Architecture publications come and go, but lately it seems more of the latter. The phenomenon is particularly true in Los Angeles, where titles like L.A. Architect and the L.A. Forums newsletter ceased (and, before that, Architecture/West folded in the 1960s and Archetype in the 80s). More recently, critics like Christopher Hawthorne and Carolina A. Miranda departed The Los Angeles Times.AN even gave the West Coast a go with its regional print edition, an effort that began in February 2007 (with Sam Lubell at the helm as California Editor) and ceased in 2016.So it was a pleasant surprise to receive Of the Moment (OTM), a new effort instigated by Thom Mayne, edited by Dora Epstein Jones and Frances Anderton, and supported by the A&D Museum. The publication is a folded newsprint item printed in black ink with a trim size of roughly 10.5 inches by 16.5 inches. It is mostly useful, content-rich interviews that lean academic with a host of architects, educators, and students chiming in. In between, individual projects are presented in write-ups with supporting photos, renderings, drawings, and diagrams. There are excursions to Santa Barbara (Robin Donaldsons impressive Hill House) and Argentina (a home designed by Florencia Pita and Hernn Diaz Alonso). And across the top, a Greek chorusBarbara Bestor, Greg Lynn, and Joe Dayoffers running commentary. The issue was a real labor of love for the city of L.A. and its current architecture scene, Epstein Jones shared via email.Despite its useful record of local concerns, OTM lands as indulgent, as Mayne instigated it out of spite. Last year, the New York Review of Architecture (NYRA) decamped to Los Angeles for its inaugural issue of the Los Angeles Review of Architecture (LARA), guest-edited by AN contributor Mimi Zeiger. (Samuel Medina, ANs prior executive editor, edits the RAs.) Mayne and his wife, Blythe Alison-Mayne, financially supported the effort, and NYRAs publisher, Nicolas Kemper, stayed with them when in town to launch LARA. But upon thumbing through its green-tinted pages (which were nearly matched by OTMs dimensions), Mayne found that his enthusiasm had dimmed. LARA missed the point, he said on a recent phone call. It was kind of snarky, and, frankly, I dont think they understood L.A. Perhaps he was personally offended: In the issue, Zeiger, a longtime Angeleno, pans his M3 as a relentless, I-Ching of disciplinary thought thats generally unreadable. For Mayne, the point of OTM is dialogue, not single voicesand certainly not the whiny takes of downer naysayers: Architecture doesnt need critics right now. Its hard enough. And hes not above a clap back: OTM ends with Maynes tribute to Antoine Predock, who is shown flipping off the camera. (Sources say Mayne wanted to put this photo on the cover to send a message to the haters but later changed his tune.) Mayne also came to the rescue of his friend Eric Owen Mosss (W)rapper building, which was savaged by critics, including Ryan Scavnicky writing for AN and Oliver Wainwright in The Guardian. In a country that loves freedom, why pan a building that so proudly embodies the ideal? That aint right. On the phone, Mayne widened his complaint: The U.S. is a very difficult place to practice architecture. Its just not interested in the culture of architecture. And if you look at especially experimental work, theres just about nothing coming out of this country right now. Its totally amazing. [Its] the richest country in the world, and if you talk to anybody thats interested in innovation, all the work will be in China and the Middle East. Mayne would know: Morphosis, the office he founded, works around the world. It contributed to The Line at NEOM, though it reportedly stepped away last summer after the project was scaled back and news emerged about the high number of worker deaths across the Saudi Vision 2030 initiative. Mayne rightly said American culture is obsessed with private space. When it comes to civic grandeur, forget it. Its hard to get money to build a reasonable public building today. These days, he believes, the press [moi?!] is interested in being negative instead of supporting architects. A thin skin does one no favors: If architects cant tolerate the jabs of those who encourage practitioners to do better, how are they going to survive in the mean wider world of culture?OTM debuted back in September at an event at the A&D Museum with regular tickets priced at $200. Since then, there has been some feedback. Hawthorne, in a short note in the latest issue of NYRA, summed up OTM as intermittently enlightening if rambling conversations among talented L.A. architects before lamenting Maynes demolition of Ray Bradburys home to build his own compound. Mark Lamster, Alexandra Lange, and Miranda, in their year-end fake awards roundup, gave it the X-Acto of Doom Award, because pesky critics have a habit of getting in the way. Are L.A. architects allergic to criticism? Julie Eizenberg told Kemper that architects do not come to L.A. to be part of a villagethey want to do their own thing. LARA, in Kempers view, demonstrated that the metropolis might be ready to have a proper town square, a bastion of reported and critical pieces written by working writers