• YouTube Bug Couldve Exposed Emails Of 2.7 Billion Users

(Photo by Beata Zawrzel/NurPhoto via Getty Images)NurPhoto via Getty ImagesFor at least four months and possibly much longer, YouTube was vulnerable to a sneaky exploit that couldve leaked the email address of any of its users all 2.7 billion of them. The attack vector, uncovered by security researchers going by the aliases Brutecat and Nathan, combined two separate design shortcomings in Google APIs in order to get to its final target: acquiring an email address. Before you panic: The researchers disclosed the security hole last September. Google has since patched it and issued a $10,000 reward to Brutecat and Nathan. But heres why the discovery is a big deal. How The YouTube Exploit WorksA leaked email might seem like a minor incursion, but chained with additional attack vectors could ultimately have larger repercussions. It also puts users anonymity at risk.At the core of the security hazard is a Google account management mechanism dubbed GaiaID a Google Accounts and ID Administration (GAIA) number linked to individual users. The GaiaID leak likely lasted for years now, at least ever since Google implemented the block feature on YouTube live chat, Brutecat tells me. Not long ago, these were even leaked from the YouTube comments API response for use with the profile card feature.MORE FOR YOUBrutecat adds its definitely possible that people scraped these GaiaIDs from comments, but questions whether they wouldve successfully linked them to email addresses. More concerningly, the researcher notes that other Google products like GPay, Play and Maps also leaked GaiaIDs.I hope Google would eventually fix this as well, Brutecat tells me, adding its possible there might be similar GaiaID-to-email attack vectors in the wild to be exploited in these products.(Google wasnt immediately available for comment, but Ive reached out and will update this piece accordingly if I hear back.)Back to the exploit. Leveraging a GaiaID to unveil an email address required another move. For that, Brutecat and Nathan used the Pixel Recorder app in order to email a potential victim. At first, the researchers noticed that sending a recording to an email would also come with a notification, which wouldve alerted a user that something malicious is taking place. But by making the recording title length 2.5 million characters long they were able to send an email without alerting a user with a notification. The security wizzes have since posted a proof-of-concept video, which you can check out below:Just How Big Is The Scale Of The YouTube Exploit?Just how big of a danger is the GaiaID exploit? Well, the issue is that Google relies on this mechanism across its suite of products. For reference, YouTube has 2.7 billion users. Maps had surpassed 10 billion installs on Android by 2021.Factoring this in, unpatched GaiaID leaks whether in YouTube or other products could put billions of users at risk. The good thing is that Google has already plugged one of these holes better hurry up and take care of the rest soon.

  • Big monitor brands are stockpiling displays as a buffer against Trump's tariffs
    www.techspot.com
The big picture: The ongoing tit-for-tat tariff battle between the US and China could lead to a five percent increase in monitor prices for American buyers. That might not seem like much, but it marks a sharp reversal from the steady price declines of recent years driven by intense competition in the display market. According to Asian supply chain sources cited by DigiTimes Asia, rising tariffs on Chinese goods imported into the US are set to drive up monitor prices. In response, major brands are stockpiling inventory in an effort to keep price hikes as low as possible. This situation stems from the Trump administration's aggressive trade policies, which triggered retaliatory tariffs from China. These tariffs have put additional pressure on monitor manufacturers, whose margins were already razor-thin. As a result, major brands like Dell, HP, and Samsung are being forced to adopt more conservative shipment targets as rising costs disrupt their pricing strategies. However, the industry giants have a contingency plan: stockpiling. DigiTimes reports that these companies are rushing to import extra inventory potentially around 2 3 million units to buffer against the expected price increases. Moreover, second-tier brands that were already struggling to compete with the pricing and logistical power of industry giants could be facing even tougher challenges ahead.Historically, these smaller players have had little negotiating leverage when securing production capacity and maintaining profit margins. Now, with supply chains disrupted by the trade war and first-tier brands aggressively stockpiling, they are likely to face even higher costs that will be much harder for them to absorb. // Related StoriesA five increase may be the best-case scenario at this point. When the tariffs were first announced, the Consumer Technology Association warned that a worst-case escalation could send prices skyrocketing by 60-100 percent for some product categories. Fortunately, we haven't reached that level yet. However, experts caution that tariffs will lead to price hikes across the board. GPU costs have already been affected, and some manufacturers, such as ASRock, are even considering shifting production from China to Taiwan. Meanwhile, TSMC is reportedly planning to raise the prices of its most advanced semiconductor wafers by up to 15 percent this year.

