  • AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D accounts for nearly all Zen 5 sales
    www.digitaltrends.com
Recent sales data from German retailer MindFactory highlights a striking trend in AMDs Zen 5 CPU lineup, with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D accounting for nearly 90% of all Ryzen 9000-series sales. The latest figures indicate that consumers overwhelmingly prefer this gaming-optimized processor over other models in the lineup. In January 2025, MindFactory recorded 25,625 total CPU sales, with AMD capturing 92.16% of the marketequivalent to 23,615 units. Intel, by contrast, managed to sell just 2,010 processors, reinforcing AMDs dominance in the consumer market.Recommended VideosAmong the Zen 5 (Ryzen 9000 series) processors, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D saw the highest demand, selling 8,390 units. This makes up a staggering 87% of all Zen 5 CPU sales.Get your weekly teardown of the tech behind PC gaming By comparison, the rest of the Ryzen 9000 series saw significantly lower numbers:Ryzen 7 9700X 640 unitsRyzen 5 9600X 250 unitsRyzen 9 9950X 230 unitsRyzen 9 9900X 180 unitsThe X3D lineup has consistently been AMDs best-selling option for gaming enthusiasts, thanks to its 3D V-Cache technology, which improves performance in CPU-heavy games. Despite selling well above its launch price of $479, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D has become the go-to choice for gamers, while the standard Zen 5 chips have struggled to attract buyers. With the 9000 series non-X3D models failing to gain traction, AMD may need to reassess its product lineup. The continued success of X3D variants suggests that consumers are willing to pay a premium for gaming performance, making it likely that the company may prioritize future X3D models over traditional CPUs.While MindFactorys data reflects sales trends in Germany, it serves as a strong indicator of global demand. If these trends continue, AMD could shift its focus toward optimizing X3D chips to sustain its market lead in the high-performance CPU space.Editors Recommendations

The raptors are back with a host of ravenous friends in the official trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth, the fourth installment in the Jurassic World series and seventh film overall in the franchise spawned by 1993's Jurassic Park.(Some spoilers for Jurassic World Dominion below.)The franchise has been lumbering along for over 20 years now with mixed success, but Jurassic World Dominion (2022) at least gave Universal a bona fide box office hit to counter all the negative reviews, grossing just over $1 billion worldwide. (It has a mere 29 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.) That film ended with dinosaurs and humans figuring out how to co-exist, the establishment of a dino sanctuary by the United Nations, and the evil corporation BioSyn in disgrace. This time around, Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali step into the leading roles since the film is meant to be a fresh start for the franchisealthough it does feature a return to the original research facility. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures across land, sea, and air within that tropical biosphere hold, in their DNA, the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.Johansson plays skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure the genetic material. down Teslas turn toxic as sales crash in Europe and the UK EV sales in the region are growing, but not for Tesla. Jonathan M. Sales are crashing in France, Germany, and the UKall affluent countries that are key markets for Tesla's electric vehicles. Coming on the heels of a large financial miss, it's just one more problem for the automaker.Tesla sales dropped around 13 percent across Europe in 2024, but so far this year, the scale of the problem is far greater. In France, sales of new Teslas fell by 63 percent, while total car sales in the country fell by just 6 percent, with EV sales dropping just half a percent.Germany was already looking like lost ground for Teslaits 41 percent drop in 2024 accounted for most of Tesla's lost sales across Europe. That must make the 59 percent drop in German Tesla sales recorded during January even more painful on the profit and loss statements.Across the Channel, the British auto industry just released its sales data for January. Here, Tesla sales fell less precipitouslyjust 12 percent. However, battery EV sales were 35 percent higher in the UK in January 2025 than in January 2024. The cake is growing, but Tesla is getting to eat less and less of it.In fact, no Tesla cracked the UK's top 10 best-seller list last month, something that has regularly happened in the past, although that may be due to having just two models for sale in most markets.Large declines have also been recorded in Sweden (44 percent), Norway (38 percent), and the Netherlands (42 percent).Tesla's limited and outdated model range is undoubtedly a contributing factor to its poor sales in Europe, and the company must be hoping that the recently facelifted Model Y crossover can stimulate more traffic at its showrooms. Its investment in the Cybertruck is of no help in the region, as the steel-clad pickup truck is too large and heavy for use with a normal driver's license and does not conform to road legality regulations. But the behavior of Tesla CEO Elon Musk could also be to blame for much of Europe's distaste for his cars. Lately, Musk has repeatedly inserted himself into European politics to create friction and promote his far-right causes. Over there, at least, it seems car buyers may be sick of him.Jonathan M. • I made chicken wings using 3 recipes from famous chefs, and the best even beat Ina Garten's
