  • European embedded banking startup Swan adds another $44 million to its Series B
    techcrunch.com
French startup Swan has raised another 42 million (around $44 million at current exchange rates). The company considers this round as the second part of the Series B round that was originally announced in September 2024.Swan helps other companies offer financial products at scale. The company can generate both virtual and physical cards that work with Apple Pay and Google Pay. Cards can be configured programmatically by Swans corporate clients with spending limits, authorized merchants, and more.It can also create payment accounts with an individual IBAN. This way, accounts support pay-ins, pay-outs, and even SEPA direct debits. These accounts can be used as the source of money for the payment cards.Several fast-growing companies have chosen Swan as their embedded banking partner. For instance, Pennylane, a French accounting startup that became a unicorn last year, now offers accounts and payment cards to its customers and relies on Swan for those features.Similarly, Indy, an all-in-one administrative assistant for freelancers, turned to Swan to add accounts and cards to its offerings. Other customers include Agicap, Factorial, Lucca, and Sesame.Overall, Swan works with 150 companies and processes 1.5 billion in monthly transactions. Eight Road Ventures is leading the second tranche with existing investors Lakestar, Accel, Creandum, Hexa, and Bpifrance participating again; Bpifrance originally invested in Swans seed round through its Digital Venture fund.We believe the embedded finance opportunity is immense, and that banking services will increasingly be offered directly where users are, within existing software and workflows. Weve known Nicolas and his team since their early days and have been consistently impressed by their rapid progress, Tier 1 customer base, and successful international expansion, Eight Roads Ventures partner Lucile Cornet said in a statement. While the company isnt disclosing its valuation, Swans co-founder and CEO Nicolas Benady told TechCrunch that its higher than it used to be. Were not a unicorn yet, so we dont mention it, he said. While many fintech startups are building products on top of other fintech APIs and products, Swan has built its own core banking system. Thats why it can offer local IBANs and add country-specific payment products. As for Swans customers, having the option to handle money without handling money directly is an interesting opportunity. Swan handles compliance and KYC obligations (know your customer). With Thursdays funding round, Swan will continue to expand to more countries, with Italy being next on the roadmap.

  • Rivian Revving To Rival Tesla With Level 3 Autonomy And Voice AI Plans
    www.forbes.com
Rivian voice AI is on the roadmap, says CEO RJ ScaringeRivianIn an effort to rival Tesla, vast AI integration is underway at Rivian with the development of its next generation EV platform, funded in part by a $5 billion partnership with Volkswagen. At a press event in San Francisco last Thursday, CEO RJ Scaringe and Chief Software Officer, and Co-CEO of the Rivian Volkswagen Technology Joint Venture, Wassym Bensaid, shared details of the electric carmakers AI roadmap.Scaringe announced the company is planning to go hands free in 2025, with eyes off the road in 2026 for Level 3 autonomy, as he described it. Level 2 being hands on the wheel, eyes on the road with driver assist, like that currently available in the Rivian Autonomy Platform with lane-changing, park assist, cruise control and collision warning. Level 3 being hands off the wheel, eyes on the road, where drivers can text or read a book, but are in the drivers seat ready to take control of the car, if needed. And Level 4 being hands off the wheel, eyes off the road, in robotaxi mode, with no one in the drivers seat or even in the car.We think theres an enormous value to customers to having a robust, first Level 2, but importantly Level 3 in very specific domains, Scaringe said. Imagine a world where you leave your house, youre still in the vehicle, but you get on the highway and you have all of your time back. You can be on your phone, writing emails. You dont have to be looking at the road. You dont have to be grabbing the wheel to say, Im still here. The vehicle is capable of doing that, and thats going to be for us. Thats absolutely on the roadmap. Something were hyper focused on.A Rivian you can chat withAI will be pervasive throughout the entire vehicle, and will unlock lots of new capabilities, whether it's for self driving and autonomy with our end-to-end training approach or the in-cabin experience within the vehicle, Bensaid explained.MORE FOR YOUAs to when drivers will be able to ask their Rivian what a blinking red light on the dashboard meansa capability Amazon built into AWS Bedrock over a year ago, and is currently being rolled out to Volkswagens with ChatGPT integrationBensaid responded that Rivians will soon be able to tell the driver what is happening as well as book service appointments in anticipation of problems.Imagine everything that you're doing today where you're touching the UI. In the future, you will be able to do that through voice. And when you think about it, when you're driving, it's really actually way safer to interact through the voice, he said.Rivian CEO RJ ScaringeMartine ParisA cheaper RivianOf course, many nifty features are possible with software defined vehicles, its just a matter of resource allocation, Scaringe said, explaining AI-controlled massage seats are not at the top of the list, nor are extended batteries. If we were to say yes to all the countless great ideas, we would have a car that costs $300,000, so the magic of the product development process is to make thousands and thousands of trade offs.He explained that even if they got battery costs down to $60 per kilowatt-houra significant drop from the industry average of $115 per kilowatt-hour achieved last year, according to BloombergNEFthe cost to add range in an electric vehicle is still really high. Of Rivians three battery pack choices, the most popular has been their mid-sized battery pack which gets 300 plus miles of range, Scaringe said. Customers would much rather see price come down.Although the company has sold little more than 51,000 Rivians, its ambition is to sell millions, which a cheaper, more compact vehicle might help them achieve. To that end, Rivian is planning for growth and recently finalized a loan with the U.S. Department of Energy for up to $6.6 billion to build its Georgia plant. It also has been stepping up its pace of opening showrooms and service centers across the US.

(Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)Getty ImagesEA UFC 5 has a new update coming on Thursday, January 30.The latest update will deliver rising flyweight Asu Almabayev and some new Alter Egos. For those who arent aware, the Alter Egos are secondary versions of current and past fighters. Some capture fighters from a historic performance or a certain era of their career, and there is a group that consists of fantasy iterations of top stars. We dont know which fighters will be included, but I can think of five relatively recent and some historic performances worthy of an Alter Ego.Here are five fighters who should have an Alter Ego added to the game.UFC 311 - Merab DvalishviliINGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - JANUARY 18: Merab Dvalishvili of Georgia poses for a portrait after his ... (Photo by Mike Roach/Zuffa LLC)Zuffa LLCThe victory and performance are fresh, but Dvalishvilis win over Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC 311 in Inglewood, California, is one of the greatest performances in UFC mens bantamweight history.Dvalishvili overcame an opponent who is legit and championship-caliber, and he had to come from behind to get it done. The champion secured seven takedowns, though 23 of them were stuffed, and he showed the kind of gas tank that most can only dream of having as part of their toolbox. The champion has won 13 fights in a row. Its time for a five-star version of Dvalishvili.UFC 162 - Chris WeidmanLAS VEGAS, NV - JULY 06: (R-L) Chris Weidman punches Anderson Silva in their UFC middleweight ... He thought he might be retiring, but the Global Fight League came calling, and Weidman answered. In any case, he is a future Hall of Famer who realizes his time in the UFC is over. Weidman is one of three men to have successfully defended the middleweight title three times or more (Anderson Silva and Israel Adesanya are the others). He has an Alter Ego in the game, but its from UFC 187Weidmans first-round TKO win over Vitor Belfort. It turned out to be Weidmans last successful title defense. Weidmans most iconic win is his first victory over Silva at UFC 162 in July 2013.Weidman slept a clowning Silva to dethrone a legend. That performance needs to be an Alter Ego.UFC Fight Night Sweden 2017 - Alexander GustafssonSTOCKHOLM, SWEDEN - MAY 28: (R-L) Alexander Gustafsson punches Glover Teixeira in their light ... Also like Weidman, Gustafsson has an Alter Ego in the game already. However, Gustafssons AE comes from a fight he losthis classic battle with Jon Jones in 2013 at UFC 165.Gustafsson was great in that fight, but he lost. Perhaps a better version of Gustafsson to add came from his TKO win over Glover Teixeira in his home country of Sweden in 2017.With the lights shining bright in a home game, Gustafsson put on a boxing display, culminating in a series of filthy uppercuts that knocked out the rugged Brazilian. Gustafsson even proposed to his girlfriend Moa in the Octagon following the win.STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN - MAY 28: Alexander Gustafsson proposes to his girlfriend Moa Antonia Johansson ... Probably, but then again, neither does the pound-for-pound No. 1 fighter on Earth, Islam Makhachev. But thats another story.Pea is now in her second reign as champion, and she defeated a legend to win the title the first time. At UFC 269, Pea dropped and choked out the great Amanda Nunes to become the UFC womens bantamweight champion. That win is Alter Ego-worthy.UFC 216 - Demetrious JohnsonLAS VEGAS, NV - OCTOBER 07: Demetrious Johnson secures an arm bar submission against Ray Borg in ... (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)Zuffa LLC via Getty ImagesThe greatest flyweight in history does not have an Alter Ego in EA UFC 5. DJ has had several great performances in his career. However, the one that sticks out to me is his submission win over Ray Borg at UFC 216 in 2017.The Mouse Trap submission is still the greatest non-KO finish Ive ever seen. If its at all possible for EA to hook Mighty Mouse up with an Alter Ego, this is the performance to highlight. As for EA UFC 6, I would be shocked if we made it to International Fight Week without the game being officially announced, or at the very least, received some news on it. Stay tuned.

