9 Nokia Employees Warned About iPhone But No One Listened
Ah, Nokia. The very name itself fills my 00s-kids heart with nostalgia about the simpler times, when everyone and their mother had some form of Nokia phone in their pocket, and the company itself absolutely dominated the mobile phone market, boasting a global market share of over 50% in 2007.Nowadays, few remember the smartphone Ozymandias, and even fewer can say they still own one of their models, with companies like Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi now reigning supreme, holding 19%, 17%, and 14% of the market, respectively. While these percentages are in the same ballpark, its Apples iPhone that most deserves the title of Nokia killer, as the Finnish giants decline began shortly after the iPhones debut in 2007, with its market share dropping from 50% to just 3% in a record-breaking five years.SSPL/GettyNokias history, however, could have taken a completely different turn, as according to a newly discovered presentation shared on January 10, 2007 a day after the iPhones reveal at least nine Nokia employees were aware of the potential threat posed by Apples smartphone and tried to warn about Apple becoming a serious competitor, meaning that the king of mobile phones had a head start but failed to leverage it and ultimately lost its crown.First spotted by Fahadx, the presentation was found in the Nokia Design Archive, unveiled earlier this month, and is titled Apple iPhone was launched (yes, it is iPhone). Despite its humorous title, the content itself is dead serious, outlining the best qualities of the then-novel smartphone and correctly predicting a significant market share impact by 2008.The presentation reveals that what concerned Nokia engineers the most were the new kid in the block OS X and the iPhones user interface. They noted that the UI may change the standards of the superior user experience for the whole market, and recommended the companys leadership to focus primarily on developing a touch UI to counter the threat.User interface has been a big strength for Nokia consumer research indicates this is in decline, the presentation reads. Urgent action needed to prevent further erosion of this position. Appoint Nokia Head of UI i.e. not tied to BG or platform. Nokia needs to develop touch UI to fight back. S60 should be focus, but Maemo platform can be a critical strength due to openness. The authors also speculated on Apples potential position in the handset, smartphone, and mobile platforms markets, correctly predicting that Steve Jobs company would become a Top-10 smartphone vendor and mobile platform, placing it just behind Nokia and its Symbian OS in second place a forecast that, in retrospect, may just be one of the greatest understatements in tech history:The presentation also features a detailed list outlining the recommended actions Nokia must take to stay on top, including advice such as prioritize touch UI development, analyse what could be Apples next release of iPhone mini to mass market price points and plan counter-measures for it, kill market for such an expensive device by filling mid-range with own/Google/Yahoo experiences, investigate and play hard in possible IPR infringements, and highlight potential weaknesses of the iPhone, among others:We highly encourage you to check out the full presentation here. Counter-Strike 2 Bug Allowing Texture Changes & Cheating Was Fixed
Players discovered a critical exploit in a new Counter-Strike 2 update, accidentally letting them bypass the server rules and change the game elements. However, Valve has already fixed the bug.As told by YouTuber MrMaxim, the bug allowed players to modify certain things in the game and play with the applied changes on official servers. The YouTuber explained that with the bug, players could replace specific files to modify textures and elements like doors, boxes, and even the player models, which could be used as a way to cheat and bypass the in-game limitations. The blogger suggested that probably playing with those changes wouldnt be regarded as cheating, though it was not certain. What is more, the exploit has reportedly been present in the game for about six months. However, it is said that the bug has now been fixed, though Valve didnt mention it in the latest patch notes, which focus on minor performance optimization for some CPU-bound cases, recoil setting during spectating, and support for updating existing map annotations on Steam Workshop. Also, check out these creative CS2 maps created by the game enthusiast Lillykyu, in which the creator combines the games world with the elements from other titles or even software:A Microsoft Paint map for Counter-Strike 2:A custom map that allows you to experience Jetpack Joyride entirely within Counter-Strike 2:A Fruit Ninja-inspired Counter-Strike 2 map:Dont forget to join our 80 Level Talent platform and our new Discord server, follow us on Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Telegram, TikTok, and Threads, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.Source link The post Counter-Strike 2 Bug Allowing Texture Changes & Cheating Was Fixed appeared first on CG SHARES.

10 Years Later, Endless Legend 2 Revealed With An Unsettling First Trailer
Just over a decade ago, Amplitude Studios released Endless Legend, an inventive 4X fantasy-strategy game. Now, Amplitude Studios is unveiling the sequel, Endless Legend 2, and sharing an early look at Saiadha, the oceanic world that will be featured in the game. The trailer below hints at the ultimate power behind Saiadha and reveals some grim implications about the nature of the world itself. The male speaker in the trailer is never identified by name, but he does describe himself as a god. More tellingly, the female whispers that accompany the male voice define this "god" in less flattering terms such as "prisoner" and "dust." The god also hints that the planet itself is his prison and the oceans are his chains. Regardless, the speaker is confident that one of the warring factions will eventually find him and potentially set him free.According to the game's description, players will "face ancient perils and new threats, and unravel the unfathomable secret that lies at the planet's core." If the male voice really is a god, then the core may be where he's been hidden away. As for Saiadha itself, the planet is prone to the whims of the monstrous waves. The entire landscape can be transformed by the impact of the water around it, which threatens any civilizations with cataclysm, death, and potentially starvation.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Doom: The Dark Ages Release In May With Giant Mech And Cybernetic Dragon Vehicles
Doom: The Dark Ages releases on May 15, Bethesda announced during a segment in today's Xbox Developer Direct showcase. The lengthy look at the upcoming prequel to Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal also showed much more detail about the weaponry, mission structure, and the story.Calling this entry a "return to form," Bethesda said that it aimed to shift the feeling of Doom again. Whereas Doom Eternal wanted to make you fight like a fighter jet, Dark Ages makes you an iron tank who can stand your ground. That's thanks largely to the versatility of the new Shield Saw. This piece of equipment lets you block, parry, and attack, with each function complementing your array of firearms. And, Bethesda noted, this means strafing is a viable strategy again. There's also a revised Glory Kill that's more contextual and varied based on your weapons and the angle you're facing the enemy demons.Though you'll be spending most of your time killing demons on foot as the Slayer, you'll also pilot both a giant mech and a cybernetic dragon. The studio noted that each has its own suite of abilities and minibosses to fight. In a deep dive into a mission, we saw the Slayer confronting a large battle taking place outside a medieval castle, with an open sandbox to discover secrets and resources. After breaking through the enemy lines, you can go back to the main castle gates to trigger what appears to be a giant boss battle.Continue Reading at GameSpot

On March 20, Assassin's Creed Shadows will welcome players to Japan's tumultuous Azuchi-Momoyama period as they step into the shoes of samurai Yasuke and shinobi Naoe. Working with these two protagonists, both of whom have a very distinct play style, was tricky for the Assassin's Creed Shadows development team, but it was also a lot of fun and allowed them to create a game that would truly feel unique for each player.