    www.businessinsider.com
I made chicken wings using recipes from chefs Guy Fieri, Ina Garten, and Sunny Anderson. Each recipe had a fairly similar wing sauce made with butter, spices, and a few other ingredients.I found Sunny Anderson's recipe made the best wings that would be perfect for Super Bowl Sunday.Super Bowl Sunday is around the corner, and there's no game-day bite quite like a good chicken wing.Unsure of which recipe to follow, I turned to celebrity chefs Guy Fieri, Ina Garten, and Sunny Anderson. Here's how the wings turned out and which chef had my favorite game-day recipe. It didn't surprise me that Fieri's recipe had more ingredients than the others Guy Fieri's dry rub alone used six different spices. Chelsea Davis Fieri's recipe calls for a dry rub with cumin, black and white pepper, dry mustard, cayenne pepper, and garlic. The ingredients list felt long, but I wasn't surprised as I'd recently made his trash-can nachos which were also quite in-depth.After I patted the wings dry, I tossed them with the spice mixture and let them sit in the fridge for an hour. I preheated the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.I baked the wings for 50 minutes, turning them halfway through the cook time The spices baked on nicely. Chelsea Davis While the wings were baking, I made Fieri's wing sauce. I combined lime juice, vinegar, Crystal hot sauce, some of the dry rub mix, jalapeo, garlic, and olive oil. After heating the mixture in a saucepan, I let it cool and tossed the wings with the sauce.I could definitely taste the jalapeo and lime juice Guy Fieri's wings had a nice kick to them. Chelsea Davis These wings were super tasty but not for the faint of heart. They packed a good punch thanks to the minced jalapeo and hot sauce, but the lime juice rounded out the taste. The chicken itself wasn't as juicy as I would've liked, though the wings were extremely flavorful.Next, I tried Garten's straightforward wing recipe, which included a dipping sauce I combined melted butter and spices to make the sauce. Chelsea Davis Garten's sauce recipe was simple: combine melted butter, hot sauce, cayenne pepper, and salt.I brushed the wings with the mixture and cooked them under the broiler about 3 inches below the heat for eight minutes. After that, I turned the wings over, re-brushed them, and broiled them for four more minutes.Garten's recipe also included a dipping sauce made with blue cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, milk, Worcestershire, salt, and pepper. My wings didn't turn out great, but Garten's dip was awesome The wings I made using Ina Garten's recipe didn't come out looking as I expected. Chelsea Davis These wings were super juicy but didn't get very crispy or golden brown, even after leaving them in the oven for longer than the recipe stated. The sauce didn't completely coat the wings, and the flavor of it was underwhelming.Although I didn't love the wings, I'd absolutely make the dip again. Ina Garten's wing dipping sauce blew me away. Chelsea Davis It was addictive, with a savory taste from the Worcestershire and no overwhelmingly strong blue-cheese flavor that many chicken-wing dips have. The last recipe I made was Anderson's, which felt the most labor-intensive The recipe called for a variety of spices. Chelsea Davis For Anderson's recipe, I coated the wings in flour, cayenne, salt, and pepper and let them sit for an hour in the mixture to dry out.I cooked my wings a little differently I don't recommend this frying method unless you're comfortable cooking with hot oil. Chelsea Davis The recipe says to deep-fry the wings in a deep stockpot, but I was a little intimidated and low on oil, so I did a more shallow fry.I heated up oil in a pan and cooked the wings for about 25 minutes, flipping them halfway. My chicken wings turned out crispy and golden brown. Chelsea Davis The wings came out surprisingly crispy, like real fried chicken. I tried one before coating it in sauce and it was super flavorful from the flour-seasoning mixture and the deep-fried taste.Anderson's sauce was a simple mixture of lemon, basil, butter, and Frank's wing sauce The recipe tasted like a typical Buffalo sauce. Chelsea Davis I tossed the wings in the Buffalo sauce and prepared Anderson's blue-cheese dip, which was very similar to Garten's.To make it, I combined blue cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, buttermilk, lemon juice, garlic, salt, and pepper. This wing was my favorite, thanks to the crispiness of the skin The wings had a crispy texture that didn't get soggy even after getting coated in sauce. Chelsea Davis I couldn't stop eating these deep-fried wings. Although the breading and dipping sauce were not especially unique, the texture and juiciness of the wings made this recipe a winner. Each recipe was tasty, but Anderson's wings are my top choice Sunny Anderson's wings had the best crispy texture. Chelsea Davis If I could, I'd take aspects from each chef's recipe to make the ultimate chicken wing. I'd use my play on Anderson's frying method, Fieri's spicy Buffalo-style sauce, and Garten's blue-cheese dip.I enjoyed the zing of Fieri's Buffalo-style sauce and thought that Garten's dip alone elevated her wing recipe. However, if I had to pick a winner, I'd say Anderson's recipe got me the best, crispiest chicken wings. They were classic, flavorful, and exactly what I wanted from a chicken wing.Check out the other celebrity-chef recipes we've put head-to-head so far. This story was originally published on February 8, 2022, and most recently updated on February 5, 2025.

