• Is Elon Musk a government employee? Heres why it matters
    www.fastcompany.com
Elon Musk, the worlds richest man, is CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, but when it comes to his work with the federal government, his status is a lot less clear. While hes firmly in charge of Donald Trumps Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), whether he will actually become a government employee is still an unanswered question. That might seem like a technicality. Musk has Trumps ear and the two have basically been inseparable for months now. But as Trumps second term gets underway and DOGE begins to have actual power in the administration, whether or not Musk is named a special government employee could have some real impactsas well as lead to some legal challenges, some of which have already been filed.Since DOGE is not an official government department, Musk did not have to go through any sort of vetting or confirmation process. The department will report to the White House chief of staff Susie Wiles via an administrator (though its unclear if Musk will fill that role), according to the executive order establishing it. DOGE will actually be a reorganization (and renaming) of an existing division called the United States Digital Service, which was established in August 2014 by President Barack Obama.Elon Musk was initially expected to have an office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is part of the White House complex, but not part of the West Wing. Now, according to a report in the New York Times, Musk might be moving into the same building as Trump, giving him even more access to the executive office.Musks formal employment status will impact what sort of restrictions he could face. (Fast Company reached out to the White House inquiring about Musks employee designation and will update this story if we receive a reply.)If Musk becomes a special government employee, he would face conflict-of-interest restrictions that could impact several of his businesses, which have several billion dollars in government contracts. He also would have to file financial disclosure forms, unless he chose to take no salary (something he has indicated he is open to). Also, with special government employee status, Musk would be restricted by federal ethics laws, which make it illegal for any government employees to participate in official matters in which they, their families, or their organizations have a financial interest. (Trump, though, could give Musk a written waiver from those, according to a report in the Times.)But remaining a private citizen doing work for the government might not align with Musks goals, either. In doing so, he would run into a rule: the Federal Advisory Committee Act. This law requires advisory committees to make committee meetings open to the public, along with all documents and materials submitted to or produced by the department. As a special government employee, DOGE would have the option of conducting some business in full view of the public and some in a more private manner.Elon Musk has said DOGE will work with full transparency. DOGE, so far, has been largely operating in secret, aside from occasional posts on X.Of course, if opponents have their way, the whole question of Musks status as a special government employee could be moot. Minutes after Trump was sworn in on Monday, a lawsuit was filed by National Security Counselors, a public interest law firm, alleging DOGE violated federal transparency laws tied to the Federal Advisory Committee Act.DOGE, the suit alleges, has failed to allow the public to attend meetings, keep minutes, file a charter with Congress, and more, as Musk and crew began looking for potential cuts shortly after the election was called. Ideas for cuts, the Washington Post reports, were exchanged via encrypted messages on the Signal app. That suit is just one of four filed against DOGE on Monday. They hope to shut down the department until it begins to comply with the transparency rules.

  • OpenAI and Softbank are starting a $500 billion AI data center company
    www.theverge.com
A plan to build a system of data centers for artificial intelligence has been revealed in a White House press conference, with Masayoshi Son, Sam Altman, and Larry Ellison joining Donald Trump to announce The Stargate Project. Their companies, Softbank, OpenAI, and Oracle (respectively), along with MGX are listed as initial equity funders for $500 billion in investments over the next four years, building new AI infrastructure for OpenAI in the United States.According to a statement from OpenAI, Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI are the initial tech partners, with a buildout currently underway starting in Texas as other sites across the country are evaluated. It also says that Oracle, NVIDIA, and OpenAI will closely collaborate to build and operate this computing system.Separately, Microsoft announced an update to its partnership with OpenAI, saying that the key elements of their deal remain in place through 2030, covering our access to OpenAIs IP, our revenue sharing arrangements and our exclusivity on OpenAIs APIs all continuing forward. What is changing is that Microsoft says OpenAI has made a new, large Azure commitment that will continue to support all OpenAI products as well as training. However, their exclusive arrangement for new capacity is changing so that now Microsoft has a right of first refusal over OpenAI building new capacity. In a press conference announcing the project, which has been rumored since early last year, Son and Altman spoke directly to Trump, insisting that the project only happened because of his election victory.

