  • European Auto Stocks Steady After Tariff Tumult
    www.forbes.com
EU and US flags on two automobiles hood. black background. Europe USA trade war, American tariffs ... [+] concept. 3D rendering image.gettyShares of most of Europes biggest automakers rallied Tuesday after diving the previous day when they reacted to President Donald Trumps long-awaited campaign to use tariffs to restore fairness in global trading relations.Calm may have returned to auto shares, but when its Europes turn to face the tariff question the added issue of non-tariff barriers might quickly turn nasty.President Trumps campaign started with Canada and Mexico and this set off tremors across the worlds stock markets. But the quick reaction of Canada and Mexico to offer concessions calmed investors nerves Tuesday, after Trump suspended his threat of 25% tariffs, agreeing to a 30-day pause in return for concessions on border and crime enforcement.Volkswagen ($98.1 +1.03%) and Stellantis (12.63 +2.04%) rallied, Mercedes (57.17 off 0.07%) and BMW (77.36 off 0.88%) steadied, while Renaults shares fell 0.54% to about 50 after a relatively long period of advancement based on its improved outlook for electric vehicles sales.Investment bank UBS said calm returned to stock markets as the immediate deadline was replaced by the need to wait for a month before the next episode. This might not be the last surprise in the tariff saga, which is why we expect continued volatility on the topic in the coming weeks and months, UBS said in a research note.MORE FOR YOUAt the weekend President Trump said he would put tariffs on European-made vehicles. Trump also claimed the U.S. trade deficit with the EU was more than $300 billion a year.Such tariffs would not cause as much potential supply chain disruption and inflationary pressure on U.S. consumers as a tariff on Mexican products would do, according to UBS.But agreeing a deal with Europe might not be easy, according to former U.S. ambassador to the EU Gordon Sondland. The case for an adjustment of the tariff on European autos in the U.S. is clear. EU autos carry a tariff of 2.5% in the U.S., while Europe charges U.S. automakers 10%.Sondland said the EU also restricts U.S. sales by non-tariff measures insisting on different safety standards. Sales of food and wine are also restricted by unnecessary regulation. When EU citizens come to the U.S. on vacation or to live here temporarily, they dont bring their own cars or their own food. They are perfectly safe eating our food and driving our cars and its high time the EU treated our products that way, Sondland said in an interview Monday with the BBCs NewsNight program. If we sell you a vegetable or a car or a product if its safe to use in the U.S. it should deemed to be safe to use in the EU, Sondland said.He was asked to sum up Trumps plan for Europe and the world. The U.S. is tired of talking about impediments to its foreign trade and wants action now, he said.Sondland was ambassador to the EU during Trumps first term.

  • Chess History Has A Lot To Do With AI
    www.forbes.com
Pieces on chess board for playing game and strategygettyIn many parts of the AI community, people are used to thinking about artificial intelligence as applied to new and modern forms of game theory. For example, some of the most tangible rollouts of AI products are in new digital games that incorporate MMORPG design. But what about a game thats centuries old, that evolved, in some ways, shoulder to shoulder with the concept of artificial intelligence itself?Tamer Karatekin has a lot of chess experience, as a player and as a coach. In a recent TED talk, he went over some of the intersections between this ancient game and the very new practice of ceding ground to a new class of thinking machines.Part of whats really interesting about this talk is that it doesnt just address the power of AI out of context. It takes something thats historical, cultural and molded by provincial and regional customs, and talks about how our newest technologies have revolutionized the game itself.A Look at Chess HistoryIn a rich retelling of the story of chess, Karatekin introduces a series of new pieces that he himself designed, and also talks about pieces that have fallen out of fashion in contemporary chess culture. He starts by talking about Shatranj as a precursor to chess, a Persian game brought to Europe through Andalusia and Sicily around the 10th century.MORE FOR YOUIn Shatranj, some of the player characters are different. Karatekin also talks about the elephant, which is still in the chess terminology of many modern languages, but not English.Throughout the presentation you