WWW.THEVERGE.COMCanada will retaliate against Trump with tariffs on US goodsCanada will set its own tariffs against US goods in retaliation to broad 25 percent tariffs President Donald Trump announced Saturday on Canadian imports. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a 25 percent tariff on a total of $155 billion worth of American goods $30 billion of that on Tuesday when Trumps tariffs go into effect, then an additional $125 billion after 21 days. Trudeau also warned that the US tariffs will harm both countries economies, particularly the auto industry. This is a choice that, yes, will harm Canadians, but beyond that, it will have real consequences for you, the American people, he said in a press conference Saturday.Trudeau offered a far-reaching list of products that would be subject to import taxes, including American alcohol, orange juice, clothing, appliances, lumber, and plastics, along with much, much more. Non-tariff moves like reexamining public procurement policies are also on the table. However, he said that actions like limiting energy exports would require more careful consideration because no one part of the country should be carrying a heavier burden than any other. The sweeping US tariffs, which include a lower 10 percent tariff on energy products from Canada, are a major shift in trade policy between the two countries. Trump claims the tariffs which he also imposed on Mexico, and increased on goods from China are meant to incentivize these countries to stem the flow of illegal fentanyl into the US.The US tariffs include a clause seeking to prevent retaliation, outlets including The Wall Street Journal report, which would increase the penalties should the countries impacted impose their own tariffs. Despite this, Trudeau says that Canadas new tariffs are strong but appropriate in this case, and we will continue to defend Canada, Canadians, and our future.0 Comments 0 Shares

WWW.MARKTECHPOST.COMExploration Challenges in LLMs: Balancing Uncertainty and Empowerment in Open-Ended TasksLLMs have demonstrated impressive cognitive abilities, making significant strides in artificial intelligence through their ability to generate and predict text. However, while various benchmarks evaluate their perception, reasoning, and decision-making, less attention has been given to their exploratory capacity. Exploration, a key aspect of intelligence in humans and AI, involves seeking new information and adapting to unfamiliar environments, often at the expense of immediate rewards. Unlike exploitation, which relies on leveraging known information for short-term gains, exploration enhances adaptability and long-term understanding. The extent to which LLMs can effectively explore, particularly in open-ended tasks, remains an open question.Exploration has been widely studied in reinforcement learning and human cognition, typically categorized into three main strategies: random exploration, uncertainty-driven exploration, and empowerment. Random exploration introduces variability into actions, allowing discoveries through stochastic behavior. Uncertainty-driven exploration prioritizes actions with uncertain outcomes to reduce ambiguity and improve decision-making. Empowerment, by contrast, focuses on maximizing potential future possibilities rather than optimizing for specific rewards, aligning closely with scientific discovery and open-ended learning. While preliminary studies indicate that LLMs exhibit limited exploratory behaviors, current research is often restricted to narrow tasks such as bandit problems, failing to capture the broader dimensions of exploration, particularly empowerment-based strategies.Researchers at the Georgia Tech. examined whether LLMs can outperform humans in open-ended exploration using Little Alchemy 2, where agents combine elements to discover new ones. Their findings revealed that most LLMs underperformed compared to humans, except for the o1 model. Unlike humans, who balance uncertainty and empowerment, LLMs primarily rely on uncertainty-driven strategies. Sparse Autoencoder (SAE) analysis showed that uncertainty is processed in earlier transformer layers, while empowerment occurs later, leading to premature decisions. This study provides insights into LLMs limitations in exploration and suggests future improvements to enhance their adaptability and decision-making processes. The study used Little Alchemy 2, where players combine elements to discover new ones, assessing LLMs exploration strategies. Data from 29,493 human participants across 4.69 million trials established a benchmark. Four LLMsGPT-4o, o1, LLaMA3.1-8B, and LLaMA3.1-70Bwere tested, with varying sampling temperatures to examine exploration-exploitation trade-offs. Regression models analyzed empowerment and uncertainty in decision-making, while SAEs identified how LLMs represent these cognitive variables. Results showed that o1 significantly outperformed other LLMs, discovering 177 elements compared to humans 42, while other models performed worse, highlighting challenges in LLM-driven open-ended exploration. The study evaluates LLMs exploration strategies, highlighting o1s superior performance over humans (t = 9.71, p < 0.001), while other LLMs performed worse. Larger models showed improvement, with LLaMA3.1-70B surpassing LLaMA3.1-8B and GPT-4o slightly outperforming