  • USAID is on Trump and Musk's cost-cutting list. Here's where the foreign aid agency spends its money.
    www.businessinsider.com
USAID distributed nearly $32.5 billion in aid in 2024, mainly to Africa and the Middle East. Many Republicans argue USAID is wasteful, while some Democrats say shuttering the agency is unconstitutional.Proposed USAID cuts may reduce aid to Ukraine, Jordan, and Ethiopia.Proposed cuts to the US Agency for International Development could reduce assistance to Ukraine, Jordan, and Ethiopia.Data for fiscal year 2024 shows that USAID distributed nearly $32.5 billion in aid that year, much of it to Africa or the Middle East.On Tuesday evening, USAID staff received anemailstating thatstarting Friday,"all USAID direct hire personnel will be placed on administrative leave globally, with the exception of designated personnel responsible for mission-critical functions, core leadership, and specially designated programs." The email further said that essential staff would be notified on Thursday afternoon and that the agency would begin moving international staff back to the US within 30 days. The US spends more on humanitarian aid than other countries by wide margins, though foreign aid spending is under 1% of the federal budget. The US provides some amount of aid to most countries, including nearly every country in Africa and Asia. Many polls have shown a majority of Americans believe the US is spending too much on foreign aid, including to Ukraine. The White House did not respond to a request for comment. In 2024, the US donated over $5.4 billion in aid to Ukraine through USAID, most of which was through macroeconomic support to assist in its war with Russia. The agency gave over $1.23 billion to Jordan last year, most through a cash transfer to the government in exchange for Jordan cooperating with US interests, such as providing intelligence support and housing Syrian refugees.USAID also gave slightly over $1.2 billion to Ethiopia and nearly that amount to Congo amid continued conflict, climate shocks, and food shortages.Other countries receiving hundreds of millions of dollars from the agency included South Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria, Sudan, and Yemen.Of the $32.5 billion in spending, about a quarter went to humanitarian purposes, while another quarter went to health and population. The agency allocated about $7 billion to governance and another $3.6 billion to administrative costs.USAID devoted over $2.3 billion to fighting AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria globally, about $290 million to making vaccines and immunization more widespread, and nearly $188 million to international development and capital investment.USAID, founded in 1961 during the Cold War, had three top partners in 2024: the World Bank Group, which received $4 billion; the World Food Program, which received $3.4 billion; and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, which received $2.3 billion.About a quarter of USAID funding came from the Economic Support Fund, while $7.4 billion came from the Department of State and global health programs.Democrats and Republicans have been split on USAID's standing. While many Democrats say cutting USAID spending could have widespread negative impacts on millions of people in war-torn or developing countries and could cost Americans thousands of jobs Republicans argue USAID spending is often wasteful and not in the US' best interests.Donald Trump and Elon Musk have attacked USAID and other foreign aid programs over the last few weeks. Musk called USAID a "criminal organization" in a post on X, while Trump told reporters on Sunday that USAID is "run by a bunch of radical lunatics."Some legal analysts and Democratic politicians have argued that only an act of Congress can shut down an independent agency like USAID. Though Trump and Musk have argued that there is fraud in USAID, some experts have pushed back on these claims."We don't have a fourth branch of government called Elon Musk, and that's going to become real clear," said Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin at a press conference outside the USAID headquarters on Monday. "This illegal, unconstitutional interference with congressional power is threatening lives all over the world."Secretary of State Marco Rubio was named USAID's acting director on Monday and has advocated for foreign assistance agencies to be more transparent about how aid is being implemented. Rubio said the administration is reviewing each program to see if it makes the US safer, stronger, and more prosperous. At the start of Trump's presidency, his administration froze billions in humanitarian aid, stating that many foreign assistance programs promote liberal agendas or cost the US unnecessarily large amounts. Are you a federal worker who wants to share your story with a reporter? • It’s about to get harder to find your prescription drugs
    www.vox.com