deeply in tune to the city. He continued, I think [Maynes] work building up architecture institutions, most notably SCI-Arc, demonstrates that he really understands that building the town square benefits all architects, even if he may not agree with everything that is said in it.Whats next for OTM? Mayne said he is looking for someone else to steer the ship. Meanwhile Epstein Jones, who teaches at The University of Texas at Austin after a stint at Texas Tech, wants to take OTM on the roadChicago? Detroit? Miami?provided theres financial support.Mayne, who instigates from his Culver City venue called the Stray Dog Caf, comes across as a swaggering outsider despite his starchitect status. OTM collects valuable discourse but even though it was organized by a Pritzker Prize winner, the effort scans as an amateur publication, like an inky 1990s alt-weekly. Maybe in addition to paying writers it should invest in a proper graphic designer? If OTM can squeak out another screenshot of the L.A. zeitgeist, it will face competition: NYRA has fundraised $20,000 to support its next issue of LARA, due out later this year. Kemper shared, I hope OTM publishes a second issue, too, and look forward to reading it. Same. A version of this story appeared in the January/February 2025 print issue ofThe Architects Newspaper.

  • Elkus Manfredi envisions Palm Beach campus for Vanderbilt University
    www.archpaper.com
Dubbed a billionaires playground and Wall Street South Palm Beach, Florida, may not be the first location to come to mind when considering where to locate a college campus. The South Florida locale has long been a warm-weather haven for famed residents, including Serena Williams, President Donald Trump, and Sylvester Stallone, and has recently become a hub for development, as banks and tech companies open offices there. Vanderbilt University has been understandably eying the region to expand its educational footprint and this week the Tennessee-based school shared renderings from Elkus Manfredi Architects that envision what a campus in Palm Beach could look like. Vanderbilt has indicated it plans to open a campus to house graduate-level business programs and facilities to study data and computer science and AI in Florida. In October, the university reached a deal with Palm Beach County Commission that provided five acres of county-owned land, on top of two already approved, city-owned acres, for the campus site. Vanderbilt said it is looking to open a campus in South Florida, to complement the regions booming financial and tech sectors.Native plantings are planned for the campus to create a sense of place while also harkening to the Nashville campus. (Elkus Manfredi Architects)John Boyd Jr., of The Boyd Company, a site-selection firm, told the Nashville Post in an interview about the project: A VU campus will help to open the floodgates for new scholarships, gifts to the school and other fundraising activities. He added, Palm Beach is home to some 60 billionaires, and nearly a quarter of Vanderbilt students come from families in the top 1 percent of earners. That makes Vanderbilt one of the wealthiest schools in the nation. Vanderbilt and Palm Beach are a perfect fit.The connection to place and outdoors takes root inside as well. (Elkus Manfredi Architects)Not unlike Vanderbilts main campus in Nashville, the Palm Beach outpost will be tree-filled, with a strong connection to the outdoors. David Manfredi, CEO and founding principal of Elkus Manfredi Architects, described the project as a living laboratory of South Florida landscape. Plantings native to the region will form an arboretum of sorts, similar to the historic one on Vanderbilts main campus, where over 6,000 trees and shrubs are planted. The arboretummirroring the arboretum on our Nashville campussymbolizes our commitment to operate as One Vanderbilt, and our never-ending collective effort to dare to grow, Vanderbilt Chancellor Daniel Diermeier added.A campus in Palm Beach locates students in an area with financial- and tech-sector growth. (Elkus Manfredi Architects)Native species envisioned for the Palm Beach campus include slash pines, Cherokee Beans, and, of course, sabal palms. Sea grape, gumbo limbo, and buttonbush will also grant a sense of place that is rooted in Florida identity. Other plans for Vanderbilts Palm Beach campus include the new Executive Education & Lifelong Learning Building, envisioned with a mass timber structure. Facilities across the campus are depicted in renderings with rooftop photovoltaic panels. Given the citys proximity to water, coastal resiliency is also top of mind for the design of the campus, which will comply with floodplain regulations and take into account stormwater mitigation. In addition to classrooms, space for entrepreneurial work and innovation could also take hold.A classroom equipped for distance learning. (Elkus Manfredi Architects)Vanderbilts Board of Trust has set a fundraising goal of $300 million to realize the Palm Beach campus, estimated to cost a total of $520 million. The university also plans to expand its educational offerings to New York City. This past fall it leased a historic campus in Chelsea, owned by The General Theological Seminary.