can see Karatekin molding pieces to represent cultural iconography, and asking whether we can make chess diverse, inclusive and representative in the global age.Whether its the evolution of the Queen piece as damme or the falcon or sokoli thats a an icon of military power in Slavic languages, or Alexander the Greats horse, Karatekin invokes historical examples as he talks about the potential of chess for community learning.Quotes from the Talk: I was born in the Macedonian region of Yugoslavia, and learned chess from my grandfather playing with (his) chess set. Growing up in Istanbul, I drew world chess champions and became the Turkish national champion. While studying at MIT, I competed as the first board player on MIT's chess team. Later, as a children's chess coach, I helped my students earn international medals. I also taught at one of the world's first schools to make chess compulsory, witnessing its transformative impact on education. During my classroom instruction there, I developed a chess platform for early childhood education to effectively blend classroom and home learning.(Changes in) chess terminology reflect fascinating phonetic and cultural transformations that few learners are aware of. Moreover, Chess has deep connections to art, literature, history, mathematics and AI that are rarely explored in the classroom. I'm inspired by these stories and intersections that deserve a prominent place in modern education.Chess was a truly multicultural game in this golden age, but by the end of Age of Enlightenment, it became increasingly religionized, which contrasts with its role as a unifying global sport. How can we separate church from chess for the multi-faith classroom? Should we modernize chess king and queen to move beyond their entrenched symbols of monarchy, and bring back gender-neutral terminology and designs? Can we fully acknowledge the global history of chess as an amalgamation of contributions from cultures worldwide?Collaborate with us in building a new future for chess education and cultural connection. Teach at your institution with our nonprofits . join our AI coding boot camps and explore how chess can inspire AI education. Use culturally and spiritually inclusive chess sets in the classroom, at tournaments and at home, to celebrate the cultural heritage and evolution of chess.AI Eclipses Human CapabilityIll talk about this a little later in the timeline of artificial intelligence, but as you consider AIs impact on chess, you can see that it represents an early form of human displacement, where the machine simply gets better at the game than any human.Karatekin gives an anecdote where Garry Kasparov, speaking at Northeastern University in Boston about losing his job to AI, suggested that after his chess retirement and loss to Deep Blue, he ended up working in restaurants.Thats a powerful example of something that many of us are going to encounter rather soon the idea that our skills, carefully cultivated over decades, are no longer needed in the ways that they once were.Chess and AIWith that in mind, Karatekin spends quite a lot of time talking about the particular timeline from the middle of the 20th century, when AI became ascendant, to today, when we have very sophisticated AI systems in place. But he also started out with the story of the mechanical Turk. If youve never heard of this, it was supposed to be an early example of an automaton chess player that flummoxed characters like Ben Franklin in the 1770s.However, Karatekin reveals that the mechanical Turk was actually not an artificially intelligent machine, but rather a human hiding inside of a box.Fast-forward to the middle of the 20th century, and Alan Turing pioneers the idea of creating a chess- playing digital intelligence.Since then, weve seen a number of landmarks, including the aforementioned loss to Deep Blue in 1997, the debut of Alphazero and subsequent model improvements: such that todays AI chess engines have ratings far above the best human players.Karatekin also refers back to MIT many times, including referencing Rybka or little fish system developed by an MIT alumnus. Despite the eventual allegations leveled at Vasik Rajlich, Rybka remains a point on the timeline of AI chess emergence and design. The bottom line, though, is that Karatekin suggests we can use chess as a learning tool for humans. We can integrate chess learning with understanding better how AI relates to game theory. And we can do it in a way that celebrates not just one, but multiple world cultures. It may be that this kind of cultural integration is going to soften the blow as AI waltzes into our lives in every way imaginable.

