• Wycliffe Stutchbury Configures Miniature Wood Shingles into Mesmerizing Arrangements

He creates handmade wood shingles made from a range of sources like bog oak, holly, and ash, arranging the pieces into elemental compositions.I work with wood because it is full of surprises, and it is a miraculous material, Stutchbury tells Colossal. Its character, texture, fragility, robustness, and the way in which it records the passing of time I really just see myself as an editor of nature.Hundred Foot Drain 15, excavated bog oak, 180 x 80 centimeters, Chatteris, CambridgeshireThe artist is fascinated by the human relationship with landscape, or what he describes as the struggle between our desire to impose form on the natural world and its unwillingness to conform. No matter how we try to manipulate, use, or suppress the natural environment, it always shapes our efforts.Stutchbury was formally trained as a furniture maker, and when he graduated from university, he focused on making what he calls miniature realities, or very precise models of everyday things, which he exhibited in large, white spaces. After university, he moved into a studio with some fellow graduates. The artist realizedhe needed to put the nose to the grindstone and began to gravitate back to woodworking. One day, I was walking home and the neighbours house was being re-roofed, the artist says. The builders had left the old roofing battens in the front garden, and I asked if I could take them away. The rain and sun and time had produced these wonderful colours on the timber. With his mind still in miniature mode, Stutchbury imagined a small tiled roof, and a textural wall panel clad with little shingles emerged. The rest is history, as they say. Over time, he experimented with different types of foraged wood, making larger panels, multi-piece installations, tapestry-like wall hangings and, most recently, architectural interventions.Detail of The CraigHis project The Craig, a title derived from the Gaelic word for rock, reinterprets the exterior cladding of a 17th-century stone barn in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. Following the contours of the original stonework and the covered aisle through the center, Stutchbury applied hundreds of shingles in a delicately undulating pattern. The artist harvested material for The Craig exclusively from fallen branches in the adjacent woods. The title for each work is provided by the location that the timber is found, he says. I seek out fallen and forgotten wood, and how it has responded to its surroundings and environment provides me with the platform to work from.Stutchbury follows where the work takes him. Although I strive to apply my own structure to these works through concentration and technical skill, I fail, he says, adding:I make mistakes, my concentration wanders, I change my mind, (and) I cant maintain a straight line or a perfect sphere. I find I am being pulled toward an intuitive way of working, like stacking firewood. So, I allow the timber I have before me to lead the way, and through a process of editing, I try and reveal the qualities and narrative held within it.The artist has been busy with commissions, including a trip in May to Mainea region rich with Shingle Style architecturewhere he will clad one elevation of a house on the coast. • Google Cloud revenue soars as Alphabet continues to ride AI wave
    www.computerweekly.com
NewsGoogle Cloud revenue soars as Alphabet continues to ride AI waveAlphabets fourth-quarter results revealed a 30% increase in revenue for the companys cloud arm, fuelled by demand for its artificial intelligence offeringsByCaroline Donnelly,Senior Editor, UKPublished: 05 Feb 2025 16:59 Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has committed to continue investing in its cloud arm, as the firms fourth-quarter results confirmed Google Clouds revenue increased by 30% to $12bn in the three months to 31 December 2024.The year-on-year uptick in Google Clouds quarterly revenue was led by growth in the companys core cloud infrastructure offerings, as well as growing demand for its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and generative AI (GenAI) propositions, said Alphabet in its financial statement. The company previously forecast that it would end 2024 with its combined Cloud and YouTube divisions on an annual revenue run rate of more than $100bn, but the performance of both has exceeded expectations, said Pichai. Our AI-powered Google Cloud portfolio is seeing stronger customer demand, and YouTube continues to be the leader in streaming watch-time and podcasts, said Pichai, in a statement.Together, [Google] Cloud and YouTube exited 2024 at an annual revenue run rate of $110bn we are confident of the opportunities ahead, and to accelerate our progress, we expect to invest approximately $75bn in capital expenditure in 2025.On a conference call, to discuss the companys financial results in more detail, Pichai said the company was rolling out products to the market faster than ever before, which is reflected in the growing product usage and revenue it is seeing. Our sophisticated global network of cloud regions and datacentres provides a powerful foundation for us and our customers, directly driving revenue, he said, in comments transcribed by Seeking Alpha. We have a unique advantage, because we develop every component of our