  • Rethinking Healthcare For Neurodivergent Individuals

Big data and artificial intelligence concept. Machine learning and cyber mind domination concept in ... [+] form of women face outline outline with circuit board and binary data flow on blue background.gettyHealthcare for neurodivergent individuals has long been riddled with challenges, from delayed diagnoses to fragmented care systems. The burden often falls disproportionately on families, particularly caregivers, who navigate waitlists, insurance battles, and limited resources. But as awareness of neurodivergence grows, so does the opportunity to rethink how healthcare is delivered, taught, and financed. With innovative tools and a shift toward inclusive, patient-centered care, organizations like the Institute for Exceptional Care (IEC) are driving systemic change. As Dr. Mai Pham, founder of IEC, explains, the goal is to create a healthcare system that works for everyone, not just those who fit neatly into its traditional framework.A Personal Mission Becomes a Systemic SolutionFor Pham, the journey to reimagine healthcare began at home. gettyFor Pham, the journey to reimagine healthcare began at home. My second-born, Alex, is 22 and autistic, she shares. Our familys experience with their mental health crisis in high school led to questioning and exploration on my part about how we failed them and how the healthcare system failed us.MORE FOR YOUDespite her position as a national healthcare leader, Pham found herself unprepared for the realities of navigating a system ill-equipped to serve families like hers. I realized families without our resources and healthcare connections would face even worse challenges, she says. This realization galvanized Pham to launch IEC, which focuses on preparing clinicians to work with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), designing systems to meet diverse patient needs, and finding better ways to finance those services. We need to balance professional expertise with the wisdom of patients and caregivers lived experiences, Pham emphasizes. Healthcare should aim for holistic well-being, not just the absence of disease. The Caregiver BurdenThe gaps in the healthcare system place an incredible burden on caregivers, often mothers, who are ... [+] forced to become full-time coordinators of their childs care.gettyThe gaps in the healthcare system place an incredible burden on caregivers, often mothers, who are forced to become full-time coordinators of their childs care. Robin McIntosh, CEO of Avela Health, shares her personal experience: Many caregivers, myself included, quit their jobs to manage the overwhelming coordination required to access quality healthcare. From navigating waitlists to driving to distant appointments, its an exhausting journey.Compounding the issue is the lack of diverse care options. Most families are funneled into Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), which may not be suitable for every child. This overreliance on caregivers and the limited spectrum of services make an already challenging journey even more daunting, McIntosh notes.Building a Culture of InclusionFor meaningful change, healthcare systems must embrace inclusivity at every level. gettyFor meaningful change, healthcare systems must embrace inclusivity at every level. IEC is leading the charge by building coalitions that bring healthcare leaders and community members together to co-create solutions. Our healthcare partners tell us that the process changes them, says Pham. It creates a new appreciation for the value of community input and results in better solutions that are more likely to be effective. It also takes the pressure off healthcare leaders to have all the answers. One example of this collaborative approach is the Always Uniquely Me app, developed by IEC in a project on Long Island. The app allows individuals with IDD or their caregivers to upload personal information, such as communication preferences, anxiety triggers, and tips for effective interactions. It humanizes the person to that clinician and helps reduce stress for everyone involved, Pham explains.Pham envisions the app being useful beyond the IDD community. Wouldnt that also be incredibly helpful for people with dementia? Or non-English speakers? she asks. Were trying to create the healthcare equivalent of curb cutsa system designed to be inclusive rather than retrofitted. The Role of Technology in Transforming CareTechnology is proving to be a game-changer in improving healthcare for neurodivergent individuals. ... Telehealth, for example, allows clinicians to observe patients in their home environments, reducing the stress of traveling to medical offices.Telehealth offers a clearer window into a patients daily life, says McIntosh. Its improving both accessibility and quality of care for autistic individuals.AI-powered platforms are another promising innovation. Avela Health uses AI to deliver scalable, personalized care plans grounded in evidence-based methodologies like Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBI). These tools integrate seamlessly into daily routines, offering families practical solutions, McIntosh says.Beyond care delivery, technology is also enhancing clinician efficiency. Pham highlights the potential of AI to streamline administrative tasks, such as notetaking, allowing clinicians to focus on patient care. No one enters this field to take notes, she says. Technology can free up time for what truly matters.