The United States, despite being the richest country in the world and a biopharmaceutical powerhouse, has long struggled with drug shortages. At any given time, up to 100 or more sometimes many more drugs are not readily available to American patients, largely because drug manufacturing operates with very little slack that leaves it vulnerable to disruptions. Sometimes, these are specialty drugs for, say, cancer patients who have certain genetics potentially devastating for those individuals. Other times, as with the recent ADHD medication shortages, it can involve widely prescribed drugs with health impacts that can affect millions of people. There are moments when these shortages cant be helped. As I wrote in 2022, the pandemics supply chain disruption was the kind of natural emergency that creates unavoidable, acute drug shortages. Americans found it harder to find drugs like Tamiflu or inhalers with albuterol because the manufacturers were having a harder time getting their hands on the raw ingredients for those medicines, which can come from all over the world. But those Covid-induced bottlenecks have largely subsided. The US saw a decline in drug shortages over the course of 2024, from 321 drugs to 271, closer to their pre-pandemic levels. The number of new drug shortages, each of which can last for years, fell to the second-lowest total since 2007.A little good news, right? Heres the bad news: President Donald Trumps tariffs on China could erase that progress. Why tariffs are a problem for generic drugsDrug shortages are usually accidental. A pandemic. A factory machine needs repair. Ingredients become tainted. But this time, it would be engineered. The potential for disruption is enormous: China, which this week has been hit with a 10 percent across-the-board tariff, is the largest supplier of drug or drug ingredients to the US. Pharmaceutical drugs and their components are still the single largest American import from around the world, as longtime health care journalist Merrill Goozner wrote on Monday. Generic drugmakers, which produce 90 percent of the prescription drugs in the US and often depend on Chinese chemical imports, dont have easy recourse. It will be difficult for them to raise prices to make up for the additional tariff costs theres a good reason for that, but it has the potential to fuel shortages with a trade war afoot. The US has put rules in place to stop drugmakers from hiking their prices, because egregious costs have made medications unaffordable for too many Americans. Under the Medicaid program, for example, drug companies must pay rebates to the program if they raise prices faster than inflation. In the absence of a global trade war, that is a sound cost control. But that rule and others like it were not contemplated in a scenario in which the US is placing massive tariffs on its biggest trade partners. If you face inflation rebates, you are not able to pass on the tariffs onto buyers. If you also have low margins, you may not be able to absorb those tariffs, Marta Wosiska, a senior fellow in economic studies at the Brookings Institution, told STAT News this week. You may exit the market and this in turn could result in shortages because drug markets dont easily rebound to shocks.Other companies are not likely to step in to fill the gap. Why would they? The original manufacturer already decided the business wasnt economically viable. In 2021, economists from the European Center for International Political Economy estimated the potential impact of hypothetical 25 percent tariffs from the US and Europe on drugs and their ingredients. Chinas exports of finished medications would effectively disappear, dropping by 81 percent, and their exports of raw materials used to manufacture drugs to other countries would drop by 8 percent.China would also experience a significant decline in the production of pharmaceuticals and chemical products, the analysts wrote. Given the importance of China for supplying the global generic market, these declines would translate into reduced access to medicines and higher prices in many jurisdictions. This theoretical scenario doesnt map perfectly onto Trumps new China tariffs. But it approximates the scale of the risk the president is taking. The US increasingly depends on China not only for raw pharmaceutical ingredients but for fully produced medications: American imports of finished Chinese-made medicines have increased by 600 percent since 2016; some cardiovascular drugs, pain relievers, and cold medicine have had especially large increases. If those products suddenly disappear from US pharmacy shelves, its not clear how we would replace them. The theory of the Trump tariffs is that an American manufacturer will step in. That is far from guaranteed, though. Generic drugs are a tough business. Why the US is so vulnerable to drug shortagesShortages are a core vulnerability for the US drug market. We depend on generic drugs to keep medications affordable. But because of their lower costs, generic drugmakers do not make excess products to store away for a rainy day (or a future drug shortage). They are vulnerable to even small fluctuations in price, from supply chain disruptions or tariffs, because their profit margins are generally small. They depend on scale, not margins, to make money. Generic drug competition is also often limited for any given class of drug, so if one firm shuts down or discontinues a product, there is not another company to make up for the shortfall.Heres what I wrote in a 2022 story on the Covid pandemics drug shortages:According to a 2022 report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, on average, the number of ongoing drug shortages has been increasing and are lasting longer. The root cause of that problem, per a report from the Food and Drug Administration, is the economics of the pharmaceutical market itself. The reasons for shortages are generally consistent