• Trump orders USDA to take down websites referencing climate crisis
    www.theguardian.com
On Thursday, the Trump administration ordered the US agriculture department to to take down its websites documenting or referencing the climate crisis.By Friday, the landing pages on the United States Forest Service website for key resources, research and adaptation tools including those that provide vital context and vulnerability assessments for wildfires had gone dark, leaving behind an error message or just a single line: You are not authorized to access this page. The government website was one of many that were affected on Friday by new directives from the Trump administration on what information federal agencies can publish.Several went dark on Friday as agencies scrambled to comply with Donald Trumps executive orders declaring his administration would recognize only two genders and ordering an end to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. The changes at the Forest Service website followed a directive issued by the United States Department of Agricultures office of communications. In the memo, which was reviewed by the Guardian, officials instructed website managers across the agency to identify and archive or unpublish any landing pages focused on climate change . It also included a Friday deadline to list the mentions in a spreadsheet for further review. On Friday, USDA officials clarified that the content should not be deleted. USDA needs to adhere to requirements around records retention, so Archive or Unpublish landing pages focused on climate change, an email sent to agency public affairs directors read.As of publication, the USDAs Climate Hubs helpful sites that connect producers to local programs and research are still live, but many sites were down, including the USFS Climate Change Resource Center, the Climate Action Tracker and the National Roadmap for Responding to Climate Change. The sites featured important tools and information to help mitigate the effects of the climate crisis and research. For now, the administration has effectively barred access to dozens of programs set up to help a wide range of communities from farmers to firefighters as they navigate changing conditions. The changes are part of a dizzying flurry of orders reshaping the federal governments policies on global heating.Trump repealed environmental protections put in place by Joe Biden, declared a energy emergency to hasten already-booming fossil fuel extraction and withdrew from the Paris climate agreement. The administration also added confusion and chaos within federal agencies by halting hiring and pausing projects, along with issuing a widespread buyout offer that would guarantee federal workers pay and benefits through September 2025 if they resign within the next week.Changes at other federal websites on Friday signaled other major shifts in policy.skip past newsletter promotionSign up to Headlines USFree newsletterGet the most important US headlines and highlights emailed direct to you every morningPrivacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. The Infectious Diseases Society of America, a medical association, issued a statement decrying the removal of information about HIV and people who are transgender. Access is critical to efforts to end the HIV epidemic, the organizations leaders said.It is unclear what the agencies will do with the websites or the policies and studies once detailed on them; links to the landing pages are still live, even if the information on each page has been archived. The Associated Press contributed reporting

  • Online Movement 50501 Calls for National '50 States' Anti-Trump Protest Planned for Feb 5
    www.newsweek.com
CLOSE X By Monica Sager Live News Reporter The 50501 Movementor 50 states, 50 protests, one dayis garnering support throughout social media over its plan to stage demonstrations across the nation to "fight Fascism" on February 5.Why It MattersThe protests are against President Donald Trump and his actions during his first two weeks back in the White House. He has issued a flurry of executive orders, fulfilling campaign promises such as clamping down on illegal immigration and pardoning people who took part in the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.Former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Mark Milley has called Trump a "fascist to the core," while former Trump Chief of Staff John Kelly said the president "certainly falls into the general definition of fascist."A protester holds a sign that reads "Make America Great Again. Impeach Trump!" outside of the Trump National Doral golf resort on December 17, 2019, in Doral, Florida. A protester holds a sign that reads "Make America Great Again. The information and start time vary by location.Information on 50501 Movement's Instagram at the time of writing indicates that meetings will take place at the following times (local) and locations:Arizona State Capitol at noonCalifornia State Capitol Building at noonColorado State Capitol Building at noonFlorida Tampa City Hall at 3 p.m.Georgia Centennial Park at 2 p.m.Idaho State Capitol steps at 11 a.m.Illinois State Capitol Building at noonIndiana State Capitol Building at noonIowa State Capitol at noonKansas State Capitol Building at 4 p.m.Kentucky State Capitol Building at noonMassachusetts Statehouse at noonMichigan State Capitol at noonMinnesota St. Paul Technical College at noonMississippi State Capitol at noonMissouri State Capitol Building at noonMontana State Capitol at noonNebraska State Capitol at 4 p.m.New Hampshire Statehouse at noonNew Jersey Statehouse at noonNew York Capitol