  • Apples First Notarized Porn App Stirs Privacy Woes, Third-Party Risks
    www.forbes.com
Apple's iPhone 15Getty ImagesApple has long maintained strict control over the App Store, ensuring that only applications meeting its security, privacy and content guidelines can be distributed to iPhone users. However, with the EUs Digital Markets Act now in effect, Apple has been forced to loosen its grip, allowing sideloading through third-party marketplaces such as AltStore PAL.This shift introduces new cybersecurity risks that many consumers may not fully understand. The recent launch of Hot Tub, the first Apple-notarized porn app available through AltStore PAL, highlights a major turning point in Apples ecosystem. While Apple has not officially approved the app for the App Store, it was still required to notarize it, meaning the app was reviewed for basic security risks but not its content or overall safety.Apple has publicly voiced concerns about the dangers of distributing adult content apps, warning that it could undermine user trust and create safety risks, especially for minors. However, this is just one layer of a much bigger issue the cybersecurity threats that come with third-party app installations, data privacy risks and malware concerns. The Growing Threat Of Sideloaded AppsWith the introduction of third-party app stores on iOS, users now have access to apps that bypass Apples stringent security policies. While this opens doors for greater software freedom, it also exposes iPhone users to significant cybersecurity risks that were previously rare on iOS.Here is what users need to be aware of:Increased Exposure to Malware PrivacyUnlike the official App Store, third-party marketplaces often lack strict oversight, making them more susceptible to hosting malicious or compromised apps. Even though Apples notarization process screens for malware, it does not guarantee an app is completely safe.MORE FOR YOUCybercriminals may exploit the shift toward sideloading to distribute trojanized versions of legitimate apps, embedding malware designed to steal credentials, monitor user activity or inject spyware onto devices.Privacy Risks from Unregulated AppsApple has long enforced strict privacy policies to regulate user data collection, ensuring apps meet high security and transparency standards. However, third-party marketplaces operate outside these rules, creating potential risks for users. Some apps may extensively track user activity, collecting data beyond what is necessary. Others might share this information with third parties, often without clear disclosure or user consent. Additionally, the lack of transparency in how personal data is stored and used raises serious concerns.Exposure to Fraudulent and Predatory ContentThe introduction of adult content apps raises serious questions about content moderation, safety and ethical concerns. While platforms like AltStore PAL claim they do not promote these apps by default, their availability could expose users especially minors to unsuitable or harmful material.Increased Risks for MinorsApples warning regarding child safety risks is particularly valid. Without Apples traditional app approval system, parents have fewer safeguards to prevent children from accessing content that would otherwise be banned from the App Store.6 Must-Know Consumer Protection TipsAs sideloading becomes a reality for iPhone users in the EU and potentially beyond, users must take an active role in their own mobile app cybersecurity. Here are essential steps to mitigate risks while using third-party marketplaces:1. Stick to Trusted SourcesNot all third-party app stores have the same security measures. Platforms like AltStore PAL may implement some security protocols, but others may be entirely unregulated. Only download apps from sources with a strong reputation and avoid unfamiliar marketplaces.2. Check App PermissionsBefore installing any app especially one from an external source review its permissions carefully. Be cautious if an app requests access to your camera, microphone, location or contacts without a clear reason. If an app asks for more access than it reasonably needs, consider it a red flag.3. Keep iOS and Security Updates EnabledApple frequently releases security updates to patch vulnerabilities that hackers may try to exploit. Always ensure your iPhone is running the latest iOS version to reduce the risk of attacks from compromised apps.4. Use Apples Built-in Privacy FeaturesDespite Apples shift toward sideloading, several iOS security features still offer strong protection. Make sure to:Enable App Tracking Transparency (Settings > Privacy > Tracking)Use Lockdown Mode if you are highly concerned about security threatsRestrict app installation permissions on children's devices through parental controls5. Avoid Entering Personal or Financial Information in Unverified AppsIf an app requires sensitive personal details, financial information or biometric data, ensure it comes from a fully verified and reputable source before inputting any details.6. Consider a Mobile Security AppWhile Apples ecosystem has historically been secure, with sideloading now a possibility, it may be worth investing in a reliable mobile security app that can scan for malicious software and phishing threats.