no matter the drug: either a shortage of raw materials or a problem at the plant where the drug is manufactured. Shortages for medicines that a patient can pick up at the pharmacy often draw the most headlines, but most of the medications that end up in short supply are generic, injectable drugs that are used in hospitals: usually, these drugs have only one or two suppliers. So if there is a problem at the factory of one company, there is not an easy way to scale up production to make up for a shortfall. And they are usually cheap, which means the companies that manufacture them do not have a strong economic incentive to produce any excess supply. We havent invested in expanding the capacity our country needs. Its costly. If youre going to sell something for a dollar a vial, theres no incentive to invest there, said Erin Fox, a pharmacist at the University of Utah who has studied drug shortages. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it from their perspective. But when you think about it from the hospital perspective, its very frustrating.Once the supply is disrupted, its impossible to quickly make up for the shortfall. These companies rely on razor-thin margins and massive scale to make their business work. They have a just in time production schedule, which means almost as soon as the product rolls out of the factory, it is delivered to health care providers. There arent warehouses with emergency stockpiles, because it wouldnt really make financial sense for manufacturers to produce and store the excess supply. And it is sometimes lifesaving medications that become unavailable. People die as a result. If you look at the current shortages, the most common types of drugs in short supply are antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, and medications that affect the central nervous system.Research has shown that these shortages of essential medicines can translate directly to harm for patients:Some of these shortages have led directly to patient deaths. An Associated Press report in 2011 linked at least 15 deaths over the prior 15 months to drug shortages. A more recent study, following the year-long shortage of a drug used to treat septic shock, found higher mortality rates for patients who relied on a substitute. Even short of death, drug shortages can meaningfully change the care patients get if, for example, a pregnant person undergoes a cesarean delivery, with its higher risk of complications and longer recovery time, because the drug that could have induced labor earlier is out of stock. For now, it does not appear the Trump administration is making any allowances to ensure life-saving medications arent taken off the market because of its trade policy. The trade association for generic drugmakers has lobbied for such an exemption; the first Trump administration had imposed more limited tariffs on China, but did provide such an exemption. But this time, there was no change before Tuesdays deadline. From the base ingredients to the finished products, US medicines rely on a global supply chain that is already stressed and in need of strengthening. John Murphy III, president and CEO of the Association for Accessible Medicines, said in a statement. Tariffs on products from Canada, Mexico, and China could increase already problematic drug shortages. The last-minute deals with Canada and Mexico have (at least temporarily) softened some of the blow. But China is a bigger importer of prescription drugs than either of our neighbors. It may take time for the consequences to be felt. But if bad outcomes do eventually befall American patients because of the tariffs, it should come as no surprise. Its basic economics. And its entirely avoidable.Youve read 1 article in the last monthHere at Vox, we're unwavering in our commitment to covering the issues that matter most to you threats to democracy, immigration, reproductive rights, the environment, and the rising polarization across this country. Our mission is to provide clear, accessible journalism that empowers you to stay informed and engaged in shaping our world. • Switch 2 Nintendo Direct time announced as console exclusives teased
    metro.co.uk
Two months to go (Nintendo)We might still be two months away from the Switch 2 Direct, but Nintendo has confirmed exactly when the presentation will happen.Nintendos Switch 2 reveal was peculiar in many ways, but one of the weirder notes was how long we have to wait for more news about the console. In the brief unveiling video, which showed off the revamped Joy-Cons and mouse-like functionality, Nintendo announced a Direct presentation dedicated to the Switch 2 for April 2, 2025, which is nearly three months after the initial console reveal. In another peculiar move, Nintendo has now confirmed the time for the presentation but absolutely nothing else. When is the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct? The Switch 2 presentation will air on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at 2pm BST. This translates to 3pm CET in Europe, and 6am PT/9am ET in the US.Nintendo has not confirmed how long the presentation will be, or what exactly will be shown beyond a closer look at the console itself with no mention of anything to do with games. While Nintendo is notoriously difficult to predict, the company is expected to announce the consoles price and launch date. Its likely well get another look at the next Mario Kart too, which was shown