The studio is developing its debut title, codenamed 'Project Ethos,' which has reportedly drummed up little interest since its reveal last year.Condrey, who previously co-founded Sledgehammer Games (now one of several studios making Call of Duty games), spun up 31st Union in 2019. • UK government rebuffs pleas to prevent live-service games from being disabled
    www.gamedeveloper.com
The UK government will not extend consumer laws that could prevent live-service games from being shuttered.Players in the country have previously called on regulators to address the issue, which gained greater significance after Ubisoft's sudden takedown of The Crew in early 2024. The hope, according to the 'Stop Destroying Video Games' initiative (spun up after The Crew's shuttering), is for developers to leave online games in a playable state after ending development rather than completely shut them down. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) replied to a petition on the matter, saying it has "no plans" to amend UK law to address the phenomenon. It reiterated game sellers "must comply with existing requirements in consumer law and we will continue to monitor this issue.""We are aware of issues relating to the life-span of digital content, including video games, and we appreciate the concerns of players of some games that have been discontinued," reads the Department's statement. "However, there is no requirement in UK law for software companies to support older versions of their products. [...] There may be occasions where companies make decisions based on the high running costs of maintaining older servers for games with declining user bases."Even so, the DCMS said it will "monitor this issue and consider the relevant work of the Competition and Market Authority (CMA) on consumer rights and consumer detriment."Keep games alive, but for how long? The DCMS' refusal to extend consumer laws puts up a roadblock for those in the UK who want to ensure games stay alive longer than a few years.Game preservation takes on many forms, and developers have made efforts to keep their online games around after ending development. For some, this just means keeping the game purchasable and playable, as is the case with BioWare and Anthem. In other instances, it's providing players with a means to play those titles without an internet connection. In response to player backlash, Ubisoft is creating offline modes for The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Redfall similarly got offline modes after their respective developers ended support or closed down.Multiplayer-focused games are being delisted and retired at a faster rate than before, and not every developer can meet the demand to keep those titles alive. Even if they do, it may not be enough: players of the first Crew game filed a lawsuit against Ubisoft, alleging the studio had "duped" them. That the UK government has addressed the matter shows it's gaining traction, as does its assurance to monitor games to ensure these delistings aren't violating consumer laws.

  • Reddit tells communities threatening Elon Musk and DOGE workers to cool down
    www.theverge.com
Reddit has seen an increase in rule-breaking posts across several communities, and it has issued a temporary ban on one that featured users calling for violence against people who work for the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).That community, r/WhitePeopleTwitter, was given a 72-hour ban on Tuesday, as reported by Engadget. Screenshots shared on X show multiple examples of the threatening posts. Musk later reposted the screenshots, claiming that the users have broken the law.In a note on the subreddit, Reddit says it was banned due to a prevalence of violent content and that inciting and glorifying violence or doxing violate Reddits rules. An unnamed Reddit admin said the ban was meant to be a cooling-off period for the community.Reddit also gave a full ban to a subreddit called r/IsElonDeadYet for violating rules against posting violent content. The unnamed admin said Reddit is taking steps to ensure all communities can provide a safe environment for healthy conversation in a post on r/RedditSafety.Reddit communities are places for civil discussion and are one of the few places online where people can exchange ideas and perspectives, the Reddit admin account wrote. We want to ensure that they continue to be a place for healthy debate no matter the topic. Debate and dissent are welcome on Redditthreats and doxing are not. When Reddit identifies communities experiencing an increase in rule-violating content, the company says it will reach out to moderators, add a popup to the subreddit reminding users of Reddits rules, and issue 72-hour bans when needed.Last month, many subreddits banned posting links to Elon Musk-owned X. In that case, Reddit said communities were free to implement the rules.