  • Nvidia Reflex: what it is and why you should enable it
    www.digitaltrends.com
Table of ContentsTable of ContentsWhat is Nvidia Reflex? How does Reflex work? How to enable Nvidia ReflexWhat games support Nvidia Reflex?Nvidia Reflex 2In competitive gaming, victory isnt just about who pulls the trigger firstits often about whose PC responds the fastest. Identifying your input lag is the first step to eliminating it, and Nvidia Reflex is an excellent tool to help. In some games, it doesnt just measure latencyit actively works to reduce it.Once you have a high-performance gaming CPUand a powerful graphics card, the best way to make your PC more suited to competitive play is to shave off a few milliseconds in input lag. Heres how to use Nvidia Reflex to do just that.It might even give you a competitive advantage.Recommended VideosNvidia Reflex is a suite of GPU, G-Sync display, and software technologies that help in measuring and reducing system latency. By doing so, it allows the PC and the display to respond faster to mouse and keyboard inputs, essentially allowing you to target and kill enemies faster and with greater precision.Get your weekly teardown of the tech behind PC gaming Just like Deep Learning Super Sampling, Reflex Low Latency mode is a proprietary technology that requires a Nvidia graphics card. While having a recent GPU like one of the RTX 40-series, ensures the best experience, Reflex can work with any model, including the GTX 900 and above. It works by optimizing the GPU and the game to provide you with the low-latency best performance.Certain games also offer a Reflex+Boost setting, which increases your GPUs clock speeds, especially if you are playing games that are CPU intensive, thus preventing any potential bottlenecks.Reflex can help lower rendering lag by as much as 80% and works best with first-person shooters like Apex Legends, Valorant, Call of Duty, Fortnite, and others. It isnt designed to affect system performance, but there have been some instances of it having a mild impact on average frame rates. The improved responsiveness that comes from a reduced input lag, however, should be well worth it especially if youre playing competitively. To optimize and reduce your system latency, Reflex uses a combination of SDKs and driver optimizations to effectively remove any bottlenecks between the CPU and GPU. This allows each frame to be rendered by the GPU as soon as the CPU passes it along, with no waiting behind existing rendering jobs. The end result can be a dramatic reduction in put lag. Depending on the kind of hardware and peripherals you have, you can shave tens of milliseconds off your system latency. That can have a real, tangible effect on your gameplay performance. Its also possible for game developers to improve the game latency performance through additional optimizations.NvidiaThere are two primary components of Reflex. First is the Reflex SDK, a set of APIs meant for game developers to reduce and measure rendering latency. Using the SDK, developers can integrate Reflex directly with their games. This allows latency reductions above and beyond existing driver-only techniques like Nvidias Ultra Low Latency Mode. The second one is Reflex Latency Analyzer, which, as the name suggests, is a system latency measurement tool. It is currently available on 360Hz G-Sync Esports displays from Acer, Alienware, Asus, and MSI, as well as esports peripherals from Asus, Logitech, Razer, and SteelSeries. This tech can detect clicks coming from your mouse and then measure the time it takes for the resulting pixels to change on the screen.Image used with permission by copyright holderNvidia Reflex can be enabled in individual games by heading to your games graphics settings. Each game is different, so you might have to search for it, but it should typically be in the options or game settings menu.Heres an example of Apex Legends:Image used with permission by copyright holderOnce you open the game, select on the Options (gear symbol) button on the bottom right and then click on Settings.Image used with permission by copyright holderNext, select the Video settings on the top, and under Advanced, you should see the option to enable Nvidia Reflex. Some games also have a separate option called Nvidia Reflex+Boost. Enabling it can improve GPU performance to further reduce latency.Theres a long list of games that support Nvidia Reflex in some form. Some can only give you latency stats, others offer support for the auto-configured Reflex analyzer, and another bunch support Reflex Low Latency. Some standouts include Apex Legends, Battlefield 2042, Valorant, Hogwarts Legacy, and Counter-Strike 2.More games are being added all the time, so keep an eye on the full list available on Nvidias website for the latest releases, including supported peripherals. At this years CES, Nvidia unveiled its new RTX 50-series graphics card lineup. Along with that, the company announced Reflex 