in the initial reveal, and possibly see other games which may be available at launch.https://www.instagram.com/p/DFsbrGptom_/What games are coming out for the Switch 2?Apart from showing footage of a new Mario Kart, Nintendo has not officially announced any games for the Nintendo Switch 2. The console is backwards compatible though, so any original Switch games will work on the system. As for third party support, there have been rumours of Tekken 8, Red Dead Redemption 2, and ports of various Xbox games, but nothing has been confirmed. However, it seems clear that Nintendo has told third party publishers not to reveal their plans for the Switch 2 yet and so its very likely that theyre waiting for the Nintendo Direct to do so.In terms of Nintendo titles, as big question is whether Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokmon Legends Z-A, which were already announced for the original Nintendo Switch, could become cross-gen titles with the Switch 2. This, however, may have been debunked by Nintendo recently in an earnings call. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond are you a secret cross-gen game? (Nintendo)When asked if new games will still be released for Nintendo Switch in light of the Switch 2 (as translated on ResetEra), Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa reaffirmed that both Metroid Prime 4 and Pokmon Legends Z-A are still coming out on the system in 2025.We will continue developing Nintendo Switch titles, but launching exclusive games for Nintendo Switch 2 is essential for its success, he added. However, we aim to ensure a smooth transition between the two platforms. While this doesnt rule out either Metroid Prime 4 or Pokmon Legends Z-A being cross-gen titles, or having some kind of improvements on the Switch 2, it certainly sounds like Nintendo has some separate system exclusives up its sleeve to attract fans.More TrendingAs for the original Switch, another Direct presentation is rumoured to be taking place this month dedicated to the console which might feature a Kirby: Planet Robobot port and a secret mystery game. A new Mario Kart is the only Switch 2 game we know of (YouTube)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.GameCentralSign up for exclusive analysis, latest releases, and bonus community content. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. • A Lot of People Just Refused to Make Ransomware Payments in 2024: Report
    gizmodo.com
By Todd Feathers Published February 5, 2025 | Comments (0) | Ransomware was less lucrative in 2024 compared to years past. JL Stock/Shutterstock Ransomware victims paid out 35% less to hacking groups in 2024 compared to 2023 even as the overall number of attacks increased, according to a report by the blockchain research firm Chainalysis. The large dropfrom $1.25 billion in ransom payments in 2023 to $813.55 million last yearcame as international law enforcement operations disrupted some major hacking groups and others abruptly closed up shop. In February the FBI, U.K. National Crime Agency, and other police agencies made several arrests and seized servers and websites used by the ransomware gang Lockbit, which is believed to have been responsible for thousands of attacks that cost victims more than $120 million. Not long after, another prolific ransomware group, known as Blackcat or ALPHV, abruptly stopped operating. A message was posted to its website saying that it had been seized by law enforcement, but some of those agencies denied their involvement and experts suspected it may have been an exit scam. Chainalysis found that the gap is growing between how much money attackers demand in exchange for relinquishing compromised data and how much victims actually pay. Reporting from incident response firms suggests a majority of clients opt not to pay altogether, according to the report.Reliable data on the number of ransomware attacks and their full impact is hard to come by. As Chainalysis noted, leak sites where hacking groups post about their successful infiltrations are full of fabricated or repeated incidents. And victims whose sensitive data has been compromised often downplay attacks and keep the details of payment negotiations secret. The $813.55 million paid out in 2024 was also less than ransomware victims paid out in 2020 and 2021, according to Chainalysis, even though after the first half of the year the ransom sum was on track to exceed previous years. Payments dropped sharply from July through December, which has become something of a pattern in recent years but was particularly pronounced in 2024.The market never returned to the previous status quo following the collapse of LockBit and BlackCat/ALPHV, Lizzie Cookson, senior director of incident response at Coveware, told Chainalysis. We saw a rise in lone actors, but we did not see any group(s) swiftly absorb their market share, as we had seen happen after prior high-profile takedowns and closures. The current ransomware ecosystem is infused with a lot of newcomers who tend to focus efforts on the small- to mid-size markets, which in turn are associated with more modest ransom demands.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By AJ Dellinger Published February 4, 2025 By Todd Feathers Published January 31, 2025 By Matthew Gault Published January 22, 2025 By AJ Dellinger Published January 14, 2025 By Thomas Maxwell Published January 8, 2025 By Lucas Ropek Published January 7, 2025