Building at noon and New York City Hall at 2 p.m.North Carolina State Capitol Building at noonOhio Statehouse at noon and Willard Park at 4 p.m.Oklahoma State Capitol at noonOregon State Capitol Building at noonPennsylvania State Capitol Complex at 11 a.m., Williams S. Capitol Building at 11 a.m.Wisconsin State Capitol at 11 a.m.Wyoming Capitol at 2 p.m. Flyers indicate that the events are to speak out against Project 2025, the Trump administration, "attempts to destroy our freedoms and human rights" and "protest for freedom of speech, racial equality, women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, public health and safety, gun violence, climate change, wealth equity."The First Amendment allows for people to assemble and express their views through a protest. Police and other governmental officials are allowed to place certain restrictions, however, including shutting down a protest through a dispersal order if there is a danger of riot or disorder. A permit to march in the streets or on sidewalks is not needed as long as marchers are not obstructing car or pedestrian traffic. At the same time, counter protesters also have free speech rights.Protests erupted across the country last weekend in response to Trump's immigration crackdown, which includes mass deportation and raids targeting illegal immigrants. What People Are SayingCitizen Rosengarten, an organizer of the Springfield protest, told Newsweek: "The Illinois Citizens 50501 Movement has requested the permits to meet on the Capitol grounds. We have also received substantial threats of violence from MAGA groups, so we're meeting on Capitol grounds to guarantee that they will be limited in their efforts to harass/silence/harm us."Cristin Wormuth, who is helping to organize the protest in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, told Newsweek: "I can see how our democracy is being eroded, and the foundational principles of our country are being challenged in a way that will do irreparable harm to our nation. Regardless of what political party someone supports, all Americans should protect our constitutional rights."Reddit user a-friendly_guy: "It's supposed to be a self-organizing protest that is put together by the people, spreading virally as an idea and simultaneously inculcating new developing leaders who step out their comfort shell to decide necessary details for each of their specific state's protests."Some states seem well organized and some don't. There seems to be some 11th-hour confusions since many are asking the same few questions about the time to meet, and now on doubts about its legitimacy or concerns over counter-protesters."I am staying tuned to see how it goesbut I think it's an earnest attempt to get something started on a national scale, despite many glaring holes in its planning."Reddit user sudsmcdiddy: "Y'all I'm genuinely worried for a lot of these people. I see some of them saying things like, 'It's a peaceful protest, we have a legal right to it!' Even though they openly acknowledge the U.S. is very quickly going full fascis (...) The alarmist in me worries that they might be walking into a huge, dangerous trap."Reddit user cornflakegirl: "I'm expecting infiltrators [to] cause problems which will justify a crackdown. I still think protests should happen, but I hope people go in prepared for pepper spray and rubber bullets."Think. Again. on Democratic Underground: "I believe it's just the first of many."What Happens NextProtests are expected to take place on Wednesday.Update 2/3/25, 1:44 p.m. ET: This article has been updated with comment from the Illinois 50501 Movement and additional information.Update 2/3/25, 4 p.m. ET: This article has been updated with additional information.Update 2/3/25, 6 p.m. ET: This article has been updated with additional information. • The Fantastic Four: First Steps' first trailer really wants you to know what everyone's powers are, forgets that this is the third time we've seen them on the big screen
    www.vg247.com
A Happy FamilyThe Fantastic Four: First Steps' first trailer really wants you to know what everyone's powers are, forgets that this is the third time we've seen them on the big screenExcept for Mr. Fantastic himself, for some reason.Image credit: Marvel News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Feb. 4, 2025 Marvel kept everyone waiting long enough, but the first trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps has finally arrived.Seriously, when I say Marvel kept everyone waiting, I meant it - ahead of actually showing off the trailer, the teaser from yesterday that said launch coverage would be kicking off today forgot to mention that we'd have to wait a whole hour before actually showing the trailer, and even then there was some preamble with the Fantastic Four themselves before it actually got to what everyone was there for. So, how is the trailer itself, you might be asking? Well, for once, it actually looks like Marvel is using sets again, a big change from the years and years of green screen only sets, so that's a nice change of pace.Watch on YouTubeIt also shows a bit of family life amongst the four of them, as well as some quick glimpses at whoever John Malkovich is playing, alongside the big bad Galactus staring down the Statue of Liberty. Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards also takes the time to run through everyone's powers, i.e. Ben Grimm being covered in rocks, Johnny Storm lighting himself on fire, and Sue Storm turning invisible, though he doesn't mention his own powers, and weirdly enough the trailer doesn't show him using them either from what I can see. So I guess we'll have to wait for another trailer for that to happen - unless they're decided to go in a different direction with the character, which would be unwise. Besides, this is the second time the characters have been rebooted, I doubt many people need them explained anyway. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Obviously you'll also notice that this is not the New York we've seen throughout different MCU films, but one set in an ever so slightly alternate universe where it's still the '60s. Not the greatest of decades for America, but a stylish one, I suppose. I'm sure there'll be some kind of tease as to how the four of them end up in the main universe. For now, you'll just have to wait until it releases on July 25, later this year.

