck asRebirthsupports both on PC. Furthermore, you can remap them according to different activities with separate configurations for combat, mini-games and exploration.Steam Deck SupportHaving an experience like this on the go would be truly something. And while the developer hasnt quite given it the Steam Deck approved label, it is working diligently on optimizations to ensure the Steam version is playable on the handheld.PC RequirementsWith everything that Final Fantasy 7Rebirthoffers on PC, its no surprise that the requirements can be hefty, especially on the low end. To play at Low settings and 1080p/30 FPS, you need a Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core 14-8100, a Radeon RX 6600, Intel Arc 1580 or Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060, and 16 GB of RAM. For Medium settings and 1080p/60 FPS, a Ryzen 5 5600, Ryzen 7 3700X, Core i7-8700, or Core i5-10400, a Radeon RX 6700 XT or GeForce RTX 2070, and 16 GB of RAM are necessary. Its worth noting that playing at 4K on either Low or Medium requires a GPU with at least 12 GB VRAM.As for High settings at 2160p/60 FPS, a Ryzen 7 5700X or Core i7-10700, a Radeon RX 7900 XTX or GeForce RTX 4080, and 16 GB RAM are needed. This time, a GPU with 16 GB VRAM or higher is required for playing in 4K. Windows 11 64-bit is mandatory for the Recommended and Ultra requirements, and if that wasnt enough, you need a whopping 155 GB of installation space on a solid-state drive.PlaytimeMuch has been made about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirths extensive playtime the developer revealed before the PS5 versions launch that it had double the side content of Remake. Sure enough, HowLongToBeat reveals that the main story and extra content take about 91.5 hours on average to beat (with the main story only requiring 47.5 hours). And if you opt to complete everything? It could easily take about 167 hours.

  • Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a refreshing take on the legendary series
    www.theverge.com
In the doldrums of winter, Ive reached for comfort media which, for me, means Chinese historical dramas. And while the elaborate costumes and overly sweet romances are enjoyable, sometimes a girl wants something with a little more teeth. Dynasty Warriors: Origins has given me exactly what I needed.Dynasty Warriors: Origins, developed by Koei-Tecmos Omega Force, adapts the famous Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms into knock down, drag out, 1 vs 100 style battles. This is the tenth game in the series, coming at a time when the Dynasty Warriors franchise had gotten a reputation for being stale. After all, theres only so many times you can retread the same story with the same characters and the same general gameplay without getting one note. Dynasty Warriors: Origins, however, is a welcome refreshment over its predecessors.Cao Cao can always be counted on to put his ambition on display. Image: Koei-TecmoAfter releasing Dynasty Warriors 9 in 2018, Omega Force took a break from the series to work on licensed games like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Persona 5 Strikers, and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. That detour through games that I felt were excellent applications of Omega Forces brand of hack-and-slash action gave the studio the new perspective it needed to come back to its signature franchise and shake shit up.In Origins, instead of bouncing between different characters during certain battles as you had in previous games, you witness the story through a single character named the Wanderer. You have no memory of yourself, and as you progress, you slowly regain your memories and special powers. The Wanderer can use any type of weapon, which is another welcome change from previous games that locked weapons to a certain character. Each weapon has abilities you unlock through continued use, and the Wanderer himself has skills and perks he unlocks via skill trees.Combat in Origins is simple to get the hang of. You have a light attack and a heavy attack that can be modified by using your dodge or jump. Theres also a suite of abilities that consume a resource called bravery that you earn by landing hits on your opponent. Finally, theres block and parry mechanics and an ultimate ability called musou used when youre impossibly surrounded or need to put extra hurt on an enemy general. While this all sounds like your standard hack-and-slash game, I was pleased Origins made me work for my victories. Even on the standard difficulty and with years of experience playing Warriors games, I couldnt just blindly hack my way through enemies. Generals hit surprisingly hard, and if I wasnt using my various abilities to mitigate or counter their attacks, theyd continuously generate shields Id have to keep chewing through to take them down. Unfortunately, your allied generals, whose deaths can result in an automatic loss, are made of tissue paper, so the longer enemy generals are alive, the higher your chances are of losing a battle. Its great fun knocking around scores of enemies as The Wanderer. Image: Koei-TecmoBattles take place on large, winding maps stuffed with bases to take over and enemy generals to defeat. Even though defeating the enemy leader while keeping your own leaders alive is generally the only win condition, I loved being a completionist. When I got a panicked cry for help from my allies, it was fun rushing to their defense even if helping didnt make the battle end sooner. It made me feel like a big damn hero. And isnt that the whole point of a game that lets you fight alongside the legendary characters of Chinese history?Playing the hero is the best part about Origins and whats been sorely missing from the franchise. Earlier games were burdened with unnecessary systems like the atrocious, poorly-paced open world of Dynasty Warriors 9 or the no-thoughts, head-empty button mashing of Dynasty Warriors 8. But in Origins, executing a special ability pulled you into an elaborate cutscene with animations that look like they were ripped straight out of a wuxia film. My choices in the games story moments let me build relationships with characters I have loved so much across so many different mediums. I do understand other reviews criticisms of the Wanderer. As a character he has no personality to speak of, and his quest to regain his memories isnt compelling. But I can easily overlook that because this is Dynasty Warriors. All Im here for, and what this game has given me in spades, is to eat meat buns and pursue Lu Bu and Im all out of meat buns.Dynasty Warriors: Origins is out now on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

    www.ign.com
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse star Jharrel Jerome has dashed hopes that the highly anticipated third film Beyond the Spider-Verse is releasing anytime soon, saying he hasn't even recorded lines yet.Jerome told Decider that production on the presumed finale hasn't started up yet as a lot of things are "being figured out." That being said, many didn't necessarily expect it to come anytime soon given the second film arrived five years after the first in 2023."No, I wish," Jerome said when asked if production had begun. "We havent started up yet. A lot of things being figured out, but good things."All the Spideys in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Full Spoilers Edition)Jerome didn't have a huge role in the second film but seemingly will in the third as, spoiler warning for Across the Spider-Verse's finale, he appears set to play its main antagonist. Jerome played Miles G. Morales from Earth-42, a version of Miles who appears at the end of the film not as Spider-Man but the Prowler.Life for this Miles wasn't as positive as it was for the series' protagonist, as the radioactive spider due to bite the former shifted to the latter's reality and bit him instead. Morales therefore didn't become Spider-Man, and once his universe's Peter Parker died, New York became ruled by supervillains and he became one too.The rest of that story, and how it clashes with the main Miles who did become Spider-Man, will likely unfold in Beyond the Spider-Verse, but fans will still be waiting a while before they get to see it.It isn't expected until 2026 at the earliest according to Deadline, though as mentioned, keeping pace with the last film's release would see it released in 2028.Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter.