  • I Now Have The Coolest Xbox Controller, But It Sure Feels Old
    www.forbes.com
Pulse Cipher Xbox controllerCredit: Mitch WallaceTheres something about translucent tech that still feels deliciously retro, and the new Xbox controller I recently got my hands on is a fiery throwback to an era wherein a products trademark cool factor was directly correlated with its internal visibility. It was a simpler time, a time when candy-colored electronics proclaimed from the pixelated mountaintops that louder was, indeed, better. Play it loud, as it were, to cite an eternally Funtastic Nintendo.Lady in Red (Xbox Edition)The vibrantly red Pulse Cipher gamepad is Xboxs latest entry in its Y2K-inspired line of wireless devices, preceded by both the deep blue Sky Cipher and the starkly robotic Ghost Cipher special edition controllers. Granted, you can make your own bespoke Cipher gamepad in the Xbox Design Lab, though admittedly, the see-through colorways are limited to the more expensive Elite Series 2. The vanilla XDL controller sports its own exclusive customizations, like a range of Vapor shells, which are essentially pearlescent options. But no Cipher choices, though.Pulse Cipher Xbox controllerCredit: Mitch WallaceAlso, as of this writing, only Pulse Cipher and Ghost Cipher are available as custom pattern options for the Elite Series 2, with a lighter blue hue, Surf Cipher, standing in for the aforementioned Sky Cipher. That said, even with some of the matching parts, you cant recreate each limited Cipher controller exactly within the Xbox Design Lab.Each Cipher gamepad features its own subtle differences that make them desirable beyond what you could simply build in Microsofts online tool. For instance, the Pulse Ciphers clear red shell extends all the way down to its handles, while the same translucent red shell on a custom Elite Series 2 via Xbox Design Lab forcibly stops at its front rubberized pads. Additionally, you also cant change the color of the black rubberized grips in XDL, whereas the Pulse Cipher comes with exclusive (and bright red) rear grips.Pulse Cipher Xbox controllerCredit: Mitch WallaceI suppose these one-off special editions come across as more pure, in that the whole controller maintains a unique theming, one you cant get anywhere else. Like I said, the differences are rather subtle, and it could easily be argued that Xbox Design Lab is still the way to go if youre after something more aesthetically funky. But if you dont want to spend time designing a custom controller, its easy to purchase one of the limited editions and call it a day. Theyre also significantly cheaper, and of course, they dont boast pro Elite features: $74.99 for a vanilla Cipher versus an Elite Cipher gamepad that starts at $149.99.MORE FOR YOUAn Xbox Story About PlayStationI do think the Pulse Cipher is the coolest Xbox controller to date, in that it reminds me of my old Crimson Red PlayStation memory card, and Im a sucker for nostalgia. Funny story: I actually owned two of these PS1 memory cards back in the late 90s, and thats because my dog Tucker tried to eat the first one, whichnaturallycontained my well-progressed Final Fantasy VII save data. After much pleading, I extracted the card from his slobbery maw, and immediately realized Id have to start the game over. I was understandably livid, but I loved that dog, and I loved FFVII, so now I have a memory that still makes me laugh.Pulse Cipher Xbox controller with Starfield controllerCredit: Mitch WallaceOn that note, I detailed my affinity for Sonys new Chroma Teal PS5 controller last week, citing similar nostalgic feelings, although Tucker never attempted to eat my Emerald Green PS1 DualShock, thank the heavens. Maybe what weve learned here is that manufacturing gaming devices to look like candy will lead certain dogs to occasionally treat them as such. Who knew. Man, was that memory card mangled. I should have framed it, honestly. Devastation art.Judging by whats currently available inside the Xbox Design Lab, Im hoping the next limited controller we get from Microsoft is Astral Cipher. Im rather partial to purple, and I do prefer the cleanness of these special editions over the XDL stuff. For now, Ill enjoy my PS1-esque Pulse Cipher, but I wont leave it laying around, no sir. I dont want any wayward animals thinking its made of cherry Jolly Rancher and kicking off another Final Fantasy VII incident. Do you realize how many times Ive visited the Gold Saucer?Xboxs Pulse Cipher controller is available to order now via Microsofts website and other participating retailers.Disclosure: Xbox provided review product for coverage purposes.

  • AI boom fuels semiconductor growth, with 2025 set for more gains
    www.techspot.com
AI Money: While shareholders and tech giants scramble to turn AI's promises into real-world business opportunities, semiconductor companies are raking in billions. Samsung has emerged as the world's top player by revenue, and the industry is poised for another strong year. Gartner recently reported that semiconductor industry revenue in 2024 reached $626 billion, marking an 18.1 percent increase from 2023. Preliminary projections suggest revenue will continue to grow, reaching up to $705 billion in 2025. Unsurprisingly, AI chips and custom accelerators accounted for the largest share of this remarkable market expansion.George Brocklehurst, VP analyst at Gartner, stated that GPUs and AI processors used in data centers, servers, and accelerator cards played a pivotal role in the semiconductor industry's growth in 2024. The rising demand for generative AI services and workloads, he confirmed, has made data center products the second-largest market segment for semiconductor manufacturers.Revenue from data center chips surged to $112 billion in 2024, up from just $64.8 billion in 2023. Despite concerns from some industry voices about an impending downturn, the so-called "AI bubble" was instrumental in propelling Samsung to the top of the semiconductor market, with total revenue reaching $66.5 billion.Intel slipped to second place, posting $49.1 billion in revenue with a modest 0.1 percent year-over-year increase in market share. Meanwhile, Nvidia performed "exceptionally well," according to Gartner, with an 84 percent revenue surge to $46 billion. The GPU designer is now the world's third-largest semiconductor vendor by revenue, as the AI boom fuels demand for accelerators and high-priced GeForce RTX cards to sustain the hype.Gartner noted that nine of the top 10 semiconductor companies achieved record results in 2024. Korean memory manufacturer SK Hynix led the industry in growth, surging 86 percent to $42.8 billion, climbing to fourth place behind Nvidia. Memory chips have become just as crucial as GPUs, with the memory market expanding by 71.8 percent in 2024. // Related StoriesMemory chips now account for 25.2 percent of total annual semiconductor sales, Gartner reported. DRAM revenue grew by 75.4 percent, while NAND revenue rose 75.7 percent year-over-year. Analysts expect high-bandwidth memory to remain a key revenue driver in the DRAM market, with projected growth of 66.3 percent, reaching $19.8 billion in 2025.