  • TikTok Makes a Comeback After Trump Assumes Office
    techreport.com
Key TakeawaysTikTok, which was scheduled to get banned as per the divest-or-ban bill, became unavailable for many users. However, after Trump assumed office, he promised to sign an order that would delay the ban, which allowed TikTok to restore services for the time being. The final fate of the company is yet to be decided. After being unavailable for just 12 hours, TikTok is back online for many users with the message Thanks for your patience and support. As a result of President Trumps efforts, TikTok is back in the U.S.!TikToks struggle with the US government has been going on for a year now. Last year former president Joe Biden signed a bill that forced TikTok to either part ways with its parent company ByteDance or risk getting banned in the US.TikTok obviously opposed this decision and engaged in a legal battle that went on till the end of 2024. In the end, TikTok lost and was scheduled to get banned. On Saturday night, the app became unusable for many. It was also unavailable on Apple and Google Play Store. However, things took a turn when Trump assumed office on January 20. As per his promise to keep TikTok around for a while, he promised to issue an executive order on the same day as his term began to delay the execution of the law.He urged TikToks partners to allow the app to keep operating and also promised that neither of them will be held accountable regardless of what happens with TikTok in the end. This assurance allowed TikTok to restore services even before the order was signed. Its unclear why Trump is so invested in saving TikTok. During his first term, it was he who suggested the idea of banning this platform. But this time, he has been rallying for it, openly speaking against the ban and promising to save it.It might have something to do with the fact that TikTok is very popular among the youth, and this time, they were his chief target for his vote bank. He did win the youth vote by a significant margin and confessed that TikTok might have something to do with it.What Happens Now?The fate of the company is yet to be decided. But TikTok is hoping for at least a 90-day extension to get enough time to handle this issue.During this time, it would try to sell the company to a non-Chinese owner. There have been rumors that this owner might be Elon Musk. However, nothing official has been confirmed just yet. Also, instead of a complete sell-off, might look to establish a 50-50 joint venture between ByteDance and the new American owner. This would be a win for all parties involved.ByteDance will be happy that it wont completely lose its precious app and access to the American market and the US authorities will be assured that the company is no longer engaging in any activity that could harm the country or its citizens.TikTok and CEO Shou Chew are very happy with Trumps quick response. He has expressed his gratitude to him multiple times. He even posted a video thanking him for his support and promising to keep cooperating with him to create a long-term solution that works for both parties. He also promised to attend Trumps Make America Great Again Victory Rally in Washington, DC before the official inauguration.Add Techreport to Your Google News Feed Get the latest updates, trends, and insights delivered straight to your fingertips. • Xiaomi's WinPlay brings Windows gaming support to HyperOS tablets
    www.techspot.com
In a nutshell: Xiaomi is introducing an exclusive gaming technology to its latest flagship Pad 6S Pro tablet. The virtualization software, dubbed "WinPlay," should run at least some AAA Windows titles on HyperOS, though users should not expect GeForce-level performance. Xiaomi System Software Development Director Zhang Guoquan recently introduced WinPlay as a potential turning point for tablet gaming. WinPlay is a new virtualization technology designed to run Windows games on HyperOS, a complex translation layer enabling triple-A gaming on mobile devices.WinPlay can work entirely offline, eliminating the need for cloud servers. The system exploits the underlying capabilities of Xiaomi HyperCore, the kernel running at the heart of the HyperOS computing platform. It's a "three-layer" virtualization technology specifically designed to run games, meaning it cannot run other Windows apps.Running the WinPlay Engine for the first time was an "incredible" experience, Guoquan said. Users can download, install, and run Windows games directly from Steam, and the translation technology reportedly only presents a 2.9 percent GPU performance loss.Despite being touted as a powerful virtualization solution for the latest Windows games, hardcore gamers will likely find WinPlay disappointing. Tomb Raider 9 (2013) runs at an average of 45 frames per second, though power consumption for the whole device is just 8.3W. Xiaomi says the WinPlay experience is comparable to running native games on a tablet.Xiaomi had to rewrite HyperCore's system architecture to make WinPlay run in the kernel space and intelligently allocate resources. The virtualization tech can support dedicated gaming peripherals over Bluetooth, including keyboards, mice, and controllers. However, the company optimized WinPlay for Xbox controllers, which can provide additional haptic feedback effects. Multiplayer is supported as well, with up to four people playing together. // Related StoriesGuoquan noted that WinPlay is still a work-in-progress virtualized mobile gaming solution and is only available in beta form for users running the Hyper OS 2 Beta system. The technology is only compatible with the Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro 12.4 tablet for now. Xiaomi has no plans for additional device support or a specific release timeline to reveal, for that matter. Guoquan only confirmed that developers plan to continue to improve WinPlay after a period of user feedback on the beta.Image credit: Trusted Reviews