LLaMA3.1-70B. Exploration became harder in later trials, favoring empowerment-based strategies over uncertainty-driven ones. Higher temperatures reduced redundant behaviors but did not enhance empowerment. Analysis showed uncertainty was processed earlier than empowerment, influencing decision-making. Ablation experiments confirmed uncertaintys critical role, while empowerment had minimal impact. These findings suggest current LLMs struggle with open-ended exploration due to architectural limitations. In conclusion, the study examines LLMs exploratory capabilities in open-ended tasks using Little Alchemy 2. Most LLMs rely on uncertainty-driven strategies, leading to short-term gains but poor long-term adaptability. Only o1 surpasses humans by effectively balancing uncertainty and empowerment. Analysis with SAE reveals that uncertainty is processed in early transformer layers, while empowerment emerges later, causing premature decision-making. Traditional inference paradigms limit exploration capacity, though reasoning models like DeepSeek-R1 show promise. Future research should explore architecture adjustments, extended reasoning frameworks, and explicit exploratory objectives to enhance LLMs ability to engage in human-like exploration.Check out the Paper. 9TO5MAC.COMWhy Apple Vision Pros $3,500 price is actually a selling pointWe know Apple Watch saves lives, but did you know Apple Vision Pro is helping surgeons save lives? Harry McCracken reports for Fast Company that Apples Vision Pro is gaining traction in healthcare, particularly in surgery and medical training.Surgeons at UC San Diego Health have used the headset to streamline operating room displays, reducing physical strain and improving workflow. Meanwhile, Sharp HealthCare has launched a Spatial Computing Center of Excellence and is hosting a summit with 300 attendees exploring Vision Pros potential in surgery, medical education, and beyond. Apples Susan Prescott shared that even Apple has been surprised by how the medical field has adopted Apple Vision Pro. Perhaps even more surprising is what makes Apple Vision Pro effective in the operating room: its price.Heres Susan Prescott, Apple VP of dev relations and enterprise marketing, on AVPs surprising adoption rate in the medical field. Its a really exciting and timely moment to bring key industry leaders in healthcare together to not just sit there and listen to a bunch of keynotes, but to connect and talk and share how theyve used Vision Pro to take best practices and inspiration from peers.Sometimes enterprises take a little time to adopt technology. This one is even surprising us in the alacrity with which the product is being used and the apps are being built.UC San Diego Health surgeon Ryan Broderick explains exactly how AVP excels in the operating room:For [a] monitor to be in the ideal position for surgery, it really should just be directly in front of your head without having to turn your neck or adjust your body, explains Dr. Broderick. But often inlaparoscopy, you have to adjust your body, turn your neck, and be in uncomfortable positions. And with repeated use like that, it can lead to tight muscles, neck injury, back injury. In addition to providing real-time passthrough for seeing your environment, Apple Vision Pro allows you to be surrounded by virtual windows that you position and resize directly in front of you. Apple Vision Pro is powered by the companys M2 chip found in Macs and iPads. Meanwhile, Apples custom R1 chip is responsible for making sense of all the sensors on Apple Vision Pro. Prescott describes how the R1 is helping surgeons actually save lives. We have the R1 chip thats taking the feedback from the sensors and processing eight times faster than the human eye can blink, says Prescott. Thats great for anti-nausea, to help make sure people dont feel unwell. But its also great as feeds are coming in with live, literally lifesaving, information.Because Apple Vision Pro provides such high fidelity passthrough, surgeons are able to rely on the headset for significant ergonomic improvements:Dr. Brodericks team got its hands on a loaner Vision Pro and worked with UC San Diego Health chief clinical and innovation officer Dr. Christopher Longhust to assemble a system capable of streaming video feeds and overlaying them on the live view of a surgery in progress, greatly reducing the need to crane necks. In short order, the idea became a trial that involved real patients and is currently undergoing peer review. Weve done over 50 cases and have had great success thus far, says Dr. Broderick. But back to the Apple Vision Pros $3500+ price. In the piece, Susan Prescott provides a particularly interesting remark about the cost of AVP:Obviously, its a V1 product, and the price, for now, is what the price is, acknowledges Prescott. While that line could be dissected and analyzed for as long as it takes to release Apple Vision Air, lets return to the reason Apple Vision Pro is such a value in the operating room. Tommy Korn, an ophthalmologist with Sharp HealthCare, tells Fast Company that the monitors used for the operating room run $20,000 each. Apple Vision Pro as both a source of ergonomic relief and a value in the operating room? Thats certainly not the typical narrative that follows Apple Vision Pro.Read Harry McCrackens piece in full at Fast Company.