2, the next-generation upgrade to its latency-reduction technology. Building on the success of the original Nvidia Reflex, Reflex 2 will introduce advancements to further minimize system latency by up to 75%, making gaming even more responsive and immersive. With Frame Interpolation and expanded hardware support, Reflex 2 is claimed to enhance both competitive gameplay and general gaming experiences across a broader range of devices. One of the most significant new features in Reflex 2 is Frame Interpolation, also known as Frame Warp. This technology analyzes rendered frames in real-time and inserts additional interpolated frames to reduce perceived latency. By predicting and adjusting for player input, Frame Interpolation is said to create a smoother and more responsive gaming experience, even in graphically intensive scenarios which is more prone to latency spikes. This could particularly be useful for gamers using mid-range or older hardware, as it helps mitigate latency without compromising visual quality or performance.Reflex 2 also extends its reach to more gaming monitors and peripherals, with increased compatibility for Reflex Latency Analyzer. This expanded hardware ecosystem allows gamers to measure and optimize latency with precision, ensuring that they are getting the most responsive experience possible. During the announcement, Nvidia said that it is collaborating with game developers to bring Reflex 2 support to a growing library of titles, ensuring widespread adoption across popular genres like first-person shooters, MOBAs, and battle royales.Nvidia will introduce Reflex 2 on The Finals and Valorant, initially launching on RTX 50-series GPUs. Support for other older RTX GPUs is expected to arrive in a future update.Editors Recommendations

  • What's New (And Worrisome) in Quantum Security?
    www.informationweek.com
John Edwards, Technology Journalist & AuthorJanuary 30, 20255 Min ReadBartlomiej Wroblewski via Alamy Stock PhotoA growing number of security experts are warning that quantum computing might soon devastate existing cryptographic systems, leading to a security crisis that could devastate businesses and governments worldwide.Researchers and other security experts are drawing a direct parallel between the pending quantum security danger and the notorious Y2K threat, only on a much larger scale. In essence, the current basic and widely-used encryption mechanisms, such as factorization-based cryptography, are highly vulnerable to quantum computings processing power.AvalancheThe major security issue is the ability of quantum computers to rapidly break cryptographic algorithms, which are used in multiple security architectures and products, says Doug Saylors, partner and cybersecurity lead, with global technology research and advisory firm ISG. He notes in an email interview that modern cryptography is easily broken by quantum computing. As a result, file encryption becomes completely worthless. "Imagine every private conversation, every strategic plan, every forecast or product under development, all out in the open for public consumption, from competitors to suppliers to partners," Saylors states. The reputation damage alone, he believes, "could be bankruptcy-inducing."Related:Cryptographers have demonstrated that quantum computers can break asymmetric encryption algorithms, such as RSA and ECC, which are widely used for secure communication and digital signatures, says Archana Ramamoorthy, senior director, regulated and trusted cloud, at Google Cloud. This vulnerability can enable attacks, such as 'store now, decrypt later'. "As a result, the longevity of hardware firmware signatures generated by similar asymmetric encryption algorithms is also threatened," she warns in an online interview. "In contrast, symmetric cryptography appears less vulnerable to quantum attacks."Everybody KnowsQuantum security's biggest challenge is identifying the exact date on which a solution will be needed, says Tom Patterson, quantum security global lead at business advisory firm Accenture, in an email interview. "Unlike Y2K, when we knew exactly when it would happen, but we didnt know what would happen, with QDAY we know exactly what will happen and what to do about it, but we're not sure if it's needed in a day or a decade." The challenge for IT and security leaders today, he adds, "is where to slot quantum security into their five-year plan, and how best to get started today."Responding to the threat quantum computing poses to current asymmetric algorithms, leading organizations, including the U.S. National Institute for Science and Technologies (NIST), are now working with researchers worldwide to create and test cryptographic algorithms that are resistant to the power of quantum computers. "The aim is to standardize these quantum-resistant algorithms and complete a thorough crypto analysis," Ramamoorthy says.Related:According to Ramamoorthy, NIST has already endorsed three