  • BIT.TRIP Runner Dev Is Bringing Back An Atari Classic With A Twist
    www.nintendolife.com
Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube795kAtari has announced that the 1976 brick-breaking arcade classic Breakout is making a comeback. Breakout Beyond is being developed by Runner3 team Choice Provisions and sees the classic's vertical orientation getting flipped on its side.As you can see in the reveal trailer above, the Pong-like paddles now slide up and down the left side of the screen (as opposed to the bottom in the original) and the screen scrolls right to the goal. Breaking bricks is still a big part of the score-chasing game, but it seems that Choice Provisions has made things a little spicier with scrolling and modern pyrotechnics, as well as some two-player co-op.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube795kWatch on YouTube Scheduled for "later this year" on PC and consoles, it's worth noting that this was originally planned as an Amico Intellivision exclusive, although Atari apparently "agreed to acquire and complete the development". Atari acquired the Intellivision brand back in May last year. Here are some features from the official PR blurb, plus some screens:- Unlockable endless mode with an online global leaderboard- 72 challenging levels that will put players brick-breaking skills to the test- Two-player co-op to manage (or ramp up) the chaos with a friend- Procedural audio and visual effects that increase in intensity with each comboImages: AtariThis one comes after Dreams Incorporated (Cris Tales) brought back Lunar Lander in Beyond form in April 2024. Breakout itself previously returned on Switch as part of the Recharged series in 2022, and the company has been acquiring and reviving vintage IP for while now, continuing to publish retro-themed games that put fresh spins on old favourites. Not all of them have landed, but we applaud the commitment 'new' Atari is showing after years of sus branding deals and low-quality mini consoles that drastically lowered the company's standing for many fans.It remains to be seen if flipping the screen sideways will work for Breakout - or if there'll be a TATE mode which lets you flip your Switch on its side and restores the original's verticality. • LinkedIn amps up vertical video tools as uploads jump 36%
    techcrunch.com
Video reigns supreme on social media like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. And now, video is becoming a bigger business for LinkedIn.The Microsoft-owned social network for the working world has yet to go full TikTok. But with a big boost of usage today it said that video uploads jumped by 36% compared to last year, while video creation on the platform itself grew 100% LinkedIn is adding in more features to woo more video activity: a new full-screen vertical video display for all users (not just those on mobile), along with a number of new tools to boost viewer engagement. The updates a week after Microsoft reported earnings that disclosed LinkedIn growing revenues by 9% in the last year (with premium subscriptions passing $2 billion in revenue). The company now has over 1 billion users, so its a sure bet that in its drive to make more money, it will also be leaning into economies of scale around advertising and paid features.Video will inevitably be a major component of that because of the stickiness and popularity of the medium, not just generally on social media but on LinkedIn in particular: last week it disclosed that video viewership was up 36% on last year. The new vertical video feed for web pages is a natural development, given that LinkedIn had already been seeing strong engagement with that format on mobile, where it had first launched. As with the mobile experience, the new vertical web experience will allow people to select single videos, and then swipe or click from them to more videos in their feed. This is not yet a full-screen player for video a la TikTok or Instagram. We first reported on that test in March 2024, and LinkedIn confirms this remains in test and feedback mode.Meanwhile, it appears LinkedIn is going ahead and rolling out a number of features in aid of that future experience. For example, users will now see a new profile preview feature to see a creators profile without leaving the video, with a much more prominent follow button appearing in the interface.LinkedIn is also adding more video content into its search results, with a new video carousel appearing alongside other links. (It will be facinating to see how many opt for these results rather than text-based ones.)There are also some analytics being developed for creators, who will be able to track average watch times for their content. This is a small step but a signal that were likely to see more analytics features emerge in the coming months especially if a full video feed makes its way to general release.