  • Mobile Suit Gundam Live Action Film Now in Full Production
    www.ign.com
A live action film adaptation of the beloved anime and toy franchise Mobile Suit Gundam finally appears to have entered full production, with Bandai Namco and Legendary signing an agreement to co-finance it.While the film was announced in 2018 it's barely been heard of since, but this word from Legendary and the newly formed Bandai Namco Filmworks America indicates fans can finally start looking forward to seeing the first ever live action Gundam film on the big screen. The companies confirmed Mobile Suit Gundam, which currently lacks an official name, will be written and directed by Sweet Tooth's Kim Mickle and released in theaters globally. It will be the first live action punt for a franchise which has seen 25 anime series, 34 animated films, 27 original anime productions, and more, plus an incredibly popular toy line, that combined pull in more than $900 million a year."We plan to steadily announce details as they become finalized," Legendary and Bandai Namco said. No release windows or plot details were shared, though a teaser poster was released."Mobile Suit Gundam, which began broadcasting in 1979, established the genre of 'real robot anime' that could not be described in terms of simple good and evil, which had been the trend of robot anime up to that point, with realistic depictions of war, detailed scientific examinations, and intricately interwoven human dramas that treated robots as 'weapons' called 'mobile suits,' and caused a huge boom," they added.Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. • Xbox and Nintendo Spurred the Two Scariest Moments of Former PlayStation Exec Shuhei Yoshida's Career
    www.ign.com
Shuhei Yoshida, former president of Worldwide Studios for Sony Interactive Entertainment, has revealed that Nintendo and Xbox each orchestrated the two scariest moments of his long career at PlayStation.Yoshida told MinnMax that the release of the Xbox 360 one year before the PlayStation 3 was "very, very scary," as those who considered waiting for Sony's console would be well behind in tasting the next generation of video games. But Yoshida said "the biggest shock I had from an announcement from the competition" was when Nintendo announced that Monster Hunter 4 was going to be a 3DS exclusive. "That was the biggest shock," he said.Monster Hunter 4 launched exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013. Ultimate launched a year later.Monster Hunter was a colossal hit on the PlayStation Portable, to the point where it had two exclusive games, but Yoshida had no idea Nintendo had secured this new game for its own console. To make matters worse, it then slashed the price of the 3DS by $100, putting it well below the PlayStation Vita."After launch, both Nintendo 3DS and Vita were $250 but they dropped $100," Yoshida said. "I was like, 'Oh my god'. And [then they] announced the biggest game... The biggest game on PSP was Monster Hunter. And that game is going to come out on Nintendo 3DS exclusively. I was like, 'Oh no.' That was the biggest shock."Yoshida retired in January after more than three decades with Sony, where he became a face of the PlayStation brand and was beloved by fans worldwide. His no longer being with the company has allowed Yoshida to share some previously unheard insight such as this, however.Yoshida has also said how he'd have tried to resist Sony's embattled live service push and even given his two cents on why it won't make a remake or sequel to cult classic Bloodborne.Photo by Stuart Wilson/BAFTA/Getty Images for BAFTA.Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. • Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Just Put a Dark Twist on One of His Best Costumes
    www.denofgeek.com
Features Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Just Put a Dark Twist on One of His Best CostumesYour Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man just connected the webslinger to the Fantastic Four, but with a dark twist...By Joe George | February 5, 2025 | | Photo: Marvel Animation. This article contains spoilers for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.We all know that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. But a recent episode of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man supposes, What if he wasnt?Throughout Hitting the Big Time, the fourth episode of the Disney+ series, Peters new mentor Norman Osborn offers a few different costumes for Pete. In one, he dons a golden suit with angled silver accoutrements, adorned with a red cape. Another switches to a more fly-based look, complete with tiny flapping wings and big purple bug-eyes. Finally, he channels his inner Batman for a look so sinister that it makes a little girl cry.But the big moment comes at the end of the episode, when Norman gives Pete a costume he likes: a white get-up with dark blue highlights that is unmistakably meant to look like his Future Foundation suit from the comics. And that one has serious implications for the rest of the show. All four of the outfits that Osborn gives Peter come directly from the pages of Marvel Comics. The first three were part of the Identity Crisis storyline that ran across all four Spider-Man comics that Marvel published in 1998. The stories found Spider-Man framed for murdering a low-level criminal, and adopting four new identities to continue doing good and to investigate the crime. As the golden-hued Prodigy, the buzzing Hornet, the amazing Ricochet, and the terrifying Dusk, Peter found the real baddie and cleared Spideys name.Although Peter changed back into his familiar blue and red duds, the concepts proved immensely popular. Marvel quickly applied them to four new people, giving them unique origins to explain how they took on these identities, and then put them together in their own ongoing title, Slingers.Slingers ran for just 12 issues, but the quartet continues to show up in Marvel Comics. In fact, after the death of the second Hornet Eddie McDonough, longtime Spider-Man supporting character Hobie Brown (you may know his multiversal counterpart Spider-Punk from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) became the next Hornet, finally abandoning the criminal Prowler identity he originated. The Future Foundation costume has much larger implications, as its the suit that Spidey wore when he joined the Fantastic Four to replace his best pal the Human Torch, who died sacrificing himself to save the rest of the team. More than an acknowledgment of his entry into the team, a team Spidey had tried to join since 1963s The Amazing Spider-Man #1, the suit gave Peter technology designed just for him by Reed Richards, the smartest man in the universe. As part of the Future Foundation, Peter got to share his knowledge with the young scientists Reed had gathered for the think tank. The role gave Peter the chance to see how much younger heroes respected him, something the perpetually inferior feeling Spider-Man needed. Moreover, it placed him at the center of the Marvel Universe, acknowledging that hes the guy who inspires everyone else.In Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, its not Reed Richards who gives Peter the Future Foundation suit. Its another famous genius, Norman Osborn. The show already pulled a similar switcharoo in the premiere, which recreated Peters MCU introduction in Captain America: Civil War but put Osborn in the place of Tony Stark.Clearly, the show is setting up a terrible twist for Peter, in which Norman stabs him in the back. Putting Norman in the place of Tony Stark and now Reed Richards only makes that cut deeper, promising a stand-off between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin. We dont know when it will happen, but we do know that Spidey will have plenty of costumes to choose from.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!New episodes of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man stream each Wednesday on Disney+.