quantum-safe algorithms, based on extensive research and analysis by the global cryptographic community: FIPS 203, FIPS 204 and FIPS 205. "These algorithms address key exchange for secure communications and digital hashes used in various cryptographic operations," she says, adding that NIST is also considering additional algorithms to further bolster the security of digital certificates. "This ongoing work is crucial to safeguarding the privacy and security of our digital lives and ensuring that our communications remain confidential and protected."The FutureThe solution side of quantum security is advancing even faster than quantum computers themselves, Patterson observes. "We now have the first of many new NIST encryption standards that aren't susceptible to a quantum computing decryption attack, which is great progress and great news." He adds that "crypto agility, a data encryption practice used to ensure a rapid response to a cryptographic threat, is gaining traction, helping enterprises to actively manage new NIST standards as they appear.Related:There are also advances being made in using quantum information science itself to defend against quantum computing attacks. With new research, development, and early deployments of quantum key distribution (QKD), a secure communication method that implements a cryptographic protocol incorporating components of quantum mechanics which, when perfected, will provide a way to exchange keys anywhere without fear of compromise, the future looks far from hopeless.Closing TimeQuantum security is a good-news story in that there are already solutions to mitigate the critical new risk, Patterson says. He believes that upgrading old and vulnerable encryption methods early will help enterprises save time and money while lowering current and future risks. "While there's a cost to do the upgrade, running on the latest secure encryption is no more expensive than running old vulnerable encryption, so it's good from a budgeting perspective as well."The light at the end of the tunnel is the fact that quantum computing can be used to defend against quantum attacks, and researchers are already beginning to catalog presumed attack vectors and design countermeasures, Saylors says. "We're still three to five years out from the potential for an attack, but quantum-based countermeasures could prevent the attack from spreading to other organizations."About the AuthorJohn EdwardsTechnology Journalist & AuthorJohn Edwards is a veteran business technology journalist. • Zuckerberg tips hat to Musk over fact-checking: 'I'm not afraid to admit when someone does something better'
    www.businessinsider.com
Zuckerberg tipped his hat to X's Community Notes system during a Meta earnings call on Wednesday. He called it more effective than Meta's prior system of using third-party fact-checkers.Zuckerberg and Musk have sparred over the years, but seem to agree on this approach.Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg praised Elon Musk's X and its Community Notes system during an earnings call on Wednesday, and defended Meta's decision to replace third-party fact-checkers with a similar crowdsourced approach. When asked by an analyst how Meta's recent decision to kill traditional fact-checking could impact content quality, user growth, and advertising, Zuckerberg said X's model, which lets users add context to posts, is "more effective" than Meta's prior system."I'm not afraid to admit when someone does something that's better than us. It's our job to implement the best system," he said, adding that Meta's platforms were "going to get better because of it."Zuckerberg and Musk have sparred over the years, even threatening in 2023 to go at it in a cage fight. So it's notable when the tech billionaires agree on something. Indeed, this is the second time in the last few weeks that Zuckerberg has publicly credited X's approach to content moderation. In a January 7 video announcing Meta's policy changes, Zuckerberg said: "We are going to get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with Community Notes, similar to X."Musk approved, writing "This is cool" in an X post. Meta's chief global affairs officer, Joel Kaplan, reiterated Zuckerberg's point in a blog post on Meta's website. "We've seen this approach work on X where they empower their community to decide when posts are potentially misleading and need more context, and people across a diverse range of perspectives decide what sort of context is helpful for other users to see," Kaplan wrote about Community Notes, and added that it was an approach that was "less prone to bias."Community Notes on Meta's platform, Kaplan noted, would require people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives to agree with each other to prevent biased ratings. "Just like they do on X," he wrote.Do you work at Meta? Contact this reporter from a nonwork email and device at pdixit@insider.com or pranavdixit@protonmail.com.