  • Deep Research: OpenAIs Newest Feature That Makes Niche Research a Breeze
    techreport.com
Key TakeawaysOpenAIs new Deep Research tool offers an advanced research assistant powered by the latest ChatGPT o3 model. It performs fast, in-depth research across niche topics, uncovering hard-to-find information and generating comprehensive, citation-backed reports. The release of Deep Research follows Chinas DeepSeek, intensifying competition in the AI research space and driving innovations in the industry.Kevin Weil, CPO at OpenAI, took to LinkedIn to announce the newest agent of the AI giant that allows users to do extensive research on any topic. Its basically a search engine on steroids. Its like having your own personal research assistant, and its (unbelievably) good. Kevin Weil. This feature is expected to allow you to research complex questions and perform tasks that couldve taken you anywhere from a few hours to 30 days in a matter of just a few minutes (varying anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes). How Deep Research Works?Powered by the most advanced model of ChatGPT yet, OpenAI o3, Deep Research can independently and exhaustively search the web, synthesizing large amounts of information to get to the depths of any niche you present to it.After searching the web, it creates a comprehensive report with documented outputs and clear citations that you can circle back to in case of doubts or curiosity. You can request a competitive analysis between 2 topics or a personalized report from it as per your requirements.Kevin Weil recommended its best suited for researching a niche, as the program is pretty good at digging up pages and websites that arent that easily on the web while scrolling.Deep Research could be a game changer for students, SEO experts, medical experts, or any professional where depth and detail are critical, if it lives up to the claims made.Public Reactions to Deep ResearchSeveral users commented on the LinkedIn post expressing their views after trying the feature firsthand. Heres one of the many:We used it this morning to brainstorm ideas for AI benchmarks for foundational literacy, building on the need to identify the tasks a teacher does at each step. Its very good. A LinkedIn userOverall, users seemed pretty excited to try out Deep Research, but since the feature has just rolled out, a few factual errors and lagging was experienced by some users. Hopefully, with time these minor issues will get fixed. How to Use OpenAI Deep ResearchTo use the feature, you simply have to select the Deep Research option in the text composer and the searches will be run inside ChatGPT itself. As always, you can attach documents and spreadsheets to support and better explain your question. While the accuracy of any AI is still not at 100%, Deep Research claims to be better at fact-checking and reliability. However, of course, if its something important, a quick human check is never a bad idea. Its worth noting that the Deep Research feature is currently available on the premium ChatGPT plan.OpenAI Comes Out All Guns BlazingThe timing of this update is interesting although not surprising as it comes right after Chinas DeepSeek shook the foundation of the AI industry with its performance and budget, heating up competition like never before. Moreover, OpenAI launched a special ChatGPT Enterprise variant for the US government just days earlier. It looks like OpenAI is eager to demonstrate its dominance after the DeepSeek saga.Add Techreport to Your Google News Feed Get the latest updates, trends, and insights delivered straight to your fingertips. • Global smartphone market grew 7% in 2024 as vendors brace for a challenging 2025
    www.techspot.com