  • Walkstar is a new iOS app that pauses songs when you stop moving
    techcrunch.com
There are plenty of pedometer and step counter apps in the world, but this new app has a fun twist. Walkstar, which launched Tuesday in the App Store, enhances your workout by syncing your tunes with your movement. The moment you pause, the music fades away, making it a perfect motivator for those looking to maintain an active lifestyle. When you start walking or running for at least 10 seconds, the music begins to play. If the app detects that youve stopped moving, the music will also stop. It will resume playing once you start moving again. The app was created by Greg Gardner, who previously developed Launcher, the app-launching widget that allows iPhone users to launch an app, perform an action, or access a website with one tap.Gardner shared with TechCrunch that he got the idea for Walkstar after observing someone online who combined an old Sony Walkman with a pedometer. This allowed the device to play music only while the user was walking. (Unfortunately, we were unable to locate the original post.)I thought that was really clever and realized that the same thing could probably be accomplished with an iPhone app and that it could be a really nice motivational tool to encourage people to walk more, Gardner said. One particularly fun aspect of Walkstar is its retro-style interface, which transforms your phone into a colorful portable cassette player, reminiscent of an old-school Walkman. A nostalgic touch is added with a sound tape hiss that plays when the music starts.Image Credits:Cromulent LabsOther neat features include Game Center integration to view leaderboards and achievements. Theres also a Live Activity widget for tracking step count and distance, as well as Shortcuts integration for starting and stopping walking sessions, among other features. The app is available to download for free, but theres also a Premium subscription if you want to customize the app with colorful app icons and cassette tape covers. Additionally, Premium members can view analytics, including their overall step count and walking history. In the future, Gardner plans to introduce more features that will enable people to share their progress and compete with friends. If the app gains sufficient popularity, he may also consider developing an Android version. Its important to note that Walkstar is currently only compatible with Apple services, including Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Apple Books, and iTunes. Users can also listen to music that they manually load onto their devices via the Apple Music app.Gardner is exploring the possibility of adding more music-streaming integrations, with Spotify being the first target. A test version featuring Spotify is currently under review in the App Store.Hopefully, it gets approved in the next few months, Gardner stated.