technology stack, including hardware, compilers, models and products. This approach allows us to drive efficiencies at every level, from training and serving, to developer productivity. The knock-on effect of this is that the company was able to build 11 new cloud regions and datacentre campuses in the US and the rest of the world in 2024, while making incremental improvements in the performance of the hardware that sits within these facilities during this time period.Google datacentres deliver nearly [four times] more computing power per unit of electricity compared to just five years ago. These efficiencies, coupled with the scalability, cost and performance we offer, are why organisations increasingly choose Google Clouds platform, Pichai continued. In fact, today, cloud customers consume more than [eight times] the compute capacity for training and inferencing compared to 18 months ago. Well continue to invest in our cloud business to ensure we can address the increase in customer demand. On that point, Pichai said the number of first-time commitments it received from new Google Cloud customers in 2024 was more than double the number it got in 2023.We also deepened [our existing] customer relationships, he added. Last year, we closed several strategic deals over $1bn, and the number of deals over $250m doubled from the prior year.Lee Sustar, principal analyst at IT market watcher Forrester, said the way Pichai flagged the performance of Google Cloud and YouTube in its results suggests he is trying to signal to the market and investors that Alphabets fortunes are not solely dependent on the companys search advertising business. If Google Cloud were a separate company, its AI-driven earnings growth would simply please investors and confirm to customers that the company is a long-term and innovative player for the enterprise IT market, said Sustar. However, Google Cloud is part of a complex feedback loop to the rest of the Alphabet portfolio that also requires big investments in AI, such as the ad-driven Search business and YouTube.Thats apparently why Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai packaged Cloud and YouTube as a combined success story, citing an annual run rate of $110bn a message to investors that Alphabet is less dependent on search advertising than in the past.Enterprise business customers looking for long-term bets on AI cloud services will have to take a closer look and assess the investment plans forGoogle Cloud and is competitors, added Sustar.Read more cloud and AI newsGoogle Clouds secure AI framework thats integrated into its Vertex AI platform offers practical tools and guidance to manage the lifecycle, data governance and operational risks of AI.MPs launch inquiry into the use of artificial intelligence technologies in the financial services sector. In The Current Issue:Forrester: Why digitisation needs strong data engineering skillsLabours first digital government strategy: Is it dj vu or something new?Download Current IssueData engineering - Stack Overflow: Building the foundations of AIintelligence CW Developer NetworkAmazefit T-Rex 3 Inspect-a-GadgetView All Blogs

  • Verizon Makes $120 Google Offer To Android And IOS Users

The Google Gemini app logo appears on the screen of a smartphone in Reno, United States, on November ... [+] 21, 2024. (Photo by Jaque Silva/NurPhoto via Getty Images)NurPhoto via Getty ImagesVerizon will soon offer a discounted Google One AI Premium subscription to its customers, the company has announced.Starting February 6th, the carrier will expand its current list of discounted perks by adding Googles AI-powered cloud storage subscription for $10 a month, half of its regular $19.99 monthly price. That comes to a total saving of almost $120.For that, Verizon customers get access to 2TB of cloud storage, Gemini Advanced and Gemini in Workspace apps (Gmail, Docs and others).Subscribers also get access to Googles member benefits, including the following.Unlimited Magic Editor saves in Google Photos10% money-back on Google Store purchasesSharing the AI Premium Plan with family members until June 30thGemini Advanced is the headline offer and the extra storage is essential for digital hoarders, but Googles extra benefits are also an important part of the deal. I have found the unlimited Magic Editor saves more useful than I expected. The 10% refund on Google Store purchases will also come in handy when Google launches another product sale, as it has done repeatedly over the last 18 months. There are, however, three missing pieces of the puzzle in Googles storage plan; YouTube Premium, Fitbit Premium and Nest Aware. The latter two have been rolled into the $20-a-month subscription for U.K. customers, but U.S. customers have been left out.MORE FOR YOUSimilarly, Google has remained steadfast on keeping YouTube Premium separate from its entire subscription line up. The only deal available on YouTube Premium right now comes from Verizon, which is an option in its perk bundle at $10 a monthsaving $3.99.A potentially cheaper way to access Googles AI premium is buying an unlocked Pixel 9 directly from Google, which comes with a year free of Google One AI Premium, and then picking up a cheap SIM-only deal. You will get all of the above benefits without being tied to Verizons pricing plans. If you do that, wait until Google discounts the Pixel 9 again.