The big picture: Smartphone shipments rebounded in 2024 to reach 1.22 billion units worldwide, reversing two consecutive years of decline. The gains could be short-lived, however, as vendors and consumers are likely to face uncertainty in 2025 due to economic fluctuation, US tariffs, and other challenges. Apple maintained its position at the top of the stack thanks to strong performance in emerging markets and a stable showing in established regions like North America and Europe according to the latest report from Canalys. The company sold 225.9 million iPhones in 2024 down one percent year over year but enough to offset struggles faced in China.Late last month, the company announced its best quarter to date with revenues of $124.3 billion, even though its iPhone division experienced a slight year-over-year decline. Even with the dip, Apple's smartphone sector generated an impressive $69.1 billion during the three-month holiday quarter.Rival Samsung trailed close behind with 222.9 million units shipped last year, which was also down one percent from the year before. Xiaomi took home third place with a 14 percent market share after the Chinese smartphone maker managed to grow shipments by 15 percent to 168.6 million units. Transsion and Oppo rounded out the top five with shipments of 106.7 million and 103.6 million units, respectively.Canalys analyst Runar Bjrhovde said 2024 delivered the highest annual global shipment volume since the pandemic, thanks in part to mature economies like China, North America, and Europe starting to recover. The analyst added that promotions such as discounts, trade-ins, and bundles also helped accelerate demand in these regions. On a model by model basis, the iPhone 15 was the most shipped handset in 2024. In fact, six of the seven leading models shipped were Apple iPhones the sole exception being the Samsung Galaxy A15 in fourth place. The South Korean tech giant also captured the eighth and ninth position with its A15 5G and S24 Ultra, but everything else belonged to Apple.Image credit: Daniel Romero

  • Trump's anti-China tariffs could drive up consumer electronics prices
    www.techspot.com
The big picture: President Donald Trump's long-discussed tariffs have taken effect. While the initial duties are not as severe as anticipated, they remain far-reaching. China has already responded in kind, and the resulting trade war is expected to impact a wide range of electronics and other products, pushing prices into uncharted territory. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing a 10 percent tariff on products from China. Given China's significant role in consumer electronics supply chains, the decision could drive up prices for laptops, smartphones, game consoles, PC components, TVs, and other goods.Although Taiwan-based TSMC and South Korea's Samsung produce the most advanced semiconductors powering the latest processors and game consoles, Chinese companies still play a crucial role in assembly and the supply of key raw materials. Additionally, Chinese semiconductor fabs remain important for manufacturing older process nodes.Trump has also previously voiced concerns over Taiwan's dominance in the semiconductor industry, suggesting he might take action against TSMC.Prior reports suggested that Trump might raise tariffs on China to 20, 60, or even 100 percent. While that remains a possibility, such increases could add hundreds of dollars to the prices of laptops and game consoles.Economists warn that the tariffs could significantly harm the US economy by reducing GDP, costing jobs, and driving up inflation, which had been declining after reaching historic highs in 2022. Although Trump campaigned on ending inflation and lowering prices, a strategy many credit as a key factor in his victory, he has more recently acknowledged that there could be "some pain." // Related StoriesChina swiftly retaliated against the new tariffs, imposing duties of 10 to 15 percent on fuel and agricultural equipment. Additionally, it enacted export controls on rare earth metals and launched an antitrust investigation into Google.Trump introduced the tariffs to address China's trade surplus with the US while also pressuring Beijing to curb the flow of fentanyl. The synthetic opioid, produced using precursor chemicals from China, has contributed to a drug abuse crisis in the US. The president also threatened 25 percent tariffs on certain goods from Canada and Mexico but postponed the orders for 30 days after both countries committed to strengthening border security.Less than one percent of the illicit fentanyl supply in the US is estimated to originate from Canada. Furthermore, fatal overdoses had already begun to decline nationwide last year.