  • Wine 10.0 released, adding Linux compatibility for Arm Windows apps
    arstechnica.com
windows on linux on arm Wine 10.0 released, adding Linux compatibility for Arm Windows apps Wine compatibility layer is the heart of many Windows app translation projects. Andrew Cunningham Jan 22, 2025 3:25 pm | 0 Credit: Microsoft/Wine HQ Credit: Microsoft/Wine HQ Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreThe open source Wine projectsometimes stylized WINE, for Wine Is Not an Emulatorhas become an important tool for companies and individuals who want to make Windows apps and games run on operating systems like Linux or even macOS. The CrossOver software for Mac and Windows, Apple's Game Porting Toolkit, and the Proton project that powers Valve's SteamOS and the Steam Deck are all rooted in Wine, and the attention and resources put into the project in recent years has dramatically improved its compatibility and usefulness.Yesterday, the Wine project announced the stable release of version 10.0, the next major version of the compatibility layer that is not an emulator. The headliner for this release is support for ARM64EC, the application binary interface (ABI) used for Arm apps in Windows 11, but the release notes say that the release contains "over 6,000 individual changes" produced over "a year of development effort."ARM64EC allows developers to mix Arm and x86-compatible codeif you're making an Arm-native version of your app, you can still allow the use of more obscure x86-based plugins or add-ons without having to port everything over at once. Wine 10.0 also supports ARM64X, a different type of application binary file that allowed ARM64EC code to be mixed with older, pre-Windows 11 ARM64 code.Wine's ARM64EC support does have one limitation that will keep it from working on some prominent Arm Linux distributions, at least by default: the release notes say it "requires the system page size to be 4K, since that is what the Windows ABI specifies." Several prominent Linux-on-Arm distributions default to a 16K page size because it can improve performancewhen page sizes are smaller you need more of them, and managing a higher number of pages can introduce extra CPU overhead.Asahi Linux, the Fedora-based distribution that's working to bring Linux to Apple Silicon Macs, uses 16K pages because that's all Apple's processors support. Some versions of the Raspberry Pi OS also default to a 16K page size, though it's possible to switch to 4K for compatibility's sake. Given that the Raspberry Pi and Asahi Linux are two of the biggest Linux-on-Arm projects going right now, that does at least somewhat limit the appeal of ARM64EC support in Wine. But as we've seen with Proton and other successful Wine-based compatibility layers, laying the groundwork now can deliver big benefits down the road.Other new additions to Wine 10.0 include improved support for high-DPI displays, which should be better at automatically scaling app windows that aren't DPI-aware. A Desktop Control Panel applet can control the configuration of the virtual "display" that apps running under Wine use. Support for various Direct3D features is improved, and the Vulkan renderer has gotten improvements meant to reduce stuttering in games.Windows-on-Arm: Its a real thing now!Though various version of Windows have been running on Arm processors for over a decade now, last year was when the project became a credible mainstream computing platform.Last summer, Qualcomm released its Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus processors, which could compete with the performance and power consumption of Intel, AMD, and Apple's laptop processors. Microsoft put the Snapdragon chips in the mainstream, mass-market versions of the Surface Pro tablet and the Surface Laptop, rather than putting them in a secondary side-project as it had done with hardware like the Surface Pro X; the company also announced a "Copilot+ PC" initiative, which featured Snapdragon-powered PCs from most of the major PC manufacturers.Microsoft also released the Windows 11 24H2 update, which looks like another routine yearly update on the surface but included large under-the-hood overhauls of Windows' compiler, kernel, and scheduler that improved performance for Arm chips as well as some x86 chips. Microsoft also updated and branded its x86-to-Arm code translation feature, now called "Prism." The company said at the time that Prism would run x86 apps between 10 and 20 percent faster than they had run in older Windows versions on the same hardware.Finallyand most relevantly, for people using Winethe company convinced a critical mass of major app