  • Several Governments Ban DeepSeek For Security Concerns
    techreport.com
Key TakeawaysItaly, Thailand, Taiwan, and US states like Texas have banned DeepSeek due to security concerns, mainly because of its Chinese origin and potential data-sharing obligations with the Chinese government. The apps popularity was overshadowed by exposed security vulnerabilities, including massive data leaks and an uncooperative stance from the company regarding privacy concerns, which worsened its case. With ongoing investigations and a lack of transparency, DeepSeek may face more bans and legal actions unless it addresses the privacy and security issues raised by governments and security analysts.Several countries, including Italy, Thailand, and Taiwan have banned the newest AI sensation in their countries. A few states of the US, including Texas, have also prohibited DeepSeek. Why, you ask? Because its a Chinese app. Its simple reasoning: Chinese apps are owned by the Chinese government, and if the Chinese government mandates DeepSeek to share any data with Chinese intelligence agencies, it has no other option but to agree. This is almost exactly why TikTok fell out of favor with the United States in the first place. It needed a newly elected President to save TikTok, but it doesnt look like DeepSeek is going to be saved, especially given how its actually threatening the entire US AI industry. This has raised strong concerns about cross-border information transmission and data leaks through DeepSeek. When asked to speak on the matter, the company maintained silence, which worsened its case and led to a complete ban.The R1 model of the AI quickly became popular after its launch and took ChatGPTs throne to become the most downloaded free AI app on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. The app is also made at a considerably lower cost, raising eyebrows on the several millions spent on US AI infrastructure. While DeepSeek matches the AI benchmarks of its competitors like ChatGPT and Gemini, when the accusations were placed, the initial enthusiasm quickly wore off. Security analysts found massive holes in DeepSeeks security with exposed databases revealing chat prompts and internal data.Which Countries Have Banned DeepSeek?Italy has completely outlawed DeepSeek, while Taiwan has prohibited its use by government agencies, public sector workers, and any provider of critical infrastructure. Before banning, the Italian government posed a few questions related to the use of personal data. While there wasnt any official statement from DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence, there are reports that the company disagreed to cooperate with the requests and was eventually blocked. Not a good look, honestly! Not only did DeepSeeks response not give us any reassurance, it worsened their position, and thats the reason we decided to order the block. Agostino Ghiglia, a member of the Italian data authoritys boardThe UK, on the other hand, issued just a warning to the citizens about the concerns and currently doesnt seem to have any plans to ban DeepSeek. While the US government is still investigating the security implications and taking its time to take a final call, Texas becomes the first state in the country to issue a ban on the app.NASA, too, has enforced a ban saying the app wont be authorized for use with NASAs data and information or on government-issued devices and networks. The current situation doesnt look all that great for DeepSeek, and we can only expect more lawsuits and bans to follow if the company doesnt speak up about its privacy laws or find a way to address these security concerns because too much damage is done.Add Techreport to Your Google News Feed Get the latest updates, trends, and insights delivered straight to your fingertips. • This massive 173% mechanical keyboard is a tribute to the classic space-cadet keyboard
    www.techspot.com
In brief: Compact, tenkeyless boards are quite popular among keyboard enthusiasts. There are far fewer choices at the opposite end of the spectrum, however, but one option does stand out from the crowd due to the sheer number of keys it contains. The Hyper7 R4 from Mechboards is a 173 percent keyboard that was originally designed by Proto[Typist] as a tribute to the classic space-cadet keyboard. It's absolutely massive, measuring 59.5 x 22 x 6.5 cm (23.42 x 8.66 x 2.5 in), and tips the scales at a hefty 17.6 pounds. The board features 178 keys laid out in half a dozen separate blocks, including a huge array of programmable keys at the top that are elevated and tilted at a 45-degree angle. It's offered in your choice of classic or modern layouts and four colors: black, grey, cream, or bare stainless steel.Tom's Hardware spent some time with a prototype build of the Hyper7 R4, and provided some insightful feedback to prospective buyers. The board's layout is anything but familiar, despite the classic / modern layout choices. Not all of the standard keys are in the location you're accustomed to, others have unique sizes, and some common keys are missing outright. Translation it'd going to be difficult to ever get used to the unique layout. There are also a ton of macro keys with labels that don't apply to most use cases although fortunately, these can be remapped to better fit your needs. // Related StoriesPricing is also a major consideration. The Hyper7 R4 starts at $350 but that doesn't include components like keycaps, switches, or stabilizers, or assembly to put it all together. Enthusiasts may already have switches they want to use but if not, you'll need to factor that into the overall cost.If you're interested in the Hyper7 R4, I'd highly recommend checking out the Tom's Hardware piece. The board was initially offered as part of a limited run group buy, which has since expired. There are still a few extra units in stock, however, so it's still possible to get your hands on this unique piece of hardware if you act fast.