  • Prime Target Review
    www.ign.com
Prime Target kicks off with a fascinating premise: Edward Brooks (Leo Woodall) is on the brink of unraveling the mathematical secrets that safeguard every computer system in the world. The thrilling puzzle at the root of Edwards work positions the Apple TV+ drama for brilliance, but as the doe-eyed prodigy is pulled into a dangerous web of intellectual espionage and conspiratorial intrigue alongside NSA agent Taylah Sanders (Quintessa Swindell), Prime Target starts to lose its footing. While the opening episodes establish a sharp and engaging story grounded in a cozy Cambridge setting brimming with tweedy charms, its later, international-spy-thriller portions begin to feel like a Dan Brown novel blending egghead enigmas with grand conspiracies. The race to crack the pattern within the prime numbers underpinning most modern cryptographic security stumbles into the same pitfalls as the film versions of Browns The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons, as its embrace of big ideas is accompanied by dull info dumps, uneven pacing, and an overreliance on scenes of people doing research, pointing at screens, or reading old notes with intense stares. As Prime Target progresses, the journey begins to feel less compelling than the destination. It stretches itself thin over eight episodes, relying on filler and exposition that sap the story of its momentum. The tight construction and engaging question marks of the opening chapters are overtaken by repetition, with Edward and Taylah moving from one cryptic clue to the next, interspersed with vague, ominous warnings about the importance and apparent danger of numbers divisible only by 1 or themselves. These warnings become the shows awkward mantra, crowbarred into nearly every episode as if to remind viewers that the plot is still moving forward. I found the concept of an apocalyptic mathematical discovery undeniably cool, but the execution lacks the spark to make it feel genuinely thrilling or believable. Theres too much self-seriousness on display to allow for a full embrace of the concepts fun. In its place: a hatful of melodrama that mostly feels unearned. The characters are drawn just as flimsily. Thankfully, both leads deliver strong performances: Woodall plays Edward as the quintessential genius whose intellect seems almost too vast for the mundane concerns of everyday life, capturing a mix of youthful brilliance and prickly, too-smart-for-the-world hostility. And Swindell brings a calculated intensity to Taylah, tempered by moments of subtle, grounding warmth. Theyre intriguing protagonists, but their arcs still feel underdeveloped, with motivations shifting without much explanation and arguments that blow up seemingly out of nowhere. The supporting characters fare worse, often reduced to shallow vehicles for exposition and plot. Any attempts to goose the energy levels through globetrotting location changes come across as artificial distractions rather than meaningful advancements in the story.Eventually, Prime Target begins to buckle under the weight of its ambition. The tension dissipates as the story meanders, weighed down by superficial drama and a lack of compelling new plot points. While there are moments of genuine intrigue particularly in the way the writers weave Edwards work into the main storyline these moments are too fleeting to sustain momentum. Ultimately, the show is undermined by a lack of confidence in its own ideas. While it shines in moments particularly in the early episodes and remains fairly watchable throughout, it ultimately fails to live up to the grand spy-thriller potential its opening episodes tease.

  • Joaquin Phoenix Nominated For a Razzie Playing Oscar-Winning Role
    screencrush.com
In 2020, Joaquin Phoenix won an Academy Award for Best Actor for playing Arthur Fleck inJoker. In 2025, Phoenix was nominated for a Razzie for Worst Actor playing the exact same role inJokers sequel,Folie Deux. This sounds like a joke. But like pretty much everything inFolie Deux, it is not.Was Phoenix that much better playing this samecharacter in the first movie? I dont think so. Whatever you think of Joker: Folie Deux and I was certainly not a massive fan I dont think Phoenix was the problem. He was fully committed to his role, singing and dancing and generallybringing as much tortured humanity andmental instability as he possibly could to Arthur Fleck. But themovie around him was often a chore and it felt at times like it was deliberately composed toput fans of the original movie on trial. Half the film was set in a mental hospital, and half the film was set in a courtroom, as Gotham Citys district attorney tries Phoenixs Arthur Fleck for his crimes from Joker.YetFolie Deuxwasnt a compelling character study or a gripping legal thriller. But, again, thats not on Phoenix. He didnt write the film. (And in fact Lady Gaga waskind ofgood inJoker:Folie Deuxin spite of its conceptual issues, and she got nominated for a Razzie for Worst Actress anyway, but thats another matter entirely.)JK2_NT_230222_0750273.dngWarner Bros.loading...READ MORE: The Best Performances in Bad MoviesWhile as far as I can tell this exact circumstance being nominated for a Razzie for reprising a rolethat previously won an actor their Oscar is without precedent in the history of the Oscars and the Razzies, its almosthappened before. And as is tradition, they announce their annual nominees right before the Academy Awards announcetheirannual contenders. And so the Razzie nominees for 2024 are here. The list, unsurprisingly, is dominated bythe infamous Spider-Man spinoffMadame Web which was nominated for Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Dakota Johnson), Worst Supporting Actor (Tahar Rahim), Worst Supporting Actress (Emma Roberts), Worst Director (S.J. It was trying to do something and to say something, and at times it was genuinely beautiful. (It was often very funny too, although it was not always easy to tellwhether it was intentionally hilarious or not.)In other words, Megalopoliswas a world apart from something likeMadame Web, which was barely a movie at all and clearly made as part of an effort by Sony to exploit their Spider-Man IP in any way they possible could, regardless of whether that exploitation containeda shred of a compelling narrative reason to exist.Butthis is always the Razzies M.O.