developers to release versions of their apps that ran natively on the Arm versions of Windows. That included major browsers like Google Chrome, creative apps like Adobe Photoshop and Affinity Photo, and productivity apps like Dropbox and Google Drive. If you want to know why the Wine project prioritized ARM64EC support this time around, it's because the Windows-on-Arm app ecosystem is finally becoming relevant.Andrew CunninghamSenior Technology ReporterAndrew CunninghamSenior Technology Reporter Andrew is a Senior Technology Reporter at Ars Technica, with a focus on consumer tech including computer hardware and in-depth reviews of operating systems like Windows and macOS. Future committee activities will be focused solely on advancing our critical mission to protect the homeland and support DHS's strategic priorities."The memo said advisory board members terminated this week "are welcome to reapply." The Cyber Safety Review Board's list of members included security experts from the private sector and lead cybersecurity officials from multiple government agencies. The review board previously investigated a 2023 hack of Microsoft Exchange Online, producing a report that called out "a cascade of security failures at Microsoft." More recently, it has been investigating how the Chinese hacking group called Salt Typhoon infiltrated major telecom providers such as Verizon and AT&T.DHS said advisory boards push agendasSalt Typhoon attackers stole call records for many telecom customers, and reportedly accessed calls and messages for Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other government officials. US Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) was quoted by Reuters as saying that "disbanding the Cyber Safety Review Board while it's in the middle of investigating the most damaging breach of America's phone system in recent memory is a massive gift to the Chinese spies who targeted Trump, JD Vance and other top political figures."We contacted the Department of Homeland Security today, asking whether the Cyber Safety Review Board will be reconstituted and whether its work on Salt Typhoon will continue. The agency's public relations team didn't answer those questions but sent us a statement it attributed to an unnamed DHS senior official."Effective immediately, the Department of Homeland Security will no longer tolerate any advisory committee[s] which push agendas that attempt to undermine its national security mission, the President's agenda or Constitutional rights of Americans," the DHS statement said. The Cyber Safety Review Board operates under the DHS's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), which has been criticized by Republican lawmakers for allegedly trying to "surveil and censor Americans' speech on social media."Democrat: Board will be stacked with Trump loyalistsA Democratic lawmaker said that Trump appears ready to stack the Cyber Safety Review Board with "loyalists." House Committee on Homeland Security Ranking Member Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) made the criticism in his opening statement at a hearing today."Before I close, I would also like to express my concern regarding the dismissal of the non-government members of advisory committees inside the Department, including the Cyber Safety Review Board and the CISA Advisory Committee," Thompson's statement reads. "The CSRB is in the process of investigating the Salt Typhoon hack of nine major telecommunications companies, and it is a national security imperative that the investigation be completed expeditiously. I am troubled that the President's attempt to stack the CSRB with loyalists may cause its important work on the Salt Typhoon campaign to be delayed."Thompson said Republicans have been trying to shut down CISA over "false allegations and conspiracy theories." The conservative Heritage Foundation's Project 2025 alleged that "CISA has devolved into an unconstitutional censoring and election engineering apparatus of the political Left."The DHS memo dismissing board members was published yesterday by freelance cybersecurity reporter Eric Geller, who quoted an anonymous source as saying the Cyber Safety Review Board's review of Salt Typhoon is "dead." Geller wrote that other advisory boards affected by the mass dismissal include the Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board, the Critical Infrastructure Partnership Advisory Council, the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee, the National Infrastructure Advisory Council, and the Secret Service's Cyber Investigations Advisory Board."The CSRB was 'less than halfway' done with its Salt Typhoon investigation, according to a now-former member," Geller wrote. The former member was also quoted as saying, "There are still professional staff for the CSRB and I hope they will continue some of the work in the interim."House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (R-Tenn.) told Nextgov/FCW that "President Trump's new DHS leadership should have the opportunity to decide the future of the Board. This could include appointing new members, reviewing its structure, or deciding if the Board is the best way to examine cyber intrusions."Jon BrodkinSenior IT ReporterJon BrodkinSenior IT Reporter Jon is a Senior IT Reporter for Ars Technica.