Dont get me wrong all are fantastic devices with specs that make expert guesses from a decade ago look wildly inaccurate but with every new phone generation, there are objectively better picks. The Apple iPhone 15 may not be the latest version of Apples flagship, but its a strong smartphone, and if youre using a iPhone 15, you may be wondering if its worth jumping ship when its time to upgrade. So which one of these two phones is the better choice? There are a lot of factors involved, and it ultimately depends on what youre most interested in: performance, storage, AI functionality, photographic potential, or something else. The S25 is slightly lighter than the S24, but only by a matter of a few grams. Even the rear camera setup is virtually the same. The displays are also quite similar, with the S25 sporting a 6.2-inch screen and the iPhone 15 a 6.1-inch screen. Despite having a smaller screen, the iPhone 15 has a higher resolution and greater pixel density, but S25 beats it in terms of refresh rate and brightness. The iPhone 15 has Apples Dynamic Island feature, but the Galaxy S25 has something similar in the Now Bar.Both handsets are sleek and the culmination of many previous generations, but there arent really a lot of improvements on either front. The better design boils down to personal preference and whether you like the look of an iPhone or a Galaxy. The S25 absolutely has a better display though, and the continued use of a 60Hz panel on the basic iPhone range is a crime.Winner: Samsung Galaxy S25Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max Andy Boxall / Digital TrendsThe Galaxy S25 is a brand-new flagship, replete with all the bells and whistles users expect from a new device. Comparatively speaking, the iPhone 15 lags a bit behind, especially when compared to the S25.The Galaxy S25 comes with 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage, while the iPhone 15 tops out at 6GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. The S25s Snapdragon 8 Elite processor is going to be a lot faster than the iPhone 15s A16 Bionic chip, but thats largely when it comes down to things like benchmarks. Real life performance may not show as large as gulf when it comes to how the device feels.Demanding apps and 3D games will be the real tests here though, and if you love to play games or juggle a lot of big apps at once, then the winner will be obvious. The newer device, with newer technology, is the clear victor.Winner: Samsung Galaxy S25Nirave Gondhia / Digital TrendsThe Galaxy S25 comes with a 4,000mAh battery. Samsung hasnt provided an estimate for what that translates to in hours, but the Galaxy S24 also had a 4,000mAh battery. We found it to last around a day under moderate to heavy use, and we expect roughly the same from the Galaxy S25. Perhaps even slightly better performance given the newer hardware and improved power efficiency. The iPhone 15 sports a 3,349mAh battery. The winner is clear, in this case, especially since the S25 requires a little extra power to keep its AI features running. On the other hand, the iPhone 15 has been plagued by battery life issues experienced by many different users. Though estimates give the iPhone 15 an estimated max of 20 or so hours, its longevity under real conditions is closer to 11 hours.Winner: Samsung Galaxy S25Joe Maring / Digital TrendsArtificial intelligence is the next great frontier for technology, and there are already quite a few names in the arena. Between ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini all working together with mobile device assistants, your phone is capable of much more than it ever has been before but there are limits. The Galaxy S25 is built around AI. Tools like Circle to Search, Call Transcript, Writing Assist and Drawing Assist make it easy to generate text or images as you need, perform searches for something you arent sure how to describe, or just review an important phone call. The S25 takes advantage of its ProScaler feature for AI image upscaling, resulting in a 40% improvement in image clarity. The iPhone 15 has more limited AI functionality. Its still capable of quite a bit, including image and text generation, but the S25 is on a completely different level. The iPhone 15 received AI features as sort of an afterthought, with most of those aimed at the iPhone 16.Winner: Samsung Galaxy S25Andy Boxall / Digital TrendsThe iPhone 15 shipped with iOS 17, but it currently still runs the most recent version of iOS 18. Though a generation older, the handset is still quick and smooth, able to handle the more modern OS with ease. As an added bonus, the jump to iOS 18 brought with it Apple Intelligence features like Genmoji, Image Playground, and more. Itll even summarize some messages for you, although that feature has had varying (and sometimes shocking) results. On the other hand, the Galaxy S25 will come with One UI 7. Thanks to many months spent in beta, we have a solid idea of what that will look like. For starters, the Now Bar is Samsungs answer to the Dynamic Island, providing much of the same information on the go. It disappears when not in use, giving you back your screen. It also comes with several notable UI improvements and offers more customization options for your own layout. Perhaps one