  • Tech security 101: How to spot a hidden tracker on your car
    www.foxnews.com
close Trump says DeepSeek AI is a wake-up call for US tech industry Fox News correspondent Christina Coleman reports on the impact of DeepSeek AI on U.S. tech stocks and reactions to the innovation on Fox News @ Night. The latest stats say 80% of stalking victims are tracked using tech. One of the most popular ways to do it? GPS trackers, like an AirTag. Theyre small enough to slip into a bag, pocket or your car undetected."Kim, this doesnt impact me." I wish that was true. Maybe you have an ex or friend who wont buzz off, or maybe you met a stranger at a bar or store who was acting creepy. Youre at risk. Did you drive across the U.S. border? Yep, crooks are targeting tourists, too.Win an iPhone 16 Pro with Apple Intelligence ($999 value). No purchase necessary.Enter to win now!The good news is your phone can alert you when an unknown tracker is with you. If all else fails, good old-fashioned sleuthing works, too. Ill show you how.THE BIGGEST WI-FI MISTAKE YOU DIDNT KNOW YOU WERE MAKINGThe clock is tickingAn AirTag starts beeping only after 24 hours away from its owner. That gives the stalker plenty of time to reach you, especially if theyre local. If a carjacker tags your ride, they could learn your routine and follow you home before you even know whats going on.The rumor mill says Apples AirTags 2, coming later this year, will have antistalking tech. With the most current AirTags, tech-savvy stalkers can rip out the built-in speaker so you wont get alert, but the new ones should make it harder. For now, you need to do everything you can to stay safe. Apple AirTags, don't come with antistalking tech quite yet. Other GPS trackers come with similar issues. Read more to see what you can do to protect yourself. (Melina Mara/The Washington Post via Getty Images)RELATED: AirTags arent just for creeps.I always toss one in my luggage. On your iPhone, make sure a few settings are enabled:Open Settings> Privacy & Security > Location Services. From there, toggle on Location Services and Find My iPhone. Then, head to System Services and turn on Significant Locations.Next, go to Settings > Bluetooth and toggle on Bluetooth.Go to Settings > Notifications > Tracking Notifications and toggle on Allow Notifications. Now, open your Find My app and tap Items at the bottom of the screen. Tap on Identify Found Item.On Android, the process is similar as long as your phone is running Android 6.0 or newer. If its not, you really need a new phone!Open Settings > Location and toggle on Use location, Wi-Fi scanning or Bluetooth scanning.Turn on Bluetooth by going to Settings > Bluetooth and toggling on Bluetooth. To make sure alerts are enabled, go to Settings > Safety & Emergency > Find Unknown Tracker Alerts. Toggle on Allow Alerts. The alerts arent foolproofIts not just ripping out the speakers. Older tracking devices might not set off an alert, and savvy creeps can reconfigure new trackers to follow you undetected for months. Bad actors can easily use GPS trackers against you. Here's how to check for these unwanted devices' presence in your car and get rid of any you find. (iStock)Thats why its important to check your car now and then, even if you dont hear that telltale beep. First, grab a flashlight and a mirror.Start outside your car. Check spots where the tracker could be magnetically attached, like the wheel wells; grill; underside; bumpers; around the exhaust pipe, roof or hood; and the engine and battery terminals.Inside your car, check the seat crevices and pockets, dashboard, steering wheel, glove compartment, and trunk. Look under the spare tire and dashboard on the drivers side, too, inside the onboard diagnostics port.If you dont find anything but still feel uneasy, try a bug detector. This well-rated option ($37) works for cars, homes, bags or whatever.Small hidden cameras are popular with creeps now, too.Heres my guide on spotting cameras in a rental, dressing room, private space at the gym or anywhere else you expect privacy.IM A TECH EXPERT: 10 AI PROMPTS YOULL USE ALL THE TIMEI found a tracker. What now?Dont smash it or disable it. You want to give the police all the info they need to catch whoever planted it.First, hold your iPhone or NFC device to the white side of the AirTag. Tap that notification that pops up to see info about its owner. Jot down the serial number and phone number so you can share them with the cops. Resist the temptation to destroy unwanted trackers if you find them police need them to get valuable information on your stalker. (James D. Morgan/Getty Images)Now, make an aluminum foil envelope. Wrap the tracker inside, making sure there are no gaps or holes. This will block any signals, so the person who installed it will just think its out of range. Take the foil-wrapped tracker to a police station. Theyll know how to pin down who put it there. Are you being stalked or just paranoid? • Data Reveals Identity-Based Attacks Now Dominate Cybercrime
    www.forbes.com