Rumor mill: Nvidia hasn't been more specific about the RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti cards' launch dates beyond them arriving sometime in February. While the Ti version is still on track to land in the next few weeks, the vanilla card has reportedly been delayed until early March, and for several possible reasons. The claim comes from prolific leaker MEGAsizeGPU, who writes that the RTX 5070 "will be delayed. Instead of February, it will be on the shelf in early March."Leakers' claims should always be taken with a grain of salt, but there are plenty of reasons to believe this one. Firstly, the RTX 5070 Ti review and launch embargoes are set for February 19 and 20, respectively. But Nvidia has released no embargo details for the RTX 5070.The other issue is the supply nightmare that has been plaguing the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 launch. The cards were sold out everywhere on launch day, with most retailers allocated units in low double-digit or even single-digit figures, leading to many labeling it a paper launch. If Nvidia does delay the RTX 5070 until March, one would hope the company will be able to build up more stock to supply to retailers. // Related StoriesThere's also AMD to consider. Team Red has confirmed that the mainstream RX 9070 series will also launch in early March. While Nvidia may be hoping to steal headlines from AMD by releasing the RTX 5070 around the same time as the RDNA 4 cards, there's always the slight chance it could adjust the pricing of the Blackwell GPU based on what AMD does, thereby making it more competitive. It was recently reported that AMD may price its RDNA 4 cards to undercut Nvidia's mid-range equivalents $599 MSRP for the RX 9070 XT, $150 less than the $749 RTX 5070 Ti, while the RX 9070 will likely be cheaper than the $549 RTX 5070.Nvidia has already announced the price of the RTX 5070, so a sudden change seems unlikely. However, the company did "unlaunch" the $899 RTX 4080 12GB in October 2022, later relaunching it as the RTX 4070 Ti, which was $100 cheaper. In other AMD news, the company is rumored to be developing a 32GB version of the upcoming RX 9070 XT, though it is designed with AI applications in mind.

be safe Common factors link rise in pedestrian deathsfixing them will be tough A new AAA study finds common factors in the rise of fatal pedestrian crashes. Jonathan M. Gitlin Feb 12, 2025 11:06 am | 6 Credit: Getty Images Credit: Getty Images Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreAmerican roads have grown deadlier for everyone, but the toll on pedestrians has been disproportionate. From a record low in 2009, the number of pedestrians being killed by vehicles rose 83 percent by 2022 to the highest it's been in 40 years. During that time, overall traffic deaths increased by just 25 percent. Now, a new study from AAA has identified a number of common factors that can explain why so many more pedestrians have died.Firstly, no, it's not because there are more SUVs on the road, although these larger and taller vehicles are more likely to kill or seriously injure a pedestrian in a crash. And no, it's not because everyone has a smartphone, although using one while driving is a good way to increase your chances of hitting someone or something. These and some other factors (increased amount of driving, more alcohol consumption) have each played a small role, but even together, they don't explain the magnitude of the trend. For a while, researchers started seeing that the increased pedestrian death toll was almost entirely happening after dark and on urban arterial roadsthis has continued to be true through 2022, the AAA report says.Together with the Collaborative Sciences Centre for Road Safety, AAA conducted a trio of case studies looking at road safety data from Albuquerque, New Mexico; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Memphis, Tennessee, to drill down into the phenomenon. And common factors did emerge. Pedestrian crashes on arterial roads during darkness were far more likely to be fatal and were more common in older neighborhoods, more socially deprived neighborhoods, neighborhoods with more multifamily housing, and neighborhoods with more "arts/entertainment/food/accommodations" workers. As with so many of the US's ills, this problem is one that disproportionately affects the less affluent. The design of the roads plays a large role, particularly in the way that cars are prioritized over more vulnerable road users. A lack of sidewalks and crossings on multilane roads that have retail locations (gas stations, fast food restaurants) immediately puts a pedestrian at a disadvantage. Add to that a pedestrian or driver who's a little tipsy (and maybe distracted by their phone), and the trouble begins.Unfortunately, AAA's study also points out how difficult it will be to fix some of the contributors to this problem. In many places, the built environment needs to be changed, but it's expensive, and American society is just too accepting of traffic deaths to demand it happen. There are clashes between local and state governmentsthe latter often owns the arterial roads where these deaths are happening, leaving the cities powerless to take action themselves. And even before the change at the top of the federal government, there was still insufficient funding for pedestrian safety and too much prioritization of vehicle traffic. It's very difficult to imagine positive change occurring there during the next few years."Reducing the spike in pedestrian deaths requires data-driven investments where they matter most," said Jake Nelson, AAA's director of traffic safety advocacy. "If safety is truly a top priority for decision-makers, we should expect greater investments in historically underinvested communities where a disproportionate number of pedestrians are hit and killed."Jonathan M. Red Rover Curiosity spies stunning clouds at twilight on Mars The noctilucent clouds only appear in some locations on Mars, near the equator. Eric Berger Feb 12, 2025 9:54 am | 20 Since 2012, NASA's Curiosity rover has been studying Mars. Credit: NASA Since 2012, NASA's Curiosity rover has been studying Mars. Credit: NASA Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreIn the mid- and upper-latitudes on Earth, during the early evening hours, thin and wispy clouds can sometimes be observed in the upper atmosphere. These clouds have an ethereal feel and consist of ice crystals in very high clouds at the edge of