  • US Air Force fuses two wrecked F-35s together to build a sky-worthy "Franken-bird" for just $6M
    www.techspot.com
TL;DR: The US Air Force has done something pretty wild. It has pieced together two F-35A Lightning II fighter jets, recovered from accidents. Dubbed "Franken-bird," it was a massive re-engineering feat that took almost a year to complete. Yet, the enormous repair job only cost the Air Force around $6 million. Combining major structures from separate F-35s to build a fully operational plane is an Air Force first. Both these damaged jets would've otherwise ended up as expensive scrap metal. One jet suffered a nose gear collapse at Hill in 2020, while the other dealt with an engine fire at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida in 2014.The crew behind this impressive project were the airmen from the 388th Fighter Wing at Hill Air Force Base in Utah. They also had help from the F-35 Joint Program Office, Ogden Air Logistics Complex, and Lockheed Martin. The teams got creative, fabricating specialized tools and equipment to join the disparate aircraft sections. Once reassembled, they shipped the Franken-bird's airframe to the 388th's hangar at Hill."When we received the aircraft, it was pretty much a shell," said Senior Airman Jaguar Arnold, the dedicated crew chief on the project. "There were a lot of tasks to complete that we hadn't done before at the unit level."The airmen had to rebuild the whole jet entirely rewiring it from scratch, reconstructing the cockpit and avionics, and reapplying the radar-absorbing coating for its stealth capabilities. They worked long hours alongside Lockheed technicians but eventually managed to restore and reinstall everything from the landing gear to flight controls. After successful ground tests and flight checks at Hill, the 388th sent the rebuilt jet to Lockheed's Fort Worth, Texas, facilities for final certifications. It will eventually return to the 388th Fighter Wing to rejoin front-line operations under the 4th Fighter Squadron.Of course, the project being a first of its kind meant that getting the Franken-bird back in the air as a truly operational unit was uncharted territory. So, the maintainers provided a lot of feedback. This info will get rolled into the technical guides that all F-35 teams use, which will help ensure proper future maintenance to keep these jets safe. // Related StoriesMost impressively, the restoration's expenses remained under $6 million. By comparison, a new F-35A Lightning II costs over $80 million. The Air Force's ability to resurrect a cutting-edge fighter from salvaged remnants represents an impressive achievement as well as substantial savings.Image credit: 388th Fighter Wing

Its sleek design and slim profile enhance its aesthetic appeal and make it comfortable to hold for extended periods, allowing users to navigate with ease. The S25 Plus has advanced display features, such as a high refresh rate, providing smooth scrolling and responsiveness, which benefits gamers and multimedia enthusiasts alike. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 embraces an innovative foldable design, proudly featuring a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display that folds in half. This remarkable engineering allows the device to transform into a compact and pocketable form when closed, making it ideal for users who value portability without sacrificing a full-screen experience. The Z Flip 6 also boasts a cover screen, significantly enhancing its functionality. Whether users prefer the refined design of the S25 Plus or the innovative approach of the Z Flip 6, both smartphones provide exciting features tailored to modern lifestyles.Youll find they are pretty similar when comparing the Galaxy S25 Plus display to the traditional Galaxy Z Flip 6 display. However, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 also features a cover display, which adds an extra element that you might find appealing. This gives that phone the edge.Winner: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6Nirave Gondhia / Digital TrendsThe Galaxy S25 Plus and the Galaxy Z Flip 6 deliver impressive performance for users, but the newer Galaxy S25 Plus has a notable edge. This is primarily due to its advanced hardware configuration, designed to meet the demands of todays applications and multitasking needs. The Galaxy S25 Plus is powered by Qualcomms latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, an advanced processor known for its superior speed and efficiency. This chip incorporates enhancements that improve graphic rendering, AI capabilities, and overall computing power. In contrast, the Z Flip 6 has the slightly older Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. Although the Gen 3 has proven to be a capable performer, it does not quite match the raw power or the efficiency of the newer Snapdragon 8 Elite.Benchmark tests highlight the performance differences, showing that the S25 Plus consistently excels in CPU-intensive tasks, graphics rendering, and gaming