Cyberattacks no longer rely on malwarethey thrive on stolen identities. As adversaries move faster ... [+] than ever, organizations must rethink security before it's too late.gettyCyberattacks are evolving, and the latest data suggests they are moving away from malware-based methods toward identity exploitation. According to the CrowdStrike 2024 Global Threat Report, three out of every four attacks now rely on valid credentials rather than malicious software. This shift is being driven by an evolving cybercrime economy, where stolen identities are as valuable asif not more thanexploitable vulnerabilities. A growing underground market for credentials, combined with the rise of automated phishing and AI-driven deception, is making traditional security models increasingly obsolete. You may have really locked down environments for untrusted external threats, but as soon as you look like a legitimate user, youve got the keys to the kingdom, said Elia Zaitsev, CTO at CrowdStrike, when I spoke with him about the insights from the report. This shift underscores a major challenge for companies: If an attacker doesnt need malware or an exploit to break in, how do you stop them?Adversaries Are Moving Faster Than DefendersAnother troubling finding in the CrowdStrike report is just how quickly attackers can escalate once inside a network. The fastest recorded eCrime breakout timethe time it takes an attacker to move laterally after gaining initial accesswas just 2 minutes and 7 seconds.Traditional security approaches, which rely on detecting malware or waiting for security analysts to manually investigate alerts, are struggling to keep pace. In an identity-driven attack, there are no malicious payloads to scan forjust an adversary masquerading as an authorized user.MORE FOR YOUThis shift has fueled a rise in living-off-the-land techniques, where attackers use built-in system tools to evade detection. Instead of deploying custom malware, they use legitimate credentials and remote monitoring tools to blend into normal network traffic. The Rise of Cross-Domain AttacksA significant challenge highlighted in the 2024 Global Threat Report is that identity attacks are no longer confined to a single environment. Attackers are now leveraging valid credentials to move laterally across on-prem, cloud, and SaaS environments, making them much harder to detect.I also spoke with Jim Guinn, a cybersecurity leader with EY. He described this tactic as part of a growing trend. You have to get in, and you have to be able to laterally move throughout the network, which means you have some level of access. And access requires identity. He added that nation-state actors are particularly focused on pre-positioning themselves within networks, gaining access months or even years before launching an attack. For organizations that still treat endpoint security, cloud security, and identity protection as separate disciplines, this poses a major problem. Attackers are increasingly pivoting between these environments to shake off detection and maintain persistent access. The moment that man created AI, he also created a way for bad actors to use AI against you, Guinn noted. They're creating a quicker way to get to a set of targets that cybercriminals can use, and they're creating code bases and ways to manipulate users' credentials faster than the human can think about it.How Companies Are Adapting to Identity-Driven ThreatsAs identity-based attacks outpace traditional security models, organizations are being forced to rethink their cybersecurity strategies. One of the most critical shifts is the move toward continuous identity verification. Traditionally, authentication has been treated as a one-time eventusers log in once and are then trusted indefinitely. But with attackers now impersonating legitimate users, more companies are adopting real-time behavioral monitoring to detect anomalies.Another major change is the adoption of just-in-time privileges. Instead of giving employees permanent administrative access, organizations are limiting high-risk permissions to the exact moment theyre neededthen revoking them immediately afterward. We're bringing all that to bear, Zaitsev explained. We are taking that cross-domain, multi-domain visibility approach, unifying it all, and then, of course, also focusing heavily on continuous detection, prevention and response.Guinn shared a revealing anecdote from a company that emphasizes the importance of strong identity controls. One of their senior executives said, I think the only reason we havent really had breachlike a significant breachis because we have multi-factor authentication for our user credentials. The Future of Cybersecurity Is Identity-CentricIf the CrowdStrike 2024 Global Threat Report makes one thing clear, its that identitynot malwareis now the primary battlefield in cybersecurity.Attackers no longer need custom exploits or backdoors when they can simply buy access credentials online, phish an employee, or trick an AI-driven authentication system.Put bluntly, the stakes are clear: Without accesswhich requires a users identitythreat actors cant really do a whole lot. Identity is the epicenter of an effective cybersecurity strategy. As security teams work to adapt to this new reality, one thing is certain: If organizations continue treating identity security as an afterthought, they risk being left defenseless against attackers who no longer need to break inbecause they already have the keys.