space, typically about 75 to 85 km above the surface. The clouds are still in sunlight while the ground is darkening after the Sun sets. Meteorologists call these noctilucent clouds, which essentially translates to "night-shining" clouds. There is no reason why these clouds could not also exist on Mars, which has a thin atmosphere. And about two decades ago, the European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter observed noctilucent clouds on Mars and went on to make a systematic study.Among the many tasks NASA's Curiosity rover does on the surface of Mars since landing in 2012 is occasionally looking up. A couple of weeks ago, the rover's Mastcam instrument captured a truly stunning view of noctilucent clouds in the skies above. The clouds are mostly white, but there is an intriguing tinge of red as well in the time-lapse below, which consists of 16 minutes of observations. It turns out that Curiosity has been observing these clouds for a couple of years, and now scientists can predict their formation enough to time observations just right. Hence this gorgeous view."Ill always remember the first time I saw those iridescent clouds and was sure at first it was some color artifact," said Mark Lemmon, an atmospheric scientist with the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado. "Now its become so predictable that we can plan our shots in advance; the clouds show up at exactly the same time of year."Notably, although Curiosity has observed these clouds in Gale Crater, just south of the Martian equator, other NASA rovers on Mars have generally not seen them. Lemmon and some other scientists believe gravity waves may be sufficiently cooling the atmosphere to allow carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to condense enough for thin clouds to form. This is one of the many scientific mysteries that Curiosity will continue to investigate.Eric BergerSenior Space EditorEric BergerSenior Space Editor Eric Berger is the senior space editor at Ars Technica, covering everything from astronomy to private space to NASA policy, and author of two books: Liftoff, about the rise of SpaceX; and Reentry, on the development of the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon. • Harnessing cloud and AI to power a sustainable future
    www.technologyreview.com
Organizations working toward ambitious sustainability targets are finding an ally in emerging technologies. In agriculture, for instance, AI can use satellite imagery and real-time weather data to optimize irrigationand reduce water usage. In urban areas, cloud-enabled AI can power intelligent traffic systems, rerouting vehicles to cut commute times and emissions. At an industrial level, advanced algorithms can predict equipment failures days or even weeks in advance. But AI needs a robust foundation to deliver on its lofty promisesand cloud computing provides that bedrock. As AI and cloud continue to converge and mature, organizations are discovering new ways to be more environmentally conscious while driving operational efficiencies. DOWNLOAD THE REPORT Data from a poll conducted by MIT Technology Review Insights in 2024 suggests growing momentum for this dynamic duo: 38% of executives polled say that cloud and AI are key components of their companys sustainability initiatives, and another 35% say the combination is making a meaningful contribution to sustainability goals (see Figure 1). This enthusiasm isnt just theoretical, either. Consider that 45% of respondents identified energy consumption optimization as their most relevant use case for AI and cloud in sustainability initiatives. And organizations are backing these priorities withinvestmentmore than 50% of companies represented in the poll plan to increase their spending on cloud and AI-focused sustainability initiatives by 25% or more over the next two years. • It's official: Egg prices are at new all-time highs after the biggest spike in 10 years
    www.businessinsider.com
Americans haven't seen this big of a monthly increase in egg prices in 10 years. The 15.2% jump brings egg prices to a record high in January.Gas and housing were two other pain points in January's 3% year-over-year increase in inflation. The last time egg prices spiked this much in one month, Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar's "Bad Blood" dominated the airwaves.Egg prices rose 15.2% between December and January, the biggest month-over-month increase since June 2015. A dozen Grade A large eggs hit an all-time high average price of $4.95.Egg prices contributed to overall inflation rising to 3% year over year in January and were a major driver of a jump in grocery prices. Eggs weren't the only category showing price spikes rising housing costs, for example, were responsible for almost a third of total inflation last month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said, and gas and energy prices crept up as well.Still, a worsening bird flu crisis continues to hit shoppers in the egg aisle."The H5N1 bird flu sweeping through the U.S. agriculture industry is forcing farmers to cull infected birds and sending egg prices soaring, a big supply-side shock to food prices," Bill Adams, chief economist for Comerica Bank, said in a statement. To avoid egg hoarding, some grocery stores are cracking down on how many can be purchased at once. A Trader Joe's spokesperson recently told Business Insider that customers can buy one carton per customer per day."We hope these limits will help to ensure that as many of our customers who need eggs are able to purchase them when they visit Trader Joe's," the spokesperson said.Restaurants are also struggling with high prices. CNN reported that Waffle House added a temporary surcharge for egg orders."The continuing egg shortage caused by HPAI (bird flu) has caused a dramatic increase in egg prices," Waffle House said. "Customers and restaurants are being forced to make difficult decisions."Fresh, whole milk and white bread are also expensive compared to before the pandemic. The average price of coffee remains higher than just a few years ago, too.Mark Hamrick, Bankrate's senior economic analyst, said in a statement to BI that coffee and eggs are outliers that "can aggravate many consumers who sometimes mistakenly see the anecdotal cases of inflation as an indication of general inflation." He added that's not always true."There are specific reasons why eggs and coffee have been moving up on their own, issues that are not easily resolved," Hamrick said.