Samsungs miniature version of its popular Frame TV lineup (QLED TVs that are designed to look like wall-hanging art), the Music Frames matte backing leaves space for an 810 or 88 print to slot in. Alternatively, you can order glossy art panels to replace the matte backing entirely for a more complete look.RelatedWith its multi-speaker array and built-in woofers, the Music Frame delivers exceptional sound quality, complete with articulate treble and mids and bountiful bass. We were surprised to hear as much thump emanating from this speaker as we did! And thanks to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, youll be able to stream tunes from your phone or tablet till the cows come home! The speaker also supports AirPlay 2 and Google Cast capabilities.Other noteworthy features include Dolby Atmos, SBC, AAC, and SSC (Samsung Seamless support). • Europe has the worst imaginable idea to counter SpaceXs launch dominance
    arstechnica.com
Unicorn watch Europe has the worst imaginable idea to counter SpaceXs launch dominance This plan, if it ever gets off the ground, seems destined to fail. Eric Berger Feb 4, 2025 2:37 pm | 32 Europe's first Ariane 6 rocket takes flight for the first time on July 9, 2024. Credit: ESA - S. Corvaja Europe's first Ariane 6 rocket takes flight for the first time on July 9, 2024. Credit: ESA - S. Corvaja Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreIt is not difficult to understand the unease on the European continent about the rise of SpaceX and its controversial founder, Elon Musk.SpaceX has surpassed the European Space Agency and its institutional partners in almost every way when it comes to accessing space and providing secure communications. Last year, for example, SpaceX launched 134 orbital missions. Combined, Europe had three. SpaceX operates a massive constellation of more than 7,000 satellites, delivering broadband Internet around the world. Europe hopes to have a much more modest capability online by 2030 serving the continent at a cost of $11 billion. And Europe has good reasons for being wary about working directly with SpaceX. First, Europe wants to maintain sovereign access to space, as well as a space-based communication network. Second, buying services from SpaceX undermines European space businesses. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Musk has recently begun attacking governments in European capitals such as Berlin and London, taking up the "Make Europe Great Again" slogan. This seems to entail throwing out the moderate coalitions governing European nations and replacing them with authoritarian, hard-right leaders. All of that to say, it is understandable that Europe would like to provide a reasonable answer to the dominance of SpaceX.Bring on the bankersHowever, the approach being pursued by Airbusa European aerospace corporation that is, on a basic level, akin to Boeingseems like the dumbest idea imaginable. According to Bloomberg, "Airbus has hired Goldman Sachs Group Inc. for advice on an effort to forge a new European space and satellite company that can better compete with Elon Musks dominant SpaceX."The publication reports that talks are preliminary and include France-based Thales and Italy's Leonardo S.p.A. to create a portfolio of space services. Leonardo has hired Bank of America Inc. for the plan, which has been dubbed Project Bromo. (According to Merriam-Webster, "bromo" is a form of bromide, which originates from the Greek word brmos, meaning bad smell.)European companies have struggled to catch up to the commercial space industry that has developed in the United States over the last 15 years, which has been led by SpaceX but also includes dozens of other players. Some of this is because the European Space Agency has been slower to offer fixed-price contracts and develop a competitive environment that levels the playing field for agile new space companies with institutional players. Other reasons include a more favorable environment for entrepreneurial activity in the United States and access to venture capital. The European Space Agency has sought to change in recent years, initiating competitions such as the European Launcher Challenge. However, it is clear that Europe is far behind the United States and, to a lesser extent, China when it comes to developing a vibrant commercial space ecosystem. It is difficult to see Airbus and some of the other large, institutional space companies in Europe banding together and becoming nimble and more efficient operators in spaceflight. That would require enormous changes in companies that have decades of ossified culture, with layers of management that are difficult to cut through.ULA replay? This plan seems destined to fail. Two decades ago, the US military forced Lockheed and Boeing to merge their launch businesses to create a single company. Although there were several goals of this venture, which became United Launch Alliance, one of them was that by combining operations, the companies could avoid duplication and become more efficient. The opposite happened. Launch prices ballooned, and America consistently ceded the commercial launch market to foreign players into the 2010s, right up until when SpaceX got its Falcon 9 rocket flying frequently. The idea that some bankers from Goldman and Bank of America will go into the guts of some of Europe's largest institutional space companies and emerge with a lean, competitive entity seems far-fetched, to put it mildly. One might even expect that it would be more likely to observe unicorns dancing in a flame duct.Eric BergerSenior Space EditorEric BergerSenior Space Editor Eric Berger is the senior space editor at Ars Technica, covering everything from astronomy to private space to NASA policy, and author of two books: Liftoff, about the rise of SpaceX; and Reentry, on the development of the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon.