  • Apple Reveals Apple TV App For Android, Available Now
    www.forbes.com
The Apple TV app is coming to Android phones and tablets, right now. Apple has just announced the Android app, and it went live in the Google Play Store at 12 p.m. Pacific, Wednesday, Feb. 12. It means Android users can access Apple TV+ content through phones and tablets, in an app optimized for every screen.Apple TV app for AndroidAppleTrue, there was already a web app, but it lacked the capability to download content to watch later, which this app has.And its designed to look good on the screen, whether youre watching on a tablet or even a fold or flip Android phone. The hardware requirement is that the device should be running Android 10 or later.Once youve downloaded the app, it looks strikingly similar to the Apple TV+ app for iPhone, on a Google Pixel phone, for instance. The tabs across the base of the display are the same, with one exception: theres no Store app.For now, the focus of the app is the content in Apple TV+, including the Major League Soccer Season Pass.Theres plenty of content to choose from, including series like the hypnotic Severance and the brilliant Slow Horses, plus movies like Wolfs, On the Rocks, Killers of the Flower Moon and CODA. Plus, of course, Ted Lasso.MORE FOR YOUAt the moment, you cant cast the content from the Android app to your TV, for instance, though this is a feature that will be added. And you can download shows or movies to watch later on your phone or tablet. In the app is a Continue Watching rail. If you have other gadgets such as an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV box, or one of the many TVs with the Apple TV app, you can stop watching on your Android phone and where youve got to will be shared with all your other devices so you can pick up from the same place there.Apple TV+ costs $9.99 a month (8.99 a month in the U.K.) and if youre not already a subscriber, theres a free seven-day trial. Which is just enough to get you hooked on some of the shows so you sign up properly.

  • Earth's inner core has shifted shape over two decades, scientists discover
    www.techspot.com
Planetary Potato: Earth has a complex internal structure consisting of a solid iron-nickel core at the center and a liquid outer core. The interaction between these two elements can significantly impact the planet's solid, outer crust, and unusual events have been occurring within it for years. Earth's inner core has changed shape over the past 20 years. A team of scientists studied the core's behavior to understand why its rotation slowed down relative to Earth's in 2010, and discovered new evidence of the mysterious, shapeshifting nature of the planet's center.Earth's core is thought to be a solid sphere spinning independently from the liquid outer core and the rest of the planet. This rotation generates the magnetic field that protects Earth from solar winds and harmful solar radiation, acting as a shield for life on the crust. Without this spinning core, we wouldn't be here today. The researchers analyzed a series of seismic waves produced by 121 repeating earthquakes recorded in the same region of North America, between 1991 and 2023. Earthquake shockwaves are essentially the only way we can study what's happening deep beneath the planet's surface, as no one has yet been able to dig 4,000 miles to directly probe the hellish conditions of the core.By studying the repeated earthquakes, Professor John Vidale and his colleagues confirmed that the core actually slowed down around 2010. They also made a second, serendipitous discovery: Earth's core was changing shape in different locations. This phenomenon occurred at the boundary between the inner core and the liquid outer core, where the solid core approaches its melting point. The material flowing between the inner and outer cores could disrupt Earth's gravity field, causing the apparent deformation of the solid core. Hrvoje Tkalcic, a professor from the Australian National University, noted that this is an intriguing concept deserving further research in the future. // Related StoriesUnderstanding what is happening in our planet's hidden, chaotic interior will undoubtedly affect the future of our world in unknown and unpredictable ways. When Earth's core eventually stops, its magnetic field will cease to exist, and life will likely go extinct. While this apocalyptic event could happen billions of years from now, Earth will likely be consumed by our Sun's supernova before that occurs.