of the most exciting perks of One UI 7 is that you can choose between different charging speeds that let you top off your battery quickly, or charge at a lower speed in exchange for a healthier battery.Samsung also has Galaxy AI, its take on artificial intelligence. It also integrates Gemini for easy access. Like Apple Intelligence, Galaxy AI has many useful features like Call Transcript, a tool that keeps your calls organized, as well as writing and drawing assist tools. Want to find out more information about something you saw on screen? Circle to Search will find the answer quickly. With these benefits in mind and assuming the Galaxy S25 performs the way its expected it takes home the prize.Winner: Galaxy S25Samsung Galaxy S25 Andy Boxall / Digital TrendsBoth the Samsung Galaxy S25 and iPhone 15 carry a not-insignificant price tag, but the Galaxy S25 is new, whereas the iPhone 15 is one generation behind. The Galaxy S25 starts from $800, and is currently available for pre-order. Samsung does offer a few programs to help mitigate the cost, like the New Galaxy Club early upgrade program. You can sign up for a small amount each month and receive a new phone now, with the option to upgrade to the latest device after 12 months. The program includes one year of Samsung Care+, too.The iPhone 15 is more affordable than the Galaxy S25, with prices now starting from $699. Its available pretty much anywhere phones are sold, and you shouldnt have an issue finding one. Apple offers financing programs to help mitigate the cost, too. Another reason Apple is more affordable is because the company has discontinued the Pro options from the iPhone 15. Ultimately, its the less expensive option of the two. Both phones are solid choices, but in the end, its hard to recommend anything except the Galaxy S25 from a purely technical standpoint. If you already use an iPad and Mac on a daily basis, then the iPhone might be a better pick for you (if only because it slots right into the ecosystem), but only if you use those integrations. If youre after a powerful, more modern phone, the Galaxy S25 cant be beat. Its also future-proofed for the next seven years thanks to software and security updates, so you wont have to think about an upgrade for a long time to come.Editors Recommendations

  • Why it makes perfect sense for this bike to have two gears and two chains
    arstechnica.com
It's tempting to make the Onion joke about Gillette here Why it makes perfect sense for this bike to have two gears and two chains Bike design seems like a solved problem, but there's a lot to learn from Buffalo. Kevin Purdy Feb 4, 2025 1:17 pm | 0 Credit: World Bicycle Relief Credit: World Bicycle Relief Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreThe Buffalo Bicycle Utility S2 has won an award from Eurobike and earned a German Design Award. With components designed by cycling industry giant SRAM and made from heavy steel, the bike has rim brakes, two gears, two chainrings, and two separate chains. And that makes total sense. The S2 is the second bike developed by World Bicycle Relief, which aims to bring bicycle-based mobility to the nearly 1 billion people who otherwise must walk long distances for basic needs. YouTube channel Berm Peak recently featured (and rode) an S2 (as first seen at Hackaday) and explains why a bike with two chains makes sense. Short answer: redundancy, reliable shifting, and far more simple repair. Berm Peak's tour and explainer on the Buffalo Bicycle S2 Utility. Buffalo bicycles are meant to take people a long way over tough terrain, hauling whatever they need to haul. Given that the rear rack is rated for 200 pounds, that "whatever" can range from cargo to humans. The original Buffalo bike had a single gear and coaster brakes, which as both kids and minimalist bike fans can attest, make it simple to stop and go. Buffalo bikes can generally be fixed with the single included wrench, but World Bicycle Relief has also been training mechanics (over 3,300 now) and setting up some 200 Buffalo-focused bike shops. The S2 model aimed to give riders an uphill climbing gear, but without introducing the complexities of a gear-shifting derailleur, tensioned cables, and handlebar shifters. Engineers at SRAM came up with a solution that's hard to imagine for other bikes, but not too hard to grasp. A freewheel in the back has two cogs, with a high gear for cruising and low gear for climbing. If you pedal backward a half-rotation, the outer, higher gear engages or disengages, taking over the work from the lower gear. The cogs, chains, and chainrings on this bike are always moving, but only one gear is ever doing the work.Seth at Berm Peak suggests that the shifting is instantaneous and seemingly perfect, without clicking or chain slipping. If one chain breaks, you can ride on the other chain and cog until you can get it fixed. There might be some inefficiencies in the amount of tension on the chains, since they have to be somewhat even. But after trying out ideas with simplified internal gear hubs and derailleurs, SRAM recommended the two-chain design and donated it to the bike charity.Buffalo S2 bikes cost $165, just $15 more than the original, and a $200 donation covers the building and shipping of such a bike to most places.