  • Bibliotheca Alexandrina by Snhetta: A Symbol of Knowledge
    archeyes.com
Bibliotheca Alexandrina | Gerald ZugmannThe Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a contemporary reimagining of one of historys most revered centers of knowledgethe ancient Library of Alexandria. The original library, lost to time, symbolized the ambition of human intellect and the universal pursuit of learning. The library, designed by Snhetta, aimed to revive this legacy, not as a mere reconstruction but as a bold architectural statement that repositions Alexandria as an intellectual and cultural epicenter in the 21st century.Bibliotheca Alexandrina Technical InformationArchitects1-16: SnhettaLocation: Alexandria, EgyptArea: 85,000 m2 | 915,500 Sq. Snhetta ArchitectsBibliotheca Alexandrina PhotographsAerial View | Gerald ZugmannFacade | Gerald ZugmannEntrance | Gerald ZugmannNight View | Gerald ZugmannNight View | Gerald ZugmannFacade Detail | Gerald ZugmannColumns | Gerald ZugmannInterior | Gerald ZugmannArchitectural Philosophy: Monumentality and MovementPositioned along Alexandrias ancient harbor, the 85,000-square-meter library asserts its presence within the historic fabric of the city while forging connections with its contemporary urban surroundings. The library is both a landmark and a catalyst for urban renewal, initiating infrastructural improvements such as the redevelopment of the Corniche road and revitalization of adjacent districts. Its open plaza and reflecting pool create a seamless threshold between the city and the institution, allowing the building to engage with the public realm rather than operate in isolation. The circular, tilting volume of the Bibliotheca is an architectural gesture that transcends mere aesthetics. Its form recalls the cyclical nature of knowledgeexpanding and contracting through time. Simultaneously, its inclination towards the sky evokes the ancient Pharos Lighthouse, another lost Alexandrian wonder, reinforcing the buildings dual role as both a learning and a cultural monument. Bibliotheca Alexandrina Spatial OrganizationAt its core, the Bibliotheca is a dynamic spatial experience. The 20,000-square-meter reading room, accommodating up to 2,000 readers, is an architectural feat, designed as a terraced amphitheater spanning seven levels. This configuration defies conventional library layouts, fostering an environment of openness and intellectual exchange. Unlike the rigid compartmentalization seen in many recent library designs, the Bibliothecas reading terraces prioritize visual connectivity, accessibility, and efficiency. One of the most remarkable aspects of the reading room is its north-facing skylights, which allow indirect natural light to permeate the space without exposing books and manuscripts to harmful UV radiation. This careful orchestration of light creates an atmosphere of serenity and contemplation, reinforcing the idea that architecture can actively contribute to the intellectual process. By positioning book stacks beneath each terraced level, the design minimizes retrieval times while ensuring that each reader remains in close proximity to their sources of knowledge. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is not solely a library; it serves as a multidisciplinary cultural center. The inclusion of a planetarium, museums, a conference center, and a school for information sciences enriches its function, transforming it into a civic institution that bridges academia, research, and public engagement. The addition of a Young Persons Library further emphasizes the projects ambition to cultivate knowledge across generations.Materiality and Technical ExecutionThe Bibliothecas 6,000-square-meter stone wall is among the largest contemporary sculptural facades in the world. Clad in hand-carved Egyptian granite, the wall features alphabetic inscriptions from multiple writing systems, including ancient scripts, Braille, and mathematical notation. This meticulous design choice underscores the fundamental premise of the library: the preservation and celebration of human communication across time and cultures.Beneath the striking exterior lies one of the most sophisticated structural solutions in contemporary architecture. The tilted circular form, which reaches 32 meters in height and plunges 12 meters underground, is a feat of engineering. The concrete structural core supports the cantilevered roof, while the external stone wall follows a progressively tilting geometry, varying up to 8 degrees from vertical. To achieve this, large 900-kilogram granite blocks were meticulously mounted using a stainless steel bracket system with slip joints, allowing for minor movements due to thermal expansion and seismic activity. The result is a facade that remains structurally stable while maintaining its sculptural integrity. The buildings material palette is not only aesthetic but also performative. The thick granite walls provide thermal mass, helping to regulate internal temperatures and reduce energy consumption. The combination of passive daylighting strategies, natural ventilation, and advanced climate control systems ensures the comfort of its users while minimizing its ecological footprint.Appraisal and LegacyThe Bibliotheca Alexandrina successfully transcends the conventional expectations of a contemporary library. Its reading terraces challenge conventional typologies, its monolithic facade merges architecture with art, and its multifunctional programming positions it as a dynamic cultural entity. The projects ability to fuse symbolism, urbanism, and technological ingenuity underscores its architectural significance.Beyond its immediate urban influence, the Bibliotheca has set a precedent for library architecture worldwide. It challenges the notion that digital access negates the need for physical spaces of learning. Instead, it reaffirms the importance of place, materiality, and architectural storytelling in shaping intellectual environments.