scenarios. For instance, when running demanding applications like high-end mobile games or video editing software, the S25 Plus maintains smoother frame rates and quicker load times. While both devices handle everyday tasks effortlessly, with capabilities such as web browsing, social media usage, and media playback, the Galaxy S25 Pluss superior performance makes it particularly appealing for users who engage in more demanding applications or use their phones for gaming or productivity tasks. Ultimately, while the Galaxy Z Flip 6 remains stylish and capable, the Galaxy S25 Plus is the more powerful option for those seeking cutting-edge performance. One wildcard: The Galaxy Z Flip 6 has an IP48 rating, while the Galaxy S25 Plus boasts an IP68 rating. IP68 is completely dust-tight, providing superior dust protection, while IP48 only guards against larger objects but not fine dust. Both ratings indicate water resistance, but IP68 offers better security, especially in dusty environments. If dust isnt a concern, IP48 may be adequate. Always refer to the manufacturers specifications for water protection details.Winner: Samsung Galaxy S25 PlusNirave Gondhia / Digital TrendsSamsung has kept the camera specifications of the Galaxy S25 Plus consistent with those of the Galaxy S24 Plus. However, introducing a newer, more powerful chip enhances camera performance by improving image processing speeds and overall quality. The Galaxy S25 Plus features a versatile 50MP primary camera that captures sharp, detailed photos, even in challenging lighting conditions. The 12MP ultrawide-angle sensor offers an impressive 120-degree field of view, allowing users to capture expansive landscapes or large group shots without stepping back. The 10MP telephoto camera also provides 3x optical zoom, making it easier to take clear shots of distant subjects without losing detail. The 12MP front camera is designed for high-resolution selfies and video calls, ensuring that self-portraits and virtual meetings look great. On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 cameras are decent but not exceptional, balancing performance and usability. The standout feature is the 50MP primary camera, which excels in various lighting conditions and produces vibrant images with outstanding clarity. This camera is paired with a 12MP ultrawide sensor that offers a wide 123-degree field of view, perfect for capturing expansive landscapes or group shots without fitting everyone into a tighter frame. The device features a 10MP selfie camera at the top of the inner display for selfies. This camera performs admirably, allowing users to capture flattering self-portraits with accurate skin tones and commendable detail.Overall, a newer chip and a more robust camera system make the Galaxy S25 Plus the winner.Winner: Samsung Galaxy S25 PlusNirave Gondhia / Digital TrendsThe Galaxy S25 Plus boasts a battery capacity of 4900mAh, significantly more significant than the Galaxy Z Flip 6s battery, which is 4,000mAh. This increased capacity translates to noticeably longer battery life, making it capable of lasting a full day even with heavy use, such as streaming videos, gaming, and multitasking between apps.Regarding charging capabilities, the Galaxy S25 Plus offers advanced wired charging features, including faster charging speeds of up to 45W. These allow the device to charge from 0 to 100% in under an hour, which is particularly useful for users who are always on the go and may not have time to wait for their device to charge. Both models support wireless charging, but the efficiency remains comparable. Each phone can charge up to 15W wirelessly. Additionally, both devices support reverse wireless charging, meaning you can use them to charge other compatible devices or accessories, enhancing their versatility.Overall, while the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is compact and stylish, the Galaxy S25 Plus offers a more practical battery solution for those prioritizing longevity and charging speed. Thus, it is a solid choice for power users.Winner: Samsung Galaxy S25 PlusThe Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus, and Galaxy S25 Ultra are the first Samsung devices to feature Android 15 and the companys One UI 7. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 comes with Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1, but it will support future software upgrades as they become available. Both models are promised seven years of software updates and bug fixes, ensuring that your phone will be supported for an extended period, regardless of which model you choose. One important note is that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is an older device, so those seven years started ticking down earlier. In other words, the Galaxy S25 Plus will support one more version of Android than the other model.Winner: TieNirave Gondhia / Digital TrendsYou can currently pre-order the Galaxy S25 Plus, available with 256GB or 512GB of storage and 12GB of RAM, starting at approximately $1,000.
